Scotland vulnerable to racial intolerance gestated in football

| | Comments (234)

Aiden McGeady is the victim of more racial crime than any other individual in Scotland.

He is regularly the subject of assault and racial abuse and at 22-years-old, cannot walk the streets of Glasgow alone.

I have sympathy for the police, who are seldom aware or involved in Aiden's problems, I have sympathy too for the football authorities, who are charged with the responsibility of protecting young players from hoards of profane Neanderthals, but at a time of significant immigration, Scotland cannot be allowed to turn into a ghetto of racial hate.

I have been reluctant to write about the truly awful, 'go back home' chants heard from the visiting support at Celtic Park on Sunday, as I am a Scot, and feel the image of my country has been violated by such racial intolerance, but the slide must be stopped.

Football has been hijacked as a breeding ground for racial intolerance all over the world and difficult though it is to combat, Fifa and Uefa have found ways.

Whether it is a Polish goalkeeper celebrating a Polish Pope (and goalkeeper) or a Scottish born winger playing for Ireland, which he is entitled to do, Scotland's institutions; the police, football authorities, education authorities, the media, even you and I, must continue to repeat the mantra; One Scotland, many cultures, until its resonance penetrates the thickest of skulls.

Aiden in particular needs all our support; he is not here to become a poster boy for protest, he just wants to play for Celtic and enjoy a normal life.

Excellent post Paul. i agree 100%.
Its beyond belief that such things seem to be allowed to go on,
and often even remain unchallenged.

Ive recently moved away from Glasgow, and this just reminds me all over again what people are up against back home.

I dont think it wil ever change, which makes me very sad to say

Why dont authorites start throwing the book at these scumbags?
Id love to know

Hail Hail

Paul,

The site looks great and makes excellent use of white space and is very user friendly. If you are looking for some more tips or inspiration I would recommend Steve Krug's book "don't make me think"

There are a few coding errors, but you can check them at http://validator.w3.org/ if you need a hand with any of them let me know and I will be happy to fix them for you.

Yours in Celtic

Therags...

New CQN looking good.

Very seldom post but lurk every day, thought I'd see how the registration etc worked

Congrats on the new site Paul.

I thought you were leaving it until 3 in a row was confirmed.

C'mon Celtic 3 more wins for the sweetest title since stopping the 10!

Apologies if you are having trouble posting today. As you will have noticed, the new look site launched today and we moved away from Blogger (finally) to a blog engine hosted on my server.

Many people have been in touch to say they cannot register, apologies to all, I'll update as soon as we have a resolution.

Congrats to Monsterpop, first in and thanks to Therags and cdc.

Paul

Don't know if the info is relevant to anyone else but I registered earlier. I did'nt get an e-mail confirmation to activate so I'd thought I'd give the log in a try and here I am so if others have registered and are waiting for an e-mail you could also try to log in.

cheers derby

derbyshirebhoy

Exactly the same with me, I registered this afternoon didn't get the confirmation e mail, tried just now & it let me in

Thanks, DSB.
I have just followed your instructions and if you are reading this I was successful!

Thanks Derbyshire Bhoy, that worked for me!

Site looks the biz, Paul.

Artur & Aiden front page news in the redtops on consecutive days? They're trying anything and everything to get at us.

Hunt them down Celtic! 3 in a row is gonna be sweet!

DSB
I have just followed your instructions and thats me in as well. Good thinking.

Hail Hail

Great stuff Paul - no more blogger. Looks good so far.

I hope folks keep the same name when registering or it will all get very confusing!

Watch The Beiderbekke Affair on ITV. I saw it years ago and thought it was brilliant. Be interesting to see if it has stood the test of time.

I'm in

Looking Good ! (the blog, not me although i must say I look not too bad, 2 thumbs and my own teeth

The (p) artist formerly known as Nae Bread ,

Paul the new site looks great. Congratulations! It took a little time to get through - thanks to my ICT savvy son!

