Images of classic-Celtic foretell of despair and anger in lesser managers

Do the green and white hoops contain some memory of past experience; of different men, in different times and material, but perhaps linked with strips of the past which reflect the same hue?

Irrespective of how reflected light influence human beings, that was a Celtic performance yesterday in the truest sense of the words. Memories of the centenary season, when the spirit of Lisbon itself was recalled, have echoed repeatedly this season.

Our Champions League campaign could be caricatured as an 89 minute trailer followed by three minutes of the main event. Not that Gretna or St Mirren will believe such performances are saved only for Europe.

If you were surprised that Celtic rose like Lazarus when they were behind after 90 minutes, you shouldn’t have been. The only surprise is that they did not go on and win the game; which I am sure they would have, had Vennegoor of Hesselink’s goal not been the very last touch of the ball a Celtic player made.

Aberdeen were their usual good value; their goalkeeper, Derek Souter made an excellent double save from McDonald and Vennegoor of Hesselink, as well as saves from Nakamura and Sno, and with Celtic hitting the post on three occasions, they would be forgiven for thinking it was going to be their day.

It was a great sporting weekend, enhanced by the image of Jimmy Calderwood, bent double, head in hands, who in a reflective moment might wonder if Kama recalls May 2003, and the interesting news that Walter Smith appears to have far too much testosterone pulsing through his veins, leaving referee, Craig Thomson no choice but to expel him, like St Patrick banishing the vain serpent.

Aggressive confrontation is not a good example to set, “Walter”.

surprised there was only 2 mins of injury time as I'm sure Celtic would have went straight up the field again and scored the winner, had we even had an extra 30 seconds of play.

Lazurus like recovery eh Paul. Take it you were listening to the gospel yesterday then :-)

    Paul67, anyone,

can anybody confirm if Celtic are still paying half of Thomas Gravesons wages ?

Walter Smith was reacting to Mixu´s call yesterday for consistency. Walter was protecting the SFA´s right not to book Rangers players. As injuries and suspensions are playing a factor

Rangers have had 3 bookings this calendar year in the SPL. That´s one a month.

Two straight reds in the SC. Both reds being instant dismissals where the referee cannot hide. No bookings

    Eight bookings in the SC

Amazing (not) the press reaction to Sir Walter who has no surname, after he totally lost the plot yesterday. It has been turned round to him reacting to the Hibs bench for trying to get players sent off, when Novo was red carded IMMEDIATELY by the ref, without any added pressure from Hibs bench. And as Sir Walt said it was merited, what was his point? Lets be totally honest, this is not paranoia, had wee Gordon done the same the press would be pushing for the death penalty to be re-instated, for one day only, but they would probably want Aiden hanged as well, for treason. I hate the press in this country, they stink of double standards and bias. Lets see if the SFA or whoever deals with it will set the punishment to fit the crime. Mind you, with his previous record and what he did for Scotland etc, he may get a knighthood. Oh I forgot, he already has one. Where`s Jonnyquest?

At every level of football a studs up tackle is a no-no. At every level in football a two footed, studs up tackle is known as one thing… not a ball winning tackle… not at all, it is known as a LEG BREAKING tackle.

Novo did not go to ground and slide in two footed… studs up; rather, he lunged in two footed… studs up. A tackle with intent. I would have thought the physics of the tackle are that all the opposing forces that are equitable will be released through the first stud that makes contact. (Maybe Michael Collins could expand on that)

Had that been Neill Lennon who committed such an ‘innocuous challenge’, the righteous brotherhood of white gowned, topped with pointed white caps, with their flaming crosses and noose aye ready, would already have gathered in a malevolent pre-lynching frenzy.

Post an obligatory El Dorado/Buckfast cheese and wine ‘time out’ of course.

Don’t swallow the spin, Mixu Paatelainen, has got nothing to answer to, nor apologise for; it was not he who invaded the others technical area with the pointed finger and the snarling, mouth spraying invectives.

Yet some people would have you believe, by innuendo and omission, that, that is what actually happened.

How do you defend the indefensible… easy really… just get a few Scottish, Red Top integrityless slags to take up your case; throw in a couple of gripes from disillusioned Celtic supporters… just to give the defence a substantial toxic and obnoxious spice, throw a couple of curved balls and nobody remembers what you were on about in the first place.

Aw Naw: I don't know but I'd be suprised if it were so.

Firstly, did anyone hear Crai Patterson on Radio Scotland yesterday DEFEND Watty saying something like it was all harmless, no intent was meant blah blah blah? Now, we can all remember when Gordon Strachan went off on one and every columnist in the land was condemning our manager. Different standards, me thinks

Secondly, does anyone actually believe that Watty will serve any ban this season? Didnt think so

    Paul,

Celtic's performance restages football as a revengers tragedy. As a metatheory it contaminates the trope of history, providing us with new protagonists to (re)enact unresolved scenes.

