Early signs of endeavour required against Motherwell

I really don’t want to talk about Motherwell tomorrow I just want the game underway. I want Celtic to convince me they have what it takes to win this league; that they can apply themselves for the whole 90 minutes, not cram the necessary work into the latter stages like an indulgent student.

I want to look at my watch after 10 minutes and know that attitude and application are in place to secure the points.

Curiously, this visit to Fir Park looked tricky a few weeks ago, but after the disappointment of Tuesday night I am actually feeling more confident about tomorrow. Motherwell always make our visits there difficult, even when they have had less capable talents in the dug-out that Mark McGhee, but just as a Uefa Cup spot appeared on their horizon their nerve has shaken.

Interest in team selection is perhaps greater than I have known it for a game of this stature; there are real and important choices to be made in midfield and attack. Scott McDonald has perhaps covered more ground than any other player at the club this season, as a result, his composure on the ball has gone.

Time for Samaras and Vennegoor of Hesselink to start up front. Let’s hope we are all convinced of the performance by 12:40 tomorrow.

Let's get the early goal and build a performance from there.

    McManus
    Caldwell

    Robson
    Hartley
    Brown
    McGeady

    Samaras
    JVofH

Bring the league home, use Nakamura, McDonald and Donati (alongside Brown only) in rotation and as impact players.

Bring the league home Celtic, it's got to be a famous one!

Dundee United for the Cup, it's classic sport given Eddie Thomson's brave fight.

I think Skippy will play tomorrow with the expectation that he can put in a good performance against his former paymasters.

If he plays as he did against DU then I think it should be him to make way for the other striker.

Again I would start with Samaras and I know his and Skippys styles are very similar but they have to learn to adapt to how the other one plays if both want to be at Celtic next season.

A win and a clean sheet is all I ask for.

It doesn't matter who plays upfront aslong as they are partnering JVOH. Samaras and McDonald will never work because both players like to drop off and pick the ball up and also float wide. This is fine but only one should be doing this. If we had a midfielder who could actually burst through the middle, as Scott Brown was ment to do then the combination of McDonald and Samaras could possibly work. But it hasn't due to the ineffectiveness of Brown and Co. playing in centre midfield. Now I can see this and so can many others, the solution is to play JVOH with either of them and sort out the centre midfield. But Strachan can't, its worrying to see how tacticly naive he his, especially when trying to the win the game. But he has another chance on Saturday to sort it all out and I'm sure he will.

As a foot note and I know this might sound daft to many but I have been really impressed with Gary Caldwell of late, does anybody know how long my opinion of him will stay like this? I hope its at least until the end of the season!

Well and truly hacked off this morning!

Just dragged myself from bed and in the absence of the Slabbery Wummin who thinks that Daughter Number 2’s impending** production of a new member of the Celtic intelligentsia is more important than my breakfast, I located the toaster (by a process of elimination based on what device seemed the best fit for two slices of somerfield’s freshly defrosted bread), when I noticed on the wrapper it said ‘Thick’!!

Now, I remember what thick bread was like!

We called it things like doorstep, or halfaloaf, or brick, or mattress.

Now it is more like a ryvita! You could play a round of three-card brag with a loaf now!

So the question is ‘Is thin the new thick’ and do we need a European standard for the term thick?

Perhaps it just means that if you ask it a simple question, it doesn’t know the answer or even reply!! Like your common or garden hun!

And if anyone finds the term ‘hun’ sectarian, insulting, or divisive then I suggest the following article written by an avowed member of the species!

Why this hun's on the run!

Time for pub and more deep thinking!

    Hail Hail

    Estadio

**Impending means – due on 28th March – one day before game at the Govan slagheap! Imagine the scene. Estadio down in darkest Wales, engine running, ready for fast getaway, shovelling a chicken Ceylon down Daughter’s throat to ensure that I get back in time for game!! In the event of any delay to the appearance of the next Jinky, I have informed them that the birth should be at home as the hospital does not have Setanta!

I did suggest that she comes up to Scotland to make my arrangements a bit more practical but for some reason, the Slabbery Wummin felt that I was being a tad unfeeling!

I pointed out to her that whenever I referred to her on CQN, I always had the savoir-faire and gentility to give her name capital letters.

    Strange creatures these women people!!

