Celtic target Croatian international midfielder - Celtic Quick News

Celtic target Croatian international midfielder

| | Comments (194)

The Croatian press this morning reported Celtic have bid €5m for Dinamo Zagreb defensive midfielder and Croatian international Ognjen Vukojević (24).  I understand, however, that Vukojević is only one of a number of possibilities under consideration.

Vukojević joined Dinamo Zagreb two years ago and made his international debut in October 2007, scoring a goal against Slovakia.   He is a highly mobile player and at just over 6ft tall has a strong physical presence.

Forgot to say, I'm told he is called "Ogi".

first

My first podium! Id like to thank mam and and dad! and of course Mr 67!

Brendan

being scooped by Paul has to be a first - congrats

Paul - you and I know we need defenders and forwards - why another midfielder - is Sno on the move?

VertWolf

More on the Bad Blue Bhoy here

FTLT- maybe Donegal Celtic would like to apply to take Gretna's place in the Scottish league?

Paul67 -

Forgot to say, I'm told he is called "Ogi".

Thank goodness for that!

Can I start the first chant?

Oh Ogi, Ogi, Ogi!
Oh Ogi, Ogi, Ogi!
Oh Ogi, Ogi, Ogi!

Thanks

Cruly

Big Jock was always brilliant at stealing Huns thunder. Good to see we are targeting early and while the focus will be be on the Orcs templing through Manchester it will not go unnoticed that we are strengthening the squad.

Forgot to say, I'm told he is called "Ogi".

Well made it safely into
West Nile street. Relatively unscaithed
and only a few paces from the office just as
his holiness copped it full blast.

Marching season atmos , thought these
bams were away to a football match?

Pacific Pete is tipping a win for his team tonight - come on the (1st) Pope's XI !

Is he called "Ogi"? I wish someone would say.....

Out thanks to Zbyszek, who spotted this one hitting the Croatian news sites well into the night in Poland and gave me a head start this morning.

Brendan, sorry for nipping in there.

VertWolf, if this guy is to replace Sno we should both be worried. I believe there will soon be a big rebuild job underway.

Curly, is bound to happen.

Paul, as you say, there may well be other possibilities but I hope some of them are not defensive midfielders. A good left back will do nicely for starters.

From last thread.
BloggerGG :- You said "I sincerely hope your team is severely embarassed and the goals conceded surpass double figures. (Before half time.)
'GG without bias, bigotry or shame."
I believe the latter two but do you honestly expect me to believe the first :-)

AntrimBhoy :- I never defend sectarian songs however I would like to point out that a large majority of the Rangers support do not associate the bouncy with the tragic murder in Belfast. I was unaware of the connection myself until it was pointed out to me on here during an exchange of jokes with Noel90.

DBBIA :- Congratulations on the Carlisle score the other night, things are looking good for your "wee team"

I noticed numerous scarves and flags on the M74 as I travelled north to work today.
As one of my colleagues so aptly put it - "Did you see all the litter on the M74 this morning?"

I've also been asked in a an attempt to wind me up "Aren't you going to the game tonight?"
To which I always reply "Of course not - I can support Zenit just fine from here"

Hail Hail.

Hail, hail,

EdUrsus

Enjoy your day, enjoy the event, but make sure you pack a Carmyle (organza) cardigan in case it turns a bit cold :)

Broadswordcallingdannyboy

From last thread, but would that be the shop next to The Vogue. A fantastic Celtic pub frequented by my grandpa, my dad, my uncles, my brother, myself.

STANDING UP...

Currently who would he replace in the first 11? Hartley? Suppose Hartley now is the wrong side of 30.

Just did a wee google search on this and the Daily Mail reported this on the 24 April as an exclusive so maybe this has a bit of truth to it.

And again, oh well

If he is in the squad for the European Championships and Celtic are keen to secure this signing I think they should get it done sooner rather than later because if he has a good tournament his value is bound to increase.

