Fixture congestion offers little comfort

I was asked a couple of times today whether I wanted Rangers to remain in the Uefa Cup in order to give Celtic a better chance of closing the gap in the league, but the stunning effect of the home defeat to Motherwell on Saturday has made the argument seem academic. I wanted them out, however, the more than deserve their place in the semi final.

Celtic must win all their games and Rangers must drop four points on top of two defeats to Celtic. It would take an unprecedented collapse to turn things.

Can this season get any worse!!!!???

To all of you who laughed at Sean South and myself and others for suggesting that Smith might have built a decent team in the summer- look at the disaster unfolding before out eyes!!!

I know there is nothing we can do about their UEFA run, but the underestimating of them by everyone at Celtic Park- from PL, to WGS to even Paul67 (not so many snidey articles about Carlo Cuellar now, eh Paul?) has been, in my view, criminal, and has contributed to our lacadaisical, effortless, listless, spineless season.

I am furious at the moment. Furious that they are in a European semi with every chance of a final appearance and of winning it.

Furious that from a position of strength we have let them run over the hill and miles miles away from us.

Furious that a bit more humility and sensible thinkng from those in power could have had us ahead of them- or much closer to them- in the SPL.

Now, thanks to our spinelessness, they can concentrate of Europe.

Tonight is a disaster for us.

    Gutted.

Ferguson and Thomson out of Fiorentina game. Fiorentina 4th in a strong Serie A. Vieri and Mutu up front. Now that would be a shock and if they overcome all that then they will face Zenit or Gefate. Gefate loko favourites and have a talented young manager...

The Motherwell result really does stick in the throat now.

Sources say that season extension has been pre-agreed and will be anounced soon.

What makes it worse is that the way they approached this tie was exactly the way everyone knew they would, apart from it seems Sporting Lisbon. Don't concede at home, hit on the break away.

I despondently agree; the fixture congestion will not help us at all. We have better players; they have shown they have the more tactically astute manager. Am I allowed to do the teenage 'FACT!' ?

I am sure Smith makes football simple for his players, I suspect Gordon makes it too complex prepping them like they are playing chess Vs Bobby Fisher when its not chess, its bl**dy football. The man maybe thinks too much.

Lets get this clear - wining breads confidence and confidence gets results.

This has made Rangers even stronger favourites for the title. There is no disputing this - average players are performing above average due to one thing - confidence!

Now I will say this - it is dangerous to build so much on so little. f that confidence were to be dented - say by a Celtic win on Wed then cracks WOULD start to appear. Sadest thing of all is that our cracks appeared a while ago and are now mineshafts.

Unfortunately - there are some things brewing under the surface at Celtic that will not allow us to capitalise.

  • At 10/04/08 22:03, Blogger ItaliaBhoy said…

    GordonJ,

The club must stand firm and oppose an extension to the season. Who cares the opprobrium that will come our way?

Rangers winning the UEFA would be a calamity for us. An utter calamity. No-one employed by Celtic can make this any easier for them. No-one.

If Lawwell has agreed to an extension, then I will consider that a resigning matter.

Some people at Celtic should take note.

Italiabhoy, have I wronged you sometime in the past?

In the last transfer window when I published a correct Celtic transfer story you accuse me of acting like a tabloid, now I publish “snidey articles” about Cuellar.

    Find me one.

I don’t recall expressing a single view of the player here (which I reserve the right to do), although I remember mentioning his appearance record (accurately).

If I have wronged you, tell me when, if not, get over your fascination with things I write very little, if anything, about.

I also find your comment incongruous. Last May I was perhaps the first person to say Rangers had as good a chance of winning the league this season as we had.

I said they would spend big and strengthen and they did. If anyone underestimate them it was not me. I look forward to your retraction.

    sixo'clock,

I don't know, but I would assume that all Ranger's post-split opponents would have a say in whether it went ahead. In reality, most would probably accede to them for a quiet life (aka "the good of Scottish football").

If we were to make a stand I am sure it would be difficult for the SPL to ignore us. We would certainly have a good case for going to UEFA.

However we would be castigated by most of the country. It would be a "flag debate" for the 21st century. Celtic stood alone then, and history has shown that we were right. I would hope that Lawwell would have the cojones to stand firm, as did Bob Kelly all those years ago.

Symptomatic of the underestimating of Rangers which has characterised this blog and Celtic FC itself in the last twelve months.

I was actually at the Artemio Franchi in Florence only last Sunday to watch the Viola beat Reggina 2-0.

With Mutu and Pazzini, Fiorentina certainly have the firepower to win the tie and Bobo Vieri might not be the player he once was but with the ball at his feet he certainly caused the Reggina defence problems.

It was at the back that I thought they looked a bit weak with the defenders dithering on the ball. Someone like Davis constantly snapping at them could cause problems.

