so if we win the champions league we should lose the SPL just to annoy them.
-
Haha doubt that's an option Pat. Anyone here already in Barcelona?
-
By the way I hope anyone there is having a good time, doubt the match will come to anything, the main focus should remain on the league and getting that automatic Champions League place. This month will make or break us in the league IMO.

Has their been any mention of Celtic's commendable initiatives to reassure the Catalans that we come in friendship?
Any coverage on the Keep Barca Clean Bags?
Any praise for the UNICEF donation?
Or would that undermine the media agenda?

Faint praise indeed.

Hail, Hail,
Don't even know if this is working..
Someone suggested complaining to the Press Complaints Commission about the Evening Times article.
Don't bother - it's a self-regulating body of the newspaper industry.
A recent study shows that around 4 per cent of complaints reach a hearing stage, never mind being upheld.
As for Matthew Lindsay, when I worked at the ET he started as a rugby/golf writer. Go figure..
Just don't buy the Evening Times, hit circulation and ad revenues if you want to make a point to a publication/radio outlet/TV outlet.
All the best to the Celts..there's gonna be a show..
And remarkably, I find myself agreeing with Kojo!!!
The away record has to change at some point..why not tonight.
Standing up..waiting for the men in white coats to arrive
C'mon the Hoops.

Usual toe-curling stuff from Broadfoot in the Herald: "Dr John Reid presented a goodwill cheque of £10,000 on Celtic's behalf for Unicef... Reciprocal acts of on-field kindness may be Celtic's only hope of salvaging their CL prospects."
How many years at journalism school does it take to learn to write so badly? It surely is not a "talent" that occurs naturally. I find this standard formula of false links - generally with a smug undertone - one of the most irritating aspects of sports journalists' style...
In the interests of balance the Herald also prints two readers letters condemning Boruc (and none in his defence). One repeats the idiotic line that because fans pay to watch a game and because players earn a lot it is OK to shout foul abuse at them all afternoon, and unthinkable that they should be so unprofessional to react in any way whatsoever.
Of course this is utter hypocricy -fans shout abuse at players regardless of how much they get paid.
It seems to me that Boruc's reaction was a bit like strikers who put their finger to their lips when they score to indicate that they have silenced the crowd. He was basically saying "OK, you shouted abuse at me all afternoon. I kept a clean sheet and you've lost. Let's hear you now!"
For those of us unable to see the game on STV (in England tonight), is it on Sky?
-
lanarkcelt
Sky sports 2 I think
-
Never really bought the Sun but on a point of principle vowed not to buy after Hillborugh.
Stopped buying the 'occasional' Daily Record after the 'Thieves' report.
Stopped buying the Herald due to unbalanced reporting that started soon after Broadfoot came on board. The only thing I miss is phelps column.
Decided to bhoycott the times a while back.
I'm a couple of quid better off a week and no less well informed!
And happier that I dont read their garbage.
As we leave them in droves they will only get worse - they know the chances of enticing us back are slim so they will just pander to the majority. They are becoming more irrelevant by the day and they are bringing it upon themselves. If they actually did unbiased and thought provoking journalism I would actually buy a paper and read it. Unfortunately either the talent for such reporting is not available or the market does not warrant it.
-
inkybhoy - thanks for the tip. Of course your good self is exempted from my comments about journos :-)
-
lanarkcelt, I believe the game is on SS2, however I thought I'd check the STV website and it's advertised as being on there! Completly free as well! I hope it is, because the away game versus Milan in the CL group stage was on for free and it was in superb quality! I hope this is a big scoop for me :-)
Paul, I hope this can be my equivalent to your Hinkel scoop for I believe I good one although slightly non-Celtic. My Dad's colleague at work who is a massive Port Vale fan, watched the recent U-19's game versus Chelsea. He tells me that Chelsea had 2 new signings from Leeds, each costing £5million. Now I checked on wikipedia recently and saw that Celtic have made several signings this season: Pavlov, Gaughan, Santonocito and if you like add the Hutch and Koki onto that list. They are all deecent young players bought for either a free or an undisclosed fee, I like the policy Celtic have adopted, we are bringing in these players who either way have a future at the club or are sold on. IMO that's the way forward, I just think that it is a bit of a unfair playing field when you think that the combined fee for these 2 youth players Chelsea have brought in command an eight figure transfer fee.

