Reason IV not to extend the season; it would be cheating

Bearing in mind one SPL club owner claims to have 80% of the Scottish media in his pocket, it will be interesting to see how the media report and try to influence the SPL board’s decision on fixture arrangements.

The FA Premier League had four full league programmes in the nine days from Sunday 26 December 2004 to Monday 3 January 2005.

The country lived through the experience. On 4 January 2005, people returned to work, some socialised as though nothing had happened. Chelsea played games on all four dates and went on to win the league.

Rangers could be allowed the same period, Saturday to the following Sunday, to play four games; extending the league to help Rangers get ready for important games would be cheating.

Let's hope any attempt is in vain, that Celtic will be in front and clear by then.

Having said that, I'm sure tonight we'd all take going into the last game needing to achieve a bigger win than them again. To claw back the points will be quite an achievement.

    Come on the Hoops.

    Attention McGrain in Spain

Jesús Sartrústegui, immense striker for Real Sociedad when they won back-to-back titles in 81 and 82, and Joaquín, backbone of a brilliant and unfortunate Sporting de Gijón team of the same era, have apparently joined forces to promote high-quality wine.

    Sounds like good stuff.

You are in a clique by yourself with 1st, 2nd and 3rd post.

Paul67 surely after the SSM statement they couldn't or even dare to suggest extending the league. Also since the league will be split surely it must take all the teams in the top six to agree for an extension as the SPL had to get Gretna's I was going to say permission but the word Collusion fits better, first before they can postpone the game.

Say if they did extend the league would you know if Celtic are willing to take legal action and go to court to get an injuction to prevent the extention? Or will Dr Reid be set loose to influence people's decisions, he must know Ian Blair from his shooting Brazilian days.

Listened to Martin Bain talk about the various options open to the SPL re Rangers fixtures and the fact he has been involved in those discussions.

In 2003 the SPL moved forward our game with Rangers at Ibrox WITH NO CONSULTATION with Celtic meaning a semi final away tie in the UEFA cup and a game at Ibrox in the space of a cople of days.

The reason sited was police fears for crowd control.

Someone posted an excellent point the other day (i apologise for not remembering your name,av looked cant find the post again)

If the safety and control of supporters is the prority then we should have played Rangers on Sunday Apr 13th with a daylight kick off.

Instead Rangers replay Thistle that day. How very convenient,we couldnt have Rangers come back from Lisbon having to face Celtic,no move that to the night of Wednesday Apr 16th.

A simple question- if police safety consideration is paramount how can a night kick off take precedence over a Sunday lunch time kick off ?

I tried to pose this question to Clyde tonight but my irreverence for the reverend a few weeks back has me barred at this juncture.

    Cheating you better believe it.

Happy clappers, do not read this!

10 games to win the league- what a load of guff! Anyone with half a brain knows that this Celtic team does not have the stomach for the fight that lies ahead. I am seriously concerned about the points tomorrow.

From yesterday’s press conference it seems Gordon Strachan was happy with the team’s stats from Tuesday. His comments were patronising to say the least. I just hope he is showing more urgency behind closed doors. He is obviously an intelligent guy yet his own conceit prevents him from making the necessary changes to boost the team. If he picks Naka or Massimo for ibrox next Saturday then he really will have to go.

The team owe the fans a mammoth effort in terms of both discipline and performance next week. The support are really hurting at the prospect of a treble for rangers. Yet again this will more painful for the fans than the players. There was little sign of camaraderie among the players on Tuesday and this is a rangers team who, bad as they are, have the scent of victory in their nostrils.

Just a wee update for the[expanding] Carlisle United Clique on here- results so far this weekend mean that we are now 2nd, with a 3 point lead and a game in hand. There are 9 games left, and for the team with the best home record in England outside the Premiership will have 6 at home.

Promotion is in the hands of the Superblues.

Of course, the English leagues routinely play 2 games at Easter, and 3 over Christmas, something the SPL could have looked at to ease fixture congestion.

As for the Celts- not a great forecast for the weekend. Game tomorrow might not survive on a pitch with no electric blanket?

They should beat BoltonBhoy's and my favourite Spanish team tomorrow night and Real Madrid have a very tough game at home to Valencia (poor this season, but still very hard to beat in the big games) so who knows?

