Brain bleedingly bad from Celtic today making the three points all the more precious.

Make no mistake this was as bad as we've been all season.

The pedestrian, sluggish nature of Celtics play especially after going 1 up was more akin to a pre season friendly than a do or die match on which your whole season hinges.

Watched the last 5 mins from behind the couch and am now exhausted and off to bed.(2am here in Sydney)

Delighted with the points - we were the best team by some way but we were again unable to fashion many clear cut chances.

Bobo was an effective stopper and was invaluable in defending the long high ball for the last 10 mins.

Paul Caddis had some second half - including a match-winning tackle in our 6 yd box. One error - failure to pull back for Giorgios - would have been an open goal.

    Good runout for Mark Wilson.

We now have a week to recover and prepare - but first, hope the players enjoy a great Saturday night out - it's been a very successful week - they deserve it.

Oh by the way - well done Gordon.

Three points in the bag. Don’t forget games in hand mean nothing until they are played.

I received an interesting e-mail today from an Australian friend whose wife is employed in the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry; she is employed as a translator.

Apparently the Japanese Government have been made aware of the racist abuse of one of their citizens residing in Scotland. (Now I wonder who that might be?)

Representation on behalf of that citizen is on the cards.

I have no idea what the ramifications of such a ‘representation’ would entail, but if I were in the Whisky or Golf Industry of Scotland I’d be putting as much distance between myself and RACISM as I possibly could.

Wouldn’t want to be tarred with that brush.

Tomorrow we have the Sunday Herald’s apology to look forward to.

    Front page?

    Nah me neither.

You caught me out there Paul, but I’m still going to post :- )

Top o the league, an’ about time too.
After the next Fod game we’ll STILL BE TOP O’ THE LEAGUE, by a couple of points more. We’ll be putting on pressure that the Fod can do well without. They won’t like it when they’re looking up at us and know that THEY can’t afford to drop any points.
It been a difficult time for us all to say the least, but now that chink of light we saw after the last game is now a bit wider and brighter. 3 in a row is def’ still on. Trash the Fod next week and we’re in with a shout. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

    Hail Hail

An away win for Hibs against the Arabs tomorrow will keep it as tight as possible. They will then take pole position for the UC place. Motherwell and Dundee Utd play against each other next week while Hibs are away to Aberdeen. Rangers then take on Hibs after our game against them next week.

The UEFA cup might yet be our salvation

Does hitting the post constitute a shot on target? That raises an interesting issue on what a shot on target is. I would say yes, hitting the post is on target, but another side of me believes that the aim of the game is to get the ball in the net and if the ball hits the post rather than the net then it's off target.

I missed Samaras' chalked off goal. Did Killen commit a foul or was Brines being Brines?

I didn't realise that Mulgrew plays for Southend, it didn't click when I saw the name. Free Kick too. I thought that was a cert, Southend must have had the longest away trip today for any team and Carlisle was going for first place, they did have a player sent off though. That was £128 on a £3 line that I lost. And here was me telling DBBIA a cheap place to drink in Carlisle.

I'm a bitter Bitter drinker now, at least we won.

Nervy performance today But the result is all taht counts. Anything dropped would have undone Wednesday's good work.

We defended well until the last few minutes. The midfield did not flow today, too many missed passes and some very poor first touches on display. Neither striker played well but we got the goal and tha's what conts.

I thought Paul Caddis was superb when he came on. A couple of great tackles and willing to get forward too.

What was the story with the Killen substitution? He seemed to be ready for at least 10 minutes before coming on?

The injury situation is a worry for next weekend. Need to wait and see who is fit. Another great game awaits ...

I watched the game on telly and as far as I could see both disallowed goals, ours and theirs, looked okay to me.

    However….

Shot on target??? Like you, I’m of the mind that an inch is as good as a mile when it comes to a miss, but hitting the woodwork... is somehow on target.

    Psychology (?)

I personally don’t attribute statistics, in sport, much credence; in football (stating the obvious) the only statistic that really counts is how many points your team accrues.

Walter Smith appears to share the same view as me. Unfortunately.

Just back from the game. I never thougjht I would ever want any player in a Celtic strip subbed for Killen but to-day I did. GS's stategy is to have the sub stripped, then jacket put back on, then the compulsory 5 mins educational work on the clipboard.

I reckon 10 mins is average.

    Cheers.

P.S. I was wrong, Mcdonald was awful but Killen even worse.

