10 man Motherwell win at Celtic Park

Motherwell led for almost an hour at Celtic Park and for most of this period played with only 10 men; however, an anaemic Celtic not only failed to score, but were comfortably accommodated by the Motherwell defence all afternoon.

The game opened positively enough for Celtic with Scott Brown in particular impressing, but Motherwell stuck to their task and Celtic were unable to craft a genuine chance.

Simon Lappin scored the only goal of the game after Artur Boruc’s save from a Marc Fitzpatrick shot bounced back into play. It was the only clear opening of the game and despite having ample time to recover their game; it was evident that early that Celtic were in trouble.

Samaras replaced McDonald after an hour and Robson came on for Donati ten minutes later to no effect. Ben Hutchinson made a three minute appearance towards the end and played most of that time alongside Boruc, who came forward for a corner kick and stayed up in search of an equaliser.

Celtic started the day still with a real prospect of winning the league, but if they cannot beat a 10-man Motherwell team at home their chances of winning the stiffer tests that are to come are slight.

    Paul,

Do you have a feel for the liklihood of a managerial change between now and the start of next season? I feel it's now inevitable.

There's hardly another top club side in Europe that depends so much on their support base to generate income. There are clear signs of disillusionment amongst a significant proportion of our support which has resulted in dwindling attendances and I assume falling income (both match-day generated and merchandising.) If the status quo remains, this will inevitably result in a fall in season ticket sales - which will result in a domino effect - as the number of season ticket sales fall so the number of available match tickets increases - as supporters realise that they can pick and choose their games, so they are less likely to buy season tickets - and so the vicious circle continues.

This dommsday scenario is now almost upon us and must have the board seriously concerned. What do they do about it? What will the result be if they continue with Gordon Strachan?

    Catastrophic I say.

Ulysses, no, I was not sitting on that article, I was up for the fight to win the league, but yes, it did hurt.

    Winningemmell, you are v welcome.

Bryce, I did say I would wait until the end of the season, but we all have to speak our minds. I could have written a lot more, but that’ll wait for another day.

Antsman, changing manager is a high risk decision, there are no guarantees that we will be able to recruit someone of the calibre required. There is also never a good time to make this decision, team plans take months to gestate, but I don’t think there is any way back now.

    ArdMacha, you are welcome.

DundeeBhoy, your comment on the previous article has been deleted, not for you defence of the profanity you chanted at the Celtic Park yesterday, but for your language on this (a Celtic) blog.

The Scotsman is carrying an article which once again is negative to Celtic, saying

"Keane says it was mistake to join Celtic after United bust-up" Written by a guy called

    By Ewing Grahame

Other papers seem to report that Roy Keane talked about leaving Man U yet their stories don't mention him regretting that he went to Celtic. I suspect that Ewing Grahame has added that bit himself but if someone can tell me otherwise I apologise to him.

If though that is the case I'm wondering if we can find out more about this guy. We seem to allow reporters to say what they like and never look at them as persons with agendas. Who is Ewing Grahame and why does he tell lies about Celtic?

    Re: Last thread
The behaviour of our fans was called into question when looking at the abuse that WGS endured. I am of the quiet persuaion when watching a game but yesterday proved to be too much - I freaked. a lack of character and lack of understanding is the biggest crime that I can bring against our manager, he has no idea about our beloved club, rather he is in his own words 'managing the group'. In many ways he brought yesterdays abuse on himself, in yet another sarcastic interview he vented that 'if they pay their money then they are entitled to their opinion'. Well Gordon, you got it yesterday - thanks for the two leagues and the last 16s but the time has come for us to part - close the door on your way out.

I know that most of this will have been mentioned yesterday but I was too depressed to read the boards last night.

I don't want to focus on the glory hunters that were spouting that bile at the end of the game. True supporters they are not. My friend who sits next to me had to physically restrain his cousin as he tried to swing for one of said glory hunters who'd came down the staircase singing that mince. I don't condone his actions and we I'm glad we stopped him before it got anymore serious but it was a personal low point for me this season. I was lifted a moment later if only too briefly by joining in with other fans who had remained in the stadium, to drown out the idiots.

I won't go over the match too much but I'd like to highlight the Hutchinson debacle although I'm sure it's been mentioned before. He goes to warm up around the 76min mark. Spends about 5 mins warming up and then is called back to the bench. Strips and waits. Then proceeds to put his top back on. A minute later he is going through what looked like at least three pages of tactics!! Surely with a few mins remaining all that needs to be said is get in the box and get on the end of something, anything, please! He then comes on as a sub, replacing the player that is furthest away from the bench. No wonder Hinkel was mystified. If you're going to take anyone off how about going for the other fullback that is nearest the god damn dugout!