With regards to the Boruc incident on Sunday, mt thoughts are that any Rankers supporter in the ground would have needed superdooper vision to have seen what was on the T-shirt. I sist in the Main Stand and have an excellent seat. The guy in front of me asked what was on the T-shirt because he couldn't see even when Artur was standing close to the touchline. I thought it was something Papal but could not be sure. I thought it might have been the crest because I could see yellow/white markings on the shirt.

I don't think he did it to wind up TFOD but to show solidarity with the Celtic support. To show that he understood the Holy Goalie song and the final words of the song 'God Bless the Pope'. I also think that it was ill advised and that he should now stop getting involved with matters not directly related to the football.

I love the guy and I have every sympathy for him because of the treatment he has had to endure from neanderthals and a bigoted establishment because he has his prematch ritual which includes making the Sign of the Cross which only the worst type of bigot could find in any way offensive.

Hail! Hail!

SadiesBhoy

I had so many problems trying to post on blogger that I just stopped trying ..... but here I am on your new and much better looking CQN.

Thanks for the new site and the leg up guys.
just went in without waiting for the email.

KEEP THE FAITH....

God bless us, every one ;-)

Modern blogs are...better.

Paul, are the contents of the old blog gone for good or will they be available in an archive?

Chris

Paul, my wife lost our Internet access on Sunday and it took a Virgin Media engineer to come out and sort it for us today. I had planned to spend Sunday and Monday nights reading the comments from CQN posters. Now that it has been restored today I find that you have a new blog and that all previous entries have disappeared - am I gutted or what?

Gordon j

I was hoping to log on with a new name to get away from my previous posts and kid on that I was a new blogger(blogger no more)

anyway I am still here so I will continue to give useless opinions on anything and everything CELTIC

I liked Blogger better :-)

Agree on most things you said Paul though the authorities have done little to act on Sectarianism in Scotland. From Rod McDonald to Neil Lennon they'd rather bury their heads in the sand.
Aiden needs all the support the fans and the club can give him. With THG the evil in Scotland will drive the two of them out.

3 in a row for bournesouprecipe....

paul how do we delete our comments?

sorry just checked via the preview...doh

This may have been discussed in the postings which I missed over the last few days, but does anyone else feel that we have turned a major corner in games against THEM in that we are capable of being much more physical than we could have ever imagined in these games. I thought that over the two games at CP, we kicked 7 shades of doodoo out of them. Barry Robson showed the way, Paul Hartley took up the mantle and Big Jan decided it was time to nail his colours to the mast. We achieved all this without Bobo whom I thought was a must if we were to hold our own physically against them.

Our guys now know what is required to win these games and looked as if they enjoyed themselves doing it! Barry Robson has been an excellent signing and should be a first pick from now on.

Incidently, Hugh McDonald of The Herald (whom I like and who supports The Bhoys) wrote an article after the last game against them at Ipox in March saying that Gordon had been 'Waltered'

After our two recent victories I'm considering writing,
'Waltered?
- Faltered!
Altered!'

Hail! Hail!

Paul congrats on the new launch it looks amazing, clean lines etc.

My apologies to GordonJ and my kids, but I thought new site new name, so from the blogger previously known as Bhoysfour, Hail hail!

GSU

Great new site Paul- well done!

I have to say that I am seething at the reaction to Artur's T-Shirt, though I am not one bit surprised.

What is so offensive about the Pope? It is OK for them to sing FTP without an utterance from media, politicians etc and now this??

The entire Artur situation came about because of the fact that the reprobates who "spew their bile from the slopes of Ibrox" went out of their way to be offended at Artur's blessing himself. This is an act practised by AB his entire career- the fact that only one set of fans in World football can be offended by the act says a lot more about them than anyone else in this whole sorry episode!

These bigots have repeatedly tried to get a reaction from AB, culminating in the now infamous voodoo banner- not much coverage of this in the old media. This was a sickening attack on an individual because of his religious beliefs, yet the silence from the media was an approval of the bigots.

How these same bigots can claim to be offended when the get a reaction is beyond me, although nothing should surprise me when it comes to 'that mob'.

I have read a lot of Celtic fans views on the matter and a lot claim that AB should not have worn the T-Shirt. I think AB has taken an opportunity to expose these people for the bigots that they are.

