January Stocking fillers make all the difference for Celtic

I said some weeks ago that we would have to wait for suspensions to present us with the opportunity to field our most effective team and the performances of Barry Robson and Paul Hartley today bore this out.

In your mind, picture either player on the ball right now and I bet he has his head up looking for an opening. Both arrived at the club as late-January stocking-fillers for around the £1m mark, but they are experienced, intelligent players which is exactly what Celtic need right now. Exactly what we have needed since late-January.

Much better performance today, heart at the heart of the battle.

Not convinced that we have the players to win all of our remaining games but at least we now have the opportunuty to make them sweat a bit.

Please pick the right team Gordon and get them up for the battle.

can't believe the furore around Hartley on here

Is this the guy who gave away possesion for their goal today

OK other than that he played ok. Yes ok nothing spectacular and definitely not the hero he has been potrayed on here.

If we had been beat today then the goal he gave away would have been lambasted and shows another reason why football fans are fickle. Win - all is great and lose - all is terrible.

I am a happier man today despite the fact I don't think we have any chance for the league but my love of the hoops makes my heart rule my head.

I get more frustrated each week though with our Manager. Before the game he was asked the question if we worked harder in training given recent results and his answer was no everything is fine.

He said that the defence is doing a good job as the chances per game is limited. He also says at the same time that the possesion and passes in each game are in our favour (which would probably explain why the opposition have had few shots).

He says that nothing is wrong with the defence and he has told the defence to keep up the good work.

Are you having a laugh Mr S? The reason shots have been limited is because of the amount of possesion we have had (as you say) and not because of the great defence. You also say it is good (and unlucky) that we have only conceded 1.2 shots per game and some goals here and there.

I must take issue with this. I think it speaks volumes of our poor defence that very few chances are turned into goals and the reason is because the defending is so poor that when limited chances come along they are easy to take.

Ironically that is exactly the reason we are not scoring despite many chances. Every time we get a chance it is not clear cut. Because either a) the other team are defending well or b) our passing has created a half chance.

When our defence plays crap (aka Motherwell at home) and let us go 1 down then our chances become harder because when we get them our forwards have more forwards to compete with as the opposition then have 10 men behind the ball.

For Mr S to say that nothing needs working at at training and the fact that the defence are doing just sums up the fact that this man is extremely out his depth.

If Mr S wasn't at our club then today's 4-1 win would have been celebrated rounds the pubs and clubs as it would have been us achieving 3 in a row.

    Simple as that.

Mediocrity breeds acceptance to mediocrity and the fact that Hartley is being applauded today speaks volumes to the depths we have gone to.

I heard that comment too as I tuned in to see what the score was on my way back. I'm not sure Messi would have run the ball too far and ended up getting booked on the run the commentator was on about! I near crashed my car when I heard it! My wee bhoy asked me when Rangers had signed Messi, I just laughed. What could I say to that?

Great performance by the bhoys today. I thought Robson and Hartley were fantastic, great dig and composure when required. I take it Hartley got the Setanta MOM award with the cameraman following him and I would say it was richly deserved.

I thought the crowd played it's part today. I know the away support are usually a good bit more vociferous but we got right behind the team from the off. It was quite sparsely populated up the back of the South Stand but I couldn't make out why the stewards and Police got involved to my right for a while. Nothing really untoward being chanted/sung from what I could make out.

Looking forward with much more confidence to Wednesday night. Patch up the lads who started today and send them out to battle again against them on Wednesday.

Another thing I thought about today is the much maligned JVOH and Skippy partnership must now be close to having 50 goals between them which is a return I think we would all have thought decent at the start of the season, though I realise not so long ago we had a guy who could bag that on his own! Not many partnerships in Britain will have provided that return.

Today, I thought Barry Robson was our best player.

He must have had more crunching & legitimate tackles than any other player on the pitch today.

But, me being the paranoid/cheat checker, I could not believe the actions of the Motherwell players during the half-time break.

They had a major kick-in, in the goal that Artur would be defending, and the goalie looked as though he was digging a tunnel in Escape to Victory. What Was That About? Whereas The Celtic “Subs” were splaying balls across the pitch staying well clear of the’goalmouth’ at the other end. Gamesmanship? No, watch the groundsmen at every away game. They pay particular attention to the area their team will be defending.

Anywho, great result today, but, and I don’t mean this geographically, AYE A DO, but, can all the TEUCHTERS (anywhere East of Glasgow – espec. Lothians) please stop slagging every mis-placed pass. You, all sound so GAY :-)

    GET IT?

Well how do you think CELTIC PLAYERS feel when all THEY can hear is VITRIOL?

Apologies to all non teuchters, but, I seem to get stuck wae them every away game :-)

Having band myself from the Red Tabs I now find I may have to add my Sunday read to my list of banded media. At this rate I will be reading Roy of the Rovers for all my footy needs. Thank goodness for CQN.

As for the racist slur on Naka does anyone know of a good journalist in this country who can highlight this to UEFA big wigs as it is both Secterianism and racism that they are fighting against at this time or does that only apply to one side of our great devide.

Every week there is some new example of the depth to which their supporters will stoop. Their club does nothing to stop it and the media either laughs it off or ignores it completely. What does it take for some sanction to be applied?

"In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is King."

An old saying, granted, but valid as the day is long.

