Young POTY award the most telling comment on McGeady

Congratulations to Aiden McGeady, Player’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year, a fitting reward for his magnificent form this season.

When Kevin Keegan was at the peak of his abilities he responded to a comment that he had an abundance of natural talent by insisting that sheer hard work was behind his position in the game. Since breaking into the Celtic team four years ago, Aiden has shown sublime talent. He has the ability to control the field as well as he controls the ball, drawing three, sometimes four, players towards him before finding space for an escape or a pass.

But his natural talent was only ever going to get him so far, he needed to add the missing element to his game, speed, and that came from hard work in the gym and training field.

By the time European Champions Milan visited on Champions League duty, Aiden was thriving in his role as chief creator and out-ball in Scottish football. He scored the only goal in the win over Benfica and sparkled when Celtic were subjugated by a superior Barcelona.

The season has not been without its challenges. His increasing importance to Celtic has led to an increase in racially motivated taunting from the stands and bookings, the latter may be related to the former.

The secondary award, for Young Player of the Year, is perhaps the most telling comment that can be made about Aiden McGeady. He is young; still five years away from his prime. What a mouth-watering thought.

    Dear Mr Broadfoot,

For my own clarification considering the apology issued yesterday by your sister newspaper. I would like to bring to your attention if I may the hypocrisy of your article in todays Herald entitled

" Internet idiots are drowning out right-thinking Old Firm majority"

    Recently we have seen surrounding this years SPL race;

A fit Barry Robson denied the chance of an international cap seemingly due to Rangers insistence at pulling out five of their players not four as regularly reported by yourself from the Scotland squad for the Croatia match. There was a difference of opinion of the events between Celtic and the SFA, yet this was never fully investigated. Why?

Three days later was the supposed investigation by UEFA into Celtics sectarian chanting. Two days before the SPL title decider at Ibrox.

    If I may quote your aticle;

"The right-minded majority have had their thought-provoking opinions drowned out by a tedious din from those who seek a form of internet-driven infamy; the kind who have taken to inconveniencing UEFA every Monday morning with their pathetic reel of YouTube one-upmanship." Hence my question at who you are directing your ire at ? Fellow journalists who are in a position of influence or fans - no matter how deranged with typewriters?

    As far as I am concerned and considering your a broadsheet national newspaper and the recent hulabaloo regarding the coin throwing incident at Celtic Park within the journalist industry. Can you please confirm if your article in todays Herald was aimed at mentally retarded internet "devil dug shell suit wearing" users or your fellow journalists ? especially considering Celtics recent exposure of the root of the complaint of sectarian chanting at the recent Barcelona Celtic game was;

“This was simply an attempt by a journalist to manufacture a story and tarnish the good name of Celtic Football Club. Celtic FC ... by all accounts it was a Sun journalist

... and all performed the day before the "SPL decider" derby game at Ibrox. Yet again this was never fully investigated or reported by your paper.

May I also quote your sister newspaper from last Sunday

Some fans would probably rather have a bead-rattling Hoopy the Huddle Hound in the dug-out."
    SH last week

and the subsequent apology from yesterday edition

The Sunday Herald's stance on bigotry and sectarianism is clear: as a newspaper we have consistently and systematically challenged prejudice wherever we have found it. We have written dozens of articles - in the sports section, in the news section, in opinion and debate and in the magazine - condemning those who continue to perpetuate sectarianism and praising the considerable efforts of both Celtic FC and Rangers FC, among others, to stamp it out.

This is seen by the "right thinking Old Firm majority" as an absolute lie.

The Jock Stein smear amongst the Ibrox faithful hit a crescendo at CP last Wednesday. A clear majority of the Rangers support that was present at Celtic park indulged in this chant. Together with chants that the "famine is over, go back home " and potatoes thrown not for the first time on the field at Celtic Park. This was incessant throughout the entire game. Yet this is chosen to be ignored by your good self your newspaper and your industry.

Your former boss recently referred to this uneven interpretation of events as "winalot" journalism. The gist being that if you play the game the powers that be will enhance your career. Getting good exclusive copy is mannah from heaven for a journalist. This I can understand but not to the extent of compromising your journalistic principles and scruples.

