Fixture precedent for SPL, Part II

As well as the fixture congestion we discussed yesterday from 1971, Celtic also suffered in 1974 when they were forced them to play and incredible three games in four days.

After returning home from a European Cup semi final in Madrid on Thursday 25 April, Celtic played league games against Falkirk on Saturday 27 April, Aberdeen on Monday, 29 April and Morton the next day, Tuesday 30 April. They won the league, their ninth in succession, by four points from Hibernian.

Celtic finished that week at Hampden, with another Scottish Cup win.

Is it only Celtic who can be asked to play three games in four days on the back of a European semi final? I would hope not. Rangers must accept whatever fixture burden their success thrusts upon them and the SPL must show no partiality (which could determine the destination of the league) in arranging fixtures.

The only problem being is that the SPL & the SFA aren't particularly known for impartiality.

34 years ago, in a league run by another organisation? I can't see the SPL regarding that as a compelling precedent.

I think the 'extend or not' debate is a side issue, if indeed it is an option given Euro 08 starting early in June. It's likely that Rangers will drop points in their remaining fixtures against other SPL clubs, irrespective the scheduling of their fixtures - so it's very much in our own hands.

If we win our next two league games, we will be firm favourites to go on to 3 in a row. If we don't achieve that, we may be reduced to hoping the SPL helps us out - but there should be no need for that. I prefer not to think in those terms until its absolutely necessary to do so.

Things will then look very different.

    Hi all

very infrequent lurker/poster...love the site whenever i can!!

lets not kid ourselves here - i am of an age that has seen decision after decision in favour of the fod...we all know what will happen here if moonbeam boy and his lackies apply pressure on the "rangers family" (media included).

Peter Lawwell has correctly issued a pre-emptive - but what recourse would be available should the powers that be behave in the way past experience dictates that they will?

All this fixture congestion etc will become academic for Rangers if they beat us next week. That would-assuming both teams win this weekend- put them well clear and they could start using squad players for the SPL knowing they have a nice margin and resting players for the bigger games.

First post for a while, though reading the blog regularly.

The Herald article at the end of the last post- a bit of poetic license in the first line- the old Board never stretched to provide a clock at CP in 1979. What a night though, still my best ever Celtic match.

Picked up a ticket for Gretna yesterday at the ticket office- if anyone is interested (or their finances stretch that far)- Celtic are still offering hospitality places for the game next week at Ibrox.
Pre and post match hospitality & entertainment at the Kerrydale Suite, coach transfers etc. £155 a skull. Not sure if this offer is open to non season ticket holders.
I have used this 3 times in the past (er-customer entertaining), each time we got gubbed and the post match atmosphere at KS was funereal- one of these days!!!

Got to say I am tempted to get among the green at Ibrox today as I think Mixu & Hibs will be straining at the leash to get at them. I will be absolutely gutted if they do not get anything, but I am sure they will. What a lift this will give us for tomorrow and next week.

Re SSM getting his pre-emptive strike in- to use old chess analogy- zugzwang- all Murray's pieces have been hemmed in (including his media pawns), the files and diagonals have been closed down and anything he does will weaken his position. Your move Sir David!

    STANDING UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS!

I agree with Paul67. Ranger’s fixture congestion is merely a consequence of their relative success. Lyon thought the cancellation of a SPL fixture prior to their game against Rangers a joke; as did the rest of Europe. It was a decision from the book of administrative farce. (I personally think, in its stupidity, it might not have been such a bad decision for us)

The SPL have set a precedent that they cannot, with any integrity, ever decline any other club that requests a similar postponement. (I just fell of my own chair laughing after typing that)

The Fawlty Towers that is the SPL cannot possibly be seen to favour any one team more so than it has already done so. To do so would elevate Rangers to a League and a Law to themselves. Above and beyond that which they presently enjoy.

But do you know what?... they, i.e. him, (GS) are more than capable of taking our country’s league to the gutter to ensure that there will only be one winner of this years championship.

In 2008, are they going to be allowed to get away with it?

Cue John Reid… come on John, you’re up. It’s your time. Earn the right of title ‘Chairman” of Celtic Football Club.

I think their main gambit is the European dimension - co-efficient point accrual for 'the greater good of Scottish fitba' so therefore Scottish fitba should help them out. All the more important then that Sporting Lisbon give them a severe behooping so they can't use this tactic.

Still recovering from Barcelona and aftermath. One goal in four games without a victory.

On the subject of "postponements", I vaguely remember a match against Rangers scheduled to be played at Hampden (in the 1970s) on the Saturday following a Rangers European Thursday match, which was postponed due to a vicious bout of 'flu afflicting all at Snake Mountain.

Miraculously, this epidemic was confined to the Snake Mountain vicinity and cleared up almost as quickly as it struck.

Balde (see sense WGS before its too late)
    McManus
    Naylor
    Wilson (right midfield role)
    Hartley (holding)
    Brown
    Robson (left midfield role)
    McGeady (right through the middle)
    Samaras (more running power)

They wont have the pace to cope with the front 2 and McGeady wont be allowed to be crowded out. Play this team and we will win. PLAYING THE GLASGOW CELTIC WAY

i think if we lose at ibrox the league will be over. It would have them 6 clear with a game in hand (ataying with my previous assumption both teams win this weekend). It would be a hammer blow to our confidence and will give Rangers a massive boost. I would then fancy Rangers to get 1/6 points in our home games.

