GL2, sorry.
If Seville win this, they go into the CL qualification positions (fourth). I was saying earlier that it's an amazing achievement considering the death of Antonio Puerta and the departure for Tottenham earlier in the season of coach Juande Ramos.
The guy who took over, Manolo Jiménez is an inside man but is a total rookie. It would be amazing for him to take them into the CL two years running.

from previous article:
Terryinbudapest, good call, this month’s honour goes to… o1bhoy.
Dobbo, agree, the strikers have been disappointing recently, but I think we clicked when Hartley and Robson were in the middle.
Tick Talk, good to meet you today.

I wasn't at the game today, but judging by most of the comments posted on the previous threads, it was a game I have seen a few times this season.
It's pointless to moan about the performance as the win is all that mattered. We should not expect flowing football when we are up against teams with all eleven players behind the ball. A team of even half-decent players, if well-drilled, disciplined and motivated (which most teams who play Celtic are), will always make things very difficult and kill the game as a spectacle.
Celtic got the win today, went two points ahead of the Huns, and put some more pressure on them before their match tomorrow. We can't really ask for much more.
Next Sunday's match is now our most important match since this afternoon's. We beat the Huns' first choice team on Wednesday, it looks like we might be playing their reserves on Sunday.
McGregor out, Cuellar out, McCulloch out. These have been HUGE players for them this season. They will be without their two best defensive players, and their out-ball and main attacking ploy. They are there for the taking and a five point advantage.
McGregor and McCulloch look like being out for the season. IF we can go five ahead next weekend, the pressure on the Huns will be huge. Injuries are taking their toll, and fatigue is sure to set in.
The season has panned out almost perfectly for Rangers so far - refereeing decisions in their favour, some truly awful Celtic performances, opposition keepers throwing them into their own net, opposition defenders laying it on a plate, every bounce of the ball seems to have gone their way. Has their luck run out at the best possible time?
Why oh why did we have to lose to Motherwell?
-
gweedorebhoy
At least we agree we need a new Left Back! For me his main weakness is in possession, I don’t think he is a poor or average defender - although I agree is far from infallible. More attacking prowess, pace etc is what I want to see in this position.
WGS I think is the right man as he knows what we need to get it right. I think last summer no one could have foreseen how well Rangers would have performed, to a degree the board were caught napping – there is no way WGS would not have wanted us to settle for the transfers we completed early on in the summer.
I think there is a clear need for that bit more up top in order to break down stubborn SPL sides at home that have cost us points (by that I mean every side that comes to CP playing for a 0-0 including them!) and to cause more problems to teams in the CL. Also at the back, experience to cut down on basic errors such as those in the 3-2 loss to Inverness.
I hope the board back WGS because I have bought into his vision for the club – he has achieved as much as MON did in 5 seasons, without the kind of support MON received.
-
Hypothetical I know, but I would have loved to have seen Magic and Samaras play together.
Don't suppose we will see Deek coming into the equation?
-
Paul,
I agree that Robson and Hartley are the pair for the SPL, but the CL? I am sure we have the resourses to buy a player who can do both.
I think if I got a good offer for Scott Brown i might take it.... but he has so much ability - he may just click like Aiden.
For me two of the top targets for the summer should be James McCarthy and Kevin McDonald. But for the future...
-
Nervy game but surely we can muster 100% support for the team with a few games to go and a championship to revive. Some of the "shouts of frustration" from the crowd can be doing no good at all.
As an aside, having had my first experience as a football fat cat I have to say that the experience was first rate.
Lovely food, excellent friendly service and a very efficient operation superbly coordinated. Made for a fantastic day.
-
Today was a good win. I suppose with all the changes (before and during the game) and coming off the high of Wednesday it is understandable that we didn't get the performance to go along with it.
McDonald is running on empty. I'm not a big fan of Samaras but fair play he made the difference today.
The service the strikers are getting now with Robson quality added to the McGeady and Naka we should be scoring more goals.

good 3 points..i was worried about an anti climax after the r*****s game but 3 points in the bag and bring them on next week...
it ain't over until the fat lady sings..and i've told my mrs, no choir practice until late june!
-
The performance was very laboured today, but we should not be surprised considering the previous game, the stage of the season, and the attitude of the opposition. Barcelona are an awesome team, but met the same kind of match at Ibrox, and only made a few clear chances, much like today.
Next match if JVOH is fit he must play, as he generally scores his half-chances, though bizarrely more with his feet than with his head! Considering we get a lot more crosses now, JVOH and Samaras in the box should work better, especially on Sunday.
Brown to be benched as Robson and Hartley know all about toughing it out in the SPL, and look like they have an understanding.
In some ways Barry Robson may turn out to be another Lubo. I know they are slightly different players, but I mean in the fact that they only came to prominence at Celtic after many years in the game.
I am still wondering why Mizuno has not been given a cameo five minutes yet, I still think he is waiting for that desperate moment when Naka or Aiden gets injured/suspended/play terrible, we have 10 minutes to go and a goal to grab, and he wants the surprise factor to get us the points.

