How to beat Rangers, part three

Over the last seven or eight games we have watched Celtic try to prise open well marshalled defences with limited success. We often don’t look like scoring until chasing a goal in the dying minutes when poise gives way to irregular endeavour.

Every goal doesn’t need to be a beautiful creation. I remember more than once watching Henrik Larsson play a ball straight at an opponent’s legs at pace, knowing fine well that the defender was unlikely to control the ball.

Let’s reverse the proposition for a moment. If you were playing against Celtic and Bobo Balde was marking your striker, would you throw a high ball forward or would you play it straight to Bobo’s feet? I bet you would not play it high.

The low percentage play has its place, maybe not against Barcelona in the Champions League, but certainly in the SPL.

When moving forward, if Celtic vary from the high ball only to look for McGeady or Nakamura, which is a high percentage ball, they only transfer responsibility to create an opening to an increasingly predictable play.

The 50/50 wide ball into space, even the 30/70 ball onto the 18 yard box at Celtic Park, if you have your opponents rattled (remember Novo’s goal at Ibrox in October), will create more genuine opportunities than safe football.

Celtic need to wake from their high-possession stupor and get in touch with the adrenaline-fuelled way they tend to end games right from the start tomorrow.

Rangers have a very effective system of defending against predictable football, we need to find out how they cope with guerilla football.

BTW, the one thing that we have never shown the huns recently is that we can mix it with the best of them. Tomorrow will require players who know how to fight like-for-like. At present, the only players who know how to do this are BR & PH. With one of those two probably missing tomorrow, we are weaker. Bobo also understands but he will be omitted tomorrow so let's not dwell on that one !

Last Sunday's 10 plus ES is all I can forsee. Have those 10 (11 ?) got what it takes ?

There is no hoodoo for Wattie ( a name like that is no badge of respect BTW) over Gordon at CP.

We've got just the one scrappy game with the Ehiogu overhead sclaff to go on. Davie Weir tries that kind of nonsense and it's goodbye to his hernia. Carlos Cuellar tries it and he'll bite his erse with his teeth braces.

Looking forward to seeing whether the home crowd can learn something from last week's support effort at Fir Park.

I fancy 2:0 with Bazza missing their penalty.

The one place that is where we can hurt the huns is wide in the full back areas.

Their full backs help the central defenders pretty well and tuck in a lot keeping it narrow and having a packed box.

The best way to get at them is natural width then getting to the byeline with it and crossing back on them and making their solid back line have to think.

McGeady wide right and Robson wide left is the best option for me.

Otherwise McGeady and Naka are cutting into a five man midfield are right where their four man defence wants us to go.

Stretch the back four is the key. Has to be wide and I cannot believe Strachan hasn't noticed it yet.

There also has to be more hunger and movement than recent games as every pass has been a 50 yarder recently as no-one has the desire to come short to offer the easy ball even if it is just to make space for the longer ball.

Our strikers need to make the run for the balls we don't expect. They need to imagine the defender is going to miss it and go for it. If they do this they will make themselves look stupid for 90% of the game. (And score for the other 10% so well worth doing).

However the key will be the defence. Strachan has pointed out that the defence has been playing bad because they have limited the opposition to 1.2 chances per game.

I totally disagree with him and I think his stats show the defence to be poor. The reason that chances per game is low is because of the already mentioned Strachan stat in that we have been having loads of possesion and therefore by default the opposition has less possesion and therefore less chances at goal.

What is worrying for me is that any limited chances they do get are put away as they are not difficult chances. No 50 yarders or top drawer goals we are conceding. No we are conceding quite basic simple goals to teams whom it might be their only chance of the game.

This to me speaks absolute volumes that in fact the defensive stats are poor and backs up my observation that the players in those position are indeed poor.

The fact Strachan says that the defence have been doing well and he has told them that really really worries me. (I accept the possibility he is just trying to talk up his players but I don't believe that is the case).

Speaking to someone today they said to me that I had a short memory if I thought Balde was our best defender. Did I not remember the UEFA Cup final? etc.

Yeah Bobo let us down in the UEFA Cup final.

Caldwell and McManus will never let us down in a UEFA Cup final.

Because if we continue to play Caldwell and McManus we will never ever be in a UEFA Cup final for them to let us down in.

