Leadership is exactly what is lacking Paul. Ostrich like is how I would describe the state of pkay at SPL HQ.
I don't expect any announcement from the SPL about fixtures this week. I believe they are sticking their collective heads in the sand and hoping that the problem goes away next Sunday. Had we lost on Wednesday I'm sure an announcement would have been made.
As long as we keep winning we keep the pressure on.
-
Стахановец mentioned the orcs at FF claiming Celtic played league fixtures following the "official" end of the league season (i.e. the Cup final) in the 1970s.
I would point out that if this is true (a big if - it is highly unlikely that this was the result of any special dispensation from the SFA), then it certainly wasn't due to Celtic asking for any of their own fixtures to be postponed.
Since the FF punters have taken such a keen interest in the history of Celtic FC in the 1970s let's consider a few more stats:
2008
Rangers are expected to complete 14 fixtures in 44 days from Apr 13 to May 24 in all competitions [not including UEFA final god forbid].
This works out at 3.14 days per game
1969 CELTIC RUN-IN
Mar 29 St Mirren (A) 3-0
Apr 1 St Johnstone (A) 3-2
2 games in 3 days
Apr 26 Rangers 4-0 SCF

Apr 4 Motherwell 6-1 L
Apr 6 Dundee 2-1 L
Apr 11 Aberdeen 1-3 SCF
Apr 15 Leeds 2-1 ECSF
Apr 18 St Mirren 3-2 L

6 games in 16 days = 2.66 days per game
Stick that in yer pipe and smoke it Walter Smith.
the longer things go with no official announcement about an extension the more likely one is to be granted IMO. It can then be portrayed as a necessary evil as time ticks away. I still think they are hanging on desperately hoping that the orcs can put it to bed on Sunday and therefore deny any extension request as a token gesture to save face.
-
Paul67,
I suggest the SPL take a leaf out of Murray's book and announce the rearranged fixtures on Thursday....
The view from the ugly mob is they are not kicking up a fuss yet as they are happy to wait another week to release the fixtures.
If we beat us then the two league games can be fitted in anytime.
If they draw/lose then the season has to be extended by a week as less time to schedule.
-
'm getting info that our reserves beat St. Mirren 3:0 tonight (McGowan, McGlinchey & Killen). Bobo did not play but Mizuno, Sno & Doumbe did.
This result leaves us with a good chance of the reserve title.
-
Стахановец - Looking at the above, Celtic played league games after the cup final in 70 and 74. Also in 2002 we beat the sheep 1-0 the week after losing to the huns in the cup final.
Also drew with Motherwell 2-2 3 days after 77 cup final.
However as far as I know this is how the fixtures were originally scheduled. This did not constitute an "extension" to the season. I am certainly old enough to remember 2002 and do not recall any special circumstances around us playing our last league game beyond the cup final. Possibly something to do with finishing the season a bit earlier ahead of the world cup in 2002?

I have long since given up expecting any sensible rational decisions from any of the governing football bodies in this country. My advice is to assume the worst - that way, you tend not to question your sanity as much when you read/hear of Kirk, sorry, Daryll Broadfoot spouting about small-minded Celtic fans afflicted by a combination of non-existent injustice and bigotry.
The best response to these authorities and their love for Rankers is and always has been - win all your games.
-
As I have said before, Blogger !*!*!
More Polish visitors have arrived in town this week hoping to pick up tickets for Sunday, a grandfather, father and son, all hoping to see Celtic.
If you hear of any tickets, let me know.
Gordon J, I have not given up hope that Lex has the wherewithal to do the necessary.
Tony, 1976 ended roughly.
McManus69, indeed.
-
tony bananas:
I don't recall anything either in 2002. 70 and 74 is before my time though!
I would say the SPL has to consider players getting called up for Euro 2008 duty, but Rangers are not represented this year are they...
-
Opening line on Scotsport tonight "Celtic win, but not without a hand from the referee".
The general consensus from the Scottish media seems to be that the referee cheated (with the linesman also implicated).
I welcome the inevitable full and transparent investigation into officiating in the Scottish game that will surely follow this incident.
I was also under the impression we had the ball in the net more than once on Saturday but must have been mistaken as it was not on this evenings "highlights".
Why do I watch this rubbish?