What right minded individual can be offended by someone blessing themselves? What right minded individual can be offended by a picture of the Pope?

Can anyone tell me why they are offended at these things?

One game at a time. Can't wait for Saturday lunchtime.

looking forward to tonights game because i've got a feeling that tomorrow will be boring and on thursday my distain for that mob will get the better of me.

i cant bring myself to go to manchester just because the hun in law came to seville. (although he did admit that they are too bigoted for me to sit in their company)

SadiesBhoy
Agree with you but I would add that Gordon Strachan has learned how to play these games as well. He believes in a pass and move game and rightly so. Against the Bad Guys he has learned that you have first to battle for the right.

was thinking the difference in style between Celtic and TFOD and its simple,
Gord tries to play football and walt disney, boom boom.

Why is this wee gem no used more ??

what else disney walt do ?

good stuff paul67 I thought the blog was just broke again earlier, never realised it was the change.

Barcelona gave up on the league on Saturday to focus on tonight, whereas Manchester United went through the mill at Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona haven't scored a goal for three league games in succession and are in the doldrums, but tonight only requires a score draw and if I was a betting man, I'd back them to go through.

Super looking new shiny blog – well done and thanks to Paul for making the big effort. So impressed that I broke the lurking habit of years (has it been going four or five years?) to sign up to the CHAMPIONS blog.

On your post, I came back to Scotland a few years ago after 20-odd years in Engerlund and find it a bit depressing that the attitudes that you talk about have shown little improvement in that time.

Site looks great Paul - not as cliquey as the old one (or should that be cliqué?).

No.64
it's not just Scotland. Why did the last PM have to resign before he could finally convert to the catholic faith?

It stills happens in England and beyond

Fair comment, but it seems a lot more open and ugly here at home.

Some goal by Scholes - lucky they're not playing us as Artur would have saved it!

Good work- site looks much better...!

Hi Paul,

Great new look. Well done again on your many and much appreciated efforts to provide Celtic News as unlike any medium this side of Pluto. Real Celtic news, real Celtic issues without the need for "balance".!

I salute your post and agree whole heartedly. How the "Meeja" could divert the attention from "that song" beggars belief.

Onwards and upwards Paul,

Ironbhoy.

Why "I belong to Glasgow."

I'm reliably informed that all sunday evening I had a grin on my face that would have been the envy of every feline in the greater manchester area.
Having succumbed to the deep sleep of the heroically drunk I awoke on monday morning, safe in the knowledge that we'd done the manky mob and that special feeling that I can only equate to how I felt as a kid on the first day of the school summer holidays (mind the old "full-fat" 12 week ones!) - blissful.

Tuesday however has been a day for more sober reflection, and Paul's timely article has asked a lot of questions about certain aspects of life in "Dear Old Glasgow Town".

Now,I haven't lived in Glasgow for well over 15 years so I temper my thoughts with the perspective of of an outsider, but it's as an outsider that I feel we as a group of individuals need to assert our rights and stand full - square behind those in our "family" who would be exposed to the kind of treatment that Aiden, Artur and the ordinary fans have to live ( or die) with.

We've had death threats to Lenny, exhortations to "return home" filth about the Great Famine and slurs against Scotland's Greatest Manager. "Scotland's Shame" feels it necessary to pillory one prominent Polish Catholic goalkeeper for wearing a Tshirt showing a pic of another prominent Polish Catholic goalkeeper.

In the words of the song "There's something the matter with Glasgow......" and its all our responsibility to sort it out.

I've been at since this morning, but at last I'm in.

I see Artur has escaped punishment,I wonder why they let him off,The rags thought it was a hanging offence,I thought it was magic,he's had to put up with so much bile for the last couple of years,he deserves a medal.
Well done Artur,I hope you come up with more of the same.

Thank you blogger for your thank you for registering myself. Am I in ?

Ditto thenumber64bus sentiments Paul.

Thanks for running the site and providing the forum. I've changed tag name from David to WagTheDog, original tag was a bit boring.

Not sure what the solution is to this problem that Aiden is suffering. Suppose the judicial system should use the power available to them under the recent racial hate crime legislation to punish these 3 individuals, then follow up with similar to target all those who dish out such bile either on or off the field of a football match.

