How to beat Rangers, part two

Rangers will be happy to sit deep at Celtic Park. They need to be drawn out and sending long balls forward to Vennegoor of Hesselink will not do this.

Celtic need to move the ball from back to middle to front and back again if necessary without losing composure. Passing is the only way to draw a team out and if Celtic passes find their man, Rangers players will be chasing shadows.

The direct long ball game has its place in football, but if Celtic revert to it too frequently, the game will be going to plan for Rangers.

Celtic must hold and pass the ball.

Percentage football has it`s place if used sparingly, it gives the opposition the chance to make an error. Look at the first goal Rangers scored in Lisbon.
Anyway I think we all believe that Celtic will have more of the ball and some extra luck would be welcome too.

    Paul,

    It hath ever been thus.

Celtic play football and we will BEAT them. We have always been the better football team.
the only time this did not really happen was under Watties previous reign as manager, but the difference was that then much as it pains me to say it rangers did have some very good footballers in their team, e.g. laudrup and gascoigne. This rangers team, ferguson apart, does not!

Keep the ball on the deck combined with fast, slick passing and movement and the game is there for the taking!

    C'MON THE HOOPS!

    AbMucker (from the last thread)

Sorry but both full backs pushing on doesn't cut the mustard and the last five games against them prove it.

Neither does it qualify as the required change of dynamic, its same old same old. Hinkel did a lot better at Ibrox pushing on and Naylor didn't get forward either delibrately or not, but against Motherwell at Celtic Park he switched them and Naylor's poor delivery let us down.

For the full backs 'pushing up' with a 4 4 2 you have to have better players.

Paul 67, maybe you could shed some light on my query as to why the season awards are decided several weeks before the end of the season?

would it not be more apropriate for them to be decided after all games have been concluded?

On the official club statement, glad to see our club making a stand on the issue, well done to all concerned.

WGS should tell the players before they go out that any player booked for talking back or moaning to the ref will get fined 2 weeks wages, if any player is going to be booked make sure it hurts rangers and puts them off their game plan........right into wee bawwy sore leg.

Also, tell them to stop being so honest, if your fouled in the box or just outside it, go down like a sack of tatties.

    Come on the hoops.

Thanks for the link Dick, it's good to see the Club taking into consideration the views of the fans on this and tackling this head-on and not being overlooked or swept under the carpet.

Also, by bringing this out in the open on it's offical website it's a shot across the bows of any other newspaper who might feel they can get away with this kind of garbage.

On tomorrow, I really hope Hartley is fit for tomorrow. The options for replacing him are not entirely encouraging though if he was out I would be looking for Sno to come in for him. As Paul said in his previous article, keep the centre-mids relatively deep to provide the defence for cover and second balls. I would rather see Sno carry out this job than any other replacement.

Playing the same team as Sunday will read 4-4-2 on paper, but the reality is at times in the game,it will read 2-6-2 or 2-5-3. I believe Hinkel & Naylor are good enough to overlap against them to get the deliveries our front men will need. Go on the HOOPS....

  • At 15/04/08 17:35, Blogger TerryO'Neill said…

Dick, good to see a quick response from Celtic.

    Paul agree with your assessment.
In the last game at Ibrox in the first half we looked to upset their pattern with Samaras coming short to receive the ball and then turning.

Losing a goal on the stroke of half time meant all composure went and we reverted to the meat and drink(for Cuellar and Weir) high ball delivered from a diagonal 35 yrds from goal.Old fashioned and non effective and totally soul destoying football.

It has to be on the deck Dundee Utd's performances were all noticeable for this.

We have to play balls in to the forwards feet,a high percentage of these passes fail but its the way to play and will lead to one maybe two freee kicks in dangerous areas.

It takes courage to play this football as fans become frustrated if moves break down.

I believe that we will win if we play fast on the deck football.

Going back to last night Bhoydell sorry i didnt react to your post,ma missus wis greetin the face aff mae so ma posts were of the in and oot kind.

Agree with you that Donati is insipid at times and dwells on the ball and has looked less than up for it.I also feel that there has been signs in his game that hes added commmitment and i still maintain he spreads the play well and sees a pass(Aberdeen last minute ball out to Samaras)better than Hartely.

I think Hartely is too slow but he reads the game reasonably well and is committed.

Get the ball to Aiden and Naka and we'll win.

