TITLE: 13 defeats in 8 years, Rangers bottle it at Celtic Park
AUTHOR: Paul67

BODY:
Since August 2000 when the world discovered that the balance-of-power in Scottish football had shifted, Rangers have visited Celtic Park on 18 occasions.
They scored 11 goals in that time (seven of those came in three games) and failed to score 11 times. Celtic scored 31 goals in the same period, failing to score three times.
There have been three draws, two wins for Rangers and 13 wins for Celtic.
Of the five games Rangers avoided defeat, three league games, one win and two draws, came long after the outcome of the championship was determined in Celtic’s favour, meaning Rangers have only achieved one meaningful win (0-2 in 2005) and one draw (3-3 in 2002) at Celtic Park in eight years.
There have been 13 ‘meaningful’ games, played when the league was still in the balance, or in a cup competition; Celtic won 11 of these games.
The stats indicate Rangers bottle it before massed ranks of the Celtic support; make sure they know where they are tomorrow. There can hardly be a 'derby' in world football worthy of the name which such an imbalance in results at one venue exists.
Sing loud, sing proud, give the bhoys every encouragement for 90 minutes – and then the rest - and enjoy yourself.

celtic_first,
A couple of interesting points mentioned by the commentators on Sky Sports.
1. Villareal are ahead of Barca on the head-to-head so Barca will need to overtake them to get 2nd place.
2. Depor coach Lotina is going for his first ever win against Rijkaard tonight. If I caught the stats properly, he has had 6 losses & 2 draws in 8 games against Rijkaard.
A question for you - wasn't Lotina Celta's coach when we beat them en route to Seville? If so, how do the Depor fans take to having an ex-Celta man in charge?

They know by winning tomorrow they will win the league and give themselves a massive boost before the second leg of the semi final.
However, I have no doubt we will win tomorrow.

Frank Rijkaard will probably walk if the go out on Tuesday night.
I wonder what odds Nutsy would give on Barcelona prevailing. I'm not a betting man but I feel pretty sure they will do it, possibly with a score draw.
The thought of Barcelona going another game without scoring seems irrational.

COMMENT-BODY:During the last of match at CP we totally dominated the first half when Rangers played the 4-5-1.
Despite this total dominance it took a long range wonder goal to break our recent duck against them.
When Rangers changed to a more attacking 4-4-2,i felt that they took control of the game and looked the more likely to win it,until that piece of magic from Shoonskie.
The sending off forced them back into a more defensive mode.
That being said ,i did not think that we were actually going to score, against there ten men.
I felt that it was a mistake to take off Robson. His dead balls, and ability to strike the ball with power and accuracy ,from distance, will be vital tomorrow.
I think ,that despite there injuries you will see a much more attack minded Rangers than ,the last time.
McDonald will get chances,he must take them.
This game may have more goals than many think.

I've checked the Russian sites for that story.
I can say that if Daily Record quotes are true then Dick Advocaat is farcical man.
He is in conflict with Konstantin Sarsanya who is responsible for the transfers in Zenit.
Advocaat accused Sarsanya (and fans)of racism without giving any evidences of that.
The point is that Advocaat who has still valid contract with Zenit tried to sign the contract with Schalke and one other German club.
These talks ended without success for Dick...but Russian media say he signed a contract with Australian Federation.

I am looking at a photograph from that 1969 Cup Final where Billy McNeill is on his knees holding his head with Ferguson standing over him.
The caption reads that "Ferguson has an "I didn't mean it look" while Bobby Murdoch looks on."
Like you though I am sure that Ferguson butted Bobby Murdoch during the game.
I was right in the middle of the North Enclosure that day (on the front line) and shared a barrier with a well dressed gent in a Rangers blazer and tie.
He left well before the end!

Really can't argue with anything you say regarding the last match.
I think Walter will go with his tried and trusted hoping to get the point which would almost certainly deliver them the title. However to a certain extent the last win has gotten the monkey off our backs and with a full house cheering us on I hope to collect three points. Naka and Aiden are key so I expect them to come in for some special attention. Hope Naka especially can remain up for it - if he can then happy days. Would love it - realy love it if we could give them a real thumping but a scraped 1 - 0 in the final minute will suffice!
Don't know if both teams will finish with eleven men.
Standing up for the Good Guys!!

