Spain and Germany back FA PL 39th game plan

I had a ‘you know where this is heading’ moment when I read that Roca Perez, CEO of the Spanish league and Tom Bender, Bundesliga marketing director, both spoke out in favour of the FA Premier League’s plans to play a 39th game abroad each season at this week’s Soccerex Forum.

Competing leagues would only support such a move if they had a notion to participate in the land-grab exercise themselves. It’s like 19th Century European Imperialism all over again.

This is a predatory move which will further undermine the meritocratic roots of football. The ‘39th game’ proposition is football’s equivalent of the Sudetenland and must be rejected, although I would be intrigued to hear how Spanish and German clubs would react to the FA Premier League arranging games in Madrid, Valencia, Munich and Hamburg.

On another unralated topic... My mate is an Iranian, hes just back from spending his first 2 weeks there since being born. You'll love this.

The street where the british embassy is used to be called churchill Street, in 1980 they changed the name to Bobby Sands Street.

Jims also a big Celtic fan and wore the hoops a few times whilst out there, said every where he went when he had the hoops on he was mobbed by kids shouting "Henrick Larsson" and "Celtic" to him. Class.

He has 39 cousins !! most of them now own Celtic tops and are talking about starting the first (I think) Iranian CSC.. Brilliant. Made my day that.

This maybe an option for the SPL, aggange future Glasgow derby title deciders abroad, as they are so afraid of the problems caused in glasgow they garrymander fixtures. Or are they affraid this would also show the host country and the rest of the world how refereeing in scotland has caused such outrage.
I know its not an option but if it ever were, I doubt the SPL would take it up for the reason above.

Re the playing of Old Firm games abroad - was it not an Ajax coach/scout who in 1996 commented that his trip to watch Rangers in an Old Firm game was a waste of time because there is no way a European referee would so obviously favour one team? You remember the game? Tosh McKinlay gets knocked over and accidentally touches the ball with his hand - second yellow Thomas ta ta! Gough brings down Di Canio in the area as last man - play on advantage to Celtic!

Liam Brady was another outsider who succumbed to this virulent strain of the paranoia virus.

Paul67 :- I agree with you 100% on this one (not very often I get to say that on one of your articles :-) I think the plans are a disgrace and would hope that all the smaller associations would refuse them permission to play these games on grounds that come within their jurisdiction.
I would also hope that the lesser lights of the EPL would try to fight this, lets face it it isn't going to be Bolton v Wigan being played abroad.
I would also wonder what would happen if for instance a team has qualified for the C.L after the conventional season is finished and then lose that place because of the extra game played somewhere abroad. They may get the initial boost of revenue for that one game but lose out on a huge C.L payout.

This is the first report I have seen with comments from the "big countries" on the 39th game idea. I wonder if there is any significance that this is only Germany and Spain giving backing and that Italy and France are missing as yet. Unfortunately, I do not see a split in this group forthcoming and this preposterous idea of the 39th game will become far more likely.

bmx, you are correct. There was a move a while back for us to play Hearts in Australia. There was also at the same time talk about a Glasgow derby being played outside Scotland.

Yesterday, I noticed the resurrection of Billy Urquhart as a poster boy....the first time that the phrase "rearing its ugly head" has not merely been figurative

I don't suppose that the Portuguese player "saved" by the fans in desperate need for a new image, was in actual fact a heavily tanned Scot with a villa in France - or am I just paranoid ?

As for the 39th game - where are these to be played ? I think that this attempted global domination will backfire - eventually. You don't have to be right wing to be nationalistic as countries in South America have shown. In short, these games and the teams competing will become a symbol of capitalism at its crassest. They will be actively opposed and ultimately end in failure.

    Ed The Bear,

Not sure if that's the proposed method of this 39th game. My understanding (Which could very easily be wrong!) is that all teams will play a 39th round of matches. These matches will not be the big yins, for example Liverpool v Man U, but more likely, Chelsea v Wigan, Villa v Sunderland. Therefore all teams play abroad with an opportunity to increase fan base.

These games would also be carried out over teh course of a season and not as 1 big round of matches obn a "Last Day".
More likely to be one overseas game per week type scenario.

Like I said, not definite but this was my interpretation.