I´m sorry but I do not accept your obviously feigned outrage or the lie that is the concept of the Old-Firm as far as equating the supports between Celtic and Rangers are concerned. Far too often, that means always, you have to run for cover under the cloak of respectability that is the mantle of the "Old Firm". Seeking refuge in being equated with the Celtic support. We saw the permanent refusal of the Scottish media to question Rangers signing policy for over 100 years and what we have witnessed in the last weeks a concerted campaign to undermine Celtics attempt at wrestling the SPL lead back from Rangers.

You have a choice to make considering your position. Follow the lead of your former boss and be taken seriously and judged fairly by your peers. Or be seen as being far worse than anything you pretend to be disgusted by. In fact from where I am standing you and your industry have a moral and civilised duty to interpret events fairly and evenly.

It is very apparent that this is not the case and due to the consistent denial from you and your industry in actually dealing with the matter in question you and journalist of your ilk are not helping the matter at all. In fact it has the opposite affect. Your denial will be interpreted by those with less responsibility and less impartiality ;-) as yourself as tacit approval of their behaviour. In fact by deliberately ignoring the situation and by attempting to pervert the singularly nasty and repellent image of the Glasgow Rangers support you become their voice. Their leader. They will consider that if their behaviour is not worth reporting then it cannot be considered to be that bad. A disservice to your profession. To your customers and also to your beloved football club. The actions of a weak but ambitious man I am sure you will agree.

I think that most people would prefer to read an article from you that is based on honesty and integrity for the greater good of man rather than one that is for the greater good of the majority of Glasgow Rangers support. If we presume that the support at Celtic Park last week is representational of the complete Rangers support and why shouldn´t it be?

Any addict will tell you that the problem cannot be solved until acceptance of the existence of the problem is admitted. Addicts remain longer in denial by seeking the company of other addicts. I am not trying to describe the Scottish newspaper industry or the Glasgow Rangers support here. I am simply trying to advise you as a good Celtic supporter that you are completely unqualified to have written the article that you penned in today´s Herald.

If you really wish for society to be fairer and the SPL race not to be side tracked by repugnant demented agendas. They you especially as a Rangers supporter combined with working in the Scottish newspaper industry need to accept your issues and deal with them.

Having witnessed for 45 years the denial over this issue in Scotland, it has consigned me to the role of a cynic. Can I be blamed for that ? Especially when I read what I read from your pen today. I urge you to seek help with your denial as far from Charlotte Square in Edinburgh as possible and to seek psychiatric help as soon as possible. A phone call to your former boss perhaps.

    your sincerely

    Awe Naw

Congratulations Aiden, that boy has the world at his feet!

Going back to the Rangers game; two incidents stuck in my mind in particular. There were two occasions in the game were Rangers broke into our box with speed on the counter and on both occasions Hartley tracked back and intercepted the ball with ease. If you have watched Rangers in Europe this season you would have seen how much panic Darcheville has caused the opposition in those situations so all credit to Hartley for putting him in his place. I forget who the was the second Rangers player but I felt those set the tone for the match.

Can't complain too much about performance on Saturday, although the attitude of the fans in front of me was fairly dispiriting (sat on their hands the whole match, only opening their gobs to howl derision when things didn't go our way and yet I was the one getting funny looks when screaming "C'mon Celtic" - I dunno, maybe they were chastising me for my lack of originality).

Anyway, onward and upwards - that's three games now the Govan mob haven't been able to win in 90 mins but I'm not expecting that stat to be trumpeted too loudly in the papers today.

Well done Aidan, and keep up the great work Paul.

I don't expect any announcement from the SPL about fixtures this week. I believe they are sticking their collective heads in the sand and hoping that the problem goes away next Sunday. Had we lost on Wednesday I'm sure an announcement would have been made.

The longer we keep the pressure on by winning, the more difficult it gets for them to do anything that might be seen as favouring the bad guys.

Awe Naw, a wee word on the Barry Robson/SFA incident.

Barry reported a leg knock when he arrived with the squad, but insisted he would be able to play. The Scotland doctor examined him and called the Celtic doctor to say he thought the player should be rested. Technically, the Celtic doctor had the opportunity to dispute the diagnosis, but as he was only at the end of the telephone was not in a good position to do so.

