Celtic enhance never-say-die reputation

This draw at Pittodrie was celebrated as much as a win. A great Scottish Cup tie looked to be heading Aberdeen’s way until injury time when every Celtic player, including goalkeeper Artur Boruc, flooded forward for a Shunsuke Nakamura set piece.

The free kick itself came to nothing, but Paul Hartley knocked a loose ball back to Massimo Donati, who picked out Giorgios Samaras on the right side of the Aberdeen box.

Samaras took a touch before sliding a pass between goalkeeper and defence which Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink allowed to pass in front of him before knocking past the inspired Derek Souter in the Aberdeen goal.

Souter had seen the ball come back of his posts three times and made several fine saves and with Aberdeen twice coming close to extending their lead in the final minutes of the game, their boss Jimmy Calderwood, must have thought his team were heading for a semi final against Queen of the South.

Just as they did at Inverness this time last season, Celtic fought until the end and were rewarded for their never-say-die attitude.

I am never keen on replays, but this result, an away game coming on the back of an away Champions League match, will do wonders for team moral.

I think the players would agree with you, Paul. They were celebrating at the end as if they had won the Cup. They are obviously giving their all. They WANT it. Great to see.

Oh, I feel that that pass from Donati at the death went a long way to making up for his mistake which led to their goal and his poor performance in the Nou Camp. The Double is still on.

All through Celtic's history going back over more than a century we have a trait of scoring at the death, when a game is in the balance.
This is not luck but part of our DNA.

    Paul67,

Yes that is a fact. The former Hertz eh? and Bristol City frontman often arrived at my mate's house over the back fence wearing the Orcs' favourite replica top. It was interesting to watch a celtic v Huns kickabout taking place nextdoor.
When the y9oun master Miller was doing well at Hertz eh? I mentioned that I thought he'd do a job for us but apparently his allegiance to the dark side would have prevented this. I understand that there was a dalliance with Edmiston Drive but the offer from Bristol was MUCH more attractive.

Apologies if anyone has posted on this already. I was on a Hibs website to try to find out the score - still don't know but I know Hibs are out. They were saying that Novo almost halved a Hibs player in two and that Wattie tried to head butt Pataleinen (?) and was sent to the stand as a result. Can anyone confirm the thuggish behaviour of the Rankers manager?

Gordon Strachan is a lucky manager. Boruc has kept Celtic in the cup. Big Jan was poor. He won very few headers and failed to link the play. I cannot comprehend how he is the No. 1 pick.

I am not a fan of Sno, but he was the best man in the team. I could not believe he was taken off and replaced by Donati, who was crap again despite his role in the equaliser. Hartley was quietly effective. Naka and Aiden disappointed.

The defence was crying out for Bobo. Caldwell and McManus lack authority. Hinkel seems to be improving with each performance and Naylor was not missed.

I always try to be positive but I cannot see this Celtic team delivering 3 in a row.

Let's not forget that he is only 20 years old. We were not incisive enough up front. I think Gordon made the right substitution with Samaras for Skippy who was making little impact. Samaras looks like a good player. He showed his cool head with the pass to Big Jan for the equaliser. Others would have tried to grab the glory.

I can't help feeling we're going to get the double. Altough the Fod got a result today, they are feeling the pressure. We've been under must-win situations for quite a while now, and know how to cope under these circumstances a lot better, hence our last minute goal.
Our team is still not settled partly 'cause we've options, but I think we're getting into our stride, and will beat the Huns when we face them. Mon the Hoops.

    Hi lads,

Was just wondering if you'd like to sponsor a fellow Tim (i.e. me) and my 2 other team mates who are going on a banger rally from Calais to Casablanca starting 3rd April.

We're raising money for Cancer Research, we'll be driving 2500 miles (hopefully), actually double that as we'll be coming all the way back to Stirling as well, and the only stipulation is that it has to be done in a car worth no more than £100. So it's a bituva challenge!

We've already had an article about us on the BBC website - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/7274871.stm. And we have a website - www.craggyislanders.com which gives more details about the event, our team and how to sponsor us. You can even have a logo put on the car.

