Celtic should be free of usual claustrophobia in Barcelona

I think we have all seen too much football to be fooled into thinking that Barcelona losing four goals at the weekend offers any consolation to Celtic ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League game, but I am hoping for something different.

Champions League away games have too often been claustrophobic, but after losing the home leg, and with very low expectations, Celtic might liberated into playing with more freedom than usual.

90 minutes in the Nou Camp is a long time, and if the first leg taught us anything it is that we should not take the lead too early against Barcelona, so I expect Celtic to keep it tight for the first half, but if it is 0-0 at half time we might be in for an entertaining second period.

    Fair comment DBBIA.

Although I am not expecting anything from the game, it would be great to at least stick one in the net, if only to give the Bhoys over there something to cheer about.
But as Paul says if we can keep it tight for 45mins, who knows what will happen??

Realistically, if we do go for it, you cannot help but foresee them scoring, at least once, especially on the counter attack. However, I would rather go down 3-1 or 4-1 having had a right go at them than just sitting back and having the odd attack letting them put on a show.
IMHO their defence is the weakest part of their team and if we can hold onto the ball in midfield - unlike the first leg - then we can put them under some pressure and hopefully nick one, preferably round about the hour mark and leave the last 30mins with something to really play for. That is assuming of course, that we have stopped them scoring up to this point!!

Where there is a will and all that.

    CMON THE HOOPS!!!

#46 McGeady jersey to be the most sought after shirt when the Barca players are looking to swap at the end of the 94 minutes, while they are being booed off the pitch by a home support who have just witnessed a second half capitulation.

From this morning's Herald: "The Polish goalkeeper was cautioned by the referee, Iain Brines, for walking the length of the field while issuing ironic waves to the Hibernian supporters. He persisted even after being shown a yellow card and had to be dissuaded and shepherded by his team-mate, Gary Caldwell, towards the tunnel."

What is an ironic wave? What makes it different from a normal wave? And how does the referee know the difference? Has he some sort of mind reading powers that he can read a player's intent?

Scottish football seems to become more absurd every week.

I have to agree with dontbrattbackinanger's point of view.

To leave with pride and no injuries is the most I'm expecting. For some reason I'm just not up for this game at all. It's like the dye has been cast and I just want it over with - at minimal pain - so we can re-focus on the Championship.

I don't like it but that's the way I'm feeling right now. It's a bit sad, actually.

I remember my last trip to Barca, for the 0-0 game, me and Dub-Tim on Flash Gordon travel.

Bus from Gods counrty to Edinburgh (45 min), bus from Edinburgh to London (10 hours), taxi from central London to Gatwick (40min) flight to Zurich (2hours) sitting about Zurich airport (3 hours), flight to Barca (1.5) hours. Then back the same way !

Lying behind a row of seats as my legs had given in and I was too scared to watch, then hearing the final whistle and knowing we'd knocked out Barca, worth every minute.

    Barcelona 0 - Celtic 6 - Caldwel (15,45 & 75) minutes, Sno (30, 60 & 90 minute)

On talkSPORT this morning, Alan Brazil was talking about bad challenges in the EPL then he said he was watching the Celtic/Hibs game and said if that game was played in England Hibs would have been 4 yellows and a red in the first half he said no cards were showing till Scott Brown got carded.

However, I read once with interest an article of yours regarding some sort of "Balkan League" similar to the one they have in basketball. According to an article in the Guardian, FIFA (or was it UEFA?) didn't seem too against the idea.

Has anything been heard of this since or has it joined the Atlantic League in the Great Leagues in the Sky?

You never know what can happen, but I presume we’re already out, therefore a 0 – 1 would be very satisfying, if we could just manage it. For one thing we would have our away victory and 2ndly would confirm that we are the best in Scotland and would send out a reverberating warning to all those who dare cross our path or indeed look at us sideways.
If we manage to get through I’ll never do anything bad whatsoever, ever again.

The mind reading thing you talk about is not a new phenomenon. An often used phrase in the media and by many on CQN is

'Gary Caldwell is not as good a player as he thinks he is'

How do they all know what Gary is thinking???

Anyway, realistically I think this game can be summed up with a line from a famous song:
'We dont care if we win....'.

Obviously we all care every time if we win lose or draw but as it is unlikely we will win then a good performance,a goal or two and hopefully respect from the second greatest club side in the world on their own patch would do.

Somebody had better have a word with HRH before she comes to open the Games in 2014 that if she waves to the crowd[ and she is one of the World's great wavers] she might get lifted for breach of the Peace.

This is all part of a concerted effort to drive our best player out of Scotland.

I've just read the evening times article by matthew lindsay saying if Boruc waves to the fans at the nou camp he cud start a full scale riot

    they also say

"After his side's fine win over Hibs at Easter Rd on Saturday, he made a series of ill-considered, possibly obscene gestures at the home stands".

    AND

"He was, quite rightly, given a yellow card by astonished referee Iain Brines for actions which could easily have provoked an ugly, even violent, response"

    AND

"Boruc was extremely fortunate the vast majority of the Hibs supporters had already filed away from the stadium by that late stage in proceedings"..