COMMENT-BODY:Paul I admire your confidence but the huns are the masters of killing a game.
We have to be hard tomorrow robson and hartley getting the first tackle in what ever it takes. Donatie must not be allowed anywhere near a jersey.
I am confident we will win tomorrow as the huns have the best centre half in scotland out and will miss him big time.
My only concern is over selection. In our dismal display against aberdeen bobo was a stand out whilst GG a scorer having a shocker. He is a frustrating player full of potential with the first touch either sublime or shocking. An impact player in my view.
I would like to see GG replaced with JVOh and Bobo kept in the team. Obviously the first may happen but the latter will never occur as Caldwell will be a certain starter.
Early start tomorrow but it should be a great day and always great to hammer the huns.
Such an important game lose or draw and its finished win and the miracle could occur.
Imagine if we had got the selection against motherwell right and had a midfield that day but hey let's hope for the miracle.

COMMENT-BODY:Mouldy67, aye, great stats indeed.
Gordon J, I’m ready for it too.
BMS71, turn it up to 67!
Bankiebhoy1, they sure don’t like Celtic Park.
Antsman, I don’t know what Gordon needs to do to be accepted at Celtic Park. Win three in a row? Maybe, but maybe not.
I think he is fighting a losing battle.
Tinytim, I never felt Rangers looked like winning last week, in fact, I don’t recall a single save from Artur all game.
We controlled the first half but there were few clear cut chances as they were defending deep and in numbers.
They changed things in the second half, but we created the only clear cut chance (Nakamura shot which resulted in them going down to 10 men).
I also did not agree with the Robson substitution, I would have taken a full back off, but the winning goal came from a move involving:
Wilson, Samaras, Caldwell, McDonald and Vennegoor of Hesselink.
Two defenders would not have been that far forward if we had taken off a full back.
See what we know!
Gweedore, let’s take a look at their CP record in the last 8 years:
Defeat
Defeat
Defeat
Draw
Draw
Defeat
Defeat
Defeat
Defeat
Defeat
Defeat
Win
Defeat
Defeat
Draw
Defeat

They may well be able to kill a game, but they seem to lose their composure (and everything else) at Celtic Park.
Ciao Lorenzo67, many thanks for your kind words.

The '69 final was my first Celtic game ever! I remember very well the press lobbying for Colin Stein's suspension to be overturned to allow him to play in the final.
Big Caesar's goal in the second minute was the end of Ferguson at Rangers. Apparently he was supposed to pick him up at set pieces. As I remember it He did head butt Bobby Murdoch but for me it wasn';t apparent from watching the game - I read it some years later actually.
Anyway - it was a fantastic day for a teenager over from Ireland. First Celtic match - first Cup final.
Goosebumps!

I was definitely Murdoch that Ferguson butted that day.
As well as having a graphic memory of the incident, it was referred to by Hugh McIlvanney.
Bobby won the Player of the Yeqr award that year and in his tribute in, I think, the Observer, HMcI said that not alone for his ability did Bobby deserve the award ,but also for the way he failed to react to Ferguson's assault.

"Ye know nuthin' about football wee man",
Paul's excellent post on the cumulative statistical advantage we have over the "darkside" in recent encounters would support the brother's view ( as shamefully I hadn't worked this out for myself). More to the point,hands-up, when I first saw big Virgo I thought to myself, there's a "player" and perhaps I was wrong......pause for comedic effect. I'm glad to say I thought Robson was duff when we shelled out 2 mill for the wee fella, now I'm just hoping my oft-erring radar is still wonky and the wee chap does us a right turn tomorrow! The protocol for flying the flag contains 23 guidelines relating to its display, as issued by the Department of Taoiseach. Here are a few of them:
15 - The flag should be displayed in the open only between sunrise and sunset
17 - the flag should never be defaced with slogans, logos, lettering or pictures
18 - The flag should not be draped on cars, trains, boats or other transport
19 - care should be taken to ensure the flag does not touch the ground, trail in the water or become entangled in trees
I wonder how the Che Guvara Lynch
supporters - and others - feel about this

