Nakamura ate my racism and used it as inspiration

If Carlos Cuellar had not intervened with an attempted Hand of God, but what will surely become known as the Hand of Dog moment, Shunsuke would have scored two fabulous goals against Rangers, a team he has often been accused of failing to perform against.

After being subject of a racist banner displayed by Rangers fans during one of their recent consolation games for being knocked out of the Champions League, Nakamura answered in the most effective fashion possible with the best goal Celtic have scored against Rangers since Shaun Maloney hit the same spot in 2005.

The racist slur, of course, was not limited to Japanese people, but treated a significant portion of Asia as the one entity, so it is perhaps not surprising that Karma kicked in so quickly.

Paul you asked for a European home performance. We got exactly that.

Brilliant last night. Watching from my living room the atmosphere sounded much more intense than usual and it was fantastic the way Celtic found the stomach for a fight after the equalising goal.

Well done to Gary Caldwell for persevering and pushing forward till the end.

Barry Robson must retain his place.

It is strange the way things are working out. There are a lot of fans who want a Hinkle O'Dea McManus Wilson back four. This might well happen due to GCs spat with Weir.

It was also good to see our bhoys getting stuck into the Rangers players at the end. Im not advocating violence on or off the field but I amoungst others have accused our players of lacking a bit of bite in the past so I have to say I enjoyed watching us refusing to lie down to their players AFTER the game as well as during it.

Sorry if I am going over old ground, havent read comments since 1.00am but why did Jvoh not take the penalty.

If he does not have the nerve in that kind of game then Scot, despite missing should be our regular pen taker. The bhoy has bottle and plenty of it.

    Hail, hail

Sober now, but still delighted with that result.

Celtic played as a real team last night. You could see that throughout the match. They were playing for each other and for the manager and for the fans.

Nobody can say this team don't have bottle.

    Outstanding.

They've proved they can pull big results out when required. Keep doing it.

And hopefully, injuries and red cards for Rangers important defensive players will cost them points against other teams.

My personal highlight of last night was the Setanta interview with the Carmyle Cardigan after the match.

He was visibly gutted, his eyes very misty with near tears.

More than anything, I just wanted a response from Celtic last night. We got it, lost it, then got it again in the dying seconds of the match and subsequent post-match brawl.

The first half was a delight, as powerful a response from a Celtic side in a game against them as I have seen in many year. 1-0 at HT was a travesty of justice. 3-0 would have been more reflective of our dominance.

Rat-boy's goal was not unexpected but I became instantly concerned because it seemed to knock the stuffing out of our Bhoys. Chins hit the chest and the lack of leadership became evident.

Naka stepped into the fray once again proving that although form may be temporary, class is permanent. Despair with penalty, it was all wrong from the start.

I was aghast when the MOTM was taken off, convinced that either Hesselink of McDonald should have walked. I stand corrected.

My overriding concern about our side is that, as a team, a collective, we seem fractured. Our rivals are low on skill and technique but it cannot be disputed that they are a team. You get the impression they would kill for each other. I couldn't say that about Celtic but the post-match brawl might address that.

It was the first time I saw McManus stare the opposition down, as a team we did not look intimiated any more. Revitalised?

We may not win this league, change in the summer may be inevitable, but I expect Celtic to push on into the last five games with the same fury and drive we witnessed in the minutes before and after the final whistle.

It was a proud, defiant and deserving victory last night. Please keep it going.

The attitude and fight of the players last night was the difference.
Robson and Hartley got right in about them and let them have a taste of their own medicine.

Rangers don't like it up them and the cheating play acting and time wasting worked against them.

If Novo played for anyone but them he would be front page news every week.
    He is a loathsome,sneaky,cowardly cheat.

Whoever is free from the inevitable levelling up of suspensions will need to be as strong. They will be even more up for the next game.
McCulloch had 3 final warning warnings last night and still no red card.
I would take the chance to give Balde and O'Dea a run on Saturday.

Finally I was actually proud of McManus last night.
I have often thought he isn't a captain, but the way he got stuck in at the end last night showed how much he cares.

Whether we win the league or not, a big thanks to the bhoys for last night's performance, PWOULD is how I was for the whole 90 minutes, and that was before JVOH's winner. Definitely thee highlight of the season so far for me.

And Barry Robson's crunching challenge on Christian Daily after 15 seconds, thank you Barry, not quite as good as Naka's goal, but brilliant just the same as it set the tone for the whole game.