I must admit I feel very sorry for Evander if he is the player to make way. His performance in the second half against Barcelona was first class and he was very unlucky not to play more games this season.

Celtic are contemplating a summer move for combative Croatian international midfielder Ognjen Vukojevic

The Dinamo Zagreb star has emerged as a target for Gordon Strachan after rating highly in a continental search for new talent.

Capped three times for his country, Vukojevic is an uncompromising defensive holding player dubbed 'Croatia's Rino Gattuso'

The 24-year- old confirmed that reputation with the crunching Hampden challenge which ruled Darren Fletcher out of Manchester United's title charge in George Burley's debut as Scotland manager.

Competition for Vukojevic, rated in the £2million bracket, could be fierce.

A former Under-21 international, the six-footer is expected to feature in the Euro 2008 squad due to be named by Slaven Bilic next month.

And Espanyol, Arsenal and Bayern Munich are just three of the clubs linked with the player in the last year.

After tracking the midfielder's form for some time, however, Celtic could creep under the radar before the European Championships after watching the player in last night's derby match between Dinamo and NK Zagreb.

Sportsmail understands the other positions Strachan wants to strengthen are left back and central defence, while a striker could also be brought in even if Georgios Samaras joins permanently from Manchester City.

That Strachan is already making plans for next season despite the alleged uncertainty over his own future is significant. Defeat in this Sunday's final Old Firm showdown could once again crank up an already intolerable level of pressure on the Celtic manager.

Last summer's £4.5m signing from Hibs Scott Brown is available once more after suspension.

In Brown's absence, former Dundee United captain Barry Robson has slotted into central midfield and helped Celtic to wins over Motherwell, Rangers and Aberdeen.

Strachan, meanwhile, has taken American Under-23 keeper Dominic Cervi on trial.

Great news, new site for CQN does not get caught in my works blog filter so I can post again during the day !

Defensive midfielder, what about a defensive defender? Are we to go another close season with GS not strengthening the defense, or do you believe that is a target Paul?. Surely we need a left back ?

Also, I assume we are not buying an international midfielder to sit on the bench, so who do we think he will replace then?

You talk of major rebuilding, assume that's two way, who do you see going (apart from the obvious Bobo, etc).

ogi ogi ogi!
oi oi oi!

sorry it had to be done

Hail Hail Paul,

First time posting, though i have been reading your articles for some time now.

Lets just hope that the huns lose tonight, their brand of anti football should finally give way to a team that are all about attacking and fast sharp passing.

Would be a sad day for football as we know it otherwise, recall an event on May 25th 1967.

Polly67

Hi guys,

I'm going out in Glasgow City Centre with my brother... and I've been racking my brain for a good pub to watch the game in tonight... Needless to say I'm aiming for a pub which will be more green than blue. I'm frankly more nervous about this match than I was when we made the UEFA final... Of course, expecting my first child at that time was a distraction! What about Mollys? Any other suggestions?

B

Sorry if this has been posted before

Henrik Larsson has made a surprise return to the Sweden squad for Euro 2008.

The Helsingborgs striker has been named in Lars Lagerback's 23-man squad for next month's finals in Austria and Switzerland.

Larsson quit the international arena after Sweden crashed out to Germany in the second round of the 2006 World Cup.

Former Celtic ace and Manchester United loanee Larsson confirmed he did not give it a second thought before accepting Lagerback's request: "I said yes pretty much right away.

Exciting

"I think football is extremely exciting and I love playing football. ... I wasn't counting on playing football this long and above all that I would be doing this well."

The return of Celtic legend Larsson will come as a massive boost for Sweden as they will face Spain, Greece and Russia in Group D.

