Shameless diving goes without SFA sanction

It seems that the entire Scottish football community and their favourite team are utterly shameless.

I was speaking with some Celtic fans this afternoon and discussed whether or not the Scottish football and the coverage thereof, is more prejudicial than it was in the past. These arguments are notoriously subjective, but if you are my age or older, you will remember the celebrated demon in blue, Polaris, also known as John McDonald.

McDonald was a serial diver (Polaris was a nuclear submarine famed for being the object of political dissent at the time), and became celebrated after an infamous incident at Easter Road when he dived inside the box to win a penalty for Rangers. The nearest Hibernian player was several yards away.

Kris Boyd’s spectacular tumble and dramatic appeals on Sunday were worthy of the great (sic) man McDonald himself but such are the times we live in his efforts scarcely seem noteworthy.

If only the SFA chief executive would make some public pronouncement about stamping out cheating.

I have an incredible knack of coming and posting at the point where Blogger throws a hissy fit.

Cheers Paul for another timely article.

Reply to Kojo from previous thread (have started to copy before submitting just in case):

An interesting suggestion. One that really does conjure thoughts of fantastical fairytales. Our Willie coming through and taking the team by the scruff of the neck, peppering it with talented and hungry youngsters, and assembling the next Lisbon Lions.

It's beyond me to say that it is impossible, and can't work.

But look at his past managerial successes for a moment. some success in the Irish League would not be the only thing we'd like to see on the CV of our next manager.

Which then only leaves us with his record with the youngsters here. It's an impressive record, and one that frustrates me a little that not more of his proteges are breking through/being given a chance in the big team.

It would amount to a massive gamble.

Is it one we can afford to take?

Thanks for the thought though, made me smile.

    Ah Polaris MacDonald
    An ugly, talentless wee weasel.
As you say Paul, he wasn't even particularly good at diving. But then, no Rangers player has ever had to be good at it.
    Dignity????? Aye right.

Surely the question should be asked about the coaching at Ibrox ?
In the past 2 weeks alone we have had not only Boyd but Thompson and Broadfoot as well, flinging themselves about trying to win fouls or get opponents carded.
To me it is a small sign that the huns are feeling pressure but we look incapable of doing anything to add to this !

    Paul67,

Them playing there final game against aberdeen is no coincidence whatsoever i don't care what anyone says. If, and its a big if as i don't see it happening, there is anything to play for on the final day they are playing against there govan friends with previous in such circumstances, but more importantly they will likely have the added excuse of a scottish cup final to play the following week, hence the reason they put out the under 21s.

Last saturdays result/performance becomes more painful anytime you look at there remaining games. I said after the defeat at ibrox we could still win the league if we won the last 8 games though i didn't think we would, there was no doubt they'd drop points in the run in, i didn't however expect us to fall at the first hurdle.

The thing is, before ibrox we all said if we win the next 9 games we win the league, it then changed to if we win the next 8 we should still win it, it's now changed to if we win the next 7 there's still hope. Stranger things have happened and i hope i'm wrong but i just cant see it.

Paul, regardless of what happens you have done a great job of trying to keep spirits high in recent trying times, keep up the good work my friend.

    HAIL HAIL.

There seem to a number of myths going around about Gordon Strachan which I would like to challenge.

He inherited a poor highly paid squad from Martin O'Neill. Of that squad Neil Lennon, Bobo Balde and Stan Petrov were mainstays of his Team 1, alongside McManus and Maloney who were never realy regulars under MON. Of that 5 Bobo's wages are well publicised, Neil Lennon took a pay cut to stay at Celtic, and Stan Petrov got a new deal, which I assume was approved by our current board. Maloney and McManus would not have been on big wages. So only really Alan Thompson and Chris Sutton of the squad he took over could be described as being overpaid in relation to their value to Mr Strachan and he got rid of them when he could.

