TITLE: League programme irrelevant compared to winning on Sunday

BODY:
By tomorrow evening we will have a better idea of how the league programme will turn out. Assuming Rangers fail to eliminate Fiorentina from the Uefa Cup, starting at Celtic Park on Sunday, they will play eight games in 22 days, six of them away from home. Celtic have four games in the same period.
Celtic will have three games in the first 18 days of May, Rangers will have seven; only 11 days without a game.
On the face of it, reaching the Uefa Cup final seems to marginally ease the pressure on Rangers league challenge. But whereas their only remaining home games against Motherwell and Dundee United looked like their best chance to pick up points, both these games are played in the week before the Uefa Cup final, which would stretch their depleted resources.
I am sure this realisation was the cause of the bluster coming out of Ibrox yesterday.
I expect Rangers to drop four points after their visit to Celtic Park; the opportunity is there for Celtic if they rise to the challenge and will their four games, the most difficult of which will be on Sunday.
We will need to be at their absolute best on Sunday. All of the things we got right last week, such as playing Hartley and Robson in the middle, must be repeated, and the things we got wrong, such as going to sleep at the second ball (more on this later), must be corrected.

I will have to check FIFA rules on this, but there is the chance that our EURO 2008 players could be called up out of our squad for the final game, and as it is a competition there is nothing we could do about it.
If we are forced to play the final game minus these players, what do you think we should do?
The options are as i see it.
1 - complain about the SPL to FIFA or UEFA
2 - rely on the goodwill of for example the Polish FA to let us keep their star player.
3 - try and sort it out with the SPL (which would require them to backtrack)
4 - get on with it and hope we win
Obviously we cannot take to the field in a potentially SPL deciding match minus some of our top players. If there is no other option we should, without doubt, force the SPL to play the final round of games OUTSIDE THE INTERNATIONAL WINDOW as per the rules.
If Rangers reach the UEFA cup final, the SPL could find its days are numbered.

COMMENT-BODY:Canamalar,
Must admit I've been keeping kinda quiet in the last week or so ;-) I think it's mostly not wanting to upset the applecart prior to Sunday as I'm protecting a glimmer of hope that we can still win this league.
What's really changed? TFOD failing to capitalise on our defeat to Motherwell helped. Pumping Motherwell away helped (especially 3 goals from our strikers). WGS actually playing (IMHO) our best 2 central midfielders against Rangers helped. Naka scoring a goal that basically defines the term 'screamer' helped.
How much better a manager does all that make WGS than when I was shouting for his head after Motherwell? I'm not sure, and to be honest I'm not giving it too much thought. Pride's been restored. The Wattanacio hoodoo has been breached. It looks like we're back in this again, so I'll be focussing on singing my heart out and trying to help the team over the finish line.
Maybe what's been acheived is that this summer's assessment of the manager and our squad will be more rational and less rabid. In my book that's a result.
Tell all the huns you know, we're top of the league and they're no!

COMMENT-BODY:Paul,
The Russian/Ukranian leagues. Sides in there will be forced to release players for the tournament.
The key difference here is that the SPL is set up to "harmonise" around tournaments such as EURO 2008, so there should be no clash. What would have happened if Scotland had qualified for EURO?
Lennondinho - probbably cannot do that as without a league Celtic cannot function. However we desperately need to force the issue of changing leagues. To do thins we would need an objective "good reason" and gain support of whichever league we try to join. Our best bet i fancy is to try and halve the length of the SPL, and do a half season league with sides like Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, Benfica, Sporting, Porto as a top up, interim measure before the CL takes over for good.
Personally i don't think this will be an issue due to Rangers injury crisis, fatigue, suspensions etc. They are out of steam.
If however it does happen, and the national teams lawfully force us to release players, the SPL has no real choice other than to play the last round of games before call-ups. If not, then Celtic will have a caurse of action to take against the SPL, although i think that any compensation would be minor.

So Diamond 'placed' the ball into the Celtic goal, after the whistle, once the other players had stopped. He made a mistake, but no goal was scored, and no goal was disallowed, a player played on after the whistle.