Would be interesting to know how many people have actually been convicted of this charge since its introduction.

I'll be watching on Saturday to see the police reaction, last time it was pretty much ignored by stewards and police.

Does anyone think Celtic could better defend Aiden by making public representations to clubs, starting with Motherwell FC, and the authorities that they expect these parties to fully uphold the law.

Have I arrived?

Ach, is it broke again..?

Paul67

Loving the new site. Thanks for all your efforts.

SwanseaBhoy

Hi all, long time lurker, thought it was time to join the party on new site. Good luck with new site Paul, lets hope it signals more domination for our beloved Celts!!

GOD BLESS THE POPE

its getting to the stage that our players have to fear for their safety everytime they go out.

What happened to Aiden is not the only incident there has been this season, they dont all make the papers

Hello to All. As a long time lurker, I just thought I'd try to sign up to the fresh new site, (as I had a nightmare on the old one) Congrats CQN on your new home, unfortunately you may now have to suffer my rantings now and again:)

4th attempt to get registered seems to have worked. Don't know if it's a widespread problem with yahoo! mail but I never got the registration e-mail(s) delivered. When I attempted a forgotten password change it did deliver this to the Yahoo! email address.

On the 4th attempt I used a Gmail email address and got the registration e-mail within seconds.

new era of domination?

good luck with it.

Man Ute 1 Barce 0 @ HT

Great goal from Scholes to break the tie. 25 yard swerving effort - he is no Naka but he can hit a ball!

Barce have come close a few times and Messi really looks in the mood. I think there are more goals to come.

We talked a lot about one Scott Booth at the weekend. I hope he is watching this game simply to listen to David Pleat, who as always is a real pleasure to listen to. Insightful, providing analysis of tactics and an understanding of the game that Mr Booth will never have.

hello?

Very glam, Paul. Looks great.

Surely we want Man U or Chelsea (perish the thought) to win the CL? I thought we need this so that we qualify automatically for the group stages if we do 3IAR.

If not, let's see Barca or Liverpool win.

Test.

STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS,

Nice new site Paul.
Oregonbhoy

If the 2nd half at Old Trafford continues in the same vein we're in for a treat. Terrific shot from Scholes but Zambrotta will know exactly how Gary Caldwell felt when Henry scored against us at Celtic Park.

PJBHOYNYC,

Cheers and thanks for your comment on the last blog,

STILL STANDING UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS,

Referee plays 6 minutes of added on time.

Manchester united 1 0 Barcelona

Two English sides in Moscow.

'GG

Gordon_J

I will be amazed if Barcelona do not score in the second half.

That may not be enough as Manchester United are very dangerous going forward, but the midfield has been entirely Barcelona's and all it needs is for one of the many ricochets in the Manchester United area to fall to a Barcelona player.

Man U 1 Barce 0 FT

A great game, I can't believe there was only one goal. Barce played some lovely football but couldn't make clear chances for all their posession and fine passing.

Man U v Liverpool or Chelsea.

Whoooosh ....Yo! peeps what gives???

Well, well, well !!! So here we are then, in our new home. I like it Big Ghuy. Does it come tried and tested ? Let's hope that this new place brings the same amount of amazing times that we experienced on blogger and it doesn't bring anywhere near the amount of grief that we experienced electronically !!!

C'mon Celts, let's test the capacity and capabilities of our new home by bringing us 3-in-a-row :o)))

hello to everyone, i'm another long time lurker and a CQN addict

to be honest, in the past,i have never really felt a big urge to post, the reason is because there are so many intelligent celtic fans on here, and they discuss the issues and ask the questions i would ask if I was half as eloquent.

well done on the new layout Paul, and here's hoping the celts can finish the season with a 100% record

all teh best to everyone on here :)

Robson has shown real mettle in last 2 games, a must pick, what about playing him at left back and bringing back brown?

Woooooohooooo !

Celtic Quick News after Trinny and Susannah have got the gladrags out for it !

