One Star Means More:
That is exactly what the treaty of Arbroath was all about. On the 6th April 1320.
Just like the Easter Uprising in Dublin 1916 and that long awaited and most welcome proclamation of the Irish.
It was the Scottish Proclamation of Independence.
The Boyne and the Papacy - 370 odd years later - was a different story altogether.

Hail, hail
The only thing Celtic can and must do is three points from every remaining game.
In about two/three weeks there is going to an almighty rattle at ibrox, a combination of injury, match schedules and DunUtd, Hibs and Well looking for three points in every game they play, whether against Rangers or us.
I am genuinely looking forward to this.

You've just made my day, Paul. I do so hope that scenario pans out. That must be worth a couple of points to us.
Still, I can't hope for them to beat Fiorentina, no matter how much it might help us indirectly. I want them beaten each and every time they play and preferably by 7-1.

The night cap was history about three hours ago.
The missus has been nagging me to get to bed since long before then -

Again and again and again and again.
And again, and again and again and again.
And again, and again and again and again.
That was some win my man.
Quite a few of our guys stood up and were counted.
I'll have one last drink to them and to the support who supported.

can you tell us what is required for the season to be extended...do the sfa have to give permission....can any one body alone make this decision ? are the spl able to extend the season without the agreement of all member clubs...is a simple majority enough to provide an extension....if the spl can make this decision without individual clubs agreeing, who within the spl makes the decision...does the tv contract run beyond the season end? can 2 clubs unilatteraly agree to play a game between them after the nominated final game
is it lex gold? ian blair?
can we veto any such decision, can we or any other club appeal it?
i think it's important to get the infrastructure surrounding any potential decision into the public domain

Afternoon Gents...
First time poster, long time reader
After Wednesday we should fear noone. They in turn will fear us.
WGS has my support as it is clear that certain players havent turned up for him this season.
He has a long term plan and he will be accutely aware of the players to be moved on after this season.
We need to sign a new "Captain". Arguably Robson could do it as his commitment the other night showed he wont bottle anything.
I like the look of Hinkel...is his improving performances also improving Caldwell?
We do need a new left back as Nayls has been poor all season and he is putting additional pressure on McManus which is then extending over to Caldwell...How many goal have we conceded this season through the Naylor McManus channel?
Anyway lets get right behind the team tomorrow as we did on Wednesday. Do the hard work in the first 45 instead of the last 10.

Again I watched NakaGhod score and a wee thought went through my mind:
howd oawn a wee minute... is he 'Celtic Minded'.
-
A wee rant.
The Daily Record are suffering the consequences of their years of aggressive anti Celtic reporting, they've lost thousands of readers of our persuasion.
They have only one course of action now, side with the other lot, or go out of business.
There is absolutely no chance of any derogatory reporting of the huns,it just wouldn't be good business acumen to support any other team.
They wont be outwardly aggressive towards other teams, other than Celtic.
But they've nailed their colours to the mast,so to speak, and they must tread softly, and hope they don't offend they're chosen cell mates,it must be like walking on broken glass, trying to write something good about Rangers all the time.
If they do cross the bridge, and defame Rangers in any way, their lot would boycott the paper, and it would fold in months.
So, you can see they must be on the side of Rangers,at all times.
Minty is there to see that they toe the party line.
Thats the kind of predicament they've got themselves in,and I can't see the answer to that predicament.
Celtic will always be thrown a few scraps,to keep the few thousand that still read their rag, happy.
Radio Clyde, is in exactly the same boat.
I wouldn't like Celtic to have a red top exclusively reporting only the good things, and sweeping all the dirt under the Carpet.

Some sad news for the music lovers on the site.
"DANNY FEDERICI
"Danny and I worked together for 40 years - he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much...we grew up together."
—Bruce Springsteen
"Danny Federici, for 40 years the E Street Band's organist and keyboard player, died this afternoon, April 17, 2008 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City after a three year battle with melanoma.
"The Federici family and the E Street family request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund. A web site for the Fund is being established and we'll post its link when it is on line.
"Bruce Springsteen's concerts scheduled for Friday in Ft. Lauderdale and Saturday in Orlando performance are being postponed. Replacement dates will be announced shortly."
Danny is in my thoughts tonight as is our own Tommy Burns.

arcabhoy,
I´m not trying to be cheeky here mate but the answer to your question is St. Mirrens travel agent
They make the rules up as they go along.
Remember when Gretna agreed to cancel their game against Rangers for the sake of Scottish football and in the self same week Aberdeen asked Motherwell who said "non". The SPL told all and sundry its up to the clubs to agree.
4 weeks late Dundee Utd and Hearts both agree that they dont want to play after Phil O´Donnels passing having just witnessed it. The SPL stated
"Dundee Utd are playing Rangers in 3 days time whether they like it or not, regardless to what we have said previously we want them knackered before they play Rangers as we always struggle against them."
A lot of mediocre masons are going to see their careers stagnate because of this one.
The Tow Jimmies on the last day of the season with nothing to play for and half a squad that has already moved on in their minds is 3 points for them.
Hence why we must hammer them good and proper ... for the lie doon they ´ll be taking on the 18th May

Celtic were in full control of a quiet Old Firm game. It did not require anything special to beat a Rangers side who created only 2 genuine chances throughout the 90 minutes. MacDonald's command in the air nullified the dangerous flighted passes of McLean, and Aitken mastered the ground attacks.

Perception doesn’t make it true, it’s simply how you feel based on your experience.
Never the less a great question, and I believe they genuinely feel they get a raw deal from the media and that we get an easy ride. I’m sure they could come up with umpteen examples of the media being friendly towards us, just as we could come up with other examples if we decide to take the opposite view.
Left a question for you on the last thread if you get a minute, no big deal if you haven't the time.