Nobody is saying Paul Hartley is a world beater. It's just that he is better than the alternatives we have been suffering of late.

He has had a raw time of it, being dropped after an outstanding performance at Pittodrie for Daonati, dropped after being one of our better performers at Ibrox for Donati and dropped after two excellent back to back performances against Soartak away and St Mirren - again for Donati.

Neither Donati nor Brown have shown any kind of consistency that has merited their continual inclusion. Scott Brown's suspension may be a blessing without the disguise.

Hartley and Robson done more today than the other two have done since January.

Hartley is no Kaka, but he's certainly no cack either.

bang on the money with your last comment.

paul hartley was at fault for the motherwell goal, thereafter he ran about a lot tidied up and by and large was as you say, average.

the problem is donati was struggling before him so an average game and suddenly, he is the great white hope.

i fear for wednesday because he has better players to contend with, at ibrox he was average and partially at fault for the rangers goal, with 20 minutes to go he was blowing like a dolphin.

sadly the euphoria is misplaced and it does smack of clutching at straws. as for his setanta man of the match scott booth picked him, very early in the first half before he had kicked a ball if you listen to his comments.

dearly hoping he does well on wednesday because he is now automatically selected, but average won't do.

agree Hartley was ok today and better than any recent central midfield performances but still nothing special

In normal circumstances it would be worthy of mention that it was improvement.

However comments today have went above a worthy mention (which is not merited) and also the fact he helped to give away a lead (something that could have lead to worse) means that no heroship today for Paul from me.

If we had a decent manager then today's 4-1 win would be irrelevant as the league would already be won.

"Scott Brown's suspension may be a blessing without the disguise"

How true, how very true. He has been in the team whenever available and he is probably the biggest disappointment this season. How many games is he out for ? Hartley and Robson have the up and at'em attitude without the "face-offs" that Brown delights in.

Don't get me wrong, I think that Brown has much to offer. We need a coach who knows where and how he should play before he will shine. But we've done that discussion for now.

Rangers at bottom of hygiene league

who would eat here 5 star my ass

SIR Sean Connery is among a host of celebrities who have enjoyed VIP hospitality over the years at the home of Glasgow Rangers.
But 007, not to mention thousands of paying fans, would doubtless be more than a little shaken and stirred to learn that the club was shown the yellow card by food hygiene officials.

Scotland on Sunday can reveal that public health inspectors found beetles and flies in kitchens at Ibrox Stadium.

The discovery of insects in cooking and food storage areas was one of a catalogue of hygiene breaches unearthed in an inspection, which took place 18 months ago but has only now been made public.

Rangers said last night they had fixed the problem completely within three weeks of the report.

One kitchen, which was infested with sewage flies, was adjacent to the club's prestigious Thornton Suite, which hosts champagne receptions and five-course meals.

Well-heeled VIP fans spend up to £5,460 a season to reserve a table in the executive hospitality area next to the manager's office.

Rotting food and a bucket of stagnant water were also discovered in meal preparation areas. The inspectors reported:

    • Dermestes beetles in a Members' Lounge kitchen store;

    • Filter flies in both the Thornton Suite and Argyle Suite kitchens;

    • "Putrefying food matter" in the Members' Lounge kitchen store;

    • A bucket of dirty water in the Members' Lounge kitchen;

    • Condensation from the ceiling dripping onto food in the walk-in freezer in the main kitchen;

    • Defective dishwashers, filthy ventilation grilles and grease filters, out-of-date marmalade, loose ceiling panels, uncovered ice cream, sugar and flour being stored, broken plasterwork and flaking paint in the chairman's kitchen.

The report also ordered the club to remove a disused and obsolete fish fridge from the main kitchen, to subject other food preparation areas to a "deep clean before use" and to repair missing grouting from kitchen floor tiles.

It also demanded that the populations of flies and beetles be eradicated and states: "It is recommended that access to the kitchens be limited to food handlers only."

The results of the inspection have been put into the public domain by the Environmental Protection Services department of Glasgow City Council.

Corporate hospitality is a huge money-spinner for the SPL leaders.

Rangers operates a host of restaurants, bars, lounges and executive boxes in the stadium, with prices ranging from £90 for a match-day table in the Symon Lounge to more than £5,400 for a season-long package at the plush Thornton Suite and Club Deck Boxes.

The club's portfolio describes its hospitality facilities as "unbeatable". It states: "Ibrox hospitality is about more than just watching football in style. Visits from Rangers legends and current first-team players are part of the experience, plus tours of the famous Trophy Room."

The blue-carpeted Thornton Suite, where flies were found in the kitchen, is billed as the ultimate in match-day luxury. "The Suite symbolises the heritage that has made Rangers one of the most celebrated clubs in the world. Surrounded by some of Ibrox's most famous rooms, guests experience first-hand the unique atmosphere.

"Guests enter via the main door, exclusive to VIPs and players, and proceed via the marble staircase to a champagne reception before enjoying a five-course meal in luxurious surroundings."

The club boasts that the Members' Lounge, where beetles and rotting food were found in the kitchen and in a store, "will make an impression on any guest".

Sir Sean, perhaps the best-known Rangers fan and a close friend of club chairman David Murray, has received VIP hospitality at Ibrox on several occasions. Comedian Andy Cameron and current Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist have hosted match-day receptions for fans at the stadium.