Now that Gordon has proved he can beat a Wattie 11, I'm no longer so sure we would be better off without him.

Thank you for your email. Please accept my apologies for the unacceptable terminology used by Kenny Hodgart in his article of last Sunday.

We are currently looking at why this reference was included in the first place and how it slipped through our production system. We are also formulating a response for the newspaper next week. In the meantime I can only sincerely aplogise and assure you we are treating this matter very seriously.

From my seat in Block 113, I could clearly see an object thrown by the huns at Barry Robson as he was about to hit a corner. Couldn't say for definite, but I think it was a potato. The linesman DEFINITELY picked it up.
If there are repercussions for us re. the coin throwing, then I would hope that the same is due for them. The linesman MUST step forward and have Clarke put it in his report.

    Vargas,

As far as I am concerned the majority of those "supporters" got exactly what they deserved - not being able to see and celebrate the winning goal along with the rest of us!

A wee section on Kenny Clark from the big man:

So that was Kenny Clarks last Old Firm game before he hangs up his whistle at the end of the season.
I suspect most people already know my feelings about Kenny. Lets be honest they're not favourable.
He always tried his best but quite frankly, I just dont think the guy was ever good enough to referee at the top level in Scotland. He wasn't alone in that mind you.
Now he's going I'd like to take the opportunity to say that the game is going to miss him.
    I'd like to, but I can't.

Did anything ever happen between them? I like the way he tells it as it is.

speaking of Karma and Asia -

I am now based in Phnom Penh and had to misfortune to share a bar with 3 huns watching the game last night.
One fortunate thing was the bar is split in 2, they were watching downstairs on a big screen and me upstairs.

I arrived just after ko, the bar owner had told me there were a few r#$%^&* fans coming into watch the game.

I was hoping that they would be decent huns and we could have had a bit of banter/discussion.

Oh no..i arrived in the place to see some guy screaming at the screen..his eyes nearly bulging from his head...no meaningfull discussion with this guy I thought.

I moved to the upstairs part of the bar where i watch the game alone and mostly in silence.

I could view them and hear them from where i was sitting. I cannot believe some of the things they were screaming..and i mean screaming, fenian fkrs...papist so and sos, japanese c...s.

What an embarrasment to be Scottish.

Karma indeed when big Jan nodded home.

ssm from last night - sorry to dwell on the negative but since I am supposed to be ashamed...

If you think JVOH was anything other than very very poor then you are deluding yourself. He contribured nothing other than being in a lucky position at the right time. He contributed very little. My GET HIM OFF comment was for the benefit of the team. The fact that he ended up making an important contrivbution to the result was in my opinion, due purely to extremely good fortune on his part

Early in the first half the ball was knocked back across the face of goal only inched away from him and Jan made absolutely no effort to get to the ball for which would've been a certain goal. Sutton, henke or even Skippy would've moved heaven and earth to get that ball. I was disgusted with his complete lack of heart/bravery in that situation. A long long way short of what is required in any game never mind again TFOD to save our season.

Then there was the stupid yellow card. OK it was a kick at Neddy but I fancy that would've been a straight red at Ibrox or with one of the more hardcore MIBs.

I say this not to rain on the parade but with big games coming up he was a passenger tonight and Sammy looks like he has the hunger to do a better job.

That said - still enjoying the result and haven't read a papaer yet!

  • At 17/04/08 11:18, Blogger TheTokenTim said…

    Paul,

With regards to Naka, you are spot on.
I said after the game at Ibrox that I felt that, for the first hour at least, Naka had his best game against them. Last night he surpassed that.

Andreas' movement down the right hand side seemed to give Naka opportunity to roam inside a bit more and this was evident from his position when he struck that fanstastic shot.

I would love to see Naka given a free role to roam as he pleases in the hole between our midfield and forwards. I honestly think he could cause some serious damage in this "position", esp against the rigid formation which rangers play.

I thought it was good to see Mark Wilson actually get ahead of Aiden and give him an outlet as well as take a player away from him - something which Lee Naylor seemed unwilling or perhaps unable to do.
AH did likewise down the RHS with Naka.

Barry Robson was very good - strong, aggressive, calm and composed on the ball whilst also making some good runs attacking them, esp. in the 2nd half - exactly what we have needed in that position. That's why I was a tad upset when WGS subbed him. Obviously it appears that the decision was vindicated, but I could debate that.
Regardless,BR has dome more than enough in the last 2 games to suggest he must be a first choice for the foreseeable future

I think I could probably go throw the whole team, but will refrain from doing so.

