TITLE: Celtic 3-2 Rangers, 27 April 2008
AUTHOR: Paul67

BODY:
Scott McDonald scored twice and won a penalty, converted by Barry Robson, as Celtic beat Rangers 3-2, the first time they have come from behind to beat Rangers in 15 years.
McDonald opened the scoring after only three minutes after Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink set him clear with only Neil Alexander in the Rangers goal to beat.
Rangers responded to going behind positively and used two successive free kicks outside the Celtic box to apply pressure. Artur Boruc was forced to palm the ball away from his area after an early Rangers corner before Davie Weir headed an excellent Steven Davis corner into the net to pull Rangers level.
Shunsuke Nakamura almost gave Celtic the lead again with a free kick from a tight angle that Alexander punched away on the line before Rangers scored again.
Davis found Danny Cousin with a near-post corner, who headed Rangers into the lead on 29 minutes.
At this point Rangers were in the ascendancy with their extra man in midfield allowing them to force the play and pressure Celtic players into making mistakes. Aiden McGeady changed the pattern of play by committing defenders down the Rangers right and it was from such a move that Celtic drew level.
McGeady cut inside and passed to McDonald who had his back to goal. The Australian international knocked the ball two yards to his left before swinging round and cracking a shot high into the Rangers net. The goal was a mirror of Nakamura’s shot that was punched off the line against Rangers 11 days ago.
Nacho Novo missed what looked like a league winning chance in the second half when the ball broke free to him inside the box after Danny Cousin crossed from the left, but Novo shot wide; this was to be Rangers last genuine chance.
Early in the second half Scott McDonald got behind his defender inside the box but the chance was lost when he sent an awkward cross to Vennegoor of Hesselink. On 70 minutes the same situation presented itself but this time McDonald kept his body between defender and ball, and was barged to the ground by a clumsy Kirk Broadfoot; penalty to Celtic!
Barry Robson, who had another outstanding game, grabbed the ball this time and sent a thunderous shot straight into the middle of the goal, which Neil Alexander was wise to dive away from.
The final 20 minutes were nail biting for the home support but Celtic never looked like conceding a goal and ran the clock down with some intelligent possession football. In the final minutes McDonald twice won free kicks by shielding the ball and being barged to the ground for his efforts before a tired looking Steven Whittaker hacked Nakamura in a similar incident and received his second yellow card of the game in the 93rd minute.

WGS commentating on Arturs T-Shirt to the Daily Mail.
"Celtic manager Gordon Strachan made light of the antics of his goalkeeper Artur Boruc who revealed a 'God bless the Pope' T-shirt following the 3-2 win over R****rs at Parkhead.
After the game the Poland international, nicknamed the 'Holy Goalie' by the Celtic fans, took his goalkeeping shirt off to show the t-shirt with a picture of the Pope and accompanying slogan.
But Strachan joked: "He's not a bad lad, to be fair (the Pope). "If it was 'God bless Myra Hindley', I might have a problem."

I have been "STANDING UP" now for nearly three years and I have no intention "SITTING DOWN" which is` for losers and I really think that if we are not the losers, then it can only be one other team.
I wonder which team that can be?
Edward, keep your spirits up, there is always next year.
However, Edward, I am sure you know the formula by now, 2 in a row is achieved often, 3 in a row seldom and when it is, the team goes on to 9 in a row.
What a depressing thought for you.
STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS,

Great performance by the DJ about time we had some back to basics songs. Also under pressure at the end complemented the holy goalie who i fear by his reaction may have said his old firm farewell.
Very tense day but thank god we managed to win. Now over to hibs and motherwell. We may lose this league but at least we know what we have to fix next year.
We must ensure that we do not over look the things that must be addressed
Hinkle and naylor looked poor today and whilst caldwell was very good mcmanus was shocking at the first goal and has no distribution other than a pass to naylor.
Also if GG is on the go for £3million we have to say no thanks.
Robson caldwell and skippy all amazing.
Well done celtic

Couple of wee points - Neil Alexander looked very nervous to me in the tunnel (I was confined to Setanta). That can't have done him any good today.
David Weir's demeanour as he trudged off at half-time spoke volumes, I think. He looked a beaten man with 45 minutes to play.

I did not use the drought word with reference to our strikers - you did, are you a tabloid (or broadsheet) writer.
I personally have little faith in JVOH's ability. Although he has averaged 1 in 2 over the dozen or so games. Which i guess you cannot grumble at.
Samaras, have to say jury still out, seems to drift out of the danger area to often and to easily. £3M+, uncertain!
Was honking last week Vs Aberdeen goal apart when he got his chance to start.
So i will 100% stick to my original notion that i hope that skippy has got his confidence and shooting boots back on over the coming 3 weeks.

