Lennoxtown hampered Celtic

| | Comments (714)

This season started well; we were comfortably ahead and short odds for the league before trouble arrived, but the dip in form coincided with the complete change in training environment and routine when Celtic moved to Lennoxtown in October,

Before they moved to Lennoxtown Celtic had played nine league games, winning seven, with solid European performances against Milan, Spartak Moscow (twice) and a single reversal in Donetsk.

After Celtic started training in the new Lennoxtown facilities results changed.  They won only five of their next ten league games; injuries also started to mount up after all that new gym kit was brought into use.  At the time I remember Gordon Strachan telling us about the extra training the players were putting in on their own; this sounded like it could only be a good thing, but extra training means a change in preparation, rest and nutrition would also be needed.

Measuring this change and getting it right for a couple of players would be possible, but if a large portion of the squad all changed their routine at the same time, it would be impossible for the support staff to monitor and correct any imbalances.

With hindsight this doesn't seem surprising; new training kit, new routines to make use of all those facilities and then we get injuries.  And then we drop points.

This is a very interesting point, have you been able to discuss any of these thoughts with anyone within Celtic?

First post of the new era, better make it a good one :)

Interesting point but surely something that was considered in advance, we weren't the first football club to move to a new facility surely?

Reminds me of the criticism Phil Mickelson received when he switched equipment to Calloway for the 2004 Ryder Cup. In reality, he'd hit more balls with the new sticks than with his old set but it was presented as though he'd just picked the new clubs up.

Martin 42 hi there amigo! Just caught by the "new article posted" cut-off but am far too modest to go for a podium -;

Thanks for the enquiry. Dad's doing amazingly well, thanks, and it's wonderful to be able to report that all his old pals from the Renfrew bus saw him to Paradise for the Aberdeen game. We never thought we'd see that, back in Jan/Feb. Deo gratias.

Name-change? Was trying to post the other day just when P67 was switching to the new system so decided to change moniker too!

Am hoping to watch Motherwell game from a pub in Rome, address kindly supplied by 3 excellent CQN-ers yesterday. Heading off fairly soon.

maybe slightly clutching at staws with this one?

i'm as positive as anyone on our recent performances and results but we let a very limited rangers team pull ahead of this season and that's a big disappointment (to be discussed when season is finished as all my energy is going into supporting the team until it's all over)...but when the reasons for our slump are discussed I won't be accepting great new training facilities as an excuse...

Hail Hail!

Interesting theory Paul67. Have we not the sports scientists there whose job it should be to do that monitoring?

Well, things are improving. When I pressed the comments column, the space for writing appeared, albeit briefly and then disappeared off into cyberspace. Anyone know why this is happening to poor little old me...

Hello Paul, Congratulations on the new site. I'm a long time lurker, but have never posted before. I enjoy reading most posts left here and makes me feel I'm in good company. Not Scottish or Irish, but fell in love with the club during the lean 90's when I lived in Scotland. I had a season ticket for 3 years which ended on beating St Johnstone to stop 10 in a row. What a day it was. For some reason my lasting memory seems to be jumping to celebrate Brattbak's goal and landing on a couple of sachets of tomato ketchup which exploded onto the otherwise immaculately white shirt the fella in front of me was wearing. I don't think he cared, but if he's a poster here, I would like to apologize. Anyway, I now live in the Netherlands and this excellent site helps me keep in touch, so thank you for that. Cheers and hail hail to 3 in a row.

Paul have we any plans for Barrowfield?

Perhaps we could let it run wild as pasture, graze cattle on it, give it to the local neds to BMX and scramble it into ruts, flood it twice per week, cut haphazard sections with a mower blade set to zero.
That way we will be giving something back but more importantly will also have a perfect surface on which to ready ourselves for Fir Park.

Paul,

I think I need a little more convincing than the weakish thread of your article. ( was this lying in wait in case we lost to rankers) No excuses.

How many of the injuries were sustained in training as opposed to matches?

Of the players undertaking their own training how many got injured?

Yes players can do additional training but this should still be monitored by our full time fitness guru's and additional training should only be down with fitness staff's approval.

As a club we should always have a big enough squad to cover injuries, injuries be a statement not an excuse, with the exception of having to play 7/8 players at right back -a one off.

mcgraininspain am just finishing an excellent read, Three Cups of Tea about a remarkable, and somewhat eccentric American mountaineeer, Greg Mortenson, who found his life's work in central Asia, setting up schools for underprivileged tribal kids. Not at all mawkish, as that description might suggest, but compelling reading.

CQN Library corner Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ....