Yesterday in work, a few of us discussed Union Jackson's story about Aiden.
None of us could find where Aiden actually said he thought the Hoops were feart ae getting a right doin.
One of the number, an older cove, with near 35 years service, and a genuine Partick Thistle fan said: 'He's the worst sports journalist in Scotland.'
Not even the people we work in newspapers believe the back pages.

A message to the Celtic fans who have managed to buy tickets in Barcelona.
Well done, but the job is only half done.
The police have said they may ask people to show ID again to gain access to the stadium. And of course, if the only ID you have is an Irish or UK passport, there's a chance they will not let you in.
Please be very careful. If possible, don't show your colours until you're safely inside. Watch the drink pre-match and do your best not to draw the attention of the polis.
Good luck.
If you're in touch with any friends who are in Barcelona and have secured tickets by this route, please pass this message on.

You have it spot on. As circulation figures tumble in the old media and the current and next generation of our support increasingly rely on internet for sourcing information and opinion then they, the old media, will come to pander more and more to the lowest common denominator.
In Scotland we will see an even greater emphasis on anti-Celtic reporting not necessarily because the journalists are anti-Celtic (although some clearly are) but because they will have to play to the only constituency they have left.
It comes as no suprise to me that Celtic supporters have a proliferation of web sites and blogs dedicated to supporting the club as many now see that as the most satisfying and enjoyable way to be part of the club.
My only hope is that the circulation drop off for virtually all of Scotland's newspapers accelerates and brings their demise all the quicker.
And as for Radio phone-in shows I gave up on them a long time ago and wish every other Celtic supporter would do so as well.
A parasite can only exist if it has something to feed off and sadly there are still those willing to let that feeding take place.

I'm feeling a tadge guilty as I'm flitting between CQN and tapping out an article for the mighty Yorkshire Post as I am whisked south on the Network Express train with decidedly dodgy broadband connection.
I'm not a professional journalist, but my job occasionally leads to such work from the fourth (or is it 5th) estate! I think in the 1970s I too would have had to join an NUJ chapel to be allowed to put finger to key?
I'm just trying not to write like Broadfoot or that Evening Times guy.

Paul are the tickets in Barcelona or still in teh UK?

inkybhoy:
if you don’t mind me butting in.
Why is that so? Why has the art of journalism so declined.
You come across genuine and sincere and willing to report objectively rather than stoop to sensationalism or controversy to boost circulation or reputation.
Has the journalistic profession really become that feral, that the art of informed reporting and communication of news and atmosphere, it is now considered secondary to the ‘amoral beast’ of quantity over quality?
I used to love reading newspapers; it was a window to the world that I never knew.
Now, I rather haze out the train window in boredom than pick up a discarded newspaper and read it. To actually buy one in Scotland, that is a habit I’ve long forgotten
Now that to me speaks volumes - of the publications themselves, the ethics of the editorial team, and the abilities and morals of the journalists they employ.
With all the talk crossing the line of diminishing returns for the advertisers and the circulation figures falling, do you honestly think there is really a sustainable future for the popular media in print?
It would be sad if such a once necessary part of your day went the way of Third Larnark.
Do you think the days of a good read and enjoyable read will ever come back?

The reason papers have declined is because they are mainly owned by big companies, with multi-national interests.
There aren't many owners who actually like newspapers, with the exception of Rupert Murdoch, but even now he has a board and shareholders he is answerable to.
Say what you like about Rupe, but he knows about newspapers and has a passion for them.
Institutional investors hold all the cards and boards of directors have to keep them happy, not readers.
The bottom line is all that matters is advertising yields and cost efficiencies.
Journalists, even the good ones, are seen as a hinderance, because they keep banging on about standards of journalism and conditions of employees.
This is why so many media companies ask the public for videos, comments, etc.
They don't cost anything and fill space or airtime.
Ben Bradlee, the editor who kept faith in Woodward and Bernstein when they didn't really have much on the Watergate robbery, was asked a while ago for his thoughts on citizen journalists. He replied: 'It's a bit like citizen surgeons or citizen dentists'