You said:-
"The other 2 dont look like weighing in with ,any goals at the moment."
I feel that is a ridiculous statement since Samaras scored last week and JVOH the week before.
So, if drought is not an accurate summary word for your assertion, what exactly do you mean by "at the moment"?
Nobody scores goals that count in the week between fixtures.

Just caught the game... a much too early start, for this part of the woild....It was... well...too early!
That, being said... on with the SHOW!
I am sorry, but if I must, then ....why not?
Now, do the following observations sound all too familiar?
"TACTICS? SMACKTICS!"
"It is NOT the FAULT OF THE MANAGER!
IT IS THE FAULT OF THE PLAYERS!"
and this from 3 weeks ago....
"The Celtic will smash the G.A. on Wednesday!"
"And THEY soitenly did, Ollie"
"Yes, Stanley,THEY soitenly did!"
And now comes the rhetorical ""Why"...
WHY?
Remember, when I said?...
"Because Celtic... they have touched bottom...
THEY HAVE HEARD THE RUSTLE OF ANGEL FEATHERS!"
and the following particular exclaimation, has been repeated by me,at times... during the past THREE MONTHS...
" I LUV GARY CALDWELL... Gary Caldwell is one of my FIRM FAVORITES!"
And all of these statements have been coming from a guy, who has NEVAH PLAYED THE GAME!
My only sport..besides GAWF.... being..... TEN PIN BOWLING!
I am feeling mighty vindicated.... SMUGITY! SMUGITY!
Although, I have been indeedly, prescient... I am not by any means.. Poifect!
I do admit to being ....probably.. Na!... the very FOIST... FLINGER of Fickle Flying Haberdashery, on this Forum!
A Premature Ejection,NOT to mention... a DEPLORABLE Rejection of FAITH!.... So, I will not Mention it!
Oh!Well!
I have inserted this regrettable action on my part... to show that even I ...can call it wrong...on occasion!
Todays, game?
Luvved it! Luvved it! Luvved it!
It had everything!
High DRAMA... High ANXIETY...
High Jinks!
The Jinky Part?....
Why Arthur's Crowning Crow..!Isn't HE SUMPTIN'?
How many games do we have to play?
Is it Four?
Anyway, I am confident that we shall win them all...
Howevvvvvvvvvvvvvvah!
I will leave the final denouement of this saga, nestling, in the lap of the Gods!

COMMENT-BODY:Hi Paul, I hope you don’t mind me posting this again I didn’t notice your new article comment :- )
It looks like the Fod are getting their December at long last; I just hope it takes a few points off them as it did to us. Given the choice I’d still rather be in their shoes, but wouldn’t be too confident about the next few games they have to play. Interestingly enough we have shown bottle when it counts, and rose to the occasion and got our 6 points. The Fod have tried to get away without losing and lost. Now both teams are in the position of not daring to drop points. We have what it takes, and believe we will accumulate the remaining 9 we need. Can the Fod do that? No, I don’t think so, as shown here today they are shaky, and it could well be, come next weekend that we indeed will push father ahead. We have the beating of Motherwell, I can see them losing away to Hibs, (after losing to Fiorentina).
3 defeats in a row for the Fod will be too much for them – the team, Wattie-face and the Orcs.
A complete meltdown is around the corner, it started last week, and we’ve put more coal on the fire.
It was a sweet result today. Well done to the team, the fans and Gordon Strachan.

Fair play, you're not the only one who doubts him in the Celtic support. He has been playing well for Holland recently also which will give him a springboard. It's only really been since January which we've seen a sustained run from him at Celtic as he's had a number of niggly injuries and I think if he can keep himself fit then he'd continue to be influential. He seems to be someone who is considered with a lot of repsect from the players and the coaching staff. I've always enjoyed hearing him speak as well as he seems like a guy who has his feet firmly in the ground.

COMMENT-BODY:Paul67....
On the subject of Caldwell, Wenger once said that a team is only as good as its midfield. Even the worlds best defenders (which I'm not saying we have) would struggle if they see too much of the ball and don't get adequate protection.
I think the introduction of Robson has made a big difference in all areas of the team and if Brown gets this difficult first season out of the way and gets plenty of games alongside Robson, building confidence and understanding, we may be onto something. I'm not sure about Donati. I can see he has something but as with Jarosik, I don't think we'll be seeing it regularly enough in the SPL. If we can get a decent return on him, it may be time for him to go back to Italy and play Robson and Brown as our regular midfield partnership.
With this in mind, I really hope we do 3-in-a-row because if we win this year, I can't see Rangers winning for the foreseeable future. Strachan has learned (maybe through fortune rather than judgement) how to beat Smith and we could be looking at four or five in a row.....
....here's hoping.