I would love to be proved wrong and we beat the huns to the title
I think many mistakes have been made and we could have avoided them.
We all knew the huns would gamble on the league.
We all knew they would buy players with heart and stamina.
We all knew they would bully us.
It has taken us until now to fight back.
To late in my view. I hope i am wrong but we seemed lighweight and disjointed for long periods.
I am after a centre half, left back , central midfield player and a striker but hey i was after them last summer and nothing happened.
Greenlion2
We seem to be lackluster and disjointed on many occasions I stand by my own personal view that moyes, keane or mowbray could take us forward.

celtic_first:
I certainly wouldn't have bet on Kanoute scoring that penalty, surprised about the rebound miss though.
4-1 is horrible for them though.
One thing to note though, even in such a poor performance, the fans are still making a hell of a lot of noise. If we had that kind of noise at home games in the SPL, things probably wouldn't be so difficult.
-
gweedorebhoy dont take this the wrong way but if Gordon leaves I hope the board dont take into account 'personal views' to replace him and use actual resume.
-
I was delighted with the result today, although they always seem to put us through the wringer.
What a player young Caddis seems to be : confident, inventive and technically excellent.
-
First time post after lurking on this excellent site for some months.
At the game today. Great to see Bobo play and play well. Realistic to know however that GS will restore Caldwell to his usual berth next week. Caddis also excellent when he came on - a definite contender for a more regular slot. Pity he's so wee.
Although Samaras didn't perform partcularly well (goals both allowed and disallowed excepted), I think he should start with JVOH next week. Skippy continues to look jaded and out of sorts and I think would benefit from a rest.
Let's also hope that Hartley returns to link up with Robson. Brown is eligible to play and I hope that GS resists what I think will be a very real temptation from his point of view to throw him in.
One sinister footnote from today was the residue from the huns presence on Wed night that was left in the Lisbon Lions stand section where my boy and I sit. There were bits of red white & blue streamers but incredibly large numbers of seats had BJK stickers on them obviously left to wind us up at the match today. I know it must be difficult for the CP staff to clear up the mess that manky mob leave in such a short space of time, but surely they could have removed or defaced these offensive stickers somehow? In hindsight I wish that I'd taken a photo of one of them and sent it to one of the media outlets who continue to ignore this disgrace.
Poor game today, but 3 points. Game is stiil on! BELIEVE!
Hail Hail
-
only thing that mattered today was three points.....performance waas entirely irrelevant..
win next Sunday...and it is (as someone else famously said)...."squeaky bum time"
-
Borders Bhoy,
No doubt "outsourcing" stadium security and cleaning is financially astute, but if filth like this is to be ignored then our board must think again.
Disgraceful enough that this stench wafts around Scottish society, but for it to linger in our place; for it to be allowed to pollute Celtic Park after these Nazis have gone, is just insupportable.
I'm disgusted that this was allowed to happen to you,to your boy, and to the rest of us.
-
Dennis 47
The more I think about it I feel I should email CP to voice my concern about this. I know the club are avoiding drawing attention to this vicious campaign in the media, but I do feel they have a responsibility to their own supporters to ensure that all traces of this garbage are removed.

