TITLE: When the good guys play the work-shies AUTHOR: Paul67 DATE: 4/25/2008 12:23:00 PM ----- BODY: On Sunday Rangers play only their third away game in the league since February (when they last collected all three points on the road) in what is correctly being described as a league decider. Their away form in the league leaves little doubt as to why they are so reluctant to do a honest day’s work in the time allocated. The good guys have an opportunity to open up a five point gap at the top of the table. The work-shies have games in hand, but nothing in football is more important than points in the bag. Rangers have eight confirmed games remaining this season, six of which are away from home and all of which will be played under enormous pressure if Celtic win on Sunday. I have several concerns about Sunday many of which will melt away if I see Barry Robson and Paul Hartley playing central midfield. These two won the physical battle 9 days ago and have the experience to cope with this kind of fixture. The good guys are about to write a page in our history, they will never know a greater honour.

In the year of Rangers resuscitation 2008 we have been witness to a litany of subterfuge

Ah ah
Something ain't right

It is therefore imperative that Celtic Park on Sunday morning reeks of CL atmosphere. Everybody either get in bed early on Saturday night or do not go home on Saturday night.

I'm gonna get myself
I'm gonna get myself
I'm gonna get myself connected

They might well manage a very sneaky draw so its important that we celebrate Celtic and being Celtic fans.

I ain't gonna go blind
For the light which is reflected
I see thru you
I see thru you
I see thru you
I see thru you
Ya dirty tricks
Ya make me sick
I see thru you
I see thru you

Its an absolute must that we scare the living daylights out of them at a time in the day and week when CP is not normally associated with CL atmosphere. Smell the glove and New excuses. Celebrate not being them I beg you. Remember last Wednesday and how they clung on. Penalties, red cards, lashing out etc. We need a confident repeat.

I'm gonna do it again
I'm gonna do it again
Ah ah
I'm gonna do it again
Gotta do right
'Cause something ain't right
Gotta do right
Come on
If you make sure you're connected
The writing's on the wall
But if your mind's neglected
Stumble you might fall
Stumble you might fall
Stumble you might fall

So as Franny from Travis would say sing sing sing.

The game on Sunday will also play a big part in their UC return leg performance on Thursday. Deflated I hope is how they will be described.

Ah ah
Ain't gonna go blind
I see thru you
I see thru you
I'm gonna get myself
I'm gonna get myself
I'm gonna get myself connected
I ain't gonna go blind
For the light that is reflected
Hear me out
Can ya hear me out
Can ya hear me out
Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
Do it again
I wanna do it again
I wanna do it again
I wanna do it again
Ya terrified
Ain't gonna go blind
Ain't gonna go blind
Here we go

Who knows how it will go but if they lose the next two games then ... maybe it will be three :-)

If you make sure you're connected
The writing's on the wall
But if your mind's neglected
Stumble you might fall
Stumble you might fall

Wouldn´t it be great if it was left to Ally Mc Coist to do the post match interview at Hampden after we had been crowned 3inarow Champions.

Back in 2003 we were forced to play the huns less than 72 hours after the UEFA semi with Boavista. This because we were told by Gold and Blair that this game was not to be a title decider AT ALL COSTS, with much being made of police opinions. This also presented a convenient opportunity to rake up some good Dallasgate Celtic hooligan copy.

I will leave aside the question of what would happen should a Celtic-Rankers cup final arise [in fact it did the previous month!] and the farcical situation, where you have the only entertainment business on the planet actively trying to make its product less exciting.

I note that when the dates for the two Celtic-Rankers games at Parkhead were finalyl announced, the SPL made a statement to the effect that they were not concerned about either of these matches being a title decider.

This example of bias was actually even more transparent and demonstrably prejudiced than we are currently witnessing with Extensiongate [which is still pretty transparent nonetheless].

Consider the SPL criteria in season 2002/3 to decide the champions in the event of two teams having the same points tally -

1. Goal Difference
2. Higher number of goals scored
3. A play-off at a neutral venue

Now let's consider FIFA and UEFA's criteria for the same scenario in the Champions Leage and World Cup qualifiers at that time -

1.Goal difference
2. Higher number of goals scored
3. Head to head record of the teams concerned
4. Play off at a neutral venue.

Spot the difference?

It is enlightening to consider the head to head record between Celtic and Rankers in season 2002/3

Celtic P4 W2 D1 L1 F8 A7 PTS 7
Huns P4 W1 D1 L2 F7 A7 PTS 5

FIFA and UEFA's criteria clearly weren't good enough for our pub league.

A more blatant example of favouritism you couldn't find yet this was not mentioned at all in the media.