COMMENT-BODY:Rangers form over 90 mins in the previous 13 games.
Celtic 3 - 2 Rangers
Rangers 0 - 0 Fiorentina
Rangers 0 - 0 St Johnstone
Celtic 2 - 1 Rangers
Partick 0 - 2 Rangers
Sporting 0 - 2 Rangers
Dundee United 3 - 3 Rangers
Rangers 0 - 0 Sporting
Rangers 1 - 0 Celtic
Rangers 2 - 1 Hibs
Rangers 1 - 1 Partick
Dundee United 2 - 2 Rangers (Rangers will on penalties)
Werder bremen 1 - 0 Rangers
Their form is abysmal: 6 draws, 3 defeats, and won only 4. They would have two more wins if I went for the full time results rather than the standard 90 minutes but it's in 90 minutes which they'll have to win their remaining games not through penalty shoot-outs. their victories haven't been convincing either: they were barely in it against us, they were sluggish against hibs, and one of their victories was against lower league opposition. Sporting was well taken though.
With more injuries and suspensions and with this significant psychological blow it is highly likely that they'll drop more points. Not long left though so if they might be able to hang on. Hopefully we can win our remaining games.

COMMENT-BODY:well played celtic. a win was needed and a win was delivered. a special mention has to go to scott mcdonald who was superb. i can only recall one bad use of the ball. he played with heart, intelligence and no little skill. well done wee man. barry robson, after a shaky start where he gave the ball away (or a foul) in dangerous positions, he really came on to a game. always wanting the ball and trying to bring naka and mcgeady into the game.
aiden, as always a difficult task being double or triple teamed with little support, but was always dangerous when given something to work with.
naka- superb use of the ball after we scored the second. he showed his class controling the flow of play, winning fouls and passing the ball with great intelligence and economy. when u see movement off naka ( which is rare) you can really se his class. we don't take enough advantage of naka.
i'm a fan of gary caldwell but i don't think he had his best game today. he was losing his aerial battles in the first half and he gave the ball away needlessly with a couple of over ambicious passes.
saying that he did play a couple of superb passes that showed vision and ability. i fell gary is at a point where he has to fulfill his potential and eliminate the silly mistakes or he will fade away. he definately has ability, guts and a certain level of skill, but he needs to be consistant.
although i hate to say it , i think mick is the week link along with naylor ( who i feel isn't so bad defensively but is rank going forward).
whilst we were spirited we waste a lot of possession.
i have been rambling with bad spelling included. all i really want to say is i really hope we win this league! then we can all enjoy it together!
and i hope gordon is here next august and that he's been given sufficient funds to complete the team he's building. no more shortcuts please.

Zonal marking at corners is a terrible idea and has to go.
Having said that how did Weir score? he didn't seem to know where he was and the ball came off the back of his head.
How many fouls did they get when our player clearly played the ball first? Bug Jan had two, although he couldn't dispute his booking. Neither could Lee Naylor.
What an idiot Scott Booth is. He really does talk such mince. How about his observation that Rangers couldn't be tired because they started quickly. How did they finish, numpty?
How many fouls did wee Novo commit? Six, seven? I think there should be a rule about persistent fouling.
And what about Barry Bottler? I'd love to see the two Hibs players' bookings for dissent to see if they were any worse that he was all day.
Naka controlled the game in the last ten minutes. What a footballing brain he has.

COMMENT-BODY:Hilarious - a view from one of the dark sides highbrow sites
" FLUKES, FATALITIES AND FLAWED OFFICIATING
You sensed after the first ten minutes that this game was going to have to be one the hard way. A blatant offside goal and a stonewall penalty turned down showed exactly what we were up against. All the more credit to Rangers for turning it around to lead two one. Unfortunately it wasn’t just the officiating that was against us as McDonald fluked one over Alexander just before half time to send us in level.
The second half got no better though and we really looked up against it when Weir had to leave the field injured and was replaced by, of all people, Amdy Faye. Remember him? Yes he is still a Rangers player. With Weir off we didn’t look like ever getting a winner so it was a backs to the wall and defend it out. We didn’t look too bad at that though until, you got it, up steps the referee to give a penalty against a trip by Broadfoot, which was OUTSIDE the box.
When the penalty was dispatched we never looked like getting back into the game that got more and more frustrating as shown by Whittaker in extra time when he lunged in on Nakamura and landed a red card. Probably the last thing we needed with losing Weir as well. The race really hots up now but it is still in our own hands it just adds a little more pressure to the run in. "

