Images of classic-Celtic foretell of despair and anger in lesser managers

Do the green and white hoops contain some memory of past experience; of different men, in different times and material, but perhaps linked with strips of the past which reflect the same hue?

Irrespective of how reflected light influence human beings, that was a Celtic performance yesterday in the truest sense of the words. Memories of the centenary season, when the spirit of Lisbon itself was recalled, have echoed repeatedly this season.

Our Champions League campaign could be caricatured as an 89 minute trailer followed by three minutes of the main event. Not that Gretna or St Mirren will believe such performances are saved only for Europe.

If you were surprised that Celtic rose like Lazarus when they were behind after 90 minutes, you shouldn’t have been. The only surprise is that they did not go on and win the game; which I am sure they would have, had Vennegoor of Hesselink’s goal not been the very last touch of the ball a Celtic player made.

Aberdeen were their usual good value; their goalkeeper, Derek Souter made an excellent double save from McDonald and Vennegoor of Hesselink, as well as saves from Nakamura and Sno, and with Celtic hitting the post on three occasions, they would be forgiven for thinking it was going to be their day.

It was a great sporting weekend, enhanced by the image of Jimmy Calderwood, bent double, head in hands, who in a reflective moment might wonder if Kama recalls May 2003, and the interesting news that Walter Smith appears to have far too much testosterone pulsing through his veins, leaving referee, Craig Thomson no choice but to expel him, like St Patrick banishing the vain serpent.

Aggressive confrontation is not a good example to set, “Walter”.

surprised there was only 2 mins of injury time as I'm sure Celtic would have went straight up the field again and scored the winner, had we even had an extra 30 seconds of play.

Lazurus like recovery eh Paul. Take it you were listening to the gospel yesterday then :-)

    Paul67, anyone,

can anybody confirm if Celtic are still paying half of Thomas Gravesons wages ?

Walter Smith was reacting to Mixu´s call yesterday for consistency. Walter was protecting the SFA´s right not to book Rangers players. As injuries and suspensions are playing a factor

Rangers have had 3 bookings this calendar year in the SPL. That´s one a month.

Two straight reds in the SC. Both reds being instant dismissals where the referee cannot hide. No bookings

    Eight bookings in the SC

Amazing (not) the press reaction to Sir Walter who has no surname, after he totally lost the plot yesterday. It has been turned round to him reacting to the Hibs bench for trying to get players sent off, when Novo was red carded IMMEDIATELY by the ref, without any added pressure from Hibs bench. And as Sir Walt said it was merited, what was his point? Lets be totally honest, this is not paranoia, had wee Gordon done the same the press would be pushing for the death penalty to be re-instated, for one day only, but they would probably want Aiden hanged as well, for treason. I hate the press in this country, they stink of double standards and bias. Lets see if the SFA or whoever deals with it will set the punishment to fit the crime. Mind you, with his previous record and what he did for Scotland etc, he may get a knighthood. Oh I forgot, he already has one. Where`s Jonnyquest?

At every level of football a studs up tackle is a no-no. At every level in football a two footed, studs up tackle is known as one thing… not a ball winning tackle… not at all, it is known as a LEG BREAKING tackle.

Novo did not go to ground and slide in two footed… studs up; rather, he lunged in two footed… studs up. A tackle with intent. I would have thought the physics of the tackle are that all the opposing forces that are equitable will be released through the first stud that makes contact. (Maybe Michael Collins could expand on that)

Had that been Neill Lennon who committed such an ‘innocuous challenge’, the righteous brotherhood of white gowned, topped with pointed white caps, with their flaming crosses and noose aye ready, would already have gathered in a malevolent pre-lynching frenzy.

Post an obligatory El Dorado/Buckfast cheese and wine ‘time out’ of course.

Don’t swallow the spin, Mixu Paatelainen, has got nothing to answer to, nor apologise for; it was not he who invaded the others technical area with the pointed finger and the snarling, mouth spraying invectives.

Yet some people would have you believe, by innuendo and omission, that, that is what actually happened.

How do you defend the indefensible… easy really… just get a few Scottish, Red Top integrityless slags to take up your case; throw in a couple of gripes from disillusioned Celtic supporters… just to give the defence a substantial toxic and obnoxious spice, throw a couple of curved balls and nobody remembers what you were on about in the first place.

Aw Naw: I don't know but I'd be suprised if it were so.