Looked at the STV website and see the SFA have backed Brines, surprise surprise. Brines has made the statement that Boruc was making inflamitory gestures at the hibs fans. Waving his arms about, I think this will be used in the future to stop THG from using his arms to make saves, as this could incite rival fans to riot.
To the posters who thought it was a joke about teaching kids anti-social behavour, you may well be closer than you think.
-
The mission of the establishment is to ensure Boruc, McGeady and whoever else they perceive as a threat, miss at least one of the games against Rangers due to suspension.
-
The SFA and Brines have released a statement to say they were correct to book the Holy Goalie
Brines said: "I clearly saw Boruc make a number of gestures towards the home spectators, using his hands and arms in a fashion which could only be described as inflammatory, provoking hostile reaction from the terracings."
What an absolute Fa**y

True Tim, if that image is definitely and unambiguously from the Hibs v Celtic game this last weekend, then have you considered emailing it to the SPL/SFA (c.c. Daily Retard, Herald, etc.) for comment.
You could ask the lazy journalists to follow up and report on whatever action the authorities (don't) take against the offender.
Somehow I think they will struggle to justify that the pictured gesture is not intended to be inciteful or inflammatory, when a clap and a wave have been adjudged to be just that.
That's why we're paranoid.
P.S. Does anyone know any of the odds on Barcelona to win tonight (including correct scores)? I'm considering a wee emotional hedge bet. And I don't care how much I lose if Celtic win!
P.P.S. Would we rather be going into tonight's game with Skippy, JVoH, Brown, McGeady and Boruc or Larsson, Hartson, Sutton, Petrov, Lennon and Rab C Douglas (obviously at their peak, not now!)???

cheers for the reply, but without meaning to sound like the Third Larnark Administrator - from what you say - with ‘crass replacing class’ the paper of choice for a journalist wanting an extended career would have to be the ‘Sunday Sport’, then.

I love their pompous language: the "spectators" and "the terracings."
Spectators makes the Hibs fans whoi spent the afternoon chanting "Artur Boruc, you're a ******" sound as if they were a group of Edwardian ladies sitting under parasols, taking tea whilst watching a village cricket match.
As for the "terracings." Is this from the B&Q catalogue?

