Time for the champions to stand up

Celtic must find the capability to fight for 90 minutes in each game, as though each moment was the last minute of injury time.

We must envelop Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday as though we were playing for the Champions League itself.

We must get frequent supply to the wings to gain the most from our aerial game.

We must find fire and passion, running and skill, hardness and passing, good passing, in central midfield.

Our defence and goalkeeper deserve credit for their record this season; the best in the league. They must improve.

Our exceptionally talented players must turn craft into great goal scoring opportunities.

Our movement off the ball must convince every spectator that each player has the hunger and desire to win.

Celtic Park must become an impenetrable fortress where all are cut asunder, and each away venue must become the scene of a magnificent Celtic performance.

Today, our league defence lies subjugated but not broken. Our destiny lies in our own hands, a position humanity has craved for, for centuries.

Meeting this challenge is only reason players should get out of bed each morning.

When the Celtic players and coaches look around their dressing room for the remainder of the season, they should see an unquenchable will to win. I am sure if they look to the stands they will see it from you and me.

If we do all this and still lose the league, which I do not believe for one second would happen, I will have no complaints.

We can celebrate, or mourn, later bhoys but for the moment, if I’m not mistaken, I think we’ve got ourselves a ‘square go’.

Maybe we’ll come through it winners, battered and bruised but winners none-the-less; maybe we won’t. But do you really want to be known as the one, that when four o’clock came, walked to the bus stop with the shadow of shame as his only mate. Missed the main event because you were too brown panted to face the demon of a fight?

And you dare to call yourself a Celtic supporter?

I’ve lost many a fight but always thought myself a bit of a winner, for the simple reason, come four o’clock - I always showed up.

I’d rather take a hiding fighting, than hold the hand of shame, in my fight to hide.

So excuse me if you’re not interested but I’m going to the fight. And I’m going to participate. I’m not going to stand in the circle that in its puerility chants, Fight! Fight! Fight! And never gets involved.

Naw, I’m going to be the nutter that gets stuck right in, fighting my fight, my cause, because there can only be one outcome.

And if I don’t achieve it, I’ll know at least, I, didn’t let, I, down.

Get out of your misery and get to the fight.

    Now is the time.

Can you just imagine how sweet it's going to taste when we win the league, when Craig Bellamy scored his finest Celtic goal and we went 5 points clear at the top nobody gave the huns a hope but big feckless kept them going right to the death, we are in a much better position with a much better squad. Now really is the time to Keep the Faith!!

They say the prospect of hanging concentrates the mind. This season was about winning the league. It still is.If the players believe in themselves and the manager they have nothing to fear.

I know that Rangers have the advantage at present. But winning the league is about proving we are a better side.We have every opportunity to do so over the the remaing games. This is a defining moment for this team and the manager and they need and derserve our undivided support. In this situation we either hang together or hang seperately.

ps Stoir Mha Chroi .I have been missing Kilalba`s post...I think you come from the same stable...a good pedigree indeed.

Last night all I could post about the game was Not Good Enough.

I left Celtic Park last night looking for something to kick or punch - and I'm not a violent man. I was just so frustrated that we had left two points on the park. Two points that were there for the taking. Two points that make winning the title a little more difficult. Not impossible but more difficult.

Usually when we are in the position of looking for that famous Celtic late goal we are coming close, making chances and wearing the opposition down.

I am usually an optimist in that situation. But last night from around 70 minutes onward I just had the feeling that we were not going to score.

We have two trips to Fir Park scheduled for our next two games. Assuming both happen, six points are an absolute necessity. Our team needs to stand up and show the grit and resolve necessary at this time of year.

And then we need to leave Ibrox with at least one point.

If we can do that then the run in to the title will look a little rosier for the bhoys.

I never saw the game last night. I only listened to the 2nd half on BBC Radio Scotland. Where there was almost a verbal time countdown for the last 20 minutes. Crowd seemed up to it for me. I listened to a barrage of Celtic pressure. It could be worse we could be Barcelona and losing these games. Dont ask me why but when listening to the game last night the thought entered my head that young Aiden is using Cristian Ronaldo as his role model when it really should be Ryan Giggs.

    Well It's Saturday night
you're all dressed up in blue
    I been watching you awhile
maybe you been watching me too
    So somebody ran out
left somebody's heart in a mess
Well if you're looking for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest

Some girls they want a handsome Dan
or some good-lookin' Joe on their arm
Some girls like a sweet-talkin' Romeo
    Well 'round here baby
I learned you get what you can get
So if you're rough enough for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest

    The road is dark
and it's a thin thin line
But I want you to know I'll walk it for you any time
    Maybe your other boyfriends
    couldn't pass the test
Well if you're rough and ready for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest

    Well it ain't no secret
I've been around a time or two
Well I don't know baby maybe you've been around too
    Well there's another dance
all you gotta do is say yes
And if you're rough and ready for love
honey I'm tougher than the rest
If you're rough enough for love
baby I'm tougher than the rest

Do you know what a fight is?

Another fight a lot of good guys walked to. Just in case your misery has no quantification.

Rhetoric I know, but Bright Green Rhetoric I swear. (And Proud)

Adelante was the cry around the hillside

    VIVA LA QUINCE BRIGADA

    Chistie Moore

Ten years before I saw lhe light of morning
A comradeship of heroes was laid.
From every corner of the world came sailing
    The Fifteenth Inlernational Brigade.
They came to stand beside the Spanish people.
To try and stem the rising Fascist tide
Franco's allies were the powerful and wealthy,
Frank Ryan's men came from the other side.
    Even the olives were bleeding
As the battle for Madrid it thundered on.
Truth and love against the force af evil, Brotherhood against the Fascist clan.
    Vive La Quince Brigada!
"NO PASARAN" the pledge that made them fight.

"ADELANTE" was the cry around the hillside.
Let us all remember them tonight.

