Fixture list confirms anything still possible for champions

A cursory glance at the fixture list, below, could, perhaps would, tempt you to think that the impossible remains only the improbable.

If Rangers overcome Sporting Lisbon, their only home game before the 7 May will be a Uefa Cup semi final, with six away games and a Scottish Cup semi at Hampden to play, if they beat Partick Thistle. They could easily implode and if pressure were applied to them, I am sure they will.

Which makes me all the more furious that we lost at home to ten-man Motherwell on Saturday; that after an entire season of preparation we could not craft a goal against a team who won only one of their previous six games.

To be honest with you, that defeat really took the heart out of me. I found it hard to understand why the performance was so far from what was required, so I cannot invoke the Dunkirk spirit.

Six of the seven games we have are against teams who have already beaten Celtic this season and the other game is away to Dundee United, who took a point from Celtic Park last month. Each game is winnable, as is the league, still.

But only if the champions remember who they are.

what a disappointing weekend - if we cant beat 10 man (40 mins) motherwell at home (along with a horrid last 3 months) then we dont deserve the league.

    simple as that.

He's a stubborn wee man and hates losing an argument - so losing the league will hurt. That hurt may irk him and inspire him to stay - so dont be surprised if he stays.

I have a close friend who is well in at Everton. David Moyes will have to be prised from their grip - they know his value.

But we have a secret weapon.

Definately "in spite of what I have seen".

Don't get me wrong, at full time at the weekend I had NO doubt that we had blown our last chance. But I'll be damned if I'm going to give up to them.

Win next 4 games and we will be 5 points clear. That is how you apply pressure to an aging, tired Rangers side.

Unfortunately it was lost for me weeks ago when a change in personell was required for the run in.

I am so torn by the disaster of the last month or so that any up coming games only fill me with dread.

Please, please can Donati be dropped and can Naka be rested and used in the last 30 minutes of games.

And most importantly can Naylor be dropped, he has contributed nothing over the last few months.

To follow on from my team selection comments - I will clarify.

Nakamura should be dropped completely - he is not in the right frame of mind nor does he have the fight required.

Hesselink - been strangling our play all season and does not offer enough.

Naylor - will lose possesion as much as he keeps it - costs us a lot of the 90 mnutes with poor play.

Team to restore pride in the last 7:

    Boruc
    Wilson Caldwell Mick Odea
    Hinkel Hartley Robosn McGeady
Samaras McDoanld (Killen, Riordan and Hutcheson could all be used as well as Sheridan)

Brown could play right mid when avaible with Wilson left back and Hinkel right back.

Ask not what Celtic can do for you, ask what YOU can do for Celtic!

You know it makes sense lads. Don’t give in until it’s impossible to win.

Gordon Strachan is too damn stubborn.

He needs to DROP (not rested) Naylor, McManus, Donati, JVoH & Brown in that order and play Wilson, Bobo, Robson, Samaras & Hartley.

If he plays Brown & Donati again together then god wont even be able to help him.

swallow your pride Gordon - JVoH wont fight for you, Donati wont fight for you, Naylor doesnt know what the white lines at the side of the park are for and Broony has lost his way (or been told to curb his runs).

PS - Riordan - I would kick his ass from here to middle of next week. it should stay in the dressing room - you crossed the line Derek - good luck elsewhere.

Very confused as to how the team couldn't motivate themselves against Motherwell. Despite claiming that they still believed they could do it, it seems that they don't have the conviction within themselves.

GS is getting it from most sides of the support. Surely while there is a chance, we should be rallying behind him and the team and giving them our full backing? At least until its far beyond the realms of possibility.

The Huns will take strenght and confidence from our public shows of disloyalty to Strachan. We can look at the situation after the league is won or lost.

For D Moyes I had a look at his record according to everton fans.

For me he has the same weaknesses as WGS. Also I think his football is , to use the correct adjective , turgid.

