Grenta 0-3 Celtic

A route-one goal from Scott McDonald, a header from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and shot from Giorgios Samaras secured the points against Gretna after another particularly poor passing performance by the champions.

Such are the problems at Gretna that their starting 11 had scored only 7 goals between them for the club and goalkeeper Fleming had never kept a clean sheet, but the anticipated onslaught never materialised; Celtic only forced Fleming into two saves before McDonald’s 42 minutes opener.

Giorgios Samaras replaced Scott McDonald after 62 minutes and gave Celtic a focus previously missing. He held the ball, opened up play, made runs and even when he lost the ball, he chased and harried, and made life difficult for Gretna, and perhaps stopped me from concluding, “worst Celtic performance in a long time” in this match report.

He looked like someone playing for a contract.

Scott Brown was booked for this third foul of the game, his 13th league booking in total this season, which will bring a three match ban starting against Motherwell on 5 April.

The second half was an improvement on the first, but Gordon Strachan must be concerned at how prepared his team is for the challenge ahead.

Why dont we harrie players when we lose possession, why dont we put goal keepers under pressure? We seem content to play a slow game of football. And today we seemed to be content with a 2-0 lead ! On 85 mins or so, Naylor happy to let the ball out for a shy and saunters to collect the ball.

There seems to be a real lack of desire or an atittide of complacency. I don't like what I am seeing from this team at the minute.

    FT Gretna 0-3 Celtic

Quite amazing how our game changed when Samaras came on. His movement is exceptional and he is able to link the midfield and forward play in a way Skippy can't.

A good problem for WGS to have with all our forwards scoring goals. If we can just get the midfield going now we can get back into the challenge for the league.

Now for the big one next week. It has been a long time coming. Would have preferred to play them at home before we went to Ipox but the bhoys know what they have to do.

Good second half performance today. Well done Bhoys.

    I'm off to shovel snow.

Another away clean sheet. The defence dealt comfortable with high balls, hopefully it is the same next week as well as the score the same.

Samaras and JVoH were our top players with Aiden getting stronger as the game continued on.

More importantly 3 points and an improved goal average.

Surely Sammy has staked his claim for a start? Midfield is a big worry for next week, but there should be no need for motivation for this one.

Good result in the end but a worse performance overall than Aberdeen game (except finishing, of course!)

Gretna's first substitution seemed to have made a big difference today. The original rb was playing pretty well against Aiden but he was moved forward. Barr came on, looks more like a centre half, and Aiden then set up two goals.

Like others I would drop Naka next week and play Aiden right with Barry Robson left. They will get joy against the Rangers full backs. Add in Sami taking tthe CBs deep and we have a winning formation.

    Sir Paul

    Your summation said it all.

Could not have said it bettah, myself.

Aiden was my man of the Match.

Naka, as we all know, will not be playing at Ibrox.
Should we switch Aiden,to the right wing... and Go with Robson or.... perish the thought, Riorden, on the left?

    Stranger things have not happened.

Samaras ...is he only an Impact Player?

I have not made up my mind on that one!

Samaras changed the game, today...no question.

I do not envy, Gordon's selection task, for next week's game.

The only player that I am confident of, is Arthur.

Herr Hinkel..is turning out to be a trifle slower, that I would like, in a Full back...

Mebbbe, we have still not found the one, that we think that we have.

Honestly, I was very impressed with the attacking play and all round eager attitude... which, is really what I wish to see in an attacking Full Back...of young Caddis.
In last game I saw him in, against the G.A. reserves...his crossing was particular effective...

Anyway.... I is a cinch that we still have a long way to go, before we will see what we waht to see.

    What is that?

If you don't know....then I am not gonna tell ya!

Pleased, and a lot happier, than I was last week...

    Next week?....

Would not be at all surprised, if we, SURPRISED!

    Awful, Awful, Awful, Awful, Awful.

No redeeming features from that game whatsoever. If I were a hun I would be salivating at the prospect of facing our lot next week and would be unconcerned with visiting Celtic Park either.

Predictably, the manager refused to start with Samaras and JVOH as we all called for. Look at the difference when he came on. I’m afraid the chant ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ immediately runs through my mind.

The sooner this season is over the better. A retooling job and a fresh start is called for and please none of this team 4 nonsense.