COMMENT-BODY:First time blogger, but have viewed CQN for the best part of 3 years. I feel tomorrow if we dont score early we may hand the initiative to Rangers, we dont create enough clear cut chances against reasonable sides. We must start if possible with the same side that won last week. The play must be stretched the way Barcelona did against us, our better footballers will win the game for us.
My first memory of a Celtic game is our 2-1 win at Ibrox in 1988 courtesy of Andy Walkers chest. Living in the North of Ireland we get saturated with English football fans, but I count myself lucky to have a father who knows only of Celtic and passed the tradition on to me. My son lies in my arms now not knowing he will have the same honour that I enjoy of following the hoops.

i expect them to play the most ANTI of anti football and play for a draw
their dad`s army CB`s will be protected by Hemdani and i expect either Novo or Whittaker to double up on Aiden with the RB

On the Monday following the Cup Final, Celtic lost 4-2 to Morton at Celtic Park with their Danish striker Per Bartram scoring three times. His goals came in the fourth, fifth and tenth minutes!
Joe Harper scored the other.
As the league was already won, Celtic displayed the three trophies (treble) before the game to the 31000 crowd.

I expect tomorrow will be a hard game - they will be fired up from the start after their poor start last time, where we dominated them easily. I expect they'll kick everything that moves, so my money is on Novo getting first use of the soap. Aiden's comments at the PotY awards made clear what he thinks of Novo's claims to have had him in his pocket and I expect Aiden to torment Novo till he cracks.
But if Artur plays to his normal form, rather than snoozing as he did last time, I can't see them scoring. I can see us scoring a few, especially from set pieces - a series of corners like we had last time with Naka & Robo delivering quality balls should get us a couple without Ugly Betty in the way.
C'mon the hoops.

Wrap the green flag round me, boys,
To die were far more sweet,
with Erin's noble emblem boys,
To be my winding sheet.
In life l loved to see it wave,
And follow where it led,
But now my eyes grow dim - my hand
Would grasp its last bright shred.
Then wrap the green flag round me, boys,
To die were far sweet
With Erin's noble emblem boys,
To be my winding sheet.
And I had hoped to meet you, boys,
On many a well-fought field,
When to our sacred banner, boys,
The traitorous foe would yield,
But now, alas! I am denied
My dearest earthly prayer,
You'll follow and you'll meet the foe,
But l shall not be there.
But though my body moulders, boys,
My spirit will be free,
And every comrade's honour, boys,
Will yet be dear to me.
And in the thick and bloody fight
Let not your courage lag.
For I'll be there and hovering near
Around the dear old flag.

Let’s face it anything other than a win tomorrow and our season is over.Whatever the result, I’d like to throw a little praise at Paul67 for his continued pertinacity and fortitude over the season. Many a time have I been picked up by your words and my belief in the triumph of good over evil renewed.
You deserve a medal for your unwavering beat of counteraction in the defense of the Celtic community and deriding of Scotland's shame.
Come rain, snow or shine tomorrow, you and all the contributers on cqn have played a blinder all season.
Hail Hail to one and all.

COMMENT-BODY:hi Paul.
I've been invited to one of the Hospitality Suites tomorrow, arrive at 11-30 for the 12-30 kick-off,maybe time for a wee dram before the game.
I feel a different atmosphere building for this game as against previous encounters,I don't know why but I do feel it,Hopefully we'll win playing decent football, but winning ugly will do for me also.We can take a leaf out of their books tomorrow, they win ugly every week.
I hope we go out and support our team from first whistle, to last, get behind the team, it's our team, and if your not so favourite players are playing, cheer them on as you would your favourites.Take the bad with the good, and we should prevail.
Rangers, and Smith in particular are ready for cracking, after seeing him in the Stand with his head in his hands, ala Allie MacLeod in Argentina,he's on the verge.
A couple of lines from Dads Army,As said by private Dunn,"they don't like it up-em,no they don't like it up-em."
And after the final whistle,Private Frasers everlasting line,"Their DOOMED-DOOMED I tell yi".Thats Rangers after the final whistle.

Yes I remember being at that game at Rugby Park.
We lost (2-0), as we always seemed to do there in those days
It was the last of the League Cup sectional games on 29th August 1964.
As you say, Billy and Bobby were carried off.
Celtic still won the section.
Bobby was back within a fortnight however Billy didn't return until 21 Novemeber that year in a game at Celtic Park v Falkirk when the one and only Hugh Maxwell made his Celtic debut and scored after 10 seconds in a 3-0 victory.

