2006 fixture precedent for SPL, Part III; this time it’s not personal

The FA Premier League had four full league programmes in the week between Monday 26 December 2005 and Monday 2 January 2006.

The experience was not fatal. On 3 January 2006, the sun rose in the east and set in the west; Chelsea played games on all four dates and went on to win the league.

Rangers could be allowed nine days, Saturday to the following Sunday to play four games; extending the league to help their players prepare for the rigours of competition would be preposterous; it would be akin to administering THG by committee.

    Hail Hail

Good Dat to all the Happy Clappers, Mineshafters, Towel Throwers, Capitalist Bankers, Lurid Lawyers, Too Serious Socialists, Maniac Middle-Class Cliquers, Jaikey Journalists and Lurkers. I think that should about cover everybody, apologies for leaving any group out.

Yesterday was a Good Friday, lets hope it is a Better Saturday with the Hibees doing us a favour. Here is a rumour that will surely make a Better Saturday for the Mineshafters, Towel Throwers and probably the Capitalist Bankers amongst us.

"Wolfsburg are preparing a bid for Celtic midfielder Massimo Donati.
The Bundesliga club hope to convince Celtic to cash in on the Italian with a £2.5 million offer."

I can hear all the foremention group rushing to the keyboard to type 'Snap it up' Wolfsburg use to have my all-time favourite manager that was suited to the club that employed them - Wolfgang Wolf Manager of Wolfsburg. there is a pack of wolves in that title. I was so hoping that when he got the sack ( was it a woodsman that gave him the chop?) that the Wanderers of Dudley would hire him, who knows it might still happen as Big Mick has not enthralled a lot of Wolves supporters that I know and his Jaiket is hanging on a shoogly peg.

Speaking of managers, I heard an interesting fact this morning and maybe those posters that keep recommending Cloughie's autobiography can confirm this. That the first season that Brian Clough took over Derby as manager he won his first game then did not win another game for three months, the second season he only won 4 league games and after that as they say the rest is history. The reason I am relating this is that situation could not of happened today, after 10 games he would have been out the door, one of the greatest managers in history would not have the time to develop if he was around today. Likewise with players, some need time to develop into class players e.g. Skoosh & Sno.

Finally an anorak type of question for Paul67. It's a bit of a sad statto question about CQN, part of my role at work is to look at trends, highlight hotspots, monitoring auditing etc. likewise I do the same for my research into my dissertation. I have notice a sudden increase of posters of the 'Long-time Lurker first-time posting' variety this week which is great the more views on the CQN the better, and it does rubbish the claim that the CQN is a clique as why would anyone post for the first time if they thought they would be ignore by the clique. I am just curious if you ever looked at the trend for first-time posters, are there more say at the end of the season? after a famous victory? after a devasting loss?in this case is it fans venting their frustration or something more sinister as huns in disguise winding people up. It would make an interesting social study (Saddo I know, I should get out more)to look at when people post, it would make a nice graph. On a bored Saturday when Celtic are not playing my mind wanders a bit.

jbj - dont get me wrong. I am not saying anyone that voices disspleasure at the team are not real celtic supporters. On the contrary. These people are the ones that are so passionate and so hurt that they cant keep thier feelings locked up. I am one of them.

But folk that booo our own players when they are sent to warm up? DISGRACE!! Thelot of em. And if that is what a true celtic supporter is then i dont want to be one.

Debates are often long and heated exchanges in my house when the bhoys all get together. It is truelly astonishing how many different games people see when they watch the exact same match.

that is what debate is all about.

    BUT

In the past, even though there were arguements, and displeasure at the way the team were playing, and team selection.... WE ALL PULLED IN THE SAME DIRECTION.

Celtic was a fortress of noise, a place that players feared to come to. The name alone was intimidating.

Jackie Mac summed it up the other night BEFORE the game. "We (the sheep) intend to go there and frustrate the celtic team. If we get to half time at nil nil and the home fans booo them off the park, then we have been doing our job". The oposition used to fear us, they used to akgnowledge us as a 12th man, now they see us as THEIR back up in the fight against our own team.

    THERIN LIES THE PROBLEM.

Barcabhoy, it sure is. Soundings have already been taken.

Narrowbhoat, thanks. My guess is that the SPL will extend if they think they can get away with it. The issue has not hit public consciousness yet, so opinions have not hardened yet.

The person to ask about first time posters on Celtic Quick News is Curly, he has all the data. There is a ton of social research material on this site.

You will not be surprised that a poor result (drawing 2-2 at home to Dundee United last season) brings more traffic that a victory over Rangers that season.

You should still see a yellow banded message after posting a comment, if you don’t, something is not working right. Again.

SkySportsNews claim that Hartley is back from an illness which he's been suffering from lately so I suspect we'll see him in the midfield against Gretna.

