A couple of games before Black Sunday we took the trousers off the huns at their own midden in the Craig Bellamy show.
What chance our current team doing that.
We were poor that year by MON's high standards but a million miles better than we are now.
The Juventus game we were still in the hunt for qualification and there's always something at stake in huns games.
If MON had capitulated to a poor huns team due to inept signings, lack of tactical ability and a habit of continaully playing players who are off form or mince or both then yes I would have sacked him.
I repeat at no point in MON's tenure were we as depressingly poor as we are today.

From last post...
Boy Malloy (without the H)
fyi, GS took southampton to an FA cup final and their highest league position since the inception of the Premiership. After he left, they went into freefall and were relegated. Not even the much vaunted George Burley (who some on here would have us believe would've hammered Gordon Strachan had the jammed farts not sacked him mid season) has been able to get remotely close to what Gordon Strachan delivered for that club.
Some are so blind that they cannot see!
-
That article today consisting of the fixture potential mock up, there is one minor flaw that the Scottish Cup Semi-final does not go to a replay.
So they wouldn't have a potential replay on the 21st May.

Just posted this reply when the new article was posted.
swanseabhoy;
it's a very fair question......
If I seen my time fight like lions and give their all for the jersey in 99% of the games they play and lose the title after giving their all I'd think to myself it simply wasn't to be .....but I'd feel very proud of the team and the club and know we'd be back bigger, fitter, stronger and hungrier next season to win that title back.
If I seen a team play like we are and watch the same non performers play week in week out and watch a manager who really does seem to know how to change our fortunes then I'd say thank you.......time for a change.
I don't see a team right now that has the gritty taste for a fight or one that can go on a winning run of 7 games........I really hope I'm so wrong.....but I can only tell it like I see it.
We can't go changing managers every year if we don't win the SPL I agree with everyone who states that but I just can't ignore what I see right now from my club on the park.
I'm now away off to my scratcher.........cheers for the chat

Despite their low status Getafe do have the benefit of playing in a better league than we do. Their squad may not be high profile but they are regularly tested by top teams such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia etc which makes the step up in Europe football easier. Good point about scouting players from the major leagues on the continent and I agree with the sentiment. We did that with Donati though so it doesn't guarantee success (although I still harbour hopes that we’ll see a better player next season). Hinkel is a good example of a well priced player with plenty of ability experienced in the top leagues.
It’s worth remembering though that even Aberdeen caused Bayern some problems at home so maybe the Getafe performance/result doesn’t reflect the true quality on show.

Hi Guys, First a most humble and heartfelt apology to my fellow tims out there whom I criticised for their alleged behaviour in Barca. I am old enough to know better than to be taken in by the Tabs, in my defence however it was being reported in the broadsheets and there was even a non link in a CQN post. To find out that it has been the usual lies is one of the few lights on my horizon..
Edward congratulations to you on your team’s achievements so far this season I was very confident that they would beat Sporting. ( Green and white hoops, good players lacked concentration defensively and no penetration up front . Remind you of anyone?) the sytem is working. Your assessment of your team was more accurate than mime for my team although I honestly had my doubts but allowed my hopes to build up.
Has anyone seen our manager’s comments in the guardian? I invite you all to read them and if you think he should still be in the job then you are not the discerning knowledgeable posters I have always taken you to be. After the last FOD game I reluctantly came to the conclusion that the wee man should be replaced and his utterances since then have only reinforced my opinion. So far we have had him blame the gods of football bad luck and bad playing surfaces for our defeats but what really really worries me is that he says he doesn’t know why we have had such poor results of late. This is the sound of a man who is living life totally inside his own head and should really pack his bags and go. Go with our thanks he has had genuine achievements but as I say imho he has lost it.

Boy Malloy 00.23 - i'm out the game on that one.
PFayr - nothing pains me more than a split in the camp. However what needs to be understood is that people who deliver criticisms on the level which has been delivered here against WGS (feel free to be critical of tactics, signings etc - but some of it is on a personal level)...some people who disagree retort in kind.
Its kind of like the people who get upset at the Holy Goalie confronting them after 90 minutes of abuse. As ma auld Da taught me - if you're big enough to dish it out, be big enough to take it back.

He was a man who brought a huge amount of pleasure to many many celtic fans and I respect the man immensely.
Gordon Strachan has also brought much pleasure and great nights to Celtic Park and in my opinion does not deserve to be abused verbally or hear the abuse from the stands like we seen last week but we are all passionate people some just let it go and take it too far......

Looking at the stats is a sobering experience.
In terms of league wins GS is our fifth most sucessful manager, and in total trophies is sixth best. Means hee-haw in the scheme of things, just if we have a new guy next season, he has to be much better, not just 'couldn't be worse'.
Failure from strength is failure squared. I just made that up.