Paul I have also heard that not only is it affecting injuries and morale, none of the players seemingly enjoy the remoteness its also affecting the superstore takings at Celtic Park. Which are down on last year due to people not going up to see the players return from Training

Lubo1977, it appears incongruous but the move coincided exactly with the change in fortunes.

Forget the Lennoxtown part of it for a moment, if someone told you that Celtic changed their training regime (which they did) and shortly afterwards were hit by injuries and dropped points it makes more sense.

Mcgrainin, we do.

Welcome Gilmat and thank you.

Onlooker, don’t know.

playfusbal4dguilders, injuries don’t need to happen in training to be as a result of training.

Paul67 - Does this mean we would have gotten away with winning the title at a canter if it hadn't been for that meddling new gym kit at Lennoxtown?

Paul 67,
Come on now, no need to prepare for failure, as my old teacher used to tell me when I hadnae done ma homework... "excuses, excuses, excuses"

Wishaw tim,

Could'nt Give a donkey's Buck.

Does seem like a dubious premise. Little more than coincidence, I would say (they do happen).

If I recall correctly - and sometimes I wish I couldn't - the "single reversal in Donetsk" was an absolute horsing! If we then took an immediate dip, I would guess the travel and massive dent to confidence following that match was more of an issue than improved training facilities.

Paul - wonderful new site.

But it's 1st May today, not 1st April.

Paul 67,

Lennoxtown??? No i think it was just bad decisions or judgments by our manager particular in selections that have cost us points.

If you happen to see WGS before the game on Saturday. Any chance of slipping in that the majority of fans think that O'Dea should be in instead of Mick and dingy whatever he might be saying. Courageous captain crap does not wear with me. Playing through the pain barrier etc..

It is bad enough when he is fit but come on, now is not a time to take uneccessary risks with injured players when there are better players waiting in the wings.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter as there will be no need for excuses or post season enquiries for the simple reason that......WE'RE GONNA WIN THE LEAGUE!

Hail Hail to all!

After years of passive enjoyment I'm tentatively venturing from the 'Lurkery' to the 'Blogery' for the first time. Be gentle nurse!

I must say I've very much enjoyed reading the various match summaries, heated tactical debate and even the inane disjointed ramblings on this site for a long time now. Special mention for Paul who enlightens, Edward who informs and Kojo who.........well...........I'm not quite sure but you get my meaning. And thanks to all you other regular contributers for making www.celticquicknews.co.uk the most coveted of hyperlinks.

Won't it be wonderful to see our Bhoys of '98 grace the CP turf again? Really looking forward to that one. I'll bet The King looks majestic as always. Although does anyone else wish Wim had scouted the French Championnat one year before Dr Jo made the call to Duisburg? the silky Slovak would provided the icing on the cake on 25th May. (Maybe the fact he signed in '98 would justify a seat on the bench....?) Nevertheless, I'll be on to the ticket office for my brief later today.

Onto Paul's point: I never considered that this change in environment might be at the route cause. You could be right. I think more importantly though we are facing an opponent this season who have strong self belief. The same belief seemed to be missing in our squad mid season. Thankfully it has returned, while I see signs of THEIR belief wavering.

When Mick lifts that trophy this year it will taste extra sweet.

Keep believing Bhoys! Blue Bottles are crashing all over my office. And it's an aural symphony.

what about having a couple of ex. players milling about.
i mean must be better than driving a taxi or standing about a pub or indeed running a sandwich shop.

This article puts me in mind, more than anything, of the creative happenstances Reggie Perrin used to provide to his secretary Joan when he turned up late at the office ("14 minutes late; juggernaut jacknifed at Gerrard's Cross".)

Mcgraininspain I would recommend "the rum diary" by hunter s thompson and “the wind up bird chronicle" by Haruki Murakami.

A reasonable point but I'd argue that our reaction to the (ultimately irrelevant) horsing was to put the reigning European Champions to the sword!

A wee reality check here on our confused neighbours.

Tonight - they could very well do enough to reach the UEFA cup final.

They have got to this point in this competition on their AWAY performances. They play better away from home and they do it well.

So lets not get too carried away in assuming Fiorentina will just turn up and send them packing and i would prepare for a very long Friday and stay away from the telly and radio tomorrow if they make it.

Forza Viola

So is this just a short term disruption?’ Teething problems and all that.
In hindsight it would have probably been a better idea to wait until pre-season to up sticks but then we'd no doubt get criticism for having our multi million training complex going unused.

Hope we don't end up going down the 'Murray Park' road, which cost a bomb and is responsible for more injuries than Myra Hindley.

Only half decent 'product' to come out of there now kicks Premiership players.

Keep The Faith.

Paul67, I see your point but I do not think we should go down the road of excuses. Firstly 3-in-a-row will be ours. Secondly, if by some freak chance that Rankers manage to fall over that line then excuses should be left firmly in the bin.

