Tannadice beckons 27 years to the day after Tommy Burns' league winner there

| | Comments (528)

We're told God works in mysterious ways.  When the final day of the league programme was moved to 22 May and we were told we would visit Tannadice, it didn't seem a particularly significant date or venue, but it is.

One of my favourite memories of Tommy Burn was when he scored that great goal the day Celtic won the league at Tannadice, on 22 April 1981, 27 years and one month before Thursday's date.

It was a special day to be a Celtic fan.  Tommy's was a great goal, beating a couple of players before rifling a shot into the postage stamp corner, Frank McGarvey and Murdo McLeod got the others.

After the game the players carried Danny McGrain shoulder-high towards us; it was a team very much in communion with its fans.

It would be an incredible honour for this Celtic team to win the league at the same venue Tommy scored that goal all those years ago, just a week after his death.

Perhaps providence provided this opportunity for Celtic, or perhaps we have been given an opportunity to follow a man of faith one more time.

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me
Love was out to get me
That's the way it seemed
Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried
I thought love was more or less a giving thing
Seems the more I gave, the less I got
What's the use in trying
All you get is pain
When I needed sunshine, I got rain
Then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her if I tried

HELP

I wonder if anyone can tell me of a pub in Vilamoura Portugal that has Setanta??

We have been given the opportunity to give him a sending off he deserves.

We MUST take it.

Bugger it... turn it up more I’m up for the night.

The Rare Old Times

Am I imagining things or did anyone notice that pompy fan with the stupid wig & waistcoast wearing a rangers scarf round his wrist?

stg

doesn't polstat have coverage in Europe?

Paul,

Football has a strange way of things working out at times. Winning it at Tannadice again would have a lovely symmetry about it, as would our current redheaded midfielder scoring the league clinching goal.

Come on bhoys, win it for Tommy!

Anyone,

what youth team is playing in Germany ?

When and where ?

any help much appreciated

Don't know if this is true or not, but hearing the cardigan has been rushed to hospital

Hi - Another first timer! Should be out doing the garden but you might be interested in this story from a Rangers fan about Wednesday night.
We have a small community on www.iii.co.uk (basically a financial site and Celtic is a publicly quoted share). It's nice and we nearly feel we know each other as we're only about 20 strong. The Rangers fan in question is a bit of a wind up merchant (unlike Ed!) but I'm sure he would admit it himself. Anyway -

"Hello all, as you may recall I was in Manchester and can give you a 1st hand insight.

Firstly travelling to the city was a fantastic experience, a Blue Tsunami was how a banner on one of the roads over the M74 put it, it was quite prophetic as it turned out its just that the liquid wasnt blue.

I was travelling as a guest of a supplier, we were based in Altringham just outside Manchester and buses were laid on into the city direct to the stadium. We had arrived at mid-day and the coach was due to take everyone to the stadium about 17:30.
Myself and a couple of others decided we would meet them there as we wanted to go into the city to soak up the atmosphere.

We arrived in the center of Manchester at about 14:00 and went 1st to Albert Square. Even at this early stage the amount of drunkeness and loutish behavious shocked me, there was no control (either from the fans or the stewards and police) there was no one ensuring that too many fans didnt get into the area. It was meant to hold about 8000 fans but even then there was about 12-15k fans there, it ended up about 20k later on.

We left pretty rapidly and went to piccadilly, it was a shambles, it was like a medieval scene with the place in uproar, thousands of fans, howling drunk, howling at each other and at anything that moved. There were entire families there in various stages of drunkeness and absolutely no coherent police or stewarding presence. Even at this stage (around 16:00) it was clearly dangerous and the atmosphere was rancid, something was going to kick off.

I managed to get our group into the relative safety of the Thistle Hotel nearby as a friend was a guest there. We had 2 bottles of beer each, the only alcoholic drink I had all night, not because I have a problem with alcohol but only because I didnt take the contents of an off license with me or was not willing to queue outside a Tesco's/Spar for hours for more booze.

We left for the ground at about 17:30, outside it was a sea of urine, empty cans, drunks (of all shapes and sizes) either staggering about or slumped in doorways. Disgraceful behaviour everywhere by thousands of idiots (I cant type what I really think here) which is just frankly shameful and turned what should have been a momentous occasion to be remembered for a long time by all Rangers supporters into a night of shame.

You may have seen the match so I wont say a word about that, draw your own conclusions, I enjoyed the occasion and experience inside the stadium.

There were a few areas where the Manchester authorities might have done things better, there were a couple of instances, particularly what went on at Piccadilly Station that was downright dangerous and could easily have led to the loss of many lives, thankfully it didnt.

However I have never been so ashamed of some of the people who profess to be supporters of the club I love, I dont know which rock they live under or where it is but I do know they shouldnt be allowed out, they are an absolute disgrace. Even the following day these mindless idiots were getting out of vans/cars at motorway service stations and rather than walk to the facilities just urinating in the car park.

I am so angry (you may have noticed), these people can barely be described as part of the human race, there needs to be a seperate section of the law to deal with them, they are just filth. There is lots of additional detail I could go into, its all just the same, about 1,000 people have disgraced Rangers, Glasgow and Scotland (Sorry, but that means you too even though you, quite rightly, hate and despise them).