At that point I started wondering if the lunatics had taken over the asylum...

Yet today I awake and hope with all my heart that a miracle can still be achieved. If not, I'll be there again for next season. Same seat.

We are Celtic supporters faithful through and through.

However, I agree with most of the opinions on this board. It's time for him to stand down.

If I’m not mistaken PFayr, you are a lawyer, I’m not, but in my very, very limited experience of lawyering… the pertinence was always the “question”.

My question would be… not how we gave a goal away, but how such a superior team, such as ours, could fail to score.

And for me, I don’t think the answer lies in the quantifiable abilities of our starting strikers.

And PFayr, no matter what crap populates my day, I will never, ever, wrongly accuse.
I would rather bite off my tongue.

Have a good day??? My day is over but when I wake up tomorrow - I will still be a ‘pristine’ Celtic supporter. I will keep my faith and that faith is mine.

I will still be grown up and looking for adversity in a square go.

If you want my kids have grown out of their dummies so there are one or two going to a good home. Should come with a Government Health warning though: like whingeing - they can be addictive.

Never have I booed our team or manager. Until yesterday that is.
I do understand and sympathise with those who think we should only give support. But there is a limit to unconditional support, and that limit has now been reached.
We are watching our team being run into the ground. Slowly. Several records have been broken in the last few months, all of them negative: worst defensive record away from home, worst record in successive games against Rangers, scoring record in home games....etc.
Worst of all, I watched ugly scenes break out around around the stadium towards the end of yesterday's game. When this happens it has gone too far.
The board must act and quickly.

Strachan is NEVER a Celtic manager. End of. When you start accepting mediocrity, this is what you get. Caldwell, Virgo, Dublin.....Naylor hahahaha...honest to God...ask yourself this. Would O'Neil have made McManus the captain of Celtic?

  • At 06/04/08 14:28, Blogger Stuart said…

well that's it for me. Rangers may throw the league away in the remaining weeks, but even if we win the league Strachan must go. He's proven his incompetence in the last month, and even were Rangers to demonstrate greater incompetence, Gordon is not to be trusted with another season. We need a new manager in soon to work out what quality there really is in the Squad, and if there's anyone who can lead it. After they've got that done they need to start building for the CL qualifiers. We have to start this process now, rather than continuing to 'wait and see'.

Decision time has come and gone, it's time for action.

I haven't posted because I am sick like everyone else. My auld Dad said to me immediately after the game that now is the time to get behind the team. He is right, of course. I can't do otherwise. It's in the soul.

I don't agree that the attendances are dwindling at Celtic Park because of our manager (personally, I think it is more to do with the poor fare of the SPHell).

But if we're going to replace Gordon Strachan, then it is better it were done NOW, so that the new man can prepare for next season. Otherwise, we might face another Artmedia.

Who might come in who is better than our manager I have no idea. To me, it is a very risky strategy.

Hurting but still heartened to be a Celtic supporter.

It seems now the vast majority have concluded that Gordon is not the man to take us forward.

There are still 7 games to go, and the pressure to bear from the stands with every missed pass \ bizzarre substitution that Gordon makes will be heard from the stands......that will not make Celtic Park a congenial place to play this beautiul game.

    My point?

Should the board ask Gordon to stand down NOW, today, this week?

And ensure he's not the man in charge next week or do they face the possibility of the diehard away supporters at Fir Park who have been known to be a tad more vocal, literally giving Gordon a real nightmare of a day singing for him to 'be on his way'?

I reckon having Willie Mcstay \ Lenny sharing the burden till the end of the season may well get some reactions from players who look like they won't \ didn't do it for Gordon.

Thoughts cos I don't want to see \ hear fans screaming at Gordon and I supsect neither does he?

I didnt think much of SB's tracking back , to say the least.

In the end he was actually , tho' , the only one who got close to the motherwell player who got the initial shot off, just not close enough.

Naylor STOPS so far as I can see.

some goals , even the worst , are not one players fault but had anyone of SMCM,SB,LN GC or possibly AH really really burst a gut I doubt theyd have scored.

Perhaps theyve come to rely on AB pulling of save after save which he nearly did.

one way or another it was a terrible goal to lose but as someone posted earlier in the real failing yesterday was in not scoring.

From previous thread. I know we're all hurting after yesterday, but can I ask again for a bit of perspective? We were desperately unlucky yesterday. How we didn't score I don't know, given the number of chances we created.