Bhoy Molloy ,
3 shagging minutes or 3 months , it does not matter when the end result is failure.
Get your head round that one.
Saint Martin was allowed to fail and to inferior rangers sides he did. Our current manager isn't allowed to fail but it looks as if he night fail so he's had his time , its up , time to go. You can be poor for 3 months and loose or you can be poor for 3 minutes and loose , the end result was the same. You'll find it was more than 3 minutes in 2005 though.
Do you understand me or do you want me to break it down even further from layman's terms?

Its a bit of a fallicy that MON inherited a better hand than WGS.
MON inherited a team that had lost the league by 20 points while WGS inherited a team that lost the league by 1 point inthe last minutes of the season and were the Scottish cup holders.
When MON arrived in 2000 we were not even expected to challenge Rangers and the Rug who were spending far more than MON did assembling a side.
MON's first season treble came at a time when Mintys ego was writing huge cheques the club couldnt cover but he still saw them away in all competitions.
MON also recorded a whitewash of five victories against them.
WGS' entire time as Celtic manager has been during a period when Rangers have been either net sellers or spent very little.
Dont get me wrong I'm not dismissing what WGS has achieved, a lot more than I thought he would but his deficiencies as a manger have been bubbling to the surface over the past 18 months and his time is now up.

To those who would have Mr Strachan gone before sunrise,
Think about it.
The time for a managerial change of direction is not now.
Who? Now that is the question.
We already have a manager for season 07/08, as Mr Rogers once said, there'll be time enough for countin' when the dealings done.
My opinion is reserved for after we finally play our only rivals for this league at home.
Fixture computers? You couldn't make it up!
Two leagues in a row must buy some slack? No?
In a game where the margin for error is so slight we could easily be singing the praise of our manager at the moment.
On more important matters, our next match. How do we beat Motherwell this time? Do we need a battering ram in the side to break down the inevitable packed defence?

Michael this is why I dont want to get into a debate on the 2 most succesful managers in the last 30 years.
MON would not have won the league with the squad he left as they were ageing.
You could get into the debate that what would he have done without Henrik. This months 442 magazine has him as one of the best foreign players ever to play in Britain never mind Scotland.
I always look to celebrate our success rather than try to look at our losses. I have been lucky enough to be young enough to miss the real barren years of the 50's until Jock and lucky enough to be old enough to have watched the end of the lions onwards.
Let me say watching us lifting trophies and in the san siro etc is a lot better than waiting on us beating Airdire o win our first trophy in years.
-
o1bhoy
I thought brilliant and I had a beer or three.
As I said previously WGS has achieved more at Celtic than I expected so full respect to him for that.
However beating Milan and Man Utd are not markers to say we are back amongst the best in Europe anymore than Clyde would be amongst the best in Scotland after beating us or Barnsley amongst the best in England after beating Chelsea and Liverpool.
The crux of this argument is/was that MON's record was no better than WGS' and I'm saying that this is nonsense.

Michael Collins, I was pleased to read the last paragraph of your post @ 01.31.
Like you I would always vote for MON ahead of Gordon Strachan, but it annoys me when I hear Celtic fans belittle Gordon's achievements, as though his success just fell into his lap without any effort on his part.
I've posted this before but I think it's worth repeating. Those who criticise Gordon Strachan for collapsing at the first sign of a challenge from Rangers might want to recall that the same thing happened with MON. On the only occasions that Rangers put in a challenge against MON they won the title each time.
I agree that Gordon should probably go at the end of this season, but I think it would reflect better on us as a support if he left with our gratitude for what he achieved in the last 2 seasons rather than under a torrent of abuse. I think he deserves better than that.

Guus Hiddink for me is ,pound for pound, the best manager in the world.
Wherever he goes success follows.
As far as our youth team is concerned the last player to come form our youth system and establish himself was Aiden McGeady who got his debut under MON incidently.
So there would be no difference there.
If we managed to hire a manager of his quality, and you never know till you offer, I would be very surprised nay astounded if he left us in a worse state than we are in this season.
-
Don,t want Gordon to be around to find out if this group has what it takes to be Celtic players.
He has given us almost 3 years of turgid and insipid football.Overthinking and self delusion seems to be his forte. The system and tactics are flawed but to him they are perfect just the victims of bad luck.
For those who claim his coaching skills have developed young players?WHO? Please don,t use Aiden as an example as he is a naturally talented player who would have improved just with age.
Defenders who don,t even have th basics of their positions and a central midfield no more settled or improved over 3 years not to mention strikers who cant score.
These problems lie squarely with coaching deficiencies .
The only youth player to come through in this time is O,Dea and he only was used due to suspension and injury. Was outstanding in San Siro but replaced by Pressley in games thereafter.
I don,t use the argument of wether Mon or him is the better coach as it,s not relevant to our present performances.
Two years in a row we have reached the last 16 and on both occasions we played like we where happy to just make it with damage limitation our mantra.I always believed in the spirit of 67 when 11 wee gallus guys strutted their stuff to a watching world.Even when we have been rubbish i still felt on our day with our great support we could take it to anybody.
We do have a pretty good squad and with a good coach could easily be back on top again.

