TITLE: Celtic Quick News Golf Day 2008 update AUTHOR: Paul67 DATE: 4/23/2008 09:42:00 PM ----- BODY: The SPL inconveniently announced their fixture plans yesterday minutes after I posted an article on the forthcoming Celtic Quick News Charity Golf Day, which takes place on Friday 4 July 2008 at Aberdour Golf Club in Fife. A day on the course for those who golf is followed by an excellent Celtic evening with a meal and after dinner speakers, so those like me, who don’t golf, can enjoy an excellent evening among some great Celtic fans. We will raise funds for Edinburgh Sick Kids and Aberdour Sport and Development Club U-16s. Once again we appreciate the support of 14clubs, custom made golf clubs at a fraction of the usual price. The cost of £50 for golfers and £25 for evening-only guests includes a three course meal and a charitable donation. If you would like to attend either the whole day or just the evening, email Taggsybhoy at taggsybhoygolf@googlemail.com. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger og COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 21:44 COMMENT-BODY:1st -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Ironbhoy COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 21:46 COMMENT-BODY:Come on the wee hoops....10 minutes left..! -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger canamalar COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 21:48 COMMENT-BODY:comeonthebabybhoys -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Thom The Thim COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 21:49 COMMENT-BODY:ManU gained another result for anti-football tonight.

Barca played them off the park, but displayed Celtic like tendencies in front of goal.

Still, no away goal conceded.

As to this years SPL.

In my mind I have long since declared the league null and void. Except of course if we manage to thwart all attempts to derail our season.

The signs have been there even before the season began. All this makes it more galling that some Celtic supporters have spent the year tearing into the manager and selected players, instead of circling the wagons and supporting our club.

Their absence from this blog recently, a kind of rallying by default, is too little, too late.

I sincerely hope that all that has happened this year will galvanise the club and forge a steely determination amongst the staff to vanquish everything that is put before us this year. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger nelsbhoy COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 21:53 COMMENT-BODY:thom the thim

It's that new fangled Cricket League where there was an auction before it started to see who played for who. All the teams had a certain amount to spend and they could spend it on whoever they wanted. I think the top player was Andrew Symonds who was bought for over a million dollars! Not sure if he gets the money or not.

Basically you have the worlds best players scattered around these Indian teams. It's the shortest form as well in 20/20 so even for people who don't like cricket the games are quite exciting. Lost of 4s and 6s, but the 'purists' (in other words the old English farts) don't like it.

Good post.

This issue was overshadowed by the possible SPL extension however as I posted on Wednesday (see below) this for me is the biggest story of the week.

Since when has it become common practise for referees to re-assess minor incidents from a game?

Red Cards yes, everything else no.

Nothing the SFA Refs do is not done of the cuff. You can be assured everyone knew this statement was going on the internet. Why?

Consider the numerous errors favouring another Glasgow team yet no statements admitting human error.

Makes you wonder if this was orchestrated by the SFA to show the world that we get bad decisions in our favour also.

Yet no mention I take it of the "goal" disallowed two minutes earlier?

Paranoid? I am now! -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Kingoh COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 22:57 COMMENT-BODY:BhoySean

You won't last long on this site with an attitude like that.Regardless how well he plays you must slag off Gary Caldwell, don't you know that?!

Just back from the youth cup final. The thing that struck me was that some of the Celtic players were dead on their feet with 20 to go. At least 3 had cramp by 75mins. Rangers looked much fitter.Should still have won it but tried to score a second goal in injury time rather than taking the ball to the corners. Only going to be one winner after that. Kevin Cawley looks the part though.

Was also at the reserve game on Monday.(No,I don't have anything better to do!) Some decent young players in the team.Unfortunately the fringe/first team squad players were less impressive. Doumbe was ok considering and Elvis strolls through these games and talks the less experienced through the game. Both the manager and Neil Lennon in attendance so they may well be planning for next season. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Gogo1967 COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 22:58 COMMENT-BODY:Long time lurker but FINALLY got some joy with the dreaded "Blogger". Well someone has to defend the guy it can't be easier going out every week knowing a lot of people don't rate you. He's part of the best defense in the SPL with much better defensive record than Rangers despite playing a considerably more attacking style in contrast to Ranger's ultra defensive approach to games.

We also have the top goal scorers up front as well which might suggest that our problem this season has been a lack of goals from midfield. If McGeady can get himself on the score sheet more frequently and our center mids started scoring then I think we'll be fine. Naka has a decent goal return considering he missed a large chunk of the season.

Paul

I've watched all of Koki's games on CH67 since he's came and he's been extremely impressive. His technique is brilliant and so is his distribution. He seems to be able to make defense splitting passes with ease. I think we're onto the new Naka and it might be the case that Koki is a better footballer than Naka was at his age. It's still early but extremely promising I think.

I quite like Mark Miller as well in midfield. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger pablophanque COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 23:14 COMMENT-BODY:Kingoh, no need to apologies for bringing news of all our yoofs. My thanks.