Sir Paul
In every crisis there ever be,lies the prospect for advancement and opportunity!
Ye dinnae think so?
Well, Ah Dae!
The Carding of Mr. Caldwell is our chance to Blood the Best Young Center Backing prospect,to come up the river, since Billy McNeill!
Scott Cuthbert is his name...
And ...
Closing Down Strikers, is His Game!
I have never seen Scott lose an aerial duel!
Not only that, his well won header...9 times out of 10... Is directed skilfully, to a friendly COLLEAGUE!
One may think that that skill is no a big deal...
But, I believe..most sincerely... that it.... IS, A BIG DEAL!
Mr.McManus, wins his share of Heading Duels,in fair number, but he immediately negates his fine woik,by heading his hard won interception... direct and unerringly .... to a grateful opponent...and... Bingo!
We are immediately under the cosh, again!
Daft? Of course, it's Daft!
In the case of Mr.McManus, this debilitating Mis- Judgment, which he demonstrates with some regularity...only saps our defensive system...and further strengthens my conclusion, that he should not be in our team... in the FOIST PLACE!
Bobo, should not Play against Aberdeen.
We already know, all there is to know, about his strengths and weaknesses.
Against Aberdeen, we should eagerly grasp this chance to find out,if Mr.Cuthbert is the potential Defensive Saviour, that we are in such a dire need!

Itzallova, the term hun when referring to a Rangers fan has been around for many many many... a year. Fans of all clubs in Scotland use this term when referring to them. It is only in the last 5 years that they "the huns" have tried to register this word under the secterian bracket. I am in contact daily with a number of huns and although they do not like being called huns as they think it is has secterian undertones in their eyes (note - this has only been they case in last few years), I have never once heard any of them take offence because they think I am calling them a nazi. But if the shoe fits. Only kidding on that one but there is a sizeable number of their away support who are actually nazi right wing white supremecists. Who's kidding who with the Red hand of Ulster sign. If that were true I would be the next male supermodel and I can gaurantee you I am a long way from being that.
Can't remember who told me this story and it could be made up garbage but someone once told me that the term hun was put on Rangers pre WW2 when Hitlers German national team, or the domestic team that the detestible Hitler supported were looking for a team from the British Isle's to play in a friendly match in Germany. They asked a number of clubs down south and were refused. Came to Scotland and asked the huns and they accepted. Hence how they got the term huns. I have never looked into this or am ever likely too, but I like that one. EdwardUrsus you may be able to coinfirm or deny. most probalby deny I imagine as it was probably made up.

I think the Daily Record would probably point the finger at the agressive marketing of the 'tartan tabloids' as more of a problem than any bhoycott.
The Sunday Herald on the other hand have much more to lose as they have a very precarious circulation figure as there a no sales outwith Scotland and that is probably very limited to the West

"Stephen McManus was also cautioned for his altercation with Barry Ferguson. The two captains collided, with television evidence showing McManus to have aimed a swing at Ferguson, who retaliated angrily. McManus' booking takes him to the 15-point threshold and one more caution will lead to an automatic ban."
Now I could be wrong as I have yet to see un-edited footage of the scuffle and handbag-fest but is this not somthing of a re-write and as such yet another piece of corrupted prose from another of the usual suspects.

STRACHAN BLASTS SFA OVER PROCEDURE
-
Paul67,
the league make the decision but they only act on behalf of the clubs requests.
I.e they asked Gretna on behalf of Rangers. Gretna said yes if Gretna said no like Motherwell did to Aberdeen. The SPL then carries the message back to the requesting club.Unless your playing Rangers next. As Dundee Utd. requested that the SPL ask Hearts having sounded Hearts out previously only for the SPL to say no.
So the SPL along with the SFA are Rangers football club protection racket. No bones about it

Itza - the personification of hatred that some of the dark side have for us is a difficult one to answer. I would need to write a dissertation to even attempt a satisfactory answer. I think it can be best summed up by saying that they hate a caricature of what they think a Celtic supporer is i.e.
an IRA supporting, alien, dole scrounger, or some similar notion.
Extremist behaviours e.g. Rangers' discriminatory signing policy, no catholics need apply employment practices etc.
haveing gone unchecked by the media until relatively recently, and even then in a half hearted manner have allowed this to fester for decades.
I think it boils down to ignorant people will believe what it is convenient for them to believe and no amount of evidence to the contrary will persuade them otherwise if it contradicts their agenda or their revellrey. This is true in all walks of life not just football or religious bigotry
The more extreme Celtic/timmy/fenian haters seem to view as us some sort of sub-human race fuelled by misconception and ignorance of history over the years.
To pick up your previous point about "go home ya huns" causing offence to them - I am familiar with equalities regulations which say that any racial slur that causes offence is sufficient for disciplinary action even if the slur was unintentional. However there is also the provision to be made concerning whether the statement itself constitutes a slur. I would compare the argument that "go home ya hun" is as offensive as "go home the famine is over", with the recent case of the baldy teacher who tried to sue the council. This unfortunate man had to leave employment as a teacher due to abuse suffered from pupils and contended that his follically challenged condition was in effect a disability. This was dismissed by a judge as absurd.
I would also compare the Rankers fans who contend that the media have an agenda against them as spoiled children. Once child me be upset because he is forced to eat rice and water for his dinner. Another because he didn't get an extra helping of ice cream after his three course meal in Frankie & Benny's. The emotional reaction of both may be roughly the same but this does not prove that the treatment of both children is ergo the same.
In essence, they are spoiled children who have had everything their own way for over a century. In their view this is proper because it is "their" country and "we" are aliens. I also think there is an element of seeing us by their own standards (after all we are scum compared to them) i.e. because nearly every chant/song/slogan they come up with embodies some sort of religious or racial hatred, then, in turn, our reference to "hun" MUST be a religious slur (after all we are just as bad as them remember). Similarly "the animals" in a Grand Old team MUST be some sort of religious jibe.
We are no angels and I am sure you are trying to get me to state that our behaviour e.g. "go home ya huns" contributes to their view. However I am convinced these views would persist whatever our behaviours so we shouldn't be cow-towed. Simply playing in green and white would be enough for some of them.
I play 5-a-sides with reasonably rational and educated guys
who would not be viewed as rampant bigots who simply refuse to wear a football kit containing any trace of the colour green. In another country this might be viewed as at best, eccentric and at worst, insane. In this country it is viewed as normal.
A bit of a rambling attempt to answer your question. I'm sure others could do a better job.
-
It would appear that what Neil Lennon and Ronnie Hawthorn were told was that Gary Caldwell was being reported to the S F A for violent contact.
Thye S F A now say that that is the same as an automatic red card and the club should have saught clarification.

He is a sad lonely pathetic figure and still a first class bigot.