However , you are correct that we should not replace WGS unless we have a better manager.

you are correct in as much as I do believe it is all over, however you are way off the mark with my name as that can be applied equally to either winning or losing.

we are all entitled to our opinions of course so no problem with you having one contrary to mine, actually that is what keeps this site going, contrary opinions,

however what does surprise me is the implication that if you still believe we can do it then you are a better Celtic supporter than those that don't

    quite bizarre

Clutching at straws now. I do not believe Celtic will win all their remaining games. Saturday was our last chance and we blew it.

I hope i'm wrong though, but it's hard to see how we can just change like that. Unless GS has a radical approach towards the players he decides to play.

    Mort.

    From the last thread.

I have no idea if David Moyes would come to Celtic,if the opportunity arose.

Last month he stated that he would be interested in joining either of the old firm club's.
This may have been a ploy to increase the offer he is currently trying to obtain for a new contract from Everton.

His Darnelist background matters not a jot to me.

You are correct about one thing. If he had wasted the millions Strachan has.
Went out of both domestic cups at home to substantially inferior sides ,and had us seven points behind the Darnel with them still having a game in hand, then i would probably be calling for his head.

He would deserve it too,and i would have been wrong in welcoming his appointment.

I am not going to go over what Mr Strachan has won. It's old ground for me.He did it against an imploding Rangers, in selling mode.

First posts in ages , for what its worth , change is needed in my opinion.

Same old deficiencies surfaced post january again this season , like the previous season when we struggled after half a season. This cannot continue.

No fight , no guts , no determination , nothing. Very few Celtic sides ever went down with such a whimper.

Some claim the manager cannot motivate the players but when 60,000 at CP cannot do it either you know we have a problem more than just the manager.

  • At 08/04/08 11:51, Blogger Subterranean said…

I believe the current Celtic team has been in domestic decline since January 2007. Despite 3 transfer windows and a relatively healthy financial position, the team has not been improved in key areas. We are increasingly unable to overcome at best ordinary domestic opponents.

This is why I think Celtic must consider a change in team management at the end of the season.

I don’t think expressing this opinion makes me any more or less a Celtic fan or supporter.

I also think that reactive dissent and support are legitimate parts of the football crowd dynamic.

Diversity of opinion coupled with respect enriches.

We are not a Stepford Support.

    …and don’t blame Paul67 for my opinion. ;-)

    Paul,

Everyone, apart from our manager, knows that we need to change the personnel (radically) in the run in to change the outcome of this league. Everyone on this blog knows he won’t. We could have played all night on Saturday and not scored.

Am I they only one who cringed when our goalkeeper was in the Motherwell box for the last 5 minutes? Is that what we have come down to, panic...........

Rangers will implode, we all know that but our current first team will lose more points than they will.

Will he make the huge changes needed? NO CHANCE

He is an arrogant wee man who has said he will live or die on his results and team selection. If he doesn’t change and we fail, he must be removed.

If he doesn't change and we win I will be the first to pay homage and wear a hair shirt, I will also eat my hat...........

The recent form (see the bottom left table) would certainly seem to corroborate WGS' assertion that we will not win all our remaining games... only ICT and Gretna are below Celtic!

And if we delve a little deeper:

ICT have only won 1 of their last 6, and have failed to score in 2 of those games.

GRETNA have only won 1 of their last 6, and have failed to score in 4 of those games.

CELTIC have only won 1 of their last 6, and have failed to score in 4 of those games.

So even Gretna can boast that they are doing as well as Celtic at the moment, in that context at least!

Thankfully we know that this is a mere blip, and that in the next game, Celtic are as likely to win 5-0 as Gretna are to lose 0-3.

but you’d think we’d never lost a game,

They have never seen a team so bad,
nae triers and awe look jaded.
sure we always played better in the past,
or has our memory just faded.

We never lost, we always won,
    and played the “Celtic way”
never a bad game have we seen,
    right up until this day.