He has achieved in Europe what Martin O'Neill could not, in taking Celtic to the last 16 of the Champions League. MON took over a team ranked 95 in Europe. When he left, after going out with the same nine points that have taken Gordon Strachan through, losing to a dubious last minute penalty to Lyon, our trip to Seville and a UEFA QF after knocking out Barca we were ranked 22 in Europe. Gordon Strachan's Celtic have knocked out only 1 team ranked higher than Celtic in the rankings, (Benfica this season). We are now ranked 43rd in Europe.

He has won 4 domestic trophies out of 6 so he must be good - looks like that's going to be 4 out of 9, not so good.

Gordon Strachan is a better manager than Rijjkard, Mourinho, and Martin O'Neill to name but 3 names I've seen mentioned on here. Come on, he's not even as good as Allardyce, check the statistics, Gordon tells us how they are important.

Gordon Strachan has reduced the wage bill, so Riordan, Pressley, Killen, Sno, Doumbe, Virgo, Gravesen, Robson don't take any wages from the club do they ?

People are asking who would you have to replace him, only one man I can think of, Dermot has his number and maybe he'd come back. Get Martin back where he belongs and this time back him.

I'm 38, apart from the centenary season and stopping 10 in a row, i've seen some fairly bad times, until Martin O'Neill arrived and we put Rangers in their place, and boy did we put them there. My proudest season as a Celtic supporter ended up with us winning nothing, 2003. That team took us to Seville, they took the league to the very last minutes of the season and when we lost the league, we sang "Hold your head up high" and we did. Its not all about winning.

People talk about Black Sunday , which was desperately disappointing but given what was going on in the background, MON can be excused for having his mind off the job, even with that background we only just lost it.

This year we have given the league away even before it started , the plc's refusal to address the obvious deficiencies in the team. 1st thing Smith done was bring in Weir, how we laughed, I'd have him ahead of our captain and that joker who plays beside him. You start at the back and build, no point having a great goalie, if all he gets to do is pick the ball out of the net due to the lack of quality in front of him.

Our board are willing to accept mediocrity, that's why we went for Gordon Strachan, who, to be fair, has surpassed my expectations of him.

Can you imagine Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger or Jose Mourinho accepting the injustices we have seen this season to ensure the manky mob stop our 3 in a row. Thats why we need Martin back, he hates them just as much as we do and he loathes Murray.

As a big man once said the Celtic jersey does not shrink to fit inferior players, it seems though that our bench and our boardroom do.

Sorry to rant, but absolutely scunnered that mob are going to win a treble without us even pushing them.

The tabloids would have picked up on this if Boyd was in the Hoops. They'd have concealed their attacks on us by illiciting a quote from Darren Dods (who I think was the innocent defender), and screamed a twisted version of it and massive letters on the back page.

I've been on my own personal crusade to not read any of these rags, not even their websites, for the past couple of months now.

Can anyone tell me if the have.

I don't think I need wait on a reply to know the answer.

The Scottish players are the worse for it at Rangers with Hutton, Broadfoot, Thompson, and Boyd all doing dramatic dives throughout the season. The dives by Thompson and Broadfoot against Celtic were as cynical as you can get. Hutton's habit of running alongside players and falling over was particularly annoying. What is worse is that these are the type of players who have no shame about throwing themselves into lunging two footed tackles. These are right sensitive hatchet men!

It's funny that Gordon Smith's favourite team have made him to look stupid. He looks stupid for his hiding after all his pronouncements about stamping diving out of the game and his willingness to slate Lithuanian players for diving, it seems that it's not an issue when it's Scottish Rangers men.

While I say this, I'm not naive to assume that no Celtic player ever goes down easy. I don't necessarily think there are any divers in our team (maybe Samaras?) but I would imagine that some players wouldn't try their hardest to stay on their feet if they feel they are being fouled, I think this is common sense and I wish Brown used this approach against Rangers. The type of diving at Rangers is as cynical as you can get with antics like Boyd's complaining and Thompson getting stretchered off make it all the worse.