My wife is from a protestant background but like me is no longer religious [I am atheist I'm not surw how my wife would describe herself] When my daughter was born one of my in-laws enquired as to whether we would be raising her as a catholic. When the answer was given in the negative his in-law expressed relief that "she won't get drawn into all that sectarian nonsense then".
The insidious sleekit side of bigotry eh? A tactic peculiar to Protestant bigots. Closely related to "it's all Catholic schools' fault".
My wife has a brother who will become a father soon. Needless to say this in-law hasn't expressed any concern that induction to the Church of Scotland may involve any "sectarian nonsense".
-
tony bananas,
A worthy contribution to the debate, although I think you give some of them too much credit by assuming they have a thought out position. It's not so much that they hate what they think a Celtic supporter is, but they hate the notion of "inferiors" in "their" country. The stereotype of an “IRA supporting, alien, dole scrounger” was created in attempt to justify their bigoted view of the world, not the reason for it.
The basic view they have is of the protestant supremacy in Scotland. Everything else follows from there. It is very similar to the Nazi view of the master race. And Rangers is the vehicle that they use to propagate their vile views.
Everyone in this country knows what that club stands for. The history is well documented. Refusing to wear green, or to have green straws in their stadium, may appear eccentric but it simply shows the depth of the hatred they have.
I posted a week or so ago about how boys (and a few girls) start following a club because their family and/or friends do. That’s only natural. But adults have the ability to make a choice. Those who stood in our stadium singing about the Famine were there by choice. They are part of the problem. They really are Scotland’s Shame.

I was listening to a rerun of Superscoreboard today - sad I know - and was disappointed at a number of Celtic fans who phoned in pooh poohing the criticism of the Naka banner. One said it "was abit of craic" - another was equally dismisive. Their reasoning behind their banner was that it was a reference to the fact that eating dog meat was a delicacy in certain countries in the Far East most notably Korea, but not Japan - leaving the banner carriers with some "good natured" egg on their faces due to their geographical ignorance. This reasoning has also been pouted on Radio.
Am I the only one to think differently? Was the banner not a reference - and I'm trying to chose my words carefully here - to the untrue and distasteful perception / joke that Chinese restaurants use stray dogs / cats etc for food? That was my take on the banner and I beleive radio pundits deliberately chose not to see it. It was not a bit of craic or anything as mild. It was outright and deliberate racist taunting.
Apologies if this has been posted earlier. Can I emphasise at this point ny abhorance at the banner and all its implications.

Nazz- Victoria Road is off Warwick Road, so not a major detour.
In 1916 the government were so concerned about the level of drunkenness in the huge Moorside factory around Gretna[ employing 25,000 people!] that they set up the Carlisle and District State Management Scheme, so effectively the Government was the landlord.
The scheme ran until the early 70s, and then was sold off into private hands, much to my dad's annoyance as he says the Nationalised Border Brewery was a good pint. As part of the scheme an architect called Redfern was invited to design a 'new model pub' with gardens etc of which the Magpie is a surviving example.
Anyways, smelly Leeds had better not get their 15 points back...

I don't think I've ever seen a Celtic article without having some sort of comment such as "Strachan is rubbish" etc as the featured comment. At the moment they have put the wise comment from HandOfUglyBetty as the supplementary comment to do with an article discussing Gordon's unwillingness to discuss his future. The comment says: 'Stuff this O'Leary nonsense- it's got to be Keane.' I agree with HandOfUglyBetty in the sense that I don't want O'Leary as Celtic manager but the relation to the article is quite slim. I can only assume it was picked as it is negative. I'm getting disappointed at the willingness to presume Gordon is gone in the summer. He may well leave even if I hope not but I find the medias assumptions irritating and I believe they're making his job untenable with the constant presumption that he's a dead man.

smelltheglove - I am not sure about your cryptic reference but if you mean the story about Celtic not hearing about the Caldwell suspension till after the media, then why shouldn't he mention it?
Good on him. Why on earth would you want him to cow-tow when the SFA are showing such blatant disregard.
The SFA response seems spectacularly childish for such a high profile organisation -
"Because you can imagine, if it was our job to phone around all the clubs in Scotland, it would be a huge task."
So red cards after the 90 minutes are a dime a dozen in the Scottish league are they??
No wonder clubs end up playing players not realising they are suspended. {expletive} pathetic, petty, response!
I see the BBC have followed up with another Strachan bashing story "Wilson backs bodyswerving boss". Great prominence is given to a fans debate graphic about who the next managers should be with the O'Leary rumour mentioned.
Is there a big game coming up?
Go on Wee Gordon... GIRFUT!
-
Could not believe the nonsence on the STV news tonight about our manager. WGS says 'no comment' to questions clearly trying to create copy about his future in and this is a headline. Why are the shocking comments about bias made at the Hearts AGM not a bigger story than this or perhaps the Scottish Cup Semi Final. The media are clearly trying to upset WGS and therefore our team's pursuit of our first 3-in-a-row since Mr Stein's time.
GET IT UP THE LOT OF THEM
ONWARDS WITH GORDON STRACHAN!

What about this horrible, "die in your sleep, Nacho Novo", song? I hope to God that this offensive rubbish dies a natural death. To my mind it is too remeniscent of their Fenian blood song. I hope too that the press don't make a big thing of it.
-
tony bannanas
The manager should realise the press will magnify and distort every flipant remark and every facial expression to make a headline showing him up in the worst possible light.
If he didnt give them the ammunition, they would have to work a lot harder. He does make it easy for them.
On a day where a SPL chairmen accuse the scotish game of corruption, we have our manager as a lead story for pulling faces.
-
BhoySean - you are absolutely right. If you click on the link to their messageboard the poster leads with a series of criteria for the manager including of course 'Celtic-minded'.
Where do they dig these guys up? From the same place they get the Radio Snide callers?
Anyway, enough about our manager.... can this really be the same sacred cardigan from Glasgow we all know and don't like?
Walter Smith was rubbish
-
Smell the glove.
Our manager didn`t chose to be headlined. Surely you realise that they will rubbish us regardless. That being so, Gordon should behave exactly as he sees fit as Celtic`s manager. It`s a little bit like Novo trying to ingratiate himself with the Rangers fans...it won`t happen. Gordon Strachan will NOT be given fair coverage in our media so he should say what he wants. Likewise, the more those hun biased organs write Gordon off, the more we should support him.The Scotland`s Shame banner was class;one supporting Gordon could have a fantastic effect. It`s definitely A Gordon For Me!