Anyone enough of this negative rubbish I started positive (I think!!) and McGeady on the right is the answer and go and get him through the middle as well to show Cuellar who is the real Player of the Year.

Go on wee man rip him to shreads tomorrow night and show them up for what they are.

not one man on here has given me a team whom I could ever be confident with. But, whomever we choose, with the support proprly behind them, who can beat us?
Not the best in europe, so whats to fear if we support our team, really. Our biggest problem at celtic park is the fear of looseing.
I thought todays response from celtic park on the bead thing was very timid and I think I know why, they responded but stopped short of calling it outright bigoty, again, why? are they trying to teach us to loose.
Support pressure made the celtic plc react, not any sense of outrage at the sectarian crime. We have requested an explanation from the SH, if that is an public apology, all's well and good eh? If there is no apology but a condescending retort, do we think the plc will fight?
    IMO not likely chum,

Zbyszek - Really exceptional post on the last thread. Who said you can't shine a pooh?

Tactics will be interesting tomorrow. There was a marked difference in our approach at M'Well at the weekend - much more direct play, plenty high balls into the box at the earliest opportunity, full-backs and Mick getting further up the park.

Rangers will sit back and try and hit us on the break. They have two games to take 1 point of us and win the league. We are up against it but it is time for the Bhoys who are given the honour of pulling on the hoops to prove they are worthy.

I am stuck in San Francisco on business and can't get to see the game. Considering going into a media blackout until Thursday after work when I can watch the game on the big telly for a change.

Good luck to Gordon and the Bhoys.

The day of reckoning has arrived. Lets hope WGS has the cajones to make the change.

Everyone knows how that mob will line up tonight, with 5 accross the middle and Darchville/Cousins up front, so play 3 at the back and push Hinkel into the midfield.
Aiden on the right, Naka on the left. Get in behind their defence and play the very effective cut back, a ploy which we hardly ever use now.

    COME ON YE CELTS!!

I am going to the game tonight in the expectation of seeing a Celtic victory. A win tonight will start to put some pressure on the bad guys but pressure is only effective if it is maintained. I therefore hope that Celtic retain the initiative by publicly asking the question tomorrow of when Rangers will be expected to play their remaining games. This issue should already have been addressed with some vigour but we are where we are. Answers should be pressed for now as to leave it any longer will allow the situation to drift into a scenario where an extension becomes inevitable. The fact that this situation is partly the responsibility of Rangers should not be allowed to go unremarked. Apart from the posponement of the Gretna game to allow for preparation for a European game there are also the two midweeks in the weeks commencing 4 February and 24 March which were allowed to pass without any effort to catch up on fixtures. The fixture schedule put forward by Paul a couple of days ago is feasible but you can already hear the Darryl Broadfoots bellowing about the good of the Scotttish game should Rangers be compelled to play 2 days before they take on Fiorentina, albeit at home. An alternative, one within the Scottish game, would be for Rangers to play Hibs(A) on 3 May, Motherwell(H) on 6 May, Motherwell (A) on 8 May and Dundee Utd(H) on 11 May. Four games in eight days. Tough yes but certainly possible and not much more than others have had to face in years gone by. Lets keep the pressure on and not let this go by default.

Sorry if this has been posted before but I was so shocked it has taken me three days to recover...

When reading my sunday paper of choice I came across this stunning statement

"In fact I support any team that Gordon Strachan manages. I think he does brilliantly with so little financial backing." Who has made this scandalous statement? Tim Booth front man of James. The man who penned the second greatest student anthem of the late 1980's. (I only allow one from each band therefore only one REM track comes first).

At least Gordon will know that he has the unequivocal support of one true "Tim".

For all those calling on us to change from a predictable 4:4:2, why do you go on to comment on the inevitability of Wattie's 4:5:1 without using the same description of predictable?

It's not the system; it's the quality of the play which will triumph. A system never won anything. We keep citing that 4:3:3 found out MON's 3:5:2 but only when Porto beat us 3:0 and when Big Eck had the flyer Lovenkrands.

3:5:2 has not lasted. The vast majority of modern systems depend on 4 at the back. Where's this leading? To the same place as steelica.