Firstly, did anyone hear Crai Patterson on Radio Scotland yesterday DEFEND Watty saying something like it was all harmless, no intent was meant blah blah blah? Now, we can all remember when Gordon Strachan went off on one and every columnist in the land was condemning our manager. Different standards, me thinks

Secondly, does anyone actually believe that Watty will serve any ban this season? Didnt think so

    Paul,

Celtic's performance restages football as a revengers tragedy. As a metatheory it contaminates the trope of history, providing us with new protagonists to (re)enact unresolved scenes.

Walter remains the blot on our collective consciousness. Fate has provided us with the opportunity to deal with this demon.

This is a time to invoke heroes; this is a time for Cúchulainn's (even if he was Setanta)

This is a time to pull together; this is a time to confront our antithesis.

I think we may be getting the wrong end of the stick here.

In keeping with 135 years of unsullied Dignity Walter was remonstating with Mr Paatelainen for objecting to the refs decision to red card Novo for the savage assault on his studs by the Hibs player.

As Walter graciously said after the game it was a natural mistake for the ref to make given the latin and papist ring to Mr Novo`s moniker.

His main item is an attack on the Holy Goalie who, in Gerry's unbiased opinion, needs a 'boot up the backside'.
He then moves the poison pen onto the behaviour of Gordon Stracan, or as he calls him,..'This stroppy, grumpy little man'.
Now on to the classic McNee summation....
' As the decisive Old Firm clashes approach, Rangers manager Walter Smith must be enjoying a wry smile as Strachan FLIPS HIS LID'.

When is a gap not a gap?
Yesterday as I watched the cup game on Celtic Replay, I was struck by the comparison in the cost of asembling the Celtic team vs that for Aberdeen. I do not know the precise cost and curent values of the two teams, but venture to suggest that there is a sizable gap between the two. Yet Celtic struggled to overcome their less "valuable" opponents, only avoiding defeat in the 91 minute.
Often during the game, Celtic were on the ropes for long periods defending and clearing attempts off the goal line. Not much to choose between the teams in terms of performance on the park yesterday, but certainly a significant difference in terms of the value of the assets on show.

Switch to the Camp Nou, again two teams seriously outmatched in terms of both the cost of assembly and current value, yet here there was a recognisable difference in terms of performance.

What sense can we make of that? Perhaps none, or perhaps, it shows that competitive performance is not solely based upon the value of the football assets on display. Having a financial advantage is not enough. To some degree, tactical savvy and Heart can overcome, or at least, match superior talent.

It seems to me that developing these is Celtic's best way of progressing both domestically and in Europe. Finding ways to punch above our weight is the key, and is affordable.

On another point, I am more and more impressed with Samy each time I see him. He has a great football brain. I hope we get him. To think that he might have gone to the other lot!

Rebus- I had similar thoughts watching the performance put in by Barnsley against Chelsea, and our poor showing in both legs against Barcelona. The gap between us and Barca must be narrower than that between Barnsley and Chelsea.

Amongst other things I think it shows that the tenfold increase from a 100k player to a £1m player is far less significant than the tenfold increase from £1m to £10m!!!!

Although bearing in mind we were close to our first defeat to Aberdeen in several lifetimes!

  • At 10/03/08 15:54, Blogger Mort said…

    rebus67,

Look at the FA Cup in England at the weekend. I would think only WBA would have been expected to win their match. The other teams who won would be considered to be as far away as their opponents as Aberdeen are from us, financially speaking.

Its just 4 weeks since we beat Aberdeen 5-1 at the same venue so that game may represent better the "gap".

Also would you not think that Milan would be as far ahead of us as Barcelona are yet in 4 games in 2007 we beat them once and drew twice with them.

This is the beauty of football in so far that the majority of times we will beat Aberdeen and the majority of times Barcelona will beat us but in a one off cup tie shocks can happen if the "big" team isn't at 100% and the "wee" team plays out of their skins.

Had Barcelona not came out in the second half at CP against us and played to their full potential we could be CL quarter finalists.

we will win the replay and then the double will be ours again.

    Very well put Mort.

I actually thought we were in for a 0-0 yesterday due to the Barca game etc. An Aberdeen fan reckoned we would do them over again (natual order you see) but he is the most disappointed today.
Our expectations and emotions get the better of us. Money does make a big difference but there is always room for variables other than that.

Was at the game yesterday, with the linesman holding up the 2 minutes left board, it looked very much like we were gonners, far far too many missed chances, how ironic that the much maligned Massimo Donati set up the equalizer.

When wee Scott was taken off, it looked like a real blunder, he would have scored eventually, 100% effort non stop. So for JVOH and GG between them to finish off the move was brilliant for Gordon, in as much as tactically it looked like he got it spot on.

