Nine points in a week, who can complain? Yesterday`s match was straight from last season`s tired run in.
Balde and Caddis proved their value and Samaras will be happy to score three times. :-)
On to the next match.

Bobby Darin is magical.
Have you heard Artificial Flowers?
If so, download the version by Kevin Spacey.
Who played Darin in the biopic.
Unbelievably, i think that his version is even better than the original.
I also couldn't stop listening to "The curtain falls" after Jinky died.I thought that it would make a great background track to one of the Jinky videos.

Forty Years Ago Today
From 'The Glory And The Dream' (Campbell/Woods)
" As Rangers struggled the momentum was switching to Celtic, who received a psychological boost from the Ibrox boardroom after the 'Old Firm' had been paired in the semi-final of the Glasgow Cup and Celtic, relatively free from other commitments, pressed for a date. Rangers were in an awkward position; although they still led in the league race by one point and were through to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup and the Fairs Cup, their recent form had been shaky. Perhaps another match might have jeopardised their chances, but they made one of the more publicly shameful decisions in their history; citing "a congestion of fixtures" - a feeble excuse - they withdrew from the tournament rather than face Celtic and risk a humiliating defeat. Nobody was fooled by the official reason, least of all the Rangers' supporters who had to undergo a merciless ribbing as they were taunted with accusations of cowardice. More demoralising than that was the fact that the ploy failed miserably: in the Scottish Cup Hearts beat them at Tynecastle in a replay; in the Fairs Cup Leeds United eliminated them at Elland Road amid violent scenes and, on the night that Celtic defeated Clyde 8-0 in the Glasgow Cup Final, Morton held them to a 3-3 draw in the league at Greenock.
Three days later [20 April 1968] the same Morton side gave Celtic a fright. Welcomed on to Celtic Park with murmurs of grateful appreciation by a large crowd, they held Celtic to a 1-1 tie with only 30 seconds left. Rangers, now level in points with Celtic, were leading 2-1 at Kilmarnock and news of that score was spreading round the terracings amid growing despair, when in the dying seconds Bobby Lennox scrambled in the winning goal. "

Johnstone, Lennox, Wallace, Gallagher, Lennox.

who was the numptie that had the photo of MON in McLeish's pocket some time ago? Was it one of Leckie's articles?
Think we should keep this in mind when the comparisons of WGS/Smith are made. Stay focussed on the bigger picture and don't let the media rubbish distract us.
Funny feeling that the mighty St J's might do something today. Dunno...feel it in the water. Or maybe thats the 5 gallons of Guiness from yesterday.

awalkacrosstherooftops - i haven't bought the paper today. I usually do, generally one of the few good reads available on a Sunday. Its very prominant on their online version. There were comments posted against the apology, but you cannot view. Shame...would be interesting to read the feedback of the readers.
My militant, zero tolerance stance this season to the most obvious bias I have ever seen in Scotlands media, has resulted in my withdrawal of customer status from this paper. There are a few others.
Anyone recommend a good read on a Sunday?

Sunday Herald Sport
An apology
IN AN article headlined Fans fail to show Celtic class with Strachan slating' for last week's Sunday Herald, Kenny Hodgart used the following sentence: "Some fans would probably rather have a bead-rattling Hoopy the Huddle Hound in the dug-out."
The use of the term "bead-rattling" is clearly unacceptable in a quality newspaper. Indeed, it is clearly unacceptable in any context and in any walk of life.
The Sunday Herald's stance on bigotry and sectarianism is clear: as a newspaper we have consistently and systematically challenged prejudice wherever we have found it. We have written dozens of articles - in the sports section, in the news section, in opinion and debate and in the magazine - condemning those who continue to perpetuate sectarianism and praising the considerable efforts of both Celtic FC and Rangers FC, among others, to stamp it out.
Religious bigotry continues, however, to be a blot on the landscape of Scottish football and also in wider society. There has been huge progress in recent years, but there is still more to be done before we can consider ourselves a truly united society.
Kenny Hodgart will no longer write a column for the Sunday Herald. I have also instigated an investigation to discover how this unacceptable terminology was able to get through our production system.
The Sunday Herald would like to take this opportunity to apologise unreservedly for any offence caused by the use of this phrase and assure our readers that we are treating this matter extremely seriously.

there were two comments on the article.. both asking for clarification as to his future of hodgart with the herald as he has a background in the arts..
as Bloke 109 posted earlier he feared that he might start doing reviews for them once the dust settles..
both comments were taken down pretty quickly and the article was set up without comment..

Re Pavlyuchenko
I think if we want to improve on what we have (without gambling on a £1-3m player coming good) with immediate effect this is the market to be shopping in.
If we were looking in JAn to spend £3m on a Left back from Marseille and a similar sum on Centre backs from Bayern and Real Madrid then i think £8m on a striker is not unrealistic... privided we can trim some of the fat from the squad.
Tell me, if we could sign Pavlyuchenko for £8m and say £30 k a week, whilst selling Venegoor for £2m, thus loosing his £20-25k a week from the books, who would not take it?