I'm pretty sure Balde is still injured though, I had a look at some pictures of them training and Balde is not around (although not all players were shown) and neither was he involved with the reserves against Rangers.

I don't think there are any other injury concerns though at least other than the ones we know about.

Any info on referees for today at Ibrox, tomorrow and next Sunday? I assume it's a given that Clark and Dougall will get two of the three remaining Rangers matches at the expense of two of the grade 1 (ie properly qualified) officials.

At what point exactly have Rangers run out of free midweeks? By my reckoning there's potential for up to three more European games and one Scottish Cup replay.

i suspect you are right about paul hartley, and if fit will start at almondvale.

i reckon i'm a minority on here and don't see what hartley brings to the celtic side, apart from being
reduced to a 'tidier upper' contribution.

he has made it into the side this year but is a pale shadow of the peak he had at hearts. i believe he is
part and parcel of why we've struggled this year and that's why we've had different combinations of failure in midfield.

strachan recently prefers donat,i who is much more likely abeit infrequently to create a goal than paul hartley.

so on that logic - hartley will start since even WGS doesn't know what to try next

I'm not sure that Gordon prefers Donati at the moment not after his performance against Barcalona. Hartley played the next match and did well but missed out the next two through illness and Sno has played ahead of Donati on two occasions. Donati played midweek but unlike some others I thought he did quite well, I felt people criticized him because of the result rather than the performance. I'm sure if we put a few of our chances away the midfield would have recieved some credit for dominating the game. Whether he has done enough to keep Hartley out the team though I'm not sure, the midfield is a bit more disciplined with him in there. I might be tempted to keep Donati in there though.

we need a lennon and we don't have anything that comes close. i don't mean the neil lennon that left us, more the neil lennon we signed. you and i and the cqn'ers could write a book about the midfiled this year and probably have.

then we could write two books about the srtikers and three about the back four.

anyways i don't disagree with what you say but reckon sno should be given a longer run and would
play him even along with another holding player at snake mountain.

I would not read too much in to there being more people on when we lose than when we win.
It could be that when we win people are perhaps too busy celebrating whereas when we lose it makes a lot more sense to come on here and vent your frustrations rather than be outside !
    Just a thought !

afternoon all, have to say i fancy at least a couple of dropped points today by them! also would like to say that whatever the descision on extending the season (as wrong as it would be) we still have winning it in our own hands. My view on the defence as i see a lot of people looking for bobo coming in for gc, i would not put bobo in because, as big and imposing as he is, he has not played many games this season and it would be like giving the card happy MIB an early xmas present, i would go with dropping mick and putting in O'Dea.
As for the rest of the team,hg,hink and wilson, robson and zico, aiden and donati, the two scotts out for gretna as there a booking away from a ban,so sam and jan up front with hutch on the bench for an extended run-out.

  • At 22/03/08 13:19, Blogger Sean said…

I quite like Sno as well but I'm not confident of relying on an inexperienced 20 year old for the run in. I also think that despite his origins as a defender I think he does his better work as an attacking midfielder rather than a defensive minded one. We certainly a new Lambert or Lennon and we don't have one at the club right now but Hartley is probably the closest we have to that type of player.

  • At 22/03/08 13:20, Blogger Gordon_J said…

Good to see the precedents Paul. I think we need to get as much information into the public domain as possible as a campaign will begin in the press pretty soon for an extension. The groundwork is being set, with various mentions so far.

In the Herald today Sir Walter (surely it's only a matter of time?) said of an extension "That would be down to the league," added Smith. "But if I am saying that this is the first time I can remember a fixture situation like this happening, then it is a new thing for the league as well."

So no precedents. In other words there would be nothing wrong with extending now.

But it is only an issue if they get through against Sporting. If not, there are enough midweeks to play all of their games, even if they do manage an upset win at Firhill.

If they do reach the semi of the UEFA, then they have one more game to play than available midweeks. That would give the league 2 options:

    1. They play 2 midweek games one week, ie Sat, Mon, Thu, Sun.

    2. They move the final league matches from the Sunday to the following Wednesday. That means they can catch up on what should be the final day and then we both play our final matches at the same time in midweek.

Option 2 is clearly to the detriment of us and our fans and I'm sure we would oppose it.

Celtic's Australian striker Scott McDonald revealed the logistical difficulties he will endure during his journey to the Far East as he hopes to keep alive his dream of appearing in the World Cup in South Africa.

The Australian international will fly out after the weekend's Scottish Premier League clash with Gretna to join his team-mates for a group qualifier against China in Kunming on March 26.

In addition to two long flights, the 24-year-old will have to prepare for a game at altitude before he returns to play against Rangers at Ibrox in a crucial SPL game three days later.

He said: "These are the sacrifices you have to make for your country."

"It's important for me because it's a chance to play in the World Cup. To turn my back on that would be pretty stupid."

"The gaffer has fully backed us as well. He's been great with everyone, he always wants his players to play for their country."