The other issue is that Fiorentina are involved in a major tussle for the 4th spot in Serie A with Sampdoria being one of their main challengers. And who do Fiorentina play the Sunday after Ibrox? Yep, Sampdoria.

Still think the Viola boys will put them out but I thought that about Werder Bremen as well.

The nails in Gordon Strachans coffin will either be hammered in or loosened off depending more on Sundays TEAM SELECTION than the result.

Will he prove himself to be stubborness made corporal or a man who sees what we have been seeing for months: Square Pegs Round Holes ; Underperformers who need a rest.

If GS backs his underperformers and the board then back GS then in my opinion the board will show they prioritise pound notes before supporters and results.

In case anyone is in any doubt I Am Not In the Least Happy.
Gordon Strachan prove me wrong prove me wrong when I said you should have been sacked after St Mirren @ home because at the moment I am leading myself to beleive Willie McStay could have saved our season.

For all the Mowbray, Collins, Yogu Hughes, Keane suggestions - wake up- we need an experienced man like Hiddink anf they are thin on the ground.

Our CEO is already on record, quite correctly, as opposing any extension.

Whether any other clubs would raise an objection I don't know. I think it's St Mirren and Motherwell they still have to have agmes arranged against. The former have nothing to play for but the latter are very much in the race for 3rd. And that could also mean Dundee Utd and Hibs objecting to an extension.

Agree with much of what you said earlier, but still can't understand the pre-occupation you and many others have with Rangers.

I'm a Celtic supporter and couldn't care less about them other than within the context of SPL, SFA Cup or League Cup.

Whatever else they get up to? So what?

What does it have to do with us?

I know I'm lucky and have spent 20 years in England and a further 25 in Sweden so I've not been exposed to the constant hatred and persecution since I was 21, but, believe me, absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder - it gives you a better perspective.

Rangers are worth no more to Celtic than Gretna or ICT - why do we still treat them as something special? They ain't, I assure you.

Many on here, including myself, would like to lose the "Old Firm" tag.

As usual, since they need us more than we need them, we are the ones who have to take the initiative. Let them hate us - you'll never see a better confirmation of an inferiority complex.

If you don't agree, please explain to me why they are so important in the greater scheme of things or even in our Celtic world.

They may win the SPL, but will do it with larger debts, smaller resources both players and financially and a future which I wouldn't look forward to.

First and foremost, Celtic must survive. That's it. The rest will take care of itself.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose - so long as Celtic are in the mix, I don't really care.

Chill man, this team may not be champions this season, although I still have hopes, but Celtic shall remain as the champion club in Scotland - and that is what matters to me.

    Cheers

    Alex

My commitments a little bit deeper than to abandon ship after one unsuccesful season or because, in my amateur observer opinion, the Manager's not good enough - despite much evidence to the contrary.

I don't share the arrogance of some who post on here who's conviction that they know better than Strachan, Lawell, Reid and on and on and on, is unshakable.

This next comment is not intended to antagonise you but there's a chance that it might. The tone of much of what you post gives me the impression that you take some satisfaction in the teams failure because it's then evidence that 'supports' your opinion. It's probably an incorrect impression but that's what your words lead me to believe. For example, your comment that I've copied at the very start of this post reads as if you'll be gloating if fans abandon the club. I won't and I hope I am wrong about you.

I know our manager likes his stats.

If, as I expect, we beat Rangers in both games at parkhead, then both teams will have cancelled each other out in terms of league points for this season.

If Celtic win 6 of their remaining games, they will have accumulated more points than won the league last year

Thats an unuasually optomistic post for you, or do I do you a disservice?

Will Gordon pick a team and a game plan that will beat Walter twice? Or, will Walter prove that he has Gordon in his back pocket.

Hate to say it but I am not optomistic when it comes to Gordon and hard graft SPL, I would have more faith if he was playing Arsenal !

    Top Post.

And your mention of Sweden gives me the opportunity to present the sign given to us that they will not win the Uefa Cup.

A proper European and Uefa superstar scored a goal tonight, one Henrik Larsson.

Even Edward does not consider Rankers a good enough team to have reached these heady heights but he'll take it if it's going.

I always want to see them cuffed but I would let them have the UEFA cup gladly if it meant we got the league. Long odds, I know, but you can still wish, hope and pray for it (no obligation there in case you think you're being bullied into being positive)

There's little point in getting worked up, depressed, or engaged at all with Rangers progress in Europe. There's nothing we can do about it, and to dwell on it eats away at the soul - forget about it.
They will be found out in time, and even if they surpass our efforts from 2003, so what? Our worst is their best. On and off the field past, present and future.

Let's concentrate on doing them - twice, and convincingly - and when I say "convincingly", I mean by a couple or 3 goals, on each occasion. Any of us who witnessed the first half at Ibrox must believe it's possible - I certainly do.