This morning, when I was watching Match Of The Day,Paul Jewell said his Supporters were terrific, worth an extra man.
On reflection,Celtic don't seem to have that luxury, yesterdays crowd, would be worth minus a man.
The atmosphere was about zero, the only good thing that happened yesterday was ,there was no boo-ing,we are needing to start supporting our team, and give us that extra man at every game, not just the elite games against better opposition.
Have we as supporters, been spoiled over the years, only cheering Champions league matches, and the hate matches, against the hunnish hoardes.
When Donati got the ball Yesterday,I could hear the sighs and groans coming from the crowd,Do you think he(donati)doesn't hear the same sighs and groans, possibly one of the reasons he's inclined to pass the ball on far to quickly, where it goes is anyones guess,it's as though the ball is to hot to handle, getting rid of it as quickly as he can,it's not condusive to good football.
Celtic didn't shine Yesterday, and after such a hard game on Wednesday,I wasn't expecting them to have good a game Yesterday, all I wanted was a win,and we achieved that, adding another three points to our total.
Bobo Balde had a good game Yesterday, and should really should have been playing more often, and he played good enough, not to be dropped for the game next Sunday, and he gets top marks from me.
Young Paul Caddis,if he had played the full game would have been my man of the match, and wasn't far behind big Bobo. It's not saying much for the rest of the team, when a young Bhoy who played just forty minutes outshines most of the others.
We're still very much in the hunt, there will be points dropped, hopefully not by us,but you can see the pressure building up for us,and it will be twice as bad for them, they are still in three competitions, and they will be lucky to win anything.
Celtic can't win the league,Rangers can only lose it,and we need the help of others,Us,Hibs, and Aberdeen at home, and Dundee utd away,I discount any of the others giving us a helping hand, they will lie down to Rangers.
Yes. we are still in the hunt,Looking forward to the next three weeks.
Tic Talk.
Nice to meet you in BBs Yesterday.
Narrowboat Tim.
I think you should keep your tips to yourself,I put twenty pounds on your certainty.
I only wish you had picked the winner.

Again from Campbell & Woods, an excerpt from 1996's 'Dreams And Songs To Sing ':
" Celtic also drew some comfort, and a fillip to morale, from Rangers' obvious rerluctance to honour the clubs' Glasgow Cup semi-final fixture.Perhaps fearing psychological damage to their title chances, they withdrew from the competition citing 'a congestion of fixtures' as a reason. Although Rangers were indeed still involved in Europe and the Scottish Cup, the widspread perception was that, in Glasgow parlance, 'Rangers had crapped it!' In the next issue of the Celtic Football Guide Jock Stein reiterated his contempt for Rangers' action by noting that Celtic had retained the Glasgow Cup by beating 'all the clubs eligible and prepared to play us'. Rangers' action misfired badly, since the Ibrox club soon had only the league title to play for - and, on the evening that Celtic were trouncing Clyde 8-0 in the Glasgow Cup final, Morton took a vital point from Rangers in a 3-3 draw at Greenock.
Only three days later (on 20 April 1968) however, that same Morton side almost derailed Celtic's hopes. In the closing minutes the score was still tied at 1-1 and, as the news was spreading around the ground that Rangers were leading 2-1 at Kilmarnock, despair was visible on 50,000 faces... until, in injury time, with referee J.W. Paterson of Bothwell looking at his watch, Bobby Lennox lunged at the ball in the goalmouth scramble to snatch the winner. Once again Lennox had produced a vital last-gasp goal for Celtic. Hugh Taylor of the Daily Record , in reviewing the season, would recall the scenes when Rangers fans were leaving Kilmarnock, jubilant in victory and in the mistaken belief that Celtic had dropped that vital point: 'The news spread like wildfire. There was pandemonium. Party songs were sung. The fans danced with each other.' "

I have just re-read, for about the sixth time, the excellent poem posted a few articles ago by Estadio.
It was called Shades of Alba.
I love it to bits.
Did Estadio ever enlighten us as to the origin of this wee gem ?
After reading another recent post by a grandson of the late Charlie McGinley ( SurveyorCelt2), I went rooting through old photo's & found a tattered image of what I take to be the long defunct Clydebank Hibs team with a cup that they were proudly displaying ( circa 1950 ).
Charlie is at the front of the picture looking very proud indeed.
There are another couple of the McGinley clan in the picture, who will also be your relatives.
Great memories.
Thanks.