Saw Lee Naylor there, he looked as white as a ghost, might be the flu. And oh how Stephen Pressley celebrated the equalizer, clearly for the time being anyway, he is still very much one of us. Zander Diamond right enough was causing mayhem in our box, that’s a concern, and no doubts at all were gone but for big Artur's heroics inside the last 10 minutes. I read somewhere (on here?) that big Artur going up into their box in the 91st minute panicked them, I agree with that because before then they were fairly well composed under pressure.

The one thing that did puzzle me was how often Darren O'Dea drifted into the centre half position, leaving Naka or Aiden out left on their own, a couple of times he glanced across from the centre half position as if to say where's the left back? Thankfully, Aberdeen for whatever reason failed to exploit the free space down our left hand side.

Really hope we smash them in the replay.

From the looks of what was going on at Ipox,(thanks for the links bhoys). Smith was nearly in the Hibs dugout, surely there must be a severe punishment for this truly undignified behaviour!

It really is ridiculous that the establishment team and management can bully the MIB. They really believe they are above the law. If this is left to go unpunished the SFA and SPL will be the laughing stock of Europe.

And Artur Boruc cannot even applaud the fans!

The reaction already from the press on this one would be a good rod by which to measure any reaction from the powers.

Hibs' fault and the poor old pensioner was provoked don't you know. He'll probably be made out to be a Hero since he stood up to those dispicable folk within football who try to get the opposition booked etc.

I think its important to note a couple of things with regards how well Aberdeen played on Sunday.

    1) They had more than 7 days rest since their last game

    2) Jimmy Calderwood has very recently threatened a 10 man clear out in the summer

    3) The state of the Aberdeen pitch

    4) If Aberdeen had lost yesterday then that was the end of their season and maybe said clear out would happen a lot sooner rather than later.

It always amazes me how much other SPL teams seem much more animated and committed when playing against the Champions than they do against any other team in the SPL.

I thought that yesterday Naka, Aiden, both CB´s and Donati were well below par. Evander Sno just shaded it but I´d like to see more from him and the rest bailed there under performimg team mates out.

I though Hinkel had a very good game.

    thisman,

I think you are correct in that it depends whereabouts you are on the value scale. 100K vs 1 million vs 10 million etc.

    Mort
I also agree that upon occasion, the under-dog will jump up and bite you! We have done that on the occasions that you mention.

I suppose part of the value difference that showed on Sunday was in the substitutes. On came Samy and (I know) Donati, both of whom played significant parts in the equaliser.

I could not bring myself to watch all of the Barca game, only the highlights, so I am sure I have a biased view of events. It did not look that bad -- I remember away games where Celtic never managed to get up the park. There were a couple of chances to score--Naka at the end, and JVOH earlier. What struck me was a) the superior ball skills of Barca--even moderate European teams seem to have superior ball skills to players in the Scottish game, and b) the savvy movement off the ball --- the old triangle where there is always two team mates in space and nearby to receive a pass. These are basic skills that can be learned on the training field. These problems are not new, nor are they exclusive to Celtic, it is generally true for our game.

Perhaps, the root cause lies in how the game is administered. Inadequate coaching at the youth level and inadequate policing of the senior game allowing skill players to be bullied or kicked off the park. It all leads to kick and rush football which does not fare well in Europe against a skillful team that is adequately protected by a referee.

Sorry for my Monday rant---got to go earn a living now.

    london pubs site:celticquicknews.co.uk

The last time it was asked in February, Kitalba posted these (he hasn't visited any of them himself, neither have I)

LONDON - JACK BEARDS, MITCHAM RD, TOOTING BROADWAY, SW17 (Wimbledon CSC)

LONDON - CODY'S BAR (aka The Rugby Tavern) LONDON RD, TWICKENHAM, MIDDLESEX (Shows Setanta)

There are various others. When I'm in town I usually go to the Marquis of Granby at Cambridge Circus, up Charing Cross Road from Leicester Square tube. I was there on Sunday, it was very quiet but it certainly won't be for the Rangers game, get there in good time!

My dear, dear, friend El Diego Bhoy

It seems from your submission, that you are in agreement with Glasgow University in Bestowing an
    Honorary Degree on Mr. McNeil.

I hereby, wish to go on record in stating... that I am diametrically opposed to this bestowal.

    That being said...

    My question is ...

Why are they prompted to dispense this honor on an individual, who has absolutely no connections to this University?

And for what purpose, are they doing so?

I am not picking on Mr. McNeil per se... however, this present nonsense of awarding MEANINGLESS Honors, to Tom Dick and Herbert , is a Trait that I despise.