    Bob Hillard was a Church of Ireland pastor;
From Killarney across the Pyrenees ho came.
From Derry came a brave young Christian Brother.
Side by side they fought and died in Spain.
Tommy Woods, aged seventeen, died in Cordoba.
With Na Fianna he learned to hold his gun.
From Dublin to the Villa del Rio
Where he fought and died beneath the Spanish sun.
Many Irishmen heard the call of Franco.
    Joined Hitler and Mussolini too.
Propaganda from the pulpit and newspapers
Helped O'Duffy to enlist his crew.
The word came from Maynooth: 'Support the Fascists.'
The men of cloth failed yet again
When the bishops blessed the blueshirts in Dun Laoghaire
As they sailed beneath the swastika to Spain.
This song is a tribute to Frank Ryan.
Kit Conway and Dinny Coady too.
Peter Daly, Charlie Regan and Hugh Bonar.
Though many died I can but name a few.
Danny Doyle, Blaser-Brown and Charlie Donnelly.
Liam Tumilson and Jim Straney from the Falls.
Jack Nally, Tommy Patton and Frank Conroy,
Foley, Tony Fox and Dick O'Neill.

Passionate observers who watch over our noble young soldiers, and aid, comfort, and encourage them in their patriotic work; bless them, shield them in the day of battle and the hour of peril, bear them in their mighty hand, make them strong and confident, invincible in the bloody onset; help them to crush the foe, grant to them and to the club and its glorious history imperishable honor and glory.

if our dressingroom/squad contains an unquenchable desire on Saturday it will be an evolution from last nights insipid , limp torpor

    re the Gretna situation

many people are getting very excited about this surely it will simply give us more points but the huns another game in hand

that being said is it really that much of a boon as surely we would have beaten Gretna anyway ie on Easter Sunday we will have no game with the huns having played a game on Saturday

On this site, I have seen the following players criticised regularly: Sno, Caldwell, McManus,Naylor,Brown, Donati and JV of H. Additionally, I have seen Gordon`s head called for. I have, COINCIDENTALLY,seen the same players criticised regularly in the media in general.I am now trying hard to think of a current Rangers player (1st 11 regular) who receives any real degree of criticism in the media. I will tell you now; it is the same number as you hear their fans regularly criticise....NONE.

    Paul,

A fine rallying call. However, I can't help feeling that our players should have had those thoughts in their heads before last night. The unpalatable truth is that today may be too late.

The question then becomes "why didn't they?"

A guy sitting near me last night was bawling, after about 20 minutes: "C'mon Celtic, how much do you want to win this league!!??" I thought, "Give it a rest mate, plenty of time..."

But by 70minutes I realised he was right. The players didn't look like they were playing as if the flag depended on it, they were flat and uncertain. They were unfocused, perfectly epitomised by Brown's ridiculous time-wasting booking in injury time.

    They were directionless and leaderless.

I'm sorry if this is out of tune with a day of Braveheart rallying calls. But it is the scary truth. It seems to me that the players simply do not want the league as much as we do.

    Again. "Why not?"

The inescapable, inconvenient truth is that our manager is simply failing to motivate and focus his players. They are not bursting a gut for him, running through the brick wall for him, going the extra Al-Pacino-in-Any-Given-Sunday inch for him...

Last night I think I witnessed the beginning of the end of Gordon Strachan's leadership of Celtic.

That, in itself, does not worry me.

What worries me is that he will leave with Them as champions.

Just as the train was about to leave my dad, who was a big Irish man wrapped his big arm around my neck and pulled me hard to his chest.

My optimism has lifted a bit more than it was last night after the game.

When you look at it, it's very much in our hands, win all our games and we win the league. It's a cliche I know but we have a series of Cup Finals coming up which we MUST win. I just hope the malaise which seemed to be throughout the team last night for the vast majority of the match is banished.

The thing that worries me the most is that it's now the middle of March and we are now nowhere nearer knowing who our strongest centre-midfield pairing is. This is the area we must sort out to give us a better chance for the run-in. My opinion, I don't have a clue!

I didn't boo last night as I don't think it's right, but it's very easy to have a go at those who did, and it was very loud for the amount still there at full-time. People get caught up in the tension of it all and are letting their frustrations out. I just wish those that did had sung as loudly as they booed for all of the game, not just the last 15 minutes!

As tooheys_new said on the last post, it very much reminded me of the Hibs game at the tail-end of the Jansen season. It's funny cos when I was leaving the ground last night I looked at the railing I punched in frustration that day which left me with 2 broken fingers! If it could have guaranteed the same end result as that season I would have done it again last night!

On the Gretna situation I think it would be an advantage if we did draw level with rangers, albeit with them having 2 games in hand. Let's ask the question of them and see if they're up to winning the two matches. It would be the first semblence of pressure they've had to face for a while.

    Paul 67,

I fear that the general wave of positive feeling following your post may be misplaced. Having been puzzled once again at the team selection and tactical decisions employed by the coaching staff last night (and for most of the season) I simply cannot see how Celtic can go the rest of this season without the regular failings reappearing. As the next 10 games have been labelled 'must win', in my opinion, these have to be won through gaining control of the midfield area and then playing our brand of football once this battle has been won. The central midfield has been an area of concern as noted by you in previous posts. The constant rotation of player in this area and the bemoaning of the inability of the team to retain possession or pass better is an admission by the coaching staff that all is not well. I do however feel that the problem is more that just the central area in terms of our style of play. The use of Nakamura, whose worth to the team cannot be denied at the right time, is becoming more of a luxury passenger as the weeks go by. His value can be used as much as a substitute either from a position of comfort in a game or as a key to unlock a door, such as last night, if needed. The one trick pony style of play from our midfield, with only Aiden McGeady performing at a consistent level, is the main reason for our obvious failings this season. At no time have we been able to put a consistent run of games together with a settled midfield. The influence that non flair players, such as Lennon and Lambert, in retaining possession and making simple but effective passes cannot be underestimated in the current midfield mess.

Turning my attention back to last night, I do find it hard to believe the reasoning, when chasing a crucial goal, that we replace the only striker on the pitch who appeared to have the desire and the first touch to make a difference. Scott McDonald for all his goals has looked both physically and mentally tired in recent weeks. The argument for a three pronged attack last night should also not be discounted, given the importance of winning our homes games. The results against Kilmarnock, St Mirren, Hibs and now Dundee Utd suggest that the European fortress mentality of the current squad does not exist at a more basic SPL level. The performance of Scott Brown last night, as for the most part of the season, was a disappointment. If this player is guided and coached properly, then his clear talent and passionate style of play can be channelled properly. Hopefully then the composure and ability to make a clean and crisp pass to a team mate will eventually become part of his armoury. I do not feel that simply spending £4.5 million on a player should justify his inclusion when free from suspension.