The gap is seven points at the moment, which is a lot, but we've seen quick swings in recent weeks and it could happen again. Next few games are:

    Betis-Barcelona
    Real Madrid-Seville

    ---
    Barcelona-Getafe
    Mallorca-Real Madrid
    ---

    Recreativo de Huelva-Barcelona
    Real Madrid-Murcia

    ----

I'd say the ones against the Seville teams will be critical, but it's also possible that Real Madrid could drop points in Mallorca as it's a tricky place to visit.

There are still three games after that before Barcelona visit the Bernabéu on 7 May, and two after that before the league wraps up on 18 May when Real Madrid will be at home to Levante and Barcelona away to Murcia.

And another other thing, while I at it...

At the Noos Conference... Gordon's Body Language, plumbed the depths of defeat..

He could barely, look his questioners in the eye.

I feel sorry for the man... he has tried his best...

On extending the league season to accomodate the huns, the fact that there was no precedent didn't stop the powers that be extending the privilege in December re the Gretna game.

That was packaged nicely in the meeja as all the lads pulling together to help Scotland's REAL (as opposed to cuckoo in the nest type) representatives at Europe's top table.

Plucky wee Gretna, in the guise of their manger Davie Irons ( 'glad to help, uncle Walter, anytime, eh, can I get your autograph for a few of the boys....?') were patronisingly patted on the head for thier sportsmanship.

We were all left open mouthed at the sheer effrontery of it all, but it still happened.

Then , of course, fate spun her wheel (casinos are dodgy things Sir Minty, best avoided) and the Horribles were put to the sword by a Lyon team written off by all and sundry in the supine excuse for a Sporting Press we suffer here.

And Gretna are now oot the gemme good , well and truly.

    It's a truism.

The SPL have already discussed this matter but have not made a decision yet, I think the public debate will be important.

St Gris, the decision has not been made yet. I have declined to criticise Lex Gold thus far, as I believe he has come under pressure and is looking for soundings.

evening all...first time Ive been able to post since tuesday evening..

came as no surprise to see the scattergun nature of the posts which ranged from the measured to the hysterical to "the skys gonna fall on my head" utterances..

on the extreme side what did we get??sack the manager..

Im no renewing my season ticket if hes still there..

    sack donati,brown,caldwell,mick,naylor,naka etc..

sack the board..the chairman and chief executive must go now..

holy goalie and aiden..you might as well go now as your both to good to be here...

sack paul 67(who one poster nearly equated to a cyberspace version of Gerry McSherry)..

sack martin 42 for having the audacity to believe we can still win the league while all others are chucking the towel in..

jeez........You would honestly feel that some people on this blog get off on us falling flat on our faces now and again...

Whatever happened to Celtic are for life not xmas..faithful through and throught etc..

Paul..you do a great job in providing a platform for all the views..keep calling it as you see it..dont pander to the middle class prawn-sandwich eating spanish golfing break types that come on here when things are going badly(but obviously wouldnt take a golfing break at aberdour I see)..

As for the team and the management I think it is obvious that an assessment of where team 3 is heading will come regardless of what happens between now and may18...but until may 18 I would urge all the support to unite and back the team and the manager because the league isnt over yet by a long way as I feel that the fixture list will have a massive part to play..

Oh aye and to finish ive got to give my support to Martin 42 as well..you also keep telling it like it is..

How are you so sure that Celtic can square the Circle?...

    You must know something,pal?

    Come on spit it out...

What is it that makes you claim that I am dense?.... is it something I said?...

    Which I probably did.

    Funny thing, though...

Although, you obviously have a different opinion from my own....

Therefore in this matter, we are in disagreement.... Fine...

    A perfectly harmless, condition...

The sun will still come up tomorrow... right on the dot...

Whether we should agree or not.

We are having a perfectly common or garden disagreement.

That state of affairs, would never in a Million Years, prompt me to come to the conclusion, that because you do not agree with my opinion, then you must be therefore... Dense!

Or, is it something I said that you did not want to hear?...

I am taking a wild guess, I know.. But I am sure it is the Latter.

    You must control yerself, pal...

A disagreement should never call for an insult...

Man... you must be more careful.

    Kojo,

Mark Sparky Hughes would be a sound choice. My own view is that it would be too early for Mowbray, Lambert, Collins and Keane.(Dermot will undoubtley want him at some stage).

I would say possibly Moyes, Hughes and Van Gaal would be in with a great shout. Dark horses i would say someone like Levein or McGhee.