I agree with your comments. There are however some Celtic fans who see it as banter, just as there are some Celtic fans who see no issue with the Sunday Herald. Indeed, I posted on another (non-football) site on the Sunday Herald issue and had this repsonse. Couldn't disagree more.
"What a load of drivel! Who could possibly be offended by this nonsense. I don't doubt that some idiots at Celtic Park might want Jesus to manage the team, however, most of the supporters are happy to have a manager who's competent whatever his provenence. As 'bead-rattler' myself, I have no objection to somebody suggesting this, were it true, the problem is, it isn't. I'm speaking for the majority here, not the lunatics who think transubstantiation is haulage firm."

My dear,dear,dear,dear friend... Tiny Tim
Have you ever seen Scott Cuthbert?
He is very..nay ...extremely... mature individual, for his age.
He is the reserve team Captain, and I also believe he has skippered the Scotland under 21's.
He is a man to contend with, and he can and does..take even LESS prisoners than Bobo!
He just needs one chance...and I am sure that he could/can handle anything that Aberdeen will thro' at us on Saturday.
Bobo, in my book has many qualities..he can tackle...he can soitenly WIN the Heading Duels...he is fast...he is athletic..... so what is not to like?
Well, I will tellya...
Bobo.. HAS THE UNHAPPY KNACK of MAKING a MENTAL, MENTAL MISTAKE...at the most unexpected times.
He is, for reasons known only to himself ,convinced that he can DRIBBLE!
Unfortunately, he has sadly demonstrated on numerous occasions... THAT HE IS INELUCTABLY... COMPLETELY BEREFT OF THAT TALENT!
The Road to Perdition..in a Soccer Game... Is PAVED with MENTAL MISTAKES!
That is my only complaint against any inclusion of Bobo, in a Celtic Defensive Set- up...for one can never be cured of the predilection to make those unthinking errors.
It is a congenital flaw, that is part and parcel of one's make-up.
Kojo.

Smelltheglove - you said it yourself... if he pulls a face he'll be on the front page. HE WILL BE ON THE FRONT PAGE NO MATTER WHAT HE DID. If he says no comment he will be on front page for 'bodyswerving', if he answers their questions and says he will be staying he will be on the front page 'insisting he is staying spun in some sort of way to suggest he is being dishonest.
We went through all this with MON. THE KNIVES ARE OUT FOR HIM.
GET IT RIGHT UP THEM GORDON.
Do you honestly think if it wasn't for WGS 'pulling faces' they would be going with positive stories or leading with a mickey mouse semi-final between the huns and St.J?

And the media have more than enough material from the Ned "McGeady was in my pocket" to get a few negative headlines. They will not be forthcoming.

Paul, any truth in the O'Leary rumours? I am about to renew my season ticket, but would be extremely alarmed if he was to be the next manager.

My point is simple, make the media work harder.
I watched the news tonight with a relative from England , no axe to grind, no allegiances, but he was amazed at how cheeky our manager was.
Dont tell me they deserve it etc etc,..they LOVE it.
Make them work for thier headline. You can almost here the rubbing of the hands from the press when they realise our manager is in one of those moods

smelltheglove,
I´m astonished with your assertion and couldn´t disagree with you more.
MON and WGS were, still are the darlings of the English media long long before they even landed in Scotland. Feted almost. Invited to every studio for every big game championship and award ceremony due to their natural razor sharp wit intelligence and well adjusted personalities. Broadsheet Column writers and sought after company.
They both come to Scotland and the laptop loyal boil them.
I think that is MON found himself going for 3 in a row up against the 9iAR Rangers manager, The man that resurrected Scotland, The man that won Rangers the qaudruple soon etc. that he´s be getting the treatment that WGS is now getting.
WGS if he does leave should be made to write the book on how to deal with the Scottish media
If only WGS was low enough to handle Chick young and all the other mediocre masons the way that Smith and Knox used to do.

Ed,
The SFA being Rangers protection racket should make no difference to that argument. ;-)

Just got an e-mail in from Celtic Park saying season tickets are frozen next season.
Tinytim.
Are you going to BBs tomorrow,I owe you a drink, hope you call in, at the inn.
Pastyface.
Your right,re the herald, they are working a fine line, they can't afford to have any trouble, from anywhere.
I also think the record can't afford to cross swords with the hun support, they've lost the Celtic support,Financially, they couldn't afford to lose the bigots as well.
-
the media have orchestrated a campaign (as they did with doctor jo, barnes, and to an extent MON) whereby every press conference every day in every paper question marks are put on the future of the celtic boss (whoever they are at the time) and this in turn leads to debate on radio phone ins and quickly the managers position becomes untenable.
spot the difference govan way. every man and his dog knew eck was a dead man walking, cue "im no quitter going nowhere" same applies to le goon, the same retort, "!never quit in my life will never walk away" and the now infamous "i dont sack managers".
Even more incredulous was the little genital who not only gave up the ghost but then with all the dignity jumpred ship early, but none were subjected to the same degree of scrutiny about the security of the job and whether they would be there at the end of the season.
Nobody to comfortable talking about new managers as current one still giving his all for us the now, taking a helluva beating in the press so least we can do is get behind him. And as for o'leary he ticks all the "celtic minded" boxes you want, have still to find a celtic fan if they exist who would touch him with a bargepole. KInda ruins the theory the media and some on here have about "celtic mindedness" being the main criteria for being accepted as celtic manager.