Paul Hartley reads the game better than most and will be sorely missed if he doesn't make it and I fear for our chances in that scenario. It is ironic that it seemed that we were forever signing midfield players but, looking at it now, if PH is unfit, we have a bit of a problem.

I don't think we will be able to draw Rangers out tomorrow. they will sit deep and just watch Celtic pass the ball about midfield, they will not chase it.
I feel our only chance may be a long shoot that takes a deflection into the net.

On the question of Kenny Clark as referee let us consider that he is the referee who failed to give the Lennon penalty at Ibrox who failed to give a yellow card to Whittaker for pulling back an Aberdeen forward at Ibrox and who failed to take any action when Barry Ferguso grabbed Chris Mc Guire around the neck at Pittodrie. He also failed to give a penalty to Dundee Utd in the League Cup Final when Cuellar arm wrestled the Utd player to the deck. Still we live in hope - but not a lot of it!

Just checked the fixtures for the rest of the season and noticed that we have Hibs at home on Sunday 11th May (on Setanta) 12.30 kick off.

But, the Huns have Dundee Utd at Mordor the day before with a 12.30 kick off, also on Setanta.

Why do we always get the Sunday games especially against the Huns? When we go to Mordor it's always a Saturday. This must be extremely awkward for far flung supporters.

And, guess who goes on holiday on 11 May?

If we can't have 3pm on a Saturday at least make the televised game 12.30 on a Saturday.

debyshire bhoy - this guy Clark mystifies me also.

After the failure to award the lennon penalty at ibrox. He should have been demoted as happens in Engerland. After making such a error (or was it) which could have been pivotal in last season title race he was reward by been given last seasons flagship game (sfa cup final).
Again high profile error (or was it) in the recent league cup final which certainly was pivotal in the outcome of a major game. He is given the next biggest game (2moro's).

From memory i also believe KC to hav been the ref. when big Dunc. glasgow kissed the raith player several years ago. Failed to book him when criminal charges were later brought against Dunc. for this incident.

    Disappointed.

How many times do we complain of negative press, especially in the run up to a Rankers Game.

Clicked on the Etims site, and if Gaudds article was supposed to help inspire readers prior to tomorrows game, well we should maybe start reading the DR again also.

Don't know if he / She posts here under a different guise but they do mention CQN so.....

An attack on our Manager for enjoying a victory just prior to this game is no help to anyone. An attack on our manager for not living up to his (And I'm sure a sizeable amount of others)expectations of 'Total Football' while rebuilding squads and all within a budget helps no one.

I never ask anyone to not voice an opinion and I know from readng Gaudds previous articles (Which have mostly been enjoyable reads) that he / she wouldn't listen to me anyway.

I understand the need to voice an opinion and it's a requirement as a support.

But please, not prior to a game we need to win, save it til the end of the season if you really must blow off some steam!!!

He is our manager whether you're such a visionary that you thought he'd mess it up 3 years ago, or you're coming to that conclusion now. No need to rain on the optimism being shown by some (I think we are now being refered to as delusional...does that have it's own clique?) and show support instead of disent until the possible becomes impossible or we win this league.

Sorry for the length, and I don't want to pick a fight with one of Celtic Cyberspaces wordsmiths, but I'm merely making an plea for the real Celtic support to step forward tomorrow night!

    Bring them on!!!

    Paul,

totally agree that the long ball isnt the way to go but our poor passing has probably the weakest part of our game all season.

We resort to the long ball not out of choice but out of perceived necessity and lack of confidence because our passing doesnt work -- the second half at Ibrox was a perfect example. The goal just before half time shot our nerves and the players lost confidence in the way wed played in the first half which I thought was fine.

PENETRATION more than anything else is what we've lacked against them this year and although nothing came of it SB's direct running in the first half at Ibrox looked the most likely source of a goal.

Aiden is critical tomorrow and if hes forced inside then Naylor (or if hes switched to the right Hinkel) MUST be encouraged to make runs outside him either to give him an out ball and us,hopefully, a crossing option (How I wish Naylor could deliver even just two decent crosses a game -- look at Barcelona and how much damage a good cross can do)or to force a Rangers player to cover him at give Aiden a bit more space.

Our failure to support Aiden when he has two or even three players around him has been really damaging of late and thers no way Smith will have missed that.