COMMENT-BODY:I find the fixture congestion argument pretty laughable. Yes, it has been a challenging season with the weather, drainage problems at Fir Park, and Phil O’Donnell’s death. However, all these unavoidable acts of God could have been absorbed in the natural tolerance which any season-long campaign is designed to accommodate.
However when you add to the mix totally avoidable factors, such as postponing a game for a Euro 2008 qualifier, or postponing for a Champions League game, then you make a conscious decision to use up your tolerance early in the season.
Knowing how unpredictable the Scottish weather can be, and the general quality of the grounds in the SPL, it was an absolute shocking decision to start using up the scheduling tolerance before the winter had even kicked in.
I also find it highly ironic that much of the fixture backlog was caused by the quality of the Motherwell pitch, when you consider how many times Motherwell have dodged relegation because the otherwise promoted team did not have a ground which meets the SPL standards.

June 7, minus 14 days is.... the 24th of May? Which is the Saturday.
There we go, we are fine for international call-ups. Teams in EURO have to let us have our players for that date. Had they scheduled the extended final round for the 24th it would have been different... perhaps that is why Rangers wanted the final raound postponed that long....

In the event Rangers reach the UEFA final, the last game is 22 May. This date is unaffected by call-ups. If for example Poland have a fixture that day then we can insist on keeping king Artur for out game under FIFA rules.
However, if the SPL followed what Rangers had hoped for, and scheduled the final round for the 24th May (Saturday) then Poland could have insisted on having King Artur for their preparations. Ditto for Sameras et al.