Good shout, however : -
1. You assume that Lex Gold has ambitions beyond his current role. I think he's found his level.
2. Don't be surprised if no decision is made and the fixtures extend by default!
-
Sorry I have missed something I tried to post this last night but Blogger playing up.
When was it decided that Sunday's Cup semi would be played to a finish?
And was this the same for the other semi?
It makes sense but sadly we only seem to copy the Englishs' bad ideas or was it just a one off?
-
STV also did not show the superbly well taken goal from Samaras which was not off-side to my recolection.
-
Paul67,
Are you starting to think something dodgy may be about to occur?
I hope JR & PL are rady for war if it does?
Seville??
-
i think there is more chance of George Bush being voted an honoraru member of George Galloway's respect party than there is of Gold making a decision before sunday's game...
if they win we are a point behind with them having 3 more to play, in those circumstances ,even assuming full points from our remaining games they will only need 9 points from a possible 18, or maybe even 8 if goal difference is working for them...
if we win then on sunday then they might need 14 points out of 18 to equal or points and then it's down to goal difference, but realistically it could be 15 out of 18 they require...
the only assumption that is to be made about the postponed games, is that the spl are waiting until after sunday...given that cannot possibly be for the reasons of ensuring the integrity of the competition, then it can only be to aid rangers attempts to be successful in all of the competitions they are currently engaged in....if they attempt to justify an extension on the basis of helping rangers uefa efforts ,we should challenge that through whatever authorities possible....their remit is to ensure a level playing field for all teams.....they have already overseen the cancellation of 1 rangers game this year to assist them, whilst sitting back and watching motherwell veto an aberdeen request for the same help....
teams who are successful have to prioritise.....that is why big clubs, have big squads...the top 4 in England routinely play reserve players in the lesser english cups, and on regular occasions in the fa cup....
when man utd completed the treble in 1999 they had to play 7 games between may 1st and may 26th in barcelona against bayern...the game 4 days before tht was the fa cup final against newcastle, the single biggest day in the english calender
thats 7 games in 25 days, and that was on top of having played 7 games in the previous month including 2 CL semi finals and 2 FA cup semi finals(with a replay)...so basically 14 game in 7 weeks, none of which were against the calibre of partick th, st johnstone,or st mirren...
and even fergie didn't have the gall to ask for an extension
-
Lex Gold and the SPL will bend over backwards for the huns. Infact they will be so far up Moonbeams (that's the real moonbeam) arse they will be able to see Gordon Smiths Feet.

I can better that comment.
Listening to Talksport in the car tonight. A Scottish reporter, Mark Donaldson? commented
"Celtic won on Saturday, only just as they had 12 man. Ref Brines disallowing a perfectly good goal".
Wouldn't normally annoy me but this rubbish was nationwide.
Anyway are told bad decisions even themself out over the course of a season. On Saturday it took all of 3 minutes as I didn't think there was anything wrong with Killen's knock on to Samaras.
However on both occasions the whistle went long before the ball hit the net!
-
Malceye, fine advice.
WGS, no, I don’t think any decision has been made yet, but the time is getting close.
-
Kevtic
I never saw the details however
Brines is an incompetent fool.
-
It would seem to me that the longer they wait to make a decision the more likely that the Dak Side will "have" to play matches after the season has officially ended.
We shouldn'd kid ourselves on that there isn't frantic behind the scenes shenanigans going on.
The heavy schedule in our lead up to Seville probably cost us the league title that season and maybe even the UEFA Cup as well.
I don't remember the SPL or SFA doing anything to help us in our quest for glory, if fact with the visit to the Death Star less than 48 hours after the away semi final victory (praise be to Henrik) the more paranoid amongst us might think that they weren't exactly hoping to see the sales of Guinness rise, if you know what I mean.
-
both spiers and colqhoun said that the players all stopped in the box when the whistle was blown before the goal was scored