I got to agree with you about your choice of replacement for Gordon Strachan being Guus Hiddink. Success truly sticks to the guy.
You might remember that it was he who was in contention for the job when MO’N got it.
However times and people move on and Guss is now the manager or Russia. Do you have any idea how long his contract runs? (he has a few years to go) do you have any idea how much he is being paid? (he is earning bucket fulls)
do you know how deep in the brown stuff he is back in his home country? (deeper than I am)
Do you have any idea how many other clubs of repute are courting him? (many)
Throwing names into the ring is easy. Throwing in a name that may come and deliver, now that is the hard part.
-
Gordon Strachan is staying!
-
And I am delighted about that!
-
Kitalba
There are many reasons why Guus Hiddink would not come to Celtic. The same reasons would apply to any manager outwith the SPL.
So do we settle for Mark McGhee or John Hughes or even Craig Levein.
Theres no doubt it would take some tremendous work to secure such a prestigous manager but how do we really know unless we try.
Am I alone in thinking that the name Celtic still gains recognition all over the football world and many who seek a challenge would surely see the stellar potential the club has.
I think at times we sell ourselves short when it comes to how big a club we are percieved to be.
The ultimately ill fated move of Paul Le Guen to Rangers was one we all said would never happen for all the reasons we are saying a manager such as Hiddink wouldnt come to us .
We can only ask.
Estadio
So Gordon stays. Whats going to change from this year to next, apart from falling attendances.

More likely replacements - Mcghee or Levein.
Until it's mathematically impossible, I will not give up on our title hopes, however slim. I hope the players feel the same way.

I feel much better now!

Michael:
I have a problem.
I’ve always fancied buying a Ferrari. However, there are a few issues I’ve got to get sorted before I go into that showroom to get my dream.
First problem, do I buy the F430 Spider or do I buy the 599 GTB.
Second problem, I love Racing Green but Ferrari don’t do Green.
Third, fouth, fifth… nineteenth, twentieth problem – I won’t bore my self boring you with those irrelevances.
Twenty-first problem that renders all before purely academic – I’m not exactly flush and to be honest I’m still into the bank for a bob or two.
But they say my credit line is good for a million or two.
But they trust me that much they want collateral.
There is one last problem though, I could always get a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 in Racing Green.
There in lies my problem. I want it all. And although I don’t have the readies to hand there are a lot of people begging me to borrow it. Wonder why?
Michael, I’ll let you into a wee secret, the day Martin O’Neil got the Celtic job I sat and listened to the car radio in a pub car park in Berkshire for almost three hours as Talk Sport prattled on about the pro’s and cons of the appointment.
Now don’t get me wrong, I loved Martin O’Neil, still do, but I was disappointed then that Guus Hiddink was not given the nod that day. For lot’s of reasons.
We could and we should chase the likes of Guus Hiddink but we had better be prepared to lose five million per annum from the hip wedge, because that is what a man of that calibre costs, should such a man agree to come to Scotland.
And god help the board should they achieve such an appointment and said appointment does not deliver.
Whose fault would that be? Whose head would we be looking for on a plate then?
-
-
-
Kitalba
If you want a shot of a ferrari I'll give you a loan of one of mine. Anytime.
The problem with your line of argument is that every manager outside the SPL would carry the same issues you have highlighted about Guus.
Moyes is on good money at Everton with a large transfer kitty so why would he come to Celtic.
Mowbray is about to take West Brom to the Premiership so why would he come back.
The thing with good managers is they are in demand and so persuading them that they should leave a settled job and persuading their employers to let them go will not be easy.
If we want the easy option then fine. There are plenty of them McGhee,Hughes,Levein etc but taking the easy option is whats landed us in this mess in the first place.
MON was our best manager since Jock Stein and guess what we had to chase him and persuade him to leave Leceister and pay them a sizeable wedge.
Our next appointment is vital as IMO it will shape the direction our club takes for the forseeable future and we better get it right because Rangers have caught and overtaken us.
Get it right and we can drag them back and get our boots back on their throats as they were last year but get it wrong and the much vaunted GOD may come true but not for us.
Look at the attendances this year. If they continue to fall in this way and are reflected in season book renewals then we are on the slippery slope back to the attendance levels of the early nineties.
The fans need a show of ambition from the club. They need to know for sure that the board share their dreams and songs and hopes for the future other than a neat and tidy balance sheet.
We deserve nothing less.
-
Michael:
I’m not arguing with you; not at all. It looks to me like you are arguing with yourself. And nobody is winning.
I am in the same game as you. I am a contractor and the dollar, within reason, is my god. Just like every other contractor in this world.
Football players and football managers are no different. They have a shelf life and families to provide for. Only a fool would give up a nice safe job to drop to one quarter of his wages and move to the bigoted bile he would enjoy by taking on the Celtic managers role.
Yes Celtic is still a name. A name that is synonymous with what though?
I have never advocated any other Scottish manager for the Celtic job other than the one who presently holds the position. I had hoped that he would be given time to prove himself just like Alex at Manchester United. However it seems that Gordon Strachan has turned out to be a victim of his own success. Whose fault is that?
Every person, every company, every organisation, every government, all should aspire to be better than what they are, but you won’t achieve it if you lose sight of reality by butchering your own.
To back Gordon Strachan and go for the long haul that is the hard option.
I am a pragmatic person who veers to the optimistic. I think Gordon Strachan is okay. At the moment.
Now I’m not going to throw any name into the ring as his successor, but Michael, honestly, who, that would come, within our budget, (meets the criteria) can you name - that is waiting for the call.
How do you know the board did not try to match your ambition for the club in the last transfer window; or the one before; or the one before; or the one before?
You don’t. You only see what is not, not what others tried to make... ‘is’.
One thing that beats me, where did all the good English football players go to with the influx of the continentals to the EPL.
Wouldn’t be the championship by any chance?
As for the attendances, I personally cannot do anything about that Michael, but I will tell you of this. Gordon Strachan or no Gordon Strachan – I will still be a double season ticket holder next year. If my bonus comes in before the due date I will be a triple season ticket holder. Now that is not a boast as to how rich I am because I’m not, I work very hard to be skint, but if my buying one more ticket means one more of my student nieces or nephews get to see the Celtic and I don’t have to burst my nut bothering about Christmas or Birthday presents then I'll gladly give Celtic my money.
As for having a go in your Ferrari, you’re on.