Barry was upset at being sent home as he wanted to play for his country and he was 100% fit on the Wednesday.

I don’t think there is much of an issue over this one. Had Barry reported a knock but was subsequently played and aggravated the knock ahead of the Ibrox game, we would have had more of a case to be upset.

    Welcome verbatim.

McManus69, Gordon J, I have an article in reserve for later (waiting on Blogger to fail) on the subject on what the SFA are doing right now instead of arranging fixtures.

There is no reason for the delay; after they know the result of the Fiorentina tie there will only be two midweeks left and at least three, potentially four games to play midweek.

Broadfoot: (noun) One of very limited ability elevated through extreme circumstances to a high-profile position to which he is clearly unsuited.

Is it a coincidence that Darryl and Kirk share the same name? In the words of Derek Johnstone: I'm not so sure.

In some ways I don't want to be too hard on the lad - he really IS trying to write better and decipher the Scottish football writers' manual of even-handedness.

And at least he has cited the RST for their nonsense.

But did anyone else notice that in the interests of "balance" he ridiculously exaggerates the reaction of Celtic fans while reporting accurately the campaign of the RST?

I suspect that is lost on Darryl - the fact that to portray "one lot as bad as the other" he has to minimise or ignore the issue of racist abuse and distort the reaction of Celtic fans.

I won't "flatter" myself that he reads my own blog but I'm one of the ones that pointed out that Rangers had the names and addresses of all fans who went to Lisbon. That was precisely why the ticket allocation was bought up and given to people hand-picked by the club - so that they could monitor their behaviour closely. Is it ridiculous to suggest that they should have had the banner removed or dissociated themselves from it?

I really think Darryl doesn't understand that because I very much doubt that he ever thinks that deeply about anything. 20 years ago he would never have got near the position of Chief Football Writer at The Herald.

There are few good writers out there and The Herald obviously couldn't afford anyone good after Spiers left.

    As previously said:

    WELL DONE AIDEN!

here's hoping he can add a third gong to his tally this season.....the Championship medal!!

    Bhoy Sean,

I don't know if this is the one you mean or not, but there was one incident in the second half when PH tracked back 40yds or so matching bazza fergushun's run and comfortably nudged him out the way to allow the ball to run out of play for a goal kick to Celtic.

Invariably a player in the defensive holding-role will be close to his defenders, picking up loose ball/second ball, making tackles, tracking runs. Then when in possession making short passes onto those deemed more intelligent in the use of the ball.
Eg, look no further than Javier Mascherano at Liverpool or Yaya Toure at Barca, Claude Makelele is another. Even Neilly Bhoy in the MON years, his last couple of seasons to a lesser extent and also Paul Lambert.
I would urge you to watch the Borussia Dortmund v Juventus CL Final which is fairly regularly shown on ESPN classics. See how little Lambert is involved but how important his role is to his team.

I'm not saying PH is as good as those players, but merely using them to explain why PH will not be seen getting in front of our strikers the way he did at hearts and why it is likely he will not be as prominent as other players.
Watch the game from last Wed again and watch how many times he intercepted rangers passes, how many second balls he picked up and how many runs he tracked. Chances are those who think he is over-rated will be surprised.

    HAIL! HAIL!

    Paul67,

If Barry Robson was 100% fit on Wednesday and I believe please correct me if I am wrong was denied the chance of a fitness test to prove it. He requested one and was denied it ? Now unless his leg was hanging off thats unusual. Especially considering the number of withdrawals and quality of the opposition

It was all about timing. The only deduction that I can come too was that the decision to send him home was taken early far too early by the SFA ? and I may add for the benefit of Rangers PR. So that it was an old firm withdrawal and not just a Rangers withdrawal.

Thanks for the info but I dont think it alters anything

Paul you say seem to say that the responsibility for finding the dates for Rangers games lies with the SFA. Do you have information confirming this as, according to the SPL Handbook, responsibility seems to be the province of the SPL Board, see below.