I’m now firmly in the Tinytim camp and believe that regardless of the outcome of the season (it will be a Rangers win and probably a treble in my opinion) the club needs to be re-energised by a new leader.

I am grateful for what WGS has done but it’s no longer working and I would not be willing to trust him with more transfer funds.

If action to re-energise is not taken we will be playing in a half empty stadium with all the dire financial consequences that entails.

Start planning for next season Messrs Lawell and Reid.

There was a wee bit of a discussion earlier on about the huns choosing who should go tae Lisbon as they can't trust their marauding support. The last time they did something similar was in an empty San Siro and moonbeam promised an investigation into the sectarian singing that could be audibly heard.

Did this occur or is it like cardigangate, conveniently hoovered under the carpet.

God help the Portugese when that mob descends on their city.

Today we were ontae a hiding fae nothing, it's over, we have the points and they must be feeling the pressure as we hang on in there, mince or no.

As for next week that will take care of itself and I'm quite happy going there as underdogs, that's when we're at our best.

They're much vaunted defence has conceded the same as ours and our misfiring attack have actually scored more goals away fae hame than at CP.

I'm going for 0-2 tae the good ghuys.

This season will be extended, I have no doubt there, and yet this midweek we have a useless friendly when missed games could have been played.

The only consolation for us is that fringe players like Hartley and Robson can get a run out.

I noticed that molly weir has been rested I wonder if the same courtesy will be given tae unchristian dailly and there's nae chance bammy will appear fae the bench, in fact looking at the squad I'd be surprised if any huns appear while Skoosh, Gary Caldwell and big Mick could also feature at some point.

I've read a few comments on here today re our slow play. I think the more time we have on the ball the slower our play becomes. Which means games like today we are very slow whereas in CL home games we are much quicker. Hopefully Rangers can force us to play quicker.

Another factor I think in our slow play is that the players, in midfield particularly, are too far apart from one another. Normally they are about 15 yards apart which results in a slow pass of this distance. To compound it these passes tend to be to the feet of the stationary receiving player. There are very few passes that players run on to.

Today it was only towards the end of the game that there was any close interchance of passes between the players. I would think quick interchange of passes is the way to beat Rangers.

My auld Dad, when I spoke to him after the game, which he hadn't seen, suggested it was a case of 3 going on 10. I suggested 5, at which he laughed. I didn't have the heart to say what I really felt. We were very, very poor, especially the 2 Scotts. Today did little to enthuse me for next week. In fact, I thought Aiden McGeady looked thoroughly exhausted for the last 15 minutes, very worrying, if true. there were very few real positives to take from today, apart from the skill shown in putting the ball in the net. Each was a lovely bit of football.

So, let's hope we improve out of all recognition next Sunday and the ref gives us a fair crack of the whip...

I'll take more of the same old same old from WGS if he delivers the title at the end of the season. Same as last season. Same as the season before.

If,and I accept it's a big if, but if we win three in a row does anyone seriously believe that we can realistically attract a manager who would improve on 3 in a row, two Scottish Cups and two CL last 16's in three seasons - with the relatively scarce resources that Strachan's had? Who is this Manager?

The team aren't playing well - accepted. Do I wish with all my heart that we were steamrollering teams week in week out and with flair? Of course I do. Am I already nervous about next week? Too right I am. But WHO will come to Celtic, work within the resource constraints he would have and improve on what Strachan's achieved?

I sincerely believe the least bad option is to let WGS persevere with the young guys he has brought to the club - let him improve the two Browns, Aiden, Sno, Donati, Samaras etc etc.

I'LL BE STANDING UP FOR CELTIC FOREVER - CHAMPIONS OR NOT.

    To make myself perfectly clear.

When I wrote, earlier, that in my mind, there remains a question as to if Samaras was an Impact Player, or not....

I should have explained that by an Impact Player I meant a Player who is NEVER used as a STARTER... strictly only to be used as a Player who would appear later on in the game... to...Well... make an Impact!

    So I repeat.

I do not know,to tell you the truth, if it would be wise to START. Samaras at Ibrox.

Maybe, to appear as an Impact Player, is his BEST ROLE.

    We shall see.

    As an afterthought....