    AND

"With any luck, we will be talking about the excellence of Celtic's play on Wednesday morning instead of the gross stupidity of their goalkeeper"

    unbelieveable

Celtic should give them a doin over this. I'm going to forward the story to the Celtic PR department to pass to Peter Lawell

    email away to the ET:

    Good afternoon,

I have just read the above titled "story" by Matthew Lindsay (http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/display.var.2088138.0.0.php) and I am unsure what emotion to have.
"After his side's fine win over Hibs at Easter Rd on Saturday, he made a series of ill-considered, possibly obscene gestures at the home stands" I assume that your "journalist" and I use the term loosely did not see what Mr Boruc done? Well I did, he waived at the crowd, yes thats right waived. I have been to many countries and seen many things but have yet to see someone waive obscenely, nor have I saw someone waive in a maner that would cause "a full scale riot".
Your publiction is fast becoming a joke. I will repeat Mr Borucs "ill-considered antics" and waive goodbye to the evening times.

I shall also be urguing my friends who read your so called newspaper to waive goodbye.
Before I go, I would like clarification on what other things Mr Boruc has done that made him "hit the headlines for the wrong reasons". Couldnt be for blessing himself that could it??
Only in Scotland could someone be pillored for blessing himself. Rather than blame Mr Boruc, I am pretty sure any sane and rational person would agree, that if the sight of a man blessing himself provokes you to violence, then it is you who has the problem.
    Yours,
never reading the evening times again

How about having endured an afternoon of "Artur Boruc, you're a ******, you're a ******"?

I wonder what the reaction would have been had his gesture been equal and opposite to the verbal abuse?

I just sent an email to that muppet from the evning times, though quite why I bother.....

    Hi

I just read your interesting article on Artur Boruc.

Your use of hyperbole is very interesting.

Just out of interest, at what point did Artur Boruc "snap" on Saturday? Was that the point that he smiled and waved to the Hibernian fans indicating they should give him more abuse? I have to admit he looked like he had "snapped" with his aggresive smile and waving. I mean, how dare he smile and playfully wave? Next thing we know, we will have a riot on our hand...... shocking, quite why the referee only saw fit to caution him lord alone knows.

After being wilfilly abused by the jolly home crowd for much of the afternoon and having being subjected to chants suggesting he enjoyed masturbation, this man (can we call him that?) had the temerity to grin and wave and show the crowd their abuse had no effect on him. Shocking, I for one would suggest the minimum of a ten game ban.

Frankly your article was representative of the usual nonsense written about Celtic Football Club and it's players, and why I am even bothering to respond to it is a mystery to me.

The laptop loyal are so into getting Boruc that they missed Aideninhio's petulent kick at a thuggish hibs defender a'la Beckham when he was fouled and lying face down in the pitch around the 80th (guessing) minute, even the GREAT SATANta commentator Boothless missed that one or he would of had a field day over it. It is no bad thing. For should the Pole snap and repeat his weekend antics then the Spanish authorities could have a full-scale riot on their hands.

After his side's fine win over Hibs at Easter Rd on Saturday, he made a series of ill-considered, possibly obscene gestures at the home stands.
He was, quite rightly, given a yellow card by astonished referee Iain Brines for actions which could easily have provoked an ugly, even violent, response.

Boruc was extremely fortunate the vast majority of the Hibs supporters had already filed away from the stadium by that late stage in proceedings.

    compare with ......

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/e/everton/7274812.stm

Goal celebrations are a personal matter and up to the player to decide," said Ross.

"No-one dictates what the player can do as long as he stays within the laws of the game and as long as it doesn't result in a caution.

"He is a very articulate young man and will have weighed up the pros and cons and decided to do it because it was a personal and emotional matter.

"I am sure Tim was fully aware that some people would not be in favour of what he did before he did it."

The FA refused to comment on the incident but did say that decisions regarding celebrations rest with the match officials, unless it is deemed that an abusive gesture has been made.

The Evening Times article certainly topped this in the Guardian by Ewan Murray

"Celtic have left a degree of controversy behind in Scotland. Artur Boruc, their eccentric goalkeeper, was correctly booked after full-time on Saturday for attempting to goad the Hibs support before leaving the field. Strachan's claim that his player had merely "clapped" towards the stands was incorrect, as was the manager's bizarre comment that there is a "national day of rejoicing" whenever Celtic lose. Boruc's actions were far from serious, but were certainly needless."

I couldn't be bothered with this since Mr Murray is at least consistent with his bias but Mr Lindsay stirred me to send this e-mail.

"I have sent an urgent e-mail to your Human Resources Department asking that they take prompt action regarding your state of mind. Clearly your sensitivity is such that it would be better that they ensure that you are accompanied from home to your workplace and back again lest someone replicates the ill-considered, possibly obscene gestures you seem to take offence at.

In fact I am quite astonished at the lack of response by my local police to my similar gesture towards my grandaughter and her friends when I left them at school this morning.

You and your other media colleagues couldn't possibly have some sort of agenda that has provoked your consistent reaction to the way this lack of issue has been presented?

