While the ‘Scotland’s shame’ banner was the cleverest thing I have seen come from football stands since the beach ball carpet at Ibrox in 2003, I enjoyed the Rangers’ banner, “Scot’s Mhedia, Lawwell’s monkeys” last week.
Coming as it does in a season when the Scot’s (sic) media have reported falsehoods and offensive remarks against Celtic people (STV - Pittodrie, Daily Record – Jock Stein, Sun – fans in Barcelona, Sunday Herald – bead rattling), perhaps they believe Peter Lawwell has been running a subversive plot against Celtic and the club’s fans by having his monkeys report as they do.
Or maybe the fact that the mud doesn’t stick is beginning to get to them and they inadvertently betrayed an assessment for the job our chief executive is doing.
‘They’re as bad as each other’ has been peddled lazily in Scotland for as long as I have been media aware, but I don’t hear it anymore from anyone worth reading or listening too. Neither do Rangers fans, which is why Scotland has new Paranoia Champions.
As a result we are under microscopic analysis. If a man wearing green socks sings about the Mountains of Mourne we’ll see the ‘S’ word thrown at Celtic fans again.
This situation will not last forever, cries of “Wolf” attract less and less attention each time, and clearly, ‘they’re not as bad as each other’. Enjoy the game.

COMMENT-BODY:Speaking of inventiveness, does anyone remember leaving Ibrox in 1966 when the Glasgow Cup was the fifth most important trophy in the world?
They'd been expanding their lungs for a while about living in an Orange Submarine. We beat them 4-0 (McNeill, Lennox 3).
On the way down the treacherous Ibrox steps after the game (the second time that year we'd beaten them by 4 goals) to a man and bhoy we burst into "We've just sunk an Orange Submarine....)
Simple stuff but oh how we laughed.
Still makes me smile though, and shiver at thoss steps.

COMMENT-BODY:Just in from being up in the big ciy picking the cubs up from a concert. On my way down after dropping them off before the said concert I put on five live and found out the huns game was about to start so before putting on radio 2 as DBBIA had advised I heard the classic lines fom the english commentator.
The huns team who won the last european trophy they won are known as the barcelona bears (ed is that true as it is the first time ive ever heard that name) and he followed it up with the classic and they were led by Tony greig ... as I always said its not cricket when they play.
As I was driving along I thought its good to know that our bbc licence is being well used when both bbc scotland and 5 have 2 seperate commentary teams at the same game and neither of them know what they are talking about.

Rangers fans have as much right to sing historical songs as Celtic fans do and I've defended the right of both to do so frequently.
The fact that a song may be offensive is no grounds for having it banned.

When I went and worked in a charing cross office as an 'apprentice' I remeber a nasty minded blue nose that was rather bitter, never went to games but acted as if he did.
At that time I wasnt going to games. I was a bit Madchester.
Every Monday this feck would come in and big up 'his team'.
But the thing I remember him saying is 'That he as a hun was there to see Celtic bring home the big cup outside CP.'
I think thats one of the reasons that old man is bitter.

While nobody can be required to post anywhere, and I do think you were at the sharp end of some unfair treatment, I have to say that the sparcity of your posts since the the last time your team were our guests - and your sudden reappearance after a good result - does invite comment on your intestinal fortitude.
I couldn't count the Rangers fans I have known who are highly audible when things are going well for their team and yet "just didn't turn up in the pub that night" when they suffered a surprise reverse.
Strangely, it has honestly been my experience that most Celtic fans really don't do that. There are exceptions, of course, on both sides.

COMMENT-BODY:OneStar :- I normally make a point of posting after bad results as well as good, a quick glance through previous posts would prove this. The reason I haven't posted so much recently (in fact hardly at all) was that I was seriously considering removing myself from the blog. This was due to the fact that after a couple of year posting (which should remove any doubts that I don't post after bad results) I still have folk who are desperate to find some element of sectarianism or bigotry in my posts. I still have folk ask me the same question time and time again despite the fact I have given full answers to the question asked. The crunch for me came when I made straightforward football points giving football reasons and was accussed of triumphilism. This was followed bu an outright lie posted about me that I didn't tend to keep away from the blog the day after a Rangers/Celtic game no matter the result.
On reflection I came to the conclusion that missing out on the banter and jokes I have with some folk on here made up for the others.