Sweden's full 23-man squad

Andreas Isaksson (Manchester City), Rami Shaaban (Hammarby), Johan Wiland (Elfsborg Boras); Olof Mellberg (Aston Villa), Petter Hansson (Stade Rennes), Mikael Nilsson (Panathinaikos), Niclas Alexandersson (IFK Gothenburg), Andreas Granqvist (Helsingborg), Daniel Majstorovic (Basel), Fredrik Stoor (Rosenborg Trondheim), Mikael Dorsin (CFR Cluj); Tobias Linderoth (Galatasaray), Daniel Andersson (Malmo), Anders Svensson (Elfsborg Boras), Kim Kallstrom (Olympique Lyon), Christian Wilhelmsson (Deportivo Coruna), Fredrik Ljungberg (West Ham United), Sebastian Larsson (Birmingham City); Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter Milan), Johan Elmander (Toulouse), Marcus Allback (FC Copenhagen), Markus Rosenberg (Werder Bremen), Henrik Larsson (Helsingborg).

donbrattbackinanger - hope you caught my reply on the previous thread

Edward - I do take on board what you are saying in that I know many of your fans are ignorant of the meaning of this song/chant. Should the club or supporters groups not then have a duty to eradicate it though? Or do you just accept it and pass it off as ambiguous? Just a question, not spoiling for a row, interested to hear your views on it.

Mort 9.33

Big Sno will develope as a player but sdadly, not with us and not in the SPL.His style, like Donati,s is best suited elsewhere. Not by chance has our title winning aspirations been given a huge boost, by the inclusion of a combatative B R.

My choice for captain next year.

Mon the Zenit... in a Kevin Keegan stylee!!??

Awe_Naw..

Looking at Sweden's forwards you would still have to say that at 36, Henrik Larsson is still the best of the lot.

I have to be honest and say I don't think a central midfield of PH & BR will get us anywhere in the CL ..... except maybe the UEFA Cup.

Bhoydell, I have taken your suggestion from last week on board. More soon.

It’s early days and beyond this all I can do is speculate, but I’m sure the defence will be looked at.

Welcome Polly67, love the name.

jonnybhoy

Sadly I think you might be right. I just hope we don't come up against him in a Champions League game when he is playing for a good continental side.

Mort,

Was undecided on whom to support in the EC. Now its decided. Sweden again! sorry Artur, Sorry Georgios, Sorry Jan

Me and my wee brar met up with lots of Sweden fans during 2006 WC. I also met kevtic his brar and a few bhoys. After lashings of ginger beer and a hearty sing alon etc.

Looking forward to the EC I have tickets for Turkey V Switzerland . Hoping to be reacquainted with Henrik Larsson Choir ensemble from 2006 and spending a few days chilling in Switzerland at some point.

I´d love to see Henk loft that trophy high

Antrim Bhoy, Ulster Celt- read them both, thanks. I think it's a story that'll interest a few folk on here so any further background you can give will be most welcome.

Here's a bit more from Mr Bonner

Would they be keen tofollow Derry City into the Eircom League, if the appeal fails?

I'm heartened every time we are linked with the signing of a six foot plus player. By and large the SPL is no place for small players - the bigger and more aggresive they are, the better. Sad really but Scottish football places less emphasis upon skill than physique as has been proven time and time again.

Players I´d like to see in the hoops

Republic of Ireland squad - goalkeepers: Colin Doyle (Birmingham), Dean Kiely (West Brom), Joe Murphy (Scunthorpe).

Defenders: Alex Bruce (Ipswich), Damien Delaney (QPR), Richard Dunne (Manchester City), Kevin Foley (Wolves), Stephen Kelly (Birmingham), Paul McShane (Sunderland), Darren O'Dea (Celtic), John O'Shea (Man Utd).

Midfielders: Damien Duff (Newcastle), Owen Garvan (Ipswich), Wes Hoolahan (Blackpool), Stephen Hunt (Reading), Aiden McGeady (Celtic), Stephen MacPhail (Cardiff), Liam Miller (Sunderland), Darren Potter (Wolves), Andy Reid (Sunderland), Martin Rowlands (QPR), Sean Scannell (Crystal Palace), Glenn Whelan (Stoke).