Unless therefore we insert a properly challened desire and strength in the central and wide midfield areas over the next ten games, then we can rest assured that we will finish second to an average and uninspiring Rangers team, whose manger has yet to revise his tactical genius in 15 years.

If Falkirk stay in the top six we would play 18 home and 17 away with rangers the reverse. We have played 14 so far with 2 against Rangers, 1 against Motherwell and 1 against Falkirk. they would only have to face us, Motherwell, Hibs and Dundee Utd. That's all being if things stay as they are.

Somehow I don't think that scenario will be allowed to play out. As you point out though it gets messy if Hearts overtake Falkirk, though I think they would be made to come to Parkhead 3 times which has happened before to Aberdeen a couple of times.

  • At 13/03/08 14:06, Blogger porridgeandbananas said…

Sorry, with the Gretna game taken away we've played 13. We would also have a home match v Hibs to play in adition to the ones I posted above.

  • At 13/03/08 14:06, Blogger Gordon_J said…

Sorry - this is the correct scenario! (Thanks Mort)

    ----------------------------------
Would Gretna going out of the league benefit us? Well it would certainly benefit Dundee Utd whom they have beaten twice!

It would make no points difference at the top, as you would assume both us and them would beat Gretna in the remaining games.

But if you assume that all Gretna matches are ruled null and void, it would have an interesting effect on the post split fixtures in the top half.

In this scenario, 30 games would be played pre-split with both Celtic and Rangers having a 15 home/ 15 away split.

Now, let's assume Celtic, Rangers, Dundee Utd, Motherwell and Hibs make up the top 5, as sees likely.

The post split fixtures would then be:

THEM: Celtic (A), Dundee Utd (H), Motherwell (H), Hibs (A)

US: Rangers (H), Dundee Utd (A), Motherwell (A), Hibs (H)

But who gets sixth place? Well, subtracting Gretna results it looks like either Falkirk or Hearts.

If it is Falkirk then they would play Falkirk away, giving 17 home and 18 away fixtures.

We would play Falkirk at home, givng 18 home and 17 away.

    BUT

If Hearts make the top six.

They would play Hearts at home, giving 18 home and 17 away.

We would play Hearts away, giving 17 home and 18 away.

So neither gives the top two an equal split of games. Given there is an odd number would the SPL just say that it was the luck of the draw, or would they muck about with the fixtures to give the top two the same split, probably to the detriment of other teams?

I think we should be supporting Falkirk over the next few games!

Looks like Gretna will not play at Aberdeen on Saturday. They are effectively asking for a postponement, which the league would probably agree to.

The spl is putting up some cash tomorrow which won't even pay all the staff wages (including players).

They will then rely on our fans to give them enough money from the game Sunday week to limp on.

This is all short term crisis management. The club is over £1M in debt and losing money every week. Unless someone with very deep pockets comes forward in the next couple of weeks, Gretna will fold.

Maybe, just maybe, we will lose out this year.
I still don't believe it will happen, but I have to admit that it is a possibility. There is no divine right in sport, or in any other aspect of life.
I love the spirit of most posters today as they/we try to WILL the outcome.
Having better players, better supporters & a better run club should be enough to guarantee our success.
If only it was that simple.
So, while I am reluctant to contemplate defeat, if it happens I will have to 'accept the things I cannot change'.
Having dealt with it over too many decades to contemplate should help.
I have seen far better teams than the present incumbents taste bitter defeat.
Recent successes should help to moderate the hurt,..but we are human & greedy. Our expectations have only been fuelled by the triumphs of recent seasons. As John Keats puts it,.. ' Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.'
Maybe we have had TOO MUCH success for our own good.
People who cannot accept defeat, don't deserve continued success.
It might do us good to contemplate the wise words of old Omar,...

You think should be able to post whatever you want. That's my view too, within the dual limits of legality and our host's in-house rules.

Surely, then, you believe Kojo should have the same freedom? Logically, that extends to him being free to tell you what you should or shouldn't post, if he feels like it. You've just done the same to him that you're complaining about him doing to you. There's a lot of that on here...

None of which, of course, is to say that you have to pay a blind bit of attention to him - or me, come to that.

The Gretna situation I think is a red herring. The administrator's responsibility is to minimise the losses of the creditors.

Consequently, they would not wish to fulfil the fixture this week as it would involve losing money having to pay players, logistical costs in getting to the game and then no receipts as it is an away game.

They then sit tight and put a team of unpaids (players will play to show themselves to new clubs) or youths against Celtic when they will be guaranteed a reasonable gate from our fans and rubber neckers wanting to see their last game and of course the TV money.

This is when it gets intersting. Given that will be the last time they play us and Them they will make losses for the rest of the season and the administrator would view that this would be the most appropriate time to shut the doors.

Thereby making all games null and void and our only carry over would be injuries, tiredness and suspensions.

Consequently, the SPL should be strong (stop laughing at the back) and insist that they have a commitment that is they allow the postponement of the Aberdeen game then all future games will be fulfilled. If the administrator agrees to this then it will be legally binding on the Administrator and his firm not Gretna.

    I wait with bated breath.

Caught the second half of last night's game. Where's the urgency and passion? I'm not talking about a headless chicken urgency either.

We need an urgency to get on with the matter at hand and that is winning.

Two things stuck out last night, Aiden son you have immense talent, but I'm afraid you are falling back on old habits, trying to beat a man or men when you should pass and making attempts at goal that were never going anywhere.
Scott Macdonald you are a goal scorer let someone else carry the ball, you cannot run through the opposition with it.

From what I could see last night DU never really threatened unless we threw up posession in midfield, so why did we not go with three up front and three at the back, it seemed the right time to do it.

Anyway, we will still win the league.