Theres no doubt in my mind that they will simply say that because of Rangers euro commitments etc etc it simply wasnt possible to reschedule and that in delaying an announcement they will simply run out of time meaning an extension of the season will be the ONLY option left to them.
Couldnt make the game on Saturday and saw the Aberdeen "goal" for the first time tonight.
No doubt it wasnt handball and while patently that element of the decision went in our favour its obvious the Celtic defence stopped as the whistle is clearly blown long before the ball reaches Diamond -- both Balde and especially McManus clearly stop trying.
Strangely heard no mention of that fact in any of the press coverage over the weekend...

walter is a danger to his players
after complaining about the hampden pitch on sunday, why did walter allow an obvious injured player "naisy" back on the dangerous hampden pitch ,and then for the player only to collapse and be substituteed
yet this is the man who disreguards his players health and well being
will the players union rep wishart (dont bother coming guys timmys won)step in on behalf of his members who are in serious danger with a manager hellbent on trying to secure a place in history playing a win at all costs mentality reguardless of any damage that is inflicted on his players ,I for one couldnt give a toss ,but this is the man the media are outraged that he didnt get the manager of the year
-
And so.......
April 22
Has any other day of the year been so sweet to Celtic ?
1899
"....came the second 'Old Firm' final of the Scottish Cup....
by all accounts it was a sporting encounter, unlike some later matches between the clubs that have marred the occasion. Despite an injury to Bell, an internationalist bought from Everton earlier in the season, Celtic had slightly more of the play and stout defence rarely allowed Rangers near McArthur. With the score 0-0 at half-time Celtic pressed and McMahon, a deadly and brave header of the ball, rose to connect with a corner in 57 minutes; after 75 minutes Hodge added the second from an allegedly offside position, but Rangers' appeals were dismissed by the referee Mr T. Robertson (Queen's Park). Rangers, holders of the trophy for the past two years, fought hard but Celtic retained the two-goal advantage till the end. "
1981
" Celtic went to Tannadice and won 3-2 over Dundee United, Tommy Burns clinching the title in style by turning two defenders then hitting a drive into the roof of the net. It had been a highly satisfactory campaign in most aspects. An admirable consistency had been attained later in the season and reserve players had broken into the side. The team established three records in the Premier League with the most points in a season (56), the most wins (26)and the most goals scored (84). "

This idea that 'things even themselves out over the course of the season' is absolute nonsense.
You might as well say....'I was bitten by a dog twice this year so my neighbour will be too'

Time for my medication...nurse, nurse!

Did anyone notice that after Celtic's win, Walter Smith started talking about when they "make us" play their games?
This suggests that Rangers are very much pushing for the rules to be changed. In fact, in all this they have displayed about as much dignity and respect for the game as Bernard Hopkins did in getting an extra fie minutes rest against Joe Calzaghe.
Could Celtic not now insist that the timetable is published? After all the club has commercial commitments to make.
Also, if the SPL DID try to change the timetable, could Celtic and the other clubs that are opposed not obtain a court injunction? Surely by doing so, they would effectively force the SPL to confirm the agreed timetable.
Finally, I've never been one to point the finger at Fraser Wishart but has there ever been a union rep who stood by and allowed his members to have a week taken off their holidays?

Queen Liz was 82 yesterday. I'm just disapointed that no-one wished her Maj a happy Birthday.
:-)
-
Lex Gold was on Rangers' books during season 1959/60, but never played for the first team.
We'll be fine, then.
-
1. Paul, do you think Lex may be leaving the decision as late as possible so that the only possible solution is a season extension? Gives them a little more time to get some injured players back too...
2. Unless I was mistaken, from my view on the top tier right behind the "rangers end" goalmouth, I could've sworn that the whistle went on Saturday before the striker took his shot, and that Artur, and perhaps the last defender even, had stopped playing. Artur certainly didn't dive, or react as if he'd lost "a goal". No mention of the two disallowed Celtic "goals" anywhere.
3. I hope "her maj" got a cake that was not to her liking, and was forced to eat it out of politeness sake.
That is all.