Time for the Manager to show he's capable of adapting.
3-5-2 and they are undone, for sure.

    Borucs
    Hinkel McManus Wilson
    Sno
    Robson Nakamura Hartley McGeady
    Samaras McDonald

Let's do them, big style, and start to apply pressure the likes of which they haven't seen this season. Lets show the way. We have the players, and we're overdue the slice of luck that delivers the confidence for us to be what we can be - it may ultimately prove to be too late, but let's start sowing doubt in their psyche now. If not us, then who? if not now, then when?

As to the future of our Manager, I see no viable alternative on the horizon, not one that will fit the spend profile, and improve us. It can definitely be argued that GS has earned the right to a 4th season, the only dilemma I have is how much can he be trusted to spend.

But all things considered, and even although I have never taken to him as I did MON (and if thats the "not celtic minded" thing, then it must be buried so far in my subconscious that I'm even now not aware I subscribe to it!), next season I think GS should still be the man. And if he is, he should have the boards full backing (including financially), and his own burning desire to set the record straight.

Come on, Celtic (and I mean the whole Celtic family). Believe.

    Hail Hail, bhono

    Paul,

You know fine well you are being disingenuous about Cuellar, and I am surprised by your Clintonesque attitude on this.

You posted an article about him commenting adversely on his appearance record. The message was clear- draw you own conclusions, bloggers, Rangers sign another crock. Don't worry about this signing, people.

The article perfectly fitted the tone of this blog which is relentlessly upbeat about our club's management and direction, whilst downplaying Rangers' hierarchy. It's your blog, you can write what you like. I find your point of view interesting but not convincing.

Many of us spotted quite early on this season that Celtic seemed to be caught cold this year, and that talk of a "Generation of Domination" etc seemed at hopelessly at odds with the poor football and increasingly poor results of our team on the park.

This is different from framing the league title in terms of statistics from the past, as you did in that slightly esoteric article to which you provided the link.

Our problem is not that three in a row has been done irrugularly in the past. Our problem is not probability or the mysteries of the cosmos. Our problem is that we messed up. Big time. From a position of strength to boot. We underestimated our only opponent- a criminal mistake in my humble opinion.

Your Cuellar article stands testimony to a prevailing attitude of complacency and lack of vision at the upper echelons at Celtic. It's not your fault that we will probably not win the league this year. But like it or not, you have been a cheerleader for the strategy which has led us to this Silent Spring. You gotta expect some flak.

Oh, and in your linked article you talk of the league being "close". If the next two OF games go to form, their lead over us will be well into double figures...

What were the chances of that, eh?

    aafg,

I know, you are right. Obsessing about them is unhealthy. However, like it or not, they are our one "opponent". What they do does have a relevence to us, sadly.

Swanseabhoy, I will certainly be there next season- should have made that clear.

The old "you are enjoying this line" is used frequently on CQN against posters who are not blinded by the spin on Lawwell and Strachan which is common on here. I have posted many times in the past that I will be delighted if I am wrong, and I will be celebrating with the rest if by some miracle we win the league.

I assure you I am hurting at our pitiful season. Unlike others, I have no grand "it'll-all-be-alright-theory" to fall back on...

I don't recall any pom poms other than a frank assessment of a fan who is calling it as he sees it. There have been many articles outlining where our teams need to strengthen posted by Paul as well as the warning that this year will be a lot closer than previous. All of which has been proven. Out total collapse on the field of play and the lack of tactical ability to change things when necessary have disrupted what could have been a very big stake in the ambitions of Rangers hearts.

I would also disagree we underestimated Rangers, we are guilty of the usual sin at Celtic. Sheer utter incompetence at grabbing an opportunity to bury your biggest rivals and falling back on penny pinching until the December window by which time the damage was done.

Bearing in mind that we hate to see you win anything, you'll understand that I hope you don't make it to Manchester. ;-)

Unless WGS makes the radical team changes on Sunday that most fans wanted last Saturday, then the league will definately be over and there will be no need for any extensions.
Although, the laptop loyal will go into overdrive during the next few days to help the cause. That is as predictable as Wattie's tactics tonight.

sorry, but I wrote it on here a week or so ago; forget who has the better players, or the stronger squad.

THEY are WINNING right now. As was mentioned earlier, winning breeds confidence, and real belief that NOBODY will beat us. Sporting were poor tonight, but Rangers were strong in every dept - on and off the field.

In this 'mood', I honestly can't see us beating them on Wed. I can, sadly, see them turning us over.

And one thing I have to comment on, which might irk one or two; I read Paul's comments after the Motherwell game, about the great reaction of the fans etc.

I only got to see the game on Setanta on Wednesday, and I have to say, it sounded very like the Parkhead I remember. At around 55 mins, the noises coming from the crowd were far more negative than positive. I didn't hear anything by way of real encouragement.