TNT, thanks for the link, I think Artur should be reprimanded by GS for that, it is probably the most obscene form of waving I have ever seen. Artur you should be ashamed of yourself!

Time to get out the Numpty's address who wrote that article.

    Matthew,

A friend of mine has pointed out your ‘report’ into Saturdays game at Easter Rd.

Artur Boruc was singled out by the Easter Rd boo boys for special treatment, in fact they made up a special derogatory song just for him, and this song wasn’t possibly obscene, it was factually obscene.

Perhaps you may have noticed the obscene chants by the Hibs fans directed towards Paul Hartley, who wasn’t even playing, Gary Caldwell, and Aiden McGeady in between their abuse of Artur? The reason I ask is because your report makes no mention of any of this, only Artur’s ‘ill considered, possibly obscene gesture’ as he walked off with his team mates at the end of the match.

Were you at the game? Artur waved to the Hibs fans as he walked off the park, very brief, blink and you may miss it, but he did, I saw it, a wave, in between clapping his hands in the air toward each side of the ground. How the ref seen fit to book him is for this is unexplainable, unless, like you, he thought that Artur’s wave could possibly start a ‘full scale riot’.

C’mon get real Matthew, this isn’t the 1950s, people can see things for themselves and make their own minds up, its not like the good old days when journalists were needed for news. Your credibility will go down the pan unless you realize this is 2008 and that most of your readers will have internet access. Bin the creative stuff; you’re not very good at it.

I would actually urge you all to email and copy the journalist in question

    Dear Sir/Madam,

having witnessed on television and heard the vile abuse that was meted out to yesterday to Artur Boruc the Polish International goalkeeper at Easter Road by thousands of Hibernian fans and the good natured manner in which he received it. I can say that I was disappointed in the reaction of the referee to book him for what seemed like a good natured exchange between a truly international class goalkeeper and thousands of foul mouthed deranged Hibernian yobs.

Today upon reading the article " 'Artur & #8217;s parting shots were way out of line'" by Mathew Lindsay I was astounded to read a highly critical article of Artur Boruc. The portrayal of the actual events that I witnessed on television are so incongruous to what I actually witnessed that I am left asking the question is this responsible journalism?

I would have expected some investigative journalism as to why Boruc was singled out for such abuse. Was it that; his display in goal denied Hibernian from possibly adding to their points tally, that his warning from the CPS with regards blessing himself at Ibrox somehow raised the hackles of the Hibernian support only yesterday more than one year after the event.

Anyway I look at it I can only see very poor and irresponsible journalism from an irresponsible publication. His booking was a joke and reminded me of Gazza´s booking when he booked the referee with his lost card. I expected similar sympathetic treatment of Boruc. Your stance on your paper I presume is the ancient anti-catholic, anti foreign, anti Celtic propaganda that has reignited itself and is all too evident. Glasgow Rangers may very well win the league this year and lets hope the best team wins and that they win fair and square. Something that your organisation apparently and appallingly fails to understand.

To also predict that a Spanish riot could be started again shows a highly uneducated football correspondent. Any sport journalist in Glasgow would know that it is Rangers fans inspire Spanish Riots especially in Barcelona and that their fans with the FTP mentality are unwelcome. Whereas Celtic´s visits to Spain are marked with unprecedented FIFA and UEFA awards.

In the interests of not encouraging your anti Celtic agenda I will remove your URL from my bookmark and I will no longer read your publication.

    yours sincerely

Copy of a mail I sent to Matthew Lindsey of the Evening Times

Matthew, I read your article today in the Evening Times regarding Celtic's goalkeeper getting booked for "obscene gestures" towards the Hibs fans.

whilst reading your article it seemed that you must have seen something that TV pictures did not - could you please confirm what obscene gesture Mr Boruc made - I witnessed a few gestures but would not classify anyone of them as obscene.

    1. the "where's your singing now we've won?" gesture?
    2. the goodbye wave?
    3. the royal wave?

I do hope it is not the last one as the Queen may be in trouble soon during any of her travels north of the border.

All I ask of a journalist is to report fairly and impartally on what they have seen - you clearly have failed to do this in your article and I would ask for an apology to Mr Boruc by yourself and your editor.

one other point - how are your ears? could you not hear the abuse Mr Boruc was receiving throughout the match? perhaps that may explain why he interracted jovially with them, after all it's surely part of the banter at a football match, is it not?

Mr Brines showed the class of an official who was keen to book Artur rather than "SHOW SOME COMMON SENSE" and advise him to get off the park PDQ before he would book him. Ah yes that's right Celtic players don't get wee warnings they get booked. whilst on the subject of Mr Brines and his fellow whistlers I am witnessing teams coming to Celtic Park and being allowed to have two or three wild kicks at least before getting booked, which still sticks in my throat because Celtic went to Ibrox earlier this season and left with NINE BOOKINGS when there were less fouls made against Rangers than in any normal match against Celtic. Typically these teams would receive maybe 2 bookings maximum.

Any normal country would laugh off this incident, but you, your fellow journalists and the establishment are determined to drive good footballers who don't happen to play for Rangers out of this backward little country - ONE SCOTLAND? YOU ARE HAVING A LAUGH