Strikers: Kevin Doyle (Reading), Robbie Keane (Tottenham), Andy Keogh (Wolves), Shane Long (Reading), Daryl Murphy (Sunderland).

Hi Bhoys,

Football Trivia question there are 7 players that have scored against Man Utd in the premiership and in the champions league. Name them very tough question by the way.

First encounter with the FOD 7.35 am. Manchester 08 on his back.

Wished him the best of luck..... or something like that;-)

Amazed at the amount of butchers aprons about!

Awe_Naw

Sweden v Greece would be a good game to get to. Poland v Croatia could also be exciting if we sign Ogi.

With Ireland not there I have the luxury of supporting all the teams with a Celtic interest but it would be great to see Henrik lift the trophy.

When Henrik scores he will have scored in 6 major tournaments (WC and Euros). Does anyone know if this will be a record?

Saw Evander's display last night. Thought he was CLASS. Mind you, I've always thought so. He has a football brain.

Gordon @ 8.09,
I was at the Sparta game. I remember that that was the first time numbers were worn on shorts by anybody. I didn't remember it as being in May. I thought it was a preseason friendly. Just shows what tricks memory plays. It was certainly a lovely day.

Much like today, in fact, as was THAT cup final. I was in the old enclosure for that one. Thanks for the memories of great days.

I thought I'd add to WG's liturgical contributions with these words, which I woke up to:
The sun is shining brightly
The trees are clothed with GREEN, (which indeed they are)
The beauteous bloom of flowers
On every side is seen.
The trees are gold and yellow
And all the world is gay
It is the month of Mary
The lovely month of May.

It must be 40+ years since I sang that out lustily in primary school, so my apologies if there are mistakes. Mind you, it can't hold a candle to Bring flowers of the rarest.

Antrimbhoy :- Personally I no longer do it and haven't since being informed, I have let a few folk know about it but the answer from most seems to be that as they don't do it with that association in mind then it's OK. With this prevailing attitude I can't see supporters clubs or Rangers doing anything to stop it.
I think and it's only my opinion that any effort from the club would be wasted as many folk would say that they (though not enough of them) have listened to the club over songs like the Billy Boys (bloody hell I've been on this site too long I just spelt that with an h before my spell checker caught it) and offensive chants and add ons and would probably resist any attempts to proscribe it as they see it as harmless taunting song.

I hear sperm bnaks in Glasgow are expecting shortages in stocks very soon. This is bacause all the w@nkers are currently in Manchester...

Rocco,

crespo ?

Edward

You said:

"the answer from most seems to be that as they don't do it with that association in mind then it's OK."

Do you think this is the same reason why certain fans give a Nazi/Red Hand Salute? Just out of interest, what does the Red Hand Salute signify?

I bet the nerves are getting to you now.

Another central midfielder! Strachan must have bought more central midfielders than all other positions put together...let's hope this guy slots in with AN Other and we finally get a settled central midfield partnership.

Left back has to be top priority now (although can someone tell me if I'm correct in thinking we were told Doumbe could play left or right back?)

Please please please

Lets have the huns losing by a couple of not just dodgy but unexplainable decisions tonight from Ref..Then lets hear if Daryl and Keith Jackson and the rest return to the "cheating referee"
stuff they came out with when Italy beat Scotland. Personally thought it was a shocking decision to give free kick that lead to the winner but funnily enough thought that goal he knocked off in first half for Italy was equally bad

But Apparrently he was not a referee having a bad day at the office

They had no problems calling him a cheat...

Rocco,

Henry - a few for Arsenal and 1 for Monaco.

Ed - to be fair, I think it's a real chicken/egg situation with this one, and I did as much looking into it as I could when I first heard of the association. I couldn't find anything that conclusively proved that the fans or copying the act of the killers or vice verse. Either way it's now has that horrible association.

However, if a person or persons were to commit a horrid murder while singing YNWA, I think you'd be hard pressed to persuade us to stop singing it.