There is so much wrong with this idea of the 39th game.
Will the results go towards the league standings?
Will it in fact be the 39th game i.e. the last game of the season? in which case, for fairness, should they all kick off at the same (GMT)time?
Will Wigan's and Birmingham's games not go abroad for lack of demand?
Will TV insist on the most attractive pairings (MU Chelsea Arsenal and Liverpool) or will they allow the EPL equivalent of a Carla Bruni, Billy Urquhart pairing?
If Liverpool have to play MU 3 times but Everton only have to play MU twice, is that not unfair on Liverpool in the race for 5th place?
Would it be like post split SPL where the top 4 teams after 38 games are guaranteed a top 4 finish though where in the top 4 can be decided by the 39th game?

The money has made them lose all sight of what this football thing is all about. Unfortunately, it is no great shock that the EPL/FA would come up with this. These are the same people who sent MU to play in a daft meaningless tournament rather than let them defend the English FA Cup.

    Ed,

Our teams' limited revenue streams certainly call for a move forward in all existing and new markets and I'm not sure how opposed I would be for Celtic to take 'a game' abroad. Obviously, the fact that it's competitive is the real problem as we regularly play friendlies abroad.

However this is not something I would want the SFA to welcome. We don't need additional teams coming into our 'backyard' and taking revenue from Scottish Clubs. TBH I don't think either Celtic or Rangers would be the ones to suffer immediatley (Possibly longer term), I believe it to be the 2nd tier if you like, (Aberdeen Hearts etc). Come and go fans may be more attracted by Man U at Hamden than Hibs at Pitodrie. This would be a disaster for the league IMO and any more distraction from our league cannot be welcomed.

AbMucker - I'm not sure you are correct about the 39th game. My understaning was it was going to be exhibition games that do not affect the league standings. Think about it. There are only 20 teams in the league so a 39th game would mean having to play 18 clubs twice and one other club three times.

I agree that the whole thing goes against the integrity of the game [can I use that word or has it been claimed by the huns? ;0) ]

the kindly cynic in me says of the DR story - "how opportune!"

The DR did not of course expose the disgraceful scenes of Barcelona. But they and Sir Moonbeams of Debtridden Hall are acutely aware that the Spanish press filleted them. This "story" where the fans applied skills learned in the Boys Brigade (a god fearing institution) is simply to too good to be true.

In other words, it sounds like a John Smeaton !!

    Cadizzy,

I actually have to agree with your initial post and the absurdity of the idea as a competitive fixture.

    Tony Bananas,
This fits in with your comment on the same. But why call it a 39th game if it's going to be simply a run of friendlies over the course of the year?
I also don't think they would need to gain too much permission to play a friendly in most contries as they already do this during the summer months. (I think it's been rejected already in a Middle East Country as well as Australia....maybe! This would tell me it's more than a friendly)

I'm sure this has been spoken about as competitive fixtures, hence the reason it's so different.

Would be instead of the pre-season friendlies (theres no friendlies in football) and the much maligned League cups (the league cup IS important to this club)...

Would be to play an early Season World or European club Cup where you could still have a Celtic v Melbourne Victory game or Arsenal v Terhan Celtics play but it would mean something... The Final/Finals would be played At Xmas in the said Hot Country's...

Maybe even during our winter shutdown...........

CHELSEA star Paulo Ferreira collapsed at Lisbon airport just hours after watching his side’s victory over Fenerbahce.

The Portuguese right-back, 29, was signing autographs for Rangers fans travelling to their UEFA Cup tie with Sporting when he slumped unconscious.

One fan said: “He came round after a couple of minutes and said he hadn’t eaten anything since the day before.

“I think he was quite embarrassed and didn´t want any fuss.”

I noticed a wee story on NewsNow, where Rod Stewart mentioned that he'd like to see Messi & Tevez at Celtic.

Mmmm. Messi & Tevez to replace JVoH & Skippy? Yes, I think so... go on then Rod, make our day!

Oh, and while you're at it, please can we have Cristiano Ronaldo to replace Naka?!

The Belfast man , who was viciously attacked by loyalist thugs , Mr McNally , was not wearing a Celtic jersey.

He was attacked because he was a Catholic and was near or in company of friends wearing Celtic Jerseys.

I know who the guy is to see , He worked in the same place as me for a few months now and I am nearly sure he is originally Scottish.

The thugs in question were wearing Linfield regalia , accompianied by a few english daytrippers (alledgedly , though its up for debate). The grouping are being attributed to a Linfield hooligan element Section F.