According to one council pest control expert, Dermestes, or larder, beetles – which are black or brown and can grow to a third of an inch long and live for a year – cause considerable problems in kitchens.

He said: "They feed on almost any material that is rich in protein and attack meats, cheese, fish and dried foods."

    Tonybhoy,

Your last comment - agree, but we don't and it isn't.

The frustration with Gordon is his reluctance to drop off form players. And his eagerness to drop in-form players for his favourite off-form players. If you follow.

So, when a player who has been unfairly punted returns and shows up the previous incumbants as being not fit for purpose (copyrite enfringement?) it's only natural that he is lauded.

He deserves it in my view, and will demonstrate it if kept in the team for the rest of the season.

Irrespective of whether or not we win the next two games, and irrespective of how well or otherwise he plays, anyone willing to bet Hartley will be dropped for Brown after the suspension is up?

C'mon the Celtic, get the pressure hose right on them on Wednesday!!!

I was never a fan of Barry Robson, but, today he was good (ok very good) but, I also thought on that scandalous pitch Naka, occasionally played some measured passes, especially when under pressure defensively.

But, would big Jan have scored two if he hadn't been scandalously booked?

I would not say any performance today was outstanding but at least to a man (almost) it was better with a little more fight and determination. Scott McManus is still not a captain though. JVOH goals were both goodins and Skippy took his well too although if that was my keeper I would expect Boruc to save that shot. 4-1 was good looking from previous results perspective but I felt we should have went for more. Bad goal to lose once again from the minute the ball was lost by Hartley to the shot from Scott McManus.

Paul was Scott McManus a slip of the finger or meant as a joke missed by all on here previously? LOL.

However, the man has oodles of skill and you have to think that, if we persisted with him, the connection between McGeady/Naka and him could be highly significant. The problem is fleeting appearances do not foster such relationships on the field of play.

Hartley and Robson were effective today by just doing what they were supposed to do. Let's not kid ourselves that we have a midfielder who can control a game like Wee Bazza, but with at least two fighters in the middle then our flair players can dictate the course of the game.
I agree with Kano about Naka and I would play Evander to let Barry Robson push up on the left. I've been bleeting on here about putting Aiden back on the right for weeks. He would have Papac spinning like a top.

Wilson should have had game time before now to put pressure on Lee Naylor, who seems to be guaranteed a game no matter how poor his previous performance was.
Haven't been overly impressed with the defensive performances of Herr Hinkel and was glad to see Paul Caddis on the bench. Great things expected of this bhoy.

Papac won't be playing on Wednesday. Smith will go with Whitakkear. Cousin will play up through the middle to batter our centre halves. Midfield will consist of Davis on the right. Ferguson, Thomson and Dailly in the centre with McCulloch on the left. Broadfoot, Weir, Cuellar and Whitakkear in defence.

to answer your question I would need to know what a "real" change was as opposed to a change. And I might need an answer option that doesn't fit the pre-judgement that he's a fud.

    Hey Ho, we won today.

At half time in the South Stand lower , I looked around and saw a Celtic fan slumped in his chair, arms folded, with the expression of someone who found out his internet bride was Vanessa Feltz. It looked like this guy came for a different kind of party and could find no fun in the absence of rancour and booing today.

Six more cup finals to go. Maybe we won't achieve the miracle but, until then, let's enjoy the ride.

Maybe he should get booked every match from our kick-off instead of just getting a free kick given against him.

Hey maybe we could actually vary our kick off?

understand the comment of Hartley not getting a game when many think he should therefore a little bit of over-reaction when he comes in and does well

However I have to disagree with the favourites comment as this and the comments about formations just seem to annoy me recently.

Doesn't matter if we play Robson/Hartley/Donati or me and it doesn't matter if we play 4-4-2 or 9-0-1 it is the coaching that is the problem.

The Manager doesn't instill cofindence in the players and the coaching is poor. He says the defence are doing well. Is he having a laugh??

    Watch us closely!!

Everytime we have the ball there is no movement and every pass needs to be a 50 yard decent one. Is speaks well for the players that on most occasions they carry out this pass successfully but this tactic only leads to sloppy possesion.

The fans can see he is not a decent Manager and his interviews just back up the view.

Can anyone explain why a team who did not look like they were doing anything on the training field for the last 8 weeks were given the day off on Wednesday???

Can someone please explain that one to me.

    Please can someone explain it.

There's lots I know. Much more I don't. I can't say how the league is going to end this season. But that in itself is a good sign, surely?

But if the ebb and flow of Karma is a truth? Then their fans and by dint their team have been stockpiling a hell an amount of bad karma over the past few months.

The Nakamura banner is another, yes another, scandalous incendiary action which they, it seems, are allowed to make/take with impunity.

It truly makes my heart sad.

More to be pitied yet I find it harder to find that pity.

But I'm with Earl on this one and I'm trying to be a better person. I can only let karma dispense its logic and watch.

And each time something like this happens I can only hope it is their meridian of ignorance from which they will start their journey to, if not enlightenment, then acceptance.

    I can only hope.