It seems that this piece of nonsense, is a ploy that is used only for self-agrandisement, by the Universities of the world.

I for one, despise the practice.

A University exists for doing what Universities have been doing for years...

    Education and Teaching...and... that's it.

Although, I am well aware they are also, usually... a hot bed of nonsensical socialistic ideologies...

But true to form ...they turn around and fly in the face of their Socialistic Tendencies...

    and....

Here we have them indulging in ELITISM, at it's most disgusting and self indulging.

    Case closed.

    Paul...

I as a Rangers fan have been reading your site's articles for the past couple of years. I find some of what you write, with regards to the financial side of things, interesting albeit understandably put with a positive spin on most things as is your want for your club; and given that is of course a Celtic fan site.

Firstly let me say that I wish Tommy B all the best just now. He is a credit his club and country and let's all hope that he can pull through and win his battle.

In reading your site in recent months I have noted a trend for you to head down the lines of perpetuating the myth of Celtic being hard done to in terms of refereeing decisions and the like throughout the history of the game in this country. I can only speak in terms of the current climate, not being old enough to remember what it may have been like in the earlier parts of the 20th century. Celtic have had some harsh decisions in the past; the Farry scandal being one example and the right result was arrived at. But this theory that things continually go against your club really does nobody from the club any credit. Fans, players or manager.

Taking this season as an example. There is a gripe that Celtic have been getting a hard time from referees, and that by association to this Rangers have had decisions in their favour. The theory over Mike McCurry being anti-Celtic being one example because he booked 9 Celtic players in an Old Firm game. McGeady being the type of player he is being booked so much when he is not a dirty player. Many of his bookings being as a result of him being a mouthy player. I don't doubt there have been some bookings which have been harsh. But just because this has happened does not mean that bodies are conspiring against Celtic. Rangers have had some truly abysmal decisions go against us this season, and the odd one for us too. Ferguson's handball in the League Cup semi-final being one. However decisions at ICT re an offside goal that wasn't offside, Gretna away when we were awarded a penalty and then it was not allowed as the incident was deemed offside anyway when it wasn't offside. The goal in the OF game that was not offside. The penalty decisions we did not get in both ties against Hibs in the cup. There are many more. Just as you could list many for your side. These are not the result of a conspiracy, just mistakes from the referees and co. It happens. Just get on with things and accept that these mistakes do happen.

I have noted in recent articles and comments that you have begun to deride Rangers, and bemoan our 'refereeing decisions' to the extent where you suggest that we are in benefit of favours from the hierarchy of the Scottish game. I note that these have become more frequent as the season has worn on and your predictions of Celtic comfortably winning the league ahead of Rangers because of the club's respective financial positions at the moment (some of which I agree with btw... the JJB deal is not something I was a fan of in any case and I felt it was short termism by Murray; just as the Hutton sale was... don't get me started on that one!) isn't bearing fruit. There is a long way to go still and I personally make Celtic favourites due to our run-in being slightly tougher with more away games. Every fan has their right to moan about decisions etc, it is what the game should be about. Opinions. But comments such as your reference to another conspiracy back in 03 that Dunfermline 'lay-down' at Ibrox and relating that somehow to Jimmy Calderwood being given some form of retribution for his part in that great anti-Celtic piece of Scottish football history are all-the-more surprising from a site which claims to not indulge in lazy journalism. Celtic news, not lazy journalism indeed. Why then feel the need to go down these routes?

re the Smith incident; he deserves everything he gets for that incident. It was very poor fare and I expect he will be banned for a number of games, rightly so. I think a similar ban to that handed out to Mr Lennon would seem sufficient, 3 games I think?

I expect that this post may be moved/deleted and or derided by some fans on here. This is not unexpected as it is probably fair game given I am a gers fan posting on your site. But I just felt I wanted to post some thoughts.

Here's to an exciting run-in and may the best team win. Let's leave it at that and not taint it; whoever comes out on top.

What we are witnessing in Medialand is the result of Murray's summit with the media when he called on the "Rangers Family" to get behind the club.

    W. Smith's actions yesterday showed the other side of a Rangers supporter.

There are only two kinds of them.

One, the knuckledragger who is to be found everywhere with their vile, foul mouthed obscenities dripping from their mouths.

The second, is the mild mannered, plausibly disingenuous, patronising gent, who we all know. The kind who didn't actually see the bad tackle or read the offending piece.

One who can plausibly explain away 135 years of dignity, but every once in a while, the masks slips and they are exposed as a worse specimen than the aforementioned ned who at least has the excuse of being pig ignorant.

Smith falls into the category of the second kind.

The evil tree cannot bear good fruit.