What ever happened to win, lose or draw,
    and faithful thru and thru.
It disnae take much to become like them,
    a moanin, fickle crew.

So let’s all stand up for the bhoy’s,
and let them know we’re there.
come on Gordon, Mick and Scott,

    On another point.

I have taken some serious and at times, pretty personal insults on this blog for my views.

I can see why many support Mr Strachan. He has not been the unmitigated disaster that i had first feared.

Infact, it is still possible for some to put up a strong case for him to remain.
It can be argued(fairly) by some ,that he deserves another season after winning two titles.
Obviously this is not my view, but it is one that i can understand.

I find it disappointing ,that only PFAYR (and only very recently)has stated that he can see where i have been coming from all along.

I have not come on here and said "I told you so",although i have at times wanted to ram it right into some people who have personally insulted me.

It would be nice if some of you who disagree with my views, could genuinely post ,that they can see where i am coming from.

Then again it's like telling your wife that she looks nice, after she say's that you never tell her she looks nice.

Some of the personal insults on here are uncalled for.

    Awe Naw

I did respond to you last night but unfortunately hit the cyberspace buffers. See below

    Awe Naw

Re Caddis I think you’ll find he was listed in the first team pool and had been training with them for some time. I’m pretty certain Mark Wilson started the season at right back and was seen as Naylor’s left back replacement if necessary with Doumbe or Caddis available to fill in at right back.

In simplicity I have accepted what I was told viz. that approaches were made but for a variety of reasons wages etc nobody was signed and a calculated risk was taken. In hindsight it was a bad decision but imo only in hindsight. On that front I thought we had atrocious luck though I question the fact that Doumbe was not brought in for Caldwell when he was so obviously not comfortable at right back.

You ask “Do you think that it was wise of WGS to quip 30 minutes after Saturdays capitulation against 10 men at home having just got beaten by a single shot yet again "I´ve never had a plan in my life" ???” NO! Gordon has often been his own worst enemy although I have heard him make the same statement before.

You also said MON learned one thing that WGS simply does not believe in. Power and strength first, skill second ...especially in the SPL. I can’t disagree and they are not mutually exclusive as MON’s teams demonstrated.
Latterly though I have found myself questioning more and more the same old same old approach with the team looking like 11 robots without an original thought in their heads and no leadership on view. I think it was during the Gretna game that I posted that all this tippy tappy going nowhere nonsense was doing my head in. Think it was about then that my faith in Gordon’s ability to fix things began to wane as it was pretty obvious that no-one on the park appeared capable of original thought. What came first? The chicken or the egg?

Spoke to a man in the know yesterday. Made an interesting point on team selection. He reckoned that Hinkel has shown some great attacking flair since he came in. Thinks he will do well when he settles. Also thinks he is aggresive and fast going forward. He also reckons that our midfield is failing due to lack of form and physical ineptitude. He suggested we drop Naka, put Hinkel into midfield and play wilson at RB?

    Great verse.

    Fan's are fickle .That's life.

Celtic, just have to deal with it.

During his first spell at Ibrox Walter Smith refused to criticise the fans, for going silent during matches at Ibrox.

He stated that if the crowd was quiet ,it was the teams duty to give them something to shout about.
Create a chance ,get stuck in ,whatever it took to get the crowd on there feet.

He did not blame the fans for lame performances.

We as fans have our part to play.

Aiden has been praised when he has performed well .As have the team.

When they massively underperform ,as they have been doing, they should expect criticism.

Maybe Aiden has other option's than Celtic?

His comments were correct, but naive.

Are we just supposed to be mute, when thins are going so badly?

    All fans are fickle.

Forgot to mention that Riordan should be made to play with under 16s for his untimely interview. If he really thought his outburst would help either Celtic or his position then he must be as thick as his haircut suggests. Get rid!