We've already had donations from my own supporters club - the Roy Milne CSC club in Alloa, as well as the Kerrydale Street Celtic forum. Any donations would be very much appreciated.

    Hail hail!

    Colin

Nacho Novo was sent off for a high 2 footed challenge. Mixu Paatelinen was furious and ran out of the dug-out to get the ned sent off. (which the ref was going to do). W Smith was furious with Mixu’s intentions, and flew at him. There was a tete a tete until W Smith was booked was sent away. He then went back to confront Mixu again before being escorted away. I think.

I didn’t hear him being criticized by his actions. Interesting to hear what the Duffer makes of it. :-)

Is it all starting to go bear shaped eh pear shaped for Dignity FC? Are they starting to feel the pressure? Are injuries and suspension starting to bite? Remember our situation at the turn of the year? How will they cope with the plethora of away games that they will have to face in a few weeks time? It's one thing winning when you play game after game at Ipox and Celtic have been playing two more away games all season. Let's see what happens when the tables are turned.

Back to us. Someone said we lack leadership on the park. I wholeheartedly agree. I always thought that Hartley led Hearts but he doesn't seem to lead us. Neither does McManus. We need someone to step up to the plate just like Neil Lennon did. Someone who is in the opposition's face and bosses our own players. I don't think that person is currently at Celtic Park but we need to find him. Does anyone have any ideas. I had high hopes that Liam Miller would have been such a player but what a disappointment he turned out to be.

I think we should go back for Petrov. England isn't turning out what he hoped it would be for him. I felt we made a mistake in not making him Captain and building the team around him.29 March is fast approaching and no sign of Bobo Balde back in the team. Can anyone tell me if he is still injured? If not, I'll repeat the appeal to Gordon that I made about 6 weeks before we played TFOD at Ipox earlier in the season - put him back in the team now. I predicted then that Cousin would bully us and he did. He may miss the game but Darcheville could play and we need Bobo to deal with him too.

    Does anyone agree?

I bet if you had been watching the videos with Bobo himself you would have told him you wanted him in the team :-)

I have my own reservations about Bobo but like many I feel he is still the best defender at Celtic Park. Cousin might have done what he did to McManus at Ipox but he wouldn't have come back on to the Park and Tried to do the same to Bobo as he did to O'Dea after Super(Fat) Swally shared a wee laugh with him and gave him the thumbs up. Bobo would have destroyed him.

    Boruc
    Hinkel McManus Balde Naylor
    Hartley Brown Sno Robson

SadiesBhoy- yes I think the pressure is beginning to tell down Ibrox way.

Regarding leadership , I think this is where Scott Brown needs to step in, rather than go squaring up to anyone within shouting distance he ahould be channeling his agression to getting the most out of his colleagues, Mick and Artur should be doing likewise, Artur of course should not be picking fights with Mick/Naylor etc, but use positive aggression.

PH has always appeared starstruck since he came to CP, what happened to the snarling player he was at Hearts (remember him booting Ross Wallace up the **** at the New Year game). I somehow don't see him doing this now.

Petrov, like Maloney- a busted flush, we should move on. Bobo- imposing and would not discount using him if the need arose.

Thank you Jan for saving me from the birthday from Hell!

I didn't see all of the game seeing only the last 20 mins and the first 20, and from what I hear then I missed our best periods of the match. If you hit the post 4 times in a match you also think we must have played not too badly.

The periods I saw we were all over the place. I was raging with Donati as his first contribution was to give the ball away in the centre of midfield which then they scored from the move. He redeemed himself at the goal though as he kept a cool head to pass to Samaras, who had taken up a very clever position. The traditional Scottish way would be to get right in the middle but the big man did well to stay wide.

On Samaras, he realy must start on Wednesday night. His movement and pace offer us something the other two don't. I thought we looked better when he was on today.

Their goal was a poor one to lose. big Mick takes longer to turn than the Titanic and teams know this. Caldwell should have covered earlier imo but we know where we are at the back. We are poor and we need major surgery this summer. Hinkel for me had his best game since he joined from what I saw.

