Home support can lift Celtic over winning line

Would there be any doubt in the outcome of tonight’s game if the 53,000 of us in attendance gave the team eight times the vocal backing approximately 7,000 Celtic fans give at Ibrox?

Every team in European football is familiar with the phenomenon of having a more vocal away support, when fans are concentrated at one end of the ground and outnumbered, than when home supporters are dispersed throughout the stadium, but Celtic Park remains one venue that can rise to the occasion.

Our Champions League endeavours have produced one of the best home and worst away records in the competition, which leads me to believe that the Celtic Park support contributes enormously to the outcome of home games.

You and I have our part to play tonight. Enjoy yourself.

There will be two Live Updates and a Match Reports articles tonight:

Celtic v Rangers, first half live updates, will publish at 19:30
Celtic v Rangers, second half live updates, will publish at 20:45
Celtic v Rangers, March Reports, will publish at 21:45

I will not be available to issue a “new article posted” comment, so watch out for them.

In terms of you cheeky comment about my "untutored nonsense", let me retort; you might well work with budgets, but that does not mean you understand them. I drive a car with an internal combustion engine, but I know as much about engines as a monkey knows about a banana.

Well that's if folks. I'm off. Unfortunately not to the game or as I would prefer the pub at this time but to Ayr sea front with my son and his friends as I am on an entertaining children afternoon. This makes work seem easy.

So it's Ayr, drop kids of at 5'ish, pub for a few jars, to the game, celebrations all round, another few beers in celebration of a fine 3-1 victory, home and then bed.

As if I am not tired already that is going to knock the 7... out of me.

Hail Hail. Enjoy everyone, apart from you EdwardUrsus.

It's an ALL or NOTHING game.

Paul is right. The fans have to be up for it big time.

No point in moaning about any perceived lack of effort from players if YOU are not belting out your support for the team.

ALL or NOTHING games from the past?

    I'm thinking 4-2 v huns in 1979, 5-0 v St Mirren in 1986, 1-0 to the treble-busters v huns in 1989 Cup Final, 2-0 v St Johnstone in 1998.

I was at every one, and I'm there tonight.

    Winning is all that matters.

Go out and support your team, The Celtic Way.

    Tully.

Quick reference to the Sunday Herald nonsense. Just received the email below from the Sports Editor - seems a reasonable INITIAL response!?

Thank you for your email. Please accept my apologies for the unacceptable terminology used by Kenny Hodgart in his article of last Sunday.

We are currently looking at why this reference was included in the first place and how it slipped through our production system. We are also formulating a response for the newspaper next week. In the meantime I can only sincerely aplogise and assure you we are treating this matter very seriously.

    Kind regards

Good to see an apology. Hopefully the printed version in the next edition of the Sunday Herald will be clear for all to see.

On a separate note, is it true that Rankers have won the best matchday hospitality award ?! After CockroachGate ?! Now we definitely know the institutions are behind them !

Big score for us tonight. Goals to rain in.

In my humble opinion tonight more than most is about discipline. The players will hopefully realise that he who laughs last laughs loudest. Walk away from confrontation. Keep a lid on thy holy gob, yes sir, no sir the order of the day. Take the tackles and get up with even more conviction to beat this bunch.

I have witnessed several teams try to out do Watties tactics, and believe me I still believe lady luck has shone upon them. Those who have a good shot on them try the good shot. Those who can harass an bully do so. Those who have the skill to dazzle, dazzle. We can beat this mob and I still faithfully believe do so convincingly.

ps, Those who need to concentrate 100 percent all of the game, DO SO. No stupid mistakes, pass the ball about, give 100 percent its all we can ask.

ps WGS dont take 15 minutes to make a substitution when they can be done in several.

I do hope Paul Hartley makes it (not another bloody hamstring), or is WGS playing mindgames.

In his abscence oh who to play. Well I actually think Evander could step up to the mark.

I fully agree that the 100% support from the fans is important tonight.

With our full backing im sure that the team will win but if for some reason we don't win we can puff our chests out and feel pride that we did everything we could for the cause and we were united as a club.

    Token,

Mani from the Roses/Primal Scream is a Celtic fan.

"It’s hard to gauge the number of musical styles that Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield has brought to the fore through his work with both The Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

And while he may have stamped soul, funk, reggae, folk, dance and even country styles all over his tuneful indie rock rhythms and grooves, he admits that it is his Irish background that has been essential in playing with the more traditional English style of John Squire in The Stone Roses and Scots in Primal Scream.