    Keep telling it, Han Solo.

    1. If Dunfermline did lie down that day, wasn't it really a bad idea to score an absolute belter of a goal and force Klos into 2 other very very good saves that day?

    2. If someone offers to pay for a holiday, do you just say... nah I won't take it because someone may think it was a conspiracy. I think you would take the offer of a free booze up would you not?

Did Sutton know what the management's father had planned if they had lay down as 'pre-agreed'?

SeeBee, thanks for sharing that news about your cousin, Pat. My thoughts are with you, Patty and the rest of Pat’s family.

Welcome govanrear, good to hear from you.

First of all, if you have been reading for a while, you should know that I don’t delete adversarial comments (not that your's is). As long as the language bar is respected, posts stay.

I very seldom talk about referees and did for the first time this season when Celtic benefited from a couple of dubious decisions away to Falkirk a couple of months ago.

The Aiden McGeady situation this season is an interesting case. He is prone to speak out, but I believe he does not get the protection he deserves. I see cause and effect and framed my comments on him in this light.

I believe that most referees do their best to be even handed, but I also try to be even handed, but don’t always manage it. Referees will be no different.

Mike McCurry is just a bad referee. He failed to control the Celtic game at Ibrox and failed again in the LC semi at Hampden.

I do deride Rangers every now and then, this is a Celtic site after all, often when I think they are not getting it from the old media when they should be.

I indulged in rhetoric today with my comments on Jimmy Calderwood and Walter Smith, although I was deliberately vague on Calderwood; Karma is a complex business.

Smith has escaped ridicule due to his position; if Mixu (not being over familiar, just cannot spell his surname) acted in that manner he would be the sacrificial lamb right now.

Do I get a prize for working Buddhism and Judaism into a reply?

Glad to hear you think we are favourites, I hope you’re right!

I know that naturally as a fan you notice grievances against your side far more than against other teams. Equally you turn a blind eye to some beneficial decisions as they tend to be forgotten if they help you win a game! This is where we all, either consciously or not, wear blue or green specs! I am not sure how often I will be able to post on here as I am on a few forums and read a few blogs and stuff (moderating one which is an Old Firm forum; if you wish to know more about it then email me at gavwright2@yahoo.co.uk) and tend to struggle to keep up with all of them.

I would not bring you to task over your post. I was at Falkirk when the ref could easily have awarded Falkirk 2 penalties, I watched with surprise when the ref. awarded Celtic a free kick at Love St to enable Naka to score, what could be, a title deciding goal but what I will say is an injustice, is the way that your Chairman has some of the media poodles lapping at his feet, printing his obvious untruths and refusing to do some good investigative journalism into some of the goings on at Ibrox.

Hope you are right about the destination of the Flag..........it's all that matters.

Guys, I think I mentioned in my post that I can't comment and pour scorn on some theories from years back as I have only been around since 1980! If I didn't then I meant to!

I am not at the wind up. I cannae be bothered with all that as we get enough on our forum believe me! Neither is this some sort of advertising campaign for it, hence why I have not posted the link.

Paul, I wasn't sure if it would be deleted or not. I am not sure how this place works, but did notice that some posts had been removed. I wasn't sure that this was all done by the author or by the site owner or whatever. lol @ your buddhism & judaism line.

Maybe it is because I don't come from the same supporters base. i don't know. If I had been brought up with stories told of wronged decisions etc (we have enough of them on our side too!) then perhaps I would subscribe to some of these theories too. But I just don't believe they exist.

Regards the 1 penalty awarded way back when over a certain period of time. One of our members on our forum investigated that and found at least 5 penalties where Celtic had scored against Hearts during the time of said accusation then stopped looking as this was in fact a myth. I can't speak for him, but I know he is not a Wind up kind of guy so can't imagine he was telling porkies. Like I say, I know that the attitudes of this country have changed since the first airings of sectarian goings on. Rangers policy re catholics was a farce an we have rightly moved on. Perhaps there was an agenda against Celtic way back when. I don't know. But since I have been old enough to watch and take in games I cannot think of there being one (Farry scandal apart which was just a bloody joke!). Maybe that is those blue tinted specs again. But by the same token there are some green tinted ones on here too ;-)

I actually believe that had Mixu Put-a-line-on had done what Smith had he would not have been subject to the same number of calls, and pages as Strachan and/or Smith have in recent incidents. It is the nature of the OF.

I welcome your well constructed, well voiced, and well intentioned submission.

I hope that you will continue to post on this site, as it is not very often that a member of the loyal opposition, submits his version of the truth...as he sees it!

    What is truth?