At Celtic Park the other night we played not 2 badly, created several good chances but managed 2 drop 2 points, just when we could be doing without that. We can't even blame Mcurry this time, infact he favoured the hoops with a couple of decisions, no booking 4 Samaras and no handball in box against Robson.
I felt that the crowd could have done more 2 inspire the players, mostly we just sat there watching the game unfold feeling a bit p'd off that we could not beat Dundee Utd on the night. In fact I really could not understand why the crowd were not more up 4 it, it is the closest title race in years and Rangers are rightly favourites at the minute. What more do we need before we create some atmosphere?
All is not lost, we have 10 games left 2 turn it around. Time 4 some leadership from the management, the board and the players.
We the fans will always b there 4 the team, whether it's 1000 of us or 67,000 of us. We all want the same thing, is anyone going to get their finger out and make sure we get it?
Going to the game 2moro with my buddy, nervous already.

I get slightly perturbed when I read our Captain's quotes in the newspapers this week - 'no more slip ups', 'every game a cup-final', 'no room for error' etc, that type of stuff.

It reminds of the speil Barry Ferguson was coming out with when we were winning the league by a country mile the last few seasons.

Sure enough, Rangers would up their game for a couple of weeks, a few good performances would follow, but then a draw or a defeat would increase our lead yet further.

Every point we drop heaps added pressure on the next game, at the same time lessening the pressure for Rangers. And kicking off the 2nd half of a game at 0-0 cranks up the pressure yet again.

Celtic should really go for it in all but the OF games, and try and get an early goal and a first half lead, otherwise I think more points could be dropped for the run-in.

I've got every confidence in Gordon to get the defence right, even the forwards, he's done not bad so far, but he needs a wee hand with the midfield…..

Scott Brown, absolute last chance Scott, let us down here and be prepared for a very very long rest, he starts

Paul Hartley, a seasoned pro, dependable, what you see is what you get, he starts,

Evander Sno, definitely has the potential, but given our current predicament we need more than that, bench contender

Massimo Donati, same comments as for Evander

Brian Robson, he was heading for player of the year until he joined us, sorry Gordon your over ruled, he starts

Aiden McGeady, doesn’t need any words from me to justify his inclusion, he starts.

S Nakamura, I love the guy but Fir park is not the place for Naka, subs bench

This is it ghuys, last chance saloon, 8 lives all used up, anything other than 3 points tomorrow will be a big big test of our support.

I have noticed a few others on here also having a go at our captain for making comments to the media and for want of a better term being "rent-a-quote".

I'm not having a go at you because I can see you are more concerned about what he is saying rather than the fact that he is saying it.

Most (if not all) of the stuff attributed to Mick in the newspapers is originally published in the Celtic View or given in an interview on Celtic TV and simply reguritated in the media (often making claims which bear little resemblance to the actual quotes).

I understand you would rather he wouldn't heap pressure on his team mates by saying that we need to win all the rest of the games, but the simple fact is that we do and IMHO he is right to bring this up and I would hope that in private he and the manager are hammering home this to the players.

The pub is on the left hand side of the road, near the wee mini roundabout. Was a Celtic pub the last time I was in there.

Estadio, great news on the impending birth, take care of all, as I am sure you will. Don’t fret if the baby is a day overdue, being born the day we go ‘there’ is a good omen.

Mike, I will be using Movable Type, which is a product I will host myself, not something you register with, like Blogger. There are a few options I am looking at for registration at the moment, no decision on that front yet.

    Bigtrainpete, aye.

    DBBIA, good news, we hope.

Bieniex, predictable news, or so CQN’s man in the city reported.

According to the evening Times. Donati is suspended for tomorrow's game, so that sorts that one out.

Also, both Scotts are one game away from a three agme ban. If either is booked tomorrow the ban would start on 29 March!

All eyes on Dougie McDonald tomorrow.

    Dick Byrne,

you're most welcome, my friend. Shall pass on the thanks to the young people.

The most recent game that I've been able to watch, on TV, was the ICT game in which the team looked inspired for 70 mins and then terrifed (after the o.g.)for the remainder. And at the most recent game that I got to at CP, I said to my neighbour (one Martin 42 of that ilk) that they looked as if they didn't really trust each other.

What I'm not saying is that they're poor players.

Let me just say with a wee bit of bias..

Sporting will beat Rangers home AND away.