COMMENT-BODY:i'm facintated with the Ibrox situation right now. Its finely balanced like a powder keg waitng to explode. The same fans who are happy with the "winning ugly" football are waiting to pounce the second Rangers lose due to tactical negativity. I have a feeling this is on the brink.
The football offered by Rangers is quite simply atrocious and a total embarassment.
I watched the game tonight with 3 italians and a dutch couple - i was actually willing Rangers to at least string 3 passes together as i was cringing at the thought of worldwide audiences watching the cream of scottish football look like clueless amateurs - happy to sit at the edge of the 18 yard line for the full 90mins.
Seriously, I cant think of Celtic ever approaching a game with this attitude - this is not football and would be enough to turn supporters away unless you watch your team for non football reasons.
Celtic and Fiorentina must teach them a lesson - creativity , guile and decisiveness must break down this anti entertainment establishment and remind them of why football is the greatest game in the world.

Everything you say seems fair - and I certainly haven't been here long enough to pass any judgements.
It just surprised me.
I don't think you should be expected to justify every policy of RFC and nor should you have to field the kind of thought police questions that I have seen directed at you.
I have had similar discussion with many Rangers supporters, one of whom I ended up giving my second name. That had a relatively happy ending though it took a twist that few could even have imagined, least of all Mrs Means More.

I didn't see the article (I don't live in Ireland anymore)but if its the Dublin Herald it will be shining a nice bright light on the murky Dublin RSC and their sad, pathetic existence. Of course, the first part is almost correct. "Scot's mhedia" would imply that the media belongs to a single Scot. I wonder who that might be??
And anyone with an education would know that as the second part is an elaboration on the first part, the comma should be replaced by a full colon. To be technical, it is the use of the syntactical-deductive.

To pick up your previous point about "go home ya Huns" causing offence to them - I am familiar with equalities regulations which say that any racial slur that causes offence is sufficient for disciplinary action even if the slur was unintentional. However there is also the provision to be made concerning whether the statement itself constitutes a slur. I would compare the argument that "go home ya Hun" is as offensive as "go home the famine is over", with the recent case of the baldy teacher who tried to sue the council. This unfortunate man had to leave employment as a teacher due to abuse suffered from pupils and contended that his follicle challenged condition was in effect a disability. This was dismissed by a judge as absurd.
I would also compare the Rankers fans who contend that the media have an agenda against them as spoiled children. One child may be upset because he is forced to eat rice and water for his dinner. Another because he didn't get an extra helping of ice cream after his three course meal in Frankie & Benny's. The emotional reaction of both may be roughly the same but this does not prove that the treatment of both children is ergo the same.
In essence, they are spoiled children who have had everything their own way for over a century. In their view this is proper because it is "their" country and "we" are aliens. I also think there is an element of seeing us by their own standards (after all we are scum compared to them) i.e. because nearly every chant/song/slogan they come up with embodies some sort of religious or racial hatred, then, in turn, our reference to "Hun" MUST be a religious slur (after all we are just as bad as them remember). Similarly "the animals" in a Grand Old team MUST be some sort of religious jibe.
We are no angels and I am sure you are trying to get me to state that our behaviour e.g. "go home ya Huns" contributes to their view. However I am convinced these views would persist whatever our behaviours so we shouldn't be cow-towed. Simply playing in green and white would be enough for some of them.
I play 5-a-sides with reasonably rational and educated guys
who would not be viewed as rampant bigots who simply refuse to wear a football kit containing any trace of the colour green. In another country this might be viewed as at best, eccentric and at worst, insane. In this country it is viewed as normal".

Thanks for re-posting what Tony Bananas said. I missed it first time around and agree with you that the points are excellent. Well done Tony.
There is an extra element at play, which is one of the reasons our relationship with them is still so fraught when other similar rivalries in England morphed into mere football rivalries.
Scotland is the only place in the world where Calvinism captured almost an entire country and Calvinist attitudes to Catholicism are entrenched here; they go much deeper than cultural diversity.
There is no doubt in my mind that this is part of the reason for the visceral animosity directed at us by a large proportion of the Rangers support, even if the people involved take nothing to do with the Church of Scotland as it is today.
And for the record, relations between the Church of Scotland and the Catholic Church have never been better, thank God.