And so the Wetherspoon's Real Ale Festival (1.29 pounds a whip) enters the last three days, The Tippler's Triduum.
And some of the big boys were rolled out last night. I tried two and there was only one winner :-
YO-HO TOKYO BLACK 5.0% ABV
Good Lord, no.
The programme blurb:-
This is brewed by Japan's Yo-Ho Brewing Company at Marston's Brewery, Staffordshire, especially for this JDW festival. Head brewer Toshi Ishii describes this beer as his first masterpiece, created at the Yo-Ho Brewery. It's a robust porter-style beer, brewed using American hops and chocolate and black malts, to create a pleasing, complex flavour with a good underlying bitterness.
Now no-one does a 'good underlying bitterness' quite like me but I don't go big on porter (I consider Guinness to be a different animal altogether) and this stuff was abhorrent. With the look and consistency of crude oil it assaulted the senses and the taste left me bewildered, it was as if someone had filled an espresso machine wi those wee hard licorice tablets (Imps, I think we called them, came in a wee tin yonks ago)and forced cold dishwater through them. As so many have stated on here - I won't be back for more.
MARSTON's PEDIGREE SIX 6.0% ABV
Aha ! I get it now. Allow the Japs access to your facilities to produce a nauseating beverage which makes yours seem fabby-do. Oh the cunning !!
The programme blurb :-
This is brewed exclusively for JDW with a higher ABV, giving an extra character to the flavour associated with Pedigree. The classic Burton aroma is followed by a hop flavour, full malt body and undertones of fruit, supplying a spicy edge.
Pedigree, I'm your chum. I always enjoyed a pint of the regular brew but this is a cut above. I'm glad the Teser introduced it at the weekend as it's definitely a work-misser in the making. Keeping with the coffee-type analogy this is like going from the regular Pedigree's mellow Bird's to a regular Nescafe. More today and no mistake.

I see the MON v GS debate took place again last night.
Coincidence as the signing success rate of both came up in the pub yesterday.
Both have fairly poor signing records at the cheaper end of the market. It is very difficult to buy well at this level.
When MON spent £5 million plus on Lennon, Hartson, Sutton it worked.
The better the player signed the better chance of success.
The debate on GS will he go or not comes down to how well he would do in the transfer market.
If we have a budget of £8 million (probably from the sale of players) would you trust GS to get it right this time?
I personally don't think we are far off being a good team as I think we have a better squad than Rangers.
We are not a team at present, we look like 11 strangers thrown together.
Football should be simple and you should be playing to your strengths.