The same media who are using us bringing a fixture forward [i.e. opposite of putting fixtures back thereby extending the season, for the benefit of Leckie & co.!] as a "precedent" to justify the present shenanigans.

A legal team could tear this mob to shreds if we could ever get it to a courtroom. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger pfayr COMMENT-DATE:25/04/08 14:13 COMMENT-BODY:pastyface

As recently as last year Real Madrid won La Liga due to their superior head to head in the classico despite having scored less goals and having an inferior goal difference.

1) points
2) goal difference
3) alphabetic order of club name ;-)

Poland, Holland & Greece insist on having some of their key players available for their warm-up friendlies.

We refuse to play Dundee Utd outwith the official season.

Hissy fits all round, Celtic serve notice of intention to quit the league, begin lobbying EPL for access, and considering a plan for Atlantic leagues.

Worst comes to worst, we could joing a lower league in England and work our way up. I know this isn't a trivial undertaking, but do you think that the Celtic Support could propel the club up through the various divisions, or would they stop going until we made the EPL? for evidence of this set play check out big Jan's winner against them last time out, what's so great about that goal is how defenders must track and move with the flight of the ball, their eyes will be averted momentarily from our strikers as they begin moving towards the wing to close down the space, before they can fix their position it's then headed behind them into the gap they have just vacated where there is a good chance a Celtic player will be smashing the baw intae the net.
PS, Hemdani like Weir has a huge blind spot so stick close to them cause I think forced errors will also get us goals.

Paul thank's for this place it's amazing, to remember how we coped when all we had was the fourth estate for Celtic information.

"This year's affair, held in Glasgow on Sunday, featured the veteran Northern Irish comic, Frank Carson, whose faux pas apropos Neil Lennon - 'I know he's here - I can smell the Semtex' - was greeted with a tumbleweed silence.

"Fortunately for Carson, there were enough guests over the age of 40 to raise a scattered cackle at his most up-to-date joke, about the beggar with a sign which reads 'Falklands War Veteran', who responds to a donation with the words, 'Muchas gracias, Senor.'

"The word in the hall was that Carson's music hall routine - including a selection of Paddy jokes - earned him a tasty £12,000."

I will post it in smaller sections as blogger did not liek it first time.

30/11/07 22:05, TontineTim said…

Gordon Strachan spoke frankly about the championship win last season, "I would have loved to have seen far better football." He also complained about "someone in the media" for highlighting an unflattering defensive record away from home.

Listened tae Snyde recently with Ned Flanders rabbiting on about how due to our abysmal away defensive record we would have to score at least two goals to ensure victory, when was it ever different; however a comment that Graeme Spiers made got me thinking, he said that too much emphasis was being put on our away record as most of the games involved happened last season and yet we still ran away with the League.

Celtic from its inception have always been an entertaining side, as we all know we won our first game 5-2 against a lowly Kinning Park side and only seven years later we recorded our highest victory to date 11-0 against Dundee following that up a year later 9-2 against our local rivals fae Barrowfield.

In fact our first captain was regarded even back then as an attacking centre half and actually played at centre forward for the national side.

Some of our legendary performances have involved free flowing attacking football:

• On April 15, 1916, we were forced to play two games on the last day of the season, which we did winning the first 6-0 at Parkheid against Raith with a 3:15 k.o. going straight tae the former Dalzell Estate for a tea time kick off, ironically the home team would prove to be as much our adversary in future years as the evil ones, which we also won 3-1, setting a new record for most goals in a season.

• The Patsy Gallacher Final, which we reached after a memorable 5-0 victory over the Govan side at Hampden, where the wee Donegal genius, in his last cup final and Jimmy McGrory's first incidentally, with seven minutes left and the Beano publisher's side leading 1-0 took a pass from Peter Wilson and waltzed past man after man before the big jam eating full back pulled him down in the box, before the cry "penalty" had left the Tims lips Patsy somersaulted with the ball gripped tight between his feet and landed in the back of the net.

As we would see more than 60 years later in the Centenary Final in which his grandson starred by the way, urged on by the Peerless Patsy the Bhoys didn't settle for a replay and in the closing minutes James Edward heidered the winner.

• Another of our great escapes involved a Cup Final against one of the finest Steelmen sides in their history, a side that would win the Championship the following season and contained the legendary Wullie MacFadyen whose his 52 league goals for the championship winning side remains the record goals total for a single season in Scottish League history, he also topped the scoring charts again the following season, netting 45 times.