Suffice to say, apart from a wobbly 10 mins before and after they scored, we played and acted like a team, something, that for me, has been missing in the last couple of months.

    WELL DONE THE BHOYS!

1 down 5 more to go.

In response to the topic posted - hopefully the intended racial slur will not translate and will be ignored by the media in Japan (particulalry as it is Koreans that breed a particular type of dog that is regarded as a delicacy and not Japanese - and so the connection is tenuous and not evident).

And back to football - If it is the case that weir and cuellar will miss the next game, what options do they have, to play alongside Dailly in the centre; I'd say that they will really struggle and JVoH will be pivotal in dominating a weaker CB pairing. Is it just me or was that an even more defensive starting line-up with two RBs and Daily, an additional defender in midfield. Regardless of the 'anti-football' formation it was clear that naylor and caldwell, in particular, were instructed before the game to be more patient and play the ball to feet and via the midfield.

We will beat them again if we are committed to playing this style of football. Let's put the pressure on them and see how they can respond.

    paul67.. thanks for reply.

I saw a heated discussion between strach & his captain str8 after the penalty miss. Mcmanus ended it by violently throwing his drink canister at the feet of strach.

Mick then went straight to robson and put an arm round him.

The next thing strach did was sub robson!

Wonder if anyone else saw this.

(can I say Im delighted to see that kind of passion & determination....strach's big failing for me is that he tries to 'overcoach'.....coaching is fine but you must combine it with passion and a physical presence)

Finally can I also say Ive been a critic of Caldwell..... so credit where its due... I THOUGHT CALDWELL WAS IMMENSE LAST NIGHT!

    Morning All...

The day seems especially bright and sunny and I get to give a GIRUY to the knuckle draggers in my work.

Couple of points on last nights game.

    1) was surpised at Barry Robsons subtitution at the time. However WGS position was to do whatever it takes to get us the result on the night. IT WORKED so maybes I should stop being the professional know it all who once won the premiership on Football Manager 2005.

    2) Wellcom to Celtic Barry Robson.I am convinced this guy will go on and play a major part at Celtic...might be too late this season (although hopefully we can win all our games and see what unravells in Mordor). His first minute dunt on Dailly set the tone for the rest of the game and our subsequent handling of the greetin' faced thugs at the end of the match showed that we can handle them physically...there really is not much to fear!

Also - for the more knowledgable bloggers out there.

    1) If Cuellar got a red last night and Weir after the game - why is Cuellar out of our next game with them, yet Weir appears to be out of the SF at the weekend?

    2) I never noticed this at the game last night (too focussed on events on the park)....was the Scotlands Shame banner removed at the request of the huns? If so why?? is this more offensive than the recent slurs on the Catholic Faith (Voodoo no worky) and Japanese People (highlighted by Paul in this article/thread)that have been thrust upon the world in their banners?

    Hail Hail

If Caldwell and Weir both have 1 match bans does that mean that Rangers central partnership miss our next game against them as its their next league game?

Are the SFA going to look into the events further as even though Weir has his hand around Gary's neck Gary throughs a tame punch at him. He could be in more trouble.

I'm amazed that wee Bazza has manged to come through that unscathed as he as far as I could tell started the whole stramash.

Also where are the misery boys?

Oh What a night! (Is that a song title? :-))

Nakamura's goal was just fantastic; sheer class. His overall play was great too, hopefully he will now have the belief and confidence to show much more of the same or more in future games against Rangers. Well done Naka!

Gary Caldwell for some reason gets a lot of stick on here, but I thought he was superb last night and was my MOTM, just shading it from Naka.

Robson showed plenty of skill and dig, as did Hartley. Last night we had a midfield with a good combination of skill and dig and I was thrilled that we bossed the midfield. McGeady was terrific last night but could still learn a lot from Naka. The chap on here (Sorry, I don't know who said it) who said that Naka is much more economical or 'cost-effective' in his use of the ball has a great point, but I still admire McGeady enormously, who has both skill and dig in spades.

A pity that McDonald missed the penalty, but kept his head up and had a good game otherwise.

JVoH is an enigma and I'm not sure what to say about him, except thanks for the late goal big man!