Welcome Greenback1888, like the name. “Not feeling intellectual enough”, good one.
Bhoy Molloy, I have deleted one of your posts for a mild profanity against our manager after letting several go.
Dick Byrne 1:57, agree. The whole torrent of abuse thing is tiresome, without perspective and does us no credit.
-
Strachan's record in the transfer market is poor. He signs players then tries to fit them into his rigid formation, e.g. Gravesen, Jarosik & Brown all came from teams who played with 3 in the central midfield, Naka was a playmaker who played through the middle in Italy. His 'big' signings have generally been flops even though they are good players. The only conclusion is that its the manager who can't get the best out of these players and isn't prepared to change tactics to suit the players he's signed.
-
Estadio , briefly checking on the blog the last few days but have no energy to post. The negativity just kills me. Thanks for being the very odd one out and more than just trying to justify our successful Manager Gordon Strachans merits but going past this and just saying that he's our man this year , win , lose or draw , and next year. I am with you and this isn't a statement against all others . Much as I dislike the split in the support having a split is not in itself a good reason to punt a good manager , possibly a great manager , to take on a new bet.
If Gordon Strachan can't turn it back around in another twelve then we move on. I stand by my own simple opinion that we have a right good team here and that they will turn it around with the addition of a few more key players. All season I have thought that our weak spots were our inability to turn possession into goals. The dark side have used anti football to turn lack of possession into breakaway goals when the attacking team break formation. The three bhoys we have up front no doubt go out to score . They aren't in the same league as cadet and Henrik , Sutty and Big bad John who I remember getting pelters for percieved flaws but who banged them in anyway and what goals I remember. This is where we need the big spend. You win games by scoring goals. It takes the media away from the other parts of the team. I think Samaras shows skill and flair. Skippy has done well in the first part of the season and JVOH , sorry can't see why he's still with us. BBJ could also header the ball well , held it up much better and had a far far better eye for goal and he was our third choice striker when Henke and Sutty were available. Keep the faith. I like the E-Tims team selection of the local boys Hartley , Robson ,Caldwell and McGeady in front of a solid back four with Samaras and Skippy (or JVOH) up front. Gordon Strachan has to get it right this weekend. I think he will.
-
Paul,
You're spot on about Getafe. Anyone who watches Spanish football will know that the standard of player there is high. Note also that PSV and Porto do well on a regular basis with less resouces than we have.
As regards the CL seeding, there is such despondency around the place that I can't even consider euro football just now. When you're going 4.5 hours against Dundee U, Aberdeem and Motherwell (all at home) then you know you have problems.
I have backed WGS for 2.5 seasons but this last 6 months I have become totally disillusioned with him in a great many ways.
I cannot contemplate him as manager in August. The longer he stays the worse it will get and then it will take longer to correct. He's in the papers this morning telling us stats this and stats that and how the performances are okay - no they are not, they are totally unacceptable.
Most importantly he has lost the confidence of the fans, I would say almost the entire support. We will back him to the last game as is proper but at the end of May it's over.
He goes.
-
First time poster here, been reading the blog for a good while now and always entertaining!
You know what's going to happen tomorrow... We'll win away at Motherwell, probably 2-1 with us being 2 up after an hour and Motherwell scoring with 10 to go and us grimly hanging on from there on in! Anyway it will give us hope and have everyone believing again going into Wednesday night's game against the hun, only for us to get mugged again by a team with something which we are sadly lacking - self belief and confidence!
Unfortunately I fear that the board WILL give Strachan another year to sort things out, by which point the hun will be even stronger and we'll be a mess!!
-
How many of you out there think Rangers have better players than we have ?
Thought so.
The only thing we are missing is not a manager it's a good manager.
-
Taurangabhoy,
Well said. You put into words what I have been feeling for a couple of days.
I don't know what it is about the younger generation, but everything has to be black or white. Either our manager or our team are the greatest or the worst ever (that latter opinion has been voiced on here more than once recently).
We will only improve as a team playing against good football teams. There is a severe dearth of these in the SPL, including the current leaders. We need to move away asap. Will it happen? Don't put your house on it.
-
hello iminthedarkhere
you are right the dark side has confidence and self belief. Episode three the return of the number 7 is what I see happening next year not Darth Smith getting stronger and us in a mess. By the way can you drop me a few tips on the share market , lotto numbers and more useful things that you know will happen 12 months from now. When I am rich I will send the money back to Celtic honest and your 10% cut.
Look at the big picture and trust in the force.
st anthony if you think we have better players then MON didn't leave them for us some wee ginger who gets hated for something he did either brought them to us or brought them through .
Instant puddings. Anyone.

I remember reading that Porto spent much less on wages than we did the season they won the CL.
Perhaps we could get involved with a second division team in Italy, Spain or Portugal.
With regards to CL next year. If we qualify we should be looking for UEFA cup qualification.
Some of the teams who will be ranked above us have done nothing in the CL.
Paul are any plans afoot to take account of co-efficient points gained in CL against UEFA Cup?
Apart from the occassional performance the football has been fairy poor since we lost to AC Milan in last year's CL.
Over the last year I have been looking forward to meeting up with my friends more than the football.
The game has been secondary.
I can understand why attendances have been, and will continue to be low.
It's not like the 90s when we were financially done.
This season is petering out the way that the Dalglish season did.
I just want to see the back of this season and start again in August.
-
iminthedarkhere I was only having a laugh. Feel free to laugh back.
Parkheadcumsalford good to know that a few us have the same way of feeling the pain but seeing a bright future. Feels a bit like circling the wagons and probably more so when I actually respond to posters who think the same. For those who don't , you might be right , I hope your not. I am open to changing my mind at some point but not at the first fall. Celtic family lets agree to disagree with open minds.
-
Paul
I may be wrong but I think you will find that, as a result of Rangers win on Thurs, Celtic are actually in Pot 3 if all the games go according to form (that is if they win their 2 qualifying games if they finish second in the SPL).
Cheers.