Today was a win that was very much needed. At this stage of the campaign against a team managed by thr three stooges, the most important thing was not to lose.
When Skippy was tiring i thought the manager might have given Paul McGowan a run out. Why does it take so long for us to get substitutes on. Killen appeared to be getting stripped well before he came on but took an age to get on the field.

ssm:
Sorry, I had only read the recent stuff, Saturday tends to be 'help the granny do her shopping day' so didn't get checking until this afternoon.
I checked just now. I agree to the extent that over 90 minutes, we support different teams and its all about my team. I just took the impression from your posts that you would be less respectful of someone based on their team. If that's wrong then it was an honest misunderstanding on my part, and no hard feelings here.
I simply like to see an individual to be given a chance regardless of their team. My best friend leans more towards the dark side simply because of footballing matters (his first team is Newcastle, so possibly his footballing knowledge is questionable!).
I am sure regardless of such things, when we lift the title on the final day, we will both be laughing heartily at the Ibrox team. ;)
-
poor game all round. good victory.
McGeady, Robson, Balde all recieved pass marks. Samaras and Skippy generaly poor.
Although we were poor I felt we were in control up unitl about the 75..80 mins when I think the nerves of the crowd got to the players on the field.
We won though. 1-0 and that's all that concerns me right at this time as it would have been a nightmare if wwe had dropped points sandwiched between huns game. The pressure is mounting.
C'mon the Saints tomorrow an unexpected victory would be good but at worst please take to ET and help tire the manky mob. Fiorentina for victory on Thursday and then another pumping for them in paradise, 1-0 or 10-0 doesn't as long as we win.
Hail Hail.
3-in-a-row-I-think-they-know.

That Sunday Herald apology in full
-
moonbeams:
I think a draw would be better tomorrow, a couple of suspensions and injuries to boot.
A draw combined with the amost non-existent chance of a season extension (a few other teams are already protesting) and Rangers may well have 8 games in 14 days. Perfect.
-
Стахановец, I would love to see Mizunu too but I doubt it will be this season unless we get ourselves into a secure 3/4/5 goal lead. Unfortunately yhat is highly unlikely.
-
dick_byrne:
It is good to see an apology that extends beyond a few vague words, and I like the fact that it addresses the problem reaches beyond football. The only question is where it will appear in the newspaper. Ideally it would be within the first few pages and also on the back page, but I am sure someone will let us know.
-
Стахановец, is it not played out to pens tomorrow?
-
Craxa-It was definitley an honest misunderstanding on your part.Iwould never judge a person based on the team they support, bit of an insult to my intelligence, but there you go.It must be terrible for these people who have been convicted for crimes they did not commit.I have felt that way.Anyway, let's move on & get behind Celtic for 3-in-a-row.No hard feelings.Hail,Hail.
-
moonbeams:
I also just went by the articles on this blog stating the potential replay dates, but a quick skim of Wikipedia says that it is played to a finish. I will trust Wikipedia. (No hard feelings Paul!).
In that case I hope for extra-time and a last-minute goal by Saints to take them to the final. Penalties would not be as devastating.
ssm:
A definite misunderstanding then, I am not one to be stubborn and stick to my original viewpoint, so you are right, lets put it behind us. I will raise an ale to the current SPL champions with you, for some reason I have felt all day that next week is going to work out very well for us on, and off, the park.
-
gweedorebhoy
Yeah, i think mistakes were made, but i think the solution lies in keeping faith with those who made the mistakes (and have learned from them if Jan was anything to go by) rather than people who may make the same mistakes.
For me i agree... left back, centre back, centre mid and striker(s).
Up front, be happy to take a punt with either Fletcher of Hibs or Lafferty of Burnley provided we get in quality of the level of Pavlyuchenko, Bendtner or the oft mentioned Robbie Keane!
I don't think Sameras is the answer up front, and i don't think Skippy is a long term 1st choice. Deek and Killen may as well be off. Vennegoor is interesting, i think we need an upgraded version in the summer.
That pretty much leaves Skippy and Huchinson as strikers i would keep, possibly Vennegoor if no suitable taker emerges. But i think the time is right for us to get the right man in to lead the side.
Left back and Centre back, i think we know who will likely be targeted.
Centre mid is interesting. We already have Brown, Sno, Robson, Hartley, Donati (5) fighting for 2 shirts, so at least one would have to go, prime candidate being Donati. I would have thought securing two of scottish footballs brightest prospects in Kevin McDonald and James McCarthy should be high on the agenda. A top draw player should be up there as an option as well.
Suspects for the off i guess Riordan, Bobo, Tommy G, Donati, Virgo, Pressley, Naylor would probbably be the first names on most fans lips.
There will be uncertainty over king Artur, but we are guaranteed a good price if he goes either this summer or (i suspect) next.
Scott Brown, for some reason he could be worth a few quid, would you sell?
-
for next year i would love to see someone like pavyluchenko, although the type of price he will command means he is probably well out of our budget.
i suspect naylor will move on as will pressley, riorden and virgo. bobo will only goif he gets a move to marseille in all probability. gravesen , no idea what is going to happen there.
at this stage i suspect the club haven't finalised their budget, and much will depend on whether we win the spl and whether there are any serious bids for our players. the fate of the manager will also loom large in any discussions around the setting of budgets
regardless of all of that , i would hope to see at least 4 players signed for starting positions.
-
That Sunday Herald apology is little more than the e-mailed apologies some posters on here received from the editor. While I accept the view of Paul67 and others that we can draw a veil over it, I find it baffling that the door is left open for Kenny Hodgart to write another article for the SH - as if his phrase was only offensive to football fans as it appeared in the sports pages. And the comment below the apology from 'Frank' that the phrase was ok as it was not directed at anyone... well, where do you start?
I'm something of a promiscuous Sunday paper buyer - no loyalty to any one, buy one a week. I won't be buying the Sunday Herald, and Dick's link aside, won't be logging on to their site. Simplistically, only two conclusions can be drawn from the printing of the original article. One, that the individual is a bigot, and that the phrase genuinely slipped through the net (remarkable, then, that the writer will be contributing future articles) . Two, that sectarianism is rife in the SH, to the extent that the phrase can appear despite a production 'system', that the system is rotten. Either way, a sour taste is left in the mouth in the whole sorry affair.
-
How did Balde and Donati play today?
-
Craxa-Cheers,calling it a night,off to beddybaws.G'nite.Hail,Hail & good luck to Joe Calzaghe.
-
In terms of outgoing, there are some obvious ones. Donati, Killen, Riordan, JJPD, Bobo, Pressley, Gravesen, Virgo and also Samaras is probably not a good long-term investment.
Incoming, well, Pavlyuchenko would be awesome, the natural scoring instinct, but money is good right now in Moskva, and Rassii is rated higher than the SPL. However, Spartak are not a constant CL qualifying team. Will cost big money.
I would love to see McCarthy and McDonald at the club, they are young players who just need the right coaching at the right club. Fletcher as mentioned by dobbo would be interesting, but if Real Madrid really want him, we cannot compete.
If the SPL, and even Europe, has taught us anything this year, it is that we should have more faith in our Scottish players.
-
bloke109:
This line should indicate he will no longer write for the SH;
"Kenny Hodgart will no longer write a column for the Sunday Herald."
-
Стахановец
Sorry, I got that, but Hodgart is a freelancer, also working for The List and others - he had, to my knowledge, only begun writing a football comment column in the last few months. I know I'm being picky, but the editor mentions 'column', not that he will never contribute to the paper again - if Penman meant this, he should have said it. Hodgart is clubs editor of The List, and writes also on cinema. I'd put money on him contributing to the arts section sometime soon.
-
Hi guys, been a lurker for a while and felt quite bored tonight so though i'd post for a change.
Not too sure what to feel or think about the current team but just nervous and anxious that we win! Annoying having to listen to home games on the radio (even though I have a season seat!) as I feel it makes things sound a lot worse than what it is.....I hope.
Ps. Paul, glad to see things are going well on this site...I remember meeting you at a press conf a couple of years ago when you had just been invited to them. I kept in touch with a couple of emails but have moved around a lot since then!

