Dougal, scourge of SFA appeals board, to referee Ibrox game

The SPL have appointed Stuart Dougal to referee Saturday’s enormously important league game at Ibrox.

In November an embittered Dougal launched an attack on the integrity of the SFA appeals board, chaired by Lord McLean, after it halved a touchline band handed out to Gordon Strachan.

After the hearing, Dougal said, “When you start having lawyers and lords against a humble referee, we can’t compete.

"In simple terms, there was sufficient doubt put into the minds of Lord McLean and his colleagues on the appeals board by Celtic's solicitor.”

Dougal is the only SFA referee ever to suggest the appeals board chairman was acting against him and after his November outburst I expected Dougal’s career to drift towards obscurity.

We can only hope no residue of resentment exists towards the Celtic manager and conspiracy theorists are proven wrong when "things even themselves out" on Saturday, as I am sure they will.

Every Celtic player will have to be on their best behaviour - turn the other cheek mode - on Saturday. Rangers heavy challenges will go unpunished and any Celtic retaliation will be clamped down upon heavily. If we start picking up yellow cards, never mind reds, early on I fear the game will be lost.

From the last. I wasn't suggesting it should be illegal to hate Celtic, but that hatred of Celtic is now the only outlet for generations of now illegal prejudice, which is the same as saying it's about much more than rivalry. It goes much deeper. The examples are all around you.

Lennindinho18 :- Due to problems with blogger Paul is posting far more threads than usual, this can lead to mix ups in a replyI left an answer on the last thread and have pasted it here.

Lenondinho18 :- This isn't a cop out but I honestly haven't heard that chant at Ibrox, if it were being chanted I would be happy to condemn it. Sorry about not answering last time, I do remember reading it and meant to answer. The only chant/sound that I can think on that I've heard used at corners outside the normal songs is a long drawn out "ooooooh" like the Zulu chant in the film of the same name or the chant by the Germanic army in Gladiator.
I'm not saying no one at Ibrox shouts out paramilitary slogans but it's been a long while since I've heard any concerted chants about it.

Alobundy :- While I do know there are chants against a Celtic great take place and I do disagree with them I think you have your chants mixed up, I can't see any way the "oooooh" chant can be against anyone connected with Celtic.

What i would like to see is the Celtic players hit the deck at every chance and us to go absolute Tonto at every challenge - put Dougall under pressure coz thats what they did to McCurry.

We have the better players if we play the correct team no matter what any Hun mason does we will win.

Apologies for misreading the intent behind your question and therefore my response to you.

In further answer to both you and Hoople, as far as I am concerned, if, as has been stated elsewhere, the Fifa Rule does not apply to friendlies, any player that does not wish to participate in any friendly international has the right to withdraw himself from his country's squad, should he wish to do so.

It may harm his future chances of international call-up's (dependant upon the international manager's thought's) but I think the right to do so should still be there, especially when the player/his club has a match of vital importance the following weekend.

Can I now draw a halt and withdraw my participation in this subject please? I feel jaded and need to recover my energies and focus for the important articles coming up this week :-)

This will not happen again as we will win on saturday.

    Gweedore

Scott McDonald nearly scored in the first minute of that game. McGregor, to his credit, made a great save.

From the resulting corner, McGregor, to his discredit, assaulted Scott McDonald, who retaliated and could have been sent off. He only got a yellow card, which a lot of people said at the time was lenient of McCurry (and I suppose it was).

However, he was far more lenient towards McGregor who, in keeping with the laws of the game, should have been sent off and left his substitute facing a penalty kick. In other words, it could have been so different.

I will tell you what hurts,
The fact that wgs was a terrific player and played with qaulity defenders and midfielders and serves up a team lacking spirit and fight so far.
MON was not my favourite manager but he always put a competetive team on the park hence his results against the dark side (with one exception which he remedied within a week)
I have been supporting celtic since the dark days of the fifties
and I remember the 1957 league cup
when they breached the "iron curtain" seven times and as you are a betting man you would have had your tank on the dark side that day like everybody else.

    Paul,

I've always believed that the refs only make a difference when we and them are evenly matched. For much of the last 7 years the Rt Rev Ian Paisley himself could have been in the middle and we would still have hammered them.

Good point, perhaps I am harsh but let’s not forget the bottle merchants all over the pitch.

With the lack of shape and no discernable tactics we got what we deserved.

You no doubt have played football as I have and it’s strange how when you pull out of tackles or are half hearted you sometimes end up fouling people.

We had players on that pitch that had no right to wear the hoops.

It’s Strachans job to ensure they are not on the pitch on Saturday. We all know who they are.

The first game at Ibrox was as bad as it gets.

However, I am sure the pride of all of our people both players and coaching staff will not let this happen again.

This is why I am confident we will beat the Huns on Saturday.