PS If anybody can conclusively prove that the fans are copying the killers I'd be happy to re-asses my opinion.

I have pointed out to them that there is no sch thing as a red hand salute and that it has never been used in Ulster this is backed up by Rangers fans from the N. Ireland supporters clubs. Some folk just don't want to be educated.

You are correct the nerves are starting to shred and I'm bouncing between being convinced we will win and convinced we will lose. The nearest I can think of to it is in games against Celtic but much more intense.

Bromley Bhoy - Failte on St Vincent Street is probably your best bet. The city centre will be a pretty gruesome place to be tonight regardless of the result so take care.

Today is absolute torture. I can't stand having to watch news reporters sit in front of choruses of the Billy Boys and the very high brow "The famine is over why don't you go home" while pretending that these are all nice kind-hearted people who have made the jolly sojourn down to Manchester for a quite spiffing celebration of the beautiful game. Many of them are decent folk who can somehow switch off to the We Arra People ethos but a sizeable percentage of the currant buns I've met are painfully obnoxious people. I hope they get absolutely annihilated in Manchester tonight by a record score and all their players are too knackered to turn up at Fir Park on Saturday.

I keep trying to make my peace with the idea of them winning it so I can sleep easier at nights but it is not working. St Petersburg simply have to win tonight or I will have to avoid all print and broadcast media in this country for years to come.

To quote a cult 90s film......."Find a happy place. Find a happy place."

I always feel more nervous for evening games as there is the whole day of waiting around. I much prefer 12:30 games on a saturday or sunday as I get up about 11 and don't have to panic so much.

AW NO

NONE OF THEM

Yakubu

While Red Hand's are on the agenda, pretty much anybody from Ulster could use it ie Celtic supporters clubs from Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan as well as Norn Ireland.

Very, very old symbol, the bloody hand of Finn McCool I think who chopped it off and threw it to the Antrim coast when he was racing a Scottish giant across the sea, so he won the race and hence the symbol was adopted.

Not a political symbol, just an old one. Depends who is holding it and why I suppose.

STANDING UP..reclaiming old things, have I not got anything better to do

The bloke that asked me this question is adament the 7 players that he gave me are correct I would imagine both Berb and Ballack scored for Bayer Leverkusen in the Champs League against Man U.

The M8 was helluva busy this morning considering 100,000 of our good citizens are in Manchester at the moment.

OK... 100,000 of our citizens.

Scott Brown, P Hartley, E Sno, T Gravesen, M Donati, S Nakamura, K Mizuno, S Ferry, A McGeady, B Robson

That’s 10 midfielders,

If we are in the market for another one - how many do we need?

Presumably some will be leaving - who and how many though?

Does this mean that Gordon is staying?

Do we intend to rain on the huns parade for the rest of the day?

Gordon Smith and George Burley were on the Rangers TV last night……..

Sorry ghuys - couldn't resist it - bit like watching a car crash

Anyway they both would fail Pauls Caesar test by warmly endorsing all things fod.

For the good of Scottish football of course.

AntrimBhoy :- I never defend sectarian songs however I would like to point out that a large majority of the Rangers support do not associate the bouncy with the tragic murder in Belfast. I was unaware of the connection myself until it was pointed out to me on here during an exchange of jokes with Noel90.

Mort: The laughable thing about the Red Hand of Ulster is that it is the symbol/family crest of the O Neill Clan (the famous Irish High Kings) and a very Gaelic/Irish/Catholic symbol. It is used by the Tyrone Gaelic team on their jersey and is on the correct Ulster flag. It is in no way a protestant/unionist symbol at all.

inkybhoy

It wasn't Finn McCool who threw the red hand but O'Neill.

Many years ago two men wanted to be King of Ulster. But both could not be King. One man was Dermot. He was tall and thin. He was a good runner and a very good horseman. The other man was O’Neill. He was short and quite fat. He had a big black beard. He was a very good fighter. He too was a very good horseman. For years they argued and argued about who was the best man to be King of Ulster.