COMMENT-BODY:I notice that the papers have taken to covering the SPL's extension decision with an across the board "Rangers fury at SPL" unashamedly implying that Rangers are the injured party in all this. It seems Rangers are unhappy because the favouritism shown to them does not amount to enough favouritism.
The BBC join in by making sure Martin Bain's rant is given the highest priority possible. His whinge about having to play 4 games over 8 days and this infringing on sporting integrity [stop laughing at the back there!] is helpfully put in a big bright red box to highlight this to all and sundry and ensure no-one misses this gross injustice. Needless to say Peter Lawwel's comments are nothing more than a footnote to the Bain rant and are given no such prominence i.e. no fancy big coloured box to make them stand out. "Old Firm" bias right enough - OLD FIRM FURY
"Rangers pointed out that the last time a Scottish team reached the UEFA Cup final - Celtic in 2003 - a fixture was moved to give them a full week to prepare"
Celtic were indeed allowed to bring a league game with Dundee forward from the Saturday to the previous Wednesday. This did not involve extending the season in any shape or form. In fact this actually disadvantaged Celtic in terms of the SPL as it left only 3 days preparation and rest before the Dundee game instead of the original 7. Celtic were willing to prioritise the UEFA Cup final and so were happy with this arrangement. By all means Rangers, bring forward all the fixtures you want, but the SPL season should not be extended by one minute. Anything else is favouritism and ultimately cheating.
Funnily enough, media coverage of Celtic's fixture congestion that Bain and Murray's media lapdogs use as smoke and mirrors, was just a tiny wee bit different in 2003 CELTIC BRANDED MOANERS
However, we all know that Rangers' dummy spitting act has nothing to do in the slightest with a UEFA Cup final that they haven't qualified for.
So far this season, they have put the rest of us mere mortals to shame with their "sporting dignity" (c) Baldy Bain 2008 - by asking for an extension to the season by not asking for one - WALTER SMITH: RANGERS NOT ASKING FOR AN EXTENSION
Then they throw their toys out of the pram when they don't get the extension they never asked for, or the extension they are given, which they never asked for, is not long enough for their liking.
Dignity or what eh?
This almost makes as much sense as their "FIFA ruined our plans to field Cousin against Panathinaikos by not letting us...em.. sell him" (see Ranger, Daily 12/02/08 "FIFA leave Walter's UEFA Cup plans in tatters")
Which just so happened to be another instance where Rangers wanted to change the rules mid-season to suit themselves. FIFA treated them with the contempt they deserve, incurring the wrath and fury of the Scottish press (cue lots of references to "bumbling FIFA officials" - what about "bumbling Ibrox officials"?)
Is there not some sort of award we can give them for their unparalleled dignity and "sporting integity" (c) Bain in the Backside 2008 ??
Back to the BBC and their Rangers mouthpiece copy:
"Yet Rangers are the only club to be asked to play four games in eight days, so there is no sporting integrity (c) Martin Brainless 2008"
Rangers are the only team to be asked to paly four games in eight days because they are the only club who asked for, and were granted, postponement of one of their own league fixtures and then chose not to reschedule this for dates available in December. They are also the only club who couldn't keep their ground in playable condition due to rain and who failed to beat Hibs and Partick Thistle at the first time of asking. Who does the Brainless wonder blame for that?
"So I don't see what the SPL have done for Rangers in terms of aiding them in European competition"
Em... apart from allowing you to postpone league games on request??
No doubt sensing that Bain was making a bit of an *rse of himself, the BBC did not publish verbatim the following which appeared on the official hun website -
"Why is the season simply not extended to conclude on May 27 regardless?"
Remember the bit about not asking for a season extension? This statement is simply stunning in its arrogance. Five other clubs are supposed to wait for fully 17 days before resuming to suit Rangers? Bain does not explain how extending the season to 27 May would assist them in the UEFA Cup. The "we only want help in Europe" veil slipping a wee bit there.
Other factors Bain does not address in his sheer arrogance and crass stupidity are - international fixtures on 19 May (Greece), 24 May (Holland) and 26 May (Poland).
Oh but wait a minute, that would only disadvantage Celtic so it's perfectly OK.
Although Bain's assertion is clearly absurd, the BBC Still give it credence by referring to it and at the same time very cleverly spinning their phrasing to portray Celtic as the stubborn and unreasonable party -
"Rangers had wanted the season delayed until 27 May, but even delaying it until 22 May disappointed Celtic"
Very judicious use of the word "even" there. Take a bow BBC Spin doctor Ronnie Esplin!!
The Sun leads today with "THANKS FOR NOTHING Rangers fury at run-in nightmare" accompanied by a photo of the Cardigan looking suitably forlorn, and the Evening Times goes with "OLD FIRM FURY OVER SPL 'JOKE'" needless to say Bain is the source of the 'joke' comment. The sub-heading reads "Bain: They've done nothing to help Gers", as if somehow the SPL's remit includes helping Rangers win the SPL.
Admittedly an easy mistake-a to make-a considering the SPL's Rangers pandering through this and other seasons.
Bain's statements in the Evening Times become even more farcical than those released through the Rangers website and their unofficial mouthpieces in the media -
"If these proposals are being seen by anyone in anyt way as a victory for Rangers, then that is an absolute joke"
The biggest joke in this whole scenario is a dead-heat between Bain and the SPL.
Note the interesting reference to "proposals" rather than "decision". Stay tuned folks...
"Yes it's a modest extension, but..."
More than any other team in the history of the Scottish League has been granted.
"There has been talk in certain quarters about sporting integrity of the league and how that had to be retained, but..."
Ooooooh get those claws back in Baldy! The logical interpretation of the above is that "sporting integrity" (c) Bartin Main 2008, can go out the window now.
But for the real pinnacle of shameless hypocrisy, lying, two-faced, cheating [insert similar adjective]... try this for size...
"So far Rangers have been handed back-to-back Old Firm games at Parkhead and a schedule of seven away games out of the last nine league games. I was prepared to accept those fixtures from the SPL as they gave me a rationale behind that scheduling."
Presumably that rationale went something like this:
Blair/Gold:We'll front load the fixtures for you so that you have far more home than away games before the split so that hopefully timmy will be out of sight by the split. If not we can always fix it so you get a couple of home games to finish with.
Bain/Murray: "Sounds good".
You really could not get better personification of sheer bare-faced duplicity and hypocrisy. This lot are going to stop at nothing to get this league title by foul means or fouler. Diving, cheating, withdrawing players from internationals at will, postponing games at will, getting the seasone xtended...they don't know the meaning of the word dignity.

