Celtic fans keeping Barcelona beautiful

Celtic supporters groups and several web sites, including Celtic Quick News, have pooled resources to provide every fan travelling to Barcelona with a bin bag bearing the message, “Celtic fans…. keeping Barcelona beautiful” in English and Spanish.

The white bags with green writing will be distributed at all major Scottish airports and at the ‘Celtic village’ in Barcelona.

I believe it is the first time fans of any club have taken steps to make a zero litter impact on visiting a city, which is sure to attract Spanish media attention.

If you are heading out, please participate.

The bin bag idea, by the way, is a brilliant concept. I hope this effort not only catches the attention of Spanish media, but of Europe as a whole and soon is copied by all. UEFA needs to step up and highlight this as well. Add this as reason #47,932,391 why Celtic fans are the greatest in all of World sport.

I am breaking off from packing. A group of us flying out from Glasgow via Amsterdam tomorrow. First pickup at 4.00 am. Will be enjoying a fine meal at a quality restaurant just off Via Laietana tomorrow night then off to enjoy the craic. Have a few recommended venues and we are trying to avoid Las Ramblas. Back on Thursday so we have a fair bit of time to enjoy a lovely city.

Good luck to all those who are fortunate enough to be heading off to Barca !

On a separate note, I trust we are about to inundated with complaints from all those Aiden McGeady haters that populate Scottish football grounds, and indeed from the press, concerning the prospect of Phil Bardsley considering playing for Scotland. He's not Scottish, is he ? Surely there will be a campaign to stop him ? Surely ? Mmmmm.

Well I managed to ignore these kind wishes, so please pass on my apologies to him, along with my best wishes to his good self and his family.

Are you joining the mass exodus of Celtic supporters to see the SUPPOSEDLY WORST Celtic team since nineteen canteen play Barcelona?

STAND UP FOR THE SOON TO BE DEPOSED CHAMPIONS, that is if you are to believe some posters on this blog these last few days.

    I mucjh prefer,

STAND UP FOR THE CURRENT, AND SOON TO BE NEWLY CROWNED, YET AGAIN CHAMPIONS OF SCOTLAND, CELTIC.

Unfortunately I was listening to Real Radio this afternoon - my daughter was in the car.

Apparently the Scottish Government asked them to put an item on their web site asking Celtic fans to behave in Barcelona. This was a response to previous "incidents" between Spanish police and Scottish football fans.

I was raging. I don;t remember "incidents" during our two recent trips there and I'm sure there won't be any this time. And was any mention made of Juan Laporta's comments on our travelling fans' behabiour? Of course not.

A word of warning to all travelling be VERY careful with your wallets and stuff.
I was there last couple of times and got wallet dipped on second visit on las ramblas ( i think) didnt even feel it going untill i went to buy a burger at the game.A few mates also got dipped and conned at ATM cash machines.
The thiefs and pickpockets are real pros as my wallet was removed from my front trouser pocket out of site under a long top.
It was a pity cause as everyone else celebrated our only away point ever , i was pretty dejected as i had about 240 euros, bank card and hotel room key taken.
Kinda a put me off going away to watch us and havent been away since as that trip cost me over 700 quid.
So enjoy guys but be on your gaurd ..always.

Looking forward to Tuesdays game, I know I am letting my heart rule my head here but....

watching a team that couldn't score against Bolton over 180 minutes of football put 4 past Barca gives me hope. The knowledge that Celtic threatened Barca twice and scored twice at home, gives me hope. The fact that we know what we need to do and will set out our stall to play football to the best of our ability gives me hope. Scott Brown buzzing around Toure means he wont have the time and space he enjoyed in the 1st leg to dictate the pace of the game. Samaras' 2 goals in last 2 outings from crosses by Aiden tells me that these 2 are developing a great understanding of each others game.

