TITLE: Defeat for Motherwell will suit Celtic AUTHOR: Paul67 DATE: 4/26/2008 12:06:00 PM ----- BODY: Even if Celtic win tomorrow, we still need another two SPL teams to take points of Rangers, so a keen competition for third place is important. Motherwell have a point advantage and two games in hand over both Dundee United and Hibs so a win over United and Fri Park in the 12:30 kick off today would go a long way to achieving their objective. After today, Motherwell have five games to play, one against Celtic and two against Rangers, games which HIbs and Dundee United will hope Motherwell lose, before their last game against Hibs. I’m hoping for a United win at Fir Park followed by a Hibs win at Pittodrie, which would have all three teams fighting for every point, including, of course, Motherwell against us next week. I wish I could find some reason to believe St Mirren have something to play for as they face Rangers at home in the last week of the competition (under both scenarios), but the chance to finish 10th instead of 11th does not hold the same attraction as a few days on the Continent next season. But, I suppose as they cannot be relegated (my preferred status for this club), we should hope that they find the prospect of a few win bonuses sufficiently appealing. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger loumacarisbettingslip COMMENT-DATE:26/04/08 12:09 COMMENT-BODY:champions -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger greenlion2 COMMENT-DATE:26/04/08 12:11 COMMENT-BODY:aahhh blogger.

Our strikers need to work hard tomorrow closing down their defenders. Their distribution was poor on Thursday and we can win the ball back to keep the pressure on.

All leave has been cancelled.

The populace are leaving nothing to chance and the elderly and the under 14’s are being prepared for evacuation. The national guard have been mobilised and the Chief of Police Michael Cruess, his Deputy Chief, Joseph Popovich and Tom Kearney, Executive Assistant have once more urged the population not to panic.

Connecticut, Cheshire may be separated from Cheshire England by some three thousand miles or so but to quote their Police Chief, “better aye ready”.

Meanwhile, on this side of the pond, Cheshire police - England, are also leaving nothing to chance.

They are even going to the extent on inoculating their k-9 squads (the dogs) for Rabies. When questioned on this matter a spokesman for the troops said “better aye ready”.

Sources from within the massed, and testosteroned up forces, speculate that their Chief, Peter Fahy (who some sources say is a secret member of Opus Dei (like one of his predecessors) – though this cannot be confirmed as yet) is champing at the bit to redress earlier slights against his forces sexual preferences. Other sources have been heard to whisper that he, (the chief the one that might just be secret Opus Dei), said his force “will bend for nobody, they do not seek confrontation but should it be presented they are ‘aye ready’ and ‘no prisoners’ will undoubtedly be the cry – by his forces - should the need arise”.

I didn't hear it very clearly owing to:

a. poor reception
b. dishwasher
c. Mrs First going on about tomato puree or something
d. weans.

However, the consensus among Murdo MacLeod, James Traynor and Richard Gordon seemed to be that Walter Smith was cunningly trying to construct a siege mentality by convincing his club that no one liked them (thought they knew that and didn't care).

Also, they said he was entirely correct to have a go at Peter L because, obviously, this had nothing to do with "sporting integrity" (chortle, chortle), and everything to do with wanting to gain an advantage for Celtic for making Rangers play 100 games in a week.

I was waiting for Murdo at least to point out that Rangers had benefited from our fixture congestion in October-November and again in early December when we twice had to play six games in a fortnight, dropping points, going out of the CIS cup, picking injuries and bookings and suffering mental and physical tiredness.

They engineered a break: now it's pay-back time but they want to rearrange things to make life easier for themselves.

It's a simple point, but no one brought it up as far as I could hear.

They thought that Smith was right to have a go because Peter Lawwell didn't say: "We want Rangers to play lots of games in a short space of time to gain an advantage." -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Celtic_First COMMENT-DATE:26/04/08 15:58 COMMENT-BODY:Traynor referred to this as "verbal tennis" between Peter L and Smith.

Martin Bain's baseless, petulant rant on behalf of Rangers was a monument to demagoguery, fulfilling the primary criterion of that black art by telling his constituents exactly what they wanted to hear, his argument loaded with self-interest but seemingly devoid of the breadth of thought befitting a chief executive.

He goes on

Bain then questioned the SPL's insistence on preserving "the integrity" of their competition by producing a schedule that requires the Ibrox side – if failing to make the European final – to play four league matches in the last eight days. "Rangers are the only club being asked to play four games in eight days, so there is no sporting integrity".

He seems to have taken no notice of the fact that his club is the only one of the top six with seven outstanding fixtures to the others' four. At least one date would have been freed up had not Rangers themselves secured the postponement of a match against Gretna in December to assist them in their Champions League campaign.

GG goes on

Nor can the SPL reasonably be held culpable for the Ibrox side's failure to beat Hibs and Partick Thistle at the first attempt in the Scottish Cup, taking up two more days for replays.

The Ibrox chief executive's bafflement over the administrators' refusal to extend the season beyond the 18 May deadline should Rangers not qualify for the European final – "why can not the season simply be extended to 27 May regardless?" – was actually answered some hours before Bain posted his criticism on the club website.

It would mean, said Gold, the other five clubs waiting 17 days between their penultimate and final matches and "that goes against the integrity of the competition."