Only my opinion but Bobo was ok(headers too many to the opposition) and Massimo was ok. MOM in my humble opinion was Naka.
Setanta Sports News just about to show the Scottish goals.
-
bloke:
The only way to find out would be to buy it week in week out, if he does I would be very disappointed, but in a sad way, its a story another Sunday paper might be happy to report on.
Steve Claridge is it on SSN? If nothing else, he has a point about the split. I would love to see 18 teams in the top-flight again. We have teams such as Gretna, St. Mirren, Kilmarnock and Inverness in the SPL, while teams like St. Johnstone have reached the SC semis two years in a row, Gretna and QotS have both reached the final in recent years, and the list goes on.
Same amount of goes, but far more varied for the game.
On another note, did anyone notice the Inverness player greet a fan who had jumped the barrier and hugged him, yet did not receive a yellow card?!
-
There is no curse at right back. That is a load of voodoo :-)
Caddis not only had a great game going forward but he also put in some crunching tackles, which we will need against Rangers.
Balde showed strength in the air and composure (for 99% of the time) on the ground.
For me Caddis and Balde should start next week.
Any other views?
-
Watched the Setanta "highlights"!
We got lucky - there was no hand ball! But it never showed the two goals we got chalked off!
The ICT player may have got booked - Setanta highlights show very little. Tune into the Full SPL tomorrow night - all will be revealed.
-
today was squeky bum time (again) - pass marks no not in my opinion, too many hiding from taking responsibility, we got 3 points and we were lucky!