Evening Times story today: 'DEREK RIORDAN'S weekend outburst at Gordon Strachan was not his first clash with the Celtic manager.

The Scotland cap is reported to be refusing to pay a £1000 club fine for failing to attend a fans' function in February, and has called in the Players' Union.

The ex-Hibs man is said to have taken unwell in the stand as Celtic defeated Hearts 3-0 at Parkhead on February 16.

He maintains club doctor Derek McCormack instructed him to stay away from the rest of the players to avoid spreading the illness.

When he was issued with a club fine for failing to attend the rally the next day, the 25-year-old refused to pay. It's believed the player has ignored three demands to pay up.

SPFA chief Fraser Wishart is trying to solve the dispute.'

    ONWARDS WITH GORDON STRACHAN!

Derbyshire Bhoy I responded last night but paul67´s recent blog limitations mean you can only see it in the post comment window.

    ... see below

    Derbyshirebhoy,

I dont want to flog a dead horse here but Caddis still hasn´t completed 90 minutes for Celtics 1st team. Even when we badly needed it. He was one for the future.

What rankles with me is that the summer when we lost Joos, Mac Namara, Agathe, Laursen and Lambert has never been properly addressed. Two reasonably young inexperienced CB´s have been playing for 2 seasons without a decent left back. I include Naylor in this. He did look good for his first 6 months but he´s not good enough. Doumbe as I say wk knows and there was question marks about Mark Wilson before his injuries. This situation has been allowed to fester for far too long.

My main complaint about WGS is that he is far too complicit and cosy with those that are making the mistakes. If they come out to back him I hope that they come out and take the flak or I honestly believe that they have not found the right man. As somebody said earlier its the Celtic way not to strengthen from a good position.

If I was seeing younger players coming through. An end to expensive mistakes. Players not playing out of position. Better discipline on the park and more canny players. A leader and a captain. Genuine disconsolation from losing players. An end to inconsistency. A dropping of the petulant cut of your nose to spite your face personnel policies when it comes to dealing with players that are reluctant to move. I remember the days when wanting to stay with Celtic was rewarded. We should not compromise our name for money that we already agreed in good faith to spend. A chairman :-)

I wouldn´t know how to react if WGS was given 15m to spend in the summer and I reckon the board dont know either. They will have to back him and bite the bullet and for them it would be the most face saving exercise they could do. If they back him with a big statements then we´ll have to hope its not a Graveson or a Jarosik that they land. That will give them issues at the end of next year if we keep losing to SPL teams as CL participation is important for rapid development as I dont see the scouting and youth setup improving all of a sudden massively.

Anyway the wind blows I will be behind them 100% as will my offspring and theirs. I will ensure it. I want us to address the issues honestly. Cut out the cloak and dagger stuff. Give an honest assessment in where we are and what to expect next and make a concerted effort to try and move back into being a caring football club and seriously address issues like stadium atmosphere, supporter behaviour ... we are moving too quickly to becoming a plc and we need reassurances about the future. The obsession with income streams is alienating decent lifelong Celtic fans. We need to bring them back and provide them exposure to Celtic and we have a chairman who should know that and roll up the sleeves and do something about it especially with his credentials. There should be about 4 games a year where Celtic supporting pensioners aren´t fleeced. Are invited into the Jock Stein Lounge. An extra present if they wear a hooped scarf and a bar tammy and if they are caught singing too loud they´ll get a signed photograph. Maybe then we will feel more rest assured that we´re not just a self financing punt to the highest bidder on a long term Celtic franchise strategy !

    Onwards and Upwards.

    Keep the Faith

    Ed

you’ve taken a wee bit of abuse here these past few hours. From the strangest of quarters too.

I am the son of a Protestant and I am married to a Protestant. I have many mates who are Protestant. I even have a couple of friends who are both Protestant and Rangers Supporters. One of my best friends in life was a Protestant Rangers supporter who (along with a host of others) all through your NIAR would take delight in phoning me to sing the sash or some other nearly proscribed song. He is dead now. A die hard Protestant Rangers supporter, living in California, called me to give me the news and we cried on the phone together in his memory.