Good too get the 3 points today.

A bit dissapointed with the amount of empty seats there seemed to be,maybe some folk have chucked it for the season.Up to them i suppose.

Caddis looks like he's got what it takes to become a pretty decent player, lets hope he gets a chance.

    We shall not be moved.

ps. I would say that a shot on target would mean that the shot would have been a goal if not saved by the keeper or blocked by defender (or saved by a defender in Cuellars case). Therefore hitting the post isnt on target IMHO.

Hinkel has a hamstring injury but I am confident with Caddis at right back, I just hope if Naylor is healthy that WGS is not tempted to move Young Marcus to RB, I would prefer Caddis to start at Rb and Marcus at Lb.

Robson was good again and hope he starts all the games till the end of the season.

There is hope if we go by Ranger's form over the last 9 games,

    Celtic 2 - 1 Rangers
    Partick 0 - 2 Rangers
    Sporting 0 - 2 Rangers
    Dundee United 3 - 3 Rangers
    Rangers 0 - 0 Sporting
    Rangers 1 - 0 Celtic
    Rangers 2 - 1 Hibs
    Rangers 1 - 1 Partick
Dundee United 2 - 2 Rangers (Rangers will on penalties)
    Werder bremen 1 - 0 Rangers

There is some mixed form going on here: 4 draws over 90 minutes, lost 2, and won 4. Some of their victories haven't been convincing either: they were barely in it against us, they were sluggish against hibs, and one of their victories was against lower league opposition. Their win against Sporting was well taken though.

Obviously that doesn't tell the whole picture but it makes us wonder how they will cope with the up coming pressure especially as they're starting to suffer some injuries. Playing two games a week isn't easy so they may drop some points.

    Then again so may we...

The delay for Killen coming on might have been because McDonald almost scored. Gordon was probably waiting to see how he performed after that chance before making the change.

    The Narrowbhoat Tim

The only concern I have with Caddis is he's pretty small. Rangers have a lot of big guys who are good in the air so I'm not sure how well Caddis would do against elbows. I'd prefer to have Hinkel back generally, he was excellent in the last two games against them.

  • At 19/04/08 18:12, Blogger Gordon_J said…

Hinkel would be a miss if he is not fit, but young Paul Caddis is an able deputy and has earned a chance with some good displays.

And a shot hitting the post is not on target for me - the target is the net!

    BS

Isn't elbows injured for the next game against us? I thought Caddis was outstanding today that touch that saved a certain goal was excellent. Him and Robson had a lot of Spirit today, always like a player that takes stitches and comes back on for more.

On Brines I think he is rubbish but looking at the replay of the goal that Aberdeen had chalked off I didn't see too much wrong with that one, likewise there was nothing wrong with Samaras chalked off goal either. He is incompetent
    plain and simple.

3 in a row here we come.

Back from the match. A nervy performance and we were nowhere near our best.

Disappointed in the crowd too, both in numbers and noise produced. Still 3 points earned and that keeps things ticking over to next week's game. Atmosphere will take care of itself there.

Pass marks today to Caddis, Balde, Robson, Aiden and Naka. Reasonable effort from Wilson and Samaras. Skippy needs a goal.

Off out to my eldest son's 21st tonight. He was born the day after a 1:1 home draw with Dundee united but we won our next 3 fixtures after he arrived.

I'll take that as an omen. To be honest, I'd take anything as an omen, even a Mike Oldfield LP.

Not a particularly great performance, worrying that we just sat back for the last ten minutes.

From what i seen we are unlikely to win all our remaining games.

Samaras was poor his goal apart, our tactic seems to just be pass to aiden

Bad news if hinkel misses the next game he has been improving each week.

Skippy's first touch really reminds me of Craig Beattie.

I would bring back caldwell next week - never thought i would say that.

McManus was poor today to many times he punts it and challenges his own players for headers

Good to see big Bobo's Aerial power again. I'd love to see him v McCulloch. I just wish we could train him not to knock the ball straight down to the oppositions midfield. A good team will really punish you if you do that.

I thought Caddis was excellent today, looked a bit like the mascot thought. At least he had the energy and enthusiasm a mascot would have if given a game.

More power to WGS the band-wagon is back on track. Not exactly an express train, but we're top of the league and they're no!

I'm willing to give the team some slack given their mid week exertions.

