TITLE: Why Smith was not voted SPFA Manager of the Year AUTHOR: Paul67 DATE: 4/24/2008 11:06:00 AM ----- BODY: Do you remember the classic 80s movie, Back to the Future? Michael J Fox character’s family life was dominated by his father’s boss, a bully named Biff, who tormented the father from school days. Bullies still exist in the workplace, snarling and intimidating people they have a degree of control over in order to compensate for various inadequacies. Take Walter Smith, the man who watched Steven Naismith suffer a horrendous injury on Sunday but sent him back out onto the field to do more serious damage before incredibly blaming the pitch for the problem. After Smith shoved an SFA official during a game at Ibrox in March, Kevin Gallacher, who was at Dundee United when Smith was assistant there, said that after a transgression, “I was fortunate because I was in the boot-room so he could only jab me one: if you were in the gym you were hit with full-blown punches!” Is it any wonder Lee McCulloch and Alan McGregor both tried to play on with injuries suffered against Celtic last week? I may be wrong about Biff Smith, perhaps he is not a bully, perhaps Kevin Gallagher made the whole thing up; irrespective of this, Biff is a danger to the wellbeing of his players. In two weeks he has presided over three injured players returning to the field who subsequently exacerbated their problems and face a long term layoff. Being able to shove, jab or punch is not enough of a qualification to be a football manager, you need to know when a player is injured and act accordingly, something I am sure that is not lost on the SPFA. If you want a union to vote for you your first priority should be to look after the welfare of its members. As Back to the Future reaches a climax Biff finds himself up to his neck in the brown smelly stuff, a condition that may become all too familiar to Smith if his team lose to Celtic on Sunday. -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Celticblog COMMENT-DATE:24/04/08 11:10 COMMENT-BODY:Pick it out -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger Tricky COMMENT-DATE:24/04/08 11:11 COMMENT-BODY:Agreed. "Lest anyone be in any doubt that the Scottish Premier League is nothing but a pub league (in an administrative, as opposed to footballing, sense), the publication of two alternative fixture lists for the conclusion of the 2007-08 season should end all debate.

"One list will apply should Rangers qualify for the Uefa Cup final, the other if they do not. Shambles does not come close. Celtic are unhappy and Rangers are unhappy, albeit after briefly expressing gratitude.

"They [the SPL] are doing nothing to assist us in European competition," said the Rangers chief executive, Martin Bain. Full marks to Mr Bain for his noisy, if not entirely convincing, approximation of indignation but he really ought to know by now that an administrator's job is not to "assist" any individual club - Celtic, Rangers or whoever - but to protect the integrity of the competition. In this instance the SPL has failed miserably."

If we show the same level of commitment and will to win as we did last Wednesday night, we´ll be fine for Sunday.

On the (possible) league extension, let me check I´ve got this right reading the various comments. Rangers, after asking the SPL for help in December to try and avoid dropping into the UEFA Cup for the good of Scottish football, are now furious they are not getting a longer extension from the SPL to accommodate their quest to win the cup they asked for help not to be in? Naismith - if it is a knee ligament – this can be difficult even for experienced Physios to diagnose the severity initially. After the first pain the knee joint can feel numb to the player, who then tries to ‘run it off’. Paul Gascoigne’s experience during an FA Cup Final illustrates the point. Do you honestly think Smith knew the extent of the injury and sent him back onto the field – almost certain that as a consequence he would lose the services of the player for possibly 6 months?

Gallacher (pre-1978 – 30 years ago) was also quoted as saying – ‘"I saw that fire when I was a 13-year-old kid. Then I saw it as an apprentice when I bore the brunt of it in the boot room once. It's great to see he still has that and big Mixu has seen it at closer range than most ….. . it might not be good for kids to watch, but it's just pure passion, pure will to win …… when Walter is angry he is quite a sight but he was brilliant as a sidekick to Jim McLean at United …. you couldn't have two fiery characters so Walter often had to calm Jim down”. Does this sound like a victim of childhood abuse to you?

McCullough – if his injury was suffered during Paul Hartley’s first half lunge – he appeared to be able to play on for more than an hour – neither the Channel67 commentators nor I noticed anything strange in his movement during this period.

McGregor – appears to have turned his ankle (probably some kind of ligament strain). Many players will try to run this off. It is not comparable to the Achilles tendon injury where, even if ‘only’ a strain, a player cannot put any weight on the front part of his foot.