Well can I say a large thank you to the Scottish Media. Once again their snide undermining of a Celtic manager has helped me re-focus.
I have absolutely no consideration for their opinions or their concerted orchestrated assistance to anyone associated with Rangers Football Club.
Once more I am delighted to stand up for our manager who is infinitely more Celtic Minded that many of his detractors.
A Gordon for me today and tomorrow!
Again let me repeat.
Currently we have a championship to play for which though unlikely is not impossible to win but perhaps more importantly we had two matches against Rangers where it was essential that we put down a marker for next season. Both issues demanded that the Celtic team has a concerted, united, unreserved, unequivocal support behind it, a support worthy of those green and white jerseys, a support aware of the history and tradition of a group who do not lie down willingly and have their tummy tickled. Part one was achieved on Wednesday.
Tomorrow a bigger challenge faces the Celtic support. It is relatively easy to be up for it against your bitterest rivals. Can they be up for it against another club in a game equally as important and can they be up for it in what remains of the season?
I ask them to demonstrate unity in the face of adversity and suggest that the best possible way of beginning that process is by showing some respect for the Celtic manager, beseiged on all sides by many who do not have Celtic's interests at heart.

Any Celtic fan who has a go at anyone associated with Celtic two days after a game at Parkhead where thousands were enjoying publicly smearing the name of the man that practically built the club and took Scotland to two world cups. Celtic have German under-18 international Thomas Hitzlsperger on trial for two weeks. The youngster has been released by Bayern Munich and has been picked out by Tommy Burns as having potential. When you read the history....
18 April 1925 - Alex McNair, nicknamed "the Icicle", played his last game for Celtic.
He was at the club for 21 years and made 604 appearances winning 12 League titles and 6 Scottish Cups.
A true Celtic hero.
18 April 1936 - Jimmy McGrory scored a hat-trick against Ayr United and his third was his 50th league goal of the season, a club record.
The greatest Celt of them all!

"The manager should realise the press will magnify and distort every flipant remark and every facial expression to make a headline showing him up in the worst possible light."
Couldn't agree more - I've been saying for ages that he needs to go and get his face Botoxed to LA and back again so that it retains a mask like appearance totally devoid of human expression. You'd think he'd have figured ths out himself at Southhampton but sadly no. Why of why doesn't PL arrange this - it's as plain as the nose on the end of my face?
And speaking of noses, Gordon's could do with a bit of tweaking too whilst he's in getting the Botox, and his hair his hair - what's that all about exactly - ginger is a sitting target for the press - has he never heard of hair dye ffs...?

Need some help please ghuys. Looking for a copy of the following book: -
Celtic A complete record 1888-1992
Author: Paul Lunney
Hardback released 1992
ISBN: 1873626274
Checked Amazon and Ebay, however only 2 copies available at £130 and £250 respectively. Does anyone know anyone who would be willing to sell a copy any cheaper?
Also, is there a website that has info on the line-ups for the Celtic players who played in games between 1939 & 1945? My Granda played for Celtic at that time, however Celticfc.net doesn’t have these listed as official matches, nor info of the team selection immediately prior and following this period either.
Someone in my extended family has a copy of the book (which definitely has my Granda’s details in it – including his goal against Rangers), however I would like a copy for myself to pass on to my future weans (God willing!) ;-D
Thanks in advance for any help

Stoir - I was going to write the following in response to your last post to me :-
One of the things I love about this site, which I discovered immediately after Black Sunday, is the amount of Irish/Scottish/Celtic FC history that you can find on here. With my engineering background I'm not an avid reader and I also find that I'm better discussing things face-to-face rather than trying to debate various issues on a blog.
As various members of the BB Clique will testify, I tend to engage with fellow posters the way I would if I was sitting having a beer with them in the pub. In other words, I treat people the way I expect to be treated myself.
Like you, I don't have to justify my supporter credentials to anyone, so I resent your OTT reaction to my earlier query about our board and chairman. Trust me, your not the only one basking in the result the other night and it was never my intention to end the feelgood factor.
As supporters/season card holders/shareholders we are entitled to ask questions of our management and our board on here without being made to feel that we are undermining the cause. Unless, of course, you think that I'm a lurking laptop loyal.
I have complete faith in Peter Lawell. Right now John Reid is an unknown quantity to me and Gordon Strachan has my support, although I would be lying if I said that I didn't have my doubts.
Stoir - that was what I would have written to you if you hadn't annoyed me with your condescending post.
I can only assume that you are seeing a proctologist as you appear to be a long way up your own arse. Not a great predicament for a warrior such as yourself!
Yours in Celtic

OK this comes from John Barnes who was a failure, courtesy of "Head Bhoys" by Graham McColl, but should sound familiar to WGS -
"At press conferences I found that, being an inexperienced manager, every decision I took, in terms of the way I wanted the team to play, in terms of the team selection, everything was being questioned. We would win 4-0 and the first question would be, "Do you think you were a bit lucky because they could have had a goal?". Or "Do you think you were a bit lucky because they hit the post?". It was all negative even when we were doing OK. So I felt I had to become very defensive because if I wasn't I felt I would have been slaughtered. As it turned out, I was slaughtered anyway."
Barnes would've done well to swap "an inexperienced manager" for "the Celtic manager" in the first line there.
Compulsory reading for anyone considering the Celtic manager's job.

My first real chance to come on and say a big Hail Hail since Wednesday's fantastic night in Paradise.
Have to agree 100% with the other bloggers on here, O'Leary can not be seen as an option to replace WGS if he ever decides to leave us.
On that note, I don't even want to discuss replacing the wee man and think he is still doing a marvelous job, albeit with some mistakes. No one is perfect.
After the euphoria of Wednesday night, coupled with their misery, I've been walking on the clouds. Gordon can treat that lot with as much contempt as he wishes. It's our fellow Celtic fans who have got to throw a deaf ear to the media and get behind him and the team. That way, nothing they say or write can effect us with regards to the manager. We can discuss it among ourselves but please, keep away from the phone ins, at least to discuss such matters.

Gordon_J @ 19:13....
Your comment "the basic view they have is of the Protestant supremacy in Scotland" is absolutely accurate.
Indeed a recently published history of Rangers confirms their view of the world...
"There is no football club anywhere in the world like Rangers. It has a singular place in the Scottish ethos. It mirrors the life of Scotland in a way that is incomparable, surely not duplicated anywhere else in the world.
Its sustained success and achievement over more than 120 years has seen it become institutionalised flag carrier of what a majority of Scots would consider to be national virtues - Protestant, Monarchist tradition and Unionist in the literal sense of the the Union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Rangers are a football club and an organisation who are at the very heart of the Scottish establishment, their place in the very culture of the nation being as distinctive as that of the Church of Scotland, the Scottish legal system and The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrew's. Their position in society emerging from the historic process that embraced the Masonic Order and the end of the Stuart dynasty of kings all the way back, if you please, to the Reformation.
The "Blue Nose", the Rangers supporter, of club and concept, permeates Scottish life - the judiciary, the police, even the "state" church, the Church of Scotland."
That's what we are up against -keep the faith!