Interestingly enough SDLP councillor Martin Morgan deems the wearing of Celtic and Rangers jerseys in the city Center is inflammatory and it should be a neutral venue for colours.

Martin Morgan had to be reminded that Celtic and rangers jerseys had nothing to do with the assault on an innocent bystander who's only crime was he was percieved to be a Catholic by a group of loyalist thugs.

Interestingly enough his comments come as his party ratifiy a bill for human rights in Northern Ireland promoting equality for all and no discrimation or sectarianism.

Yet he wishes to discriminate and demonise Celtic fans for wearing their colours in their own city.

    Typical politician.

BigLiam :- Thanks for clarifying that, I don't know how it was ported in Belfast but over here almost every report said he was wearing a Celtic top and that's where the confusions comes from.
Not that it should make any difference in what was a horrific attack on a young man by a crowd of rabid thugs.

There was a story in the Belfast Telegraph a couple of days ago saying that he is still critically ill in hospital.

Lets all hope and pray that he makes a full recovery. We've had far too many senseless killings in this part of the world.

Fellow Celts. First time blogger on here. Long time fan. First game 1969 8-1 against Thistle. Old enclosure. Bobby Lennox reached 100 goals and my brother bust his chin falling of a stantion.

Been through a lot as a Tim and firmly believe that this season and the fans reactions are a result of our success since the time of Wim.

We've been a wee bit spoiled. After all it's the first time in seven years that we've been this far behind.

Is it just me or have Celtic's troubles this season coincided with the appointment of Blairs bouncer.

Would it be too simplistic to say that HE is the reason for so many empty seats? He may have been voted in with the Big Business block vote but the petition against him was huge.

On another more topical vein...are we hoping for a Rangers defeat tonight thus forcing them to play thier pre-split games in those blank mid-weeks or a win and the ensuing fixture pile-up chaos.

For me the first would be the best option for TWO (quite obvious) reasons.

    1. Something to cheer about
    2. Less chance of the SPL arranging things to help them

Is Boltonbhoy around? It's your wee brother here... and it wisnae him that fell from the stantion.

Bazzabhoy: My mate Gholam founded the first Iranian CSC although he is a London based exile. Seriously I'm sure he would love to be in contact with some fellow Iranian Tims.

Here's a headline from the Telegraph.
"Barry Robson confused by Celtic role"

Here is what Barry Robson is quoted as saying. Can any reader spot where Barry refers to confusion rather than saying that things have gone as expected?

"It's been pretty hard for me at Celtic so far," Robson said. "Since I came to the club, it's taken me time to settle in and force my way into the manager's plans. Of course, it's still early days but I've only made seven or eight appearances. It's a massive club, though, and I've been enjoying it.

"I've scored a couple of goals against Aberdeen and Barcelona and I think I have done okay when I have played. I'll just have to wait for my chance to establish myself in the side but, to be honest, I always expected it to be like this.

"The manager brought me here as a wide player. Aiden has been outstanding and Naka has done well, too. These are the two guys I'm fighting to get a place."

I don't know if any of you watched Sky's coverage of the CL games last night but Glenn Hoddle said something that struck a chord with me.

During his time as Chelsea manager he took over a club that had no success since the CWC victory in 1971. He reckoned they had the most passionate fans in London but since Abramovich took over and they have been successful this passion has died away and as Ray Wilkins put it, Stamford Bridge was like a library on Tuesday night nad has been for a lot of this season. They both put it down to success being expected and the "go on entertain me" type of support that this has brought.

Do we suffer from the same syndrome in all but CL games? It seems to be a trait at Highbury/Ashburton Grove, Old Trafford and Ibrox. Does winning constantly breed a support who expect victory and will only get behind their team when winning is assured?

I listened to that interview. Robson claimed that he was enjoying himself his time here and that the manager has taught him a lot already. He claimed that he has no right to get straight into the team as Nakamura and McGeady as class players and that he was taking a little time to adjust to a new system etc. He also said that Gordon was dong a brilliant job and calls should be about him having his contract extended not going. Also saying the dressing room was good and training was great that day.

God knows how they managed to find a negative headline out of all the things he said. They must have got that headline from some other (non-existent) interview he done.

Bloody hell, the press can be so infuriating.