Celtic did indeed play 2 games on the same day, 15 April 1916.
In the afternoon, Raith Rovers were defeated 6-0 at Celtic Park and Celtic then headed off to Motherwell where they won 3-1.
Celtic actually offered to play both games on the same day.
The Government had banned midweek football in order that the war effort would not be interrupted.
It should also be noted that Motherwell had also played earlier that day too v Ayr United where they lost 3-0.

I only remember Rangers being in control for around 10 mins in 2nd and we had it firmly back in hand by the time Ugly Betty made that save. It still amazes me how so many who attend and watch the same show can come to so many different conclusion. The Human Brain is one serious piece of work.
Evening Mouldy67.
Paul67, great rallying call to the BHOYS. Can I just add one thing to your last sentance.
"Sing loud, sing proud, give the bhoys every encouragement for 90 minutes" and drown out putrid bile being spewed from the visitors "– and then the rest - and enjoy yourself."

Tomorrows result is important in many ways, a positive result gives us all a lift,Keeps the league hope alive, makes the daily grind less of a burden, makes every encounter with brer hun something to savour and sticks one back up the pipe of all those meeja types we rightly despise - ye see we're still fightin' (sorry I mustn't generalise) I'm still fightin' each and every one of those pro R@@@@@s plamphs, the Dougies, The Traynor's, the Dawyyls the fat Derecks,The wee Chick dicks, The Smug Beggs and the Patronising Patersons who abuse their position in the media to put one side of the story in front of us and gleefully wait to cynically chide our derision with pantomime cries of "Paranoia!". Tomorrows game is important in many ways, and heres hoping the 'tic tear that mob a new one, regardless of the result however, this season has shown (me at least) the absolute depth of their antipathy towards us and our lot. ( Apologies If the prose gets a tad "purple" the vin rouge may be taking effect)As important as it is for us to be vocal on the park in support of the bhoys, we should follow the example that I think the SSM has shown recently to great effect and and actively agitate in an intelligent fashion against those who would do us a disservice.
This forum is an excellent starting point, lets keep the pressure on the bad guys. Goodnight.

COMMENT-BODY:I never read the red tops, broadsheets,or any Media that's anti Celtic,So I don't get much information regarding the good things that happen to Celtic, other than what I read on CQN.
There are a lot of very good posters come on here, and it's a pleasure to read your posts,Thanks,And Thank you Paul, for creating such a good site, for most part I lurk with a vengence, probably on lurking every day given the chance.
The reason I'm posting this is,THE MEDIA,Over the last few years they have got up a head of steam against us,and it doesn't seem to be relenting,They call us Paranoid,Maybe sometimes we can be,but the overwhelming amount of times were not paranoid, our arguements are usually just.
How are they going to stop their unjust comments about our team, they seem to be digging themselves deeper into a hole that they won't get out off,how are they going to manage to call a halt to all the anti Celtic crap they come out with.
I for one will never purchase a Paper where Keevins is employed, never again. And there are more that would have to part company with their employers, before I'd go into my pocket to get out change to pay for a paper,A list to long to mention.
Whats the solution, have they gone to far with their diatribe against our Club, only time will tell, but it doesn't seem like ending soon.
What happens when the Murray man calls it a day,and the next owner of Rangers, doesn't want the same love affair as the present incumbent.Yes their on a sticky wicket,a slippery slope,an neverending slide into oblivion,if that comes to pass,I'll be a very happy man.

Can't remember who posted the link to the Kenny Dalglish goals but they were great to see again.
Anyone know if there is a link to a couple of goals he and Harry Hood scored against Partick Thistle and St. Johnstone at Celtic Park in two succesive games where they curled the ball into the top corner over the defensive wall? It was something you didnt see too often then. I cant even remember for sure if they were on the telly.