We were behind 2-0 with eight minutes to go, the homing pigeons were already ML1 bound, singing da doo ron ron, with attached messages telling the locals the cup would be arriving shortly when James Edward pulled one back, it looked like too little too late and with just seconds to go a hopeful cross was floated into the 'well box, the keeper had it covered until the alleged cry "ma baw" went up, as he let it go the unfortunate centre half Craig nodded it intae his own net.

In the replay we won 4-2, two classic games with ten goals scored.

• In the historic game at Dens Park where apparently if we did not win we would be relegated, instead of backs to the wall and hoping for a breakaway tactics which was alien to us we won coming back from 1-2 to a cultured marmalade side to clinch victory in the dying seconds 3-2, although Jock Weir was the hero with a hat-trick the saviours that day were Bobby Evans, who throughout his career at Celtic Park personified the "play tae the final minute and even more", and big John McPhail who incidentally had two early goals chalked off, for their all out attacking play.

• In the early 50's Clyde had to win to avoid relegation, the Celts were booed from the park by the home support after we won 1-0, WE were the home side as the game was played at Parkheid

• Several years later in the final match of the season, a game which meant nothing to us, the visiting and at that time current League holders needed a win and a home loss for the huns against the sheep, at half time the jambos were one up while the huns were still tied 0-0, 45 minutes later and TFOD are champs even though they lost 0-1 as we came back and defeated the Calvinists thanks tae goals fae a young Bertie Auld and Eric Smith.

• Even in defeat we still played the only way we knew how, the Celtic way, the greatest manager this country has known knew that which is why his Pars side absorbed wave after wave of Celtic attack in the Cup Final and replay and then hit us on the break, twice.

The Celtic side that night had contained five internationals, with five of the other six being capped later on and four players, who were future European Cup winners.

• The following season we were cheered from the park with a lap of honour after losing 1-3 to a Real Madrid side that contained di Stefano, Puskas, Santmaria and Gento, we even had a disputed goal knocked off which would have made it 2-3 and the way we had played who knows what would have happened, for that night it was all about the performance, as Bartholomew Dick sung:

"We don't care if we win lose or draw,
Darn the hair do we care,
For we only know that there's going to be a show,
And the Glasgow Celtic will be there".

Unfortunately we did care and although we continued playing some fabulous fitba we invariably flattered to deceive, how can you explain going tae Love Street on a Monday night and gubbin them 5-0 yet five days later slumping 1-3 tae the same side at the D-Day Dodgers Social Club:

The morning of that game the media were salivating at the prospect of a final between us and the Ancell Babes. A side similar to us with some terrific players including internationals Charlie Aitken, Bert McCann, Pat Quinn and the Saint, yet just like us still underachievers. As it was they lost also that day to the Buddies Paisley Road neighbors, ironically on the same day as the final we gubbed them 4-0 at Fir Park.

All this fine play however was winning us nothing and reached its culmination on April 29, 1964, our final game of that season, when we went to Budapest in the semis of a ECWC with a 3-0 lead from the first leg, and lost 0-4.

The response from the Celtic boardroom amidst much warranted criticism for failing to defend a three goal lead in a major European Semi was that Celtic did not know the meaning of defensive football; it was not "the Glasgow Celtic way".

Despondent though we were little did we know what lay ahead exactly 364 days later when in the final minute against the Pars, who had been in the Championship race that season along with the embra and ayrshire brithers but slipped up near the end while chasing the double so the Cup was their last chance of a trophy, visibly wilting after being ahead twice, Big Billy, at that time uncharacteristically up for a corner, rose tae a Charlie Gallacher cross and grown men shed tears of joy, and yet true tae form we lost 1-5 tae the same mob four days later.

Now let's be quite clear about this, our misty eyed memories indicate that when the Big Mhan returned it was all magical, far from it, we were still an inconsistent side.

Although we won his first game back the very next day 6-0 at Broomfield we struggled after that and lost five and tied one of our following eight games.

Yes we won the Scottish but it was oul Jimmy who had got us to the semis, a game in which we were fortunate to tie 2-2 with our old adversary from Steelopolis coming back fae two Joe McBride goals with wee Ten Thirty tying it up with a penalty.

In the replay on an unseasonable sunny end of March night we trounced them 3-0 with a John Hughes inspired victory, so here we were in the Final and happy just tae be there and League losses like 2-6 at Brockville as bad as they were didnae faze us too much at that time.

I often wonder where we would have been had we lost that Final as two days after the League loss tae the Pars we faced the huns in the Glasgow Cup at Celtic Park winning 2-1 and eleven days later the GC joined the Scottish in the Parkhead boardroom, we were trophy winners at last and not from corners or the toss of a coin.