At this stage of his young career....

I BELIEVE THAT SNO is DEFINITELY Best suited to be used ONLY, as AN IMPACT PLAYER...
So I would not dream of giving him a STARTING ROLE at Ibrox.

We have players who make the difference Aiden's cross for the second today was sublime.

I hope and believe that we will be up for Ibrox.

x - you throwin the towel in already? thats the only awful awful awful awful point here imo

All of our strikers score today away from home.

    Another clean sheet

This team is inconsistent due to its youthful inexperience but they have showed they can do it on bigger stages than Ibrox. (last two seasons champ league results were not luck) If we pull off a result next week the confidence we will get will catapult us to the title!

thats my mindset - we are young underdogs and will thrive on it.

    keep the faith

I've backed every Celtic manager in my lifetime even Lou Macari who I couldnae fathom why we took back fae low league Stoke, he was a failure at West Ham and yet we took him even though he held us hostage with his entourage.

I recall kneeling in St Kessogs the day after losing tae the huns tae an alfie conn last minute heider as he out jumped a struggling Daie Hay who had injured his ankle earlier on.

One of the parishioners in front of me had the Sunday papers on the seat and the headline was Macari wanting tae leave.

Lots of rumours about why he wanted out and Jock doing as much as he could to retain him, a bit similar tae WGS and WSM.

Bob Shankly took him down to Liverpool and the headlines were Liverpool Lou, nae chance he was tapped by a previous Scotland manager and went tae Old Trafford.

Lou Macari was only interested in himself.

Celtic fhans don't like their heroes to leave and have often booed them on their return.

My ould father-in-law once told me that even Jimmy Delaney when he returned back north tae Falkirk was jeered when appearing at Parkheid, even though the club let him leave so he could have a big pay day before his time was up.

And yet I backed wee Lou when he returned even though we all knew this was a dying board's last hurrah.

I backed Jock Brown when he arrived even though I heard him when he thought he was off camera asking "how did the boys get on", not the bhoys BTW.

I'll back WGS all the way until it's mathematically impossible tae retain the title or else we win it.

Rumblings on other boards seem tae suggest that he's for the Joe the Toff this summer, snyde on Thursday had a failed Celtic Boys Club goalie and Michelle McMars Bars alleged "boyfriend" urging
him to go, and yet on the same station Andy Walker reckons he deserves another season.

He must be doing something right for this urgency by those who are not for us.

When MON arrived we were so fed up not winning that we were prepared to put up with his style as long as it brought trophies, after his only trophyless season we were delighted that he stayed and it paid off, cannae say I had the same feeling about 2005, I was glad he left.

But for all the MON supporters and WGS haters lets not forget that MON was instrumental in the wee mhan being offered the position.

The huns this season will put up with wallies negative football as long as they're winning trophies.

And it's this negative football that's driving our fhans away as every team that comes tae play us adopt the same policy, mibbees that's why we score more goals away fae hame.

Next week we are the away side and wallie will play the same formation, it will be frustrating but we have tae dig in, just like today.

    C'mon people,
It was a truly awful performance. The only redeeming features were the 3 goals and 3 points. Our build up is so slow, Aiden has started running in straight lines into the corners again, Keep it simple Aiden - you don't have to beat defenders everytime.Despite the criticism Naka is receiving I think he was the only one on the pitch who was comfortable on the ball - and he was always in a position to receive a pass.

Would like to see Mick and GC step forwatd 15 yards with the ball and play into feet but what we really lacked was urgency and movement. We are extremely easy to defend against.

As for next week I'd keep Sam as an impact sub and boot the rest of them up the arse before they go out!!

  • At 23/03/08 17:45, Blogger HHBhoy said…

Well there you go; 3 points and three goals. We have started the countdown, and all systems are going, well not all systems but they will be when we have won 3 in a row. I think, just like about all of us, that Sammy Samaras will play against the Fod, the question is from the 1st min or no? No matter, he will be there and will cause panic in their back four or back five, at least he will be a pain in their backside. Certainly come next week, Celtic will get a welcome break from frustrating football; the onus won’t be on us to try and break through a rearguard for 70 odd mins, it will be an open game of tight football, and I expect Celtic to win seeing that we have the talent (and with Sammy), the pace to pick them off.
But, back to today’s game. We were on a no-win situation and even with a 3 – 0 victory, we are not really satisfied. We have played similarly and scored nothing and gained nothing. Today we got what we wanted – 3 points and as a bonus our 3 strikers got the goals, that’s pleasing in any man’s language. Surely now it is time that we pick up our performance, and I for one am glad we have the Fod to face to help us on our improvement curve. I can’t take any more of these dour games.