Can't wait to see the fallout if we do manage to keep the pressure on them tom.

Has Mr Spiers commented on the decision?

It was indeed on 30 October 1993 at Ibrox when Brian O'Neil scored in the 90th minute having come on as a sub two minutes earlier.

Other scorers that day were McCoist (67), John Collins (70).

Celtic - Bonner,Grant Mowbray, Gillespie, Boyd, Byrne, McStay, McGinlay, Collins, Creaney (Payton) Nicholas (O'Neil).

Rangers - Maxwell, Stevens, (Pressley), Gough, McPherson, Robertson, Steven, (Mikhailichenko)Ferguson, McCall, Durrant, McCoist, Hateley.

Hopefully there will be no need to repeat the feat tomorrow!

That Kenny Dalglish video from earlier?

I am sure that the third goal was scored at Muirton v St Johnstone on 14 April 1973.

The other Celts in the footage, Bobby Murdoch, Jimmy Johnstone and Harry Hood would seem to confirm that this was the game.

We won 3-1 and Billy McNeill and Jimmy Johnstone scored the other Celtic goals.

And when they scored a fourth 14 minutes from the end, the anguished Rangers supporters flooded down the West bank on to the track and out of the ground.

They could bear to watch no longer.

The first goal came when the game was less than two minutes old.

Lennox took a corner on the left, the ball went precisely to the unmarked McNeill who headed it with even more accuracy just inside the left hand post.

Ferguson, who had dropped back, presumably to pick him up, was nowhere near.

Nor was anyone else.

The second and third goals, which destroyed Rangers, were both the result of unforced errors by one team and icy professionalism by the other.

They also both came in the last minute before the interval, leaving Rangers 10 minutes to dwell on the catastrophe and the inevitability of the outcome.

First, Persson made a bad pass back towards Mathieson, Lennox snapped up the ball and ran some forty yards, with Mathieson in despairing pursuit. Just as he closed to tackling range, Lennox scored a handsome, unequivocal goal.

Seemingly, only seconds later, Martin took a short goal-kick to Greig.

It was an indifferent kick and Greig bumbled it. Connelly darted in and took the ball, ran on, drew Martin out of his goal and stabbed the ball into the net.

Celtic, in fact, had started as slightly the underdogs because of the loss of their wingers, despite Rangers recent poor form and the additional handicap of being without the suspended Stein, their principal striker.

It was suggested that Celtic might even play for a draw, planning to win a replay on Wednesday, when Hughes would be fit.

Whatever their intentions before the kick-off, two minutes after it and McNeill's goal, they began to play with only two men upfield, Chalmers and Lennox.

However these two were worth an entire forward line.

Having just two strikers surrendered much of the initiative to Rangers of course but although the first half was disputed mainly in Celtic territory, it was difficult to believe in Rangers' ability to break through.

The first half was bitterly fought, with tackling that could be practically felt at the back of the stands, and overt private feuds always threatening to burst into violence.

The second half was slightly less acid but tackling was as brave and fearsome as before."

I was still outside when we scored the first.

That half time was the most relaxed I'd ever been at a game against them.

Wasn't that the day Ferguson assaulted Bobby Murdoch?

For the younger CQNers you missed a magnificent player in Bobby. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger st.anthony COMMENT-DATE:26/04/08 20:47 COMMENT-BODY:Enjoyed the Dalglish video.

The first goal was from the night we beat Ayr 7-2 in Nov 1975. It was a midweek game and in those days you watched highlights without knowing the score. Can remember jumping around the living room with my Dad.

The St Johnstone game reminds me what a diifcult place Muirton Park was to visit in the early 70's when they had Henry Hall, John Connolly and Jim Pearson in their team.

Kenny's goal at Dens Park was a 6-0victory in 1974 when he scored an exquisite hat trick. If pushed I would say it was his finest game in the green and white.

It's a pity he blotted his copybook as manager or whatever title he had with Barnes and co. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Celtic_First COMMENT-DATE:26/04/08 20:50 COMMENT-BODY:Hi Thom

Well, your memory is better than mine as I had forgotten about Lotina being the manager of Celta then. He later took them into the CL.

He's had a very good second half of the season at Depor and the word on the street is that he's slowly winning the support over.

There's no doubt that his previous spell at Celta de Vigo will have been part of the reticence with which he was received, but it's not like Glasgow. The two cities are quite a bit apart.

Lotina isn't Galician, so it's not as though he were really a Celta man. He's Basque; his first club was Guernica, the place the Nazis bombed in with Franco's permission to try out their new toys (bomber aircraft) on this very day in 1937.

He's the youngest of eight children and only learned to speak Castilian when he went to school. Two of his sisters are Sacred Heart missionaries working in Kenya and Cameroon.

Villarreal are a point clear of Barcelona with tomorrow's game in hand against Betis in hand now.

They are, as you say, ahead in the head to head. They beat Barcelona 3-1 in Villarreal in October and took the return match too, 1-2 in Barcelona in March.

I don't know about the head to head between Lotina and Rijkaard. It would have come under most scrutiny when Lotina was manager of Espanyol, but I'd say take the word of the Sky commentators for it. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Zbyszek COMMENT-DATE:26/04/08 21:01 COMMENT-BODY:This post has been removed by the author. --------