I'm certain Robson will play and if we can get the ball to Aiden quickly and get him moving at pace then Robsons support from midfield could be key.

It was indeed KC. Even worse, the TV pics showed Clark watching the incident and turning away.

Ironically, it was was because no action was taken that the Fiscal decided to act, deeming Dunc to be in breach of the terms of his suspended sentence. Had Clark shown him a card, it was widely thought that Dunc would have got away with it.

So you could say that KC's decision actually resulted in a prison term, which could be a world first in football - but I certainly found very funny.

    Prediction: Celtic 11 - 0 Rangers

Just a thought in the midst of all the pre-tomorrow night tension.. I was at the game on Sunday and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The team were great, the crowd were great and the team/crowd link seemed pretty good to me too. To be honest, I've avoided papers and tv sports coverage for the last 2 or 3 weeks and in a way tried to disengage myself emotionally from the whole thing because it friggin hurts (didn't work..), but on Sunday I was reminded why I do have emotions invested in our great Club. On the way home, a friend said to me that it was as if there was a huge exclamation mark over the away crowd saying 'This is what it's about!'. Summed it up for me - what a reaction to last week's boos and chants. Hard times make you appreciate good times all the more. Has anything in recent memory surpassed the Wim season or the MON treble season, both of which followed times that were pretty hard to endure? Not that I'm giving up on this season yet I should add! But, whatever happens, isn't it great being a supporter of the Celts?

Football is played on a pitch which more or less is the same size across the country.
The stands may be different and the quality of surface may vary.
Why then is there an advantage to playing at home?

Without teaching grannies to suck eggs and because it's too early for a quiz I'll answer it myself.
It's because you have the support of the majority of those in the stadium.

The home support can give confidence to players when their own may be a little fragile.
The support from the stands can squeeze out a little bit more effort from our players and can cause inexperienced opponents to freeze.

We have 4 opportunities to prove this point. Lets not throw away the home advantage on our next 4 games at Celtic Park.
Everyone who knows what 3 in a row will mean through the coming summer knows what needs to be done.

Kojo :- Have you thought that maybe the fact your bookie friend gave such good odds was to attract lots of money in and that he didn't think he would have to pay any out? :-)

BTW If you don't mind me asking what odds would he give on Rangers winning, the local tote was at 15 to 8 or more important what would he give a draw, that's still the way I see it going.

The long wait is over your right a far more accurate portrayl.

Kenny Clark fails to award a penalty(Dundee Utd) that everybody in Hampden saw and his award for this failure is the Celtic game.

First goal is vital tomorrow night, we score it they need to come out and that doesn't suit them, they score game over, we hump high balls at Big Jan and they. Worried that the Hartley injury scare will be used by Strachan as an excuse to play Donati. Donati plays, we lose the midfield battle and with it the match. The one change from Sunday i would make is Samaras for VOH, play Skippy as the main striker to give their central defenders something to think about and let Samaras play off him where he can link up with Aiden and Naka.

Two little changes maybe ehough, get hinkle and naylor to cross from the byeline, no crossing from them unless they are on the byeline.
If hearlty plays, give him ten minutes each half to play his old game in attacking midfield.
    What do you think

Liked the Magoo and three monkeys pictures.Made me smile. Did NOT like McGrory`s ill timed view concerning the Manager.
Can`t people see something that to me is axiomatic: Strachan is right.Only once this season have the opposition created more chances than we have (3-0 THERE).Answer this:If we KNEW that both sides would convert their chances tomorrow, is there a single Celtic fan who would be other than supremely confident? Whenever we take our chances, we win. We ,usually, have not played any better and certainly have not TRIED any harder but the result blinds most to the reality that we have invariably been comfortably the better side. When we take our chances, many claim that everything was better, more cohesive, more effort, etc. Rubbish. If we take our chances ,we win.Remember that the next time you want to criticise Gordon Strachan.

Please, oh please Celtic, don't resort to punting the ball up the park. It is NOT JVOH's game and is meat and drink to them. Too many punts are basically aimless and are a consequence of lack of confidence, especially from our captain and our left back.

If Hartley isn't fit, then I think we have to play Donati. He can at least see a pass, which might well be vitsl, especially with the ref's track redord.