On the basis of the above you conclude that Walter Smith is ‘a danger to the wellbeing of his players’ ……. and further ‘Being able to shove, jab or punch is not enough of a qualification to be a football manager’. Perhaps seven league titles is?

I am not inclined to Walter Smith as a manager and always rejoice in any defeat of RFC as an ‘Institution’. Naismith was clearly in agony - Martin Hardie had stood on his knee. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Naismith was sent back on rather than edge closer to the time when payments have to be made for Thomas Buffel. Gascoigne and Ian Durrant drew attention to the devastating consequences of knee injuries. Smith had no right to take a chance, especially on such a young player, then blame the Hampden pitch.

"McGregor – appears to have turned his ankle (probably some kind of ligament strain). Many players will try to run this off. It is not comparable to the Achilles tendon injury where, even if ‘only’ a strain, a player cannot put any weight on the front part of his foot.

I too want them to be humped. I always want them to be humped. Every single game they play; I want them to be humped. But, as you know we don’t always get what we want.

If they get a semi-decent result tonight they cannot, in ego, risk injury against us.

Further, the closer they come to their ‘Nirvana’, the more they must play their ‘best eleven'.

(they've bearly got eleven as it stands today)

Don’t forget, from now until the end of the season, every game they play is meaningful, not only to them, but to every team they play.

Bottom line: we could still lose to them Sunday and still win the league. The more games they have to play, and the harder, the better.

There are times when you have to lose a battle (face) to win the war.

The ball however, is most certainly in their court… unfortunately.

“It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Naismith was sent back on rather than edge closer to the time when payments have to be made for Thomas Buffel”. Buffel was already on the pitch – he replaced Chris Burke 8 mins earlier. Steven Davis replaced Naismith.

In my view McGregor signalled that he needed treatment on a couple of occasions. He appeared to me to try to ‘run it off’. The reaction of the RFC Physio & Doctor did not appear to be of the ‘get him off now’ variety so why would the manager overrule the medical people at that point in a critical game with regard to a critical position (goalkeeper)?

I agree that a 1-2 tonight is the ideal result – leaves them faced with a dilemma that will play on players’ minds. A convincing win for Fiorentina tonight simply means that RFC will rest key players for the second leg. Fiorentina will respond in kind and rest their key players (Mutu is one yellow from a suspension and they are trying to secure a CL spot)– it’ll be a real ‘go though the motions game’ – Fiorentina will not try to force a pointless thrashing of RFC – it’s not in the Italian pro football nature. I don't agree with your assessment of McGregor's reaction.

And neither do I agree that the actions of the manager can be excused because of assumptions based on the medical team's assessment.

It appears to me that there is an atmosphere at Rangers whereby nothing but getting a result at all costs counts.

As for the medical staff, I'll say it again though few people take it seriously. Rangers have already breached UEFA and World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines prohibiting medical intervention that masks injury for the sake of competition.

The available evidence is that Rangers have twice continued to play visibly injured young pros who then went on to exacerbate injuries and have disregarded the wellbeing of their players in other instances, probably due to the fact that they have the third-smallest squad in Scotland.

On the other side, we have your apparent assumption that Sir Walter

“The modern professional football player can be overscheduled with a high match density because of domestic league, cups, tournaments and possible national team duty. Occupational medicine is not about trying to compensate for the ever-increasing demands on players through the use of pain killers or anti-phlogistic drugs.

“Continued treatment with these may have serious long-term consequences that can not be justified by occupational medicine nor medical ethics.”

DEFINITION OF DOPING

“Doping is any attempt either by a player, or at the instigation of another person such as a manager, coach, trainer, doctor, physiotherapist or masseur, to enhance mental and physical performance unphysiologically or to treat ailments or injury – when this is medically unjustified – for the sole purpose of taking part in a competition. Doping contravenes the ethics of sport, constitutes an acute or chronic health hazard for players, and may have fatal consequences…”

OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE

“Part of doping may come under the scope of occupational medicine. …

“It is a different proposition for professional footballers to take drugs to compensate for the ever-increasing demands made on them but the serious long-term consequences of such a practice cannot be justified. Even if there is no doping in terms of performance enhancing drugs being taken, it is still considered as treatment intended to suppress the symptoms of injuries and over-exertion.

“Only a firm stand taken by sports and occupational medicine will be able at least to protect players partially from such long-term damage. This is yet another reason why the campaign against true doping must be actively pursued.” -------- COMMENT-AUTHOR:Blogger The Spirit of Arthur Lee COMMENT-DATE:24/04/08 14:57 COMMENT-BODY:WiggyGuy