I usually like your posts even though don't always agree.
Ferguson , Murinho , Wenger
please
If Strachan was Ferguson he would have another four years after this one to win another trophy before the board thinks about sacking him
If Strachan was Murinho the sharp suited men and Desmond would have handed him 300 Million squid and told him win the SPl but don't worry about the champions league. Teach our players how to dive well.
If Strachan was Wenger , recruit the harlem globetrotters of football, win he haw , look dazed and be optomistic about the future.
If Strachan was Strachan he would take a team with an average age older the browns Scotland team , let our hero's , Neill Lennon etc move off gracefully and with dignity . Be prudent , keep our club on finacial footings , buy youngers players with potential , bring a few starlets through , Aiden , Maloney , big Mick (he might not be the captain and strength we all wanted but without that pressure he might STILL be a valuable Celt) . Do all this rebuild a team please. Sell as much as you buy. ok
What !!!!You won two SPL's AND last sixteen CL. Must have been easy against easy beats.
Rubbish football since AC Milan.
Our perspective is screwed. We beat AC Milan , Shaktar Donesk (spent 40 million) and Benfica.
We are losing to the team we don't want to lose to . An instant change won't necessarily mean this changes , in my opinion it means that a change now makes it more likley that this will continue. Keep the faith. Celtic.

Curtailed the length of holiday as the thought of another two days in a freezing caravan was anathema to all of us.
I have come to the conclusion that Moffat down to the borders and across to Dumfries is just Ayrshire without the sea.
Am ticketless for the game - are they still allowing matches to be played at Fir Park? Or has there been some subtle sorcery applied to the bog of eternal stench?
-
01:57, Dick Byrne - sense and sensibility.
-
there is no way that we can retain the manager for next year....if he fails at any of the early challenges next year there will be meltdown......there will be demands for his sacking which exceeds anything we have seen so far....asking a team to perform under that type of pressure makes it more rather than less likely that failure will occur.....
a new manager, who is seen as a popular choice, as MON was when he arrived, will be cut some slack ....the support will get behind him the way they did with MON, even when there are reverses....
At the first reverse next year , if WGS is still in charge, the support will be screaming for his head....and we will have to make a change, in the way that there was no way Barnes could survice after supercallygoballistic
and thats before you consider the effect of season ticket sales if he remains in charge, or whether he deserves to be in charge after the way this season has turned out.....
the manager decides how to spend his budget...he and he alone has decided that caldwell and mcmanus are good enough at central defence not to bother even signing a single central defender in the last 2 years......that type of flawed decision making gets most managers sacked....and deservedly so....
look at the risks attached to allowing him to stay on..
1. Season ticket sales are likely to drop , possibly significantly
2. You will not put a dent in Rangers current confident mood with Gordon at the helm for next year
3. The support, or a large chunk of them, will not tolerate a slow start or failure to qualify for the CL group stages. Given that reaction we could be looking for a new Manager in mid August, with 2 weeks of the window left and a squad not signed by whichever manager we appoint
4. Gordon has not shown any real sign that he acknowledges the shortcomings in the squad . He seems comforted by statistics that tell him his players are running as hard as ever, and creating as many chances as he would like. If we want a manager who can get results based on statistics, we should appoint Stephen Hawkings. Gordon seems to forget that confidence is paramount as well as team spirit and a will to win. When confidence and togetherness goes, teams with miles more technical ability than us struggle. Barca are currently demonstrating this perfectly
The risks attached to signing a new manager are
1. The same risks you face when you sign a new manager, which we will have to do at some point in the near future anyway.

with respect
season tickets holders do have more weight to there opinions. They are the lifeblood of Celtic football Club.
I would be if I could , instead I live celtic every day at the other end of the World
1. I don't know anyone who has a season ticket and is planning to chuck it in. You base this on the way that you feel just now.
2. The only thing that will put a dent in rangers confidence is if their fans booed them , turned against them and we start beating them. The only one that we can help with is the last point. We have two more games against them this season
3.Agreed. Chnaged days , we now demand CL. Who gave us this the last two years. The new man or...
4.Confidence is something that we can help with. Strachan will do what is in his power . Gordon doesn't need to point to the short comings of his squad. The rags do this and the echo is loud and clear on the blogs. In my opinin Strachan is trying to give his players confidence when too many others are free to put the pressure on. Strachan stays or goes with his choices. Do you think he doesn't know this. Yet he chooces to back his players and tell them they are good enough with whatever tools he has. If he thought putting on a scarf and booing the hoops from the stands would instill confidence I am sure he would try it. I don't think he is comforted. I have confidence in Gordon Strachan , in the long run . If he doesn't live up to that he knows what the story is.