Yes Bhoys I have hope and a dream, as one of our main sponsors motto goes - "Just Do It"

    Good evening fellow celtic supporters,
I thouroughly enjoyed yesterdays game and at no time during the game did I think we would get beat, they filled me with that much confidence.
I am not a Donatti fan, but yesterday I thought he played well and with a bit more dig than I'm used to seeing him play. Brown I thought and hoped would be rested, thank gord I'm in no position to make such decisions. Yesterday for me was Aidens finest hour, he was kicked off the park but has stopped waitinbg for the whistle which IMO shows the biggest step in his maturity, if he can continue the rest of the season with that attitude we will win, unless he is crippled (which I wouldnt be too surprised if it happened, as I think yesterday also showed the rest of the SPL its open season on us). I pray this does not happen though.
Also I think the new Aiden song lifted his game. We are the best team in the SPL by far, if we can keep our mouths shut and out ego's in check we will destroy anyone we opose.
    hail hail

I'd love to say yes, but no, I'm afraid my contacts all cover religious affairs.

All I can offer is to translate any statement you may have prepared and email it to everybody I can think of.

The bags actually have begun to have some coverage. I have seen reports of adverts that the city of Barcelona took out in some Scottish print media specifically asking the Celtic fans to leave Barcelona as beautiful as they find it. So it's as though the 'bags' initiative is really a reaction to that, and the credit goes to city hall.

As you know, because you mentioned it weeks ago, the behaviour of the Celtic fans has become an electoral issue.

The socialists are in power in Barcelona and in the Spanish parliament. The opposition in Barcelona at least, the conservative nationalist party Convergència i Unió, has already begun referring to Celtic fans in the build up to the elections a week from today.

It will be tight. If these people can claim any advantage over the socialists owing to anything the Celtic fans do, they will. If the Celtic fans behave as impeccably as always, the socialists may claim that it's all thanks to them.

We are the wee white plastic ball in their ping-pong battle and I for one am deeply unhappy about it.

Do a wee statement. I'll help you distribute it.

I like the plastic bag idea, if as someone on here said, the weather will be wet, so for anyone forgetting waterproofs turn the bag upside down tear holes near top left and right sides of the bag and viola you have a waterproof. Keep dry and healthy for the quarter final and put your rubbish in the bins provided.

To be fair the bar staff in the pubs were decent. They offered their own mobiles to use as some of use had no reception, or offered to take us to payphones and wait with us.

Still not as bad as the hotel we stayed in being ram raided the night of the game.

Came back steamin about 3am to find a Saab jammed in the revolving doors at the front of the hotel.
Car reversed at high speed and robbers jumped out to steal reception till.
We were so relaxed we sat with the police and night porter for a few more shandies.

when we do get to the final of the champs league in May, the stay at home hoops fans should make their way to the hun bastion of Moscow Ayrshire, taking it over and turning into a sea of green and white. Reference the political football and the impending elections in Spain.
There has been some trouble in Madrid with rioting so passions may be running high.

Just a warning to Celtic fans to be aware of the under currents.

    29 Feb 2008 23:15:41 GMT
    Source: Reuters
    By Andrea Comas

MADRID, Feb 29 (Reuters) - Spanish police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at anti-fascist protesters in central Madrid on Friday night as they tried to stop a right-wing rally near an immigrant area of the city.

Anti-fascists threw rocks behind burning barricades in narrow cobbled streets and at least one car was set alight. Some of hundreds of far-right activists, separated from left-wing protesters by lines of riot police, gave Nazi salutes.

According to a Reuters witness more than 1,000 anti-fascists gathered to protest the far-right meeting in Tirso de Molina, a few hundred metres from Madrid's main square, after local authorities sanctioned the rally.

The violence comes just over a week before Spaniards vote in a general election where immigration has become a major issue for the first time.

Posters had been pasted on walls in the area earlier in the week warning of a racist demonstration. Protesters, joined immigrants, blocked roads leading down into Lavapies, an area with a large African and Chinese populations.

Demonstrators chanted "You shall not pass," and "Brother Carlos, we will not forget you", referring to 16-year-old Carlos Javier Palomino, an anti-racist protester who was stabbed and killed during a confrontation with rival groups last November.

A spokesman for Madrid's ambulance service said nobody had been injured though left-wing media said one protester had been blinded in one eye.

