Smith ignoring SFA ban must force SPL and SFA into action

Walter Smith was caught by TV pictures breaking an SFA ban from the “vicinity of the player’s tunnel” during yesterday’s game against Dundee United.

Smith can be seen apparently trying to illegally influence the outcome of the game in breach of the SFA Refereeing & Disciplinary rules.

Last month we highlighted when Smith raised an arm to the fourth official in a game against Hibernian at Ibrox, which the SFA failed to take action against. His apparent immunity from rules lesser mortals are obliged to observe seems to have been emboldened the Rangers manager; however, deliberately seeking to illegally influence the outcome of a game is a serious matter.

This will embarrass the SFA, who could do without the mess one of their major clubs being accused of cheating will create. This SPL cannot be seen to ignore cheating and must investigate and punish those responsible by docking three points.

No chance strachan is finished and he will walk. The fans will not allow him to stay.

My two brothers were at the Leith Celtic supporters dance in edinburgh saturday night and from the speakers platform John Hughes called for strachan to go.

Pressley was appalled and tried to counter this but the room shouted him down.

When this happens the fans have turned

    Strachan must go.

He must not be allowed to ruin our club any further.

Ps if you knew anything about celtic you would know how big that supporters club is rather than insult them.

    Hi Paul,

Have avoided the blog as the fall out was all too predictable, undoubtedly a few “long–time reader but just had to come on to say sack Strachan” posts have appeared.

I’ve not read through all the threads Paul, but I’m saddened to see you’ve now turned on Gordon.

I’m not blind. I know he has made mistakes (especially this season). I said as much last week, but come on! Two doubles and twice in the last 16? Surely he’s earned one more season to try and put it right. We are a young team who would improve next season even with no new recruits! You and I know that my opinion is based 99% on television coverage of games (I’ve never hidden that from anyone on here), so I would not for one second claim that I know more than anyone on this blog but (IMO) on MANY occasions this season we have played well but failed to finish. With a bit of luck in a few games this season I don’t think we would be hearing these calls for the manager’s head.

Some people constantly talks of his “dud” signings like Graveson, Jarosik, SBrown, JVOH etc, I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure I remember these signings being universally hailed by the same fans. But because it didn’t work out they become “Strachan’s duds”. No blame on the players themselves??

The league, I accept, is ALMOST gone. But until it is mathematically impossible I will live in hope. However, IF we are to turn it round we need McGeady on the right and Robson on the left. Nakamura shouldn’t even get within sight of the bench for the rest of the season. He’s not what we need for the fight.

I live in hope that we can still win this league, and I live in hope that Gordon will lead us next season. He’s earned the right to.

A quick comment directed for “TGFITW” on Saturday (you know who you are). You guys must be so proud of yourselves. Personally, what you did makes me sick to my stomach.
Someone said earlier “be careful what you wish for”. I couldn’t agree more.

Paul, I've no doubt that there is more than an element of mischievousness concerning your urging the docking of three points. Unfortunately, it won't be interpreted that way by all. Focus less on Smith and concentrate on the tactical prowess of our present incumbent, Mr Strachan. My, the mischief is contagious !!

Regarding the suspension. I thought that this also covered the changing rooms but there is no mention of that in the SFA rules.

I seem to remember a big deal being made about Jose Morinho a few years ago in the Champions League when he was suspended from the touchline. This suspension also covered the changing rooms and there were rumours going about that he was in their hiding and that if UEFA delegates had known they would have thrown the book at him.

The reason I ask is that after the match last week, the rangers players mentioned that Wattie was in the changing rooms at half time giving instructions. If this is another breach of the rules surely a 6 point deduction would be more applicable.

    Guys,

I too think it is inevitable. I think we will see a new manager next season. I just think Gordon has earned the right to try and fix things. Just my opinion that's all. I honestly do not think Mark Hughes would be a "step up" (for HIM yes. For US no)

I'd prefer to keep Gordon. (Unless of course Jose wanted it. Then I'd offer to help pack Gordon's bags and drive him to the airport!) :-)

Also, I understand THE PEOPLE who sang that on Saturday paid to get in. I just don't think they deserve to be allowed into Celtic park. At least not the HOME section! Again though, just my opinion.