a message to all the reporters mentioning celtic's 12th man on saturday
did they not notice that the players stopped and although it wasn't a handball there was no guarantee that a goal was going to be scored
also on paul's point i believe a decision has already been made re extending the league
it has already been decided and the waiting is part of the plan. it makes it more acceptable the more it is talked about and hyped up and we start to expect it to happen and therefore less complaints when it does.
they will hit us with the "there is nothing else we can do and it is too late"
they want to use the help a team in european final angle but obviously cannot use that if they go out in the semi's and as you say paul time is running out
this is when by default they will extend it. the decision has already been made.
no-one also seems to have pointed out that it is not only the SPL who have disgracefully bent over backwards but they have in part had their hands forced by the SFA who have ridiculously let rangers play their cup games out of sync which in turn has hampered on league dates (ie the weekend just passed)
precedent has already been set this season when kilmarnock were told if they drew with airdrie on the monday they would replay on the wednesday with the tie against celtic played on the saturday
why was this scenario not introduced when rangers played partick thistle which would have enabled their scottish cup semi final game to be played on (guess what) scottish semi final weekend
the SFA's role in this is being ignored
rotten to the core

The last day fixtures are starting to concern me. Of course we play Dundee United at Tannadice and I believe that if things are still in the balance we'll be up to the task.
However, the Dark Side travel to Aberdeen. No love lost there usually but....
Remember that Jimmy Calderwood was in charge of Dunfermline when they capitulated so easily.
I would never expect a team to "lie down", I would like to think that profesional players to have too much pride for that (Scott MacDonald on Black Snday for example) but a manager can easily set his team out to be....erm...let's just say not as tight as they usually are.
As Calderwood said prior to the Dunfrmline match, "We're here to enjoy the party"
-
Highland Hoop,
Thats the thing with kids.
They will laugh at anything we do when they are young so it makes us think that we ARE actually funny.
Mine still think I'm hilarious...but I can see the writing on the wall on my eldest.
:~/ its slowly becoming a look of sympathy..
Agreed on the Calderwood situation.
However, the Dons fans seem to dislike Rangers more than us at times so I am hoping they will not accept anything less from their team than 100%.
The more I think about it, despite J Calderwood, I think Aberdeen will be fired up.
-
Paul - "Answer the question, Lex, and sort this matter out, doing so will look great on your CV."
The trouble poor Lex has is that he knows he'll need to make full use of his CV if he does as you suggest, and it won't be a crock of gold he'll be given as a parting gift as he's swiftly shunted out the door.

~Kevtic,
The propagation of miss information, half truths and downright lies spread about our club this season has been unequalled in recent years and is fast approaching a watershed “Thugs and Thieves” moment. I can recall plenty of attempts to unsettle our dressing room in the past, our best performing players have constantly been linked with moves to other clubs and we would only ever being weeks away from losing our manager to a big offer from down south.
This is different, it is open season on Celtic and anything goes.
loumacarisbettingslip,
Both spiers and colqhoun were quite correct in there statements and came across as having absolutely no interest in debating this non story.
Unfortunately, due to previous reporting of the game in our media and beyond it is now generally accepted as fact that the referee cheated Aberdeen out of a point and aided us in our quest for the title. This is very much akin to the non story of Naka/referee cheating in our match away to St Mirren to give us the points earlier in the season.
Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story and all that.
I'm with Kevtic when he said "Wouldn't normally annoy me but this rubbish was nationwide"
It's getting out of hand.

Paul67,
surely any rescheduling requires consultation with with the SPL board, including ourselves. I dont think they have a leg to stand on, and I for one would be satisfied if Celtic gave up Europe next year by taking the SPL/SFA to court.
-
would I be right in saying any club seeking legal recourse against its national authority is banned from european competition, and does this include all other clubs under the national authorities jurisdiction ??
-
canamalar:
I am sure this kind of action was threatened by a Portuguese team within the past few years due to being relegated for something, and it may well be that the whole country is banned from European football while it is ongoing. Imagine that, our action costing Rangers that vital CL money. They could threaten to expel Celtic from the FA, but that would also cost them for obvious reasons, and if heels were dug for long enough the men in blue could very well have to strip-mine themselves just to keep the banks away from the door.
It would be a very messy scenario.
Did someone not mention that of the five chairmen on the SPL board, three are Celtic, Dundee United and Hibernian, all teams who would have no reason to see Rangers and Motherwell play the final game after everyone else, where they would both have an advantage.

