Celtic should throw caution to the wind in Barcelona

I don’t think Celtic have ever survived in Europe after having lost the first leg at home, so like you, I have hope in my heart, but not much conviction.

We could have left this competition as far back as August when a mid-season Spartak Moscow took us to penalty kicks, or in the autumn, when only heroics eliminated Benfica and Shakhtar Donetsk. But, if we are to go out tonight, let’s go out attacking.

Twice we have earned a point in the Camp Nou with a backs-against-the-wall campaign, some heroic goalkeeping and an opportunist goal from John Hartson, but we seldom crossed the half way line in either game.

I hope Gordon Strachan finds being a goal down liberating; we have three on-form strikers and two on-form creative players. Play all five of them Gordon, and give Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Deco, Henry and Messi something to aspire to.

    Afternoon all,

Almost hate myself for doing this (incase I jinx them) but…..

I’ve got a funny feeling that tonight could be our night!

Absolutely NO logical reasoning behind it. Just a “feelin”.
(not like me really, coz I’m normally a realist)

    C’mon the hoops!!!!!

Barca have only five distinct scorers in their last 7 games: Ronaldinho, Henry, Eto'o, Messi & Xavi. Celtic have had nine different players on the score-sheet in the same number of games.

At least we have a pretty good idea of where the danger will be coming from, whereas they just won't know who is going to hit them...

Perhaps it will indeed be an extra time injury time winner from Boruc after all!

Let's go out after a 4-4 draw, coming back from being 4-0 down at halftime with goals from GCaldwell[a header from 25 yards] and a hat-trick from ESno.

We live the pitch to a standing ovation from the entire Nou Camp.

This Euro-soccer is all very well but our focus has to lie elsewhere this season.

I'm off to the turf accountants to see what kind of wager my scenario will attract.

TrueTim, (from last article)completely agree with you, we should always aspire to be better, and I also agree wholeheartedly with most of your nitpicks.

Agree also with the headline post Paul, lets have a go tonight.
0-0 is no good, lets show them that we CAN compete away from home as well.
We have flair players, so lets try and use them.
Ball retention is essential, and I think we may see a surprise in midfield.

    Get intae them.

    Mackybhoy, agree.

Nakasleftpeg, agree, we have the flair players, but with Samaras and Vennegoor we have the aerial players too.

I'm not so sure about this throwin caution to the wind stuff, did we not try that a fortnight ago at Parkhead?

What usually happens in the SPL when a team tries that against us?

I don’t think the 2-3 defeat was a fluke, more to do with them simply having better players.

Would rather we denied them space, stopped them from playing, and tried to catch them on the break.

The tie is not beyond us, but imo it will be if we try to take them on at their own game.

Would love to be wrong of course, that would be brilliant.

  • At 04/03/08 14:00, Blogger StevieS said…

Would love what you suggest to come true Paul. But I agree with itzallova.

I was thinking more along the lines of a 5-man midfield

    Naka, Brown, Hartley, Robson, McGeady

With Samaras as the lone striker, as he has the height of JVOH and the speed/footwork of McD (don’t know how he is at holding the ball up though)

Plenty of support/scoring options AND defensive help from that midfield.

Throw extra strikers on if needed later.

    p.s. I’ve taken ALL the pills I’m afraid :-)

My ONLY concern tonight is that our support have a happy & trouble -free experience, & return home safe with our reputation enhanced.
I am completely relaxed about the result. We have already exceeded my hopes for this year's campaign. Our Final was against Spartak Moscow. Everything else is a bonus.
Now let's get back to what is really important, which is to wipe out that four point deficit & achieve that long dreamed of... 3rd successive title.
Onward & upward,...& maybe in a season or two..............

Gordon's use of substitutions will be key.

    Mon the Hoops!!

All this chase the game talk. I think Gordon's first European game might influence his thinking on this.

  • At 04/03/08 14:11, Blogger BigChipSuk said…

    I'll take this scenario...

0:22 minutes: Brown's drive from outside the area is deflected over Valdes' despairing dive, but grazes the top of the crossbar.

2:00 minutes: With his first touch of the ball Skippy knocks in the opener with his knee from the resultant corner kick.

3:00-89:45 minutes: Celtic defend resolutely with their backs firmly to the wall, repelling wave after wave of Barcelona pressure.

89:46 minutes: Celtic are awarded a freekick 25 yards out from the Barcelona goal. With the Barca defence & Valdes expecting a trademark curler towards the postage stamp corner, Nakamura fizzes a daisy-cutter underneath the (jumping) players in the Barcelona wall and into the back of the net.

90:00 minutes: The history books are re-written as Celtic lay their CL away-day hoodoo to eliminate the competition favourites and progress to the quarter finals.