I have to say that WGS with a lower budget has more than matched MON over inflated budget. So all credit to him.

WGS might not have had the money that MON was given but to say that he hasn´t served up a team lacking in spirit and fight is nonsense as far as I am concerned.

    I’m with you Celtic-First 15:41.
It is so transparent what is going on, but the truth isn’t being told, and this is what sticks, it’s the downright dishonesty about it all from the huns and newspapers to the radio and TV. It is a shambles an embarrassment and cheating. But, a club that cloaks itself with words like dignity must have something to be ashamed about otherwise it’s a pretty stupid way to describe a football club. The Fod have always looked after themselves, and let Scotland come second. And Celtic send their players, glad to honour our country.
This has often been the case, and yet many Celtic players get ignored for important games and world cups.
Unfortunately, we are preaching to the converted once again. We see this, the rest don’t want to or ignore it. Sometimes I hope the almighty sees this injustice – ok I know its football – but it still affects our lives and poisons our society. We have put up with this for as long as I can remember, thanks to internet we can now communicate and reach many supporters with our thoughts and opinions on all these matters. Bizarrely the media have access to all this too, they read and must understand our grievances and still don’t tell the truth, not even that they use our discontent to stir up more distress between supporters.

    To the countdown:
I for one can certainly see us beating the Fod, and by God they need a good skelping. The Mib will intervene a some point, this won’t be a fair contest, but like I and others on here have already posted, we have the better players. We only need to get stuck in, just get stuck in, and a win will give us the momentum to go on and win a row of games, while the Fod start flapping.

It’s magic you know, it’s gonnae be 3 in a row

    Hail Hail

    Chairbhoy,

To be honest I wasn't sure either, but I am certain that another poster confirmed this earlier, either yesterday or this morning.

Otherwise my whole stand would be wrong, as, like you and others, I am not in favour of bending/breaking the laws of the game, even although we know they have no compunction whatsoever in doing so.

Re, the choice of Dougal, my initial thought was: "It could've been worse!"
However after reading Paul's article and being reminded of Dougal's stand vis-a-vis the Neil Lennon incident, now I am not so sure.

A MIB at any time is trouble enough, but one potentially holding a grievance against us????
Batten down the hatches Bhoys, it could be a long 90 mins!!

Gweedore mate, I am surprised at your naiviety, surely you must be aware of just how much a Ref or in this case a MIB can indeed influence a game?
I take your point as to how poorly the team played earlier in the season at Mordor, however, if you see a ball that is a 50/50 you would fancy your chances, however when you know that almost certainly regardless of how you win the ball, a foul will be given against you and possibly a booking, it will definitely influence your decision making.

I think it was In the dark who pointed out just how frustrating a Refs decisions can be especially when it is obvious to you how biased he is being. That will obviously affect how you play.

I am now expecting the great majority of 50/50's to go their way and hope we can get an early goal to force them to have a go at us. 1-0 with 5mins to go will not be enough.

Be interesting to compare how our "first tackle" and theirs are interpreted by Dougal.

Hope the Bhoys In the Broomloan are in fine voice (as usual) as I have a feeling the team will need all the backing they can get!

    HAIL! HAIL!

My money will be on him picking on Brown and McGeady on Saturday. Will there be any point on turning up on Saturday with this referee in charge?

Apart from Dougal if there was anybody else Walter could have hand picked it would have been McCurry. Seems Walter may have been on the phone to his good friend Don McVicar.

Dougal should never have been given a game of this importance given his past history with Celtic. Over to you John Reid and Lawwell. The campaign against our club is growing.

If we want to triumph in this fixture we will, if we are going to worry about the ref and the opponents we won't.

We will be kicked all over the park and if we retaliate we will be punished.

Considering this is the dirtiest rangers team for years I cannot believe the lack of bookings they have had.

Maybe John Reid is keeping his powder dry until the end of the season to see how things pan out, but I would say there is open cheating and manipulation of results by match officials being carried out this year and UEFA/FIFA should be handed a corruption complaint at the end of the season.

PS - I don't normally subscribe to the 'Paranoid Celtic Fan' but I can't argue with what I am seeing.

I cannot explain why this blog was jammed with comments re their lack of fighting spirit and capitulation at fod and we had nine players names in the book
I don't think Arthur C Clark could either

When we last visited the Death Star we picked up 9 bookings. We look at everything through our own green tints so to get some objectivity and context I looked for a neutral analysis.

The 'Sporting Life' carried out an on-line minute by minute analysis of what was happening the language / descriptors and the outcome for the tackles etc. should give an insight into the fairness of McCurry's performance.
Comments in quotes are from the Sporting life .
6 'McDonald appears to push keeper McGregor'... Yellow Card(missed McGregor stamp twice on McDonald- sees the retaliation, Skippy is naive)

9 Weir foul 'on O'Dea who is going to need some treatment' No action
( McCurry failed to balance the books in the "don't mess with me I'm in charge" school of refereeing Derby games.