No matter what team is announced. No matter what system is played. No matter who is on the bench, my job tonight is to support the team for 90 minutes plus. I will not groan at misplaced passes; I will not shout bile at our manager and our favourite scapegoats; I will not volubly disagree with the substitutions made because all I can do to improve our chances of winning tonight are to support the team throughout.

There'll be a long cold summer to indulge in recriminations if we fail in the next 6 matches. There's no need to do anything but roar support until 9.35 pm or so tonight.

BTW- the above only applies to those going. Those of you in the pub or on this blog cannot influence the game so those restrictions need not apply.

Unless you think your positive support can be transmitted psychically? Might not be a bad theory to pursue just for your own mental health and that of those round you.

    Catch youse later.

BTW when would you want your son to play for rangers against Celtic.

The amswer is when he is six years old and trying to work out how to play FIFA08 on his playstation. It's far to complicated and he (and I) keeps getting hammered. So when he said he wanted to be Celtic against Rangers I rather harshly said no you can be Rangers against Celtic. 12-0 the hoops won.

he Football Association (FA) has launched a court case to stop UK residents watching Premiership football games broadcast by foreign TV stations.

The FA is seeking damages and a High Court order against two firms accused of supplying cards that decode TV signals from Greece and North Africa.

The two firms, QC Leisure and AV Station, say their sales are legal under European law.

But the FA said their actions were a "good old-fashioned rip-off."

James Mellor QC, who represents the FA, said the companies were illegally infringing the FA's copyright.

"It is about dealers making a fat profit. All they do is get hold of a foreign card and apply a substantial mark up of up to 100%," he said.

"How do they get hold of these cards? They get them through deception," he added.

    Pubs

Mr Mellor told the court that pubs in the UK were obliged to pay a commercial subscription to Sky TV if they wanted to show live football matches to their customers.

Breaching this obligation was a breach of contract and a criminal offence, he argued.

He said that more than 180 pubs had already been prosecuted for using domestic Sky cards on their premises.

And he argued that using a domestic card from a foreign country was equally illegal.

He said the cards in question were not meant to be used outside their home countries and had been obtained by the defendants using false names and addresses in Greece and North Africa.

The two companies will argue that EU law lets goods move freely throughout the European Union and that if they are available they can be sold anywhere in the EU.

Today's Racing post predicts a right side of JVOH, Naka and Massimo. For me, that's all our 60-40 tackles lost and that is what will affect the outcome. Of course the RP is not always on the ball with team line ups but if that is our right hand side in this most important of games, I can forsee real problems if we don't get the first goal. Whatever team is picked will get my support-that goes without saying-but I hope Hartley is fit. Donati and other less physical players are ok to bring on if we have a lead. Time for divine inspiration from Gordon. It's not too much to ask is it, get intae them and play them off the park as well. It would be great to see how they cope with a first defeat since Smith came back. I don't think they would cope. The league could still be ours. God save Celtic cried the heroes.

Sorry for the people losing their jobs in JJB. Makes the Rangers merchandising deal look like a truly inspired piece of business.

I know there are a lot of people in business who use this blog - can anyone tell me what would happen if the company went into liquidation?

Is it possible that a creditors' wrangle would then see all Rangers merchandise being taken off the market?

Maybe some Celtic-minded individual will take over the company and radically review their product range!

    ;)

Big Joe - I completely agree about the jobs.

It's a pity that Rangers had less sympathy for those made redundant as a result of closing down their official stores.

    Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo :

I think SKY will open a can of worms if they win this one. A ruling that could come back to bite them on the derriere.

The number of ex-pats or holiday home owners across the EU with a SKY card allowing them to watch the EPL in their house must be greater than a million. Spain/France/Portugal alone must be near that?

Many get their cards through reseller, who charge 2-3 times the price for the initial setup and card. SKY has turned a blind eye to them for a decade.

In most, if not all EU countries, you can now watch the EPL via a local provider. In most cases this is either SKY or CANAL Plus. Maybe they are trying to tighten their local stranglehold?

If SKY win, I'll bet that someone will ask the ruling to be enforced EU wide. If this came to pass, the amount of lost revenue for SKY would be in the 10's of millions.
Getting an illegal card on the black market would then cost X times more than it does currently......

This is a big game tonight; the most important we have played in what has been so far an ill-favoured season- bigger than Spartak, bigger than ACM.