A shame that Naylor got injured, but thought Wilson did well when he came on.

I think Samaras is a great player with loads of skill, a great footballing brain, a cool head under pressure, and can also mix it into the bargain. I sincerely hope he stays!

Our Captain showed that his nickname of 'Mick'is well-deserved; not just a humorous reference to the wrestler, but a compliment on some of the characteristics he shares with the original Mick. Captain Courageous indeed.

A Big thank you to the whole team last night for their great combination of FIGHT, SKILL, SPIRIT, ENTHUSIASM, and RESISTANCE.

Finally, a big thank you to Gordon Strachan. I was at the Motherwell Game during one of my trips back up to Glasgow to see my parents (I live in Hampshire), and at the point where he substituted McDonald rather than JVoH for Samaras, I just thought "Strachan must go!" However having calmed down from that defeat and reflected on things I think that Strachan must be allowed to continue his good work, just like Sir Alex at ManU. I think bringing Lennon in to help with the teams attitude and motivation shows that Strachan is a student and a learner, and I think we may be starting to see the fruits of this appointment.

I think playing Rangers next on St. George's day is a great day to rub their Union Jack noses right in it!

We still may not win the league this year, but I am glad we are showing now that we will fight to the death!

    Yours in Celtic,

    Jim.

Last night the fat lady was unceremoniously shoved exit stage left. It is not yet your time dear. Besides, maybe, just maybe, you might have the wrong song sheet.

Bide your time lassie – bide your time.

Rangers had to postpone their mock huddle. In doing so ‘jewel in the crown’ spat the mother of dummies for all the world to see how ‘quintessential dignity’ deport themselves when a wee smitchin of adversity parts their collective goolies.
Tut Tut – not what you’d expect from your everyday mason now is it?

Couldn’t help feeling a degree of sympathy for wee Nacho Novo.

His enthusiasm for the cause, his determination, his guile, his attitude, he has them all in an abundance, but somehow, no matter how hard he tries, and no matter how many tattoos he adorns his Adonis like physique with, he is never, ever, not a hope in the hell he will no doubt one day call home – will he ever be a hard man. The man is a boy dick. Always will be. But I just can’t help but admire the way he tries to claw his way above his natural gutter. Shame he’ll never ever know what it is to be a true knuckle scrapper.

The Boo Bhoys at Barry’s substitution – were you booing when the ref blew time up.
    Just curious.

I am reading an explanation on other sites that states that, Since Weir was sent off for violent conduct, his match ban is for all competitions and he will, therefore be able to sit out the SC semi-final against St. Johnstone. However, Cuellar's was not a violent offence, so his suspension will apply to their next league game against us. Unless they re-arrange and squeeze in another league game before then, presumably.

Any ref types or rule geeks able to confirm this?

I haven't been up to scratch healthwise for a couple of weeks.
I knocked back a Hospitality invite,And I ain't got Setanta,so I decided to listen to the Radio, crap commentary on BBC,so switched off after five minutes. Why can't BBC get a Commentator Like the old Rugby man Bill McLaren, anyway I decided to read a book until 9-45pm,then went on to CQN,truthfully not having heard the score,It was a revelation,I read every post,in the first half, when Naka scored,I opened a bottle of Cognac, and had the proverbial large glass, from what I was reading,Celtic were on top,and by a mile,it read that we were actually playing good football.

The second half, when I read that Novo was coming on,The thorn in Celtic's side in Many a game, then he goes and scores a goal, then the missed Penalty,Cueller getting sent off helped, but depression was setting in,A bit heavy handed on the pouring of the Cognac, and at the gibbering stage when we went passed the 90th minute,I'm inclined to gibber when I've had a few. Then the sublime moment of it all,WE HAD WON,I've never felt better for weeks.

If, at 9-45pm I had switched on the tele updates,I could have got the result, but I would have missed all the excitement of the updates from CQN,First time I've experienced that,I'm usually at the game.

Thanks to all the posters who were on duty last night,I don't think you realise the smashing job you do.

Hinkel and Wilson also gave me scope for confidence.

I am no fan of Smith but thought he spoke well before and after the game.
Novo is becoming increasingly detestable. I believe that ,in his heart, he KNOWS the Hun support wil never really take to him and he is selling his soul by adopting cheap gestures to endear himself to his masters. It never works as Novo will discover.
Incidentally, doesn`t it feel even better today? The fire has been replaced by a very, very happy glow. Hope the team aren`t the same! Keep the fire raging, Bhoys!