The playeres looked nervous. No wonder.

I wish I was as confident as you are that we will beat the huns.

Tonight should be another big wake up call !

Sporting probably have better technical players than we do and they found it impossible to pass thier way through anti-football

If WGS goes 4-4-2 and fails for the 5th time next Wednesday he must go and go there and then.

We need to get our act together now so that a new man can start to put together his team, on and off the park !

If we make a bold and ambitious choice recnt history has proved that things can be turned around quickly.

My big fear is either WGS stubbornly staying on or if he goes being replaced with a cheap option like Mark McGhee

Time for DD and the board to stand up for the club !

Strachan has never even attempted a 3 - 5 - 2, i think thats the most disappointing aspect. I think on occasion, particularly recently its shouldv'e been at least worth a go. Throw that into the mix along with never leaving on 3 strikers when we needed points. I never like to give up but I dont see us winning all remaining games.

Cuellar this and Cuellar that. My goodness, if I had 9 other outfield players playing alongside me in the penalty box, I'd be a competent centre half also. The fact is that teams are finding it incredibly difficult to get past a defence/team that includes the kitchen sink !

If we want solace of some sort, then this is the perfect comparison - Greece won the Euro Championships in 2004 but did not win any credit for the football played. I think Walter has a fondness for Lamb Kleftiki.

two things - yes, they are winning, and yes they achieving it via negative football. Call it the way it is and don't be so downbeat because they have won playing in such a style. Lord only knows, I would be downbeat if they played Sporting off the park and won 2-0. I'm afraid its page 293 of the manual for the chapter "Dealing with teams that defend 11 men deep." For those who are unfamiliar with this particular script, it does of course advise to outfox the opposition by changing YOUR style of play. That's the key to Wednesday, not them.

    Paul,

Any comment on why the share price has improved. Given recent results I'd have thought there would've been some sort of hit.

Or is it still seen as good value in the long run. I still subscribe to the long term financial advantage we have. Although if they can sell Cousin and Darcheville in the summer for a few million more than they paid then this may be temporarily halted.

On the debate as to our (Celtic) future, I've deliberately not posted before as I've been a bit emotional given our recent performances...

I'd like to address some of the bitching that seems prevalent in cyber space and beyond.

Anti-football comments are the perennial chant of the loser who believes they have a divine right to win and that they deserve it more than the other guy.

Don't get me wrong I like to win and do it playing good football but in that order.

I believe in getting the results and I seem to remember MON and Gordon Strachan both being prepared to play ugly to win.

On our managers future I think he has earned the right to continue taking us forward. Furthermore I believe he should also have our respect, long term and not just short term when it suits us.

I tend to read between the lines when Gordon Strachan provides comment, my take is that he is attempting to protect his players and build their confidence for the coming games and next season.

The only real baffling piece for me is the Riordan/Balde situation. If its a pride issue, and I dont think it is then that is poor man management. But I'm not prepared to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Strachan's time is up - you were warned but failed to see what was before you - none so blind etc etc

Good news is the talent is at the club if we rid ourselves of a coach who overcoaches

    Boruc

    Balde, Mcmanus, Odea,

    Hinkel Robson

    Hartley,

    McGeady
    Naka

    Samaras
    JVoH

would win all remaining games by a shedload

Deek in for any one of Naka, Aidan, or Samaras when required. Skippy in for JVoH.

Players playing n positions they know best ie aidan on the right with licence to roam Naka on the left with the same brief and two wing backs who can tackle get forward deliver a cross and score goals.

Hartley to hold and protect his backline and to spray simple passes to his creative midfelders who aren't left hugging the wings which let's face it is a waste of their undoubted talents,

I can't see how Gordon's squad can play any other way.

Oh and did I say welcome back Bobo - purely to frighten any opposing SPL forward who might be thinking of entering our defensive area.

And of course we won't be doing zonal marking and there'll be no pages of notes - away you go and play, express yourselves where you know best.

There really was no need for the mineshaft to open

GL2 - I'd play Sno before Donati in the middle with PH. We need players with heart and Donati doesn't have any. If he did, coupled with his undoubted talent, he would be playing for one of the big teams in Serie A.

Robson on left and Aiden on the right, with Skippy and Sami up front. Bobo and GC at the back, with Wilson in for Naylor.
This is in direct contrast to our manager, who guarantees mediocre players a first team place after they let us down.

As I have believed for a while, we have the players. Now either:
    a.They have gone off form

c.They dont know what they are meant to do.
d.They do know what they should do but the coach gameplan limits them.
e.The right combination is not being chosen
f.Universal randomness means that all football results and play only seems like it is influenced by plans/formulas/ tactical and playing combinations when in fact its completely random therefore explaining having best players, tactics, team selection, board, coach but not cutting it agaisnt lesser opposition.

    TTTT explain heart to me?