A silly question... or.. is it?

I have every confidence that I can recognise the truth when I see it.

Although... I am also sure that you in your own judgement, also has that ability.

But wait a minute.... are we only fooling ourselves?

Now, that I think about it...

    Yeah, we sure are!

To tell you the truth, the truth of the matter, is this...

Whatever, I recognise as the truth, is..... well..... The Truth!

And therefore by the same train of illogic....

Whatever, that you deem to be the truth...is.... well... The Truth!

Nevertheless, this kind of controversial soup tickles the world's palate.
It is what makes life so interesting.

There must always be a Protagonist for every Antagonist.

And the beauty of this state of affairs....is that one always believes that he/she is undoubtedly, the Protagonist... in the ongoing controversy...

And his rival is always... the Antagonist!

The point that I am struggling manfully to make ,is this....

I hope that you continue to post your thoughts and views.

    We,of course, in our wisdom.....

Will totally disagree with all of your main arguments against our confirmed points of view.

And you, of course, will scoff at our assertions and accusations, targetted, against your points of view.

    Ergo...

In that way we will be in for a smashing and entertaining, knock-down,old fashioned...cyber Donnybrook!

Much to the delight of both sides!

As I have said once... na!... more than that!

Controversy, is what makes the world go round!

Just ask your significant other... well... on third thoughts...

That might just lead to... ?

Although, as you know..make up time..can be a rather rewarding experience...

    Keep on trucking.

I came back from Seville on the Friday night, got my head down and put a shift in on my taxi on the Saturday night ahead of another session on the Sunday.

That night on BBC Radio Scotland Jimmy Calderwood was asked about the upcoming game the next day at Ibrox. This may not be exactly word for word but almost.

His words were 'I would feel bad about upsetting my father, who has a season ticket at Rangers. We are just going to go there and enjoy the occasion'. At that point, to my knowledge, there was no 'occasion'. I thought there was a competitive game of football going to be played between Rangers and Dunfermline.

Chris Sutton was absolutely right in what he said. I just wish there were more like him who tell it like it is. Surely you must recall the penalty incident at the death. Only an ex-Rangers player could have gave that away, it was ridiculous!

You can be sure the Dunfermline players put a lot less into that game than the Killie players did v us. Timewasting when you are 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0 down, have you ever seen anything like it? You had the likes of Alan Mahood, a man I despise, celebrating like mad and giving it big licks in the tunnel to the Celtic players.

A wee story about Alan Mahood. I was 13 at the time, about to sign an S form with Morton when I turned 14 in the March of 1994, this was the October school break 1993. Training with the first team at the Battery Park in Greenock we were doing an excercise where you ran backwards round a square, heading the ball back to your partner. I had the Cork City strip of the time under my Morton training top, it consisted of green, white and red stripes and you could just see the collar and the bottom from under the training top. Anyways, I go and fall over a cone like an eejit and Mahood was in the next duo behind me and my partner. He comes over as if to help me up but instead pulls his hand away, laughs, and says 'Get up yersel ya wee fenian b******'. I've never forgotten it and just wish I had the guts to 'do' him in the game at the end, but I didn't want to endanger my prospects with Morton.

Had I known I was to suffer an injury to my knee that summer that kept me out for over a year I might have thought differently.

As you can see, unlike the Murphys, I am bitter still about that day in 2003!

If you have been reading for a couple of years then you will know that your fellow "bear" EdwardUrsus has been welcome here since day one.

I don't agree with Edward too often but I am glad he posts here and I hope you join in that. (I'm sure Edward could do with some moral support anyway).

The problem is that we Celtic supporters have rarely or ever been welcome on Rangers forums to debate a point of view and as such most of us simply give up as it is too much hassle and abuse.

Maybe more civilised exchanges between us all (although I doubt we will ever agree on anything)would make the world a tiny wee bit better than it normally is in the West of Scotland and elsewhere.

I didn't see that game but it seemed like it was full of contentious decisions!

You talk about the Naka free kick at St Mirren which was soft, but equally poor old Falkirk suffered similarly at ibrox when JCD got a very soft one from which Boyd scored the opener. Some you win some you lose I guess is all I am trying to say.

You put forward a good case to back up your side, but any mention of Calderwood and that game in 2003 see the red mist come down!

And I still think McCurry is a cheat, pure and simple, but we agree to disagree!

Totally off-topic here folks but I just received a phone call from Celtic trying to sell me the Celtic Credit Card. When I said I wasn't interested the guy pretty abruptly hung up on me. I'm never one to criticise the club but I don't think this is the way we should be treating fans who already plough as much money as possible into the club without risking divorce or bankruptcy (whichever comes first!).