Mmmm, that sounds a bit like a game I once witnessed at Anfield!

Like many on here I live in hope rather than expectation tonight but my main concern as it is for most others is for the SPL Title and I hope we do not experience the horrible dip in form that we got after the last 16 tie a year ago in Milan.

I realise the circumstances are very different to 12 months ago but the tightness of this race means we cannot afford a single slip.

Maybe the Scottish Cup tie is the best thing for us this weekend after what I'm sure will be a very tiring night in the Camp Nou tonight.

Best of luck Celtic and do us proud regardless of the result.

Paul and all, I mentioned after the first leg that Toure was the man playing the transition game for Barca, at least 75% of the play from front to back came through him. Mark him closely and you will stifle their game.

I believe WGS will play a five man mid with Naka playing a free role.
Three strikers to finish for us and walking out of the Nou Camp with a 2-0 win and on to the last eight.

    From the Vital Celtic site:

"Bookmakers are offering some attractive odds, with Celtic around 100/1 to win by a scoreline that will be enough to reach the quarter-finals of Europe's premier club competition, while a price of around 9/1 is available for Gordon Strachan's side to score at any point during the match."

I'm not sure about winning or going through but 9/1 for a Celtic goal seems unusually generous.

  • At 04/03/08 15:19, Blogger Glasgowsellick said…

    Paul,

Do you not fear that a 4 nil or more defeat could have an adverse affect on the teams confidence?

I would certainly go on the offensive, but with the 4-4-2 formation consisting of Donati,Brown,Aiden and Naka.

I would love to play Jan and Samaras together, but how do you drop SMcD? Samaras seems to be a bit of an Impact Player, therfore I would leave him on the bench to come on and grab that vital 2nd goal in the last half hour!!

This post was supposed to be rational!!

    Good luck bhoys!!

    It's not just in Scotland.

Lawyers representing Marco Materazzi have just issued a news release saying that a court case against something called the Daily Star has been successful.

This 'newspaper' printed headlines, body copy and even a speech bubble coming out of a photograph claiming that one of the reasons Zinedine Zidane sank the heid on the Italian defender during the 2006 World Cup Final was that Materazzi had said Zizou's maw was a "terrorist $£*$*".

Apparently, the 'newspaper' now accepts that this was completely made-up tosh and that Materazzi said no such thing.

  • At 04/03/08 15:22, Blogger BigChipSuk said…

So the required 2-0 win for Celtic, backed by just £20, will finance an all expenses paid 5-star trip to Moscow for the final.

Maybe Peter Lawwell should back Celtic at £10,000 a man to win 2-0, and he can tell the players that their chance of a £1 million a man bonus is entirely down to them.

And if Celtic back themselves with a £500,000 wager they could secure a £50 million transfer kitty for the summer strengthening!!!

    bhouysfour,
I tried to post a similar post an hour ago. Toure was THE problem in Celtic park. Also Naylor givng Messi too much room on the wing. It wasn't so much that Messi would beat Naylor when he got possesion, but rather that he was a way out for the midfield when we pressurized them. They were able to hit Messi , and to a lesser extent, Ronaldinho, with forty yard passes. Had we been tighter, it would have made their job much harder.
Jack Charlton mastered the art of negating star forwards by squeezing their suppliers. Brown and Donati have the energy to do this. Like the ROI, the forwards, McGeady, Samaras,Skippy, have to run the bo**ix of themselves when Barca have possesion.
It will probably mean having to use our subs with 20/ 15 mins to go, but it is a system that can win games.
If we are to lose, so be it, but PLEASE, don't let it be because of a stupid mistakes from our own players.
Barca were the better team in Celtic Park, but we scored from our own invention, they scored ALL three goals from our mistakes/panics.
To all in Barcelona; have a ball !
The game is being shown on SKY SPORTS 2.

I am putting it down to Road to Damascus-esque experience rather than the moment of madness it surely was.

You are so right. We have nothinhg to lose. I feel ahould go for it. We know that Barcelona are a class act. Let our own class acts loose on them ( and I would include Evander Sno in that). We might get hammered but the football should be glorious. Far better to go out having graced the tournament. We may even win. What a victory that would be. A night not just to remember but to treasure, like Anfield.

Someone mentioned that it is on Sky Sports 2. Thank you, whoever you are. You have just made my day.

    How things might pan out.