Hi Paul Hail Hail Once again it is good to be a Tim The performance justified an even more emphatic result.. I agreed with a poster last night when he said big Mick could have read the situation for the goal better imo this is the kernel of the defensive problem if the remaining back three had adjusted their position then the nauseous little orc would not have scored. For our winner that was the reward for Ugly Betty being sent off as I am sure he would have not let Skippy get to the cross. Naka :- no need to say more if Carlsberg did goals….
Thought this was Caldwell’s best game for us but he will still cost us.
This was our very best performance in any game against them in Gordon Strachan’s time. Mark Wilson made a slight mistake for their goal but as well as ignoring a decent shout for a free kick the ref also in a way caused that goal has he got in the way right a the clearance on the right side and that is why the ball ended out on the left. Wilson must stay. This team was motivated committed and showed bottle and pace and this is why it makes what has gone before so totally unacceptable. We still have in our team, players who can be two up against Inverness Caley and lose three goals :- It shouldn’t be forgotten. I’m not being negative I’m just not losing sight of the facts.
Kojo Felicitations and respect to you ‘ you have ever been a paladin for Gordon I was a fan when he was first appointed but I do now think he should move on even if we retain our title. I think he has too stubborn and dogmatic in terms of team selection and tactics. I do not expect to win every game or indeed every league championship but for too much of the wee man’s reign the product on display has been turgid and the tempo too too slow.. It may well be that if he does go then I may come to regret it The seeds he has planted may only flower after he leaves. If he stays I will hope only the best for him and all of us and that he has learned how to be more flexible in his approach and his motivational skills become unbeatable. Btw I was in complete agreement with him in his use of and timing of substitutions.
I notice the share price has stood rock solid throughout as you seem to be fiscally savant are we in for good times ahead . Finally so as to have you not thinking too badly of me I think I know your musical taste

The league extension won't happen. It's a non-starter on so many levels.
Firstly, Rangers were extended a favour by the SPL with the (unnecessary) postponement of the Gretna game. As a consequence of this favour, Rangers find themselves with fixture congestion. (Note that two other Rangers games were postponed prior to the rescheduled game with Gretna taking place. Either of those two games could therefore have been played in that midweek slot. One of those games has still to be scheduled.)
Providing Rangers with another favour to solve the problem created by the first favour would leave the SPL's impartiality and credibility in tatters.
Secondly, an extension to the league would directly disadvantage Celtic. Delaying the final game of the season would create an inappropriate gap between games 37 and 38 for Celtic, somewhere in the region of 11 or 12 days without a game.
Providing two favours to Rangers would be bad enough, but compounding this with the creation of a disadvantage to Celtic would be gross negligence from the body responsible for ensuring a fair and level playing field for all member clubs.
Thirdly, analysis of the fixtures earlier in the season demonstrates the ridiculous nature of Rangers' request to postpone the Gretna game, making the SPL decision to grant the postponement perplexing at best and suspicious at worst.
The Rangers fixture list at the time of the postponement was hardly challenging.
RANGERS
Sat 1st Dec - Kilmarnock at Ibollox
Wed 5th Dec - free
Sun 9th Dec - Gretna away postponed
Wed 12th Dec - Lyon at Ibollox
Contrast this with Celtic's fixture list leading into the Barca CL match:-
CELTIC
Sun 24th Feb - St Mirren away
Wed 27th Feb - Inverness home
Sat 1st March - Hibs at Easter Rd
Tue 4th March - Barca at the Nou Camp
Celtic had travelling to Catalonia to add between the trip to Easter Rd on Saturday and the Barca game on Tuesday. Rangers had no travelling, but still felt the need for postponement against Gretna.
An astonishing decision by the SPL and one which fails to stand up to any scrutiny whatsoever, especially as Aberdeen's request one week later with a similar schedule was declined.
Extending the league to accomodate Rangers would fail even the most basic test of impartiality and even handedness.
Walter Smith's interview clearly designed as a plea for another favour show's the arrogance of the man and the club.
There is only one answer - get on with it.
-

I went on at length..not so long ago..concerning the propensity of the Celtic Management..no matter who is in charge,to be rather chintzy in allowing a newly Promoterd, Reserve Face, to appear, with any regularity ,in the Celtic Foist team Photies...
The Last couple of reserve players to be promoted, as of last reading, was Young Master McGeady and Big Mick.
O'Dea,who is streets ahead of Big Mick in talent and Tackling, is the TOKEN RESERVE PLAYER, who is held up as an example, in demonstration of the excellent opportunities that are available for Foist Team advancement, open, to any young Celtic Tyro, who wants a permanent career at CelticFC.
That last sentence,is being written, by this writer, with a laconic and supercillous eyebrow, cocked.
There is a time in the tides of man...when one must either fish or cut bait.
Are you listening, Gordon?
In making my case for the well over due Promotion, of young Mr.Cuthbert, to the Foist Eleven,I contend that that time has arrived.
No matter......
My eagerly awaited progo...for the final resolution in Tomorrow's contest is,as follows.
A Boisterous,Overwhelming Win for the Bhoys by the score of...
Celtic 54 Aberdeen 0
So far, I am batting 1000...
Whadya mean I hivnae...
Well, mebbe my scorign progo's hiv been a wee bit off the mark...
But, whadya waaaaaaaaant?
WE WON.... DIDN'T WE?
Have I forgotten anything...
Oh! Yeah!
Just a reminder, in case anyone has forgotten..
" It has been the Fault of the Players....
Not... the Shrewd and Clever Gordon...is has bin the lackadaisical performances that the Players have bin turning in,previous to Wed....that is the reason that we are now scrambling, for a life line, in order to win our Thoid Championship!...
Vive OOr, Gordo!"
S'Aweright?
S'Atsaright!
Kojo.
yer pal... forever and ever.