I feel defenders generally peak in their late twenties/early thirties and for this reason I think Caldwell and McManus are likely to get better especially since they both seem to show a desire to work hard in training. By bringing in a top class defender to partner one of them I think it would ease a considerable burden and as a result I think we'd see much more confident defense. I don't have the statistics to hand but I feel that your conclusion that we have the "best defence in the SPL" might be a bit of a red herring. I wonder if you'd come to the same conclusion if you were to measure the 'goals conceded' to 'attacks to be defended' ratio?

The recent game against Motherwell at Parkhead is a case in point. In defence of his team, the manager was quick to point out the number of chances created versus the number of chances conceded. I would argue that this in itself is a pretty damning indictment of the defence.

And I think this is where the heart of the problem lies. For a side that's developed the habit of winning games by the odd goal over the past couple of seasons, in games where we've struggled to score more than a single goal, the concession of an odd goal has really hurt us.

The use of stats to talk up this particular defence is simply papering over the cracks.

Entirely hypothetical I know but I wonder how this back four might fare were they to do as much defending as a mid-table SPL side?

Paul67 - you mentioned earlier that we should expect a fairly signficant turnover of players this close season. Are we to infer that we will be watching team #4 next season? If so, I would ask the question - where is the continuity? Four seasons, four teams - not good. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Kojo COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 23:53 COMMENT-BODY:Pablo

You have put forward some good points and I agree with them to an extent. I think part of the reason why we haven't had many attacks against us recently is because the defense have been doing their job pretty well by cutting them out pretty early and we have had bette protection from midfield. Boruc could have slept through these recent weeks.

I would accept that earlier in the season Boruc did save the defense quite regularly though, but the same could go for Rangers as well who have had McGreagor bail his defense out on a number of occassions.

The Rangers team lines up with 4 across the back with 5 midfielders with none of them really being described as the most cavalier. On top of this they usually have 2 of their midfielders sitting particularly deep. Celtic in contrast have two fairly attacking full backs with a midfield consisting of two very attack minded players. There is only really one defensive midfielder in the team and even then when it's Donati he isn't really that defensive. I believe this would suggest that the Celtic defenders have a lot more responsibility in contrast to Rangers and yet they have conceeded less.

Stats don't tell the whole picture but I do think that Walter's much praised defense isn't as good as it's made out to be. Their is more room for error when you have an extra man or three helping you out back there.

I do want to stress the point though that I'd like to see a top class central defender signed in the summer. I think we can do better in this area but I just wanted to show a bit more support for the much maligned defense as I think they're doing a better job than they're credited for. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger oldtim67 COMMENT-DATE:23/04/08 23:55 COMMENT-BODY:Pablophange.

You really have an over-inflated sense of your own importance.

I am not a member of any clique, nor do I know any contributor to CQN, however I find your constant negativity and bitterness somehow inappropriate in a Celtic supporter, and no, that doesn't mean you have to accept everything the team or manager or board says or does.

I know you're a Celtic supporter - your paranoia gives you away! - but try supporting once in a while.

And, sorry to say, we're not all waiting with baited breath for your pearls of wisdom after Sunday. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger PJBhoynyc COMMENT-DATE:24/04/08 06:09 COMMENT-BODY:Nae Shouts@ 04:59

On the football section of the BBC website there is an article by Keir Murray titled "When Rangers Met Fiorentina in 1961"

The journalist states that "in reaching that stage of the inaugural cup, Rangers became the first British team to contest a European final."

Well, as every self-respecting anorak knows, this is completely wrong.

Birmingham City played, and lost to Barcelona in the 1960 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final.

They also lost to Roma in 1961, the year Rangers lost to Fiorentina in the Cup Winners Cup Final.

Our own Bertie Auld featured for Birmingham in that Roma final.

If we really want to be pedantic, the very first Inter Cities Fairs Cup Final was contested by Barcelona and the City of London in 1958!

Come on Mr Murray (any relation?) at least check your Evening Times Wee Red Book before going to print! -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Irving Washington COMMENT-DATE:24/04/08 08:36 COMMENT-BODY:Morning folks.

Nothing to do with revisionism.

It was obvious, to me anyway, that everything that could be done, would be done to prevent us retaining the title. Starting with the loaded, early fixture list, Yellow Saturday and all the other influences.

All teams have spells where they perform poorly, due to one reason or another. However, we had no cushion for this as they were supported all the way through any slumps.

Of course we have some players who are not top drawer, that's where we operate, but there was no justification for the constant negativity displayed by Celtic supporters, who seemed to keep their powder dry until a bad result happened.

I take the recent absence of some posters as being as far as they can go in getting fully behind the club during this dangerous time in football history. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Paul67 COMMENT-DATE:24/04/08 09:39 COMMENT-BODY:Gordon, perhaps the journo meant to say 'the first quintessentially British team'.

Interesting article in the Times by Phil Gordon about the possibility of Celtic consulting UEFA about the possibility of our refusing to play Dundee Und on 22nd May if we are forced to give up JVOH, Boruc and Samaras for the European Championships....This might well have consequences. As Lawrence Donegan says in the Guardian, the SPL has lost any pretence to integrity. More fools them.

The Football Associations London XI team that took part in that first Inter Cities Fairs Cup was composed of players from Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Brentford, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Leyton Orient, Millwall, QPR & West Ham.

They had English, Welsh, Scottish & Six Counties players in their ranks - now that is what I call a quintessentially British team!

If Mr Murray is lurking...it's time to correct that article! --------