hi all,
tonight I was in company with a group of friends, none celtic/irish/catholic or rangers. The conversation came round to the celtic/rangers game, when I described my (self righteous/sanctimonious)disgust at the potato throwing and also the coin throwing.
The potato throwing was met with the response of 'it's just a laugh, you're as bad each other', a laugh also went up with the description of the 'nakamura ate my dog' banners.
The abuse of Neil Lennon was described as 'because of ginger hair'.
Am I mad?

-
diggy:
I think Hinkel is a better all-around player than Caddis right now, but if his hamstring is tight he will not feature, and Caddis could. However, remember how unsettled he was against Barcelona. At left-back Wilson has to play for the rest of the season. Sorry Lee, but you have lost your place in the team.
fatherandbhoy:
At least they got that right. Niculae is a bit of an enigma in playing terms, but that is another discussion.
patnmick:
I can't believe the response to the tattie throwing. The Nakamura dog banner is more explainable by the general ignorance of the population to the finer points of differences in oriental and south-east asian cultures (my gran today explained how she would not eat Chinese food because they are 'evil bar stewards who slaughter students every year', but still a bit shocking.

Bloke109,
at risk of making similar simplistic turns of logic as them.....
their fathers and grandfathers would have been.
In an age where it's unacceptable to be openly bigoted, a lot of children of rangers fans have realised the failure of their forefather's religious intolerance and moved to the politically correct high ground. Hey, even one of their best friends is catholic.
But it is only for political correctness, not because of genuine inclusiveness.
In an attempt to define where the boundary's lie, I asked their opinion of the 'voodoo' banner at Ibrox.
Met with the same derision.
Jesus, some folk are just thick.

Hello folks, late at night but need to ask some questions
What are the chances on the following, anyone ?
Bobo is kept in, after another commanding performance
Caddis is kept in, after the best half from a right back seen this season, including a storming clearance when it looked certain Aberdeen would score
Evander Sno eventually gets another chance, given that players like Donati can simply disappear from the game and yet stay on the park for a full 90 minutes
Chris Killen actually does something on the park which you think will justify his appearance
????????
-
Larry - Bobo was safe & secure today, but GC will be straight back into the team. If Bobo should come in for anyone then it should be Mick, although I thought that he had a good game today.
There is absolutely no reason why Evander should not be given another chance. Apart from Barry Robson, he could replace any other centre mid at the moment.
Caddis has been spoken about in glowing terms for a number of years and he looks like an excellent prospect. Hinkel will go straight back into the RB position if he's fit. If he's not, then WGS might use Mark Wilson and bring back Lee Naylor at LB (assuming that he's fit).
The big question for next week revolves around Scott Brown. Barry Robson should definately play as he has great desire and will to win - he should have been in many weeks ago. Paul Hartley would have grounds to complain if he were dropped for Skoosh. Will Scott walk back into the team? I don't think that he should, but it will depend on PH's fitness.
Anyone know what time the main fight starts tonight/this morning?

Is Hopkins as good as he talks?
When I was a kid, I used to love sitting up watching Ali, Frazier, Norton, etc. with my old man.
I also loved the quality of Hagler, Hearns, Durant & Leonard fights. I got caught up in the Sugar Ray hype back then, but in hindsight Marvin Hagler was one of the best pound-for-pound fighters ever put on this planet.
He was the human equivalent of a tiger shark.
Think I'll stay up and cheer on the Welshman. If Tom Jones is going to sing Land of my Fathers, then it will be worth it anyway. Just saw Catherine Zeta, isn't it!

tommy,
Isn't Scott Brown still banned for next week ? And if not, then it would certainly be a bad move to bring him back given the recent form of both Robson and Hartley.
If Mcmanus was to drop out I'd personally like to see O'Dea in that position.... with Bobo beside him. But I agree that WGS will bring back Caldwell automatically... WGS has decided on the first eleven regardless of form. I'm thinking we will lose some players at the end of the season who have never been given a proper opportunity to show what they can do, sadly.

Did anyone else notice today that for a while McManus and Balde swapped centre-back positions? I can only imagine that since our right CB normally is the best position to distribute the ball forward, they fancied SM there for a while instead of DB.