    6 games left people.

rambles on about how lucky we are to have him, last 16 blah blah, accuses us of "astonishing arrogance" to want Strachan out and someone like Moyes in (his words) and quotes Ron Atkinson, yes Ron Atkinson, as a backer of Strachan. Big Ron the racist reckons that Strach wont be short of plum job offers in England once he leaves.

    fan-a-tic,
I was not inferring, I was saying the home support has been a man down this season, simple as.
The anti GS campaign has been gathering momentum for the previous two seasons, I'm not surprised he has so many dissenters with the press and GS haters among the support, spreading ill feeling towards him.
The riordan thing has been festerring since last year, why would anyone sympathise with a players problem, a player who publishes his problem thereby making his problem more important than the team. If riordan disrespected the gaffer in any way and was not contrite then he should be taught the meaning of earning respect.
In all honesty, that is my opinion and I dont think GS would be right to walk away at the end of the season as he has been given 5 year for his plan, I hope.

    Tonybhoy...It could be Worse...!!!

    Celtic Win Away in Europe...!!!

    Celtic in the 90s

Following Celtic's win at Aberdeen the team travelled to sun soaked Georgia (not the US state but the former Soviet republic that was in a complete state) to play Dinamo Batumi in the Cup Winners Cup. The social climate of the place was such that the phrase 'war torn' featured in almost every newspaper piece prior to the game. Fans were advised by the Foreign Office not to travel due to safety concerns. Chic Young was being encouraged by the fans to travel for the same reason. And so it was that we all missed the opportunity to see Celtic's first away victory in Europe for nine years - and that was against Shamrock Rovers. The last decent away win was 13 years previously in Amsterdam.

Now here's one of these occasions that really makes you feel the SFA doesn't like Celtic very much. We played Batumi on the Thursday, UEFA having split the tournaments up in order to maximise TV revenue; the UEFA cup would be played on Tuesday, Champions League on Wednesday and Cup Winners Cup on Thursday. Clearly the clubs playing in the Cup Winners Cup could be at disadvantage given that their fixture would only be two days away from the next league card. The journey back wasn't exactly a shuttle trip from London, the players only returning to Glasgow in the small hours of Saturday morning having been on the move for most of the previous day, yet Celtic were obliged to play a game against Motherwell. The club had asked for, and been refused, a delay of 24 hours in order to recover from the journey.

Despite everything, it all started off quite nicely. The fact that it was the first league game in the new stadium gave everyone a lift and O'Donnell scored a cracking goal, but by the last 20 minutes it was obvious that the players were dead on their feet. They conceded an equaliser and wound up hanging on for a point. Now, of course, it's standard for teams playing on a Thursday to have their games delayed to the Sunday, but this only came in to being after it had cost us a number of points. When it came to another team being hampered by these circumstances the league rules were immediately altered. Infuriating to say the least, although nothing compared to what lurked just over the horizon.

After we had slain the beast from Raith in the League Cup the draw had paired us with Rangers at Celtic Park. What a chance this was. Not only could we knock them out the cup and therefore have a great chance of the trophy, we could also make them fear Celtic Park again. The feeling was that we could certainly do it.

The lead up to the game, however, was anything but smooth. Basically, John Collins had decided that this was his last season in Scotland and given that the Bosman rule had just come into force the English clubs were hovering, hoping that Celtic would cash in on the player while they still could. Whilst the player himself seemed to be playing well through it all the fans' perception of him plummeted. If he was leaving we just hoped he'd go with more than one winners medal. Tuesday seemed like a good way to ensure that.

In the event a lot hinged on the man in the middle - Jim McCluskey. Already a hate figure amongst the Celtic Park faithful thanks to his lenient (to say the least) treatment of Hurlock in the early part of the decade he was about to cement his reputation as a less than fair referee.

The game started well from our point of view. McStay was clearly charged up for it and we had the most of the play. Midway through the first half the Maestro picked up the ball and twisted away from Gasciogne who gave chase. First he gave a tug on McStay's shirt before forcing his left arm over the Celtic player's shoulder and elbowing him in the face. The referee immediately blew the whistle, awarded the free kick to Celtic and approached the Englishman. But rather than show a red card (the rule book punishment for such an infraction) he let him off with a ''Quick word in the ear.''

One player who did wind up in the ref's book was Charlie Miller. He also managed to commit another 5 to 10 fouls during the remainder of the game but remained on the park. McCoist, too, got himself involved in an incident that had nothing to do with him (even running some 25 yards to get amongst it and attempting to head butt a Celtic player). No punishment. Can you guess which three huns combined to score the only goal of the game?

As if that wasn't bad enough Goram had one of those nights where nothing was going to get past him. With any other keeper on the park McStay would have had a hat trick. To round off a thoroughly terrible evening Andreas Thom injured himself making a rash tackle and had to be stretchered off. It was hard to take, especially just as we were beginning to look like a team again. Final score, 1:0 to Rangers.

Before the next league game the Collins saga really blew up. Middlesborough were the most interested team (it would have been a real blow to the ego if he'd gone there) but they were keeping their powder dry for now. Tommy Burns, on the other hand, was not so patient. Infuriated by what he considered to be a media campaign orchestrated by Collins' agent he dropped him for the trip to Hearts. Tynecastle hadn't exactly been a happy hunting ground for us in recent seasons ( then again where had?) but we seemed to be making life especially difficult for ourselves with Collins dropped and Pierre and Thom out injured. In place of these players came Brian McLaughlin, Chris Hay and Andy Walker.