The guy was pretty chatty at first but I found it strange for a Celtic employee to be coming out with "I'm pretty disappointed with the season so far" while trying to sell me a club credit card.

This is the third time they've called. The first being midway through the second half of the Barca game!?! The guy said "Is this a good time to talk to you?" and I thought he was joking!

I'm a season ticket holder and I am still daft enough to buy every new strip that comes out but I don't really appreciate the club trying to get even more money out of me this way.

On more important matters, my best wishes go out to Tommy Burns. The term Celtic legend is used way too hastily but Tommy is one of the few who really deserves the label. Who knows whether Tommy would have stopped the (second) 9IAR if he had been backed to the hilt with money the way Smith was back then. If there is such a thing as Karma, then Tommy will help Gordon beat the waistcoat in the aftermath of Rangers' financial bubble bursting thanks to previous over-spending.

Finally, calling all season ticket holders. If you can possibly make it along to the game on Wednesday please try your best. We badly need to improve the atmosphere and show that we want to win the league more than the dark side. Two wins this week and we go top and the pressure passes to the other side of the city for a while.

Is that the script for the replay? My wee bhoy is only 6 and his ticket is paid for on the home cup ticket scheme automatically by Direct Debit. I wonder if they'll take the ticket money from himif that's the case. It also means I can legally take my other wee bhoy and I don't need to squash the two of them in at the same time using my older bhoys ticket!

I suppose it is a way of swelling the crowd and giving kids who might not get the chance to go often the chance to see a big match and not some pre-season game. I am surprised though as I thought it might have been a healthy attendance in any case.

    GovanRear,

good to hear from you, but obviously I disagree with your thoughts on the bias issue. Can I just say though, that being a product of a mixed mariage - my mothers family proud green-tinted spec wearers, whilst my father's side are blue-tinted-occasionally-speckled-with-orange spec wearers -I tend not to indulge in the hyperbole often associated with this issue.

However, even my old man - who thanks to a few years spent working down in England mellowed in the divide - has agreed that over the years he has been watching the game, Rangers receive much more of the blatant awards whilst they tend to go against Celtic, two fairly recent examples being Bazza Ferguson's hand-ball in the CIS Semi and the non award of the penalty to Celtic after Neil Lennon was scythed down in the box at Ibrox last year.

Other notables this season have been the lack of bookings for rangers players running into the crowd to celebrate, whereas Celtic's players have been booked.

No doubt we will always agree to disagree on this, but keep posting and I look forward to disagreeing with you more often.

    HAIL! HAIL!

PS - BTW you do know we already have a resident Teddy Berr who posts on this site, you could be stepping on his toes. Hope he thinks so too and you two have a wee rammy, nothing better than watching a set-to involving two gers fans beating lumps out of each other. As long as they both lose that is! :-)

    @ Kojo - lmao. Brilliant.

Porridge - I have that game on DVD and there is no way on this earth that they were lying down. The penalty at the end actually made no difference to the final outcome, but I take the point you are trying to make because it could have done. I would suggest though that the referee got that one wrong! It was very soft and MacPherson is raging when it is given against him. Even debating it seems pointless as we are never going to agree on it anyway!

Shamrock, cheers for that mate. Interesting that I am not the only bear who seems to venture on here for a wee gander from time to time.

Some forums, on both sides of the divide, are irritating because you can't debate without being castigated at times! Some of the stuff on follow follow is a bloody joke I am told... I have never even looked at it because other people have told me it is ridiculous. This is why the old beeb boards were good because you got an Old Firm one which was good for banter and debate. Paul, I don't want you to think I am trying an ad campaign! I am not mate honest; but if anyone fancies it then drop a message to the address above. If you aren't happy about it being on there Paul please just remove it if you can, or ask me to if you don't have 'moderating' powers to do so or whatever you need for this internet thingymajig... :-/

I think £15 for the replay is pretty reasonable. There are costs to be covered and, as far as I know, no TV income from the game.

On that Sunday, we got a pen and missed it, but our most creative force (Maloney) was taken out early by the aforementioned runt Mahood, Gordon Marshall time-wasted from the hour-mark, Killie fans cheered as they were horsed. However, is it urban myth or more to suggest that the Dunfermline players headed off to the airport hours after the game? Last game of the season, where's the incentive to put in 100%? Ah, bygones, but despite the passage of time, the smell lingers. Maybe we won't find closure til we win on the last day. This season, when we beat Calderwood's Aberdeen?