Example of hun bigotry number 14239
WARNING: Those sensitive to bigoted hun bile should not follow this link -
WE HATE NOEL HUNT
So they hate Noel Hunt eh. Wonder why that could possibly be?
Is it not a bit of a coincidence that it's only Celtic who seem to have "annoying, niggly" players that fans of other teams hate with gusto also Boruc, McGeady etc. [young Noel being the exception]. No sectarianism involved of course because the fine folk of Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Paisley etc. love joining in, no it's just that these guys are so aggressive and annoying. Obviously Rangers have no players that are aggressive, niggly or annoying do they?
And what's this garbage about us not singing Strachan's name? Please explain to me at what point it became standard practice for fans to chant the manager's name because I must've missed it. If this was the case why are the hun not offering up hymns for the cardigan every week given the job he's done for them this year? [I see enough of them on the TV to know this doesn't happen] Yes there was the famous MON chant but the circumstances around MON's tenure were truly exceptional he turned that team from mediocrity to beating Rankers 6-2 in a matter of months. But of course the media would rather peddle the myth that not chanting the manager's name is some sort of sinister bigoted insult

its a strange one as football chants (predominately) appear to be outside the law to a certain extend at least.
Agree its distasteful, but is it within the law given the disabilty act etc, is the new law not religion, race, disabilty, sexual preference etc (don't know just thinking out loud.Siupose differnt time.
I'm sure at some point a chant will go up which other find as distastful as we find Naka's its what its all about (within reason)at football, sometime people can be too easily offended - i'd be interested n what Naka thought - as its his view point which matters in all this.
Thanks for the honest response.

Can I point out that these are extremely unimportant matters. We have a big game to win tomorrow. Negative stuff just now is a big distraction. We need to keep our eye on the ball. 5 wins and let's see what will be.
There will be a long cold summer for recriminations and negativity if we fail. Please don't contribute or highlight such draining debates when we're in the middle of the battle.
WE have a league to win to revenge the 2003 title.

Stoir Mha Chroi and his comments about the sad people and their racist chanting.
I myself sent the very same complaint to both SFA/SPL and asked that should they be open to players such as Naka generating cash, interest into our game then they should surely be protected by what Stoir Mha Chroi had linked from the you tube.
The Naka song and also the famine song are just two of the very many sick songs this sad tripe of people sing and carry with them over the country.
Likewise with the " article " in the SH I ask for all Celtic fans to bite back as it's a far too common occurance for Celtic / Irish / Catholics to be treated unfairly and most of of in such a disgusting manner.
Email address I have for SFA is : Derek.Kirkwood@scottishfa.co.uk
Maybe relation to Billy haha

Thanks guys. I do not have the exact seasons that my granda played to hand, hence the fact I want the book. Easy enough to get this from the family copy but it would be better to have one for myself!
His name was Charles McGinley. Played up front and most importantly scored against Rangers. Vhery Pwoud!! Appearances were restricted by injury but I'm sure he was there for at least 2 or 3 seasons.
Other clubs were Kilmarnock and Arbroath if memory serves me correctly, including a Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden - not for Celtic. (It is appauling that I don't know this down to the exact detail...)
Think the reason that the book is so valuable is that it has the WW2 games info and also it might have been on limited edition when released in 1992. Ideally would prefer not to pay over £100, however I need a copy for pride of place in the house.
Thanks again for all your help.

in december when our fixtures were very congested we played the postponed game (for scotland) at the first available midweek thereafter (which i thought was a rule).
For some reason Rangers who had a free midweek did not play. I found this strange at the time. Considering December and into January is a period which may yet potentially cause us to lose league (key players injured silly mistakes costing goals - fatigue a factor?) then tough on Rangers now for the congestion. They have had available midweeks to play these games and have chosen not to. If it comes back to bite them now, all the better.
Notice youve dipped in an out recently ed (tonight to rightfully defend your team as it was a scotland game not a rangers game with swastika) but how do you feel about that summation of the perceived congestion.
The deck was loaded and the dealer thought he was taking advantage, just need to play with the cards dealt now!!

Keep pushing it for Scott Cuthbert.
I believe he was captain when the Scotland U-19s were runners up to Spain and again at the U-20 Championship in Canada.
Doesn't take as many prisoners as Bobo? I don't believe Scott knows what a prisoner is, or cares. Just don't get in his way.
He reminds me more of John Cushley than Billy, but that is purely a personal opinion. No idea what he is like as a person, but I wouldn't like to challenge him on a football field.
Compared to the other night, think Barry Robson with a lot more muscle and much less "sensitive".
Plus - if you believe in the benefit of players used to working in tandem - he has probably more experience as a partnership with Darren O than any other pairing at CP.
Cheers
Alex

He later also played for Belfast Celtic - if anyone has any info on them around that time then that would be welcome also.

Kojo, Gordon has played his (in his opinion) strongest team all season. On Wednesday he played the team that many of us have been asking for since January. Was it just coincidence that he got the result that he had failed to get in the past ? I don't think so !
The players are there. His intransigence on team selections have been his biggest failing.

Got the game...
September 8th 1945, League game at Ibrox.
Unfortunately, we lost 3-5, however your grandfather did score and Jimmy Delaney got the other 2.
However, in the book, "An alphabet of the Celts" there is an entry for "Charles McGinlay (born Kilbarchan on 6 January 1926). He made 11 appearances and scored 1 goal.
He made his debut v Queeens Park at Celtic Park in a Charity Cup match in a 3-0 victory.
It gets better because there is actually a photograph of Charles wearing the hoops.

From this week, several things are clear (well obviously not "clear" but have at least led me to believe):
1. This Celtic side with this Celtic manager are superior to the Huns under Smith/McCoist.
2. The Huns are prepared to stoop to anything to win and the media's general characterisation of the hand ball as "a fantastic save" proves that they want the Huns to win. (If a Celtic player had done that we would never have heard then end of their "cheating." But when a Hun does it, it's all ho, ho, a great "save".)
3. The non-reporting of the potato-hurling (again) proves the point that the media think they have to show "balance" in terms of "bad press" as opposed to objective reporting.
4. The media's treatment of "Gordon" (let us call him "Gordon" as they call Smith "Walter") today indcates a certain rattling of confidence in the "stop 3 in a row" campaign.
5. Mrs Lanarkcelt saw Jim Craig in Marks and Sparks in Perth today(following Mrs Craig "as men do in Marks and Sparks" says Mrs LC). It made her day, anyway! ("He is very distinguished looking. He had "a fine overcoat on," she says.)
Ooops! Mrs Lanark Celt back from Perth. Better go!