COMMENT-BODY:Johnstone was one of the "Lisbon Lions", the team that won the European Cup for Celtic in 1967. Jock Stein had instilled in the team the conviction that they could beat the superstars of Internazionale, but Johnstone expected that Celtic would "get gubbed". He later recalled : "There they were, Facchetti, Domenghini, Mazzola, Cappellini; all six-footers wi' Ambre Solaire suntans, Colgate smiles and sleek-backed hair. Each and every wan o' them looked like yon film star Cesar Romero. They even smelt beautiful. And there's us lot - midgets. Ah've got nae teeth, Bobby Lennox hasnae any, and old Ronnie Simpson's got the full monty, nae teeth top an' bottom. The Italians are staring doon at us an' we're grinnin' back up at 'em wi' our great gumsy grins. We must have looked like something out o' the circus."
In the tunnel before the game, legend has it that he and Bertie Auld led a Celtic chorus of the The Celtic Song much to the bemusement of the Inter players.
In the end of course, the Italians had no answer to the free-flowing total football of Stein's Celtic, exemplified by Johnstone, a style in polar opposition to Internationale's defensive Catenaccio style which had dominated European football. Johnstone described the Celtic style as "like the Dutch speeded-up".
In the immediate aftermath of the Lisbon victory Celtic formed the opposition in the testimonial game for the Real Madrid player Alfredo Di Stéfano. Johnstone's performance was such that the Real supporters began to cry "Ole !" every time he dribbled past one of their own team's players. Referring to his encounter with Johnstone in the 1970 European Cup semi-final, in what was billed at the time as the football "Battle of Britain", Terry Cooper of Leeds United described Johnstone as "my nightmare", such was the quality of his opponent's play.

No, it is probably more than that. If he has discovered that Scottish players play with a lot more heart in the big games than Thomas Gravesen and Massimo Donati, he might have learned one of the biggest lessons of his managerial career - buy the guy that wants it the most.

IMHO, those of us who saw Henrik in his prime, should be grateful that he chose to spend those years with our club. We will wait a very, very long time to see his like again.
The players that helped him to achieve his true potential must also never be undervalued But was there a better striker in the whole world at that time ???

not been on much this week as been very busy work wise, but can I just say excellent work in the rallying call today/yesterday.
We CAN do this, we MUST do this, we WILL do this!
Time to pile the pressure on the huns, I think we have already seen it beginning to take its toll - a la wattie's comments re. SSM yesterday - just wait until we are 5 ahead tomorrow night!!!
More's the pity Hibs didn't win yesterday, but it is still there for the taking.
Time to step on up and show them what being CHAMPIONS is all about Bhoys.
Something they don't have and something they can't handle!!

I'm with Paul on negative karma to be honest. I don't want to write any of them off. I would be happy to go into next season with anu of them, suplememnted by one or two quality players. (OK, three then Defence, midfield, forward.)
Nakamura and McGeady are exceptional football players and both have shown a physical edge to their game recently that bodes well for the future. Keep.
Caldwell and McManus are a better partnership than they get credit for. Keep, but help with an experienced quality central defender.
Boruc. Get the 10 million, but spend some of it on someone with similar capabilty. Where is the new Alan McGregor?
Hinkel. Keep. Wilson, give him a chance.
Robson and Hartley will not take us forward in Europe but they will win us games in Scotland. Keep.
Donati? And some people say Nakamura is a luxury player. You look the part Massimo, if only....
Skoosh is too young to be our lynchpin. Give him a year or two. Keep.
Front players? Keep whoever gets a hattrick tomorrow.

As someone who's hero was King Kenny I never thought there would be another who could come close, never mind be right there alongside him, your link reminded me of the moment when my wife said to me that apart from the birth of my two kids, she had never seen me cry......except for that day v United when Henrik said goodbye.
(for a variety of reasons I was unable to go to the game that day, hence the reason Mrs Token saw the tears in my eyes as I watched it on TV at my in-laws)
I hope to have tears in my eyes once more come 18th May when we complete 3-In-A-Row!!!