That summer as I recall we were bursting with pride waiting for August to roll round and even though we had lost 76 goals while scoring 133 in all competitions that previous season, Jock signed only one player, no not a defender but journeyman centre forward, Joe McBride. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger greenlion2 COMMENT-DATE:25/04/08 19:37 COMMENT-BODY:Season 1965/66 started off badly and we lost two of our first three League Cup games but managed tae bounce back tae win our section, we even lost the first hun game, however it should be noted that Jock left out Joe for this match readily admitting his mistake later.

The catalyst for me that led tae the Big Cup and our own NIAR was not the Scottish Cup win that April but a victory on October 23rd when we got the monkey off our back and beat the darnel in a major Cup Final.

After that we were now singing:

"We don't care what the animals say,
What the hell do we care,
For we only know that there's gonnae be a show,
And the Glasgow Celtic will be there".

That side had three changes from the April side but one of the most notable was the Faither in goal.

As Jock built his historical record breaking side out also from the "Celtic Celtic that's the team for me" team went veterans Jim Kennedy, Johnny Divers who contributed to our great achievement of being first with NIAR by scoring the initial goal of that period away against the Arabs after our dismal League Cup start, Ian Young, and John Hughes.

He also bought one more player, Wispy another forward, this was at a time when Joe was still fit, meanwhile we still had three potential all time top goal scorers on our books.

Defensive repairs were made internally, with Caesar adding an edge to his play and wee Luggie progressing from an ordinary wing half tae the fulcrum of the defence, we had evolved from a Scottish team to a European one and were now playing 4-2-4, which with our personnel and attacking style had the ability to switch to 3-3-4 and as was demonstrated in Lisbon 2-4-4.

• And the never say die trait continued with memorable games like the League Cup semi against the Hibbees at the coven where a Bobby Lennox goal in injury time would earn us a replay which we won 4-0.

• The final home game of the season against Morton who had tied 3-3 with the huns on the Wednesday night to give us the chance of retaining our title. We're now in injury time and it's 1-1 when down the main stand side wing went big Tam and over intae the crowded box comes the ball tae be bundled home by the Buzz Bomb, cue bedlam at Parkheid and despair down in Knights Templar country as they exit Rugby Park cheering at the early news the Tims had dropped a point.

• The Hibs and Dunfermline games where we clawed back goals tae win in injury time, with Joe contributing six of them.

• Big Billy again replicating his Pars goal with a last minute winner against the best team IMHO we had met in Europe up till then Vojvodina.

• Hibernian again at Hampden 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3 – "Dixie Deans Superstar, how many goals have you scored so far".

• Even after we suffered our biggest Cup Final defeat in my lifetime against the Maryhill Magyars, a game we could have actually won in the second half but for the immaturity of our young forwards Skip tae ma Lou and the King in front of goal, Jock's response was to sign Dixie Deans who was actually in the middle of a long suspension for indiscipline, four weeks later in his debut we went tae Firhill and thumped them 5-1.

The Celtic way continued on even after the Big Mhan left:

• Thrilling European victories against Real, Sporting and Ajax away.
• The Davie Provan Cup Final.
• Love Street on the Albert Kidd day.
• And especially during the Centennial season where we doddy said "most teams are in the bath while Celtic are still playing", that coming fae a rabid hun tae says it all.

The common factor in all of the above is that we Celtic played as we always have, even with mediocre players, to win.

While the huns were renowned for their dour aye ready cromwell style, we as Big Billy once said were the Cavaliers.

They have the likes of speedie, meiklejohn, cox, woodburn, symon, young, baird shearer, greig etc as their past heroes.

We have "Sniper" Joe Cassidy, Tommy McInally, Patsy Gallacher, Johnny Crum, Charles Patrick, Bobby Collins, Bertie Auld, Jinky, Big Tam, Dixie, Charlie Nick, Macca, Henke, Lubo, the big Hunskelper and Thommo and who could forget the Three Amigos, talented but also gallus. I could have added another talented and gallus striker but he sold his soul tae don the black mass vestments.

Some may question Henke but he had it in spades, cunning, deadly and tough as nails just ask betty konterman, colin hendry and gus mcpherson.

We have had an abundance of great strikers and players that I've missed out such as the Mighty Quinn, Jimmy Delaney, John and Billy McPhail, the Buzz Bomb, Stevie Chalmers and the original Bear as well as "James McGrory and Paul McStay, Murdoch……. and Hay", Brian McClair, Frank McGarvey and George McCluskey, however I'm concentrating not just on talent but that great Celtic trait, cheek.

In all my travels I've never came across a cheekier culture than the Scottish and Irish, and that's what makes us different from the dour Aye Readys, well it did until MON came on the scene.