By the way, I thought Naka was outstanding in the second half today. He fought the hardest for the ball, his passing was excellent and he kept a calm head when others were nervous. Naka for captain ;)

Todays first half lethargy did not surprise me.

Ah remember Tony Mowbray commenting on a lacklustre Hibs performance in the wake of a European game, when he said it took them 20mins to get going because of mental tiredness,

The other night took its toll on the players and am just deligted with the victory.

The huns will be suffering physical and mental tirednes after facing Fiorentina when they come back to our cauldron next week.

Blow them away in the first half they will not recover.

Young Caddis has a quick brain ah like im lots.

Big Bobo made a usually dangerous aerial threat,Lee Miller look out of his depth.

It was with some trepidation I looked for the score after work today, and I have to say, the grin hasn't come off my face since. Yes, by all accounts a poor performance, but 3 points is 3 points and at the end of the day, points mean prizes.
Bhoy sean gave Rangers' last 9 results, and they aren't great. All we need is two draws or a draw and a loss or better. Possible? Oh yes. The most important factor in the league IMO is McGregor's injury. He has pulled off some good saves for them, in the SPL as well as Europe, and I can see points being dropped.
The BBC gave the stat that Celtic have scored 12 times this season in the last 5 mins. Why Oh Why would any of us doubt this team's character and perseverance? I can admit to being doubtful(though my towel was most deffinately still on) but now, why not? We are top of the league after all...

'Twas down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I.

    In squadrons passed me by.
No pipe did hum, no battle drum
    Did sound its dread tattoo
But the Angelus bell o'er the Liffey's swell
Rang out in the foggy dew.

We may NOT win the prize, ...but then again,.....who knows ?
Today was another skirmish in a long war.
We achieved all we could have hoped for.
We move on with hope in our hearts.

Ah, back through the glen I rode again,
And my heart with grief was sore
For I parted then with valiant men
Whom I never shall see more
But to and fro in my dreams I go
And I'd kneel and pray for you
For slavery fled, O glorious dead,
When you fell in the Foggy Dew.

A big hello to everyone on CQN.

I haven't been able to post for more than a week owing to travel, a family bereavement and pressure of work (and the fact that the power unit for my dear old Mac took a week to come home after Terminal 5 shenanigans).

    I have missed posting.

I thought I had better get back on as soon as possible as I don't want to be accused of being a glory hunter by delaying and only coming on when we take this title.

How many points a season is belief beyond logic worth to a team? People complain constantly about religion meriting no part of the festival that is football, but belief is a huge advantage and is very much part of what makes Celtic special.

I was very annoyed at my boss this week when I told him about the 'The Famine's Over' garbage from the visiting support the other night. He said: "Oh yeah, and like the Celtic supporters weren't singing equally offensive songs…".

I have much work to do there.

It's disappointing because I had occasion not long after joining his company to travel to and from Paris in a CL week, sharing the flight out with Man United fans and the flight home with Liverpool fans.

He is well connected at Liverpool (or was under the old regime) although he is really a rugby man. I told him that I had been surprised at the stark difference in atmosphere on the two flights. The Man U fans were very young, offensive, bevvied, aggressive, and a total pain. Although I shared an RER from the airport with a bunch from the occupied six that were dead on, so I'm not tarring all of their support with the same brush.

The Liverpool guys on the way home were bevvied but I was really impressed by how considerate they were towards the families travelling back from Disneyland, the cabin crew and everyone else on board. A few stepped out of line, but their companions were all the police they needed.

My boss said: "It doesn't surprise me at all. There is no comparison."

Why then does he feel the need to perpetuate the myth that we and they are two sides of the same coin? It was never true.

In 2008 it is less true than at any point in our history.

    God bless all here.

    God bless Celtic.

I am absolutely exasperated by Gordon Strachan.
He had Gary Pendry lecture Killen for 9 minutes before he put him on.

Clipboard in hand ,he went through point after point, then flipped the clipboard over, and went on to details on the other side.

    It produced no tangible benefit.

Killen is mince ,but Bamber Gascoigne would have struggled to remember 9 minutes of details.

What made it even more pointless was that Caldwell brought on a sub and changed Aberdeens shape ,whilst Killen was being briefed.

It took them all of 50 seconds to put on there sub.

The guy went on the right wing ,started to cause us problems and Wilson had two men to mark.