Re your post the other thread vis-à-vis Arthur Boruc – I couldn’t agree more. Your follow up post vis-à-vis it is foolish to believe that others, not of our persuasion, do not consider themselves superior. Without meaning to demographically generalise – I couldn’t disagree more.

There are those, and they are many, and they do not all live in the West of Scotland, who believe Catholics to be inferior in many ways. I won’t desecrate this blog to use their language to describe us but it is Neanderthal and it is obscene, and it is most definitely supremacist.

As well as St Joe The Worker (the non-patron of Arthur Lee) we should invoke the intercession of St John The Baptist, Patron of Florence.

Paul67 – and his many helpers! Well done with the new look. Seems to have flushed out many lurkers and rare posters like myself.
Your work is much appreciated.
Some excellent views on this site, obviously don’t agree with all of them but that’s what it’s all about. Debate is healthy and long may it continue.

On to team matters – good to see the fight displayed by one and all over the past few weeks. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure if it will be enough but the effort shown should give us something to build on. We all know players are needed for certain positions but I’m hoping no matter what the result at the end of the season, the manager gets the backing he deserves to bring those players in.

Anyone in the Fir Park area? How’s the weather looking?

Whooshman

interesting article paul , although i still think we took the threat from rangers a little too lightly in the summer transfer window

but, as you have said in the past paul , it's the long term transfer/ spending strategy that's important, and not being reactive to a one-off big spend from them

unfortunately for WGS, he will take the brunt of critisicm for this strategy if it doesn't bear fruit, not the board or peter lawell

In the past, strachan spoke of team 1, team 2, and promised great things of team 3, IMHO his hands were tied and he couldn'nt get his team 3 in the summer

where are we in the whole team 3 ethos,or is this forgotten about ?

p.s. great post zybzek

Hail Hail to all at CQN,

Thanks to my new laptop and a broadband account (at last!) a long time lurker is now able to join in.

Although the club badly needed modern training facilities I can't help but feel that the move to Lennox Castle will ultimately detach the players from the fans in the longer term. I have no idea how the players themselves regarded the crowds of fans hanging about he stadium waiting for autographs, pictures, etc but you could tell from watching that it meant a lot to the fans to meet the guys they put so much effort into supporting. The move to the new facility has removed that contact with the people who pay their wages.

Although the move and the dip in form were probably no coincidence it should be remembered that form is temporary and can be recovered. What won't be recovered is the frequency of the contact between the players and the fans either directly or indirectly and the value this had in making Celtic such an important part of all our lives.

Regards,

Ernest

Welcome back SS, Not sure if you are being serious or just tring to get a rise out of supporters.

As ever a wee word from Sean brightens all our days.

DBBIA and Subterranean, you will recall that before the Aberdeen game we raised the possibility of a few drinks AFTER the Hibs game. You then showed absolutely no sympathy for the fact that I was possibly going to have to go to Saudi Arabia. Now that I have got out of that visit (and a subsequent conference call scheduled for Sunday 11th 12.30 Celtic Park time) it would be great if we could arrange a CQN post match meeting, lack of sympathy notwithstanding. If any CQNers are up for it, let me know since this will determine how late I book my flight in the evening back down to Foreingerlund.

I feel the dip in form etc is coincidence more than anything. It galls me the points we lost in that period but not as much as losing to Motherwell and Aberdeen who both deserved nothing and dropping a point to Dundee Utd whom that night we should have pumped.

It's all in our hands, other than stopping 10IAR this will be the sweetest title since Love St in 86

1st time poster BTW

Paul67

I hadn't thought about it along those lines and it does make sense although I just think we are in this position because we didn't perform in December or March. Lennoxtown may have been a contributing factor but not IMHO the only one.

Also I believe that we will win this league, I don't see r****** winning all their games, in fact I envisage 2 defeats for them before the end of the season in the SPL.

I would also like to wish the team all the best for the trip to Motherwell as it will be a hard game. In fact all our up comming games must be treated like cup finals. They are every bit as important as the wins aginst Scotlands Shame. I hope the Bhoys are feeling good after Sunday and that it shows on Saturday.

we are at the business end of the season and it is results that count

Thismancraig: My point is that you can't just slip in the Shaktar game as a "single reverse" to then claim that a slump started immediately afterwards due to the training facilities.

Probably our worst performance of the season came before we changed. Arguably our best result in 40 years came around a couple of weeks after moving so we might as well put that win down to that.