Now this is not a MON bashing session and I do recognise that we played some exciting stuff during his reign battling tae victory with late goals fae the Road Runner, Big Dolph, Joos, the Hunskelper and Thommo and not forgetting the King of Kings, but then again so did the huns during the 60's and 90's.

I'm also forever grateful to him for giving us back our self-respect, I was going tae say dignity but that would involve wearing brown brogues and sitting in the best seats in the pictures, but and this is a big but, there was a cost.

Watching the Brady and Burns sides was like a throw back tae oul Jimmy's teams, lots of talent but nae guidance, especially when Jock left for the Pars. So when WTT gave us our pride back and the oul Doctor had us playing with a style and verve not seen by a Celtic side in years with a bit of grit at the back fae Stubbsie and Dolph it looked as if we would retain our title as we were scoring for fun, six 5 goal games, one 6 and a memorable 7-1 away tae Harri Kampman's side, that is until the yellow cards and injuries took their toll.

The poor Doctor also suffered humiliation from the meeja and didn't return for the next season and so we were left with the Bardal fiasco. March 26, 2000 a day to forget, humphed 0-4 going on 10 at the midden.

That summer as I was coming out of Mass, I had just returned fae a trip to Varadero, I bumped intae a Tim I knew. "What have you heard about a Manager" he asked, "well according tae the CNN Spanish it looks like Guus Hiddink", "hmm, my contact is saying Martin O'Neill" he replied.

I must admit that I wasn't truly enthralled especially after he was seemingly going tae bring Matt Elliot with him, Leicester O'Celtic I thought.

He then went out and signed a Chelsea reject who was in trouble for allegedly spitting on a customer in a restaurant, Oh God I thought we've just signed our own version of the Geordie nutter, further signings such as a Bolton reject with a disciplinary problem and who had just been red carded in an Inter-Toto gemme didnae really fill me with optimism.

That soon disappeared after our opener up at Tannadice with the big Hunskelper opening his account. At this point I thought I don't care how we play as long as we can get some trophies on board and end this hun domination, I was willing tae prostitute my ideals for some success.

We next went tae swinecastle and won convincingly and then came the 6-2 gemme and it was starting to look good now.

Our first domestic reverse exactly eight months after the humiliation at the same stadium, even though we were without Lambo and Stubbsie, initially caused me some doubt but when MON went straight out and signed Lenny and "Ramon the Treble" as he called him then I knew it was just a blimp and the rest is history, we were a big intimidating side who could also play a bit, our only concern was we had an ultra cautious manager, which was to cost us dearly, not just in trophies, but also in "playing football the Glasgow Celtic Way".

As we all know the first two seasons were magical and even though we can look at the Seville season and the amount of favours they received if we look closely enough we had more than our share of single goal victories, that IMHO is what cost us the League.

The proof in the pudding for me is when MON said that summer he knew how and why we didn't win any trophies and that would be sorted, the following season after a poor start at East End Park we started racking up the victories with goal scoring reminiscent of the good Doctor's season only this time we won the Championship in glorious fashion scoring 105 goals and losing only 25, the following season we continued where we left off, alas we were Henke lite and the pattern of season 2002/03 returned.

In the pursuit of success we did indeed lose our way and paid the price with "Black Sunday"

Now, we are back trying to play the game as Wullie Maley and the Big Mhan envisioned it, however, old habits die hard and there was and still is a price to pay.

Nevertheless for every Broadwood and snotterwell there's a Caledonian Stadium and a swinecastle, for every Bratislava, Donetsk and Copenhagen there's a Benfica, Manure, Spartak, Milan and now a Shakhtar.

Paul you inadvertently opened up the can of proverbial worms when you leaked the info about our away non clean sheets, as a support in the past we never worried about that and frankly while it's nice not to lose a goal I would rather watch a 5-3 victory over the lowly Spiders than 1-0 against the huns, eh lets rephrase that, a 1-0 victory over any team except the huns as any win against them is heavenly and none more so than:

"And then in 1957;
We faced a guy called Georgie Niven;
The game is etched on every Celtic fan,
Wilson, Mochan and McPhail;
And Willie Fernie scored as well;
As Celtic beat the Rangers 7-1"

So here in the silence of the night as we wait another dreaded away game, let's not forget:

"And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay;
They gave us Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch, Auld and Hay;
And most of the football greats;
Have passed through Parkhead's gates;
All to play football the Glasgow Celtic way" -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger greenlion2 COMMENT-DATE:25/04/08 19:41 COMMENT-BODY:A couple of questions.

Also when was the last time we came from behind to beat them?