Why should Paul not point out an obvious infringment of the rules on a site that is all about Celtic and what goes on that has an impact/effect on the environment in which we play.

I think we have debated to death now the pro's and cons about the manager and until the club determines what if any changes need to be made then I for one welcome additional topics as without reasoned debate the arguments tend to become stale and attacks levelled of a sometimes personal nature which don't help anyone!

I posted yesterday asking what was the punishment in sending a manager to the stand when that is his normal preferred viewing position.

The handling of the whole incident involving the fourth official and Mixu would laughable if it weren't so typical of SFA justice.

It should not be allowed to stand. This is a matter for every club in the country who has had their manager banished.

Don't you think that by now everyone who has an opinion on Gordon Strachan has voiced same and we should now let matters take their course?

The arguments are just going back and forward with everyone repeating their oft stated views.

Failing that, why not just grab the torches and pitchforks and march on Kerrydale Street. You might even get your face in the papers.

Very impressive, I like your use of Pickett's charged in the Peach Orchard at the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg with our Manager's plight. I'm a historian buff and the American Civil War is a particular favourite of mine, if you got time read the three volumes of Shelby Foote's definitive history of the Civil War.

But I think Pyrrhus of Epirus is a more apt analogy with our manager's plight than Pickett's Charge.

BANNED and sent to the stands, means just that,BANNED.
Not in the dug-out,or in the tunnel, but parked on his bahooky in the Stand,end-off.

This would be picked up,and made Headline News if it happened in any other Footballing Nation in the World.
I doubt if it will be even be mentioned in the Papers here in Scotland.
It should be by right,it's a Newsworthy story, and should be making News headlines in Scotlands Sports Pages, but I wont hold my breath.
They really do think their above the law.

I think Boyd's goal came from a back-pass and under new rules of offside I think its OK but then again the offside rule and all its permutations gives me a headache.

I would be more surprised if another flagrant disregard of the rules by the "establishment" merits a mention in the newspapers.

    Sir Paul

The infringement of the rules, which you have reported, will turn out to be..rather predictably, a non event.

Mr. Smith is liberally coated with Du Pont's Magic Skin.

    Elliot Ness?

    Eat yer heart out!

    Back to Maverick...

As you know I am of the UNUSUAL opinion, that all of Celtic's Losses and disappointing results recently, could/have been attributed to the inefficiencies of the Celtic Players in not accepting and cashing in,on many a Goal Scoring Opportunity which have peppered throughout, many of their losing disappointments.

That opinion of mine, appears to stand Alone, vis a vis a sea of recriminations against the Present Celtic Pilot as espoused, by fellow forum fellows.

Surprisingly, that reason, which I have put forth, in my naivete it seems, has turned out to be an extremely rare and unobserved opinion,in the minds of my fellow contributers.

Those same contributers are of the unflinching and oft repeated cry...that all or most of the daunting and distressful trials and tribulations that have now been visited on us fans...are the fault of the Mr.Strachan.

That being said...in order to further bolster my unshakable opinion on who is/are the real culprit/culprit and who is/are responsible for our hard times..... read this...

I know am going out on a limb in saying what I am about to say...
But Frankly, my dear...I don't give a damn...

I predict that the Next Meeting between Celtic and Motherwell... which is upcoming... will result in an over whelming victory for the good guys!

    Goals?

Yes, there will be goals...and from US.... Aplenty!

Now,when that occurs... who will be identified as the saviour?

Will it be, as I have proposed, entirely due to the sterling efforts of the Players?...

    Or..

Will this resounding and triumphant victory, by us, be due to the sudden re-birth of Mr.Strachan's soccer nous?

    A Puzzlement?

    I don't think so...

I would term it to be .....

    an

    "I told ye so!"....

    If I ever saw one!

If Gordon Strachan is in charge of our club next season we will be in serious bother, he has painfully demonstrated that he does not possess the guile to get us out of this mess, however by virtue of his tactically naivety, poor man management skills and transfer market acumen he will have no bother getting us in to another one. Think of the Cup performances, 10 man Mothewell at home, St Mirren, ICT away etc.