In the little we've seen of him BRobson looks like he could have the same impact on our midfeld as Murdo Mcleod, both in terms of his general hustle and giving the opposition the hurry-up but also his goal threat.

He must keep his place when SB finishes his suspension. He was our best player up until his baffling substitution.

I wouldn't expect you to be a fan of Smith. I'm not either.

My point was that it was good to see him hurting. How many times have we seen him put one over on Celtic and look very smug about it.

He and his team are under pressure now, they aren't getting everything their own way, so I think the media should be asking difficult questions like 'Why have you got a team of defensive minded cheats on the park?'

He's managing the talents he has to the best of his abilities so fair play to him, but I did enjoy the schadenfreude of seeing his eyes fill up after a late winner for the Celtic.

STANDING UP...and not shedding any tears over the Cardigan's pain

    McGrory,

MAYBE the discussion you saw take place between Mick and Gordon was simply the team manager informing the team captain about the tactical change he was about to make to the team? This was MAYBE then simply relayed to the player about to be subbed ("arm round Robson"). What do think? Is this a possibility? Or does it always have to be something sinister, and ideally critical of Gordon, for you?

Your negativity astounds me, but (as it is constant) sadly does not surprise me.

ssm - can't argue with going 3 up front against the ten men. I would've been more inclined to take JVOH and put Robson into a more advanced position but the three up front worked so happy days.

Assuming we won't be going 3 up front from the start against them on Sunday week , I would like to see Sammy get a start.

Wasn't overly impressed with Skippy either, there is an element of the heidless chicken about him but at least gives 100% and set the goal up magnificently. His penalty wasn't too bad, if the keeper goes the wrong way he looks like Zico but he was unlucky enough that a supposedly injured keeper made a leap that Carl Lewsi would've been proud of to make the save.

Yesterday evening I was late in getting back from work. Thank god for no speed restrictions on autobahns. I managed to get home and the TV switched on 5 minutes before kick off. They were panning round the stadium as the Celtic support was in full voice. It always brings a lump to my throat. I dont know why; jealousy ? that I am not there, my people doing me proud.... but as always you are truly a magnificent wonderous sight to behold.

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
    They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
    In such a jocund company:
    I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
    And dances with the daffodils.

A red card for violent conduct means the player misses the next Domestic game regardless of the competition the offence took place in. This is not mandated by the SFA but by FIFA/UEFA disciplinary board. When we beat the huns a few years ago in the cis semi, Lubo and Mols (i think) got sent off for violent conduct and both missed the next game that we won 1-0 when thommo scored (after the referee had given Celtic a throw because Ricksen had tried to steal too many yards as it was originally a rankers throw)

    Cuellar's red card will be:
denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area) and means he will be banned for at least one league game and this is ordinarily the next one scheduled. If his red card takes him over the points threshold he may miss more than 1game but these would all be League games as his offence occurred in League competition.

I believe Weir got a yellow and a red card and will miss the Scottish Cup semi-final and then the game versus hibernian as his caution will have taken him over the points threshold so he will accrue another suspension however as his red card ban will have been served(in the cup) his suspension will not commence at the next league game, but the one after. All very complicated

One thing that greatly amused me about the huns cheating last night was how it came back to bite them. Beautiful irony!!

The Scotlands shame banner is a stroke of genius, loved it.

    Just a few thoughts:

    Absolutely thrilled with the result.

I must have watched a differnt game than everyone else last night however:
    1) What dies WGS say at halftime? I can't remember the last time we came out at halftime fired up.
    2) Robson was playing a blinder and was hooked???? Hartley was ok but a number of misplaced passes had nearly cost us. Why keep on our defensive midfielder anyway if you wanted to add to the strinking options. It's pointless saying that it worked 'cos lets be 100% honest after the substitution we looked worse. Indeed, I like most people could not see us scoring.
    3) Venegoor won loads of balls in the air but there is no understanding between him and Scott. I thought Scott was having a stinker tbh - his first touch is terrible. For me our best partnership is Samaras and Venegoor by a country mile.
    4) For all our domination in the 1st half we created very few chances and it took genius from Naka to get us out of jail
    5) Thought Wilson was much better than Naylor... but most people knew that so why has it taken an injury to get him hooked>
    6) To summarise, I thought we won despite the manager not because of him.

    B