COMMENT-BODY:Spirit of Arthur Lee - more than likely there are still some unpaid debts to be settled by Mordor Utd, could possibly explain why Wattie was keen to offload Boydie in January.
Itzallova - difficult one. Not really. WGS in a second if given the choice. I happened to be at Hampden for the SF tie against Queens. Shambolic performance by both team and management, to watch the 2 Jimmys stand there with arms folded and to watch Sandy Clark organise proceedings from the touchline truly summed it up for me.
I happen to think that WGS at times doesnt help himself with both the fans and the meeja, but considering most of the meeja are boys in blue, can you blame him? I believe he cares and you can't say he doesnt have passion or drive, sometimes tactically naive and he does have his favourites in the team, JVOH for example, but then again so did MON.
He was brought in I believe as a temporary measure by the board, until the next 'real' successor to MON and Stein can be found.
I'd happily trade you Fat Jimmy for WGS any day of the week.

What I will say was that Jackie was made the scapegoat by the majority of the Dons fans at the SF game against Queens and he was given the hook soon after Queens scored there fourth goal, he was booed off the park and I mean properly booed.
A few days later he's released from his contract with a ringing endoresement in his ears from the Suntan man.

Celtic will need to be level on points with rangers and a better goal difference going into this game.
Calderwood has history in this position. In 2003 as Dunfermline manager he said "His father would never forgive him if rangers lost the league at Dunfermline." and on arriving at Ibrox he also said "we're only here for the party".
He will do the same at Aberdeen - total capitulation - and it he wont give a toss what the aberdeen fans want.
I'll state right now the Celtic minded players will either be a) on the bench or b) in the stand.
Calderwood will try his best for rangers.

COMMENT-BODY:From the BBC no less. This is great and, though I hate to say it, easily outshines anything in the Greenock Telegraph. Definitely wins on the alcohol front. You do wonder about the sanity of the victims; at least the accused was off his face
"A man posing as Darth Vader attacked a Star Wars fan, who had founded a Jedi Church, a court has heard.
Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27, from Holyhead, Anglesey, admitted assaulting Barney Jones and cousin Michael with a metal crutch. They suffered minor injuries.
Hughes, who was drunk and dressed in a black bin bag, shouted "Darth Vader!"
Earlier, when Hughes failed to arrive on time, District Judge Andrew Shaw issued an arrest warrant, adding: "I hope the force will soon be with him."
In the event, Hughes turned up and the case at Holyhead magistrates court resumed.
The court heard he had jumped over a garden wall wearing the bin bag before the attack.
Outlining the case againt Hughes, prosectutor Nia Lloyd said Barney Jones had recently started the Jedi church in Holyhead - in honour of the Star Wars' good knights.
It had about 30 members locally and "thousands worldwide".
The cousins had been filming themselves playing with light sabres in the garden before the attack.
Hughes admitted two charges of common assault.
The court heard he has a "chronic alcohol problem" and had drunk the best part of a 10 litre box of wine.
Mrs Lloyd said: "He was wearing a black bin bag and a cape and had a metal crutch in his hand."
Mrs Lloyd said he was shouting "Darth Vader".
She added that Hughes hit Barney Jones over the head with the crutch, leaving him with a headache.
The court heard Hughes could not remember the incident
He then laughed and hit Michael Jones in the thigh, causing bruising.
Both men were left upset by the incident and they believed it was pre-planned.
She added that the pair believe "very strongly in the church and their religion".
Hughes could not remember the incident and only realised what had happened when he read about it in local newspapers, the court told.
Defending, Frances Jones said alcohol was "ruining his life" and he had no idea where he got the crutch from.
The court head Hughes had previous convictions, including affray, assault and disorderly behaviour.
The judge warned Hughes that jail remained a possibility before adjourning for pre-sentence reports until 13 May."

Zander Diamond has been read the riot act by Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood after being photographed sporting Celtic regalia.
The Dons defender posed with a Hoops cake, card and headband during celebrations to mark his 23rd birthday on March 12.
The photographs appeared on his Dumbarton-based girlfriend’s social networking site and, subsequently, in a newspaper.
Diamond, who was born near Dumbarton at Alexandria, has never hidden his Celtic allegiance, but he has been warned by his manager about his future conduct.
Diamond is viewed as a potential Aberdeen captain and has been told there must be no repeat.
Calderwood said: “He put himself in a stupid situation and there are no excuses for it. I have spoken to Zander and I don’t think he will do it again because he’s well aware of my views on the matter.”