He said: “I’ve got the Celtic in me. We (the Irish) feel the folk and country more. John is a good mate but it’s true that we feel music in a slightly different way.”

“We’re more in touch with the folk and it filters through similarly to black music there is a certain soul. It’s an unconscious thing but always there. It’s an unseen force.”

Mani believes that while a unique Celtic presence remains strong in Britain, he feels an autonomous Irish identity is no more.

He said: “The Irish identity is getting lost from generation to generation. It will always be there with the Celtic thing but we have assimilated.”

“We are The People’s Republic of Mancunia no one really considers themselves English. We are made up of many cultures and creeds.”

“My mum and my uncles still speak with the thickest Irish brogue and they have been here about 45 or 50 years why would you change it?”

“They went through some difficult times, you had to work your way up but it makes you try that bit harder. It’s always there, it’s who you are.”

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan recently said he often whistles the Primal Scream song Sometimes I Feel So Lonely after games at Parkhead a revelation the group were honoured to hear about.

Mani, whose roots lie in Co. Wicklow, said: “I love Gordon Strachan. I thought: ‘We are going to have to play a gig at Celtic Park’ when I heard that. Gordon is invited out with us next time we are in Glasgow we are all big Celtic fans.”

    TLW,

My brother had told me that Mani was a Celtic man - i also remember seeing him on Soccer am a few years back and he mentioned that he was a Celtic man as well as being a man u supporter. I think his quote was along the lines of "like most of the Manc bands we love our footy and whilst the guys are split between both Manchester clubs most of us love Celtic!" if I remember correctly!

As to his national allegiances I think this wee quote from an interview says it all:

"So, your thoughts on the World Cup?

I'm glad England didn't win it.

    Why?

I don't support them. They are a piece of shit. I support the Republic of Ireland"

I also know Bobby Gillespie is a mad Celtic fan.

I've told Zbyszek that I wont be at the game to-night but I would pass on his message to anyone going via BBs.

Seemingly he wrote a great article about Celtic on the Legia Warsaw site about Celtic, and Zbyszek told him to go to BBs before the game, where he would meet up with Celtic supporters there.

So if anyones there at BBs, and you spot a guy with a Polish Flag or scarf wrapped round him, make him welcome.

Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,
Celtic, Celtic on to victory,
They're the finest team in Scotland, I'm sure you will agree,
We'll never give up till we've won the cup and the scottish football league
They come from bonnie Scotland, they come from county Cork,
They come from dear old Donegal and even from New York,
From every street in Glasgow they proudly make their way,
To a place called dear old paradise and this is what they say.
Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,
Celtic, Celtic on to victory,
They're the finest team in Scotland, I'm sure you will agree,
We'll never give up till we've won the cup and the scottish football league.
There's Fallon, Young and Gemmel who proudly wear the green,
There's Clark, McNeill and Kennedy the best there;s ever been,
Jim Johnstone, Murdoch, Chalmers, John Divers and John Hughes,
And sixty thousand Celtic fans who proudly shout the news.
Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,
Celtic, Celtic on to victory,
They're the finest team in Scotland, I'm sure you will agree,
We'll never give up till we've won the cup and the scottish football league.

Rihgt , I mean right - I’m a bit excited here – all we’ve got to do is win the game, (and then spend hours of complaining afterwards, because of this and tha). I’ll get myself something to eat after the game; I had to start on the grape juice to calm the noives.

It’s 2 -0 Celtic? Why not? But 1st we must score first and then see how we play against a more open minded opponent. In a “normal” game against the Fod we’re winners, which they know. That means they know they can’t compete with our talented players which explains their tactics. To defeat the Fod means to address their tactics. It’s up to you Gordan to get this one right.

This time we have to show them whets what.

BTW I'm so pashed / noives I posted this on the last thread, dear oh dear

Hail Hail, the Celts are here,
What the hell do we care,
What the hell do we care,
Hail Hail, the Celts are here,
What the hell do we care now...

For its a grand old team to play for,
For its a grand old team to see,
And if you know the history,
Its enough to make your heart go,
    Nine-in-a-row

We don't care what the animals say,
What the hell do we care,
    For we only know,
That there's gonna be a show,
And the Glasgow Celtic will be there.

Sure it's the best darn team in Scotland
and the players they are Grand,
    "We support the Celtic"
'cos they are the finest in the land.
We'll be there to give the bhoys a cheer
    When the League Flag flies,
And the cheers go up 'cos we know the Scottish Cup
is coming home to rest at Paradise