SECTION B: FIXTURES & SEASON STRUCTURING
B1.1 All League Matches fixtures shall be specified by the Board as soon as
practicable prior to the commencement of the Season following consultation with the SFA and the SFL. Subject to the terms of any Commercial Contract, League Matches shall normally be played on Saturday afternoons, and Clubs so far as reasonably practicable shall be a Home Club on one week and a Visiting Club the next. The Board shall have discretion to reschedule any League Match as it shall consider appropriate.
B1.2 All League Matches shall, unless rearranged on the application of the
competing Clubs and with the approval of the Board, or on the instruction of
the Board in accordance with these Rules, be played on the dates and times
scheduled at the commencement of the Season. The Board shall have
authority to order that any League Match be moved from the scheduled date
in order to facilitate the re-arrangement of fixtures, provided that, where any
proposed re-arrangement has not previously been approved by any Clubs
which might be affected thereby, the Board shall consult with and shall take
into account any representations made by such Clubs before making any
order under this Rule. The Board may refuse applications for approval made
within ten weeks of the scheduled date because of the effect such a change
may have on the Coupon (listing the fixtures of the League) published by
members of the Pools Promoters Association or other successor body.

The members of said Board are Lex Gold (CEO), Capbell Christie (Falkirk) Chair, Eric Riley (Celtic), Rod Petrie (Hibs), Eddie Thompson (Dundee Utd).

I'm a member of the Celtic One Membership scheme at present, but things may change come next season,as Celtic have decided to change the rules.

The incentive that I had for joining Celtic One was,You got a chance to purchase tickets for CL games, also any away games where tickets were not uplfted by Celtic season ticket holders, who don't require them.
A Celtic One Member has the chance to purchase these tickets a day before they go on General Sale.

It seems Celtic in their wisdom, are withdrawing the only Benefit that I, as a Member use,The chance to buy tickets the day before they go on General Sale.

I'm not sure what it costs to be a Member now,as it's done by Direct Debit,I haven't noticed the cost,But the last price I remember was £32 per season.

The reason I joined Celtic One was,to get tickets for my Nephew, he works in London, and comes up about 6 times a year.

It seems to me that Celtic are shooting themselves in the foot,Who in their right minds going to fork out money, for something their not going to get.
I dont for the life of me understand their wisdom, unless the scheme is running at a loss, and they want to lose they're existing customers.

I don't like to stop my Standing Order,But theres no way I'm paying for something I'm not going to get next season.

    No Brainer.

    Two things :

I've just read the Herald sports section in the Bow bar in Embra (the pub's copy I may hasten to add). When will the Herald see the error of its way and turf Broadfoot ? What a loser he is. There is more sense aired here than in any of his articles/reports. My theory is that Kirk and Daryll have swapped places for the past wee while, with Daryll playing left back for Rankers and Kirk writing for the Herald.

On a separate note, the sense of satisfaction at seeing Walt's comments re: the Hampden pitch. When a manager complains about the state of the pitch then you know he's feeling the heat !

Has there been one word of criticism of Wattie for sending Naismith back out with what appeared to be knee ligament damage?

That's two players he has left on when they were unfit to continue Naismith and McGregor.

Ferguson is obviously in trouble otherwise he would have been on the bench yesterday - he would have had a full week to rest before Sunday's match.

Dailly is by his own admission drugged up to the eyes with painkillers - to get him to turn out - and I'll say it again, this breaches UEFA regulations.

Smith is also talking about McCulloc playing with a broken foot. Is this a responsible manager? In Naismith's case especially he risked the boy's future career, especially as he insisted the pitch was so bad. Do you really send a young pro who has just had his knee stamped on back onto a bumpy pitch?

There is a Scottish media myth that Walter Smith is a dignified man of high principle. The reality is that he sends his team out to cheat and batter their opponents and has no interest in the welfare of his players.

I couldn't find anything about it on the official site. Where did you see it? I briefly considered membership, as opposed to my season card, given the number of games I have missed this year due to work, Heathrow, fog etc. Looks like I'll be renewing again after all.

For any blogger who may be down in the dumps at Carlisle United's defeat at the hands of Southend, can any cheer be taken from the fact that Charlie Mulgrew scored Southend's first?

I also found Captain unbookable omission yesterday an interesting one. He wont play on Thursday yet is not considered for action yesterday. That leaves 12 days of recovery between Celtic and Rangers games? He´s crocked and they are keeping it hush hush.