Artur - didnt have much to do

Hinkel - looking fitter by the game and unlucky not to score

Naylor - Played wth heart and looking more solid

Caldwell - Solid enough and kept passing simple

McManus - defensively sound but lacked leadership and didnt assert himself on the inefficient/ineffective midfeld

Sno - He is young , and youth brings inconsistency (some of the bloggers need a reality check on the expectations of our younger players) - good effort but didnt gel as much as previous games

Brown - Should have been pulled off at half time and replaced by hartley/Robson. Brown runs and runs and runs - we need more intelligence

Naka - put in some nice crosses from the right - but last night he would have been more effective in the middle linking with sammy and the midfield

McGeady - tried too hard at times - his crossing was rushed. We are asking/depending too much of him.

McDonald - worked hard, frustrated, complaning, nothing going for him, selfish - should have been replaced with JVOH

Samaras -i like his footwork and his areal threat. didnt get much service - would have liked to see hime with JVOH to get on the end of some of the crosses.

Referee - Had a very good game (surprisingly)

Strachan - Poor line up, slow to change it and made the wrong changes. At the end of the day , our second team should beat Dundee Utd who dod not threaten our goal much

Support - Quiet until the last 115mins - a bit like the players!

this far into the season - i get the impression WGS doesnt know his best team!!

    hail hail

Should Gretna contrive to have this weeks match v Aberdeen postponed, in order to limp on for another week to screw money from the Celtic support, then I think the SPL should resign en masse, with this year's competition rendered null and void.

Which would obviously mean that there would be no new champions declared this season and the flag will remain at Celtic park until it is contested again under the auspices of a revamped SPL.

The final league placings from last season will provide the entrants for next year's European campaign.

Sounds fair to me. Anyone agree?

You can throw as many statistics about referees as you like. The bitter pill to swallow was that we allowed that game to happen to us.

Country Bhoy, aye. There are plenty of reasons to extrapolate form and come to a disappointing conclusion.

But it is not too late for form to change.

We will have plenty of time to consider the valid points you have made, but I cannot focus on that debate right now, I just want to get the team on the field against Motherwell on Saturday.

Kojo, my friend, leave it to me and my other 60,000 friends.

We have a league to win, there’ll be a flag awavin’, awavin’. :-)

Jamie, don’t you know, we all think of ourselves as logical, and we are all honest.

As for the GoD (I knew someone would not be able to resist a go about this one today); I said at the time this was predicted (when we were on our way to losing the league the last time) that we would lose the odd league, but would win the considerably majority for around 15 years from 2000.

I still believe we will, notwithstanding a poor return this season – so far.

The SPL might well be about muscle before flair, but it is not arrogant to say that winning it is about money first and foremost, this is an honest and logical fact.

Even I attested that we had no better than a 50/50 chance of winning the league this season due to the money Rangers spent in the summer.

    Yours in logic.

It is impossible for me to even try to argue against "your being true to yourself" explanation.

However, the finality of your throwing in the towel, to me anyway, and to others, many of whom ask "WHY" is puzzling.

I, and others on this blog are amazed by your statement.

No one on this site is saying that we CANNOT LOSE THE LEAGUE.

We are all too well aware that the final outcome of this seasons campaign, MAY not go our way, but very few of us will have come to any other conclusion with 10 games still to be played.

Be true to yourself, by all means, but to throw in the towel just now, when our opponents are doing much the same as ourselves and managing to scrape wins, is to many of us, unthinkable.

    STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS,

    Martin.

Last night was depressing. I think overall we played quite well, the defence was fine, we pressed well enough and we retained possession brilliantly. We really lacked a cutting edge though which was so frustrating and certainly cost us. The addition of Jan made a difference even if he did miss a sitter and should have really been on from the start. McDonald was awful last night again and probably should have been subbed, he's had a brilliant season but in the last month he's really started to drop in form. Samaras even though he wasn't really doing much himself deserved to stay on.

With the exception of Scott I think everyone was above average but no one excelled. Naka was probably our best player with all the good play coming through him but he could have also done better. On another day we could have won more than comfortably which makes it all the more frustrating.

We had 9 straight wins in the league before last night and that featured some pretty impressive performances. Sadly because of December we couldn't afford any slip ups anymore and that meant pretty much going undefeated until the end of the season and that was always going to be difficult. I'm worried that last night has blown our chances of winning the league. I'm not throwing the towel in and I'm still hopeful but I'm more hopeful than confident now.

I'm also quite worried about the self-confidence of our players. When we lose as we seem to struggle to recover. Barcelona has probably done more damage to the players’ mentality than expected because leading up to the first leg they were flying and the self belief was high but now that arrogance has vanished. This is probably down to the average age of the squad being quite young.

The team reminds me of the Man U team from a couple of seasons, the one which was pretty inconsistent with key players getting slated and people questioning whether Fergie was still up to the job – the following season they came back flying and the young players clicked and have been sensational ever since. I’m hoping that will be the case for us as we do have a very young inexperience squad (with plenty of talent though!) but I’m not willing to discount this league just yet.

I will say this though...we have entered a generation that has the poorest support in our great history. We may have had less numbers at games in the past but I'd be happy to go back to a core of 20,000 that consistently backed their team. Win, lose or draw.

My belief that we'll win the title is no longer 100% but my support is total.

Fine words, Paul. Ones I'm sure will be echoed by every Celtic supporter.

However, with so much to play for, it is deeply disappointing that they are needed at all.

The most worryinging thing about last night is that we had a chance to turn up the pressure on our rivals and failed to execute.

We now cannot afford to drop anymore points in our remaining games and that includes beating Rangers three times, which will be by no means easy.

If the manager and players can pull this one out of the fire they will have helped heal some the pain from Black Sunday and be lionised in the annals of Celtic history.

As Martin Luther King once said:"the true measure of a man is not where he stands during moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands during trial and controversy".

Now is indeed the time to stand up and be counted.