You make some good points there, in particular the one regarding the team Martin took over compared to the one Gordon took over from, and where they've taken them.

Id take Martin back in a second, though i'd say the chances of him coming back are somewhere between zilch and none.

He knew he'd taken us as far as he could and needed a fresh challenge, not to mention the revelations since revealed about him lining up the leeds job years back.

I have said it before...so, whatis wrong with repeating it for the Forty Second Time... between friends...huh?

Owing to the Inflationary Financial state of the Transfer Market, which to us is quite crippling...

We simply cannot expect to EVER be fortunate enough to capture any worthwhile Player from it...given the near impecunious state of our treasury...
    other, than SECOND RATE IMPORTS.

Note the sorry quality of talent, that is represented by the cadre of players that we have captured ... up to now.

Did I just read words to the effect "bring MON back?"

Time is a great healer, as they say. MON has his place in Celtic history. However, let us not forget that his final season was less than glorious, and that is ignoring the final day of the season. There was much debate at that time concerning how MON had been rumbled by opposing SPL teams, they knew how to counter his tactics and we didn't know how to change - we had reverted to the long ball, failing which punt it to Bellamy and cross your fingers.

So no, MON is not the way forward (even if he would come), it would be a step sideways.

Kojo, you're welcome. It was worthy of comment.

I dismay of our unfortunate unwillingness to bring these boys through.

These youngsters have been successful in their own sphere, and surely a handful of them can be integrated successfully into the team.

You rightly point out the minefield that is the transfer market.

Surely we should be making forays there to add the finishing touches to our team, rather than build it entire. Why is that good players only come through at other clubs?

The same argument could be made for the pedagogue of these youth in our midst.

I said before it would be a gamble, and stand by that. But I'm still smiling at the thought of it.

Maybe Willie should be "loaned" out to an SPL or Championship team, to see how he copes, and keep him in mind for the next time.

But wee Gordon is still in charge anyway, and retains my support with it, albeit with reservations.

Kojo :- I don't know enough about Mr McStay to have an opinion on whether he would make a good manager or not, his record below first team level seems good though. The idea itself can be a good one, although maybe some sort of training is needed for a second team coach to prepare him to move up. I think the best example of this would be the famous Liverpool boot room and it didn't seem to do them any harm. If it's not a viable idea this time around it does have the seeds for future management teams.

You read correctly - I would have him back in the morning.

WIth regard to his last season, would that be the one where we lost the league by 1 point on the last day in the last minute of the season. We scored 85 goals. We won the Scottish Cup, after knocking out mighty Clyde 5-0 away from home. A team that was rumbled yet still managed to take the title to the very last minutes of the season. Our current team was rumbled a lot sooner.

He didn't receive any backing from the board to supplement his aging squad, and his bargain buys were no better than Gordon Strachan's , the difference is that his big buys all delivered, Sutton, Joos, Thompson, Lennon, Hartson.

I have seen both David Moyes and Mark Hughes mentioned, with few negative comments in the last few days. Martin's record in England stands comparison with either of them. He is the outstanding candidate in the Premiership, given that neither Fergie or Wenger would want the job. He should be asked at least if he wants it.

They simply cannot affort the Coin..that would be required to entice any Incoming Manager, who has ALL of the qualities that they are looking for.

I just think that his (MON) time at CP had come to an end regardless of his personal circumstances.

    Donati
    Jvoh

Thats 15M+ yes 15M+ wasted. Who is culpable for this??

so please do not state that a manager of repute would not be tempted with a bounty like this bi-annually.

    Continued inclusion of
    Nakamura
    jvoh
    caldwell
    mick
    donati
    naylor

Thats half a team, yes half a team that play week in and week out regardless of how poorly they consistantly perform. - and yes there are alternatives available in all of these positions. Who is culpable for this???

    The continued exclusion of
    riordan
    balde
    hartley
    samaras
    robson.