Yes he was brilliant in his first two seasons, but that was when the fod were rock bottom. If Wattie can resurrect their fortunes so dramatically - the Treble no less - with such meagre resources (Daily, Weirie, Darchy) what will he do when he gets some serious money?

The banners at Ibrox proclaiming “Strachan must stay”, that must tell you something, they would love him to stay, a vote of confidence by the board, that would just make their season for them. A glorious treble to celebrate during the summer whilst contemplating more of the same next season.

For me this is no knee jerk reaction, its been a long long painful time in coming to this conclusion, if it walks like a lame duck.....

I don't know what punishments have been given out in cases of this in the past, if there is a precedent for removing points from the team involved then fair enough. Tell me though wouldn't you feel the title was tainted if you only lifted it due to Rangers having points taken from them?

I'm afraid I have to agree with malceye not only about today's thread but of late as a whole our support is starting to look bitter and petty about losing. Let me clarify it up I always think we should hate losing and take it badly too but we are beginning to sound like we are looking for every excuse going for why we might not win the league this year (I won't throw the towel in till it is near impossible for us to win).

I think this year we have have spent too much time concentrating on the huns, I as the next Tim likes a good laugh at the expense of the Ugly Hun but the truth of the matter is that if we go on to lose the league it is not because of a masonic conspiracy (Bhoy do I wish that this was true and we could prove it) it is because we have handed the league to the Huns without a fight. 11 lost points at home, 2 exits from domestic cups at home that's why and the really sad bit is that we have yet to play the huns at home this year.

If we lose the league this year our home record is the main culprit, we haven't scored at home, is it four games now without a goal? disgraceful that is. Everybody can share the blame for our home record, from the players and the manager to the board and our support. We win Collectively and take the blame Collectively.

    Mon the Hoops.

Ritchie Donovan - I couldnt give two flying leaps what you think of me or what you consider acceptable. Our manager is a talentless dud who has been found out at the first sniff of a hun challenge and many of our players have no bottle, stomach, too little talent and arent worthy of the hooped jersey.

    Dear all,

Uncle Walter would not have been giving instuctions and a half time team talk had he not been assured by the SFA that this would go unpunished. He may be many things but daft he is not.

Once you learn this principle then you can apply it to a whole host of situations. For example, would Cuellar have close-lined the DU player in the cup final had not been given instruction to do so from his manager? Of course not - would he have got away with that challenge whilst playing in spain against Real Madrid?

    StevieS, it’s the cruellest blow.

What would you say to the man who would have:

    Sacked Jock Stein in 1974,
    Sacked Brian Clough in 1980,
    Sacked Martin O’Neill in 2004?

After this point in each of the above’s careers, it was downhill. It was impossible to know this at the time, but it would have been better all round for each to move on at that point.

Managers, like players, have a shelf life. It pains me to read some of what has been written about Gordon here (heaven forbid he “inflicts” more championships on us), but having given the matter considerable thought I believe now is the time for him to move on.

Gordon J, if the SFA do not take action they leave me no alternative that they are corrupt and inept.

    Lennondinho, deleted, shocker.

Kojo, aye, we’ll win with goals aplenty, but can I pick the team?

    Hanif, it’s only fair.

Edward, cheating is cheating and must be dealt with severely. Deduct 10 points.

Itzallova, I certainly am not. Deduct 15 points and tear down a stand.

I sang Strachan GTF at the weekend. Like the many others who did, it was born of pure frustration. We have been watching crap for the last 3 years, interspersed by a couple of good runs where it looked like we might be able to play the football GS seems to think we play every week.

Strachan has to go and we the fans told the board that....I was not particularly happy at having to sing it but I felt it was the only option available to me. I am sure that 90% of the others singing felt the same.

To be labelled a hun by people who were not even at the game.....no comment

ref Smith....don't expect any action to be taken, but to be honest with a half-decent manager this year Smith and the huns would be an irrelevance

Cheating is cheating and should always be punished. Of course we know to our cost that there are two sets of rules in this country, but it will be interesting to see how Duffield and the SFA play this one.

What is interesting is to compare the two offences. In the first offence, the Mixu incident, the manager was guilty and was punished personally. And correctly so.