Paul you state "Time For The Champions To Stand Up" unfortunately if we had stood up the first 28 games we wouldn't be where we are today! Yes, all we have to do is win our last 10 games but given the present sides inability to produce consistent and flowing football performances we have to hope a dramatic collapse over on the south side helps our cause! Lets hope that starts tonight, continues on Sunday and then Hibs, ourselves and the arabs do it again. If they get through that period then they will have proven a lot of us wrong on here despite us all saying their crap and we have a better squad. You can say we have under achieved from the manager to the players or our buys weren't good enough or has the managers luck finally run out on him?? We can only hope and pray we do get our act together and in fact win our last 10 games proving we are the better team and squad!!

I have been travelling all day and so I've had no time to read any of the contributions on CQN (apart from Paul's own article).

Last night was very frustrating. If Naka had scored early on, we would probably have won by a barrell load. Now, we will be fortunate to keep the Championship. The only one who looked out of sorts to me was Scott MacDonald, although he probably would have put away the chance that Scott Brown should have presented with after about 10 minutes. Some of those behind me in 109 were loud in their condemnation of Aiden McGeady, yet he did contribute some lovely stuff.

I know it is daft trying to preempt the manager, but I would drop both Scotts for the trip to Motherwell and go with JVOH and Samaras up front and Barry Robson and Evander Sno, who also looked very awkward at times. He can make the telling pass.

*exactly and just what I said a day or so ago. Ironically the manager who said "For the good of Scottish football" was first tae bail oot and is now with Morton, pity it's between them and the Bully Wee to see who joins the Binos in relegation.

Nobody jumped intae help us when we were staring administration in the face, in fact the country was probably hoping, (I could have said praying but heathens don’t pray) for it. How coincidental that the bank that wanted tae pull the plug on us is propping that other scabby mob up and the accounts manager at the time was a close friend of moonbeams.

Naw it was tombstones on the front pages of the tabloids, well done tae the Bunnet for dumping them.

When we were almost relegated back in 47/48 the Dundee side we defeated tae stave that off were on unusually large bonuses to defeat us, the fighting Celtic spirit saved the day then, pity it wasn’t around on Black Sunday never mind now.

Nobody stepped intae save the Bankies when they went under or the side that replaced them Airdrie who also went tae the wall because of 30 grand (there's that magic number again) that was owed to the Grand Wizard of Govan. Nae britherly love there. Thought they were supposed tae help each other.

Nobody stepped in tae save Third Lanark who were managed at the time by a former hun and national team captain.

This is the same Thirds that were one of the founders of the SFA and who probably have their name on the Scottish Cup unlike the pretenders tae the throne of Celtic adversaries who only took that mantle fae the Hi Hi when the Harland and Wolfe boat crossed the Irish Sea.

So why should we, Celtic, be the saving face of an institution that doesn’t have our best interests at heart, administrators, they couldnae run a fricken manage.

If this game on Easter Sunday goes ahead what do the fhans do, do they boycott it leaving the team without their support, the away support that has proved to have been a 12th and 13th man to the side.

I’m a great believer in Karma, you know what goes around comes around, and wouldn’t it be so ironic that for the whole of Holy Week it buckets down and the game is postponed.

Wonder how Rowan fae Alexandria is feeling the night.

BTW WG hate tae be pedantic but the Bachelor Bhoy song actually goes like this:

    When I was young my father said son I have something to sayaaay;
    And what he told me I’ll never forget until my dying day;
    He said son you are a Timalloy and that’s the way you’ll staaaay;
Loyal and bold to the green white and gold until you’re dying day

    burtbacharachcsc

And on this flavour of rallying songs here’s one that I’ve posted before, it was originally penned by a couple of jeelyeaters back in the days in the wilderness between the 7-1 gemme and the return of Jock:

    “As I was walking doon the Gallowgate;
    The doors and windaes opened wide;
    You can hear the mhen and whomen shout;
    See the Celtic team run out;
    Here are some of the bhoys;

    So if you go tae Hampden Park or ibrox;
    To see again the bhoys in white and green;
    We won’t shout out God save the queen;
    We’ll give 3 cheers to the young Celtic team;

    So don’t be too hard on the young Celtic team;
    Give honour where honour is due;
    And don’t forget that in days gone by;
They were as gallus as you and I………”

We huffed we puffed and we failed to blow the house down. Sad but true. We suffered from an absence of guile and composure. Felt the likelihood of a disappointing end in my water from the moment Naka hit the post early on. Had he scored there would have been no need for the weeping and wailing and the ralying cries. He didn't however and so we are left with what might have been - sadly.

My head and my water tells me that we are fated to endure a league win for Rangers. My heart of course will hope and pray and shout and scream for another romantic Celtic story snatching victory from the jaws of defeat but as Paul has said that will need a communal effort and a demonstrable will to win from everyone associated - players mangement supporters, fans, mineshafters, happy clappers all.

My greatest sadness was to watch Aiden Mc Geady revert to all of his worst traits in trying to rescue the situation when a cool head was needed, though he was not alone in that. The same charge could be levelled at JVOH Scott Macdonald Naka and Scott Brown who has failed miserably to deliver what I hoped he could bring to our midfield - drive and dig. Sad to say he has also reverted to all of his poor traits as the pressure has mounted and it is only when I can re-assure myself by reminding myself that he is a young man that I hold back from joining those who would move him on.

Evander Sno? For what its worth I'm also in the camp that feels we'd be fools to let him go at this stage. He also is young but there is a reservoir of talent and presence there that encourages me. The one thing he does not lack is the ability to retain possession when needed and less often than most does he fail to find a team-mate.

Lke others I think Gordon got it wrong by substituting Sammi and not Scott Mc Donald. It worked on Sunday so why not last night? Had it not worked Sunday of course there would have been just as many suggesting that Gordon got it wrong then so who's to know?

Scott Mc - looks to need a rest but the width of a post on Sunday and last night illustrates why we might be reluctant to see him out of the side but I would expect to see much less of the tired attempts to win penalties and mouth off at decisions for the sake of it.

Mr Mc Curry? I've moaned about him being either biased or incompetent before. On last night's evidence it must be incompetence as he had good reason to book Scott Mc amongst others and didn't. Still doesn't excuse his blatant bias every time he refs a Rangers match though.Have I just contradicted myself?