The best scorer we have in midfield or the guy who is sitting in the stand due to his mouth?

As I have said to you before. Massimo is getting the same treatment from the scottish press as Gordon does and too many people dont look to see what he does.

If we are looking for players with no talent to run around then you can join me and Malceye but then again you cant run.

I honestly sit and watch Massimo and can understand why he is criticised. I said it on here months ago he would win us the league as he is the only one with something different.

We need him back and we needed him 2 weeks ago at the bigot dome.

Bobo certainly looked interested when played at xmas vs dundee united. In fact did he not save the game by saving our captain from a passback which would almost certainly have resulted in a goal had robson not been intercepted by Balde?

    nbcotc,

My point is that I believe his results over the last 3 years deserve another season.

As you say CL results have improved, including a not inconsequential beating of the current European Champions.

In terms of success I tend to be quite literal in so far as I judge it by trophies won. 4 out of 6, admittedly soon to be 4 out of 9, although I'd love to do them and Aberdeen to win the cup.

I empathise with your frustration we all do at some level.

On a lighter note to the mineshafters:
Can Gordon Strachan pick a midfield, of course he can he's been doing it ever since he arrived?

GL2 - I'm not questioning the fact that he's got talent, but he disappears in games when it matters. Look at Saturday and also the first game at Mordor. He shirks tackles and going for headers as well.
It's quite obvious to me now why Donati was loaned out to three different Italian clubs by Milan. The question was asked when he came, but we were too busy salivating at the prospect of him and Skoosh after previous pedestrian midfields.

Brown is naive and has been a huge disappointment this season, but out of the two, I hope that he is here next year.

should Gordon play him in the same position Martin did or do great people sometime attempt great or radical things?

    GL2,

I agree on the Balde scenario. I seem to recall a comment being relayed around the time of the Sunderland interest, not sure if has any truth but it went along the lines of:
You're the CEO of Celtic and are quite right to look after your interests but I'm the CEO of Bobo Balde and I'll look after my own interests. An impasse couldnt be found because of financial reasons. I posted at the time that I felt this was a man management excercise to get him motivated, but an injury then occurred.

    Corrib04,

I'll happily be on the playing good football and winning combination, almost any day of the week.

Helenio Herrera still managed to win the European Cup. Let me ask you this would Jock Stein have sacrificed his style of football to have guaranteed winning 2 European Cups, I think so.

My point earlier was that winning was what mattered first and foremost to me. Others can have their own opinion of which they are entitled.

Why almost any day of the week?

A wise man once said to me that he'd rather beat Rangers with an offside goal knocked over the line with a hand and them to have been denied clear penalty after clear penalty. I don't know maybe bitterness makes the heart grow cynical.

Never mind using Brown as a contrast, there are big question marks over both our summer "blue chip" signings.
Do you want to go into next season with them as our established central midfield? As a combination, they haven't cut the mustard. Paul Hartley must wonder what he's got to do to get a game and Evander has shown more football intelligence in any recent games he's played than our two super signings. Hugely disappointing, but I would give Brown another season based on the previous example of Stan.

Just an opinion....and only a bloody fool wouldn't be negative after Saturday!!

Watched Rangers tonight and have noticed a lot of people saying they deserved to go through, can't agree. Yes they scored the goals and Sporting didn't but who was the better team? Call them efficient, I call them lucky, sure there's a bit of 'efficiency' there but I can see them getting a right hammering in the semis, especially with Ferguson and Thomson out.

Lessons Strachan should learn from watching them defend relentlessly against better teams:

Do not attempt ball after ball crossed into the box.

Do not think you can rug through their fairly slow defence, particularly if they are sitting back.

Their fullbacks offer nothing going forward.

    They defend deep.

As free kicks are almost certainly out the window for us, what's the chances of refs giving us many around a Rangers' box?, then I'd suggest getting to the byline and cutting the ball back along the ground!

Shooting from outside the box is another potential area to take advantage as long as you have strikers in the box ready to pounce on any spilled ball.

We should have the aerial threat to worry them in JVOH but let's be honest, we don't! Samaras can score headers from a nice whipped in ball but probably wont win headers lumped up from deep.

I don't know if I'm semi-pleased or gutted that they're through to the next round, I always hate when they win but then it leaves a glimmer of hope for the league!

If we win all our games from now till the end of the season then we've got a decent change, if they take points off us then I'd admit it's over; they've started to drop points as of last week, another two games just might be the straw that breaks the orcs' back!

We have to keep the faith!

I don't post here so sorry if i'm entetring the fray....but ten maybe 11 years ago I was told that picking favourites would be Tommy Burns undoing at Celtic. Picking Grant and McStay over Collins and Mc GInley... and the managers perceived favouritism had unsetttled the football club and would put pay to title aspirations.

Also can I add face facts Rngers are top of the league ands in the semis of the UEFA because they have outplayed us. Pure and Simple .

