Transfer window effects; Celtic and Rangers breach five and four month records

On Thursday morning I suggested that transfer window activity had tilted the balance of power towards Celtic. We unquestionably strengthened while Rangers, who lead the league by four points, sold their Player of the Year candidate, and placed their top scorer in the football equivalent of purgatory, awaiting the intercession of a higher power to move him on to the next place.

A few days later, Celtic scored five goals for the first time since 15 September and Rangers failed to score against domestic opposition for the first time since 6 October, almost four months ago.

Was anyone surprised? Anyone?

Well done to Peter Lawwell and Gordon Strachan, but a special thank you to Sir David Murray and Walter Smith; the min-break in Italy, timed to avoid the last minute transfer window stresses, must have been especially satisfying.

    Paul67,

did I read earlier that not only is Bobo Balde coming back to Celtic, he is coming back to 'play'.

    Care to expand on that?

A result like that has been coming for a while Paul. I think the vast majority of us knew that.

However, I'll gladly accept 1 - 0 wins every game as long as the next 5 - 1 win is against them.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot !

Two players who would have won the game for Rangers yesterday-

Cousin and Hutton-whose replacement-Whittaker was injured, leaving them without a recognised right back.
    A very poor side.

I am happy with the addition of Hinkle to our defense. Caddis played well although, we didn't have many opportunities to judge him on his defensive qualities.

I look forward to having Bobo back in the defense. However, I read today in the BBC match report of his countries 5-0 thumping to Ivory Coast that he is injured.

I wonder what the extent of his injury is and how long it will place him on the sidelines.

In the Record this morning the compared reports for Celtic and Rangers ties overwhelmingly favoured Celtic's performance by a country mile. But just check the aggregate player's ratings for those who started their matches respectively. Unbelievable! plus Barry got his usual 8!

Each time I've watched them they always seem to start very brightly but can run out of ideas if things don't go their way early on. They're then relying on luck to pull them through. I do believe that theirs may have run out and that the backlog of matches is more likely to tell on them than us. If the Cousin deal does go through I think they'll be very sorry.

In terms of his footballing ability, I am not a great fan of Gary Caldwell, however I'd be surprised if Balde came in at his expence, due to Strachans admiration for the Centre half come right back.

I wonder if Paul's information on this is mainly based on the impending Champions League games agianst Barca where Hinkel is not available.

Would we expect to see Balde partnering McManus and Caldwell moved to right back in those games?

I know Bobo Balde isn’t everybody’s favourite, but he does seem to have stuck at it and behaved professionally, from his stand point at least.

If it comes to be, I’m glad. We need a bit of presence, intimidation and grunt to balance the team and redress any physical deficiencies that may be exploited by some rather less skilfully gifted teams. Scot Brown looks to be a marked man just now, just like Paul Lambert was.

I just don’t want Celtic to be found lacking in any department in the run in to our three in a row.

I would be wary of handing in my team sheet in any game prior to the authorities naming the officials. Even then, my fingers would be crossed in the event of injuries - right up to kick of; not injuries to our players, but of the nominated officials as they prance down the tunnel. I wouldn’t want one of them splitting a finger nail and a substitute ref, in the last year of employment, making a sneaky cameo in a six pointer.

    'Celebrate' multi-faith education
    Alex Salmond
Mr Salmond said faith-based schools should be celebrated
First Minister Alex Salmond has said that hostile attitudes towards Catholic schools in Scotland need to change.

He argued that the contribution made by faith-based schools to the education system should be celebrated.

Mr Salmond made the comments as he delivered the Cardinal Winning lecture at Glasgow University, during Catholic Education Week.

The first minister recognised the work of Cardinal Keith O' Brien to promote the work of the Catholic Church.

Mr Salmond said: "Scotland's diversity is a source of strength, not weakness.

"For too long the attitude of some has been, at best, grudging acceptance of Catholic education and, at worst, outright hostility."

All faith-based schools, said the first minister, played a significant role in helping to shape, inspire and strengthen the ability of young people to learn.

He went on: "Education has been the mission of Scotland's Catholic Church. And education is the foundation on which the Scottish Government is building a better, more successful and more just society in Scotland.

"The way to solidarity is not to diminish the role of faith but to promote regard, respect and understanding of all faiths in Scotland. Nowhere matters more as a place to promote this thinking that Scotland's schools."

Let´s face it, the transfer market is much more transparent than it used to be and teams have to respect the rules. Deadlines are now regularising what used to be a free for all. There are work permits, players´ agents involved in deals, Fifa rules, Uefa rules and SFA rules. If previous to all this tightening of financial transactions you have gone over the edge of the limit of the law, you may well be unprepared when everything has to be squeaky clean. Rangers did well out of the Hutton sale but botched the Cousin deal. They will have promised Cousin a move to the EPL, when enticing him to play for a few months in Glasgow. They may have said we will put you in the shop window and this will make the move easier. Fulham have contracted Litmannen so it is not a sure deal yet. Cousin will indeed be in purgatory as Rangers will have promised Darcheville a run in the team, and Boyd is also part of their plan B.