Good to hear the rally cry of 'Keep the Faith'. Our situation is not ideal but is no way hopeless. Others might of abandon hope (ye of little faith) but as long we have a chance I still believe we can do it. And if we don't it might be the end of the 'Generation of Dominoes' but it is not the end of the world, that comes on the 9th of October 2011, around about 9.30am on a sunny Sunday morning, more on that later.

Couple of observations about last night, Samaras and Skippy's styles are too similiar and should never start together, Robson is not a centre midfielder and should play on the wing. I think Skoosh should be drop his link up play is atrocious, he hangs on to the ball too much and ends losing it all the time. I have to disagree with those posters that thought Sno was awful last night, in a poor midfield last night he was by far the best, his passing is more direct through the middle, I keep saying it the lad has a lot of potential, he is only twenty years old.

After the season that Aiden has had he was allowed last night to have a dip of form. It reminded me of where he was at as a player two years ago, but as they say form is temporary class is permanent and I believe he is class. Defence played well and Hinkel looks to be the real deal.

I see Mr Strachan fell at the third today at Cheltenham, it was bad last night, Cheltenham is not making it any better. I am hoping the last race 'the Bumper' that Genuine Pearl comes in for me and cheers me up or it is back to the bhoat to drink whisky and yell at the ducks on the canal all night.

    My dear,dear, friend Derbybhoy...

    Speaking of Rev.McCurry.

No, you did not contradict yourself....you are in the unusual situation of being, as they have been heard to say in downtown ancient Roma.... correctus sortus!

The Rev. had a fair to excellent game last eve...
He was fair to the point of being surprising.

I had not the slightest complaint or puzzlement in reference to any of his refereeing decisions...except...well.... the two times that he was...to put it mildly... exceedingly, benign in his eschewing to to book the frustrated Mako...for his...that is Macko's... Blatant dive in the Penalty Box...and the Brown incident.

The "Sortus Correctus" part of your conclusions... will surface. when we meet our savage foe, should the dear Rev. have that refereeing appointment.

Then we shall see the true Rev. with his bigotry overt and aflame, in all its glory.

As I said ,you did not contradict yourself per se...disregarding his unusual sympathetic behaviour concerning the Dundee United game...the true Rev. will appear, in our next game with our rivals that he officiates ...and it is almost a given that he shall be given... that refereeing obligation to fulfill.

    Kojo.

I'm not having a nasty dig. Dominance to me = trophies
Generation of dominance = ten in a row!!

I have higher expectations I guess.

The point I am tryng to make is the trophy count is not good enough. And if we continue patting ourselves on the back, disaster looms.

Rangers spend in the summer was larger but we have nearly matched them in the window overall.

Our team is LIGHTWEIGHT. Every player has some sort of question mark still over them. That's the psychoLOGICAL problem we have. Lack of mental and physical muscle.

Its a simple one for me. No flag this year, strachan goes down as average manager

    hi paul. fellow celts.

my we are making it difficult for ourselves. i still stick with my original statement that we have far superior players to them. so what is wrong ? for my own tuppence worth, we are too soft. we witnessed the difference last sunday at ibrox.walter smith showing his aggression, and will to win. that part of his make up is also instilled into his team . god how we laughed at his investment in at best average journeymen, but journeymen with bottle. he also brought a billy boy up from fulham, who if he cant play, his hatred for us will drive him on to get stuck into us . and i know they will get away with things we wont no doubt about that. we have some excellent players , naka a joy to watch ,and what an asset to have in your team IF YOUR GOALS UP. the bhoy does not have the where for all to get stuck into cueller, weir, broadfoot, etc. i only mention naka as he is a very special talent , who is lost to us depending on the type of match, but there are others who dont like the fight .and that for me is our problem . every team who has had a go at us ,have run us close. i am not alone here, we stand or sit at our end of the ground wondering what celtic we are going to get today. aberdeen was a classic example .that was like the celts we want to see MORE of. last week back at aberdeen my god what happened there. reading the posts last night ,we had posters wondering if dundee utd would play their strongest team , will they have one eye on sundays cup final, those posts, and i am not having a go at the authors here, were imho born from a lack of confidence in our team . we should be able to beat dundee utd with them playing their full playing pool.st mirren gretna, falkirk , inverness , kilmarnock , the same but they all gave us a hard time, because they had a go. at ibrox they just set out their stall to bully us and with the help of their pastor pal they did. we have ghuys on here who can see, nor hear, any criticism of the hoops . to them my respect. but i do see our faults and i wish to god, the people who can do something to rectify them did as well. then maybe the title has a chance of staying home.

From now till the end of the season we have to pick players who are on form.

No more of this Naka and Brown etc play every week. If you play well you stay in.
Things are too close to hand it away because GS has favourite players who have produced in the past.

Another point about the recent crowds.
Could the club not offer incentives for people to use the season tickets even if they themselves can't go?

I know for some the midweek games are impossible.
If the club gave something small like a £10 voucher off the Celtic shop at the end of the season if the ticket has been used at every game, it might get a few extra bums on seats.

pretty much my sentiments exactly , except that the key issue here is not , I think, whether the players want the league as badly as we do but whether they want it as badly as THEY do.

Like almost everyone else posting last night mine was a bit of a rant but in the cold light of day maybe , just maybe last night will have given us enough of a fright to drive us on to enough of a run to see us home.

My worry is that the last time we won a close run league was 11 years ago.Since then the league has been won or lost by us by big margins except 2002/2003 and 2004/2005.Our stomach for a close fight hasn't been successfully tested since 96/97.

Yes weve just made it a hell of a lot harder for ourselves -- yes we might have handed them an irrecoverable advantage but does that mean I'll support the team less / not go / boo?

    No chance.

McCurry confined himself to little niggling unfairnesses all night. The corner he failed to give was just one of these. There was a blatent, obvious foul in the first half in perfect Nakamura territory that he denied us, and our players were being unfairly muscled off the ball without punishment.
The only favour he did us was in not booking MacDonald for what looked to me like a dive in the box. Did he really think that this man would give us a penalty!

Was horrified at first last night but over the last 24 hours I've calmed down a bit.