Whats the score with Sasa Papac he plays one game in every three?

The other interesting story was Buffels reappearance yesterday. Does that invoke a number of games clause where Rangers have to cough up? or is it only SPL games?

I never thought we´d see him again in a Rangers shirt.

Cuellar, Thompson, Broadfoot and Davis playing a good two full games before us next Sunday is also good news

Paul 67: That is exactly what happened.

A St Johnstone player stood on Naismith's knee, coming down on it with his full weight and obviously extending it partially.

Naismith was clearly in great pain but was taken off for a few minutes then returned to the field. A few minutes later he collapsed with no other player near him.

The Broadfoot article is typical of many written by Scottish sports journalists.

These articles share the following characteristics:

    1. They say very little. So Broadfoot's article could be reduced to:

"The climax of the SPL is being spoiled by Old Firm fans who complain about the behaviour of their opposite number."

    2. What little they say is feeble or just nonsense. In this case nonsense in the form of a non-sequitur:

The "argument rests on two notions:
    (a) The turning of the climax of the season into a "turn off" and
    (b) bloggers complaining about opposing fans.

    (a) and (b) lack any logical connection.

    3. False equivalence between Celtic and Rangers (sorry, Rangers and Celtic) in this case by equating a fact concerning one with hyperbole with the other, thus creating an untruth, i.e. Celtic fans are as bad as Rangers fans (on the criteria outlined above).

While the Rangers' Supporters' Trust did call for Celtic Park to be closed (or at least the game to be played behind closed doors), no one demanded that David Murray "be hauled before the United Nations" for the racist Naka banner.

    4. Consistency is absent

Those who express their views on blogs "seek a form of internet-driven infamy" but earlier are condemned as being "untraceable." So they are famously anonymous?

    5. Relevant facts and debates are omitted.

I refer to potato-hurling and chants concerning famines and urging a minority group to "go home".

I suppose in Boadfoot's mind, point 5 proves his point (though he would be hard pushed to find an equivalent from Celtic).

I think one of the clearest evidence of media bias can be found if you examine the treatment of fringe players.

Think of these Celtic players: Riordan, Fernandez, Balde, Zurawski etc. When a Celtic player is not getting a game all we hear about in the media is how upset the player is or how our managers are ruining their careers, and we even get conspiracy theories that the player isn't getting a game because of differences between Lawell and Strachan over money.

Now think about how the press treat similar situations with Rangers players. Have you ever heard Walter Smith being accused of ruining Gow's career? We have had a situation were Ball wasn't playing because he would trigger an appearance fee which Rangers actually expected the player to pay and I don't remember much condemnation of the club. It also reminds me of Roy Carrol having to buy out his contract in January despite agreeing to sell him to Derby, a situation which left Paul Jewell exasperated. I have a feeling that Buffel is also left out the team for money reasons also; he is a player who has a pedigree which Derek Riordan would die for and yet nothing gets said about his non appearances.

There is a definite imbalance in the way the press treat these instances.

I was not surprised that Ferguson didn't play yesterday but I was surprised that he wasn't even on the bench. So maybe he is crocked!

I don't know if I want him to be too crocked to be able to play. He is at just the right level of "crockness" at the moment where he can and will play but not be at his best.

The failed Sunderland striker said in an interview before the game that he was not fielding a weakened side, he was just freshening things up! They clearly are struggling when Buffel is not only on the bench but ends up playing. That's going to cost them a few bob.

    Hail Hail

If Andreas and Lee are still injured for the Huns game do you think that WGS would supprise everybody with going three at the back.

I think this could be a strong line-up for us. Everybody is talking about keeping Balde in the team rather than Caldwell but I feel that GC is playing some of his best football in his career as a Celtic player right now and should not be drop. I felt we missed him on Saturday as our central defenders had trouble bringing the ball out. Preferably I would drop Mick but we all know he is not going to drop his Captain.

If we went a 3-5-2 it would also allow WGS to bring back Skoosh into the side which I am sure he wants to do.

If we went 3-5-2 the line up should be.

    Boruc

    Caldwell Balde Mick

    Skoosh Naka Hartly Aiden Robson

    JVoH Samaras

I would prefer to see young Marcus Wilson at the right midfielder as I think that is where he should be playing but that would be too radical for WGS, saying that I don't think the 3-5-2 system has entered his ginger thoughts.