The Motherwell game tomorrow will be postponed. The next time it is due to be played, it will be postponed too. This will edge us ever closer to the end of the season, and if it suits the establishment team, the season will be extended for them, and for us too.
A far-fetched scenario of course, but would you be surprised? Having been on my way the last twice the match was postponed, I won't believe the game is taking place until the first kick. And even then...
-
I don’t want to get into the debate over whether Gordon Strachan the Celtic Manager is a good manager or a bad manager, whether Gordon Strachan the Celtic Manager is a successful manager or a dud; whether Gordon Strachan the Celtic Manager should stay or go, whether Gordon Strachan the Celtic Manager told me to my face that I was a dick and to get out of his face or not, nope, but one thing that is most certainly beyond debate is that he is the Celtic Manager and he is not only under attack from out with, he is attack from insidious quarters from within.
As it stands he is the only manager we have. He represents our club. He is the most focal point of Celtic and he is taking a fair bit of brown stuff from a lot of quarters.
Rightly or wrongly he is still our manager and your public displays of bile are indicative of you as a person… a thinking human being?… they are not indicative of him.
If you selfishly want to drag the glory that is Celtic through the slime of press derision, fuelled by the self inflicted ammunition of your own beating gums, so be it.
If you believe yourself so righteous let your epitaph read:
“ I publicly slagged a Celtic manager while we were still chasing a winable league and I did so repeatedly and with enthusiasm. I’m that mongrel Celtic supporter in the white hat, swinging the white flag, complemented by my swinging man boobs under my big girls blouse.
But god am I proud of my public capitulation. Every Rangers supporter I know thinks I’m a man”.
No they don’t ya plastic tube. They despise you your surrender, they despise you your weakness. And you lap it up.
One thing and one thing only I like among the Rangers supports repertoire:
“Oh the cry was No Surrender”, - Hun Rhetoric or what. Questions the warrenty on your sphincter eh?
Nobody can stop you – ‘your surrender’; and I hope you live to your nineties to reflect upon your wisdom of capitulation.
Each and every one of you will do exactly as you will do. Whatever that will be I hope history proves your decision right, for on your conscience be it.
No I don’t want to talk about Gordon Strachan the Celtic Manager, and the only one we have, who is subject to subtle - and not so subtle abuse - from 360 quarters, not at all, I want to ask others have they noticed how often Celtic players, after being the victim of physical abuse, are left either to writhe in pain, or face their aggressors on their lonesome.
How often does Aiden McGeady take a sore one, how often does Scott Brown go down because his opponents tackle was ever so slightly over waist height and how often do their team mates do nought. Not a flicker, not a single expletive, not even a mild one, nope “Tut! Tut! Ref, that dick almost broke his leg” will no longer be the vernacular.
What I want to know is not if the team have a problem with their manager, I want to know if the team if have a problem with each other.
I was brought up playing that if one gets hit the ‘team’ hits back. It doesn’t seem to be that way any longer. A lot of players at present seem to shrink the fight as much as they shrink the ball. They appear to argue more with each other than ‘sledge’ their opposite number.
Seems to ,it is not only in the stands where big girls blouses are the sartorial dress of the day, there appears to be a sympathy for cross-dressing on the field too.
If you’re not up for the fight then phone in sick, your parrot has died, you’ve no clean underwear and haven’t had so since ICT last year, you are pessimistically indisposed by your apathy of lethargy, you’ve died and are waiting for the undertaker, whatever, if you ain’t got the bottle… don’t go to the stadium. You’d be as good as two men less.
I suppose I could say the same for some of the players of late too.
Here’s to the first Celtic supporter who is that secure in himself he turns up at Parkhead wearing his man bra outside his big girls blouse.
Now that really would be the tipping point.
Get a life and get a fight.

Cormac McCarthy espouses the notion that you could form a graph that charted the most lucky man in the world all the way down to the unluckiest man in the world. This could be applied to football teams too.
He is quick to add that said graph would not indicate who was deserving of said luck.

Hopefully a decent result tomorrow will help a bit of the gloom, but I don't think it will change much in the way of sentiment towards our manager.
I can't help but wonder if the entire blame for this season's debacle should be laid at his door.
Indeed, we still haven't had any explaination of what went on during last summer's transfer window.
Many people point to a poor December for our current predicament, but the seeds of our demise were sown in August.
There are a number of possible scenarios of what could have happened. Either:
1. the manager felt his squad was strong and good enough for the season ahead;
2. A budget was in place, but Peter Lawell failed to close the deals; or
3. the summer transfer window went as planned and we spent what was sanctioned by the Board.
Personally I find all three scenarios unacceptable.
Why?
We knew Rangers would be rejuvanated under Smith and McCoist.
We knew the stats showed winning three consecutive titles was difficult.
We knew winning the league would give automatic entry in to the Champions League.
We knew Murray had once again rolled the dice and failure would put Rangers in a very difficult financial position.
In short, we had them. So why, oh why did we screw up so badly in the summer?
Complacency? Arrogance? Risk aversion?
Murray is indeed a gambler. But this season has shown the custodians of our Club to be over prudent.
I still maintain the capital base of Celtic is materially understated.
We have between £25 and £30m of assets in the form assets in the form of Boruc, McGeady, Nakamura and Brown.
Our stadium is worth a lot more than is shown on the balance sheet.
As is the ground around the stadium following the decision on the Commonwealth Games.
To cede our advantage in the manner we have is unacceptable and the performance of those running the club has been nothing short of incompetent.
Heads have to roll.