After taking a pummelling for the 1st half hour, we put our heads above the parapet and see over the smoking battlefield that no further damage has been inflicted upon us; it’s still 0 – 0.
Soon afterwards, Scott Brown slips magnificently on his erse and wins us a free kick outside Barcas box. As oor Ninja warrior lines himself up, he sees a vision of Alan Thompson throttling Henrik, which then fast forwards to a Liverpool v Celtic Uefa game. What…?, of course. Inspired by this vision, Naka curls a curly free kick which loops into the net. Yaaaaaasss, and on the stroke of half time an ‘aw. And its 1 – 0 to the Hoops.
Who’s worried now? Moi? No way.
After an immensely enjoyable 15 min break, (for us), Barca throw everything forward to try and settle the tie. Artur, that yellowest of perils says no, and just like that guy Neo in the Matrix, he merely puts up his hand to stop the balls raining down on him. Ronaldinho and Eto’o look at each other and run screaming in panic all over the pitch. Henry runs after them telling them shhh.
Cometh the 80th min. and Aiden magnificently outmanoeuvres Puyol by standing still. He then wills the ball to Skippy who skips hops and jumps then threads the ball through to an express train arriving on the edge of the box in the shape of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who thrashes and I mean thrashes the ball into the net. Yaaaaaaaaaasssssss. Yaaaaaaaaaaasssssss.

Will we survive the last 10 mins? Find out in the latest episode of the heroic adventures of Celtic Football Club.

I’m off to lie down now, or am I dreaming?

I don't often have vivid dreams about football - but i did last night. 2-0 to the Hoops. I was gutted when i woke up!

    Anyway, i've been thinking about this throughout the day and believe it's a prophecy. My logic is this;

Barca lost 4 goals to a team that couldn't score against Bolton - who are regularly cuffed by Man Utd - who we beat in a head to head last season!

    I've invested £5 on 2-0 at 66-1.

In case you're interested, Naka scores the winner at the death!

On the way home tonight I passed 3 ET vendors and made a point of telling them that I was boycotting their paper. we should all do this.

Ironically, someone had discarded a copy on the train (honest!) and a quick scan revealed that Ronnie Cully penned virtually the back 6 pages himself. Lindsay had one wee article included. Go on , have a guess?

That's right, an update that the SFA have backed Brines!

Is tonight to be the second greatest victory in the history of Celtic???> Pushing which game into third, for me the 4-3 against Juve is up there.

My 3-year old daughter has just told me that Celtic will win 3-1 - weirdly, she's more often right than wrong (about 4 out of 5 right)- and she doesnt always say that Celtic will win...... here's hoping!!!

Big Jan is up front on his own with Naka in behind. So much for throwing caution to the wind.

    stv barca celtic live online

Thought this might come in handy for those without sky living in the UK outside of Scotland or in Scotland without access to a TV.

Off to put a bet on Celtic to score.

    From the official site:

The Catalan Police were delighted with the event and with the thousands who have invaded Barcelona over the past couple of days. They said: “The behaviour of the Celtic fans, both last night and today, has been fantastic.”

    Round 1 to Celtic.

Actually, JVOH up front with Naka in behind is my favored setup for the first 60. Skippy and Gorgeous George for the final 30 will make an impact.

Your last resort would be uefa.com. Their stream is very good and also reliable.
It will cost a couple of shekels though.

ESPN2 is carrying the AC Milan Arsenal game live and
ESPN Classic has a delayed showing of the game at 5PM EST.

'GG don't worry about that, thanks for going to the trouble of getting the info. I can get access to sky sports from my brothers house, but that's a tad to far. I might have stv and definatley have itv border scotland, so hope it's on there on. If not will head over to the brother's house to watch it!

    Take it easy

If we play Naka central in front of Scott B & Massimo/Paul H it appears Gordon is going to try to interfere with their golden triangle of Toure, Iniesta & Deco.

Barry on the right side of midfield?

Mark W or Paul C at RB?

Naka behind JVoH I called that right except I said Samaras and a 3 man defence and Sno starting but other than that it is close to what I said earlier 6-0 Bhoys.

I step out to put a we line on tonight £2 accumulator (throwing caution and money to the wind)with Mr Hills - Celtic, Milan, Manure, Sevilla, Ipswich, Plymouth and Wolves pay out £434.85. Sure bet the only one I am worried about is the Manure game.

    Mon the Hoops

    So are we loking at:

    Boruc
    Wilson Caldwell McManus Naylor
    Brown Donati Hartley McGeady
    Nakamura
    JVoH

  • At 04/03/08 18:50, Blogger Sean said…

That seems like a sensible line up to me and I'm especially glad that Wilson is back. I'm a little worried that Jan's lack of pace might be problem as he doesn't have anyone playing off him. I think we can expect Samaras and Skippy to come on with about half an hour to go.

AC Milan is playing at the San Siro tonight. My guess is either UEFA, Inter, or both don't think it's fair to play a game on the same pitch tomorrow?