Watched the rerun on Setanta when I arrived home, I could not believe what I was listening to from Scott Booth.
It so incensed me I had to email Setanta, below is the email I sent.
I won't hold my breath for a reply.
Dear Sir,
How much longer are we expected to put up with the blatant bias in the match commentary of Scott Booth? he could maybe at least try to appear neutral. He seems to want to dissect Celtics every move adding more negativity than I have ever heard from a commentator. If he cannot be professional enough to at least try and cover up his loyalties maybe he is not suitable for the job.
I waited until after a victory rather than a defeat to drop you a line so my judgement would not be clouded by disappointment, but this man is going to cost your company revenue if he is allowed to continue in this manner.

Particulary grating were references to Caldwell's "potential handballs" and "Cousin definitely not offside" after the slowm mo replay clearly showed him at least 3 yards off. £15 p/m is alot of money when you can't even bear to listen to the commentary!

I didn't see too much wrong with Booth's commentary today. I don't think he is biased, and although he sometimes has some comedy moments, he does fine. I remember Kevin Keegan having some crazy moments on commentary but the English took it in good humour. I don't see why we can't do the same with Scott Booth.

As for the point about Kevin Keegan, you deserve some lattitude when you were European player of the year at least once if not twice and one of your nation's best ever players. Keegan could talk with authority on playing on the biggest stages. Scott Booth is only there for his analysis ability and it's risible. I can only assume Setanta are paying peanuts and attract the proverbial as a result.

I didn't agree with some of his comments today - and thought he called a marginal offside decision far too harshly, but usually I think he is the fairest co-commentator in my recollection of Scottish football. He is allowed to disagree with us - and even get it wrong.
He also came straight out and said that Thomson was guilty of a "blatant dive" and I can't think of any other commentator who would have said so.

I swear to god - that is a genuine c&p direct from www.rangersmedia.co.uk.
Broadfoot in the Herald is nearly as bad - its not often a linesman gets a mention by name for a 'marginal' call.
"Amid this see-sawing spectacle, Craig Thomson exerted admirable authority. This, despite his assistant, Thomas Murphy, creating early tension by not raising his flag for the marginal offside call before McDonald's opening goal. Thomson's willingness to allow both teams to express themselves was a boon to a tigerish Celtic. They bit and clawed at their rivals and ultimately had Rangers at their mercy."
So there you are - Thomas MURPHY has apparently given us a wee break - congratulations to the Herald for not calling him 'Thomas bead-rattling, we fed and clothed him - why won't he go home MURPHY'
Anyway, the offside rule says that there must be DAYLIGHT between the attacker and defender before he can be considered offside. These things will no doubt even themselves out - by my reckoning we will need another key decision in each of our last three games to even up the damage that Mike McCurry has inflicted on us.

broadfoot is correct
thomson did exert admirable authority ..sadly only against celtic
the disparity in the foul count in the first 30 mins was astonishing
together with the exercising of blatant double standards
eg JVOH comes in from the side wins the ball..foul
Dailly same ..no foul
i could go on ad longum
lastly
LAST MAN / CLEAR GOALSCORING OPPURTUNITY ...Bentfoot had to go ..the only thing that was missing was no goalkeeper in front of him
Dailly handball .. no penalty ...
maybe we should be happy if the officials are not totally biased

He was playing today with an injury. Has a hamstring strain. You could tell he was holding back today and wasn't bombing beyond Naka like previous matches. Go easy on the guy. You might see Caddis next week i think so Andreas can be flying for the start of next season.

I thought we looked more solid when O'Dea came on AND when Hartley went off.
Naka, Skippy and Robson closed the game out perfectly. Also Aiden, of course. Ach, they were all heroes.
Neil Lennon is building up a good winning record as a coach.
Could it be that his more pragmatic approach to football complements Gordon's vision of attacking open play? Early days, though.
I wonder if anyone "in the know" can clarify Skippy's reaction to Mick at the second goal.
I wish we had another couple of games against them.

How Motherwell players are treated next week should be interesting. If they start picking up needless bookings once we are in control then it wouldn´s surprise me.

He seemed to lose his bottle a bit and got a lot of decisions wrong. I think we could have conceded a penalty for handball, and gained one (I think a bit of making things even happened), and various free-kick decisions were bemusing. He even missed an offside decision for 10 seconds or so.
It's a shame, but he had a bad game, and if he learns from it, that's the main thing.