Anti-fascist protesters also threw bricks through the windows of several banks and smashed up offices inside, eyewitnesses said.

The number of migrants living in Spain has increased fivefold in the last 10 years and now account for 9 percent of Spain's 45 million people.

The opposition Popular Party calls immigration a "problem" and proposes measures to compel immigrants to integrate, including restricting the use of Islamic headscarves. The ruling Socialist party has dismissed the Popular Party proposals as xenophobic. (Writing by Ben Harding)

On the media reaction to the Jock Stein issue: last year I spoke to a few senior media people who were all appalled at the issue, but felt they should follow the club, who were in contact with the family over the issue.

They are not complicit in this one.

Discybhoy, I can assure you that Noel90 is certainly not OK. He is in exactly the same condition he always has been. I think you will agree that is far from OK.

    Discybhoy,

Rest assured that Noel 90 is in the rudest of rude health.

He's been doing some undercover work for the government, involving the issue of plastic bags for cleaning up the Mess(i) in Barca.

On an unrelated matter, did anyone notice the link posted earlier about Skinty Murray's venture into attic conversions. Lofty ambitions, eh?

    Paul67 & fellow bloggers,

You would have probably noticed Myself and Kano have a bit of a ding dong over our two central defenders yesterday.

What's everybodys take on it? Am i being too to critical? Does anybody feel the same? Or am i alone on this one?

so they are going to lower the surface to put in 300 new seats that will be under water every time the Clyde rises above 4 meters depth and filling in the corners!

also, I take it their 3 million profit is now zero since Cousin cannot go to Fulham?

I think it's about opinion. I happen to think DO'D is better than either and Bobo is necessary in some games. GC should be back up to Big Mick. Don't know if JFK will come back. I think Bobo will move on. We need a CH in the summer. I hope Darren gets his chance with us. I think he will be BIG. Scott Cuthbert might go all the way too!

I did not see your debate but my views are

Gary Caldwell, I will always support when on the park playing for the hoops but I do not rate him as a central defender. I did not rate him when he was at Hibs and was disappointed when we signed him. I hold no personnal ill to the man but as a defender he makes too many basic mistakes. His headed clearances always tend to find an opposition player or fall somwhere around the edge of D towards the centre of the park. I just do not rate him. Hope he proves me wrong in time as it looks like he is here to stay.

McManus although a good CD is not a Captain as he is not vocal enough for me. We need a more experienced Captain. i think McManus would benefit greatly from more experience beside him, but not Pressley as he is Crap and is another who should never had the opportunity to wear our famous hoops. Nor is Bobo the answer as he to requires a guide on the park. We need to sign a good solid experience Central Defender in the summer. Another Myalby.

O'Dea I like a lot and your man Kennedy was looking good before his injury but I fear his time has passed at CP now. I could be wrong.

wgs..while the current manager is there then mick will start every game..

as for his partner??well both elvis and bobo will probably be away in the summer, dont think that jfk's fitness can be taken on trust and he doesnt seem to rate o'dea so barring injury caldwell will play regularly beside mick though i think that a centre half will be at the top of the managers wish list once the window reopens

    Lad's,

I think we might lose D O'Dea. He plays the same position and side as our captain and as long as WGS is kicking around it will remain that way.

I reckon O'Dea will leave and establish himself like Shay Given did when released by Lou Macari.

WGS, I have (honestly) missed the blog for several days now, so did not see your chat with Kano, however, it is one area of the team I expect to be strengthened in the summer.

Moonbeams, could be. They will return a healthy profit this season due to the Hutton sale.

  • At 02/03/08 22:47, Blogger moonbeams wet dream said…

O'Dea has something sadly lacking in our current CD position. He has pace. With his pace our defence could sit further up the park instead of on our 18 yard line which seems to have been the case this season. He has the potential to be one of the best CD's operating in 'the not so great Britain'.

To me our two best CBs are
    O'Dea and Balde

They are quicker, stronger and more effective in both boxes

Have you noticed how SB and MD are asked to "fill in " in front of GC when the opposition are taking either kick outs or free kicks ?