He died young, a few years ago now, - in an explosion in Bali - and this world is the poorer for his absence. Much poorer.

I am poorer for the lack of his wind up phone calls. He lost his life and I LOST A GREAT FRIEND. A protestant Rangers supporter and a proud Hun to boot.

He did not have a bigoted bone in his body but he loved his Rangers and he took every opportunity he could to wind me up all through Celtics and my darkest years.
I miss the man like I would miss my brother.

I have noticed a slight degree of gloating coming into your posts of late but to be honest Ed. It does look like your team is going to win this league although my own towel still hangs in the bathroom.

If my old mate Steive Spiers was alive today he wouldn’t be almost gloating on this blog… he’d be never of the phone giving me one rendition after another.

And he’d still be welcome in my Catholic house any which Christmas he’d chose.

My religion does not make me a bigot. My religion does not make me a better man than you. The team I support does not make me a bigot. The team I support does not make me a better man than you. And vice versa. It is the person that makes the person. It is the bigot who makes the bigot.

I have not witnessed bigotry on your part.

Like Stephen Spiers before you, and like many a hun this day, I‘d happily share a beer with you, and argue till the sun came up, how my team is better than yours. And then we’d go to find a pub which was desperate for custom so we could drink and argue some more.

Bigotry sucks - from whichever quarter it is spawned.

Like you I find the institution of Rangers and the football establishemnt who connive with them totally abhorrent. It gives me the greatest pleasure anytime they are beaten but I make a distinction between those who connive in all their dealings to maintain their misguided Protestant supremacy ideology speak and those who like Edward formed an emotional attachment to the club before they became fully aware of its underlying evil. AS I grew up there have been facets of being a Celtic supporter that sat very uneasily with me but I can no more stop supporting them than cut off my right arm. I don't like some things I rail against them where and when I can but I still and always will support Celtic. Abandoning Catholicism was a much easier step for me.

I've never seen any evidence of the things you're accusing Edward of and I'm sorry to say that your attacks and responses to him smack of a bully. I'm very surprised at you.

As I have indicated before, I am not sure that everyone is`entitled` to an opinion. For instance, I am NOT entitled to an opinion on Etruscan Art because I know NOTHING about it.That aside, however, it is NOT an opinion that Celtic CAN win the league; it is a FACT that we can ! Whether we will or will or not is an opinion and there is a difference between those who stick with the hope and those who don`t. Perhaps one is pragmatic and one a dreamer, perhaps one pessimisic and one optomistic but no argument:WE CAN WIN THE LEAGUE.

StoirMhaChroi :-Firstly can I say that I'm sorry for the sad way you lost your friend, he sounds like a good man and I hope that both you and his family managed to take some solace from this fact.
You sound just like me in many ways but coming from the opposite side, we each have no great love for the others team but seperate that from people who support the other team and treat them as individuals rather than some annymous conglomerate. Despite differences in religion, politics, philosophy and least of all though many of us don't treat it that way, football, we are all Jock Thampsons bairns.
Thanks for your post and as with many others on here I'd love to share a pint and argue football with you when no doubt we would both go home at the end convinced we had win the debate.
I would also like to thank a couple of folk from last night, I should have said so at the time but didn't want to get them drawn into the unpleasantness that was going on.

Some months ago I posted that Donati is the type of player who gets managers the sack and I expected /hoped we would never see him in the hoops again. He does not possess a single attribute required in a Celtic first team player.

Players like this show up well in training and now and again show glimpses of their talent eg a long, accurate pass to feet. This may look good but is invariably done when under no pressure and seldom in an area that hurts the opposition.