It was going to be a mighty task to overcome a 4 point gap (a 2 game swing) but, in reality, a 6 point gap is still a 2 game swing! It just leaves us less wiggle room! We need to take 7 from them - as a minumum.

It will be a special one if we do!

I'll keep my detailed season long analysis until after it's all over but we need to play a midfield 4 and stick with it (only change would be to sacrifice Nakamura at Ibrox). For me it's McGeady, Hartley Brown and Nakamura with Robson the stand in...forget about the other 2. Up front, Samaras has quality but he's not a frontman so it's either change from 2 up top or JVofH starts every week...I'm intrigued by the possibility of a 4-3-3!

    argh!!!!!

Dundee United are 3rd in the SPL and have clearly been coached by Levein to the point where they have a very solid defence - they came for a draw last night and got it

We created numerous chances and if any one of them had been finished off United would have had to push forward and we would probably have scored again - this is more or less always the way for Celtic in the SPL and will no doubt continue to be

I was also disappointed last night with the substitutions - I would have put Robson on for Brown and left the front two as they were

I am still very hopeful that Celtic will win the league - the squad of our city rivals is starting to be very stretched already and they have at least four very tough games ahead of them - my prediction - Celtic will win a further 26 points - our city rivals will win 20 - league won on goal difference - sweet!

I know what you are saying in that games in hand have to be won and the fact we would not have to play Gretna is an advantage because we cannot then slip up. However my point was that although it is a slight advantage to us it is not the perceived advantage the media are going with and as I said it is the equivalent of us playing Gretna today and winning. Although it would be a game out of the road it is no big advantage for us as it would be an expected win. (However what happens with goal difference and the fact the title might go to goal difference. God I would pray for that just now!!)

    Georgiebhoy
You can’t knock my stats down with league standings because 1) we are in 2nd place just now and 2) the league hasn’t finished yet so you can’t put down my argument based on this season’s stats.

What if we finish 2nd this year? Will you through that stat at me?

    Mackybhoy
I stand by Strachan should have been sacked after Artmedia and watching him stand in the dugout with his arms folded for goals 3/4/5 against a poor team who we have ill-prepared for was enough to say he was out his depth. (At least initially). That to me is good enough reason. Some might see that as unbelievable but I believe in business you have to make the right decision no matter the consequencies and the fact that it highlighted it was the wrong decision in the first place would have been enough for me for it to be the correct decision. I understand that some may disagree and that is their privilege but I do take exception to being called a follow follower. I am hurting today (just as everyone else is) but because I have a different view it does not allow me to be described a hun and again highlights the fact that so many on here and other Celtic forums have this agree with me or else attitude.

You said that Strachan is trying to get Celtic class defenders. No excuse for not having the personnel after 3 years in my opinion and you also say Celtic support should give him time. I think many (unlike myself with my above comments) have given him time and 3 years is quite a long time in Football Management.

    All
I don’t know how many times I have to post re the post split. Maybe people disagree with me and don’t read my posts. We will play 3 home games and 2 away games post split and Rangers will play 3 away and 2 home. This will not change and is guaranteed so please do not put up any alternatives. I’ve explained before and will do so again if anyone wants me to replicate. Also we want Aberdeen (or Falkirk to a lesser extent) to pip Hearts to 6th spot as we will have to go to Tynecastle while Rangers would have to go to Pittodrie. The post split fixtures will make no difference if Gretna are finished.

We can have all the online rallying calls we like, but unfortunately, here's not where it can make a difference. Last night, I was disgusted by the support. Only around 35-40k in attendance, and those that were there only offered some support in the last 5 mins. If that's the best support in the world, I'd hate to be amongst the worst...

Unfortunately, my God do we need some support just now too. Rangers are mince, they play anti-football and even their fans are upset are their play this season. However, they're set up in exactly the sort of shape we can't deal with. Due to our lack of bottle, we've spurned 2 chances to pull a gap and make them play catch up (Dec and last night), so we'll be going into the games against them chasing points.

This will play into their hands big style. You can be sure they'll sit in as deep as possibe, with no reason to come out at all. As we've already seen by the dropping of 8 points at home, we can't deal with this and our manager is too stuborn to change our shape to do something about it.

With this in mind, I foresee a big struggle between now and the end of the season. Every team is going to camp it out in their own box, knowing we don't seem to be able to up the tempo and break them down. If Saturday's game goes ahead, the poor weather and awful pitch will make the game a battle - and on last night's showing, a battle is not something our players seem to have the stomach for...

Something else that occurs to me about last night is the dreadful form of Scott Brown. He was very poor. He takes the ball and it never quite seems under control. It's just a bit too far in front, or he overruns it a bit or it's bouncing awkwardly. Then someone comes and takes it off him, or he hits a doomed forward pass or a scuffed shot.
    What has happened to him?

I take it as read that they will win every game bar the four games against Celtic.

I only think about what Celtic do, how they play, whither they win, lose or draw.

I never make excuses, the players who play should always be good enough to take us to victory.

I still believe we are good enough to beat them in the 3 games we have to play them, and as a consequence, go on to retain our Championship.

You're a bit hard on the crowd I think. Better to berate those who couldn't be bothered turning up than those who did. There were more than a few attempts to lift the atmosphere throughout the game and we really tried to roar the team on, not just for the last 5 minutes, but for at least 20 minutes to half an hour. The team have a part to play too and one should feed off the other so to speak.
Those who booed at the end though let down themselves and the team.

I've been crying all day and trying to think of a positive spin so here goes.

I think it is fair to say that if it goes to goal difference then we will win the league as we have more home games and we have to beat the huns to come back therefore beating the huns will improve our goal difference and impact on their's.

Assuming the huns win all their games outside the 3 with us then before last night we would need to win 2 and draw the other. This would give us a 6 point swing and therefore win the league by 2 points.

After last night we need to win 2 and draw the other and this would make us win the league on goal difference therefore last night has not made us any worse off.

In fact we will have a more focussed team who believe they have to win the games against the huns even more so now.

Therefore we are better off after last night. Also when you add in the fact that we will play Gretna next week with them without many of their players then we can add to our goal difference by winning 7 or 8 nil.

So a great 24 hours for us.