And just to sadd fuel to the fire I remember Paul 67 suggesting that Adam Virgo would be a better signing than Naka.

We all make mistakes and assumptions....and assumptions are what might have lost us the league.

    Missed something major out...

The running through the defence is simply because they put too many players in the way, even the most skilful of players would have to be incredibly lucky to gain any success.

McGeady must be played on the right, we have to stretch them as much as possible, cutting in is simply playing into their hands!

Last week, I thought Celtic had a better chance of winning the SPL than Rangers had of winning the UEFA Cup so I was quite happy for them to go through. And I had a very strong feeling they would - same pattern as before against a pretty poor team.

However, I very much doubt that Rangers will even be in Manchester. In fact, I reckon that Rangers have just slightly a better chance of European glory than Celtic have of 3-in-a-row.

The fact is that the teams they could face now are actually pretty good. Let's give credit where it's due however - getting to the UEFA semi isn't bad at all!

But my expectation that the next two rounds would be too much was based on the presumption that Barry Ferguson would be playing. System or no system, luck or no luck, there hasn't been a Scottish team so dependant on one player since Henrik's leg break cost John Barnes his job.

I expect Fiorentina to win at Ibrox. The rest would be academic.

Bournsouprecipe & Half and half :- I wouldn't expect anything else thats what football rivalry is about. I don't think we were jammy in any way tonight, apart from one header that hit the post our defence coped. Our midfield matched theirs, and our attackers beat theirs in that we scored twice. There was also one point in the second half when we puttogether a fantastic (in my eyes) set of passes. This was done away from home and in my eyes we deserve our place in the semi,
If we go out next round I'll be proud of my teams eforts this season.
Before anyone attacks me for the last sentence ask yourself how you felt when you reached the semi in your own EUFA run.

    pastyface - enlighten me.

Which Polish, German, Dutch and Greek players do Rangers have? I cannot think of any. Or are you perhaps referring to Boruc, Hinkel, JVOH and Samaras? They play for Celtic, and if there is to be an extension to the season, it will only be for Rangers, not Celtic.

Why would Celtic need an extended season? Celtic's fixtures are already sceduled.

There seems to be some sort of strange misconception pervading Celtic cyberspace that an extension to the season would involve Celtic. It wouldn't.

Personally I think both Brown and Donati have quality and will be better next season.

However, if there is one player who has hid this season it has been Brown. He goes missing from games on a regular basis, watch when the defence have the ball, who's available for the pass? Donati and McDonald that's who. Some games I watch I loose track of where Brown is on the park for long spells, he hides!

It's probably got a lot to do with the mental side of his: when he first arrived he was excellent, but now the adrenaline has worn off and the realisation he's at Celtic and must control every game has kicked in he's offering less than Gravesen would!

I expect a huge improvement with him out the team at the weekend.

In no way am I saying he's a poor player, just look at his performances for Scotland, a different kind of pressure and he starts to shine once more.

Donati on the other hand has fluctuated a lot more, I'd say he's offered more overall, he certainly makes himself available more often. He needs to work on his concentration and acclimatise to the Scottish way (which is horrible by the way and as long as referees continue to allow it we'll never have a decent product) but I fully expect him to make huge leaps next season if he stays.

Also, while I'm in the mood (or rather while I've got a Sports Marketing report to avoid), I have to take issue with the common "lack of fight" slight that is made against the Celtic players.

Take the last Celtic-Rangers game for instance, we didn't lose due to a lack of fight, we had control of the game and most of the play, it doesn't help that our defence is kak and our strikers aren't scoring but it wasn't due to lack of fight.

What I would say, and what is different from the MON teams and this one is not fight but a winning mentality.

Players like Donati and Brown have came from clubs where they're used to being stars amongst their own support (Donati from his loan clubs obviously and not Milan) but were never really expected to win anything.

Who in the Celtic team of present is used to winning?

To an extent McGeady, JVOH and maybe McManus?

A large number (McDonald, Samaras, Donati, Brown, Naylor, Nakamura, Riordan, Caldwell, Hartley, Robson, Hinkel, Sno and Wilson) have all been good players at their previous clubs but there's never been that pressure to win week-in week-out. Strachan needs to instil that winning mentality into them or bring someone else in to do so. Football clubs are so backwards in their reluctance to adopt new methods but I'd have thought Strachan of all people would be willing to bring in sports psychologists to improve performance...

Maybe he has, but it doesn't seem like it's working.

Celtic should expect to win every game, our players should be shocked if we don't win, that's not what's happening!

    1 Rangers 30 24 3 3 73 24 49 75

My opinion on why we're not winning the league...

We rely too much on McGeady to do everything, the lad deserves a medal for his efforts this season!

We play too many long balls from the back.

Brown has hidden far too often.

We do not play to our strikers strengths.