There are only 2 teams who are going to win the league each year. Yes, expect a few defeats along the way but given Celtics resources and players at their disposal and taking Rangers lack of funds, you should be sitting comfortably at the top of the league.
This takes me back to my point earlier about WGS being a little tactically naive and playing players not in form.
It's merely my opinion, Celtic have handed TFOD an excellent opportunity to win the league this year when all they should have been concentrating on was getting some of their dignity back after last years debacle.

In my opinion i dont think we need huge changes, with the exception of up front.
In defence I'd like to see a new Centre back and Left back.
In midfield, a top draw central midfielder, who can take games by the scruff of the neck, and help get the ball to Aiden and Naka in good positions. Although i'd like us to secure Kevin McDonald and James McCarthy.
Up front.... I'd probably only keep Scott and Ben Huchinson.
I think i'd be looking at 4/5 new first teamers (subject to players leaving) - and i'd like to see significant finance spent on proven quality. The financial advantage over them is only an advantage if it is being spent...

Also, one lunatic posts:
"In future, there can surely be no question of cancelling matches to assist the national team or for deaths - save very senior Royals or in the event of a major catastrophe."
So a footballer loses his life and it doesn't matter but one of their own inbred icons die and that justifies call-offs? I don't even know why I get surprised anymore, we'd all just be better moving out this 'small' country for good. The decent to scum ratio is far too imbalanced.

COMMENT-BODY:From Gordon Strachan in this week's Celtic View:
"I was watching a sports programme the other week, which I normally don't do. There was a decision for us that got analysed, analysed and analysed.
We go to places and hit the bar four times, or get penalties turned down and it just seems to get swept under the carpet.
When that happens, I realise why I don't watch sports programmes. I had the sound down right enough, but I as well when we played could still see what was going on.
I actually thought that if there were Celtic fans watching this programme, they would be asking for their money back, because it wasn't a balanced view of the game.
I can remember watching another programme a few months ago when we played Hibs. We had nine attempts in the first half and they had two, but they showed the two Hibs efforts and never showed any of ours".
Good on you Gordon - tell it as you see it.

No my friend. Everyone posting on here recently has supported our club due greatly to the machinations of the FOD and their allies but disappointingly the "usual suspects" don't seem capable or willing to put aside their dislike of our manager and/or our board and come on here and offer their support.
We all know who they are.
You bet if we don't win this weekend they'll be out in force within minutes of the game ending.

24 of 44 seems a lot. is that true?

cheers for the managers snippet, I know for a fact the he was educated on what being celtic ment in his first season, but he only knew the half of it, this season he is being properly educated and I have every faith that he will respond to his short-comings after this year. I honestly think we have one of the best managers in europe and all he needed was first hand experience of how biased the scottish game is run. This season is a watershed for our manager and the generation of domination will begin regardless if we win or loose the league this year, given the chance.

COMMENT-BODY:Our cretinous sports media have done another really good anti-Celtic job.
It is now an accepted fact that Aberdeen had a perfectly good goal disallowed on Saturday. They have done their job so well that Celtic fans and even CQN posters seem to accept this as a fact.
The reality is that Celtic were incorrectly awarded a freekick which denied Aberdeen a half-chance. It's like Nakamura's freekick against St Mirren all over again. Make no mistake. If the huns (NOT sectarain despite another example of reinvention by the media) require another Andy Davis-type intervention, Diamond's 'goal' will be used as evidence that 'these things even themselves out'.

I agree with you but would go further. My bif fear is that we are being "set up" for another Dallasesque performance from the referee on Sunday.
If Robson makes am early challenge on a Rangers player akin to his one on Dailly in the last game I belive the referee will be under instructions to send him off.
That also goes for any other Celtic player and I hope Gordon and the bhoys are aware of this and are ready to be "cute" about the way they go about their business.

He has no 'previous' of which I am aware, and I would have picked him ahead of the three referees who have already officiated our games against Rangers this season. In saying that, I used to welcome Stuart Dougal's selection until the last couple of seasons.
My worry is not about the referee for next Sunday but for the other games, when I expect McCurry, Dougal and Clark to feature prominently as the three 'senior' (ie pro-Rangers) officials.