Bobo especially drives the whole team forward just by winning headers !

Currently our midfield are constantly holding back because they have no confidence in the ball being won cleanly

If you add that weakness to the lack of a dominant centre mid - oh for a Yaya Toure !- then you will see why I think that we will struggle against the buns unless WGS changes the team to bring in some dig !

I know DO'D is held in high esteem by coaches at CP. I think you may be right though. I think we could lose a very good young player. He was immense in the San Siro. Pressley was a stopgap. Should have been shown the door after the most abject performance in a cup final. No-one complains about his wages compared to Bobo's. Even although there is probably £27,700 a week of a difference :-)

Is that a fictional or non-fictional profit. I think some of the reported 7/8/9/10/11... million paid to the Gers was never actually paid due to debts owed to the part owners of Spurs. I could be wrong but am most probablt right as Hutton was never worth that amount of cash based on his experience and half a good season. You do not pay that kind of cash for potential.

    jbj713,

Cannot disagree with you there. Gordon's team selection against Rangers will make and break the league for us. Has he learnt from his last 2 visits to Ibrox? We'll soon see. I have my doubts. IF Flecther and Nish can bully those two then Cousin or Darcheville will do the same.

I would say he's will have to go with a Hartley, Robson, Brown, McGeady midfield at Ibrox. I would love to see Samaras up against Weir and Cuellar. That could be the ace we have up our sleeve.

Given the way O Dea played that night in the San Siro i was suprised he never got the chance to cement his place like JK got after Barcelona.

He was dropped for Pressley in the OLd Firm derby that preceded that clash and never been seen since.

    Agree about Ibrox

I would play Bobo at the back
    and go with your midfield.
A possible wild card for midfield might be young Wilson- a good engine and not afraid to mix it

I would be happy to come away from IPOX with a draw and then win the 2 paradise games. Although a victory would be good and no doubt WGS will be going for victory we need to make sure our defense does not leak a goal or 2. I am not usually one to play for a draw and it is something the hoops basically are not capable of doing but a draw would be a good result for us. At all cost we cannot afford to lose this one.

Cousin bullied us at Ibrox. He even knocked Mick out!! As someone posted here, if he tried that with Bobo, when he woke up his clothes would be out of fashion. (BFDJ would buy them)
Bobo is a timebomb but is a Hunskelper.
If we win 3 in a row the Huns will go into meltdown. Would that suit our PLC?

    WGS,

Don't know what game you were watching ,but I didn't see Fletcher and Nish boss anyone.

Fletcher played one cross field pass about twenty minutes into the game, his first touch and Nish won one header that led to Rankine's effort.

I honestly don't recall another relevant involvement in the match by either.

You either trust Gordon Strachan or you don't. I do.

DO'D is young and has great potential, but his youth could lead to a form slump if he was a regular central defender and that could harm him.

Whilst Caldwell and Mc.Manus are also relatively young, they have a bit more experience and it is with those two that Gordon is attempting to create a continuity of partnership.

By all means have your selection favourites, but don't turn it into a crusade, because ,after all, you know as much about football as I do, :>)

He did Mick then tried to do O'Dea- to me someone should have sorted him out in the second half !

Unfortunately we are too nice for that !

    Thom the Tim,

How does O'Dea get experience without getting experience. Egg and Chicken comes to mind.

The more experience he gets the better he gets. All players go through form slumps and O'Dea I'm sure will be no different.

I do not follow your reasoning.

    Thom The Tim,

O'Dea I rate highly. Bobo not one of my favourites buy from my point of view he is the most dominating centre half we have.

It's not a crusade just merely stating my opinion.

Sorry Thom the Thim, missed an H out there.

Footy is all about opinions which is one of the things that keeps us interrested. The pub talk after the game. If we all agreed then Paul67 could just post his article and none of us would have to read it because we already new we would agree and this whole CQN thingy would be pointless.

As long as it does not go to extreme (SS and K come to mind) CQN is damned good fun to be involved in.