We need to be at our very best- the players, the managers, and the support. A draw suits them; they have had an irritating habit of getting the away result they want all season.

We need to score first- the 5th or the 85 th does not matter, we need to get our noses in front.

They will try and frustrate us, to test the fragility of the bond between the home support and GS. If things don't go to plan then the Thrawn Sandwich Brigade must keep their frustration buttoned and get behind our team.

Time to stand up for the Champions

Time for the Champions to stand up

We have them in our sights and will hunt them down like dogs.

JJB would be bad news allround if it went into liquidation.

Bad for those losing their jobs but also Ran666ers would be free to negotiate a new deal for selling their merchandise. Rangers could be quids in if JJB paid up front on the agreement with Ran666ers.

Let's hope they stay in business for as long as the agreement with TFOD lasts.

Just shows you though if you dine with the devil..........

Need help guys. Usually before a Celtic v hughey game (no offence to anyone called hughey - as I mean hughey as in pukey) I read every single word of every single newspaper I can get my hands on. Today for the first time since my self imposed red tops ban and now having added the Herald to this list I am feeling a bit lost for gossip and news even though I know half of it is made up rubbish. What papers do you think I could buy to give me my hit and at the same time would not break my ban on reading unfair biased Rankers propaganda? There must be one? Somewhere?

Anyway 3-1 the hoops no matter who plays. Gordon Strachan and the players will once again have my full backing while I am in the confines of Pradise.

If JJB goes bust does that mean that Rankers automatically get their family silverware back by default?

    Agree wholeheartedly Paul.

Repeat again and again and again. Tonight is about winning. Only winning. Displaying courage. The courage to shoot from outside the area. The breath sapping lung bursting courage to deliver balls low and fast from wide and the courage for forwards to move at pace and with courage to connect with head foot elbow shinpad. Who cares. They don't like it up them! Of that I'm sure. Lets give them plenty to think about and remember this is not a CL match but by heavens it needs a CL atmosphere and performance.

I don't know if this has been posted yet:

    Celtic football club statement
    Newsroom Staff

HAVING been inundated with complaints in relation to an article in the Sunday Herald last weekend, Celtic Football Club has today written to the Editor of the newspaper looking for his comments on the matter.

The complaints have been in response to an article containing the line, “some fans would probably rather have a bead-rattling Hoopy the Huddle Hound in the dug-out.”

As a club open to all since its formation in 1888, regardless of race or religion, this disparaging characterisation of Celtic supporters is extremely disappointing and offensive.

The reference is completely inappropriate, and one which has naturally caused great concern amongst our supporters.

Clearly, with the level of feeling among our supporters being so high with regards to this issue, the club felt it important to address this issue with the newspaper concerned.

thanks but i always liked the actual newspaper in front of me as I could draw horns and porno tash's on the rankers players while I read. Don't think my lappy screen could handle an inky.

Nakasleftpeg, I do get the celtic view but it is hardly impartial. Only nice wee happy Celtic stories make it their. I suppose that is the Ying for the Yang of the impartial medja in this huntry.

Looks like I'm stuck with CQN, newsnow, etims and keep the faith.

Arrrgggghhhhh. I need something to draw on. Maybe Gordon Strachan and Pendie's wee board. I'll phone them and ask if I can borrow them. Bet Samaras would be happy with that as he would not then need to watch on as Pendry draws fancy wee diagrams for five minutes explaining what he has to do just before he comes on. He's a striker and he knows already just let him on.

Just been on the Celtic home page and clicked the sponsors tab. Bottom of the list is, guess who? Yes you got it, or maybe you didn't. The Herald, Evening Times & Sunday Herald. Time to get rid I think. We do not need their cash.

The only negative story being peddled is that of Samaras being unhappy on the bench. Is this a sign of things to come?

I am a bit concerned by those who are suggesting that we should try to out=muscle Rangers tonight. The simple fact is that we would not be ALLOWED to do so.
We did NOT set out to rough them up in October, yet we ended up with 9 bookings.
I can just about imagine the amount of judicial retribution we would suffer if we actually got tough.
Sadly the dice are loaded, & we had better hope that it does NOT develop into a Donnybrook.
I have no doubt that we have enough quality to beat this limited Rangers side using skill, pace & commitment.