This game again illustrated how far we had come since the previous season as we took Hearts to bits. We were two ahead within 10 minutes, both goals coming from an unlikely source in the tiny shape of wee Brian McLaughlin. First he mopped up after the keeper had failed to hold a McStay shot from the edge of the box and then scored a real beauty. Gathering the ball at the halfway line he ran straight through the Hearts defence, even nutmegging Dave McPherson before clipping the ball over the goalie. In the second half Walker added another two and real gubbing had been handed out. Literally as well, as Peter Grant was sent off for throwing a punch instead of a point.

Following the game TB gave an interview to Gerry McNee explaining his position on the John Collins situation; typically it was full of passion for the club and a complete disbelief that someone could want to play elsewhere.

The second round of our European tie with Dinamo Batumi was an enjoyable experience. Four goals were slotted past the Georgians as we went through 7:2 on aggregate, with the stars of the show being Simon Donnelly (who scored a fabulous long range effort) and Brian McLaughlin (who set up Thom for the opening two goals). It set us up nicely for the weekend when we had the chance for revenge on Rangers at Celtic Park.

But this time we had no complaints as we meekly went down 2:0. Hell, we even let Alec Clelland score. Gasbag scored the second.

Despondency about that result quickly evaporated after the draw for the next round of the Cup Winners Cup. We were drawn against Paris Saint Germain, at that time one the form teams in Europe. In the previous two seasons they had reached the semi final of both the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. They had lost two of their top players (Ginola we've already discussed and George Weah who joined AC Milan), but they were still a formidable outfit.

Nationally the Scottish game was getting a lot of coverage, not just thanks to the Sky deal. The arrival of Gasbag across the way had turned the spotlight to the perceived sectarian divide in Glasgow (can't be too much of a divide really; Celtic had supporters from all faiths and colours. Rangers... well what can you say?). Channel 4's take on the matter was a documentary called 'Football, Faith and Flutes'. It wasn't really designed to alter anyone's preconceived ideas about Glasgow and its residents who watch either of the big two. The Celtic fan featured was such a committed supporter that he watched the games on Sky in his local pub and spouted out absurdities like 'I'm Catholic, I have to hate Protestants,' while the featured hun had a home made tattoo on his inside lip and simply regurgitated things he'd obviously heard in his local lodge. Cutting edge journalism it wasn't.

The managerial response to the Rangers defeat was positive at least; Jackie McNamara Jnr. was bought from Dunfermline for £650,000, a fabulous piece of business. He immediately slotted in a right back and looked as though he'd been a Celtic player for years. In particular he struck up a great partnership with Simon Donnelly, who had been playing on the right hand side of midfield now that Thom and Pierre had taken the front two positions. Jackie made his debut at Brockville (oh the glamour of the top division), but he wasn't the star of the show on the night. That honour went to John Hughes, returning for the first time to the ground where he made his name. Typically he scored the only goal of the game to win a hard fought three points.

The following Saturday we Finally won a Glasgow derby, although it was only against Thistle and it wasn't exactly an entirely convincing 2:1 win. Pierre scored the first after neat play from Donnelly and Collins wrapped up the game with a nice free-kick, although Thistle did cause some tension by scoring just before the end. Truth be told it could have been pretty grim if Thistle's new Liverpudlian forward Rod McDonald hadn't been the worst finisher since Jim Melrose. Twice he was left with only the goalie to beat, twice the wee boys of Barrowfield had a nice shiny ball to play with.

Rod (who had already been 'outed' as a Celtic supporter in the press when it was revealed that King Kenny had been his hero as a kid so naturally he preferred Celtic) would go on to book his own place in football history that season when Thistle took on Rangers at Firhill; As the players made their way into the dressing room Rod, as was his wont, CROSSED himself as he left the pitch. So far so normal, happens in most countries week in week out. However, a hun in the crowd saw this and went mental (so far so normal) complaining to a policeman. And here's where it gets really wacky. The Policeman actually takes this loony seriously and goes to the referee's room with this complaint. The referee then calls McDonald into the dressing room and awards him a Yellow card!!! Not only that but in the second half Rod fouls Gasbag, gets a second yellow and hence a red, to the confusion of everyone in the crowd (except the Neanderthal who started the whole thing). Now whenever there was an incident of some kind at a football game in Scotland that wasn't too nice, crowd trouble that kind of thing, the pundits would bemoan the fact that this event would be broadcast all over the world and bring shame on to the game. Ordinarily of course they are talking complete cobblers, (do the good people of Lima really care if there was a fight at Pitoddrie?) but you'd better believe that the world's press was most interested in the backwards wee country at the northern end of Europe where the Refs book you for CROSSING yourself and the national association sides with the ref. That did catch the eye of the footballing world. Couldn't make it up could you? Of course it goes without saying that when Rod was dismissed the game was tied 1:1 and Rangers ran out 2:1 winners against the ten Thistle men who were sure to keep their superstitions and rituals well to themselves from then on. The MIB on that shameful occasion was Jim McGilvray. He retired shortly afterwards on the pretext that SFA regulations were cramping his style, but later admitted to the Scottish Sun that Gasbag should indeed have been sent from the field that afternoon but he didn't want to be the first to do it and thereby 'start a riot'. Celtic's paranoia right enough!

Back at Celtic Park we were about to royally shoot ourselves in the foot against Hibs. We murdered them. A team has rarely been so outplayed. They barely touched the ball. Except, of course, on the two occasions when they scored (they had a grand total of three shots during the entire game). It was galling. Celtic's football couldn't be faulted but rather than play a final pass we seemed to prefer making another pretty passing pattern.