Well done Paul and an excellent opening post.

keeping the faith and standing up

If GS decides to leave in the summer. What about Sven to take over? Better than DOL. Sonner that rumour is put to bed the better.

Unemployed and up for grabs, could see DD go for it. I quite like Ericsson. Harshly treated by England, but maybe he realised that they weren't as good as their media made out.

Always admired him in the 90's when he was manager of Lazio and Sampdoria. Brought in the likes of Veron and developed him at Sampdoria as well as Montella etc...

I think they guy would relish working with guy like Naka, McGeady, O'Dea and develop them further. Can spot a player as well.

Just a thought!!

Long long time lurker - reading the thoughts and nonsense of fellow fans on here help get me through the day at work. Seriously, hours of entertainment! Figure now's as good a time as any to get myself a login with the new site layout (seeing as we're all coming out of the woodwork), before I fade back into lurking.

For what it's worth....I fall into happy clapper camp and think Mr Strachan is doing a great job - with title number 3 just about in the bag. So long as we win our next 3 games it's ours. I just can't see the other lot winning the rest of their games.

..sad to see Barcelona lose out on the final. The best (visiting) team to grace parkhead for years!!

Mon the hoops!

E D B,

You have never been away,

Did you get my email about the Foggy Dew last Friday?

I sent 4 different emails and have received no replies. I was just wondering if they had been delivered.

STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS,

Martin.

At the 100th time of asking I got in, nice site.

Still wallowing in the spendour of a well deserved victory. Now worried about going to Tannadice where I know the two Jimmies will lie down to FOD at Pittodrie, hard place to get 3 points is Tannadice particularly if DUTD need points for a EUFA Cup place.

Still we're back in the race.

Visited BB's on Hunday after the game, first time visitor, great pub I'll be back.

Still on about origins of 'bouncy bouncy' I guess some ghuys tried to assist but your blogs are gone now theat CQN has been updated ............. any more feedback on this issue?

Paul67,

Congrats on the new site, but what time zone are we in. maybe it's me being one hour behind.

As regards the perma raging. Why do we spend so much time railing at the ignorant and riseable terracing fodder that foam and spew on a weekly basis.

These people can't help themselves.

the real enemy are the smooth, urbane and plausible media and the well spoken "reasonable" chap who can excuse the darkest side of that club, but doesn't make the mistake of siding with the scummier side of their club.

These are the ones who keep that club going.

Like the new digs Paul, will you be having the cyber equivalent of a hoose warming party? :)

Great to get back didn't realise how much I needed to know it was there. Was that the plan Paul? THe site looks great well done!

I listened to the Real Radio phone in tonight and it seems to me that they are dissecting every single Celtic goal from Sunday. It now appears that Scott Mcdonald stood on Kris Broadfoot's foot thus causing him to stumble and knock skippy to the ground. You couldn't make it up if you tried. Still believing. Congrats on the new look site.

Still on a high after Sunday, what was most pleasing about the 2 recent Huns games is the way we went about our business, Naylor, Caldwell, Robson, JVoH, Hartley and McGeady all leaving their mark, in more ways than one. Beat them at their own game and I don't think they liked it one bit.
A couple of marginals decisions go our way- they didn't like that either.

And how sweet, sweet is the irony... the "call-off" cowards and the Thomson "injury" cheat- their chickens have come home to roost.
The cracks are widening, Fiorentina might just be the end of them, I simply don't think they have the stomach for the fight any more.

Amdy Faye- what is he all about... Willie McKay- you played a blinder there my son!

Paul

I think you're wonderful.

Love to you and yours

Mabel.

Hail Hail, good to be back.

Keep up the good work Paul.

Come on Barca !

Well done Paul 67! Discrimination against Aiden? Of course. But how does poor Thomas Murphy feel about all his "mentions" in the presbyterian Scottish press and Scotsport. Derek Johnstone in his article in tonight's Times mentions mistakes by both linesmen but names Thomas. Now just in case James Bee feels left out, I'll give him a namecheck. But his surname doesn't quite have the same "timmy" ring to it! The article appeared under the headline "A bitter taste of Murphy". And in his column,Tosh criticised Artur for his antics.