Our defence, although not conceding many goals, has had too many lapses in concentration in important fixtures.

NB. Bobo would not help the last point. Saying that I'd still welcome him back for games against the huns - just so he can kick them!

It seems so obvious even just watching one half of one of their European games. They're good in the air but not comfortable with the ball bouncing around their feet... but running through them isn't going to work as they can put more men behind the ball than Kilmarnock when defending!

I've no idea why we don't swap McGeady and Naka about mid-game more often but it's what the team's been crying out for (or Naka off for Robson).

I also think switching the play from one side to the other quickly would work against them as they seem to play a schoolboy type football where all their players are concentrated in one area of the park. For that reason I'd play Donati against them as he's quite good at long cross-field passes - although there's always the risk of a dangerous interception taking advantage of our slow centre-backs!

Seems Wattie is himself surprised by his own teams'performance.I think thats as far as they'll go with a classy Fiorentina, heavyweight Bayern Munich and this year's Shaktar,Zenit St.Petes left in competition. But who knows with his 4-3-2-1 Wattenechio formation. It may be anti-football,but Mr.Smith seems to optimise the performance of the tools he's been supplied with.Watching an ageing Christain Dailly tonight ,he looked like a better central defender(in the air and on the ground)than Mick and Gary.
As has been observed repeatedly on here, wee Gordon doesn't want to vary his tactics much.Personally,I have given up on Donati in particular.Bloke 109,you have stolen my thunder on my first post as I agree with this redundant wing-play to cross-balls.Lee Wilkie and Gary Kenneth are both about eight tall and even after 90 mins we were still lobbing in high balls.Ditto Zander Diamond/Considine;Weir/Cueller and the Motherwell lads.Gordon, what about some shots from outside the box a la Murdo McLeod?
Agree with some on here that the next few cames will be won or lost when the team sheets are announced. Are the players being over trained or over coached?Scott Brown offers midfield dig and stamina like no other in Scotland.Whats happened to his first touch and composure in front of goal?Certainly not the Hibs player of old.I'd still play him,Hartley and Robson together and shoot from the halfway line!

At least the huns won't get a holiday out it if they get to the Final. I enjoyed my 3 days in Madrid either side of the match, they'll enjoy their 3 hour bus ride either side of theirs, if they make it of course.

I don't know for sure but I would imagine it's the same Police force that covers Bolton and Manchester. I wonder how that same Police force who prevented Rangers playing Bolton in a pre-season friendly feel about having 80,001 (the figure that will be quoted by the Scottish Press so it's more than reported for Seville) of them down for a match in Manchester?

referring to earlier points - we are not losng this league due to a poor defense (although we clearly need to improve).

We are not scoring goals throughout the team - we need a midfield to chip in with goals. The only guy i can see getting into double figures from midfield would be Robson...or Hartley if played in a forward position.

I am losing patienc ewith our manager and his inability to put a team formation on the park capable of threatning from diff positions , includng an areal threat.

We have a squad of reasonable players but we are weak and the manager has made us weak. Celtic has been crying out for tougher players.

I think its unfortunate that Bobo and Wilson have been injured as they certainly would add dig to this team.

At this stage i'm not sure the manager sees it - if not he wont last long! I hope he wakes up

At the risk of sounding naive,i just don't understand all this talk of people giving up watching Celtic, due to a dislike of the manager,or indeed, displeasure at our playing style, off the top of my head,i can't think of ONE scenario which would engender the same response from me.Over my considerable amount of years following Celtic,i,like everyone else, have experienced many highs and some incredibly hurtful lows,in all that time,it has NEVER entered my head that i should stop following this club, truthfully,i just can't imagine what would have to happen to make me feel that way.No matter how badly we performed, irrespective of our failings on the field,NOTHING,could stop me from loving my club, faithful through and through, that's supposed to be our mantra, let's try to remember it

I always argue that successful Celtic teams have a goalscoring midfielder that will contribute 12-18 goals per season, supplimenting our usually prolific forwards and our 6-8 goal per season centre half...

Unfortunately I can only see one solution to our current malaise and fear that it may be too late to rectify the situation this season.

I merely wish to clarify, without picking at old sores, the details of the clique that you mention. How do YOU define the membership? Is there a minimum number of traits required? Is it only by attending BB's of a matchday (pre and/or post match)? Do you have to have attended one or all of the events organised?

I want them out at the first available opportunity in all competitions.

As said by others before, it makes our collapse all the worse.

Heres a question I have been asking gloaters the past month:

Name a European great that they have ever beaten in Europe? In their history.

Im talking about teams that have won the EC/CL, long history of domestic success, huge support, legendary players etc etc.

    Im still awaiting an answer.

Celtic is an answer that qualifies, however it is not valid due to cheating.