With Rangers sitting on top of the league and PSG looming large on the horizon we had to start getting a bit more clinical.

But you didn,t say that in your 1st post.
I am not a fan of GS but i have always clearly stated my reasons why. They are all purely footballing reasons.
While i think DR has not been given a fair chance i have refrained from comment as i dont know the whole truth on subject.
    Respect is mutual.
The problems of this season are pretty much the same as second half of last season so i have no confidence in our coaches ability to fix our obvious deficiencies.
While i don,t personalise critcism of our coach i have been vociferous in my critique of his tactical and coaching flaws so i can categorically state that i hope he is replaced next season.

It cannot be denied that throughout this season, Gordon Strachan has made some bad decisions, both in terms of team selection and tactics. Overall, it his been a very bad season for Gordon and I am sure that at the end of the season, he will sit down with his closest advisers and take stock, before planning for the next campaign.

So basically, what I am saying is, for this season and this season alone, he deserves criticism of sorts. However, what I cannot accept is the constant charge that Celtic only won 2 SPL title because Rangers were so poor, and that we only qualified for the last 16 of the CL on two occasions, out of sheer luck and nothing else.

I have read this risible claim on CQN and other Celtic sites. I have also heard it uttered in the various phone-ins and media letters pages, and it is always so-called Celtic fans who come out with this garbage.

How can you criticise a man who has managed his club, in his first two seasons in charge, to two league championships, on the basis that there was no challenge? Is that Gordon Strachan’s fault? He won both titles with lots to spare, so the argument doesn’t hold water. To get to two CL last 16s, we defeated Manchester United, Benfica and Milan, among others. If some Celtic fans want to call that luck, then they are following the wrong team.

It really does make me sick to hear Celtic fans come out with this rubbish and anyone who does, really needs to take a long hard look at themselves.

My criticism of GS is not based on this season alone and i think his success was more to do with weak opposition than great tactical brilliance.
Why are genuine Celtic supporters who have concerns and criticism labeled so called?
As i stated in my post at 00.33 that i dont want GS at Celtic next season does that make me only a so called Celtic supporter.
On this blog i have already been told by another poster that he was a better celtic fan than me after i criticised him for telling Celtic supporters he disagreed with to get a season ticket to ibrox.
    The irony made me chuckle.
Your point and support of GS are valid.
I don,t agree. But your veiled atack on fellow Celtic supporters was uncalled for.

It was nice to see Gordon shake Scott's hand as he was coming off with Scott putting his arm around around his manager. I think some managers would have allowed that incident last week to have been blown into a big issue but I feel Gordon has dealt with it well. McDonald's always been a moaner and it's something which he needs to cut out his attitude but I think it's wrong to suggest that it represents a collapse of the dressing room or anything sinister like that,.

fan-a-tic, I was not attacking Celtic fans for not supporting Strachan, or for voicing the opinion that he should be sacked. Those are valid opinions, regardless of whether or not one agrees with them.

I was having a dig at Celtic fans who criticise Strachan for his first two seasons, claiming we only won because Rangers were so bad and only got to the last 16 of the CL out of sheer good fortune. Do we criticise Jock Stein for winning 9-in-a-row while Rangers were so bad, with people like David White at the helm? Of course not.

So again, I wasn't talking about people thinking Strachan is not up to the job per se. It's the opologists who criticise him retrospectively and downgrade his successes who make me want to throw up.

A tale of two midfields and the loss of potency.

Wednesday night will be a crucial. Lose and we will be in the final part of Gotterdammerung....win and just maybe.....

I was convinced at the start of the season that Scott MacDonald would be the difference between he two teams. He has scored a phenomenal amount of goals (many more than Henrik in his first season 17) but went off the boil just at the wrong time.

However our main problem has been midfield. It has lacked balance and more importantly composure.

It often creates alot of heat but little light.

Ran666ers may be boring to watch but their performance in Lisbon was composed. At the moment we lack one thing they have...Barry Ferguson. In Scottish Football he is without equal. He will not be great in every game but he is a leader and his team is his mirror image.

Scott Brown may one day justify his transfer fee but he could do worse than study videos of Captain Ned as we affectionately like to call him. He often dictates the whole tempo of a game.

On Wednesday night we need our Barry to be right in his face at all times (except when he is blasting the ball past the serial sha666er).

Our fans have far too often underestimated Barry Ferguson. When I consider the POTY nominees his omission is just nonsensical.

If Barry Robson can get the better of Ferguson this week then we will emerge victorious. And he should get the POTY award.

Just while I'm at it. What does Celtic-minded mean? Does it mean wanting to play football the Glasgow Celtic way? How many other managers play with two wide men in nearly every game?

Ghordon Strachan IS Celtic minded? He may not be the best manager in the world but he is OUR manager and deserves our support.

He is citicised on every Celtic supporters website for what he says to the press. Our greatest manager treated the press with disdain from day one. Ghordon does too and for good reason.

When Ghordon leaves I the the next manager is keenly aware that we have few friends outwith our club and our asupporters. When we turn on ourselves we make it eay for them.

    MON THE HOOPS!

    Steelica.