PLEASE celtic win 3 in a row
-
Why all the fuss about the authorities clamping down on Artur Boruc for attempting to start World War 3? The Celtic players and GS should just take it on the chin and not give the authorities and scumbag meeja the reaction they want.
Rather than complaining in the meeja about the fact that opposition fans seem happy to dish it out, but get really sensitive when any banter is returned by the players, just do as the offending fans do...
When any abuse is meted out by the opposition supporters to Boruc, McGeady, Naka, Broony, or any other Celtic player, said player should call over the referee and ask him to take action and confirm that the incident will be included in his match report.
If the referee refuses to take action, then the player should go to the nearest member of the constabulary and demand that they charge the offender with an appropriate public order offence. If they point out specific individuals, and other players offer themselves as witnesses, then it will be hard for the police to justify doing nothing. They will have to take statements and provide a record of the compaint to the complainant, along with a reference number.
What's more, if the game has to be stopped every time a player deems it necessary to report such a crime to the match officials or the police, then the SFA/SPL will be forced to do something about the problem of player abuse generally. And the club should keep a dossier of offenders, and perhaps publish photographs of them in the match programme and on the big screens the next time their team visits CP... identify the culprits!
Nah, that probably wouldn't be allowed, as it would be deemed as an infringement of their basic human right to break the law with impunity.
-
Inkybhoy,
In Ireland we are still lumbered with the Murdoch style Newspaper “Mogul”,
in the form of, “sir” Tony OReilly.
At present in Ireland alone he owns, The Irish Independent, The Sunday World,
The Sunday Tribune, The “oirish” Star as well as numerous local rags. He also controls large sections of the Australian media.
His control over the Irish media was frighteningly exposed when; during the recent Irish general elections he used the full strength of his empire, over 80% of national print media, to downplay all news on the recent exposure of corruption of our present Taoiseach (prime minister). One of his leading journalists, the obnoxious Eoghain Harris, was given free reign to denigrate all opposition with innuendos and verbal terrorism ad nauseam.
O’Reilly’s despicable use of the largest selling daily paper, The Irish Independent, has been used shamelessly to totally revise Irish history, to the extent where journalists (and I use the word loosely) such as Ian O’Doherty and Kevin Myers openly declare that the leaders of the 1916 rising were terrorists, indeed any person who took up arms against the British at any time during our troubled history, were cold blooded murderers and indeed, we are an ungrateful lot for not rejoicing in our membership of the British Empire. The Great Hunger, seemingly, (it was not a famine as100’s of tons of food were being exported under armed guard) was our own fault for over breeding.
Eoghain Harris’s reward was a seat in the undemocratic Irish Senate but O’Reilly’s for his cringing licking of the British butt, was a knighthood with the hope of an eventual seat in the House of Lords.
What has this to do with Celtic???
As part of his anti Irish independence/culture/Trade Union rant, he has lumped the Celtic Football club into a mix with the I.R.A., Republicanism, Drunken barroom patriots, Neds ect…
in the minds of those who don’t know better, in our fair Republic.
-
Remember folks, it's only a game of football tonight against eleven human beings, just like us. Anything can happen on the night.
Remember we did this against all the odds... and didn't they just cry about it!!!
Which of course gave our Bhoys the chance to hit back at the meeja and have their tuppenn'orth.
Same again Bhoys!
-
BigChips,
re True tims picture from Easter Road, it certainly is a still from the game, as I noticed it when it happened and actually rewound to make sure my eyes weren´t deceiving me.
Rather more inflammatory than a wave wouldn´t you say ?
-
BigchipsUK -
it is - there is video evidence to supplement it.
It would be a waste of time. The agenda against Celtic is strong this season and we are unlikely to deter it. The SFA done nothing about video evidence of teh Rangers goalkeeper fly-kicking Callum Elliot in the mid-rift - do you think they will respond to a 1 fingered gesture?
The way I see it is that we need to improve in order to overcome these sort of decisions. We had to be better than required under Jock Stein and Martin O'Neil and the same applies now.
This team has SO MUCH room for improvement and efforts are best placed on that.
Donati - needs to stop trying to half-heartedly beat players in the middle of the park.
Defence - needs new personel.
NAylor - needs to up his pass completion ratio - BIG TIME.
Hinkel - needs to learn the game here and more about his team mates.
McGeady - need to learn to get in behind without dribbling i.e pass and move, he is becoming predictable (nit picking I know)
Brown - needs to learn to stop giving away silly free kicks
-
TrueTim, if we don't challenge and put pressure on the authorities to act, and on the media to report from all sides in a balanced way, then they can continue with their incompetences with impunity.
And if we don't provide them with the evidence and ask them to deal with it, we can hardly justify complaining about it when they fail to act.
Don't simply brush it under the carpet.
-
Madra Rua,
Thank you, I have rambled on about this on quite a few occasions but you have articulated this much better than I have been able to in the past.
I'm going to 'dog-ear' your post for future reference
(did you see what I did there...?)
-
TrueTim, you obviously forgot these from your nitpicking session
Boruc- needs to stop crossing himself / waving / moving.
Hartley - needs to stop trying to look like Raven
JVOH - needs a shorter name
Skippy - needs to stop doin that screwed up face thing when one of his mates fires it down the channel only for it to go out for a throw / byekick.
Sammy - needs nice sensible black boots n´a haircut.
Sno - needs a game.
Naka - needs nothin
-
Interesting that Celtic's nine Champions' League goals so far this campaign have come from eight different players (one of whom is now strutting his stuff on the banks of the Volga).
Nakamura isn't one of them.
It means we carry threat in every department.
Be of good cheer.
Roll on kick-off.

BigChipSuk:
I agree with you totally with one qualification, we have to do it for ourselves, not expect our club to do it for us.
Now if they want to chip in at any opportune moment, well hey!! This party is big enough for the two of us.

