I respect your opinion, mate, of course, but I am not saying I am a better manager than Strachan, only that we should HAVE a better manager than Strachan.

Your comment about "whatever he does he upsets people" has merit, but only insofar as what bothers us isn't everything he does but that everything he does IS THE SAME.

I for one would have been delighted today had we gone 3-5-2, or even 4-3-3. Anything to break the montonous cycle of his 4-4-2 which other managers know so well they could counter it in their sleep.

I refer you to my posts concerning the Aberdeen cup defeat. A few weeks before the first we played them off the park in the league. Calderwood adjusted his tactics accordingly for the cup game, amongst them giving McGeady a man marker in Alan Maybury. Our most creative player was almost totally marked out of the game that day.

The return match at Parkhead? Strachan fields the EXACT SAME TACTICS, putting McGeady up against the EXACT SAME PLAYER with, predictably, the exact same result. He didn't even have the wit to swap McGeady and Nakamura, which would at least have given Maybury something else to worry about.

That's why I've no faith in him, those games right there, if for no other reason ..... and there are, alas, plenty of other reasons .....

If we can just look past the WGS bashing just now lads and get behind the team.

exactly right if you cant vary your tactics when the existing tactics are not working then what hope is there

the fact that they keep saying that there is nothing wrong and that we are playing well worries me more

if he cant see that we've been crap last 5 games then there is no hope

its his im right you are all wrong attitude taht gets me

    james forrest;

    fair point well made.

i do think, however, that in order to have a correct attack/defence balance we are better served by 4-4-2. a 4-3-3 is marginally better giving us an extra striker who should be more capable of scoring than a midfielder.

if 3 subs are used today, i would expect sno, samaras and another to be used. having watched mizuno in the reserves, i'd love to see him come on today.

but that's up to strachan to decide ;o)

  • At 13/04/08 14:03, Blogger mncelt said…

    Mornin all

Good to see both Robson and Hartley out thee today. Scott Browns suspension is a blessing in disguise. He would have been out there again if WGS was able to pick him.

Surprised to see Skippy though. The Skippy-JVoH partnership has given us nothing for weeks.

If we're down 1-0 with 5 mins to go maybe he'll throw on Mizuno to save the day. Hurchinson's failure to do so last week sees him dropped from the subs bench.

    Rant over.

    Come on the Bhoys.

Enjoyed your earlier post, Ian i B.

We all want Celtic to do well but how we differ is in our response when things are not going as we want. So ask yourself a simple question: What helps the team/Club more when we are not winning/playing well; is it continued support or continued criticism? By all means decide that you want rid of x,y or Strachan but surely now is not the time to be negative. Rangers glean unquetioned support from all areas, Celtic can only rely on us fans. Don`t let them/us down.Be positive and start today.
This is actually the last post on tgw previous topic. Seems appropriate fr here, though. Good start and good work from Caldwell and Mick for the goal.

Sometimes I've been asked by one man or another
Why do I follow Celtic, why do I take the bother
But he must be a fool, who would ask me such a question
So then how can I explain, try to tell him what he's missing
    And it's 1, 2, 3, Celtic for me
Not a team in the world like the Celtic

If a man has never seen Glasgow Celtic when they're playing
He mustn't have a soul, mustn't know what he is saying
And if he's never heard when the Celtic crowd is cheering
Then there's nothing I can say but he must be hard of hearing
    And it's 1, 2, 3, Celtic for me
Not a team in the world like the Celtic

When Celtic are in Parkhead I am proud to be there with them
Soon they play again but sadly I do miss them
They're the team for me, their could never be another
And then some fool wil ask, why do I take the bother
    And it's 1, 2, 3, Celtic for me
Not a team in the world like the Celtic

So if anyone should ask and you want to give a reason
Tell him go and find himself a ticket for the season
And when he's been to Parkhead and seen the Celtic playing
Well it won't be very long until you will hear him saying
Why do I take the bother
    And it's 1, 2, 3, Celtic for me

    Bit more committed today

3-1 up and deservedly so. We're playing reasonably well with the midfield winning a greater number of 50-50's than in recent weeks. Our passing is also decent despite the pitch.

Same old problem though and another statistic for the manager. Motherwell have had one attack and one goal. Hartley lost the ball cheaply in the middle of the M'well half but Caldwell created the opportunity for them by selling himself on the halfway line. Really poor defending again in our central defence.

Our defending needs a 2 goal cushion. Fortunately we've got it.

    HT Motherwell 1-3 Celtic

Champion first half from the Bhoys. Why why why can we not play like this every week. There has been a clear difference in tactics today with Robson and Hartley shoring up the midfield and lot's of high balls played into their box. All 3 of our goals have come from crosses into the box rather than us trying to walk the ball in with Aiden and Naka. The more direct approach has paid dividends.

Our 1 piece of slack play resulted in a goal for them which just about sums up our luck in recent weeks.

Let's get back out and finish this game off in style

Player ratings - 10 for everyone except Naylor and Hinkel who get 9. Boruc will be cold out there as he has had nothing to do.

Much better from the Bhoys. Hartley and Robson give us greater stability in the middle, although there still seems to be a bit of a gap between defense and midfield which Well could exploit.

Interesting to see Freeland's attitude to dissent- an enraged shout (to no-one in particular) by big Jan is deemed a yellow card offense. But seven Motherwell players surrounding the ref in an aggressive manner is not noteworthy.

Also Reynolds' dreadfully cynical hack at Robson on the wing merited just a wee ticking off.

Had the referee fancied a bit of hunnery he could have disallowed the first goal (either a foul on the keeper or the handball) and given a penalty for the Mothers - would have been a soft one but he'd have got away with it.

    Half and half.

I am a big Paul Hartley fan,

But he was the man at fault for the Well goal.

The rest was down to great play from the two well players.

My question was in regard to the last 6 or 8 games.

If you still think that he has been poor, then obviously your opinion is based on previous, rather than recent contributions.

Having said that, think Hartley, and Robson, have been far more effective than our midfield in our most recent games.

We still need to drop Naka in these games.

And have either Sno or Brown in these games.

I know Brown is suspended, but I have long been an advocate of three hard players(Brown,Robson,Hartley,Sno,perm 3 from 4) and either Aiden or Naka.

The two of them are a luxury we cannot afford.

Everybody seems to think the other coaches attack one of our "weak" fullbacks.

But they are actually attacking the lack of midfield cover for the fullbacks.

the fullbacks always loook stronger and play better when they have genuine midfielders playing in front of them.

The old inside lefts and insight rights,if you prefer.

naka's been excellent today. he's not in the team to tackle. but every tackle he attempted successfully held up play and prevented motherwell progressing. his passing and ball retention has been first class. and on a pitch such as this.

I agree he has went missing second half but was influential in the first.
He needs to be more agressive.

    Good performance today.

Work commitments mean I will miss the game on Wednesday, so good luck to the Bhoys. Let's give the huns a fright and see how they react.

considering our recent form, saturdays result and the fact we were away to the third placed team with a great home record, i would say that was a great result

    robson and hartley worked well

Celtic should protest strongly about the state of that pitch today. It is not in a fit state to host professional football.