22 Jiri 'needless challenge' on Hutton Lectured

25 Hutton 'brought to abrupt halt by Donati' Yellow Card
    ( no argument here)

31 Brown on Papac 'crude challenge' Yellow Card
    ( no argument here either)

34 off the ball clash between Thomson and Mick 'but ref takes no action' No action
    ( Hmmmmmmm!!!!!!)

42 'nasty' clash of heads Mick off No action
    ( Deliberate assault )

45+2 'Cousin gets a lecture after another aerial challenge this time on Donati' No action
( should have been carded for reckless endangerment or malicious stupidity)

48 Jiri penalised for a foul on Thomson 'decision looked a little harsh' Free to FoD
    ( that means no foul)

52 'Thomson hacks down McDonald' Free to Celtic No Action against assailant
    ( hack sounds bookable !!)

55 Kennedy 'chops down Hutton' Yellow Card
( Chop must be worse than a hack because we get another booking)

59 'McGeady hacks down McCulloch' Yellow Card
(no I was wrong, a hack is the same as a chop card no 5)

67 'McGeady and McCulloch tangle- this time the ref penalises the Celtic man' Free FoD
( tangle sounds like 6 and two 3's but must mean a 'sneaky Tim foul' )

70 'Celtic almost create an opening inside the area but ends when whistle goes' Free to FoD
( good way to stop the threat !)

71 'After slight delay ref calls Jarosik back and shows him the yellow card' Yellow Card

76 'Novo clips Snow but comes off worst' Free to Celtic No action
( Oh sh!t I haven't booked any FoD players yet - I really should have done Novo)

88 "Face off between Hutton and Naylor sparks mellee" Cards aplenty ( Hutton, McGregor, Naylor, O'Dea. Boruc)

In the scuffle of hand bags; a ref could justify booking as many or as few as he likes.

The fact that he was calculated in his actions was illustrated by the fact that he looked round the scrum and picked out the two instigators and then two further Celtic players of the 4 remaining players who had not previously been cautioned.

I have not checked the footage but Brown, McGeady , Skippy, Donati, Jarosik, and Kennedy can't all have been any more innocent than O'Dea and Artur.
However McCurry knew that to give them a card would mean a red.
To me this shows the level of cheating that occurred.

If the game had been refereed fairly I believe the bookings would have been as follows
1 McDonald McGeady Kennedy would have been lectured
2 Brown, Donati, Cousin McCulloch would all have been booked.
3 The end of show handbags would have resulted in a lecture from the ref who would tell them all to grow up.

    The man is a cheat.

Expect more of the same on saturday

In fifty odd years of following and watching Celtic I cannot ever remember us getting a fair crack of the whip on more than a handful of occasions.

For nearly all of my life we have complained about referees.

The only times we did not moan about referees were during the Jock Stein era and the Martin O'Neil years.

Why was that?, were the referees pro Celtic during those 15 odd years, most certainly they were not.

We had no need to complain about them, we were simply better than our opponents and the referees could do nothing about it.

On Saturday if Gordon plays a team fitted to our strenghts then we will win.

It is in our hands, we are more than capable, our opponents may be hard to beat, they may be defensive, they may be tough as nails, but they have always lost out to teams who passed the ball, played football on the ground and run at them at speed.

As someone already has said, "TAKE THE REFEREE OUT OF THE EQUATION ON SATURDAY AND WE WILL WIN".

    PLAY THE RIGHT PLAYERS,

    PLAY FOOTBALL AND

    VICTORY WILL BE OURS.

    STAND UP FOR VICTORY,

    Martin

    Boruc

    Hinkel
    McManus
    Caldwell
    Naylor

    McGeady
    Brown
    Dunno
    Dunno

    JVOH
    Samaras

Referee Dougal will have a trick or two up his sleeve. Unless we get a 2 goal lead, quickly it isn't going to happen.

When was the last time we scored in the first 5 mins? First 10? Can anyone remember.

The cards are stacked high against us, even more so now, GS can either play or be the Joker. Get Hutch on! Get Bobo back and put Caldwell in the middle!

Looking forward to the game, I think we all know what we'll be up against, the less-than-inspiring 4-5-1 so favoured by Smith.

Looking back at previous SPL games we've played this season, I think it's imperative that we match them up with the same formation, for the first half at least. We've been overun in midfield by lesser teams than ourselves and indeed Rangers this season, and often without the confidence (or speed) to play a slick passing game to cut such opponents apart, many such games being saved in the last 5 minutes or so.