But in the second offence the manager is clearly guilty and the team sought to gain an advantage through his transgression. Now this is comparable with situations where rules have been broken by, for example, a team fielding an ineligible player. In those cases the team is punished not the individual responsible.

And I have not had a reply as yet to my e-mail from yesterday asking the SFA how the incident will be investigated.

On the present thread, and to answer Ed's query about "tainted" titles, Yes I probably would be embarrassed to win a title in such circumstances. Howefer, that should not preclude Celtic, or any other SPL club for tha matter, pointing out that Smith has simply ignored his ban, thumbed his nose at the football authorities and issued a challenge of "Look at me. What do you think you can do about it?" Unless of course, as someone else has pointed out, he's already been told on the QT, that there will be no comebacks.
Meanwhile, something else is still puzzling me. I've posted it here before and don't think anyone has given me an answer, if they know. If anyone has , my apologies.
When Novo was red carded V Hibs for violent conduct, did that 12 point red card not immediately put him over the threshold and mean an additional two game ban? It was widely reported as such at the time.

Meanwhile...Kojo..how are you. Do you never sleep.
You posted @ 1626..." I predict that the Next Meeting between Celtic and Motherwell... which is upcoming... will result in an over whelming victory for the good guys!

    Goals?

Yes, there will be goals...and from US.... Aplenty!

Now,when that occurs... who will be identified as the saviour?

Will it be, as I have proposed, entirely due to the sterling efforts of the Players?...

    Or..

Will this resounding and triumphant victory, by us, be due to the sudden re-birth of Mr.Strachan's soccer nous?"

Frankly Kojo, the answer will be neither. A week too late is a week too late in any man's language.

If we win this league, this season, it will not be the work of a saviour. It will be because, the Huns have imploded and thrown it away. Not a pleasurable thing to say, but true nonetheless.

I'll persist with the 78-79 Season reflections if it's okay

    7 April 1979

On the day Celtic announced they would listen to offers for Alfie Conn, the Bhoys hosted Partick Thistle in front of 19,000 spectators. The increasingly influential Mike Conroy opened the scoring for The Sons of Dan (not Diamond Dan) in the 7th minute and Andy Lynch sealed the win on the hour mark. 2-0 but a difficult fixture ahead at Tannadice.

    Behooped -

    Latchford, McGrain, Edvaldsson, Aitken, Lynch;
Conroy, MacLeod, Burns, Provan, Davidson, Doyle.

    Bejagged -

    Rough, McKinnon, Campbell (Houston), Anderson, Whittaker;
O'Hara, Gibson, Love, Melrose (Somner), McAdam, Park.

A few Hoops-or-huns-to-be in the Bin Bags line-up. No strikers in ours !!

    My dear friend.... Davie67 @ 15.62.

I have read your conclusions and your reasons for placing the Entire Blame of our misfortunes on Mr. Strachan.

Your opinion is as valid as my own.. to that I must own.

Nevertheless...Mr.Strachan... in my opinion, has done an outstanding job.

Furthermore, nothing you or anyone else will ever say ..... can change the following HISTORICAl FACTS...that map out what Mr.Strachan has indeed achieved for us.

Under the reins of Mr.Strachan we have done the Following... again... All Historical Facts.

We have WON the S.P.L. ...not once..... but TWICE!...
and in SUCCESSIVE SEASONS, no less!
We have won the Scottish League Cup...and the Scottish Cup...as well.

We have squared the circle... in having ....for the Foist Time in the present Eu League, set-up....
    REACHED THE SWEET SIXTEEN round.

Not too shabby... I would say...

But, as I have been told many a time by my colleagues..

"The Trouble with you, Kojo... you CONFUSE the issue ...every time..
by sticking to those darn FACTS!

The following is my sole opinion, and therefore, unsurprisingly, is well slanted in favour of my own sentiments....

Mr.Strachan has been hung out to dry... by the unfortunate diminuation in effort and determination ,coupled by a COMPLETE AND UTTER LOSS OF FORM...by several hitherto... excellent and reliable goal Providers for our team.
    The goals have mysteriously...
    Dried up...