This is not an anti-Gordon post but: Mr. Lerner, can we have our MO'N back PLEASE?! The sort of football Villa are now starting to show seems to be an indication of what he could have achieved with MONEY at Celtic and it almost hurts to see him finally able to realise his footballing vision at another club. Martin's last major purchase at Celtic Park was Hartson in 2001 - after that his only significant aquisitions were Varga (free, an inadequate Mjallby replacement), Bellamy and Camara. The last two were obvious attempts to inject the type of pace and direct running that Villa's attack now thrives on. (Long-ball merchant? Don't make me laugh.) Oh, for what might have been!
-
Winningemmell,
I was at that game right behind the goal at the old Celtic end when Lennox scored.
To add to the piquance the Darnel game had finished a bit earlier than ours by a few minutes and they were celebrating a title only to have their hopes dashed.
Rangers were undefeated in the league that year up to the last game of the season when they were beaten at home by Aberdeen.
Also bear in my mind we were reigning European champions which indicates what a good side the Darnel had at that time
-
St Johnstone V Rangers at Hampden has less atmosphere than a junior cup semi final. Chris Burke's season looks over after going over on his ankle at the same time as a Saints player left his foot in. Didn't look good.
-
Naismith has jut went off with a serious-looking injury as well, though he should never have tried to carry on after the first challenge he took on it. Two serious injuries so far for them within 20 minutes, is Rangers season unravelling in front of them?
1-1 with Hibs and Dundee United.

In any case, Main saved it from Novo this time, thankfully.

-
Extra time at hampden today would be lovely.
-
Good to hear about some crunching tackles from St Johnstone, who as the plucky wee team will be supported by our media.... aye right.
Good news days nevertheless. A Samaras goal gives us a win against Aberdeen , and lets face it any win in Scotland with what we have got to put up with should be enjoyed to the full. Then an apology from the Sunday Herald and a promise that said lazy journalist will not be featuring in future. Then Aston Villa trounce Mcleish's team 5-1 .
Sorry to hear about "Cup tie" Kano.
-
Good win for Villa today. Next week it's Everton away which is a crunch in the race for 5th.
Sounds like an interesting firsh half at hampden too. Are thing continuing to fall apart for the baddies with two more injuries? According to BBC, St Johnstone have had the only shot on target so far.

while i agree the 3 points was a huge relief yesterday given we will need rangers to lose and draw tiwce or lose twice AFTER we beat them i think goal difference has to be kept in mind. Given we suffered recently at the hands of goal difference
-
Apologies to all those who answered my queries on BBs the other night, unfortunately something came up that meant I couldn't make there or even the game itself. Radio commentary is bad enough at the best of times but when you should be there it's a nightmare.
3 points is all that matters at this stage. As predicted it was always ging to be hard to lift ourselves (both players and crowd) after Wednesday night.
I've watched the first half of the 'football' match at Hampden. They are a truly shocking bunch, not even going for it against a lower league side. I know it's maybe not the done thing, but it's good to see two more of their players out with what look like season-ending injuries. Their options are diminishing my the game.
Christian Dailly having a fine game. Is it just me or is he trying to perfect the Kevin Rowland look from his Dexys Midnight Runners days?

oh they were celebrating all right, they thought they had it in the bag. If I'm not fantasising I recall Tully57 (who is a lot older than me and knows a lot more about Rangers than me) telling me he'd read John Greig's autobio - The Captain's Part it might have been called (maybe even The Wilderness Years) and I'm sure Greig admits in those pages that they'd cracked open the bubbly in the bath..... or maybe just the bubble bath (did people have bubble bath back then ? I don't remember bubble bath in the 1960s).

What is the chances of the establishment club not minding a draw today to back up their case for an extention of the season.
Imagine,no criticism of a draw against a first division team(AGAIN),but only criticism of the SPL for not allowing them more time to complete a programme because of their inability to beat lower division opposition twice in the cup.
If an extention is given to them.
We should simply say we are pulling out of the league.
See what happens then.

Paul,
first visit in a while. I haven't been following the blog, but I do read your articles. Can't say I agree with this one.
I would say, in terms of the lexicon of CQN, that I would be termed a 'Happyclapper'. Some may have me pegged as a right Happyclapper....:)
Anyway, I was dismayed by yesterday's tepid display and casual approach to the game. Angered even. The players looked like they had no understanding of what was at stake. It was almost as if they hadn't expected Wednesday to happen and were trying to make up for it.
I don't buy the inevitability of the display, either, Paul. There were 4 new faces in the team. Many (most) of whom have been moaning about not getting a game. If that 4 had displayed half of the drive of Caddis, we'd have scooshed this game.
So, no, sorry I believe that much of what we have seen has been unforgivable. There are 2 must have's at our club. First, an understanding of the unique reality of playing for this club....ie, Saturday is not just another game of football. Second.....effort. Lots of it.
All the other failings in life, I can accept. Lack of skill. Silly mistakes, etc.
I was genuinely shocked that the team did not come out of the dressing room seriously pumped and totally focused.
Whew. Quite a wee rant there. Might be the first post I've made that TinyTim will agree with.....:)
Hope all is well with you and yours.

Waddell and the RST story in the Record have proved what I have long suspected - they have now concluded that the only way forward is to cater exclusively to Rangers.