The only downside is another £60-70 pounds from the bananas family fund, but I would have paid 10 times that for the chance in the 89th minute!

    Phew!

I wanted Petrov to be made captain before he left. I wouldn't mind him being brought back (and Maloney too, for that matter). MacManus should never have been made captain, in my opinion. I don't think he can motivate others. (I also have serious reservations about his pLAce in the team.)

Bobo should be brought back for the next match against EU's team, which means that he should get some match practice pronto. Can't, however, see it, although I do think we will be bullied again.

I would go with TTT's team. I think we would win too.

Sadiesbhoy & Goldstar :- I can't comment on events at todays game as I wasn't at it but I disagree with you that we are somehow starting to feel the pressure or that it's going pear shaped. We are in the final of the league cup, through to the next round in the Scottish cup, in with a good chance of progressing in the UEFA cup, four points clear at the top of the league and on a 20 game unbeaten run. I'd say if anything the pressure is on Celtic at the moment.

Scott Brown? Hmmm...do you remember the guy who scored at CP for Hibs last season and stood facing our fans with hands on hips. Total attitude, gallus as we would have said in the past.
    Whatever happened to him?

The armband should never have gone to Mick. He got the captaincy of our club far too easily and too early, but he's got it and we need to live with it for now. JH captained Hertz and Barry Robson captained Utd and ICT(?), so we should have enough leaders out there on the park when we play at Mordor.
Problem is, we don't have anyone currently as good as our fellow season ticket holder, Finbar Ferguson!

    Reeled you in Edward!

You might be in all of those positions at the moment but you didn't make last 16 of the Big One and you have enjoyed all sorts of fixtures advantages over us throughout the season. I still feel the advantage will switch to us in the run in. Our own recent domestic unbeaten record is quite impressive too. Didn't Barca turn your team over too?

    Edward,

Make no mistake- there is pressure on us, one slip in the league (like today's scoreline) and we face a tough struggle, however, the touchline antics at Ibrox today (which, I also have not seen) suggest to me the pressure is mounting down your way.... Cousin, Novo, Darchville all suspended/injured, a few hefty knocks were taken by BF on Thursday- if you lose him, well?

Time will tell but if it is 2003 in reverse then I will empathise how you will feel in May (though I will stop short at sympathy) :-)

TTTT- yes, I remember that, we need this type of gallusness from Brown (and Hartley if he still has it).

    5-1 to Mogga's team now.

Sadiesbhoy :- And I took it hook line and sinker :-)

You are correct in that we didn't reach the last 16 in the C.L but hopefully further progresion in the UEFA will make up for that. You are also correct that Barca beat us as well which is why I never mentioned them :-)
Celtic are on a pretty decent run at the moment and getting the points when they matter, there are three games between us to come. Despite all this though I still reckon the pressure is more on your own team. Part of this may be due to relative expectations at the start of the season where we were recovering from two very poor league seasons but it's still there.

I think you are right mate, the pressure is all on Celtic. One slip and we are in big trouble but I have been very impressed with our ability to keep winning under this pressure. For Rangers to be on a run like they have and for us to be still on their coat-tails must be a worry.

In 1986 I'm sure I read that Hearts went 31 games unbeaten in all competitions, only to lose their last 2 games that season. I don't need to say who ended up celebrating at the end of that year. Another interesting point on the similarities of that season and this one is that not many of the Hearts team that year had experienced winning a league, just as only 3 of the entire Rangers squad that I can think of have experienced winning the top league in Scotland (Charlie Adam won the Div 1 with St Mirren).

Before Rangers next kick a ball in the SPL we could well be 5 points clear, albeit you would have 3 games in hand. It will be interesting to see how Rangers can cope with that, particularly as the game v Hibs will likely be a tasty one after todays events.

I have to admit that my Dr. Evil laughs at the plight of the Teddy Bears at the start of the season have been reduced to a teeter - I have been impressed by what the cardigan has achieved and at some of the signings he has made - Cuellar and Cousin have done very well for him.