They have been a bit inconsistent this season but they have a good side, Veloso will move to Manure at the end of this season im sure for at least 15 million, Liedson is a cracking striker who will score in Glasgow and Lisbon, and they wear the hoops. Might even go as i did when the mighty Maritimo beat them 1 0 in what was nearly McLeish's alamo.

From "Cuba, An Economic Paradox" Professor Alejandro Blanco 2008

Cuba's nationalised industry accounts for approximately 35% of GDP....light industry comprises textiles, shoes, soap, toothpaste, and corrugated cardboard boxes. Recently, Cuba has become the second largest producers in the world of toasters (2 slice and 4 slice models) and this contributes greatly to its exports along with cigars, sugar and Ry Cooder's backing bands. In the mid-1990s, tourism surpassed sugar processing as the main source of foreign exchange as foreigners took advantage of the keenly priced revolutionary "Pan Bronceado" literally bronzed bread. Recently, there have been reports that Fidel's last mandate was to ban toaster until 2010 but these have been dismissed as "lazy journalism"

    Re our forward permutations...

Scott McDonald has been selected for Australia's friendly against Singapore 22nd March and the world cup qualifier against China 26th March both games are in Asia, I don't think he will fly out till after the 'Gretna' game on the 23rd, The china game will be about midday wed 26th your time...

He would then fly back Thursday for a midday kick off at the thunderdome...on the SAT...

He pulled up good after the Qatar game... Though i think it caught up with him later re Form dip?...

Plus the China games at altitude for any the Athletes out there...

Anyway hope that helps all you Coaches...

No I was only enjoying it as a sporting spectacle, I had in a accumulator that was going nowhere.

Good news about Shannon Matthews, it might be the wrong time to say it, but I was disturb about the lack of media concern and coverage over Shannon's disappearance compared to poor Maddy's disappearance. I feel it is another example that the class system is alive and well in the U.K. as Shannon came from a large family that lived on a estate.

Lets hope that Maddy returns safely back to her family too.

Just a thought looking back at one of Estadio's earlier posts.

Its not so much that the term Hun is offensive, it’s more the manner in which its used that causes the offence.

If you say something in a hostile derogatory manner, it really doesn't matter what you say, it’s the intent,

If you put an evil snarl on your face and called call someone a dirty rotten low down bun, they would be just as offended if you had called them hun instead of bun,

Alternatively, if you were to put a smile on your face and say to someone you’re a right hun mate aren't you, chances are they would smile along with you,

Mind you, if it were a dirty big bruiser of a guy with no sense of humour, probably better of saying nothing,

I know this is all a load of rubbish but what the heck, its Friday afternoon and I'll be in the pub shortly.

Am I being cynical that Shannon is one of seven children living on a housing estate had anything to do with the lack of media coverage.

At the risk of insulting the fine journalists that frequent this fine blog but the profession of the journalist is down there with Politicians, Used-Car Salesman and parking wardens.

Hope I have not offended too many bloggers on this site that might work in these professions

I see Rangers are at Tannadice on the Sunday in between their UEFA Cup games. Now that's a toughie. Especially if we were to have won at Ibrox just before the 1st leg. I don't mind admitting my faith has been shaken but it's still very much all to play for.

Any' new' Gretna would have to start off at the bottom of the English pyramid, and work there way up through all 20 promotions to reach the Pinnacle

Alternatively they could apply to join the South of Scotland League, or the Est of Scotland League, who are Seniors but playing at a lower level than Juniors.

It would be great to revive the name of Solway Star FC, who disbanded in 1942.

TNT, not cynical at all. What other reason could there be for the difference in coverage? It is as though the thought process was "A child is missing. Let's do a family background check before we decide on our reaction." It reminds me of the pretty awful press reporting of Peter Sutcliffe's victims or the strong push to differentiate in the 80s between gay AIDS victims and somebody in Arthur Ashe's situation, for example.

Sadly, I think my wife's response is a perfect example of the effect of the media coverage. On this site, we like to ponder on, even proclaim, the death of the old media. Away from Scottish football, we haven't even laid a glove on it.

I think Yoker Athletic should replace Gretna in the league, they have a modern stadium in that quaint little fishing village by the banks of the Clyde. Holm Park

And I am sure those that frequent Babbitys would enjoy drinking at the Cawdor or the Lovatt before the game when Celtic plays there.