Suddenly, as if by the wave of a magical wand...

    Celtic Players...EN MASSE....

    Have lost their Form!
    and with it Their Way!

    Ask any kid this question...

If a team has lost the ability to take their goal-scoring chances...not in the odd game.. but for a whole Procession of scoreless innings...what is the trouble with this outfit?

    That kid will tell ye......

"Hey pal... Ye need bettah Players....!!"

It will never dawn on the kid to blame the Manager for his Team's Deficiencies.

That is the opinion of the kid that I happened to speak to...possibly, the one that you will happen to ask, may tell you this .... and ....instantly!

"Hey Buddy, that Team needs a new Manager!...No question,he is a Duffer!...Gosh,I know that that particular Manager has brought you Major Successes over the last Two Years...but...Mister... I say it is definitely the Fault of the Manager..... Dump that clown...I say,I say!"

Now, I have said my piece....

    Kojo.
yer pal...who ,nevertheless, respects your opinion,to which you are more than entitled.

I realise the notion of them being docked three points has been mooted purely tongue in cheek.

However, it's worth looking at the rules surrounding touchline bans. I don't have them to hand, but I believe under SFA rules that it's still acceptable to be in touch with someone on the touchline by phone etc. and to be in the dressing rooms pre-game and half time.

For a guy who spends most of his time in the stand anyway, where's the punishment?

In Europe, all contact is forbidden - recall MON during his ban, completely cut off up in the stand. This is how it should be.

What makes it more interesting, is if this is really not a punishment for Smith, why did he still feel the need to flout it? Is he having fun?

I read on here last week a coment about the Celtic FC press room and their inability to gain positive press from these situatations. If our wretched media won't highlight and cover these subjects then why don't we. I know we will get accused of parinioa but only initially then people will have to take notice, this season alone there have been many incidents highlighting the injustice in our game. We need to make our own noises, coming from the club. For instance does any one know if Celtic FC have asked the police/rankers to explain why the vodoo banner was even allowed through the gates last week?
Come on Celtic if you can't ask questions on the pitch at least ask them through the press room!!

    G Smith
    D Hebertson
    D McVicar

Now what one of the above would you trust to bring a case against their first love?

As in the Finance scandal Europe-wide, Porto and Juventus may have been found out but tell if rangers were involve in anything illegal who would be willing to go out on a limb and blew the whistle on them?

I'll probably be slaughtered (again) for that which follows but you know what we ALSO need ?

A big dollop of luck. I'll take any kind (sounds like the real ale fiesta!).

    Bremenesque goalkeeping howlers

A return to the own goals which were a feature of the start of the season.

Dundee Unitedesque suicide backpases (preferably in successive matches)

    Jammy deflections

An alsation to run on and scare their goalie excrementless.

Wind changing direction suddenly and blowing the ball into their net.

    Neutral match officials.

Rogue crisp pokes getting tangled in the keeper's studs.

We've got the four-leaved clover but it disny seem to attract much luck.

I'm not excusing recent performances but we could be doing with a rub of the green.

It's usually said when a striker goes through a bad run that all he needs is teh ball to go in teh net (Whether it be off his backside!!!) and the goals would start to flow.

I think our team needs this at present and we need to do it before the other team scores. Not because it would change our gameplan but it would mean they would need to come out and we would have the chance to go at them more.

Don't think Strachan can be saved but I'd like to see him given time and support!

    Kojo @ 17.35,

Interesting point, however, a good manager would have anticipated the possibility that the Scott Mac / JVOH double act may dry up at some point, and he would have had a plan B, either to get more goals out of our midfield by changing them around, perhaps a change of tactics, or new strikers, possibly Derek Riordan, the young guy Ben brought in from Middleboro, or maybe even Gorgeous George.

He would have had some strategy in place for the inevitable. But no, out guy perseveres with the same tried and failed permutation, something different was needed, but not forthcoming. Now who carries the can for that? How many times have we played with 4 defenders against 1 attacker when we have been behind and chasing a game? How many times have you watched him make substitutions way way too late in the game?

it’s not all down to Scott Mac and JVOH, they have scored their fair share this season but when they