Walter remains the blot on our collective consciousness. Fate has provided us with the opportunity to deal with this demon.

This is a time to invoke heroes; this is a time for Cúchulainn's (even if he was Setanta)

This is a time to pull together; this is a time to confront our antithesis.

But before we launch into the shadows comrade, remember...

I think we may be getting the wrong end of the stick here.

In keeping with 135 years of unsullied Dignity Walter was remonstating with Mr Paatelainen for objecting to the refs decision to red card Novo for the savage assault on his studs by the Hibs player.

As Walter graciously said after the game it was a natural mistake for the ref to make given the latin and papist ring to Mr Novo`s moniker.

I have had my attention drawn to Gerry McNee's article in yesterday's

His main item is an attack on the Holy Goalie who, in Gerry's unbiased opinion, needs a 'boot up the backside'.
He then moves the poison pen onto the behaviour of Gordon Stracan, or as he calls him,..'This stroppy, grumpy little man'.
Now on to the classic McNee summation....
' As the decisive Old Firm clashes approach, Rangers manager Walter Smith must be enjoying a wry smile as Strachan FLIPS HIS LID'.

    You timing is impeccable, Gerry.

When is a gap not a gap?
Yesterday as I watched the cup game on Celtic Replay, I was struck by the comparison in the cost of asembling the Celtic team vs that for Aberdeen. I do not know the precise cost and curent values of the two teams, but venture to suggest that there is a sizable gap between the two. Yet Celtic struggled to overcome their less "valuable" opponents, only avoiding defeat in the 91 minute.
Often during the game, Celtic were on the ropes for long periods defending and clearing attempts off the goal line. Not much to choose between the teams in terms of performance on the park yesterday, but certainly a significant difference in terms of the value of the assets on show.

Switch to the Camp Nou, again two teams seriously outmatched in terms of both the cost of assembly and current value, yet here there was a recognisable difference in terms of performance.

What sense can we make of that? Perhaps none, or perhaps, it shows that competitive performance is not solely based upon the value of the football assets on display. Having a financial advantage is not enough. To some degree, tactical savvy and Heart can overcome, or at least, match superior talent.

It seems to me that developing these is Celtic's best way of progressing both domestically and in Europe. Finding ways to punch above our weight is the key, and is affordable.

On another point, I am more and more impressed with Samy each time I see him. He has a great football brain. I hope we get him. To think that he might have gone to the other lot!

Rebus- I had similar thoughts watching the performance put in by Barnsley against Chelsea, and our poor showing in both legs against Barcelona. The gap between us and Barca must be narrower than that between Barnsley and Chelsea.

Amongst other things I think it shows that the tenfold increase from a 100k player to a £1m player is far less significant than the tenfold increase from £1m to £10m!!!!

Although bearing in mind we were close to our first defeat to Aberdeen in several lifetimes!

  • At 10/03/08 15:54, Blogger Mort said…

    rebus67,

Look at the FA Cup in England at the weekend. I would think only WBA would have been expected to win their match. The other teams who won would be considered to be as far away as their opponents as Aberdeen are from us, financially speaking.

Its just 4 weeks since we beat Aberdeen 5-1 at the same venue so that game may represent better the "gap".

Also would you not think that Milan would be as far ahead of us as Barcelona are yet in 4 games in 2007 we beat them once and drew twice with them.

This is the beauty of football in so far that the majority of times we will beat Aberdeen and the majority of times Barcelona will beat us but in a one off cup tie shocks can happen if the "big" team isn't at 100% and the "wee" team plays out of their skins.

Had Barcelona not came out in the second half at CP against us and played to their full potential we could be CL quarter finalists.

we will win the replay and then the double will be ours again.

    Hail Hail

rebus.......could it simply be that we showed Barca far too much respect? any underdog team who beats even the mightiest of teams show them no respect at all and just get in around them.

    Very well put Mort.

I actually thought we were in for a 0-0 yesterday due to the Barca game etc. An Aberdeen fan reckoned we would do them over again (natual order you see) but he is the most disappointed today.
Our expectations and emotions get the better of us. Money does make a big difference but there is always room for variables other than that.

Was at the game yesterday, with the linesman holding up the 2 minutes left board, it looked very much like we were gonners, far far too many missed chances, how ironic that the much maligned Massimo Donati set up the equalizer.

When wee Scott was taken off, it looked like a real blunder, he would have scored eventually, 100% effort non stop. So for JVOH and GG between them to finish off the move was brilliant for Gordon, in as much as tactically it looked like he got it spot on.

Saw Lee Naylor there, he looked as white as a ghost, might be the flu. And oh how Stephen Pressley celebrated the equalizer, clearly for the time being anyway, he is still very much one of us. Zander Diamond right enough was causing mayhem in our box, that’s a concern, and no doubts at all were gone but for big Artur's heroics inside the last 10 minutes. I read somewhere (on here?) that big Artur going up into their box in the 91st minute panicked them, I agree with that because before then they were fairly well composed under pressure.