    Gordon J,

I take your point, but I think you missed mine ( though mine was badly put in the first place )

Yes, on the face of it £15 is reasonable, if not for the fact that they still owe us games ( which we have already paid for )

covering costs in situations like these are why we have to shell out before the half way point ( mostly up front revenue )of the season, low cost or not, should be free, as already paid for more than once.

  • At 10/03/08 23:44, Blogger govanrear said…

    Bloke....

Re the Killie fans.. would you not think that they would have jeered the Rangers players and fans if their title was about to go to the other side by the closest of margins? Football fans wind each other up. I would think that's what the killie fans were doing rather than en-mass wishing that Celtic didn't win the league!

Marshall maybe time-wasted; I have no idea having not seen it but take your word for it mate. But as an ex-Celt surely he should be castigated for this as much as those who like to do so against Mahood and the likes. The urban myth possibility you were talking about, I have no idea but Mick earlier mentioned it and I replied. I don't think he has replied yet.

Finally, if you want some sort of 'vengeance' on Calderwood you better hope his side make the top 6 this year! ;-) Maybe you could distract him by giving him a bunch of vouchers for the tanning salons on Duke st! Bit of bribery may work wonders! ;-)

    Govanrear,

I was at the Killie game, and witnessed a near riot when a member of the Killie backroom team kept popping out of the little medical centre, each time holding up fingers to show the ipox scoreline, this info was also passed onto the team on the pitch,

Just cos were paranoid, doesn't mean that they aint out to get us.

govanrear - welcome to CQN. Any intelligent Rangers fan will always be welcome on this site. Congratulations on doubling the number.

Honest mistakes from referees are inevitable, and perhaps, just perhaps, Celtic fans are sometimes too quick to look for injustice, but the linesman at Tynecastle in 2005 and the referee/minister at Ibrox last year, to take two recent examples, push the random incompetence theory a little too far for me. The title-determining 'mistake' in 2005 defied belief, and please explain to me how the club with the otherwise best discipline record in the country could possibly justify an unheralded 9 (NINE) yellow cards in a match most of their fans felt they didn't turn up for. To put it simply, your club, in my opinion, get more of these decsisions than mine, and when the league title is close, like this season, the problem is particularly acute.

    Firstly,

I would want to add my supportive thoughts for Tommy Burns and his family. I fully expect to hear his name loudly sung on Wednesday.

Secondly, I can agree with a lot of govanrear's comments without reaching the same conclusions.

Most refereeing errors are genuine misjudgements; these will fall equally for and against all teams. Sometimes refs are influenceable, weak minded refs can be swayed by a home crowd or an intimidating captain and bloody minded refs, like Brines, can take dislikes and react against players and teams.

That still leaves space for some cheating. Football, being a low scoring game, is more open to being influenced by a cheating ref than Basketball, Rugby or Volleyball.

We can leave ourselves open to charges of paranoia by complaining of every decision that goes against us. But I know, in my heart of hearts, that we have been cheated by refs deliberately in our history.

On another day and at a less late hour, I will give my evidence. It will not include Farrygate which was anti- Fergus more than anti - Celtic ( we were collateral damage there). It does not include the 2003 season either as I think we colluded in our own disadvantages that day at Kilmarnock.

    Good night for now

Just compare the hate stories and calls for lengthy bans when Neil Lennon pushed the Ref at the end of an old firm game and the non coverage of the forth official being pushed by Uncle Walter.
On Radio Clyde as predicted they came out with the old "we didn't see it or hear about it" comment, from people who are paid to watch and discuss Football.

Morning All, This little piece of info is in most of the redtops this morning, albeit hidden away at the end of longer articles.......Novo's tackles parked furious scenes and led to Rangers boss Smith being sent to the stand.

He faces a two-game ban which will begin when Celtic visit Ibrox for a crunch Old Firm showdown on March 29.

Smith, who erupted in anger and accused Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen of trying to get his players into trouble with the referee, won't contest theban.

Well I’m glad I never held my breath, because the barrage of scorn that I was expecting to be directed against that finger pointing, invective spraying purveyor of all things dignified, ‘oor Wattie’ did in fact… fail to materialise. Why don’t I feel cheated or disappointed on that score?

The press, with omission, insinuation, and innuendo, have us all now believing Mixu Paatelenien is the Devil incarnate. It was his entire fault. He has no damn right to protect his own player and no damn right hide in his own technical area.

This really is a test of how impartially fair - the powers that be - actually are.

I’m not going to let apathy, and lethargy, get in the way of my paranoia. I’ve become partial to the medication.

I am most, most, interested to see what punishment such thuggish behaviour will attract. If any.