Anyway all hyperthetical as "I AM STRACHAN" although he has severley peeved me off over the past year with his reluctance to drop our comedy act at the back and a few other strange decisions recently.

    Paul67,

I wished i shared your confidence as with regards the league as i think next week showdown will be the final nail in our coffin for this season.

Have you heard any snippets with regards the team for tomorrow? Will it be the usual suspects or has WGS suddenly woken up and smelt the coffee with regards his selection in certain areas of the team.

If it will be the usual suspects then that will be the majority of the team he will gp with at Ibrox next week. Everybody from their auntie including past legends or greats from our club know where the problems lie. Why doesn't an intelligent man like WGS see this?

Gordon's such denial will be beginning of the end for him.
As i mentioned the other day to a friend. When WGS does decide to call it a day and a new person finally takes over i'm willing to say that only Aiden, Naka, Scott Brown, Artur and Andreas may survive the axe. Young master O'Dea may finally get the opportunity to show his unlimited potential in his correct position.

Everybody else including our captain better start looking for another club. Tommy Gemmell was correct the other day. We have no leadership on the field. Hmmm.........!!

That statement is also mathematically correct...

I will give you an "A" for mathematics...

    Howevah.....

I still say that Celtic are now in the uncomfortable position, of HOPING SOMEONE ELSE.. shall pull their Charred Chestnuts...OUT OF THE FIRE!

Three Games against the G.A. are scheduled...

    What you are hoping for....

Is THREE GAMES AGAINST OUR RIVALS....Without, conceding a Defeat!

    I would safely say..

That is a Very Tall Order....

In light of the way that we have been very, very recently, performing... and failing to come up to the mark!

So I do not see it your way...
And you do not see it My way...

    However...

You are more than entitled to your opinion...

And, you know something..although we are in total disagreement....

I do not feel the need to Insult You....pal!

    GG @ 20:16 & garygillespieshamstring from a previous thread.

    26th January 1966 ....

Dynamo Kiev 1 Celtic 1 in Tblisi.

Some of the headlines at the time....

"Celtic Fly In And Game Goes On"

"Supporters Hit Out As Game Goes On Today"

"Celtic Fly In To 11pm Seven-A side"

"Hearts v Celtic: League Bosses Decide The Game Must Go On"

Some press reports from the time...

"We expected this. We knew the game would have to go on. It will be hard and tough but we will see it through". - Jock Stein.

Celtic came home after their hoodoo flight from Russia last night...and went out training at 11pm.

Celtic's nightmare 40 hour journey from Russia finally ended at 9pm last night.

As the travel wery team stepped from the plane at Prestwick they were told

"Your game against Hearts goes on tomorrow".

The "game-on" announcement was made by the League Management Committee earlier in the day.

From Stockholm, where Celtic were stranded overnight, team boss Jock Stein had 'phoned League secretary Fred Denovan.

He told him of the situation. But he didn't make an appeal for the game to be put off.

Jock said "we are ready to play the game if they say it must go on. The position about the match was left with them".

After a meeting at the North British Hotel in Glasgow a League spokesman said "the Celtic position was fully discussed and the committee, knowing the Parkhead party would be back home in the evening, decided the match should be played.

"It wasn't really a decision at all" a committee member told me (Hugh Taylor).

At least one reporter, Ken Gallacher, sympathised with Celtic.

    "No Welcome For Heroes"

I am bitterly disappointed that the Scottish League have not postponed the Hearts-Celtic match at Tynecastle today.

I say it is DREADFULLY UNFAIR to Celtic, heroic Celtic whose wonderful win against Kiev Dynamo made me feel so proud to be a Scot.

Only those of us who shared the nightmare trip with Celtic to Tblisi know how tired the players are.

For believe me, this was the most arduous journey any Scottish club have ever undertaken.

Nerves are still jangling. No wonder. No one can ever accuse Celtic of being cowards - their tight-lipped acceptance of brutal taclkes in Tblisi, and refusal to do anything but defeat their sometimes savage opponents by playing REAL FOOTBALL should earn them red badges of courage.

But players are only human. The alarms and set-backs of the desperately tiring flights have sapped them.

They deserve a long, long rest. They should NOT, I insist, be asked to play today.

Why, then, you may ask, didn't Celtic ask for a postponement of the game?

I say, WHY THE HECK SHOULD THEY?

What a shocking welcome home for heroes - Scottish heroes".