However, we are now at the business end of the season and it cannot be dismissed Wattie is bummed up by the Scottish media to be a guy who has seen it all before, a guy who is in control. He wasn't today. I've been watching football for a long time, I've seen Celtic win Leagues that we should have lost and lost leagues that we should have won. Walter lost it big time today - the pressure is beginning to tell.

It's all right being in front when the race is being run but it's totally different from when you see the finishing tape approaching and the doubts - and fatigue (injuries, suspensions, lack of experience) start to take effect.

Goldstar10 :- Out of the problems you mention the one that worries me in Barry Ferguson getting injured, right now he is carrying the team and even on his off days his constant running and harrying helps.
Porridge&Bannannas :- It could well come down to bottle, I agree we don't have many who have been in this position before however this could be matched as Celtic don't have many who have been in a tight title race before. It could well come down to bottle ratrher than any skill or ability, in that case I wouldn't like to call between them.

Novo was only "over-excited" according to his manager. That's all right then.

If Martin Taylor us being banned for 3 matches, Novo should get at least 5. Wonder if Sepp Blatter will get involved?

BTW, only 33,000 attendance at Ibrox today.

Our old pals Villarreal do what we couldn't and score in the Nou Camp, M arcos Senna from a penalty on 35 minutes. It's 0-1.

I'm not sure what a penalty is but am thinking of looking it up on Wikipedia later.

    pfayr,

With reference to Eoghan Harris and the Sunday Independent, let's just say there's a lot of 'previous'. The paper itself is a celebrity- worshipping rag which advocates rejoining the commonwealth and generally acting as the lickspittle to the british empire, or what remains of it. (just think of Gerry Mc Nee writing about politics and you'll see where i'm coming from. The paper itself has published a number of bitter anti-Celtic articles, one of which provoked a written response from Peter Lawwell himself, if I remember correctly.

Why oh Why , after all this time, do we not have a natural left back to compete with Lee Naylor for the fullback position?

We are exposed in the air at the back.Bobo should be playing.

Finally we rely on JVOH to pick up his man at set pieces and he consistantly loses either his man or the flight of the ball.

    Get it sorted.

We are supping at the last chance saloon.
We deserved to win today ,but we are very fortunate to still be in the cup.

Overall Celtic were deserving of the draw today, but during the last 15 minutes Aberdeen looked the more likely winners. We were only 30 seconds away from a possible Rangers treble.

Even the manager’s strongest supporters must be becoming increasingly frustrated with his team selections. It would be awful to lose the league through one man’s conceit.

What was the logic in subbing your best player when the game is still there to be won………and replacing him with Donati?

Ulster-Celt hit the nail on the head, he's a west-brit. It's an unfortunate flip-side of economic prosperity that some among us think it's a measure of sophistication. It's almost as embarrassing as the level of support for the overhyped EPL.

A frustrating match to watch today. We played reasonably well and created enough chances to have won at a canter. However a combination of bad luck and poor finishing (Naka) kept them in it.

I really think we have a midfield problem. Sno did well today, but it seems to me that the manager has no real faith in any of his central midfielders. It appears he does not know what his best pairing is, which is worrying considering the number of must-win games coming up.

Echoing earlier posters, I'd also give Samaras a start. Skippy looks tired, he could do with a rest.

Re: The Golden Cardingan... I do hope this is a sign that the pressure is beginning to tell on them. I also await the press condemnation of his antics...

didn't think we played that bad today, how many times can the woodwork save the opposition?

remember the last game up there Aberdeen had a few chances before we took control; aiden had an off day (he is allowed) but overall we could have won the game easily and we showed great spirit in going all the way to the end....

    Panda Hands,

I think in some ways it's just 'Lazy Journalism', albeit on a much less cynical scale than in Scotland. The Irish media, even the likes of Tom Humphries, have not moved on from the "ooh-ahh" days. As Scottish football isn't really covered in Ireland, the stereotype is unfortunately set to prevail.
On a cheerier note, can I expect to hear Peter Martin discuss wattie's banishment on the phone-in. It reminded me of St Patrick and the snakes, for the month that's in it!!!