I'm not a fan of 3-5-2 in general, I think it's out of the coaching manual (having been in for a season or two).

Too often, managers (and fans) make the mistake of thinking it's a good place to get an extra man but if you think about it - we'd actually concede territory to Rangers here. 3 centre halfs to deal with 1 Rangers centre forward?

Similarly, the wing back role is a specialist position - not a place to store spare midfielders which is often what happens.

Whilst we probably have the centre halfs and the BMW / Audi / VW engine of Hinkel for the right we've an Alan Thompson sized glaring hole on the left.

I also don't think it's suits the purpose of this particular Rangers outfit.

  • At 21/04/08 15:29, Blogger dontbrattbackinanger said…

Interesting that Mo'N has AV now playing 4-3-3, rather than the 3-5-2 he favoured at Celtic.

Also our favourite Bulgarian is settling in there now, having failed to impress initially. No reason why SB can't do the same for us.

Oh, and I'm now more confident we will win the League- it seems less far- fetched than JPrescott's bulimia..

    NBT,
I think it's highly unlikely that we'll ever see 3 at the back under GS. He's never liked that system and I don't think he's ever played it at any of his previous clubs. The closest we'll get to it is when Hinkel pushes into right midfield when Naka drifts inside.
To play 3 at the back, a team needs at least 2 (preferably 3)cental defenders who are comfortable on the ball and good readers of the game. 2 wing backs with pace also helps. Arguably we don't have any of these. Just my opinion.

I think the number of forwards you play should be linked in direct proportion to your player budget.

We should bear ;-) in mind that we were 4.4.2 when Cuellar hand balled but needed to go 4-3-3 against 10 man Rangers to get the clincher.

    Aw naw @14.30.

Papac actually starts quite a few games. There is a very simple reason for this.
Mc Gregor blames him for EVERY mistake made by the Rangers back four - no matter who is at fault. Once the opposition get a shot or header in and its saved or goes wide - McGergor starts screaming at - Papac! - every time. He says not a word to Weir (too old), Cuellar (too ugly) or Broadfoot (too poor) or anyone else. Its always poor 'ol Papac. His face is the picture of misery.
It's hilarious! Watch out for it.

I was having a discussion with i think Sean South and Стахановец about changes over the summer, with specific reference to our nemesis from the CL qualifier, Roman Pavlyuchenko.

I am of the opinion that we need a striker of that calable in order to be a more potent force at home and in the CL. Sean agreed in principle that having such a player would be a good thing, however he felt that say an £8m fee and £30-40k a week would be too significant an outlay on one player.

So my point is this, are we in a position to spend such figures on one (or even two) quality players? (Who presumably would hold resale value)
or, if we are in such a position, would such an approach be a mistake in terms of putting all our eggs in one basket.

Heres the jist of what the letter said.

As part of our planning for next season,we will be making changes to the membership scheme.

The most significant being, there will no longer be any ticket benefits associated with Membership from next
season onwards due to demand from full season ticket holders.

This next bit confuses me a bit.

It is our intention to continue to focus on season ticket sales and as a CelticOne member;you will be given an automatic place on our Priority Waiting List for Season Tickets for next season.

"I'm a season ticket holder and don't require to be put on a prority waiting list".

So I gather that is a no to 3-5-2.

I can't imagine WGS using it myself, If Hinkel is injured I just don't want to see GC moved to Right Back, I prefer him in the centre of defence or in the future as a holding midfielder. I don't think Young Caddis will start as you need two under 21s on the bench and I think that is WGS prefer option for him.

On Saturday I was not convince with Bobo and Mick, I felt if it was any other team than the Dons we would have been in trouble as the Sheepies were mince(why do I have the craving for Shepherd's Pie now).

I also think that if JVoH is healthy he should start, Samaras and Skippy are too much of a muchness, both like to go wide while JVoH is a bit more direct and at times on Saturday we missed that. I would have JVoH and Samaras starting with Skippy coming off the bench. I agree with a previous poster that we must have someone better in the youth system than Killen, surely Hutchinson or Sheridan is a better option.