Also, I just looked back through the fixtures and the ninth league game referred to before the move was the 2-1 win over Gretna, which was also one of our poorest performances and we had lost 3-2 to Hibs two weeks before that, prompting much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

As it looks like Artur will be building his legend elsewhere, how about a cash plus Van Der Saar deal? Artur like Man U, they are rumoured to like him - he is very Schmeichel-esque - Edwin VdS wouldn't fancy reserve football and it's unlikely that Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool would sign him.

CELTIC and Rangers have been handed an added £12 million incentive to win the SPL - the chance to go straight into the Champions League group stages. The all-British final between Manchester United and Chelsea in Moscow next month means the Scottish champions should automatically get into next year's competition. The only scenario which could see them have to go through qualifying is if Arsenal manage to finish in second place in the Barclays Premier League.

The Gunners are four points behind United and Chelsea in third place in the table with two games remaining in the 2007/08 season.Celtic qualified for the Champions League automatically back in 2006 after Barcelona won and went on to reach the last 16 for the first time in their history. The side which finishes second in the SPL will have to go through qualifying.

And that was well wide from Sephiroth!

Interesting comment. I think there are parallels to be drawn in other areas of work. For example, if you move office, but are effectively doing the same job, how does that affect performance? Improve it or otherwise? In our case, be it coincidence or not, we certainly did hit the skidders to an extent, at the same time.

If this was the case though, it is where leadership becomes important in order to smooth the transition whilst performance is maintained. It's an open question which has been debated on CQN for a while, that is about the leaders in the playing squad and management staff.

The Glasgow rumour mill was feverish when GS did come in to Celtic with his double training sessions, and if you would believe the rumours it led to the demise of Sutton, Thomson and Agathe.

The previous posts on that St Johnstone game made me shiver. I think still have deep psychological issues with the rollercoaster of that season! One of the great nights out at Heraghtys and the Huddle in the Crossroads.

Oh, and by the way, not that I like to in anyway copy any of TFOD's musings, (and forgive me for the bad taste everyone), but:

Interesting article.

Iv'e went out to Lennoxtown three time, before it was opened officially, and I thought it was a great inovation to get the players out into the countryside, fresh air and all that health thing. And it is a lovely place to do your training.

But for me theres a downside, and a couple of posters have posted comments about it.

I went to Celtic Park every other week, and Being a diehard Supporter,I was interested in all the comings and goings, that went on, in the daily running of the Football Club.

There were always Players coming and going, and it was easy to get your Photograph taken with your Favourite player, or an autograph book signed.

I went to Celtic Park a couple of weeks ago,to uplift tickets, and it was like a morgue, theres no atmosphere at Celtic Park these days,There were always Supporters thronging about,I wish those days would return.

Players love the adolation of the masses, you could see it in their smiling faces when the kids chased them to get their photo's taken, players will hardly ever see the punters, other than before a match now.

They should be made to make an appearance at Celtic Park, they could do it in rotation, three or four players should be at Celtic Park every day after training,to keep their supporters happy, surely they can forego their round of golf, or game of snooker, for the benefit of the fans.

Are you worried that we may end up spending more money on Lennoxtown in reaction to the weather of the winter months!!

Hey Old Tim,
How are you doing. You should send that to Peter Lawwell at CP.
Its a perfectly heartfelt and reasonable request. You never know, they might just take you up on it.

McGraininSpain.
Ive just read Pompeii by Robert Harris. Thriller set in the two days prior and post the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Fantastic read. Reading 'An unsung hero' about Tom Crean the Irishman who accompanied many a seasoned artic explorer. Highly recommend.

Oldtim67, how are you doing? Don't know what your plans are after the Hibs game. It would be good to meet up if you are around.

Grrr!

If I want to log in to comment from my work, I have to pretend I have forgotten my password. I then receive an email with a temporary password, with which I have to log on (and then reset my password to my usual one), before I can comment.

When I try to log on normally I simply get returned to the same page (without the comment entry box) over and over.

Obviously, in order to post this, I have done the forgotten password routine...

Any ideas anyone?

There are two sorts of people on here. Those who are in cliques and those who would like to be.I like having a foot in both camps myself.

A plumber, an engineer, a doctor, a lawyer, a navvy.
Whatever the profession, the boy who supported Celtic becomes the old man who, even more so, still loves & supports Celtic.
With only ONE exception....Those who sell their limited skills to the gutter press.
Sean South ended his self imposed silence to have his customary dig at the club he purports to support, & at the vehicle that Paul has tirelessly striven to build, which gives us all so much pleasure & information.
He has taken his lead from the McNees, the Keevins, the Charlie Nicks, & a whole host of like-minded Uncle Tims who feel the need to attack that which they once loved.
Do they think this makes them appear to be even-handed, independent minded & respected pundits ?
I would like to think that was the case, but I suspect that their motive is much more base. It is what made Judas sell out.