    Hail Hail

I am delighted that we are in concurrence, in this important matter , regarding Celtic's Loss of Confidence...it's kith and it's kin.

On today's showing we have still got a long way to go... from re-capturing our former... swagger.

Nevertheless, today's improved performance, did earn a meagre crumb of hope, that we are at last on the road to halting our slow slide, into oblivion.

We did move up the bed a bit...just a bit, mind you...

    But, a 3-0 victory is a 3-0 victory.

Mebbe, we will surprise ourselves at Ibrox..

Last week I was so depressed and disappointed...

After today... I am feeling much bettah.

    Back from the game.

It was not very enjoyable, to be honest. Too slow in building up play in the first half but we had a few quicker attacks second half. Our crowd were quite nervous though the young ones behind the Gretna keeper's goal in the 2nd half kept up a steady stream of singing and encouragement.

We may not have given our confidence much of a boost today but we've kept our options alive. I'd be happy to see Samaras start; why can't Skippy be an impact sub?

Passable performances from McManus, Samaras and Robson today. Good effort from Aiden and Naylor. The rest can improve between now and next Saturday. The atmosphere there will be totally different. I'll take the same result though, a 0:3 away win.

I agree we were nervous today but is it really because they are a young team?

The Celtic [does that make you feel better Hoople? J ]) starting line up were all 25 or over with the exception of Brown and McGeady.

JVOH, Naka and Robson are 30 this year.

Our youngest player was Aiden who is 22 on 4 April.

I’m not sure how you categorise a team as young but 9 players 25 and over including 3 ‘veterans’ doesn’t seem to me to be young.

I wish I knew why we are so nervous (there are good players there) but I don’t think age is the strongest reason.

Terry/Kojo on Thursday I wrote a massive missive which got lost in cyber space however one of the comments was that goal scoring was all about confidence and you don't regain it sitting on the bench which is why I was delighted that all our 3 strikers scored today.

BTW what a player Didier Drogba is and to think we could have had him for nothing only for his good friend Momo tae tell him wasn't Celtic class.

Probably have got booed anyway ala big Evander.

5-day Weather forcast for the next few days on the CQN. Tonight there will be blustery winds and squalls along with a heavy shower of Mineshafters mixed with Towel Throwers, this will continue well into the afternoon tomorrow with a few Hail, Hail showers. By the late afternoon tomorrow the sun will try poke through the doom and gloom for a period of time. Improving weather forcast for Tuesday and Wednesday with only interspersing gloomy clouds. For Thursday and Friday more positive climate in the CQN with the Sunny temperature reaching a high on Friday afternoon. Next weekends weather is a bit unclear as there is storm brewing just of the coast and could come inland on Saturday. Where the storm lands is still unclear at the moment, it will either hit the east-end or the southside around 2;30pm.

Kojo i'm also with you re Samaras he looks like an impact player but the a couple of starts is not enough to know for sure.

I suspect that the decision on Samaras or McDonald for the starting berth will only be made when the reaction to traveling and playing at altitude is assesed.

Samaras playing just off the front looks like a good tool to have in the bag.

I hope the players get a team talk that stirs the soul.

They will get unconditional support from the hoops in the stand.

As they step on that grass, ultimately it has to come from within.

I will take the Hopeful Sign that our Anxiety is now behind us...

That probably sums up the first 70 minutes when most of our players played like they had nappies on.

The final third was better. Hartley gave us an anchor in midfield and sno more composure.

Samaras gave impact and a conundrum do we drop skippy next week. Now I know it's a bit rich being hard on a player who scores so much but yet again i thought he looked jaded and his first touch and distribution was poor.

This game was always going to be a hurdle to overcome.

I will be honest i fear we may get humped next week if we play like this but my heart tells me this was just the first step on an exciting 10 stop journey so roll on saturday.