Rangers are sitting far too deep and it's a risky tactic. Bremen are getting plenty of room to attack and Diego is likely to conjure something at some point. If they get one goal then Rangers are going to be under severe pressure. They don't look like they're interested in scoring themselves.

    My dear friend,Tonybhoy @19.34.

I have read what you have just written, with interest.

It states your thoughts very clearly.

I do find a fair portion of your personal observations, as mentioned in the text,to be at odds with my own personal views.

    However...

You are merely stating your own honest opinions,in retaining which ,you are more than entitled to espouse.

If you do not mind,I would like to say this....

Do not be so hard on yourself..

I do not believe for a moment that your stated views could never be interpreted as being in accordance in your having a sympathetic allegience, to our rival.

And if anyone dare accuse or even hint at you having such an allegiance... tell me who... and I will deal with them summarily...

Keep on telling it like you see it,pal...

That, is what makes this Blog so Superior to any Other..

And we want to make sure, that it stays that way!

    Kojo.
    yer pal....who thinks yer swell.

    0 - 0 HT in Bremen.

One sided game but no goals so far. McGregor has made 4 good saves and Bremen have also missed a couple of very good chances.

At least the German keeper hasn't had anything to do.

    My dear,dear,dear friend... Martin

It is a well known fact,pal..that you and I are Pinkety, Pinkety on all things...

We have had enough cyber conversations to prove that point...over and over.

This lapse in our integrated opinions ....which I have caused..is merely....wella... a lapse.... a slight divergence... a trifle.

It is an unfortunate happenstance...and, as you are well aware, these pesky happenstances...wella.... happen!

I hope it does not have any repercussional reverberations, in our friendship.... I know emphatically ...it will NOT...from my side of the room.

I hope that you are of like mind.

    Kojo.
yer pal... who has just been reminded by Mabel....
"Hey, Boss! We're all outa Fresh Towels....where did they all go?"

I haven't the the heart to tell her!

don't really care if they proceed against Bremen, plus side, more games for them to worry about, more uefa co-effecient points for us blah blah.

What is worrying me more, is how well they're defending. They look strong, and I don't have a good feeling about our games against them.

    Paul & SMC

Hats off to you great start to the thread.

    Great point too iggyplopper.

That's as far as I've read so far - I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with the blog!

    Anyway here's my thoughts

I was as disappointed as anyone last night and what gets me most is the inability to break teams down. We seem so predictable at times and nothing ever seems to come through the middle. This makes us easy to defend against.

I thought Scott Brown was our weakest link last night. I also cannot believe that JVoH never started. Scott McDonald and big Jan should be the starting two if fit, with Samaras as the option off the bench depending on how the game is going.

On the crowd last night - I thought last 25 mins was amazing. The best atmosphere at CP I have seen in a league game for a long time. Just a pity we couldn't roar that ball over the line. BUT I still couldn't believe some people were leaving early.

I don't have the answers, I wish I did BUT I will never give up. The same attitude as you are both talking about in your posts.

It is imperative that EVERY supporter / fan keeps and adopts this attitude until the end of the season.

We all know the worst case scenario. Disappointing and annoying as it would be it will not change my love of CELTIC. I will be all over the world to see them again next year and every year after that... WIN LOSE or DRAW.

    KEEP THE FAITH

Pure backs to the wall stuff from the Fod. Werder have tried to break them down and have had about 8 corners so far. The Fod seem comfortable enough, with McGregor pulling off save after save when called. Werder still think it’s only a matter of time before they score, and so it should be. A quick goal and it will indeed be interesting to see how W.Smith reacts. The ref is ok, Adams has already been booked and McGregor spoken to for time wasting.

Come on the green and white

    Awe Naw

I think I might have got my time zones wrong. I remember watching the penalty shoot-out in Victoria Station in London, I think, just after 10pm. (I had assumed there was a two hour time difference BST/CET I'm told there is only one hour). Nicol missed the first penalty (I was so happy for him)

On tonight's game - you've got to hand to them. They have turned their niggling brutality into a subtle art form.

The answer to my second question was that these are all the teams that suffered the ban on English football post Heysel. The number is the number of times that they qualified for Europe during that period.

Up until last night i was adamant that we would see 3 in a row.
Im not so sure i can kid myself on anymore.

We have nothing in the middle of the park and dont seem to have enough heart.

Not at all happy considering this is an extremely poor rangers side.

Unfortunately they seem to want it more than we do.

    Whats the situation with Hartley?

Possibly the only central midfielder at the club worth a start. Is he injured?

    My good friend Kojo,

As you have oft said, this hallowed blog thrives on different opinions.

And we, you and me, know how to conduct ourselves when our opinions differ.

Best buddy, go tell Mabel what you did with the towels, otherwise I will have to tell her for you.

And be a man, take your punishment when it comes.

There is still two wheels on my wagon and we're just rolling along, the Indians have not caught us yet.

    Martin.

    radical thinker...

can't believe you'd start with JVoH before Samaras; Have just watched Dougie Donnelly's brief highlights of last night's game, and JVoH did what he's been doing all season - occasionally getting on the end of a cross, but failing to hit the target.

Sorry, but just too powder puff.

20:24, Harry's hoody - just thinking the opposite - they have offered up 3 or 4 excellent chances to Werder - also when they hold the edge of their box they are vulnerable to the slower, flighted ball , no-one picks the runner - made for Naka's control

For those now pointing fingers at S Brown they should remember that under G Strachans tenure many players have underperformed in comparison to previous clubs. This seems particularly true in the case of midfielders.I have said many times that the shape and tactics of this coach have placed an impossible burden on our centre mids.
The football served up for half of last season and this season has been pretty dire with the odd exception. At the first real sign of a challeng our coach has been found to be sadly lacking.
We have by far the best squad of players in the SPL so the only conclusion i can come to is that the coaching and motivation of players is not up to standard required.
Still hoping for that i,m proved wrong and the Bhoy,s will come through but my head seem,s to be winning over my heart.

Cubist F... would love to agreee.. they might look 'vulnerable' but they've now played 140mins of football against a top German without conceding.

They're limiting the Germans to shots from distance, and on McGregor's form......:(