I'm glad to see that Celtic have responded to that awfullness that is the Sunday Herald. It has become every bit as bad as its stablemate. I now choose to not buy either. Can we not sue them for defamation or racialism or sectarianism or anything else?

Come on Celtic, team and support. We all have to give our all tomorrow night..

    WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

play the ball on the deck and pass it around and we can beat that mob.

I can see Rangers adopting the rope-a-dope tactic tomorrow. We will bombard them initially, even play them off the park. They will defend and absorb the pressure for a long time. Then, just as we think we must score, a long ball up the field, Darcheville, Cousin or Nacho Ned latches onto it...bingo! one nil the fod!

On the other hand....0-0 at 85 mins. JVOH comes off. Supersub Koki comes on..mesmerises Cuellar and Weir etc, then.....wham!! back of the net! instant hero!

Anyhoo, d'you know what is really p*****g me off greatly on here of late ? I am sick to the back teeth of reading on here, "Wattie this, Walter that" !!! How utterly sickening it is to see his first name being used more often than our own manager's ???? Hunbelievable. He's Smith FFS !!!

Anyway, still playing catch-up. If PH is out for tomorrow then I feel that this is a blow for us as without his dig / commitment in mf, I think we have no direct replacement available. If I had to choose, then it's the Sno-mhan for me. After all, if he's good enough for WG, then he's good enough for me :o)

    And just remember.......................!

Expect to be talking about the hun-in-the-black tomorrow more than the game. Irregardless of our poor performances of late, we were never, ever going to be allowed to win this league.....................FACT !!!

It’s my post with a title from Winnie the Pooh, author A. A. Milne.: A little Consideration, a little Thought for Others (Celtic), makes all the difference.

"It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?”

As you all know I’m a foreigner who don’t have an easy comfort to express his own opinion. Sometimes I need a dictionary to check the meanings of the words used in your posts. Some posts are very easy to understand, some are not. Things become more difficult when I try to say what I exactly want to say. These days, before OFD I understand everything very well. It’s all about the win against THEM.

"My spelling is Wobbly. It's good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places".

You never blame me (Zbyszek) here for being Wobbly-man. I’m WobblyWobly man. Not only letters get in the wrong places, but my words get in the wrong places too.
Gordon Strachan is Wobble manager this season in the SPL. He tried very hard to do his best, but this season is different. Right, he was Wobbly with a players, with a players positions and with the tactics.

P.S. Kojo, if you are around, you are Wobbly poster!

"Always watch where you are going. Otherwise, you may step on a piece of the Forest that was left out by mistake".

I don’t blame Strachan. He achieved a lot ,I think. You cannot blame somebody who went on the top and couldn’t defend his top position. All people in Celtic including Mr. Strachan and Mr. Lawwell should think about mistakes they made. No doubt, mistakes were made. They should start again their job from the place they are now. You always may have worse manager. The bright side is that clever people can do the analyze their mistakes. I’m sure next season Gordon Strachan will be much stronger and much better manager.

“I don’t see much sense in that,” said Rabbit. “No,” said Pooh humbly, “there isn’t. But there was going to be when I began it. It’s just that something happened to it along the way.”

When my Legia won the title two years ago I thought we will be champions until the end of the world.
I couldn’t belive it could be true what one of the experts said: “They won’t be the champions next season. It’s almost impossible to be the champion again, year after year, two in a row.”
Those who are disappointed with the current season, should check CQN archive. I remember what you were posting about. I remember your wishes. Wasn’t it Celtic playing in the Champions League? Yes, it was, but it was only a wish!

"If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together.. there is something you must always remember. you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. but the most important thing is, even if we're apart.. i'll always be with you.”

Some time ago I said that you have too many players who don’t know the club they are playing for. Celtic cannot be the bazaar.
When after the game against Barcelona I met Maciej, my friend from Poland he said: Celtic has few good players, but has more average players. Why the he** they pay such a big money for and to the average players? They have too many expensive, average players. I’m not the expert, but I think Maciej was right.
It’s always sense to stand behind the manager and the players until the end of the season. Even if these are the last days in Celtic for some people, I would support them until the end. They are Celtic players until they wear the hoops.

“If the person you are talking to doesn't appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.”

No matter if it was two thousand years ago, or maybe yesterday – people come to truth when they respect facts. It doesn’t matter who is right but where the truth lies. Truth will be known only in May. We will see who will be on the top.