  • At 23/03/08 18:16, Blogger Hiro_Nakamura said…

We were much better when Sno and Hartley came on. At least retained possession and tried to play ball around.
McGeady escaped the shackles to provide two goals.
Robson not got it in central midfield.
Brown did his usual headless chicken act and got his customary booking.
Why does our manager persist in playing our two best ball players on the wing ( Naka and Aiden) but plays two previously wide players ( Brown and Robson) in the middle?

Either Naka or Aiden should play in a number 10 free role against Rangers, similar to Diego for Werder against them. His touch was out at Ibrox, but he gave them the runaround in Germany. Either of these two has the ability to play the role, and it would be a tactical surprise for the "Manager of the Year elect".

x, off course you are entitled to your opinion and that has to be respected. My point is that we are still in the title race, our goal difference is 3 better than it was earlier today and the outcome of the season is very much in our own hands.
Much has been made of rangers recent form, but they are grinding out results, just as we did today, we are not up against a juggernaut that is crushing all in it's path, we are up against a team that is set up to grind out results in the most unspectacular fashion, and if Dundee Utd and Partick can expose flaws in their system, then I'm pretty sure we can too.
I see no reason to throw in the towel.
It's time for us to play our part and not wait for an opportunity to cry 'I told you so' should we fail in the end!

I think the Rangers news was about David Murray giving them all a free trip to Lisbon. A free ticket with every over-priced charter ticket booking. Don't know what his second item was.

What did annoy me was Chico's comments on Celtic fans and WGS after the match today. He claimed that he had spoken with some Celtic-supporting mates (Story's credibility is already heading South)who confirmed to him that WGS has never been accepted by a major section of the Celtic support because "he was not Celtic minded, fact!"

Richard Gordon, after establishing what Chico meant by Celtic minded, tried to gently tease him that he had never heard the like from Celtic fans but Chico stuck to his guns.

So now we have a badge of shame below mineshafting and towel propulsion.

Come on, own up! Who's a friend of Chico?

Interesting comment, when should Sammy play? I too think he should start at the 2nd half, and make his impact throughout a whole 45 mins.
I also have the feeling we should play Evander as well, but only later on if things are still 0 – 0. And then…………… IMPACT the bassas :-)

I read your particular submission to which you are referring.

You soitenly did make that shrewd observation... that our problem was Celtic's lack of confidence, in themselves.

Today's game was Celtic's best performance for ages... or so it seemed.. as far as scoring goals was concerned.

    Forget,Celtic's dismal approach play.
    It is goals that count.

We took our chances... I do not recall any sitters being missed.

Mebbe, a half sitter... but all in all we are looking much bettah.

A lack of scoring, once again would have been a real downer.

    Things are looking up...
    So...what the Heck...

In retrospect.. Today's turn around in regaining our shooting boots, may be the match on which we started our longed for come-back.

    You nevah can tell!

Yes, it was three vital points and the scoreline did improve the goal average.

I am thankful for that, but have major reservations about the way we played for at least half the game.

Apart from an exciting late cameo from Samaras this largely turgid display did not fill me with optimism for Ibrox.

The build-up is pedestrian, the passing wayward and the commitment questionable.

For 40 minutes I thought Celtic were complacent, lethargic and disjointed.

Why is it that we start games at such a lackadaisical tempo?

A route one goal which went from Boruc, to JVOH to McDonald changed the perspective of the game.

But our defending was both nervy and unconvincing and but for a glaring miss by a makeshift Gretna side they would have got back to 1-1.

Brown's booking does not really bother me because I think we have bought a pig in a poke and headless one at that.

To have any chance of winning at Ibrox I think Samaras must start.

But I am not confident that Strachan will make the right decision.

I was disgusted by a Celtic fan who brandished some notes at a Gretna player as he was about to take a throw in front of the travelling support.

Some Celtic fans laughed but I don't think it is funny to take the Michael out of players who haven't been paid in recent weeks. Hun behaviour in my honest opinion.

I have absolutely no problem with Irish Republican songs and would defend the right to sing about our heritage because there is no way these songs are sectarian.

But I am quite sure that some of the songs sung today which came over loud and clear on Setanta will have been brought to the attention of the Scottish footballing authorities.