Was saying the very same thing about Ferguson in the pub yesterday. If Strachan took him as lightly as some of our fans do, then we would be in trouble. I suspect, however, that most of our fans recognise his talents but show their frustration with a sychophantic Press by refusing to acknowledge his ability. Anyway, I come here to bury the Hun, not to praise them!
Celtic have been making chance after chance in virtually every game. When we take even a below average amount, we usually still win; average, win solidly (like yesterday) and when converting a good percentage we win comfortably (Kilmarnock, for instance). So, against Rangers we will almost certainly create more. The confidence which will come from yesterday should greatly increase our chances of putting those chances away. If the crowd plays its part and oozes belief rather than creating an atmosphere of tension, then both the points and momentum will be with us.
Roar them on, Bhoys, roar them on.

There is no doubt that going to the away games is much more fun than sitting in CP, even with the sect114 diehards.

I was invited out yesterday to see an old friend who is not doing very well. I therefore had to set my SKY+ box into overtime. By the time I got home last night I had to get through the tic-well, Mu-Arse, Real-Murcia, Bayern-Dort games.

I haven´t read any posts since Saturday night so sorry if you have all heard this before.

A great result and a better performance although I thought Motherwell were poorer than they were last week. The Fir park pitch is a disgrace.

Although Hartley got man of the match. I feel that he still cannot last the 90 minutes and that´s been hindering his selection. I think if he was a bit more economical with his energy and less box-to-box he might well be an assured holding player. More discipline from him and he might get a regular starting place yet.

It was obvious that there was more commitment that there has been at the previous encounters at CP. Although I dont think Scott Brown can be accused of lacking commitment. He has the opposite problem.

I was very surprised to see Donati not even on the bench yesterday. Was he injured? Dropped? Can he only play with Brown? All very intriguing?

I found WGS comments after the game very illuminating. Our commitment was a joy to behold and last week the football was a joy to behold. Sometimes I think it would be better if he just said nothing. For me that´s a testament hat the commitment recently has been less than it should have been. Why ? When we are going for a title? When Rangers are ahead of us in the league? and for me it was a sad admission.

Well its back to CP on Wednesday night against Rangers and such commitment should be taken absolutely for granted. Not something to behold or to be
gauged but so absolutely inherent in a Celtic player that it shouldn´t be up for discussion and that´s just for wearing the hoops not picking up the pay cheque

If Jan and Skippy dont go into hiding against Rangers´s big bad boys Weir and Cuellar then we need to put away an early chance. If we can do that then I believe that we can beat them comfortably and start to sew a few seeds of doubt.

The players can take a few crumbs of comfort from yesterdays performance but we need to start scoring goals by playing through them as we wont get many free kicks. So the reliance on set pieces still disguises frailties

The CP home support on Wednesday can take a few lessons from yesterdays away support which was magnificent.

Barry Robson is a must for this game. He only came on as a sub at Ibrox but he has one cap less and its time for him to show Burley, Butcher and the loyal doctor that they made two mistakes by sending him home.

As for every other Celtic player who is at Celtic Park and has managed to get; a well paid contract, a first team place, a national team place, an increased profile, medals because of Wee Gordon Strachan then it is high time that you put your mind body and soul on the line for him and demonstrate to all of us that you are part of us by hammering Rangers into meek submission and showing them who´s the champions. It´s high time

    Hail Hail

Such gems as ...over 500 watching the day...welcome mums and dads, sons and daughters... fir f**** sake look at Hartley. He was clean shaven when he started the game. The wolfman of Parkeheid returns.

One comment he made time and again was how the ball was sticking to our team. Granted this was due to a very high work rate (even Naka was getting stuck in) but as I mentioned the other day the small margins that can be the difference between success and failure went mostly in our favour.

Skippys goal (slight deflection), Micks first. Although the build up to their goal was good it was jammy that it ended up in the net.

Had to laugh at an article in the Daily Rangers today.....

Rangers rapped by council inspectors for dirty kitchens

FOOD hygiene inspectors slammed Rangers after finding insects in the kitchens and stores of their hospitality suites.

Rotting food and a bucket of stagnant water were also discovered in areas where meals are prepared.

Glasgow City Council made the finds when they checked out the kitchens at Ibrox 18 months ago but their report has just been made public.

Rangers, who boast Sir Sean Connery among their VIP fans, got the worst rap from the officials.

One kitchen - next to the prestigious Thornton Suite, which hosts champagne receptions and five-course meals - was infested with sewage flies.

Well-heeled supporters fork out up to £5460 a season for a table in the executive hospitality area next to manager Walter Smith's office.

Inspectors found larder beetles in a members' lounge kitchen store, filter flies in the Thornton Suite and Argyle Suite kitchens and "putrefying food matter" in a store.

They also called for a "deep clean" of some kitchen areas.

A Rangers spokeswoman said: "The points raised were addressed to the complete satisfaction of the inspectors within three weeks."

Inspectors also visited Celtic Park, Partick Thistle's Firhill and Hampden.

Celtic's cleanliness and pest control standards were "generally satisfactory" but they were ordered to make some repairs.

Staff at Hampden were ordered to clean facilities and repair broken tiles, flaking paint, missing ceiling panels and damaged door seals.

Partick got a clean bill for Firhill.

    mcmanus69,

    18 months mmmmmh !!

I´m surprised that PLG hasn´t been proven responsible for this cuisine faux-pas.