“You can't help respecting anybody who can spell TUESDAY, even if he doesn't spell it right; but spelling isn't everything. There are days when spelling Tuesday simply doesn't count.”

No need to be a Celt, Irish or Catholic to be a Celtic FC supporter. I remember nice welcome I took from here about three years ago. I think, I was the only person who needed some time to think how to write TUESDAY word properly. I may forget how to spell TWESDY, I remember how to spell CHAMPIONS. I will spell it properly in my happy May post.

“You can't always sit in your corner of the forest and wait for people to come to you... you have to go to them sometimes.”

No doubt, the Celtic helps to understand what people think in the other place. It always helps to change the meanings and to become more intelligent fan.

“Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. "Pooh," he whispered.
    "Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw, "I just wanted to be sure of you."”

Things have changed in my club Legia. We have a conflict: fans against the owners. No chance to see big support at my stadium these days. I don’t want to say: you don’t shout enough loud, but I would like to hear huge noise from first until the last second of the game. No whistling fans, no empty seats. These eleven man want to be sure of you. No matter how the man starts, it matters how he finishes. I really believe the league is not finished. Keep winning, the rest will come. My fingers will be crossed.

"It's so much more friendly with two".

My Legia has no chance to be a champion this year, but I have another club I follow.

"People who don't Think probably don't have Brains; rather, they have gray fluff that's blown into their heads by mistake".

What means Think? Where it happens - THINKING?

As I said, my Legia is many points behind Wisla. Today we played cup game against Wisla in Krakow. Our couch thought we have no chance to go through. He decided to concentrate on the second place in the league. Our second, young squad played against Wisla … and won 1:0. We are still for a cup. Sensational result. Could I believe that three hours ago? I have fluff in my had. Fluff and bones.
I tell you, it’s easier to believe Celtic will be a champion.

"The more he looked inside the more Piglet wasn't there".

In May, Rangers will be looking for something which was close, but disappeared.

All quotations are from Winnie the Pooh.

    Nice fitba thread.

I am more concerned with not winning enough of the FIRST ball.

We have lost several goals due to that this season. Most recently the defeat to Aberdeen at home ,came about by not clearing our lines with a powerful first header clearance.

I think that we should play 4-5-1 against them.

We play better with Paul Hartley in a holding role.

    However,and it's big however.
In a four man midfield it is easier to press him.
When he has been pressed he has cost us several vital goals this season.
He gave the ball away in the last minute at tynecastle ,which lead to Gary Caldwell gifting the penalty. He lost possession against Hearts at Parkhead which lead to the first goal ,that knocked us out of the league cup.

He was also responsible for a giving away possession on Saturday which lead to the Motherwell goal.

I like him as a player ,he gives his all and he has a bit of compsure ,he just lacks stature and speed when pressed.

    I would bring back Bobo,(WGS won't)
play a five man midfield with Hartley holding.

Robson would play, and i would have big Jan up front on his own.

With tem miutes left and still in the game ,we can then pres for a winner with a more attacking formation if we need to.

Let's not hand it to them on a plate.

Forget rope-a-dope. I expect their physical game to come to the fore. But I think we'll take them this time. They don't think they can get beat but their approach will have to change if we get one - which we need to do. Samaras for me - although we have a few derby ducks needing altered (To the positive Mr McManus).

Expectation. That slow burn of anticipation.

Good to see what you had printed was part of the reason for clubs reaction to the SH article. It was an attack on the RC faith, and the fans of the club by infering that some fans are bigots who only want an RC as the manager. I have never heard of any fan asking for any employee of Celtic to be an RC.
Kojo I love you to bits but I for one am delighted to see the club didn't follow your advice and forget about it.

If we can get an early goal, we'll win pretty comfortably. I think even a one nil lead at half time would probably see us win.

Their game plan is screwed if the opposition scores first. Alas, not many teams have managed this which leaves them exposed to Watties rope-a-dope sucker punch.

I'll be honest and say I'm not especially looking forward to going along tomorrow night.

Listening to ten thousand gloating Huns will not be a rewarding experience, made all the worse by the fact I sit in section 114 i.e. one block away from the pond life.

It should be noted that Evander Sno was taken off at half-time in the reserve game this week, and not through injury.

If PH doesn't make it for the game tomorrow, that might be a good indication of who comes in.