-
Paul67,
Have we started doing anything different recently re the media policy? Does our advertising spend decisions not have some influence? Does our new chairman have fresh ideas? I hope we only grant interviews etc to those sticking to the rules we set out. Why wont the club allow unedited press conferences on its web site for all to view? This would clearly show up the offenders and the spin put on comments.
There seems to be a targetted campaign by many in the old media of our players - Aidan, Arthus, Donati, JVOH - think they must actually sit down to agree a target list. There is none of their players linked with moves, no comment on the loss of £3m Cousin fee forever or no comment of their lack of debt clarity on their recent fag packet accounts. I think our club must be hurting them with their PR/Media policy in addition to them turning up the heat as we have competition this year for the first time in 3 years.
-
Re the anti-Celtic media …
… we can hurt them on the balance sheet, the players can hurt them on the field.
Nothing else will make an impact on them. Let's get on with it.

Have a read at this utter PI*H on the setanta website
They have a new Item which looks at players currently in the spotlight
This is their comment on Aiden McGeady:
"Our latest man in the spotlight is Aiden McGeady.
The Celtic starlet is a precocious talent but is he capable of stepping up a level this week or do you view him as on over-rated trickster?
Opinion is sometimes divided on the Republic of Ireland international so let us know which side of the fence you are on".
What a lot of SHI*E
McGeady has been MOTM in almost EVERY celtic game this season
A*SEHO*ES
-
BigchipsUK - it's just a presonal thing - I don't think it is time well spent. There have been more than enough opportunities to act this year when presented with cold hard evidence and they have refused to do so.
After Rangers scored at Ibrox this season Hutton and Ferguson ran to the Celtic support and celebrated - nothing was done about this. The clearly play to a different set of rules.
My point is that if we were to get even better as a team - all these decisions would be consequential. They would have to write about us winning and Rangers being second best.
The bias amounst officials only comes into play when we are neck and neck with Rangers.
My point is that we should have not allowed them to be neck and neck with us.
Nakasleftpeg - very funny ;-). You should always aspire to be better - I am sure I am only saying stuff that WGS will be saying as well. No harm there.
-
My mates just txt me from Barca saying the touts are looking for €150 for a ticket for tonight.
In Bigchips clip at 11:31 what does the guy in the studio mean when he says Arturs guestures are usually more sinister than that?
-
Greenlion, we all know what he means, but is making a religious gesture accepted almost worldwide more sinister and inflammatory than giving the finger to the opposition support?
-
TrueTim,
the huns are back in the race after a three year absence.
They have the smell of blood in their nostrils.
Any editor in Glasgow will tell you that the huns are buying more newspapers. That´s the impetus behind the more flagrant than recently usual winalot jounalism
Last night I posted a suggestion that Celtic TV should do a weekly breakdown of the Scottish media in a weekly program.
Today somebody suggested a webcam (preferably with sound) at all press conferences.
Celtic plc would never agree to either because they are to weak or to cynical. Take yer pick ?
-
-
Greenlion, re: the ticket touts, they can ask what they want for a ticket (not necessarily legally though). And the real fans are at liberty to pay what they want for a ticket.
If you think the price someone is asking is too high, then don't pay it. If they still haven't sold their tickets 10 minutes before KO they will accept almost anything that is offered. Don't feed their greed by paying their inflated prices.
-
Shamrock @09:47.
Totally agree. Living in NI with only 5/6 trips to Cee the Celts each year I would buy the Daily Record and listen to radio phone ins daily. Stopped buying the DR after the ridiculous reporting about the players' night out in Newcastle. Tjhat left me with "Your Call" and more recently clyde 1 through the internet. Stopped Traynor's excuse for a show and have recently - this weekend - vowed not to listen to Clyde 1 ever again.
That leaves me with a few Celtic websites most notably CQN. That'll do for me.

It would seem that a certain Mr Puyol has been impressed by our passion according to his comments on UEFA.com below
For Puyol, an aficionado of British football, there will be a treat at the Camp Nou whatever the outcome. This will be his sixth chance in under five years to play in front of the Celtic supporters, and he remains in awe of their passion and loyalty. "I'd say that Celtic's fans are spectacular," he said.