Maybe getting ripped off on and off the park was too much for the bears to swallow at once and hence the delay

btw still no excuse for you to go reading the Record ;-)

As we play Aberdeen on Saturday,I was wondering whether there's a meeting up of similar minds, regarding a wee dram before the Game.
If I'm well enough I'll be there, regardless of a meet up,or not,but it would be nice to see you and the rest of the clique.
I prefer gang myself, but someone christened us a clique,so I'll stick with that.

Great result and performance yesterday, and want to hold my hand up as being proved wrong.
As many were calling for the inclusion of Hartley and Robson, I was against it as I felt it would affect the chances we created, as I guessed that Naka would be the one who might make way.
Scott Browns suspension sorted that one out though, and I thought both Paul and Barry played well and gave us some added bite in the middle, and for once our midfield looked like a composed unit, with grit and no little skill.
I still dont understand anyone who nitpicks about Naka though, I thought once again he was sublime, dont think he misplaced a pass the whole day, and his ability to take a pass under pressure, and re-distribute is incredible, and extremely important to maintaining posession.
Unfortunately it seems to be overlooked by some.

Are you sure there was nothing in there that said the environmental health inspector was a disgruntled Celtic supporter!!!

I heard Tam Cowan on about this yesterday and said that they had found beatles and flies. He said there wasnae any flies because the fly was no offender!

I thought he would have made a joke about Alan Macgregor and cockroaches myself.

Not been on for the last week or so, courtesy of a very dodgy so called wi-fi connection in my hotel in South Wales.

As to yesterday, overall good performance and good victory. That's more like it!
I thought both BR and PH did enough to merit starting places on Wed night, but then, more than just me on here have been advocating these two in midfield for many weeks now.

Good to see the front two get on the scoresheet, should put them in good frame of mind for the huns. I have a feeling both JVoH and SMcD, as well as big GS, will have parts to play on Wed night.

As for the defence, Hinkel is still the only one for me who would be in my starting line-up next season, Wed night, whenever. The mini-huns goal and hughes' run alone yesterday should highlight that. However we all know the changes a lot of us want in that area are not going to happen under WGS so I shall move swiftly on!

Like many have already stated, the support on the whole yesterday were superb. Well done for giving the Bhoys what seemed to be 100% backing from start to finish.
Let's take that support onto Wed night and get behind the team from the warm-up onwards and drown the Orc hordes out all night!

Everyone knows that to beat the huns we need to score first, then Wattenacio ( don't know who it was who coined this wee gem, but top marks to you as this is the perfect term for their/his "football") is oot the windae and they need a plan B that I don't think they really have in their locker.

We have to beat them sometime wed night is as good a time as any.

    GETINTAETHEM!!

    HAIL! HAIL!

PS - Sixoclock from yesterday/earlier today, re. Hoopy. As I understand it there are 2 "Hoopy's". One of whom I cannot make any comment on, the other I can most definitely state is "Celtic-Minded"! I played football with him for a couple of seasons a few years back and still bump into him occasionally. Went to many games with him in the past and is a big Celtic man being, as he is, from Coatbridge.

I have a scanned copy of the offending Sunday Herald "bead rattler" article, and even by laptop loyal standards I am shocked that this made it into print. The author is even pictured in suitably intellectual serious pose as is the custom in the'high-brow' papers. I can't post until I get home this evening but if no-one else has posted by then I will post a link.

Today's Daily Express is a laugh too. They are obviously feeling confident - back page "PARKHEAD WIN IS NEXT"

And no... they aren't talking about Celtic. McInnes' loyal apprentice boy Gary Keown informs us that Sally has vowed "Let's smash Celtic".

Yes that is the quote although to be fair to Coisty [and who wants to be?]I think it's a figment of the hack's salivating fantasy as the quote does not appear again in those attributed to the original mad shagger.

This is accompanied by 3 pages of all singing dancing coverage including colour photos of the gers celebrating both goals. Celtic have a wee snippet at the bottom of the back page and a wee bit more continued inside.

Two pages are given over to Queen of the South, a full page to Hamilton Accies, a page to the EPL two for the Masters, even the flamin rugby gets two pages!

I suppose if it's not more 'Celtic in crisis' copy the LL are just not interested.

I was gobsmacked that this story reached print, I believe the article said something about all has been taken care of, maybe it'll make an episode of Gordon's Kitchen Nightmares! :-)

Or maybe we should start to refer to Murray as "Lord of the Flies"

Re the Ibrox catering story - Great to see our ever vigilant Scottish press highlighting the stories that matter whilst ignoring the mundane stuff like fans displaying banners dripping with racial and religious hatred.

Along with our years of unsurpassed dignity!

    You couldn't make it up!

Maybe the Jungle Bhoys can make up a banner like "Ain't no Flies on Us" for Wednesday night.

    Sixoclock,

I did wonder whether you were serious or not (esp given the manager's job part), but I thought I should put the record straight for the sake of Hoopy, who being the sensitive soul that he is, might have taken offence.

In saying that, unless he has repeated O grade english recently its highly unlikely he could take offence as reading was not one of his strongpoints!!
[just in case you are lurking Hoopy :-)]

Dignity? do they know the meaning of the word?

As always the story is the same: "We dealt with the issue just as soon as we got caught."

All I can say is that the flies and other beasties would have felt very much at home in that midden.