Call me naive but,as much as i am willing to believe that the powers that be would dearly love to aid rangers cause,i just don't think they will extend the league,it would be the most blatant form of cheating, and would leave them wide open to litigation.Having said that,if,indeed, they do take such action,Celtic MUST go after them with all the force they can muster, too often we have allowed slights against us to go unpunished,in this regard,i do think that the reference from PL some weeks ago, with regard to just this subject was a warning to the decision makers.
-
one star means more 00:13. Why not get started of Fraser Wetfart?
thats him advocating 1 weeks less holiday for his members.
I also recall him jumping to the defence of Bentfoot and Thompson after their diving at Ibrox. Cheating which costs Lee Naylor and Arthur Boruc bookings, which in turn may hit them financially via internal agreements for disciplinary points or missing games and win bonuses.
Imagine this scenario at work.
2 sales guys in an office. sales guy 1 guys steals some of sales guys 2 revenue (impacting on his salary). Sales guy 2 complains vehemently to his boss (equivalent to the ref on the park). The boss says he never seen it (fair enough), sales guy 2 continues his protest and the boss says "shut it or your be disciplined". He continues and gets reprimanded by his boss. A disciplinary hearing is called and he invokes his right to be accompanied at the hearing by his Union Rep.
As it transpires, the Union rep 1) supports the actions of sales rep 1 (when evidence is available that this act occurred) and 2) supports the actions of the manager in disciplining sales rep 2.
Can't touch me I'm part of the Union indeed!!

(Winner will receive 1 ticket for dinner at the acclaimed "Evening with Michelle")-
"Zander Diamond scored a goal which would have been the jewel in Rangers' crown had it not been for Ian Brines, playing a Cary Grant-esque role in stealing the Dons' star of India. Balde and McManus were but culpable bystanders as Nicolson cut through the hapless Celtic defence for Diamond to drill the ball past the bedazzled Boruc. Diamond's goal was ruled to be no more than mere cubic zirconia"
OR
"The Stadio San Nicola is out of this world, in as much as it resembles the mothership fantasised over by Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of a Third Kind. The Tartan Army must have resembled Extra-Terrestrial beings to the Azzurri; bedecked in tartan, Glengarry hats and shuffling like aliens after a day on the supposedly prohibited batter."

Paul67,
I think you have done a great job with this site. I think the web has been positive with sites like this bringing like minded people with a common purpose and maintaining decency. Who is policing the vile sites such the obvious one used by the other mob? I understand there is currently some vile racist and threatening comments about one of our players on their site. I think such forums are dangerous in pulling together the worst in a clubs support and in allowing them a structured place to create "campaigns" which have been evident over the last few seasons. My view is each club should maintain an interest in these sites.

Celtic Tv showed young Aiden receiving his awards last night. Fantastic.
The comment about the hun nacho, were sublime.
They showed a clip of his talents throughout this season and all I can say is, "The Bhoy is MAGIC". Anyone who seen these clips were fortunate to see the most skillfull player, on the ball, in britain. No doubt about it.
If he was playing in theepl, he would be called the best in world.

The wait for re-arranged fixtures for Rangers only means one thing to me.
I have no doubt at all that Rangers will be aided by the SPL and the SFA and allowed to play fixtures when they choose depending on the outcome of their tie against Fiorentina.
Who cares, because the only thing Celtic can do is to make sure they take maximum points from all their remaining league fixtures, and hope that Well, DeeUtd and Hibs all take points off a tired and injury-hit Rangers.
Celtic will get no fairness or favour from the Scottish football authorities, so let's not lose any sleep over it.
On another note, I feel very sorry for the beautiful city of Florence.
Do you think that Scotland's Shame will be queuing up to visit the Uffizi?
Fair enough, it's not a sight-seeing trip, but someone I don't think the Carabinieri will take any rubbish from Scotland's Shame.