(IMHO the best history book ever regards Scotland)

Watched the game last night, and I have to say I really DID laugh out loud when their keeper was interviewed after the game and (SERIOUSLY!!) said that they were confident about the return leg because.... wait for it.... I think you are right. Obviously religion is a dangerous subject - and invariably invites the wisdom of people who contend that all religion is mental illness - but it is obviously very relevant to this.
In particular, I think the Calvinist notion that we are not all equal before God - effectively we are either God's chosen people or not - accommodates the kind of vile contempt that we see demonstrated against Catholics. The Irish Catholics, having also mostly been of poor immigrant stock, are doubly abused.
Now clearly, the hordes are not all or even in the majority Catholics. However, Scotland's history of Calvinism did much to shape the "norms" of our society.
Even those commentators who genuinely do not recognise any prejudice in themselves and therefore think that they are sound judges when it comes to dismissing the seriousness of some of the expressions of intolerance tend to do so from a standpoint shaped by those very same standards from a formative age.
That, I am sure, is why so many good people I know have said most offensive things about my religion and my family's country and concluded that anyone who objects is unreasonable or over-sensitive.
However, I also take issue with people who say: "Well I'm a Catholic and it doesn't bother me" or "I'm half-Irish and I think it's funny" and thereby conclude that others who take a different view need to "get over themselves".
Some men get into fistfights every few weeks and barely bat an eye after them - others find the idea distressing and demeaning.
The fact that one person isn't offended by something doesn't change the right of another to object to it.

You're spot on. The Calvinists wanted to be "the city on a hill", set apart from sinners.
In the case of Geneva, it worked because the authorities could control who came in through the city gates and who had to be sent in the other direction for their unbecoming misdemeanours.
But even in the Netherlands the Calvinists stopped well short of controlling the whole country. Many shunned the very idea of controlling a whole country and took themselves off to South Africa and invented Apartheid. I'm not saying Calvinism is inherently racist, that would be daft, but there is a link for all to see between Calvinist thought and Apartheid.
The Huguenots also kept themselves to themselves, in enclaves in bigger cities and in smaller towns they could control on a similar basis to Geneva such as Montauban.
The only place, I repeat, where practically the whole nation moved to a Calvinist position and where Calvinists took over the running of the entire country was Scotland.
Good things came from this. Scotland had a literacy rate in the seventeenth century that some developed economies cannot match even today. Good things came later from the Enlightenment and from progressive economic theory.
But it wasn't all good and some of the shadows are still there for Scotland, whereas most of the rest of the world has moved on. I suppose that could be a coincidence.

That's because so much of their identity is directed at hatred of all they think Celtic, Catholics, and the Irish stand for.
They think of us as Catholics - F the pope! They think of us as immigrants - send them back. They think of us as Irish - Rule Brittania. They see some of us identifying with Palestinians - bring out the Israel flags. They perceive some sort of socialist identity at Celtic - make Nazi salutes.
I can't wait until they see Celtic as a club strongly against transvestitism.

COMMENT-BODY:Following on from Sean South yesterday @ 21.09 - I have found references to the huns chasing an "unprecedented" quadruple through the usual suspects [Daily Rangers, Evening Times, Setanta, the Herald] but also at The Independent and UEFA website. This seems consistent with the interesting insight provided by the chap who explained the role of one Ronnie Esplin the other day. Kojo also commented on the practice of many outlets publishing the same guff from one orginal source.
Added to the BBCs "SPL league leaders" being in action last night and their "best defensive record in the SPL" gaff, either there is a lot of wishful thinking among journalists these days or even they are not immune to the cosntant drip drip Rangers are awesome propaganda. Or both.
This "unprecedented quadruple" seems reminiscent of another piece of historical revision by the Scottish Meedya. Any time they mention 9-in-a-row these days you know it always means the hun 90s inferior imitation, not the original and best.