Like Paul67 and a lot of other bloggers, I was disappointed with the team that Gordon Strachan started with. But we played well, completely dominated for the first half hour and should have been 2 or 3 goals up by 30 mins, instead we lost out to a well-constructed breakaway goal. I haven't seen stats from the game, but apart from that goal, we completely dominated possession and territory. So my question is, how is it Gordon Strachan's fault that we didn't score? We weren't at fault tactically and we weren't bad defensively.

But we bottled it. And when I say we, I mean the fans as much as anybody. I can't believe the amount of fans who yell abuse at a celtic players for their first mistake in a game. We show a lot more patience at CL games than SPL ones. Yesterday, I could just see it coming - the crowd gets on the players' backs, the players get nervous and panicky, and we end up in a vicious circle. To those 'fans' I would ask how well they would perform at work or at anything else if their every mistake was met with foul abuse? Would they carry on trying to do a good job, or would they stop taking risks, to avoid the abuse every time they made a mistake?

I left Parkhead yesterday utterly dejected. And yes, it was partly because whatever way we look at it, the chances of winning the league this year are fast disappearing over the horizon. But what upset me even more yesterday was the attitude of some so-called fans. The ones who can't wait to shout abuse at our players - and I mean right from kick-off - what's that all about?

And then there's the 'Strachan-haters' - I know there are some who genuinely don't like him personally, whether it's his wise-cracking or the way he treats the media (don't understand this, seeing as we mostly seem to despise the media anyway). For some, it's pretty irrational - they hate the fact that he was a great player in a great Aberdeen team - it's no more rational than people not liking Scott Macdonald because he scored the goals that lost us the league - they were just doing their jobs! You don't need to personally like the manager to support him and the team. But there are some amongst our support, who are a minority within a minority, who are simply bigots. And these people make me sick. And the vast majority of Celtic fans need to tell these people they're not welcome at Celtic Park. End of.

In the dying minutes yesterday, when a group of 'fans' started chanting abuse at our manager, I was proud that the majority of Celtic fans shouted them down and we sang 'faithful through and through' - but I then got abuse from a couple of these 'fans' - for supporting the team!! How do you explain that? It's painful enough when our challenge looks to be over after losing a game we really deserved to win, without so-called fans abusing our team, abusing our manager and then abusing their fellow fans for the apparent crime of supporting our team - while the game is still going on, btw!

I don't know who is going to be manager next year, but I'll give him my full support - as I have done with every Celtic manager - including Barnes, who I thought was a ridiculous appointment. I gave up on Macari, but that's because he wasn't taking it seriously and that is unforgiveable. But you can't say that about Gordon Strachan.

I think our manager's record is as good as Martin O'Neill's. I don't remember MON getting abuse, chants, or anything like the level of supporters calling for him to be sacked.

I know Gordon Strachan has made mistakes - but he has done a great job overall with fewer resources and less money than MON. If he goes, it should be because he's taken us as far as he can AND we can get a better manager in.

I can't help feeling that if he goes now, it will be partly because he's never had the support of a sizeable minority of the fans - and amongst those, a minority of bigots.

We can't expect to win the league every year and we can't sack every manager who doesn't win the league. This is a young team - they and Gordon Strachan will have learned a lot this year. Personally, I think Gordon Strachan has done enough to deserve another year - but I do worry that he seems to have a stubborn streak....

    Hail, Hail!

    I disagree

It's because he is an arrogant poor manager who can't pick a player or inspire a team. He signed his own resignation letter yesterday with that team line up.

It's time for strachan to go not because of bigoty but because he has lost the support.

let him walk with dignity we owe him that but walk he must.

    Nelsbhoy,

this summer we will need to spend 1m for Bobo´s loyalty pay off and another 1m for Tommy Gravesons departure or 1.5m in wages if he stays. We will also pay WGS 1m compensation for his departure. How much for Pendrey departure ??? so thats about 4m and thats just to clear up the mess.

That over 4m pound thrown away in dodgy deals that nave been signed sealed and delivered by the SSM.

I believe that Scott Brown will blossom into a player that deserves his 25k a week wage. Lets hope that its not another financial bloomer but its fair to say that one day Scott Brown will look deserving of that wage. Lest hope its still in the hoops

If a new manager is appointed then its fair to say that their will be a turn around of personnel. Derek Riordhan will need to be sold this summer and the portents look like he will hang around until December looking for the best deal that suits himself as he owes Celtic nothing.

Will a new manager have belief in players that other outfits have discared but WGS seen something their. E.g Evander Sno. Chris Killen, Stephen Pressley etc. Will other players feel the need to move on that WGS will no longer be there.