For the record, Hearts too played in Europe that midweek, in Spain against Zaragossa in the Fairs Cities Cup.

They drew 2-2 after being 2 down and played for more than half the game with 10 men.

    They arrived home on Thursday.

Hearts won the League game 3-2 and played with 10 men (no substitutes in those days) for most of the match.

Willie Wallace scored 2 for Hearts.

Wee (maybe leading) question for our friend Ed.
I've recently seen stuff on the blog about how Celtic were forced to play 3 games in four days, the infamous game against Hearts at Tynecastle and MON's fury about the game at Ibrox during our UEFA Cup run.
There are many other examples and I would need to defer to the Celtic historians on the site such as Martin42 and Gordon for the full list of grievances.

In the interests of fairness, and before the Sunday rags put their spin on it, do you know of any similar incidents that you can refer to where your club were put in a similar situation?

What a load of b****ks! rules are bloody rules Mr Bain. Do this crowd think they are above the law? I really hope this inspires Celtic to go on and win the League. It was performances like that, which prompted Big Jock to sign Willie Wallace from under the noses of Rangers in December 66, after Joe McBride broke his leg.

Joe was my hero at the time, and never fully regained form after the injury. But what a signing Willie turned out to be.

Where are their likes now ?

    Two points to make:

Firstly, Rangers look like having fixture problems as a direct result of their own request for a postponement of their game against Gretna to prepare for their game against Lyon. A decision requested by Rangers to help Rangers.

Secondly, this coming midweek could easily have been used to ease the congestion by arranging one of the outstanding games – St Mirren, Motherwell or Partick – for Tuesday night. Scottish football authorities chose not to do so.

For these two reasons alone there is no way an extended season should be permitted to allow Rangers yet another advantage on top of the advantage given them by postponing the away game at Gretna. By the way, this postponement gave them a full 11 days without a game in preparation for a Wednesday night game at Ibrox v Lyon. Contrast this with Celtic’s schedule leading up to the Barca game – Wed v Inverness, Saturday at Easter Road then travelling to Spain for the Tuesday game at Barcelona.

The Gretna game was re-arranged for Wed 16th January, a date which could have been used for the postponed Celtic game or the postponed St Mirren game. As it was used for the Gretna game, neither of these two other matches have been played yet.

A direct consequence of giving Rangers 11 days preparation time for their game against Lyon must not be the extension of the league program to allow Rangers an easier schedule.

In addition to the excellent article highlighting Martin O’Neill’s quotes in 2003 it leaves the authorities with a straightforward choice – retain the integrity of the league or prove Martin O’Neill correct and confirm his words as prophetic.

No - they know that they are. And they always have been. When was a major decsion ever taken by the authorities that disadvantaged them? I can't think of one in almost 40 years of watching Scottish football. How many major decisons have disadvantaged us?

The reason for so many mentions in the press of a possible extension to the season is a softening up approach. Discuss it often enought and it seeps into the public consciousness. In a week, half the country will think that it has already been agreed "for the good of Scottish football". That way the actual decison loses its surprise and effect.

Integrity and Scottish football are mutually exclusive.

I have always always put aside pragmatism and reality when Celtic meet our downstream rivals.
I believe we will beat them every game.
Of course I have experienced many disappointments even when we were heavily favoured.
But, I keep coming back and believe we will win next time around.
PT Barnum had me in mind when he uttered his famous words.
(Apropos nothing I was at the circus a couple of weeks ago and it was a fantastic show)

If anyone else does us a favour, it will merely represent an extra cushion which we will not need.

As our venerable ginger headed manager postulated, 28 points from 30 will make for an interesting climax to the league.

    Time to celebrate the resurrection.

The Man Called Hughes, is NOT of a Persuasion, that some people...Present Company... Always Accepted,of course!...that would lead...the same people to believe that he was NOT CELTIC MINDED!

It seems that that is a Vital Requirement, that a wholellllllotta people will demand, that a Celtic Manager, must have.

Although, they are making an argument against themselves, with that kind of Demand...

I seem to recall that the Doyen, of all Celtic Managers... kicked with the Left Foot!

Be that as it may... because of this little aberration ...Mr.Strachan has nevah totally won over, quite a few of the Celtic Fans.

Therefore, it makes a whoolelotta sense, that Celtic, in the Future... should seek only a Manager who enjoys ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS that will meet with TOTAL SATISFACTION with ALL OF THE CELTIC FANS.