Not that that makes them any less formidable opponents. Barry and co are a sneaky lot, see recent hand ball, and we will have to be on our toes at all times. Scott McDonald said after the recent Falkirk game that he didn´t mind winning ugly. That is good, because you can be sure that Rangers will make it as ugly as they can when we , finally, get to face them.

Interesting situation we now have at right back. I believe Mark Wilson is back training but I don't know where Doumbe is in terms of fitness. So it's conceivable that we'll soon have 4 good right-backs vying for our so called problem position. As it stands if they were all fit I believe Caddis has done enough to be 2nd choice. He looks a real player not unlike, er, Hutton. I would expect Wilson to be moved on in the summer although, of course, I could be very wrong.

Anyway, that's my thinking. Long time listener, first time caller so to speak...

I think it’s worth stating if Celtic had behaved as Rangers did this transfer window not only would the press be creating a club crisis out of it, but this blog would be in open rebellion.

I might be the only person to state I’m happy to see Hutton leave for 8million, or any price for that matter. Because the price is fairly immaterial, I believe Murray has no intention of re-investing it anyway and whether you like it or not Hutton is a quality player who has the potential to improve even further. It’s quite common for young full backs to learn their attacking skills early, and grow into their defensive skills. If young Caddis follows this mould we’ll have few complaints. They’ve lost their best player, and a player who knew how to use, I’ll be charitable here, the shortcomings of Scottish referees to their fullest.

The Cousin situation is simply laughable, and the longer it hangs on a FIFA decision the better.

I've said before I take my young kids to the matches and I'm confused about whether it's acceptable for them to sing the first couple of lines, the others with the sweary words are not allowed. My wife goes mad when they sing it around the house as she doesn't want them to know words like Huns and Orange and so on but they know the words from going to the game.

I really don't know about the Holy Goalie song. Do any others on here with kids have a problem with them and the song? Is my wife right to try and get them to never sing it?

Any news from the SFA as yet?

There are 6 Rangers players in the Burley get-together this week: McGregor, Alexander, Weir, Ferguson, McCulloch and Boyd.

Hibs don't have any players in the full squad, but there is also an under 21 tournament starting this week. According to the SFA web site the suqad is due to fly out to Portugal today. McCann, Stevenson, Campbell and Fletcher of Hibs are all in the squad, as is Naismith of Rangers.

So clearly to reschedule the replay for this week would be putting club over country. I wonder what the two new national managers would think of this?

I also believe that the police were instrumental in moving replays to the second midweek after the original game. Has their view been sought?

And I though that cup matches take precedence over league matches. So could the SFA not decide to use 27/2 for the replay forcing the postponement of the league games scheduled for Rangers and Hibs that night? The replay would then be played before the scheduled quarter final ties.

See the trouble you get into when you postpone matches in November for no good reason!

Sons of Erin, Re; the Hutton Fee:

I’m glad too, to see the back of him. He wore Rangers on his sleeve.

By no stretch of the imagination do I know how the transfer fee, amount payable, is actually structured. I’m just glad he’s gone. Good player or not, the day was going to come when he could’ve done young Aiden some serious damage.

Whatever sum of money, Allan Hutton’s transfer was to Spurs, in real pound notes; (in your pocket tangible beer vouchers) it is unlikely that Spurs paid the full amount in a one off, up front, lump sum?

Could it have been spread over a given period with qualifications???

I know Spurs are an affluent and well run club, with wily businessmen on their board, (it is a massive, and probably only boast, by their supporters at the moment) so I’d be surprised if the total sum payable was an immediate, in total, transaction.

Now the mint wouldn’t be so stupid as to be borrowing against IOU’s would he?

I could be wrong but I think a big factor on Saturday was players going forward with options ahead.

How often this season have McGeady and Brown looked up to see no one on the move.

Some of the counter attacking play was great.

I see the old media still giving Donati pelters. He gives the ball away more than most, as often he is looking for a pass that will make a difference.
He would really benefit from playing a midfield diamond as I think he can see a pass.

Seeing Caddis play so well was good and bad. The bad being why didn't we try him before?

Afternoon all,It's Been Good reading a lot of the Headlines since the game on saturday... Cameo..Sublime..Exquisite..flambouyant..Deft...Faboulous...

The one thing it wasn't was 'Ground Hog Day'...
Good to see everybody back refreshed and Hungry... A CL performance if ever i have seen one... And Three Strikers Score...when did that last happen?
One thing that took me was the Age of the team that Started/Finished...the game..
Would be interesting to hear from the stat men...How young?...
But such a young team bodes well for the months ahead... And a lot of promise of things to come... After Three In A Row...

The Future Is Bright... If The Future Is As Bright As Georgiuos Boooots...