I have been trying for months to work out why this Team can't cut it.
We have significantly better individuals. We are younger and fitter. We have the larger support.
I left the Motherwell game completely baffled - the 1st 15 minutes was as good as you will see anywhere but with no end product, we then capitulated.
I'm not a statistician but WGS is fond of the facts so I thought I'd delve a little -
1. Shots on goal this season
Tic 438
Them 427
2. Hit woodwork
Tic 24
Them 14
3. Player with most shots on goal
Tic Skippy 72 (46 on target)
Them Ferguson 57 (29)
By the way JOV has had 54 (29) and Aiden is our 2nd top predator with 71 shots / 38 on target!
If we converted just 1% (yes ONE!)more of the chances we've had we'd have won the league.
Bizzarely (given the media trumpeting of Weir and Ugly
Betty) - we have the best defensive record! Why? Arthur and the midfield.
Why does Ferguson have so many chances - he does so because he has confidence in going forward - he doesn't have to worry about break aways or his defence. Scotty does, he has been doing the work of 3 players all season and in particular when Donnut plays. Naka has been a shadow of his former self since his injury.
The full backs also are afraid to push up (think back to Hinkel's 1st game when he didn't know better and stormed forward at every opportunity).
So - we have a midfield who are scared of pushing on, full backs who sit tight for fear of letting the opposition get at our centre backs and a disfunctional Centre Forward in JVoH. We also have 2 wrong footed players playing wide but that's another topic (does WGS not realise that cutting in every time doesn't work??!!)
The answer - drop Mick, Caldwell (the greatest sinner), Naka and JOV. Play Bobo, Darren, Robson and Sami - I'd bet a weeks wages that we'd beat Rankers twice AND win the league

PS The guy who was looking for a bar in Tenerife - the ONLY place to go is Hoops - Big Stevie the owner is a diamond and VERY Celtic Minded!

pfayr,
it's in Los Christianos - opened about 8 months ago- populated by the crewe who used to go to Joe Regans.
Big Stevie is one of the most comitted Tims you'll ever meet and he runs the place! The Tenerife CFC come over 5 or 6 tomes a year to the games otherwise they go to Hoops. Fiddlers is also good but if there's an English game on can be mixed company.
Not going to have a pop at the support again but .... FFS, we still have a league to win - the neuveau Tic supporters can shoulder part of the blame this season if we don't do it (which we can!)

Iminthedark. Bienvenue. Excellent name by the way.
Yes I've seen that scenario far too often these past two seasons so you could be right.
Put that against Rangers only deeding a draw, Walter Smith and then we have a Tommy Burns v Walter Smith scenario - and we all know what happens there.
BUT!!!!!
Its better to light a candle than scream in the dark. So I've give this prediction.
We'll win od Wed.
Why?
We've no other choice.

Could I appeal for one thing? That is a modicum of respect for the current Celtic manager.
Gordon Strachan is the manager of Celtic Football Club now and for the foreseeable future. Gordon Strachan may have many faults but a lack of effort is not one of them.
A person who puts in a lot of effort on our behalf and fails is worthy of at least the respect that he put in that effort. If his effort fails to produce the right level of results over a period then he will be replaced but surely with the respect that any manager who has delivered 2 championships two cups and two unprecedented last 16 Champions League qualifications, deserves.
I believe that the man deserves respect for his effort and that those who abuse him show themselves up as being much less worthy of respect than the man they are abusing. They act like playground bullies and deserve to be shunned as such.
It amazes me to think that Wim Jansen who walked out on the club after one season appears to be accorded much more respect than our current manager. I also wonder why his name never crops up when we are talking of replacements?
Currently we have a championship to play for which though unlikely is not impossible to win but perhaps more importantly we have two matches against Rangers where it is essential that we put down a marker for next season. Both issues demand that the Celtic team has a concerted, united, unreserved, unequivocal support behind it, a support worthy of those green and white jerseys, a support aware of the history and tradition of a group who do not lie down willingly and have their tummy tickled.
I ask the Celtic support to demonstrate unity in the face of adversity and suggest that the best possible way of beginning that process is by showing respect for the Celtic manager, whoever he may be.

Last week the hopes of a good show against Motherwell took a huge knock when the team line-up was announced.
This week Gordon Strachan has been defending his team as playing well and being unlucky. Hmmm (copyright Paul67).
Big test for this weekend's Motherwell match. Gordon will appear stubborn and thrawn if his line-up contains the names of Naylor or Donati and if Samaras and Robson do not start.
Finally, having read through Gordon's Biography, I am amazed that he is treating Riordan in the same manner he castigated Sir Alex for using on him. Shocking man management!!