Surely all should have featued over the painful past 3/4 months in place of the usual suspects listed previously.
    Who is culpable for this??

The disgraces that were A.B. (possibly mitigating circumstances), clyde, a midfield of sno, donati, jarosik in a match at ibrox.
No flexibility in team formation or tactics. The starting line up on Saturday. 40 minutes to go on Sat. to save the season. Still 442 even vs 1 m'well player up front when we desperately require a goal.
Removal at this point of the countries top marksman (26 goals).
Continuation of 442, when it is surely apparent that we do not have the personell for this formation.
    Who is culpable for this???

Whitedoghunch :- I was talking about W. McStay, (I think) the one who was a manager in Ireland and is on the back room staff at Celtic Park.
I think the idea of a bootroom sat up the way Liverpool did it is a good one but the problem is in how to manage the step up. For a player he can be introduced to the first team in stages, coming on as a sub, playing the odd game etc. For a manager it's harder maybe letting him take control in the league cup would be a solution or farming him out to a smaller club much as young players are sent on loan.

Paul, thanks for putting up the video of Boyd cheating, I hadn't seen it before now and wondered if it was as bad as made out. An absolutely shocking attempt at cheating.

Two things immediately sprang to mind. One - why was there no yellow card? Two - Scott Booths laughing off of the incident. Compare his reaction to Boyd to his reaction to Nakamura at Love St (which wasn't even a dive).

I agree, there are some valid points made in some comments but it was the stream of abuse contained within the comments that got my goat. I've put on a comment bacing up Strachan so I'm waiting to see what kind of stuff I get back.

I suppose that is what makes CQN what it is. Almost all the arguments on whatever subject are well put and articulate. Lately there has been a bit of tension, but on the whole it's a site where Celtic fans can debate with each other in a civilised manner.

    cardiffbhoy

I agree with you as regards the last season under MON. I was bored the other day and was reading one of my bhoys Celtic Christmas Annual of 2006, which mainly looked back at season 2004/05. I recall that season being turgid and dull but the goals scored and points accumulated were impressive.

I didn't rate the pairing of Sutton and Hartson as it was slow and one-dimesional. A comment stood out regarding a John Hartson goal. It was the 35th goal between the two and it was only January! Skippy and JVOH must be only just above that now and we're into April. I have no doubt the points gained that season would be enough to win the League this year.

I hope your daughter has a huge smile at the end of the season.

I also hope you save your £500 and in the process take the opportunity to teach her one of life's truly tangible lessons.

Ask her to choose a rescue dog - there is no feeling in the world like it. I know, I was her age and it has stayed with me from that day till now.

The dog will repay her 1000 times over with unconditional devotion and love - as most dogs do - but she will always know that SHE made the difference to that dog's life.

She'll be reminded of her act of compassion every single day the dog is with her.

And she'll remember it every single day of her life, long after the dog is gone.

One of life's great lessons for a child - don't pay £500, someone else will but there's a dog waiting on her to rescue it.

Agree 100/%. It was the first time I have seen it and it is shocking. The problem is that to date the media are not reporting these issues as you have said .

Paul67 re above - that is why it is vitally important that you continue to highlight these issues otherwise the league extension,Wattie's encroachment and this cheating will not be discussed .

Surely one of the bright guys can contact Setanta as to the clear bias in the Naka/Broadfoot/Thomson and now Boyd scenario.

By the way this is not soley the reason why this league is sliping away, but it is still right to put these thing out in the open ala Fergie, Mourinho and Wenger.

Finally no to MON coming back.

For me M O'N should be number one on our list of targets. He may not be interested as I suspect he is destined for a top four job in England but we at least have to ask him the question.

He may answer an SOS from us to sort out the mess created by the current manager and board which has gone along way to destroying the clubs reputation he worked so hard to restore.

    Kojo from the previous thread.

Sorry for the delay in replying to you. visitors arrived just as I posted and am just now catching up.

Adapt or die. Yea. Not original, but, I think, apt.