The High King of Ireland called Dermot and O’Neill to his castle tto bring about an end to the dispute and he arranged for a horse race and the winner will become King of Ulster.

So the two men agreed to have a horse race to decide who was going to be the King of Ulster and the winner will be the first man to get to the river and put his hand on the land of Ulster.

Early the next morning the two men got ready for the horse race.

Dermot had a big grey horse and O’Neill had a big black horse with white spots. The two horses and their riders raced away from the High King’s castle. The horses ran and ran, with their riders on their backs. Dermot on his grey horse ran fast, and he shouted to make his horse run even faster. O’Neill and his horse ran fast, but in silence.

At Drogheda O’Neill was leading on his black and white horse.

At Dundalk Dermot was in the lead on his grey horse.

The two riders and their horses still had the hardest part of the race. They had to cross the high mountains into Ulster!

The two horsemen were equal as they started to climb the mountain road.

Both horses were snorting and panting as they raced up and up.

At last they reached the top of the hill. There was a narrow gap between two cliffs, with room for only one horse and rider. Dermot reached it first. He was in the lead.

Dermot’s horse was tired - but so was O’Neill’s. The race was very close.

Dermot was in front!

Then they raced down the hill. A minute later O’Neill was in front!

Every minute there was a change and a chance for the other horseman.

The horsemen were not racing for a silver cup or any prize like that. No, they were racing to decide who was going to be King of Ulster! Both riders thought about the great prize they could win. They both shouted loudly to make their horses run even faster.

Then the horsemen saw the river!

The last part of race was on!

The two men and their horses ran faster than ever!

Faster and faster raced the horses!

The two riders shouted louder and louder as they got closer and closer to the deep river!

Dermot got to the river first. He did not stop on the bank. His horse snorted loudly as it jumped into the cold water. The panting horse and its rider started swimming. The water in the river was cold and deep.

O’Neill had a different idea. He stopped and got off his horse. He stood on the bank of the river. He watched Dermot and his horse as they swam across the deep river. Had he lost the test?

O'Neill took his sword in his left hand. He closed his eyes. He lifted his sword high above his head.

He had one chance left!

He held out his right hand and with one great blow he cut it off! The bleeding hand fell to the ground. There was blood everywhere!

Then O’Neill bent down and lifted his bleeding hand high in the air. He ran to the bank and threw it across the river.

The bleeding hand flew through the air.

Which was going to arrive first - the bleeding hand or the panting horse with its tired rider?

Some of O'Neill’s men were standing on the Ulster side.

‘‘We win! We win!’’ they shouted as the bleeding hand of their leader landed on the bank of the river. ‘‘We win! Ulster is ours!’’

And so the story finishes.

Dermot and his men went to live far away in the west.

O'Neill became King of Ulster.

The flag of Ulster still has the Red Hand of O'Neill.

Interesting football article on the use of statistics if you're looking for something to take your mind off tonight

Ballack and Berbatov have not scored against MAN in the CL.

so I have two only Yakubu and Gallas ?

Being a Tyrone man I regularly wear the Red Hand proudly on my chest.

Apologies Ballack is right but berby ???

Rocco

Is it Wes Brown? He scored an OG against Man U for Valencia but I'm not sure if he ever scored an OG in the premiership but its a fair bet.

Looks like Alex Salmond and his SNP buddies have missed a trick - today would've been the day for a referendum on independence!

All the unionists are in Manchester!

Listening to Johnny Walker on Radio 2 this morning he said several times that " there are delays on the M6 south bound due to animals on the motorway " .........thought it was hilarious ..do you think it was a wind up ..

Anyone seen the TV listings for tonight?

Why oh why are the Horribles on before the watershed?

Anyways, I shall be tucked away in the shed with a couple of bottles of the Good Doctor, my wind-up gramophone [ Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony ], and my slightly foxed copy of 'Mon grande tristesse sans Harald' by CBruni. It's in French but the photos are therapeutic.