The one thing that did puzzle me was how often Darren O'Dea drifted into the centre half position, leaving Naka or Aiden out left on their own, a couple of times he glanced across from the centre half position as if to say where's the left back? Thankfully, Aberdeen for whatever reason failed to exploit the free space down our left hand side.

Really hope we smash them in the replay.

    Thanks Paul.

From the looks of what was going on at Ipox,(thanks for the links bhoys). Smith was nearly in the Hibs dugout, surely there must be a severe punishment for this truly undignified behaviour!

It really is ridiculous that the establishment team and management can bully the MIB. They really believe they are above the law. If this is left to go unpunished the SFA and SPL will be the laughing stock of Europe.

And Artur Boruc cannot even applaud the fans!

The reaction already from the press on this one would be a good rod by which to measure any reaction from the powers.

Hibs' fault and the poor old pensioner was provoked don't you know. He'll probably be made out to be a Hero since he stood up to those dispicable folk within football who try to get the opposition booked etc.

I don't think that is too far away.

I think its important to note a couple of things with regards how well Aberdeen played on Sunday.

    1) They had more than 7 days rest since their last game

    2) Jimmy Calderwood has very recently threatened a 10 man clear out in the summer

    3) The state of the Aberdeen pitch

    4) If Aberdeen had lost yesterday then that was the end of their season and maybe said clear out would happen a lot sooner rather than later.

It always amazes me how much other SPL teams seem much more animated and committed when playing against the Champions than they do against any other team in the SPL.

I thought that yesterday Naka, Aiden, both CB´s and Donati were well below par. Evander Sno just shaded it but I´d like to see more from him and the rest bailed there under performimg team mates out.

I though Hinkel had a very good game.

    thisman,

I think you are correct in that it depends whereabouts you are on the value scale. 100K vs 1 million vs 10 million etc.

    Mort
I also agree that upon occasion, the under-dog will jump up and bite you! We have done that on the occasions that you mention.

I suppose part of the value difference that showed on Sunday was in the substitutes. On came Samy and (I know) Donati, both of whom played significant parts in the equaliser.

I could not bring myself to watch all of the Barca game, only the highlights, so I am sure I have a biased view of events. It did not look that bad -- I remember away games where Celtic never managed to get up the park. There were a couple of chances to score--Naka at the end, and JVOH earlier. What struck me was a) the superior ball skills of Barca--even moderate European teams seem to have superior ball skills to players in the Scottish game, and b) the savvy movement off the ball --- the old triangle where there is always two team mates in space and nearby to receive a pass. These are basic skills that can be learned on the training field. These problems are not new, nor are they exclusive to Celtic, it is generally true for our game.

Perhaps, the root cause lies in how the game is administered. Inadequate coaching at the youth level and inadequate policing of the senior game allowing skill players to be bullied or kicked off the park. It all leads to kick and rush football which does not fare well in Europe against a skillful team that is adequately protected by a referee.

Sorry for my Monday rant---got to go earn a living now.

This gets asked from time to time on the site. You'll find most of the relevant threads pretty quickly if you Google

    london pubs site:celticquicknews.co.uk

The last time it was asked in February, Kitalba posted these (he hasn't visited any of them himself, neither have I)

LONDON - JACK BEARDS, MITCHAM RD, TOOTING BROADWAY, SW17 (Wimbledon CSC)

LONDON - CODY'S BAR (aka The Rugby Tavern) LONDON RD, TWICKENHAM, MIDDLESEX (Shows Setanta)

    LONDON - BROAD GREEN TAVERN, 296 LONDON RD, WEST CROYDON, CR0 4DG (Tel. 020 8240 6026 9) (Bhoys of Croydon CSC) http://www.bhoysofcroydon.com/

There are various others. When I'm in town I usually go to the Marquis of Granby at Cambridge Circus, up Charing Cross Road from Leicester Square tube. I was there on Sunday, it was very quiet but it certainly won't be for the Rangers game, get there in good time!

£15 a ticket for the Aberdeen game, child goes free.

    Paul,
Apologies if this point has already been made, but "Walter" was not being aggressive, he was merely proving that he was passionate, that he had the hunger necessary to win this league. The mask of urbanity which he so carefully cultivates, slipped yesterday.
    He's a ned in sheep's clothing.

Rebus67, perhaps we should play all our home CL games up in Aberdeen. The state of the pitch and the gusting wind can be real levellers. Just ask Bayern.

Great to see that Cesar will be awarded an honorary degree in June by Glasgow University. His old pal John Greig will similarly be recognised.

I always thought that the club could have found an ambassadorial role for him.

I've felt that on occasion it was beneficial to the board to bring out the Lisbon Lions pre match etc. to boost their (the board) image at difficult times.

Don't have a great problem with that but do you know if Cesar was ever likely to be given a role at Celtic similar perhaps to Beckenbauer at Bayern and for whatever reason it didn't pan out?