Have I missed something or has Fraser Wishart supported the call for his members to forgo 1 week's holiday to benefit his Govan favourites?
Can't he be called to accounmt at some labour tribunal for failing to support Artur, who was booked because of blatant cheating by one of his other member's, whom he subsequently supported. At the very least he should be unceremoniously kicked out of his position by the TUC for failing in his primary duty of care to his membership and pandering to cheating.

parkheadcumsalford,
is THG in the union, usually a good starting point, if not then he is representing his members an action the TUC will condone fair or not. If he is in the union then it is up to THG to seek justice from the TUC, but on my experience its unlikely as the unions have become just another corporate tool.

Today's other birthday Bhoy is Hoopslegend Dion Dublin.
The versatile veteran centreforward and saxophonist gets to share his cake with Kaka, Pope Alexander VIII and Immanuel Kant and ML2.

Happy birthday to WizenedGeriatric (if one really believes the 1950 dateline!). BTW, people born in that year tend to like Cliff Richard.

Cheers. I'll reply tonight.

Canamalar - agree with your point on Unions nowadays.
However, NO union would take the risk of referal to the TUC unless they were 100% sure that they would win.
If the players object...which many of them will do. From memory, one of the unscheduled games is against St Mirren who are on record as declaring that they have a team holiday booked immediately after the close season. Should this be the case and they believe that their represenative is behaving in a bias manner, they can ask for an alternative rep from within the Union to step in.
Someone who may not share the same agenda towards any particular club and uphold the ethos of the Union to support the players.
Now there would be an embarrassment!
It might let their current leader (the hun hatton) move aside to pursue his media aspirations (he fulfills all the criteria to be successful in Scotland! What do you mean future leader of the SFA??) and afford the members proper representation.
Hail Hail commrades in arms!!

Celticlover- do you agree that 'MZs decision to leave Celtic was a good one'?
I don't know what went wrong with MZ- except to say he didn't seem to recover from the departure of the Greatest Living Welshman.

An excellent example of the sheer unashamed hypocrisy of the media reporting on this issue.
Ant-Celtic agenda anyone?
Pro-Rangers pandering?

On the matter re Wishart.
Surely every club has a union rep and Wishart is only the secretary/full time rep. He will have to be elected every year or so.
If he shows bias towards one team then it is up to the membership to replace him when he in due for election...

Bhass Bhoy, I suspect Lex is dithering. He alone cannot force through an extension and I believe his board are unlikely to accommodate an extension with things the way they are.
Daveinlondon, on the day of the 6-2 game a visiting foreman was in charge in Mossend. While we were all at the game, many were hoping to finish their shift early, as the usual boss would perhaps have done, and catch the game on TV.
As it was the visiting foreman was not a football fan and delayed proceedings for an unheard of 10 minutes past the hour. As the hooter went they returned to their cars to hear Celtic were 3-0 up.
I don’t believe the visiting foreman was ever invited back.
McManus69, thank you for your kind words. The clubs cannot police sites, even if they tried, there would be voices determined not to comply.
Web sites reflect the communities they emerge from; while I have stayed out of the recent debate prompted by The Herald, some points have resonance.
Winningemmell, Happy Birthday.

on the subject of the possible extension of the league program for TFOD, then surely now there are just two scenarios left with regards Rankers.
1. they qualify for the UC Final
2. they don't
surely there is therefore an opportunity to put into the public domain the two what if scenario solutions i.e if they reach the final then this is the schedule and if not then here's the schedule.
I am obviously too thick or something else is afoot for this not to be published.
I believe the ostriches will continue to stick their heads in the sand in the hope that it will all just go away.
come on bhoys, win them all and let's see the impartial adjudicators squirm as they try to suggest that this is all for the greater good of scottish football.

faithfulthru&thru, exactly! What on earth are they waiting for? They only need Plan A and Plan B. No other club in the league is affected by anything other than TFOD's situation so it should be very easy to set out the alternatives.....with the proviso of course that both A and B finish on the 18th of May.
I do think that they are hoping that this will go away on Sunday by virtue of the good guys dropping points. They do not want to be seen to be extending the season but they do not want to upset Rangers (because they are scared of them as much as they favour them) by coming out now and categorically stating that they won't. I bet there is a lot of talking being done with St Mirren etc. Maybe they'll be asked to interrupt their holiday and come back and play in their flip flops

I don't get this idea that a team should be supported and assisted in every way if they make it into a euro final.
Thinking about it logically