Think back 2003. UEFA cup run when the Manky mob refused to put a game back by 1 day. Yes 1 day. What happened? Good guess? We were refused permision by the SPL and the manky mob.

Well done Celtic and the SSM for taking this stance so soon. This is the type of thing that Celtic PLC are not usually very good at as the norm is to wallow in silence. I did not expect a word from them as they do not usually put their head above the pulpit.

  • At 22/03/08 10:17, Blogger Serenity said…

The sphell will not make a decision on this until after the game at Ibrox, if they win (Ghord forbid) it wont matter as they will be willing to play anywhere, anytime. On the other hand if we win, that will force their hand and we might see an extension mooted! It will be very interesting to see how this pans out and what we as a club do about it, if it happens. Personally I don't think that anyone could stop them unless several other clubs are opposed.

So the sphell bail out Gretna with cash which in turn allows them to field a stronger team against Celtic.

I wonder if they would have done so if Gretnas next game was against the sooth side billy boys?.

The sphell are considering an extension but are clearly keeping their opions open, waiting to see how things pan out. Winning the title will be even more sweeter should the cards fall our way. I do hope the hibees pump them this afternoon. Waltie offering out the hibees bench would be a grand sight. I do however expect the odd dodgy decision and obligatory penalty to go in favour of our beloved neighbours In addition tackles akin to the five nations for all to see will be the fayre of the day. Newsletter, I think the material on the Celtic web site is under copyright; however, I don’t think Celtic should confuse the message with the media outlet.

The message from PL is the most important thing, as it will be for most/many news items that appear on the official web site. It should be a resource for journos to dip into and pick up a “lazy” story.

This is an accepted practice in the media, Celtic understand how it works and I’m sure this article was designed as a ‘seed’ (very sure).

In 1962/63 no games were played in Scotland for two months (Jan/Feb) but the league managed to wrap up (!) by mid May.

    Celtic played on 27th April,29th April,May 4th (drawn cup final)6th May,,11th May,13th May,18th May(replayed cup final)

Interestingly the previous Feb a proposition to switch to a March-Nov season was rejected.I`m told the proposal "would have had greater support but for the bitter(surely not !) opposition of powerful Rangers".

For those making game tomorrow, this song would lift the spirits!!
For those who are in love
    There's a song that's warm and tender.
    For those who are oppressed
    In song you can protest.
    So liberate your minds
    And give your soul expression.
    Open up your hearts,
I'll sing for you this song.

Let the people sing their stories and their songs
And the music of their native land
Their lullabies and battlecries and songs of hope and joy
So join us hand in hand
    All across this ancient land
    Throughout the test of time
It was music that kept their spirits free
Those songs of yours and of mine

It was back in ancient times,
The bard would tell his stories
Of the heroes, of the villain,
Of the chieftains in the glen.
    Through Elizabethian time
    And Cromwellian war and fury
Put our pipers to the sword,
Killed our harpers and our bards.

Let the people sing their stories and their songs
And the music of their native land
Their lullabies and battlecries and songs of hope and joy
So join us hand in hand
    All across this ancient land
    Throughout the test of time
It was music that kept their spirits free
Those songs of yours and of mine

    Ireland, land of song,
    Your music lives forever
In its valleys, in its mountains,
In its hills and in its glens.
    Our music did survive
    Through famine and oppression.
    To the generations gone,
I'll sing for you this song.

Its annoying that we all know ex players and the like need to do an apprenticeship of celtic bashing, in the media.
And a lot actually continue it after the apprenticeship... because they find that they are quite good at it...in a FOD kind of way.

    But....

As someone that I knew for quite a while it is VERY dissapointing to hear Des do the same.
I used to train twice a week with him in glasgow (when he played for QOS). There were quite a few lads in the Glasgow area that played for them at the time and the club felt it better to meet up in glasgow and do thier own training. And I can tell you all he was a MASSIVE celtic man. MASSIVE.
As was Tommy Bryce (ex killie player). There was George Rowe (team cpt) and David Lillie (killie defender) who were massive rangers fans, but the banter was always good.
This was during watties first reign.
The Blue side of the team were always very vocal.
But Des was an ex celtic reserve team player, and at one point was close to the 1st team. Celtic is in his blood.
But i am led to believe that his bashing of celtic has become more and more severe, with alarming regularity!

    Very dissapointing.

on another point from the same time period -

Maybe it was a sign of the times, that even when we were not winning things... celtic fans were united. We were one. We all backed the team with a ferosious gusto....
which is sadly lacking now, except in the away games. And i believe it IS effecting the team.
At the end of last month the big thing was that we had sooo many big games and only one home one.
Ironicly enough, the only time we dropped points in the league was at home. And away from home we came back from behind, and came through several tough games. No co-incidence.

Maybe it aint such a big thing that there is a celtic fan in the papers bashing celtic so voiciferously..... there are plenty on here and in the stnds doind it all the time.

think i have just depressed myself with this realisation...

I think its significant that Peter Lawell felt compelled to address the extension issue. He knows, as well as the rest of us, that it must have been touted as an option within certain footballing corridors. What Peter is doing is securing the horse before it considers bolting.

Good management skills - addressing an issue before it becomes a problem.

I believe that Rangers did try to get the Thistle replay played this week, but the police objected.

In the old days, replays were always held on the Tue/ Wed immediately following a weekend game. But now the practive is to wait a wek to allow preparation time.

Euro 2008 kicks off early in June. Does anyone know when squads will be assembling? I would assume late May, which would be another argument against extension.
