McManus and co. should heed the lesson of John Kennedy

I know Stephen McManus will enjoy captaining his country tonight and I hope Gary Caldwell gets the chance to partner him in central defence. The Celtic defence are pressurised far too infrequently, which leaves them exposed when they come up against teams like Barcelona, with the pace and touch to burn.

They have a big game ahead of them on Saturday so facing a top international team will sharpen the concentration.

It will be almost exactly four years since John Kennedy, who was ahead of McManus at Celtic and miles ahead of both Caldwell and McManus in the Scotland setup, received a career threatening injury which he has not fully recovered from, while playing for Scotland, so all Celtic players involved should look for an injury free evening first-and-foremost.

'The Celtic defence are pressurised far too infrequently, which leaves them exposed when they come up against teams like Barcelona, with the pace and touch to burn'

    Are you serious?

How come we could not go an away game without a clean sheet in over a year? You can not blame the opposition for Caldwell and McManus making mistakes against better teams
    !
I think it is the other way about, because they are not pressurised as much as they might be their weknesses are not fully exploited.

Surely what you have written has came across the wrong way.

i tell a lie - Aberdeen FC was born out of the merger of three city clubs; Aberdeen, Victoria United and Orion. A public meeting on March 20, 1903 was attended by more than 1,600 citizens, and on that date the amalgamation issue was discussed and given the go-ahead. On April 14 that same year the merger was made official and Aberdeen Football Club was born.

but i dont think these were all league clubs at the time, so wont be the answer....

    TTT,

my old man was a Partick fan as a boy and wasn´t the least bit interested in sport as an adult. I can remember him watching the home internationals and that´s about as far as it got with him.

He got me an interview at Motherwell Bridge where he worked. Although I had 7 O´levels in the bag with 5 highers pending compared to other candidates prospective O´levels only I started school a year early at 4 I never got offered a technical apprenticeship only a "craft" apprenticeship. Having worked there for 10 years he realised that it was all to do with the St. before my school name.

He used to take great delight in ramming it down the orange scums throat at work as to what his BHOY was up to now ... and thanked St. Kentigern especially that his BHOY didn´t take his advice.

He died the biggest tim I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

I do not think Captain McManus was paticularly well advised to start spouting how much pride he feels about leading out Scotland tonight, it is a token gesture or more sinsterly to prevent him withdrawing from the squad with a real or fake injury.Well other teams do it and get away with it, so while he and others from the Celtic squad risk injury the mob from Govan have a night off resting and spotting weaknesses in his and others play.
Very poor preparation for a massive game at the weekend, I also felt him comparing captaining his club which he could not even mention by name and the Scotland role very poor in my eyes.

Celtic expose the Daily Record again

CELTIC today have responded to press speculation that the club are pursuing a Japanese tour at the scheduled end of the SPL term to ‘kill off’ any plans for an extension to the season.

A club spokesperson said: "Following media speculation today, Celtic would like to confirm that it has not finalised any plans for an end-of-season tour.

“Celtic have been considering a possible invitation to tour Japan and this will be looked at in further detail over the next few weeks, but no final decision has yet been taken.

“Clearly, with Celtic now enjoying great support in Japan, this is something which the club needs to consider, as it did previously when we made a similar visit.

“The club can state very clearly that any discussions with regards to an end-of-season tour have been continuing for some time and have absolutely nothing to do with any recent debate around extending the SPL season.”

ed - the first time we wore numbers on the hoops was FAR more recent than that.

    it was in mccanns era.

when the legislation came out about numbers being on the shirt, fergus had the numbers put on the sleeves... the regulations were then re-worded for the following season.

i believe that it was around 94 but i could be wrong.

I disagree, I'm extremely proud that a Celtic man is going to be captain of my nation tonight and he has every right to be proud of himself also.

I also think that tonight will be excellent preperation for our players as they play against top class opposition, it will sharpen them as Paul said and it will be a welcome change from the hard slog of the SPL. They will get more from practising against Croatia than they would at Lennoxtown. It's at home and they're unlikely to play 90 minutes so I don't think it will have a negative effect on their fitness either.

I think the last point you made is you looking for any excuse to criticise him.

    awe naw,
they will only be seperate issues if they do not clash, agreed we should be doing it legally (would be right funny if any compensation was put in the kitty for a star signing eh)
But if we had made such a statement, what could any one do about it, also it would give out a message that we are no longer willing to just bend over

Skippy :- Thanks for that re the numbers, I knew Celtic wore numbers on their shorts but didn't know if they had been worn on the jersey earlier. When it comes to Celtic I definetly don't know the history :-0

It's true there are pros and cons but we're unlikely to never know. If the Celtic men in the Scotland squad play bad against Rangers it doesn't mean it's because they played for Scotland midweek, they might be poor either way. The only way to really tell is if they look tired I suppose.

If McManus captains Scotland to a good result over Croatia it could give him such a boost for the game at the weekend, alternatively if Scotland get hammered it could destroy his confidence, or even encourage him to bounce back against them. Who knows...

Ed, Thought that I had read or was told that Bon Accord amalganated with Aberdeen, but after checking the net cant find anything about them apart from the 36-0 scoreline, also not listed as one of the 3 teams who joined to make Aberdeen.

    canamalar,

No it has zilch to do with our "prospective" Japanese tour its a point of principal. The SPL season should NEVER be extended unless it is for extenuating circumstances like the outbreak of war or illness etc. Just cos Watty is in with a chance means it shouldn´t be considered. PL issued a statement and covered this on Saturday??

Keith Jackson deliberately puts 2+2 together to make 1690 as he always does.

Know what you mean but Peter Lawell has already given a comment on the issue of extension based on confirmation fof fixtures from the SPL/SFA etc. which is the correct thing to do as it addresses the official body.

He should not respond to a rag who have an ulterior motive as in my view it would only result in further diatribe in an attempt to get Celtic to respond.

Canamalar :- Due to the set up in Scotland not all senior clubs are in the Scottish league or the SPL, A good example of this is the Highland leage and East of Scotland league clubs.

    awe naw,
I'm no arguing that point, I know PL issued that statement, what I'm saying is we shouuld give them the 2 fingers and tell them we are going on a pre-arranged tour (arranged or not) and that they have no right to alter the set-up as the prescedend has previously been set, and if they persist with touting such an idea we will challange it with all of out resources.
Its more likely jingle jangle was fishing for his master to show the SPL that we have nothing confirmed and that we can be made to look unreasonable, and we know how much PR men dislike such an interpretation of their actions,. Its simply to make PL look intransigent and take the blame off the HUN/SPL/SFA.
    innit?

bigswee, of course your right, but I can help think that such a debate would actually show the scottish hacks up properly, as I've no doubt once such a debate was opened the international press would come from far and wide to watch and report on the spectacle, and I for one think PL could actually rip them a new one and have them for libel and slander, for the moment IMO this is an untapped resource lol

  • At 26/03/08 17:08, Blogger BigSwee said…

    My view is simple.

If you good enough and in some cases lucky enough throughout the season then you deserve to win it.

A few of my mates are looking forward to the Rangers fixtures and their firmly held view is that they will have even greater bragging rights if they go on to win the championship in addition to success in the cup and in Europe.

I know if positions were reversed I would be up for the challenge and not looking for any favours!