Not at any stage did Mr Strachan instruct Aiden,to to get back and help out Wilson.
After 5 mins of us being outplayed down that side, Aiden finally cottoned on and put is a couple of tackles.

I just can't take much more of this .The mince is now tripe.

We are winning inspite of the manager ,not because of him.

Oh! and i thought Bobo had a magnificent game.Especially ,considering the length of time he has been out.

Glad to have you back. Was thinking of you earlier this evening when I was catching livescore updates from Spain. The family have the TVs tuned to garbage tonight so football is not possible for me.

    Paul, fellow CQN'ers

Altough the performance today was not great, we can take heart from the game on Wednesday night. We are, in general footballing terms, far superior to Rangers and a 2-1 win for us flattered them hugely.

The story of our seson has been finishing.... we have been very poor. With better finishing we would ahve won every game at home this season, and the SPL would have been all over in our favour.

In short, there are clear issue that need sorting, but the man to sort them out is without a shadow of doubt is WGS. We have the money to spend to dramaticly improve the team, squad size is good, what we need over the summer are 3-5 players to improve the 1st team.

Without a shadow of doubt the priority is 1 or 2 strikers, and i am not so sure Sameras is the answer. Remember how lethal Pavlyuchenko was against us? Thats the type of player i would like to see at CP. We can afford these players, we just need to get them to the club.

Next, central midfield - we need someone who can cut it in the SPL like Hartley and Robson, yet turn it on with the finesse of Naka. The steriotypical African central midfielder would be nice, someone like Jean Makoun at Lille would not come cheap, but would be the kind of player who would lift the whole club.

Left back. Lee Naylor is a terrific defender, but has shortcomings going forward. In the SPL this is manifested as a lack of support for Aiden and in the CL it is poor distribution putting the team under pressure -his only strength is crossing, which he cannot do as often as we like. As Pompey sem keen to sign him, i would suspect we will turn in a nice profit on him in the summer. Taye Taiwo of Marseille seems to be the man we want to fill his boots, early 20's and a former target of Pompey. He seems a good player but is attracting interest.

Next, central defence. Someone with good distribution, a goal threat and physical presence. If we try to sign van Buyten of Bayern again and succeed i will be over the moon. He takes the best assets of Bobo (size strength uncompromising), Caldwell (passing, "composure") and Mick (Goalscoring, leadership).

To summerize, i would say that regardless of what happens over the next few weeks, Celtic will be stronger next season. There is no way that any manager is ever satisfied with any level of expenditure, and WGS would have been heckling SSM to pull out the stops in summer 2007 - which did not happen. Summer 2008 will be different.

We still have a better group of players than Rangers, and the resources to improve on that squad. That extra 5-10% in the final third can convert some of the close shaves/draws into wins and big wins. I think we will make it happen.

    Thanks very much man.

    Just for you:

    Atlético Madrid 1-3 Betis
    Zaragoza 2-0 Recreative de Huelva
    Barcelona 0-0 Espanyol

All games kicked off at seven o'clock our time.

Barça need to win this derby as much as we needed to win on Wednesday night.

Seville kick off in half an hour against Almería. If the scores stay the same and Seville win, they'll be in a CL position once again, an utterly remarkable achievement for Manolo Jiménez after the death of Antonio Puerta in August and the departure of Juande Ramos for Tottenham.

As the presenter on Radio Nacional just pointed out, this means that for one night only the Seville fans are all supporting Betis.

    It's a funny old game.

Just in from the game and not read back after a tour of Glasgow due to roadworks and a shakey driver. My thoughts are that the team did not seem up for it and either did the fans.

I described it to a mate as possible the worst gam eof the season (result not included)

Young Paul looks the part but we cant play with 2 small full backs as Aberdeen today put every high ball onto Mark and if we were to play the huns next week with 2 small full backs then they would just fling it into the corners.

so Paul needs to get his head up and not be to Gallus. Probably a bit churlish after the great work he done to get into the position but if squared it we would have been 2 up.

Georgios a good impact player but so far not a £3m starter.

Terry O if your on I hope your studying!!!!!

I could not agree more. I came out of the Jock Stein singing Three In A Row and people looked at me as if I had sprouted horns. Even my son crossed the road.

I'm sure many were deflated with the sub-standard performance but then again we don't know what defines or qualifies 'standard' these days.

Hopefully everyone will be back on board by next Sunday after the darnel are dumped twice between now and then.