WGS described Donati earlier in the season as "an interesting project" he wished to develop. In his arrogance WGS insisted he was the man to improve the player to a level fit for Celtic's first eleven. This is a familiar refrain,he made similar comments in relation to LN,ES and GC none of whom have progressed at all.

Donati's selection on Saturday ended WGS career at Celtic.Such "projects" are for reserve teams or feeder clubs NOT for a Celtic First Team.

In Brown's absence ,Hartley and POTY nominee Robson must start IN THEIR PREFERRED ROLES and JVOH must be replaced by Samaras.

Even now I believe Celtic could come very close to winning the league this year given the fixture congestion. It is possible with this squad of players but not with an arrogant and intransigent manager.

The players that above need to be dropped. McMaus isnt a Captain or a Leader. Even at the end of the last game it was Caldwell who was trying to drive forward with the ball.

Since we are in story telling mode, here's one about a friend of mine whom I have known for well over 20 yers. He was brought up what I think would be called a "rangers family" and supported the team as a boy. He was taken to many matches by his father and uncle but as he grew older he gradually became more and more uncomfortable about what he was seeing and hearing.

Finally in his late teens he decided that he could no longer follow a club that promoted bigotry and was followed by bigots. I have tried to convert him to the good guys but that is maybe a step too far.

Now I don't know what it is like to decide to stop supporting your boyhood team, and I don't know if I would have been able to do the same were the roles somehow reversed.

But all fans have a choice. We are all intelligent people, to a greater or lesser degree. We could all, in theory, stop supporting our team if we wanted to.

So why do we always hear of rangers fans who dispise the bigotry etc., but still follow the team? Is their loyalty stronger than their principles? Do they think they can change things from within?

I am behind my number in my job, I know I can't keep doing what I am doing or I won't change this situation, I am therefore going to add risk to my business and change a number of things to "have a go". Any manager would do the same, wouldn't they Gordon?

A word of caution for those calling for Samaras to replace JVoH

While I agree that the big Dutch should probably be dropped - to me Samaras is not what we require.

He does not like to play with his bak to the goal and I fear that he will lose even more in the air than Jan !

Killen was the original back but he has been discarded like many others

Granted that his performances when given a chance have been poor - one must question what the manager saw in him in the first place !

I found the DR interview compelling reading.

perhaps DR hit the nail on the head with this observation
In the semi-final of the competition, against St Johnstone, Strachan was booed by the Celtic support when he took Riordan off. It offered him some solace at the time but he now fears it backfired. "A lot of people have thought that was one of the worst things that could have happened, they think he's not playing me because of that. He doesn't want to look like he is giving in to people.

Rather than lambasting DR as some sort of traitor I am glad he spoke out.

Im a Celtic fan, Im Alive and I just said it! lol!

I meant it in the respect that we should be faithful through and through. I lost confidence big time on saturday but all is not lost. If we win the 2 old firms the pressure is on!

I live in Belfast and also support Cliftonville FC along with Celtic. One of our songs is "Follow, follow, follow, for the Reds are the team to follow, theres the ports and the crues, the glens and the blues, but the reds are the team to follow!" so dont try to attribute it to the Rangers follow follow crap. It is simply two words from the english dictionary!!!

In my view Deeks was right about what he said, but possibly didnt say it at the right time. I have been watching the reserve games on Celtic TV and everything seems to go through him in every move along with the 17 goals he has scored! He needs to be given a chance and a wee run in the team.

Strachan has given enuf chances to:

    Caldwell
    McManus
    Naylor
    Brown
    JVOH
    Donati
    Nakamura

and they have continually played poor. Why is it they keep being given a chance? Is it becuase Donati cost 3 mil, Brown 4.5 mil, Naka 2 mil and jan 3.5 mil?

Is Strachan afraid of being proved wrong by Deeks? To me he is the most natural finisher at the club. He can be played on the left with McGeady on the right as Naka is playing poor also. Even if he is on the bench it gives the manager more of an attacking option if needed.