Anyway you look at it its a mess. Turning a profit is all that matters. CL participation. The board were patting themselves on the back having met their targets after Benfica done the business for us in Donetsk. That´s two years in a row where the inclination to perform after CL failure has not been witnessed. Thank god that wasn´t apparent in WGS first CL campaign.

So is WGS going to sacrificed at the altar for being complicit in accepting very meekly the poor business decisions that have been imposed upon him since the start of his reign ?

I reckon he will and that Boruc´s departure will herald in and finance the new Celtic managers departure.

If only DD cared as much for Celtic as David Murray does for Rangers, I dont mean this in a financial sense but in a day to day hands on ... what in the name of the wee man is going on kind of way. Who knows something as simple as that might focus the minds of the players and the coaching staff. I just cant imagine David Murray leaving Martin Bain to exclusively run Rangers and letting him take all the credit.

Credit needs to be given when credits due. PL got plenty of credit these last two years due to his financial wizardy unfortunately Celtic is a fooball club and the focus on money allowed Rangers back in. For me that´s unnacceptable whoever was complicit in this singular decision not to spend teh money these last two summers needs to do the decent thing.

    Hail Hail

Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,
    Celtic, Celtic on to victory,
They're the finest team in Scotland, I'm sure you will agree,
We'll never give up till we've won the cup and the scottish football league.

They come from bonnie Scotland, they come from county Cork,
They come from dear old Donegal and even from New York,
From every street in Glasgow they proudly make their way,
To a place called dear old paradise and this is what they say.

    Again

There's Fallon, Young and Gemmel who proudly wear the green,
There's Clark, McNeill and Kennedy the best there;s ever been,
Jim Johnstone, Murdoch, Chalmers, John Divers and John Hughes,
And sixty thousand Celtic fans who proudly shout the news.

    And Again

Gweedorebhoy - I chose my words carefully - I wasn't saying if Gordon goes it'll be because of bigotry. What I was saying was that it will be partly because he NEVER had the support of a sizeable minority of fans. I said and I believe that the bigots are a minority of a minority. It just sticks in my craw that they'll get what they've wanted all along.

But that's not a good enough reason for him to stay either. I don't agree he's a poor manager - his overall record speaks for itself and he has achieved that with limited resources. I agree he can be a bit arrogant or maybe more stubborn than anything else and yes, he has made a few mistakes. I agree entirely with Paul about his team selection yesterday though and I can't help but feel there's a bit of stubbornness there, which we could well do without.

I won't argue if we get a better manager to replace him, but it won't be easy to attract a top-level manager to the SPHell.

    3-3 Full time.

Dundee United missed a bagload of chances and made silly mistakes at the back, not to mention Novo being offside at his goal.

It should also be noted that United again played good football and created chances regularly.

If an SPL manager were in the running for the Celtic job, Craig Levein would very likely be at the top of the list.

    Aw Naw,

I’m curious as to why you think murray cares for rangers.
Is it because he’s actively trying to sell his majority shareholding? Or perhaps because he named the training ground after himself? Or is it the political ‘celebrations’ he currently stages. Maybe DD should appoint a John Mc Clelland type figure to divert some of the flak when things are not going so well? Maybe DD should stage an Easter commemoration of the 1916 Rising? Or maybe you’d prefer is DD carried out some smoke-and-mirrors Balance Sheet adjustments to disguise the fact that he has virtually bankrupted his club?

No matter what i still reckon the league is over my mind won't change as i can not see Celtic winning all their remaining games. View i shared before the game yesterda was they would drop something today and i was proved right, but i was also proved right with Celtic winning all their remaining games.

How we have allowed our advantage to disappear and let this team win a treble is beyond me.

    this time from the linesmen

1st goal was not a free kick

    2nd goal Novo was offside

the game is easy when you get such a helping hand

    Boyd should have been booked

    and

    They're 7 points ahead.

    One game in hand.

More away games remain than home games, and going by today's performance they're not too hot away from home.

    -

We've got them twice at home.

We can win these two games.

If we do, the difference is down to 1, and they'll still have their game in hand.

Surely we can't throw in the towel yet, even with the poor fare on show at the moment.

We have enough to scrape the victories required.

    It can be done.

you said, 'Glasgow bhoy, I have no information on what will happen, but for a whole lot of reasons I believe we will have a new manager next season.'

When do you expect the deed will be done, do you not think we should get it over and done with as fast as possible for all concerned?

It would let the new man come in and have a look at our players while we'll still be playing competitive games.