    For me, five in midfield to take control of the game is a must, though perhaps we could throw their so-called tactical genius with a line-up like below;

    -------------Samaras---------------

    Robson--Sno--Naka--Hartley--McGeady

    Naylor--McManus---Caldwell---Hinkel

    --------------Boruc----------------

I hear supposedly neutral Players union representative Fraser Wishart was spouting about allowing rfc to extend there season.
This guy is supposed to represent the best interest of ALL players of ALL clubs.
Not just the establishment club's interests.
Another high ranking officer in a position of influence along side G Smith.
Comments like this will expose this guy and make his position as untennable as Smith's should be for pandering to the best interests of the establishment team in Scotland squad selections and turning blind eyes to the mass withdrawals.

With his past history of vindictive harassment of Celtic Minded redheads,
    captains and managers-

and being proved a liar as he tried to get Neil Lennon a 10 game suspension-

the huns must be very worried to go to such depths in picking such a blatantly anti-Celtic official.

This season ,the SPL and their cheating cohorts at the SFA have made Scottish Football a laughing stock.

    mncelt,

Added to your players I` would have Robson and Hartley.

I tend to agree with Tosh, I think Gordon will start with Scot ans Jan, although I would prefer your pairing.

If a player is AN IMPACT PLAYER, then let him make his impact at the start of the game, to win the game, rather than later, to save the game.

The most successful midfield players in the last three years in Scotland are now wearing green and white.

Hartley could run from box to box all game long, now because of an international, he is a holding midfielder.

He was signed as a box to box player, let ho=im play to his strenghts.

Robson is the other outstanding midfielder, he has however to find his niche in our setup.

    ON TO VICTORY,

    Martin

Re: Appointment of Ref’s for Hun games at Mordor.

Cast yer mind back 4 years, 1st game of the season there, Celtic player sent off (or was it 2), Huns win.

Now, 2 years ago, 1st game there, Celtic player sent off, Huns win.

I’m sure it also happened 6 years ago as well but can’t remember!

Now can you see a plan?

Can you also remember Duffield was getting pelters on here for his anti-Catholic comments in some hun book just prior to this season’s 1st game there?

What happens? And, I predicted it. He appoints a CoS Minister to ref the game. Ironic, don’t think so.

But what happened at that game broke the mould from the previous 1st games there. Instead of sending off a Celtic player he decided to be even more cunning, book 5 before half-time (3 midfielders) and render them practically ineffective. Worked a treat.

Now this Saturday’s game (second in a row there) and who do they appoint? A guy who has already been embarrassed by Gordon Strachan this season and Neil Lennon before. Ironic, don’t think so.

And guess what? I predicted Dougal would be the ref this Saturday.

    Ironic eh?

Calton- 4 years ago- that was the infamous Lovenkrands/Thomson game where Sutton also got red carded- K. Clark (this was also the game where MON/Neil Lennon showed their solidarity at the end to the support under such oppression- which you may recall they where roundly condemned by all and sundry in the media "could have caused a riot"). Ironically this is one of my most cherished moments as a Celtic supporter.

2 years ago S Dougal and the Lennon red card at the end.

    McCurry 9 bookings.
Last year the no penalty for Neil Lennon.
    Further back Jorge Cadete

Can anyone tell me when was the last time we ever got a "break" at that god-forsaken place?

I rely on Bhoy for my information on referees. He thinks that we have had Dougal once only this season against Motherwell. Scott scored a hat trick (including a penalty)but got booked for diving too. He was supposed to referee against Falkirk but called off (Underhill took over).

My abiding memory of Dougal is his sending off of Alan Thomson at Ipox...any bets on him doing the same if a hun perpetrates a tackle like that?

    That’s true, dreadful isn’t it?

Unfortunately we haven’t got that inbuilt belief those teams had. Those teams were at times truly difficult to beat, and usually won the game before a ball was kicked. To win against them the opposition really had to be on song or the Mib gave them a helping hand, or we had an off day, but that was merely a blip, and didn’t affect the team’s performance.
The recent games we have had to witness means we will have to call on a different kind of belief – namely that we ARE better than they, which is what we believe. Celtic now have the opportunity of showing us this, of showing us they can skelp this team of lucky hammer-throwers. We are not being treated with fairness and this should sting us into show them that cheats don’t win (well not on this particular Saturday).
Looking forwards to it. Standing as I type :-)

    Hail Hail

Can anyone remember if the Alan Thomson 'nudge' on novo was a 1st game?

I'm amazed you weren't annoyed by Scottish referees in Big Jock's time.

It was a golden age for the MIB's.

    R.H.Davidson (Airdrie).
    J.P.R.Gordon (Newport-on-Tay).
    Tiny Wharton.
    Syme's Faither
    And on and on.

    Jock understood what he faced.

His solution was to encourage his players to score goals galore on the basis that "they can't chop them all off"