COMMENT-BODY:History is not a Meccano set. You can’t buy and fabricate it; structure and record it prosperity morphed from your hearts desire. Would be nice if we could but we can’t because we were born on the wrong side of the tracks.
The side of the tracks that, for over five hundred years, has had to endure history - rather than revel it. We’ve had our moments though. We had our heroes; we’ve won a few of the battles; but oh, what a price we paid. We still do; on both sides of the Irish Sea.
We are subservient to the history makers, the media mongrels and the feral establishment scribes and their puppet law makers.
We, regardless of persuasion, but dependant on affiliation, are viewed by many as sub-human. Believe it because it is so. They are the ‘People’ and we are not. Their right of passage is assured regardless of lives conduct, ours is not; no matter how saintly our deeds and embracing our words.
We, each and every one of us, can look back on our history of oppression and violence and pluck a moment, an individual, an event, that has caused us inspiration, to know great joy, swell with great pride in who we are and for what we stand.
In doing so, we acknowledge the achievements of others. Achievements borne of oppression, sacrifice, hardships, pain and often… death itself. They, who have gone before us, have endured and suffered so as we, might one day, be accepted an equal.
History is a retrospective fable. It is reactive not proactive (sic). It is a record of events and the peoples that populated the moment in the time. It is the product of Machiavellian politics, of greed, of cheating, of denying, of back-stabbing, of insidious strategies merciless and brutally pursued. Some are more practised in these skills than others.
There are other aspects to history but history itself denies us the platform to relate our story.
They, the quintessential, crave their glory, they rewrite histories defeats - their victories. They are legends in their own minds and they boast their no surrender.
(have they ever read the history of their no surrender)
But they despise us our solidarity. They envy and they despise us our ‘family’. They fear our commitment and our ability to endure. They cannot comprehend our faith and our hope within, and this they fear most. More than anything… it is the intangibles they fear. That which they cannot begin to understand causes them the most concern.
They fear our support; they even made a plea that this game is played behind closed doors, simply because they fear. They fear our team and they fear the support.
They, individually, fear each and every one of us, individually, and collectively.
Today it is once again Celtic v Rangers; the sub-humans, the illiterates, the taigs, the poxy jocks, the papists, against the quintessential establishment’s resolute and resplendent defenders.
Today might be a day to abandon guile and sporting chivalry; today might well be a day for the vernacular, the blood and snotters. Do unto them as they would do unto us …only do it first. And do it with conviction.
Today could well be another of these days where the establishment gets a right good kick in the goolies.
Today is not about history, not yet anyway; it is not about religion and right of passage. Today is much more than that in the parochial; it is about Celtic versus Rangers; it is simply ‘Us against Them.’.
If we win, I don’t care how they spin their histories; not any more, because as I watch from the other side of the world, so too do millions upon millions of untainted and unbiased human beings in-between. And besides, it is very hard to be objective after your nemesis has just colonised your tonsils with your goolies.
History never records the names that made it. The written history is selective and exclusive. But never forget - History is a product of the little guys who elevate their heroes to deeds of greatness. As you walk to the game today history might neglect you, the little guys, your part but the players know that history is incapable of recording the faith, the hope, the support, the twelfth man, that you undoubtedly are.
In their eyes, you are anything but the little guys.
Oh! and every single day, no matter my mood, I always thank my good god, that whatever his wisdom that day, he chose me along with you guys to be born the wrong side of the tracks.
The Green Brigade.
History is indeed not a Meccano toy but somebody neglected to tell Mr. Murray and his ‘Laptop Loyal’.

huge day for the club. this is the day where every celt ON and OFF the field must stand up and be counted .this is our cup final . we know what we will be up against , a team full of hatchet men , divers , and cheats . they will claim for everything .and make no mistake they will battle to the very end . and i do expect controversy from their friend in the middle . but we can do it, i have no fear .if our lads dont know what is at stake here then they shouldnt be pulling that wonderful jersey over their heads. go get them bhoys . and my last word .re banners . noticed one on their last visit to us . it read " kevin thomson . twice the player half the cost " i hope to god if he gets on to the park .that scott brown takes stock of those remarks .and starts to show us we know better .

Rangers are tired, injured and hit by suspension of arguably their best player.
But their backroom staff will have them fired up in their quintessentially traditional way, 'Make sure you're up to your knees in it lads'.
But I'm pretty sure Celtic wil know what's at stake. Our bhoy from Lurgan will have been keeping things ticking along nicely on that front over the past week.

Get up bhoys and hit em one more time
We may be losing now but we cant stop trying
So hold that line, baby hold that line

You believe its true, it will surely happen
Shining still, to give us the will
Bright as the day, to show us the way
Somehow, today,
We need just one victory and we're on our way
Prayin for it all day and fightin for it all night
Give us just one victory, it will be all right