Have to disagree with two things

    1. Strachan is the man to take us forward.

Sorry we may have better technical players but we have been poor this year with to many lightweights and bizarre tactical blunders.

He has wasted enough money. Don't get me started on Donatie what a waste of money and space.

Yes we will run the Huns close or I hope we do but in my view Strachan should go.

The board will have seen the empty seats today. They are freezing the season book prices in an attempt to encourage us to renew. Most of us will as of course we like our seats and we sit beside our mates.

However the tide has turned lose this league and he is out.

I support Celtic with all my heart but I’m not a supporter of Strachan simple as that.

I actually like the man a lot. I was standing front row at Rugby Park when he took the wee lads on the pitch and saw the passion and pride he has for the club but as a coach and manager I think he is poor.

My personal view is the freeze is to soften the impact of Strachan staying. I hope I am wrong. O’Leary is not the right man Moyes or Keane perhaps. My personal favourite is Mowbray.

Secondly re Naylor he is an average defender who has cost us plenty this season. He suffers from having no competition

The negligence of not having full back cover I lay at the door of Strachan and lawell.

I will be slaughtered here but if we lose this league to the Huns I want Strachan sacked and lawell out the door with him.

We have gambled big time and are hoping for snookers to win this league, when we should have walked it.

The team has not played like a team Wednesday excluded for many games.

The lack of insight into purchases is criminal and the purchase of dross has been by in large consistent.

We are all united behind Celtic but I fear the Strachan supporters amongst those Celtic supporters who actually go to games I repeat go to games are in my view in the minority. I do concede however that on this fantastic site they are though in the majority.

He has the CL semi-final against Man U.

Eto'o just missed a great chance at the death, but forgot to keep his eyes open when going for the header.

    Bojan has just missed another.

It looks like this is going to end 0-0. Espanyol have offered nothing, like a Celtic Park opponent in the SPL.

This result will hurt the Barça fans more than in other years, when Espanyol have been a bit of a joke to them. Rijkaard's coat is definitely on a shoogly peg, but he will still have the CL campaign, if not to redeem himself, then at least to go out on a high.

I have heard Mourinho's name mentioned as a replacement, but not nearly as much as that of Real Madrid fan Rafael Benítez.

0-0 in Barcelona. White handkerchiefs abound.

Xavi gets yellow for protesting to the ref about the length of added time.

Definitely, but more likely to be August than July. Could be up at the start of June too, although I'm trying to convince Mrs First to let me go back to Brazil then.

I am also a possible interloper at the CQN golf day.

I'm intrigued. Is it Eddie O?

    Narrowbhoat.
From my seat in the North stand I had a clear view of the obvious hand ball which caused Aberdeen`s `goal` to be disallowed. Likewise, it was fairly obvious that the ref was not allowing Samaras` free kick to be taken quickly and the Aberdeen players let it go. So the ref, although poor at times, got those to right.
We lacked imagination today but Cadis made a difference wth his simple but very effective approach. The same could be said of Bobo. Tricky for Strach because Hinkel is getting better with each game and Wednesday was Caldwell`s best game of the season. Skippy is knackered and needs a rest. Samaras is fine but looks uncertain about his role.Aiden needs to add maturity of mind to his sublime skills.Wilson is better than Naylor and makes space for McGeady.Naka is just pure class but most effective when in the middle.Robson is a great man to have in your team. So,all in all, a dull but successful game which, perhaps surprisingly, gives me belief for the remaining games.
BTW met the BB Clique Gang today. They are an excellent bunch and the Deuchars was the best I have tasted. One goal, three points, top spot. Can`t be bad.

BoltonBhoy would be delighted. We need Ambrosian tendencies to eclipse Blairentian ones.

At our family funeral this week, we sang the Salve at the graveside and it kind of turned into a battle of loudness and clear Latin between Spaniards and White Fathers.

    We won 3-2.

WG your lucky your son still walks with you never mind cross the road. I m only allowed in the same road as teh cubs when either driving them to somewhere they want to go (every night) or when they need money (every night).

gweedorebhoy dont want to but into a debate between you and Bobbo but can you please tell me what skills and experience Tony Mowbray and Roy Keane have which Gordon does not.

Davie Moyes yes he has produced the goods in that he has kept a team up in the upper level of the epl a bit like MoN did as well but the other 2 are too much of a risk.

Unless yo ucan tell me differently I believe Gordon has taken teams higher in the epl than any of those 2.