"We're playing somewhere near Tibet but I don't know too much about where I'm going."

"The game's being played above sea level to give the Chinese every chance of beating us."

"With the time difference the kick-off will be Wednesday morning here."

Despite the difficulties, McDonald is confident he will be in peak condition to face Rangers.

"Australia have physios and doctors in a set-up which is second to none," he said.

"We have doctors travelling with us on planes making sure we're sleeping at the right times, even giving us asthma pumps because we're playing above sea level."

"I had a lung test before I went away the last time."

"They said for me to cope in these conditions I'd have to take one of the asthma pumps."

"They'll be making sure we're well looked after and we come back in good condition because the last thing they want is clubs complaining about it and not letting us go the next time."

"I'll be back in Glasgow on Thursday."

"Last time I came back from Australia having played on the Wednesday we played Aberdeen on the Sunday and we won 5-1 and I scored a double."

"So it's okay as long as you look after yourself."

Taken from... theworldgame.com.au if anyone wants to keep up with SMcD Travel/form ect...

I see lots of people having wee digs at my clique comment. YES IT WAS|ME!!!

If you look at my post (sorry don't know how to link) you will see that this was a suggestion on how to improve the site, not an aggresive attack.

I merely suggested that the nature of this site has changed from an open forum to a more friends orientated thing. Maybe discouraging new users to post or visit the site.

Comments such as Martin42 and WG actually support my theory as it seems I am being ridiculed for my suggestion, which only serves to alienate me further.

The appeal of the site for me is reading as broad a view as possible from a big range of Celtic fans. It helps me weigh up my own opinions.

As far as I am concerned, if a team wants to play on all 4 fronts then they should equip their squad accordingly.

If the fixture congestion is too much then they could do what Bolton done and deliberately get eliminated from 1 tournament to focus on another.

With regards to Skippy playing tomorrow I wouldn't risk him as silverfox78 says he's only a booking away from a ban & we need him for ibrox, as for the other scott I wouldn't care if he was dropped or suspended as his only contribution to the team recently has been picking up bookings & I would rather see Robson & Hartley line up at ibrox.

I agree with you view that the appeal of the site is to have a broad range of views, don't worry about the wee digs as long as they are not malicious, I find that is one of the most appealing traits of this blog. I find that I more willing to listen to posters views if it is done with a touch of humour. Some posters are take themselves too serious and feel that they have too defend to the wall their stance or this blog.

I try to have a wee dig at everyone and hope it is taking in jest and that they know there is no malicious intent intended. So far nobody has taken offence except one poster who I wont name as he is a sensitive wee soul living in Las Vegas exploiting the disavantage while trying to come up with nonsesical posts that only a few can understand, as I said I wont name him.

Keep posting your views Jamie and don't be put off. As for cliques, I have not met any CQN posters for a drink yet but I have never felt excluded from any conservations on-line, I am sometimes ignored but that is usually about the poor contributions of my post on a particular subject.

    We need a Lennon!!

You can see with your mouth that we need a leader on the park, someone to drive the team on, someone to force the team to go that extra mile and someone to spit and snarl their way through a game when it is required.
While many things have been said about Neil Lennon if any of our current midfield had even half of his spirit I think we would be much better for it.
The only player we have that shows any of these qualities is the Holy Goalie. We have been blessed in the past with having natural leaders and fighters running through our team, its now time for a few players to stand up and be counted.

    johnnyquest,

We've only played Motherwell once this season. 3-0 at home so one home game (5/4) and two trips to the mudheap to come.

Falkirk at Hearts this afternoon, a big game in the race for 6th. A Falkirk win would suit us better.

Hibs n Falkirk, nice little double?

I dont get your point re goals at the lane, the total you quoted includes goals scored at the lane by both Spurs and the away team and then you quote the amount of goals we have scored.
Am I really stupid or is there a secret meaning to your point that I am not seeing.

    Just for you:

That loathesome mob, by far the second best team in North London, two words that dare not speak their name, so despicable they signed Mutton, cheated, dived and scowled their way to scraping past a heroic Portsmouth side (who held tissues to their noses such was the stench emanating from the bile) 2-0 with the second being the 101st goal at their centuries-old, Dickensian rat-infested midden this season. Not to compare like with like, we've witnessed 57.

I think the Hun will probably win more comfortably today than most of us think. If pushed I would go for 2-0.

They will realize what a massive game it is and it will be their collective spirit which will pull them through. They now have a taste for winning - and it petrifies me to think of them still in another THREE comps. I also think they will have too much for us next week and that six points with a game in hand - it will all be over.

Get under the covers for the summer and pray they get knocked out of Europe pronto.

One of their great heroes is Laurie Cunningham, played for Manure, Marseille and Real Madrid and was killed in a car-crash. In a less-than fitting tribute, the O's named their pie-stall after him.