Your theory of promoting the reserve team coach, in the event of a vacancy, is interesting.

There is a certain merit in principle, on the grounds of his intimate knowledge of who is ready or not for promotion.

However, I feel there is a kind of barrier between the reserve set up and the first team, inasmuch as they don't necessarily train together and his familiarity with the top team would be on more or less a nodding acquaintance.

Whether this is surmountable or not is moot.

I believe in the principle that the manager should control all aspects of the playing staff and should therefore be au fait with every player on his books.

Gordon Strachan, by his regular attendance at reserve games, appears to match this criteria.

His predecessor, on the other hand, famously said that he was not interest in 16-18 year olds as "I would be dead by the time they came through".

His record of promoting youth bore this out.

Has Willie Mc.Stay got the Field Marshal's baton in his rucksack? I don't know.

Heading for the Ovaltine and the cot. Niteall.

More that decent match tonight in the CL. Arsenal were in the end well beaten, but their stats overall make interesting reading. Won nothing in three seasons (may yet win Premiership this, ok), last won league 4 years ago. No European success under Wenger, who in sum in twelve seasons, excluding Europe (runners-up twice) and 4 charity Shields, has won 7 from 36 trophies (3 leagues, 4 FA Cups). Summer of 2007 spent £17m, brought in £31m. Anywhere near the sack? Absolutely not. Interesting case overall.

I suppose that it's because of what happened before Wenger took over. He may have won only 3 titles in 12 seasons, but Arsenal had only won 3 titles in the 42 years prior to his arrival.

Guys, leave of Edward - Its not his fault that some referees want to help his team.

I have a number of r*ngers supporting mates, one, cant see the bias during the game but after viewing the highlights will admit they got lucky breaks - he blames this on poor refeering. Another, think there is a bias and says - Its the way it is m8 you are a 'catholic' team in a country where catholics are outnumbered 10 to 1 there will always be bias! (Catholic Team? Nous ?)

I dont like to see any team getting help, I was embarrassed at some of the things going our way at the Falkirk away game before xmas - but its personal view - I find that kind of thing embarrassing, whereas one mate says he will take anything thats going.

Dear Joan Burnie - Should I fall out with the m8 who doesnt see the Bias? ;-)

Having not seen the rakers game at the weekend and obviously having heard nothing about this in the press, this is the first time that I have seen this incident and once again we are talking about the injustices in our game. I made a point a couple of days ago that the club shoul be making some noises on these issues to highlight this rank poor standard of officiating. There must be a Celtic minded hack somewhere that can be employed in the press room. In the last week alone we have heard about wattie pushing an official, ignoring a touchline ban and now this. Does any one expect action to be taken, of course not. I for one live in England where this sort of thing just would not be allowed to happen and unfortunatley it will turn fans away from our beloved club. Silence is not an option.

Believe it or not they stock a copy of the Daily Ranker in our library reading room (PFAyr will testify to the incredulity of that fact). Amid the pages declaring Cuellar as good as Ferdinand and Terry (ahem), recalling the 1972 european cup (that no longer exists), there is a whole page devoted to phone-ins to Hugh Keevins. All are from Celtic "fans" and all deride Strachan.

I ask, who are these people. Do they really exist ? I find it incredible that given the widely held knowledge that the media manipulate such information to undermine Celtic, that any fan would telephone, whatever level of dissatisfaction they are currently experiencing.

I raise this because I truly do wonder whether these "fans" exist and these calls have been made. Does the DR retain the addresses and telephone numbers of these "fans" ? Let's be honest, its not difficult to write a disparaging rant under the name, say, Jim O'Brien of Port Glasgow, of Greenock or wherever. Is there an independent verifier that these calls are in fact they hold themselves out to be, ie, are they genuine ?

The first game at Ibrox this season was the most animated I have been watching a game for years.

I can take the defeats, I've been at a few bad ones against that mob, it was the manner.

The dog doesn't even come into the room when he hears football commentary now.