The thought of the huns winning the UEFA cup is frightening. Not only would their triumph be lauded from the rooftops it would constantly compared with our defeat in Seville (you can just hear fat DJ explaing how winning the Uefa cup was more significant than the Lisbon lions).

Can someone give me the devil's email address to make an unholy bargain.

I know I'll get slaughtered for this but I'm prepared to suffer the short term pain of 2 defeats to the huns at home in return for them going out to Fiorentina.

    There I've said it.

The league is over anyway and Gordon Strachan needs to go.

Losing twice in the league is definitely less painful than them winning the UEFA Vase.

Ps. I had a horrible dream last night, a nightmare.

We beat them twice at Celtic park but they still win the quadruple and Gordon Strachan stays.

I remember that because that same night I was at Celtic park suffering the pain of a pemalty shoot out loss to Milan in the semi final of the European Cup.

If I remember correctly both Celtic and Rangers were in semi finals at home on the same night.

    narrowboat,

I think the explanation as posted by bournesuprecipe on the Sopranos ending is a sound one. It's difficult to read it as anything other than a hit on Tony. And in another nod to the Godfather, the guy who kills him does it after coming out of the bathroom, just like Michael Corleone.

However, there is another, less final ending. Essentially, The Sopranos was a show were loose ends were seldom tied up. Often the convention of bringing storylines to a close was completely ignored (whatever happened to the Russian guy in the Pine Barrens episode for example)? Even when storylines are ended, they end softly rather than dramatically. Junior is left to simply veg away, Pauly sunbathes outside Satriales, we learn that Tony is facing a possible RICO trial etc.

That's life. It's often anti-climatic and devoid of neat endings. To my mind that has been the genius of this show- to ignore every accepted TV or Hollywood convention about storytelling and conclusions.

So you could read the final scene as being entirely typical of the show. Ie, nothing conclusive happens. Tony and family get on with their relatively boring domestic life, full of little dramas like bad parking, which milkshake to choose etc etc. For Tony, there is the added fear that strangers will always pose a threat- he will never be able to sit easy in a diner without wondering who the bloke in the baseball cap is.

But basically, he is getting on with life.

Looks like there's not any point now in my watching the final Sopranos episode as I had planned o -)

Sean South, I have read your views on the team all season and have never felt there was a lot to argue with so I have never felt the need to communicate directly with you before. I can see why you think you’ve been given a hard time on a couple of occasions. However, banging on about this BB clique/elitist nonsense is getting in the way of your otherwise well delivered argument and therefore does you a disservice.

So you know, I have met with others in that pub. I do not have the phone number or email address of any of those people except for one whom I have known for 45 years (mostly middle aged men is right) so I do not communicate other than through this blog or face to face in the pub. (Insufficient means, therefore, to plot and plan the clique’s next move). Rather than happy clapping or joyful singing with tambourines, and beatific smiles, the football discussion when I have been there centred on how awful we are at the moment and how awful we were for a good part of last season. People have had their head stuck in a pint more than stuck in the sand. As DBBIA said, the discussion takes in a lot of other things but as yet, I have not yet heard anybody planning on how to sort out that so and so Sean South.

It's a pub, Sean, as in open to the public. It's not a lodge and there is no password or need to rearrange your clothing to get in. It’s where Celtic supporters meet before and after games. That’s all it is. You would be very welcome there…. but carry a loaded Glock just in case!

All the very best to you and hail hail.
    John

I don't know why Celtic fans keep proclaiming their annoyance at (probably) losing the league to "a poor Rangers team". I watched the game last night, and I also saw their game in Bremen, and most of the recent Rangers v Celtic game, and whilst they do appear to ride their luck perhaps rather more than Celtic, they also play some very composed football, particularly in defence.

How many times last night did we see them calmly passing the ball out of tight defensive situations, thereby retaining possession and easing the pressure, rather than just hoofing the ball away from the goal straight back to the opposition? How many times did they comfortably deal with crosses into the penalty area? And how many amazing saves did McGregor have to make to keep them in the game?

Now consider Celtic's European away games this season, and ask yourself the same questions about Celtic.

Then there were the goals that Rangers scored last night. Both of them were excellently crafted and executed, and had Rooney & Ronaldo scored those goals for Man Utd we'd have been talking about "two great goals" to finish the tie. What wouldn't we give to see JVoH and Skippy performing so clinically!?

So, let's look on the bright side. Rangers have yet another two games to fit in, against a very strong Fiorentina side, who must surely be too good to become the next victims of the Govan mob. And if luck does really even out over the season, the extra effort in their European campaign will see Rangers drawing a couple of league games, and losing twice at CP, while a much fresher Celtic win every remaining game.

But if this doesn't come to pass, then we will have the consolation of having finished second to what I would suggest is actually a very good Rangers team. Scant consolation I know, and I'm sure you'll all disagree, but we have no divine right to win everything all the time... and there is always next season!