Pablo
I don't think it is as simple as that. The midfield was different for the last game against Rangers which we lost but I didn't see a huge difference in performance between both games. We probably created more chances in first game. We won at the weekend because Nakamura was on top form and he played in both matches. If Gordon was to go by what the Celtic fans were asking for then Nakamura wouldn't have been playing at all. I also think that Robson is only now getting used to playing in the centre because when he played there a few weeks ago he looked completely out of place and was pretty useless.
I don't think football is as black and white as fans tend to think it is. We see posters regularly on here putting forward all sorts of line ups and formations. They all claim that their formation/line up would be excellent but in reality when it does get a chance it rarely is as successful as the posters believed it would be.
In saying all this, the team looked good at the weekend so I wouldn't want to change things much with maybe Samaras starting the odd games.

WG and others...hopefully not stealing anyone's thunder.
Charles McGinlay appears to have made his first appearence in the Hoops on May 1 1942 in a Glasgow Charity Cup match against Queens Park, Celtic won 3-0. He made atotal of 7 appearences that season, scoring four goals, one in the Summer Cup away to Motherwell and three in the Glasgow Charity Cup including 2 in the Final against Third Lanark on 22 May 1942, which Celtic won 3-0.
Seaon 43-44 he made a total of 7 appearences, scoring 2 goals, one against Morton in a 2-1 league victory, and one against Partick Thistle in a 3-1 Glasgow Cup defeat.
Season 44-45 he played a total of 2 games, no goals. This was obviously the season ravaged injury you referred to.
Season 45-46 again saw him feature on only three occasions, scoring one goal in a 5-3 defeat away to Rangers on 8 September 1945.
According to the book, that appears to have been his last season at the club, his last appearance being on 29 September 1945 in a 2-0 home victory over Queen Of the South.
Hope this helps.

Think what ye are claimin' ...pal...
Think!
What you have just claimed in your last submission is tantamount to this.....
Celtic Fc are in no need of hiring a Manager.... EVER, again!
It has just bin announced that Celtic's wonderful win, on Wed...had been brought about by the resident Celtic Manager....by very luckily managing to stumble on the Perfect Team Selection...
He is a year late and a penny short,however....as
This EXACT SAMW, Winning Celtic Team Selection, that he inadvertantly used, had been PROPOSED...for Months....and Months... by The Celtic Fans....who from now on...shall be solely responsible for TEAM SELECTION... BY COMMITTEE!
We no longer need or want a Manager, interfering with the Fans wishes...
After all... didn't that win on Wed...prove beyond a Shadow of a Doubt....
That not only does Father know Best...
Is seems that the Celtic Fans Do ...as well?...
No more Managers need apply at Parkhead.....
When Mr. Strachan is Banished....
Managers?
Who needs them!

To win the League 7/2 after 9/2 at the start of the week.
Is there any other tournament that is so open to fixture uncertainty that you can bet on?
Also good luck to Lanarkshires only Football team tomorrow. Just up the road from The Greatest Football Manager Ever's house and the producers of the greatest square sausages.
Its seems so long ago that the big discussion on here on a Friday night was 'Where do you get the best Square Sausage'

Bhoy Sean, agreed football and tactics / team selections are not Black and White, but how much were that team op for it on Wednesday ? Hands-Up time, I thought Naka's inclusion was a mistake, shows what I know !. But.............. I still wanted players who could stand up to their physical side and on Wednesday we got it in BR & PH. Looked a different team from where I was sitting compared to previous outings.

Thedj_1… I have heard not a solitary mention of the man’s name outside the ‘popular’ media.
Narrowbhoat, Kilbeggan Blade it is.
Greenwells Glory, aye, it could easily have been a more comfortable victory, but I’ll settle for the same next week.
Bieniex, that’s two of us then.
Estadio National, that’ll be three of us then, only 60.008 to go.

Charles McGinlay's entry is on page 276 of "An alphabet of the Celts."
You can buy a copy on Abebooks 11.88 plus 3.35 postage.
According to the entry Charles played for Clydebank Boys Guild, Celtic,East Fife (on loan), Arbroath, St Johnstone, East Stirling, Ayr United Belfast Celtic and Sligo Rovers.
There is a very good book titled Paradise Lost and Found - The Story of Belfast Celtic," by Padraig Coyle (Mainstream) ISBN 1 84018 136 2.

I take it your money is on Kilbeggan Blade for the Scottish National !!
Cant understand why it is just the coin incident that the media highlighted. they must have missed the stuff pelted at Barry ( man of the match) Robson when he took first half corners. And some of the stuff they were singing was vile.
But we really need to get the coin throwers to F@!". We are better than that.
Like Bull67 (and Kevin Keegan)I would love it if we beat them LOVE IT !!

AAFG, You're bang on about Scott Cuthbert and Darren O'Dea being an excellent pairing. Think Billy McNeill and Jim Brogan. {:-0
Bhoy Sean, Completely agree with your call for caution as regards the assertion of tactical exactitude. Had the referee blown his whistle after two minutes of injury time, the conversations would have been completely different. And, yes, someone would have found a way to blame Caldwell!

WG - will do. Thanks. I don't follow 'Lunney's Index', can you explain please?
Gordon - Yip, that's the game in question. Tend to gloss over the result when telling everyone about him!! Don't know if the Charles McGinlay relates to my granda or not. He was called Charlie by his mates and has an 'EY' spelling as opposed to 'AY'. Looks like another book I'll have to get though!!
Wizard of Oz - fantastic. From memory of the 1888-1992 book this sounds like the great man!!

Hail, hail
A wee history lesson about Scottish media.
Does anybody remember a short-lived newspaper about 20 years ago called the Sunday Scot?
Probably not, as it only lasted for about 6-8 weeks.
Owned by one David Murray, it employed a lot of journalists at the start of their careers.
Some have moved out of newspapers, but others have risen up the ranks.
And Murray never forgets a friends phone number and doesn't hesitate to use them, or his influence, when he needs to.
STANDING UP...three goals and three points tomorrow for the Celtic