Her indoors did find it amusing watching me but has now changed her opinion.

Now she is a woman who watches football, can hold a discussion quite comfortably about a number of sports and certainly holds her own views. She is also English, so whenever I discussed the bias in Scotland, the patronising 'there there' was always prevalent.

    Thats changed since that day.

To have 9 players booked when the general concensus was that our players haven't 'dug in' was bad enough but the constant, almost weekly joke that is refereeing in Scotland is becoming ridiculous.

It really helps having a fresh, unpartisan view on incidents - her language is gonna get worse than mine soon - I can see it coming.

I have been going to games since the late 70's and I really don't remember it being so bad. I remember certain incidents (such as McDonald at Easter Road) very clearly but not the constant drip feed.

I have read articles about Celtic's paranoia over the years, this has really got to be as bad.

The little decisions make all the difference. The warnings not bookings, the award or not of a free kick or penalty. It will not even itself out, not this year.

Even with all of that happening, up until last Saturday, I was confident that we would win the league.

I don't know what the answer is but it seems that we will need to score 3 and not conceed any just to get a draw.

As this grim season drags its weary catcase off to a well-deserved bullet in the knacker's yard there has only been one of the numerous calamities which have befallen us that hasn't been self-inflicted.

The exception, and worst of them all, has been TBurns' health problems. Most of the rest have been down to poor team selection, poor tactics, poor decisions in the transfer market and poor motivation. The faults for these lie not at the SFA, with the referees or our pals in the Media. They lie within the confines of Celtic.

At the start of next season, whoever is in charge will have to put out a team not expecting any favours from the SFA, from referees nor the media. Twas always thus.

But there are things we can control, so that we can rise above adversity and win trophies. We've done it before and we can do it again. The first step has to be to take a good hard look at ourselves though, before we press the blame button.

Anyways, after last night's battling draw against the Swans I'm beginning to think there may be a promotion party at Brunton Park come May.

“of” instead of “have” (e.g “he must of done it”) WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT???

Like yourself I can't wait for the season to finish.
There are staff at Celtic Park who should be ashamed of their contribution this season both on and off the park.

Next season I hope both on and off the park to see a more aggression.

I want to see our board and PR dept challenge some of the negative media reports.

I want us to retaliate first. I'm fed up with us being an easy target who accept everything the press say.

We need to start mean and set the rules. Rangers get an easy ride and always will under Smith/Murray.

An example of Celtic being the easy target were the Roy Keane headlines recently.

HanSolo :- As far as diving goes I've said before about the more blatant examples that they are wrong and the player involved should be carded. This goes as far back as P. Lovenkrands and as recently as K. Thompson both of whom I said were wrong, after watching the clip someone posted a link to I'll add K. Boyd to that, he should have been carded.
The postponement against Gretna I'm on record on here as saying it was wrong and I did find that one embarrassing.
As for the rest then the answer is no, I'm not. Every team cheats when they are on the park, they even have the cheek to call it gamesmanship or a pro foul, sometimes it's even lauded as taking one for the team.
As I said in a previous post the corinthian spirit is long gone from football.

You are welcome, one thing there was a couple of games where Ryan Conroy played but I thought he played at the back if not for those two games you'll need to include him and exclude Hartley who would have covered full back.

On a separate issue, The Sammy Nelson testamonial was my first ever Celtic game, as I live in the London area it was very handy. Went along with my dad and brother and my dad's pal (who wrote Over and Over by the way)We were in the Arsenal end and when the Celtic end was full the police allowed the Celtic fans in our end and allowed them to walk in front of the main stand. The Arsenal fans all ran toward the Celtic end and to say I was scared was an understatement ( I was only 10). Made my dad take me home, he vowed never to take me to another game again. Within two years I had made my first trip to Paradise and then I was hooked. Went up many times over the years but never got to a game with my dad and bought my first season ticket 5s easons ago but my one regret was never getting to go to a game with my old man again.