When Arsen Gooner was Trawling Europe for the new Thierrey Henri...GHorgi BHoy was one of his targets at the same time as Emmanuel Adebuyour... E.A. won that contest as a raw talent...And they 'press' laughed at his 7M price tag...

would be interesting to find out how young our current squad is to ...previous...squad/teams

So thats where you have gone? If you can survive 2 nights a week in the 4 floors then Cape Town will be a dawdle.

At least in Africa you don't have to watch out for Bears.Saw you with a couple once in the Bali Bar?

Take care wee man. Watch out for the spears and I don't mean Britney or Graham. Sometimes they leave them in funny places.

Someone posted earlier that Caddis might be in for a chance playing Barca if he keeps playing well.

WGS should keep playing him now as he is the only Right Back that is healthy and eligible to play against Barca. So he might as well get in as many 1st team games in as he can before we play Barca on the 20th February as Hinkel cannot play in the Champions League.

It is good the SFA insisted that there should be no replay this Wednesday. It would be sweet though if a few of the huns got injured while meeting up with the Scotland team, imagine the outcry, the howling would be non-stop.

Did Balde play last night for Guinea?

Wee question which has puzzled me for years:

If a player takes part in a minor qualifying round for a EUFA competition (say July) - he remains cup tied for that tournament through 2 transfer windows, even though the team he played for and the team they played against could well be oot!

    They remain 'Cup Tied'

Yet a player can play against his old mates in the league the following week (should fixtures dictate) - how come you can't be 'League Tied'?

Jinky who is getting old and puzzled.

Cna you recommend a decent pub to watch Celtic games now Frazers has apparently stopped?
A group of us are going over in April or May and not sure where to see games on Polesat or Setanta, cheers.

    RoyBaine,

Nah, I'm off work today. I'm not civil enought to be a servant..!

Frazers is still showing all the games, on the 1st floor, courtesy of Polsat. Every game live every week. They stopped showing games for a few weeks until the furore over the "riots" on O'Connell St after the Love Ulster parade died down.

Any bands playing play on the 2nd floor and it's ticket only / pay at the door. No more impromptu CD playing or guitar strumming I'm afraid.

    Jinky Red Star,

it gets more complicated! If a player plays in a country that is non-aligned (eg Russia) then he could play through 3 transfer windows...

So the Myth of Bobo being our best Defender can live on. Mineshafters will be happy about that, they can use that to attack WGS when Bobo comes back and does not replace GC in the starting line-up.

I hadn't thought about that, you would need to be v careful before signing a player from one such country.

I think I know the rationale behind the 'cup tied' idea but not clear why it applies if your team is out and threfore can'y play your new team. Makes the league situation even more weird.

    Any sporting lawyers out there?

    Hail hail

    RoyBaine,

The craic is still pretty decent in Frazers. It does cater for all supporters now. In one corner you'll have Italians watching Italian games, in the other is an English game on Al Jazeera or something like that, in another corner is a Dutch game. Just before Christmas, 7 different tellies were showing 7 different games. Celtic always get the big screen though...

    Afternoon all,
Before i get down to football (although after last nights post should it be soccer?)
I would just like to echo the sentiments and pass my condolences to our two friends who have suffered great losses recently.
My cousin recently passed away at 23 in a freak accident just 3 weeks before the birth of his baby boy that was difficult to take I can only imagine what you are going through.
My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
Saturday is the first time in months that I have walked out a match with a smile on my face and not thinking “thank F88k that’s over”
I thought we were excellent from start to finish young caddis was terrific and donati looked for the first time since early September like a player who could really make an impact.
I have to reserve special praise for two players Gary Caldwell in particular and to a lesser extent Jan Venegoor of Hessilink (for the tube who called him vinegar get a grip and have some respect). These two players were terrific.
Im not sure if this is a general opinion or just one that is confined to moaners in 108 where is sit but these two take an incredible amount of personal abuse and for them to keep on going out there knowing that they are out of position and not 100% fit respectively. knowing full well the amount of abuse that is coming their way shows IMHO a massive set of Cohonas and a great attitude, I hope now back in the correct position and 100% fit these two players can stick 2 great big long fingers up at those people who no matter what they do will always have a go! And show what real class acts they are.

Terrific article on E-Tims by Che Timvara. A must read.

He tips the cap to Paul67, which is what you want to see between Celtic sites.

Anyway, amongst other things, he suggests that Cousin has actually been sold to Fulhardy. Cash paid, just waiting for those silly people at FIFA to do the right thing.

The purpose being,I assume, to show the money in the accounts at the end of the month.

What happens if FIFA don't play ball. Does Mintless return the money and they play Cousin, or does Mohammed hold on to the cash and they keep a player, who they would be afraid to play, because of a risk of injury. The player than leaves in the summer.

A case of Buy now-Play later?

I watched the Hutt's debut on Satirday. He didn't do much, except for two fliers after being tackled. The ref told him to get off his a... and get on with the game.

Like Ferguson before him, he was sold as a book balancing deal and like Baz, will be back home in a couple of years.