So, when I defended Rangers fans in the past here and if you were talking about the human debris I met on Wednesday, then I was wrong and I apologise.

I wont and dont need to apologise for the vast majority of good, decent ordinary people who follow my team, they just wanted to enjoy the occasion unlike the other phuqwits I have described here. "

Paul, it was APRIL 22, my 18th birthday

no probs with the 1-1 thing

jst heard on Radio Snide! That Tommy's funeral is gonna be live on TV!

Hang the dj,

Pompeys colours are red, white and blue also.

Paul67,

Do you realise that it 359 minutes since St Mirren have conceded a goal? That's 4 games.

Anyone fancy a scoreless draw on Monday night?

I have said for weeks I felt Love Street was where it would all come crashing down. Listening to the Dary's interview today he sounds resigned to defeat and as we have said before he is giving his players excuses for defeat. Terrible man management.

As someone said on the previous thread Ferguson looks like a man playing on empty and injury, he may be looking at an early end to his career with the amount of games he is playing injured. Not good.

Can I ask when the funeral is?

Gordon J from your earlier post at 3.17PM Actually Waterloo, Ontario but good on you for recognizing the Toronto Airport code.

What a wonderful end to a very emotional week, like everyone else on here I have felt the whole gamut of emotions- furious (Murray, Smith, Peat & McCurry), immensly proud (Hibs game), bricking it (UEFA Cup), anger & disgust (Scotland's Shame), deep sadness (Tommy). Now today joy, sheer joy!

Couldn't face the game today so played golf instead, what a feeling when I switched on my phone.

I have a good feeling about Monday night, a win for St Mirren will lift them above ICT- and the financial benefit that brings to the club. This will be important to them. Allied with the cancelling of their holidays and Cuellar's absence and having a pop at a team who were European finalists they have plenty of incentive, the Huns are a busted flush.

looks like one of the key people involved in the riots on Manchester was not a Rangers fan and English

Sorry but you are 1 month out I think you will find that we won the league on Wed 22nd April 1981 it was the first time I had seen us win the league away from Celtic Park. I started my first ever job as a 16 year old the following day with a hangover. We also had a flurry of snow that night.

Been lurking around the site for a long time, posted on a rare few occasions and just wanted to congratulate you on a magnificent forum for all things Celtic, a communion of brothers and sisters with a common (most of the time) cause.
If Tommy Burns, whom I knew personnaly, could see the tributes on here and other places he would be humbled beyond belief, all on here have done us proud.
I mentioned to a friend the other day the maybe Tam left us before the end of the season so that he could have a word with the Big Man on our behalf, seems the word has worked, however as Tam would say "we've no won anything yet"
I believe Thursday will be a very, very special day.
Sitting here alone with a VERY big grin on my face, the sun is shining again.

Cheers WG.

Pete the Beat. Congratulations to you for having the honesty and decency to explain the facts to the world, unlike the Scottish Media who continue to sweep this garbage under the rug. As a Scot,I was embarrased Wednesday night when, during a meeting with colleagues from the US, up popped the scenes from Manchester on CNN. You can only imagine my response to these guys as they all believe soccer ( football ) is a game followed by hooligans. Tough to defend when you see mobs of hundreds charging police.

Having lived through 2003 and having been at Motherwell in 2005 I'm taking nothing for granted.

Remember tho' in 2005 Hibs needed a draw to secure a Euro spot and the last 10 mins or so was "after you, Claude"

If there is any justice / kismet in this world then we WILL prevail.

I'd also like to simply say that Gordon Strachan has gone up in my estimation immeasurably this week and win or lose the league now I want him to stay.

Any question over whether hes an accepted and respected member of the Celtic family is surely behind us now.

I cant recall a week when I have been more grateful and thankful to have had the good fortune to be born and raised in that family.

Paul -- if you dont mind me saying so - this site has added another dimension to supporting this club and is , for me , as much now a part of the shared Celtic experience as anything short of going to the games.

Pete the beat. got it, right after I hit submit. Sorry for the confusion and no offence taken I hope?

Providence indeed, here's hoping for a similar outcome on Thursday. I just can't see Rangers winning at Pittodrie whatever the situation is - the Aberdeen fans and players will never lie down to them.

My only real concern for Thursday, and it is a genuine one, is the state of mind of the Celtic players. It is easy to say the players will be desperate to win it for Tommy but each person handles grief differently and some might just not be able to focus on this match - regardless of what is at stake. They will want to give their best more than anything, but deep inside might just not be able to. With the funeral on Tuesday, emotions will be raw and a game on Thursday may well be too soon for some. I'm not in any way saying this will be the case, but it is a variable that lends another element of uncertainty above and beyond everything else.

If anyone doesn't perform on the night, there can be no recriminations, only understanding of what emotional turmoil the players must be going through.

If it all goes right on the night, and I think it will, it will be an astonishing show of team and management solidarity way beyond what it otherwise would have been - which is remarkable in itself.

Chris Sutton's a legend,

Ok then, how about in their last eight games only the Edinburgh clubs have scored against them and both of those games were in Edinburgh.

It's all about how you spin a story ;0)

I could not bring myself to cheer Motherwell's goal, if that makes me a bitter man so be it. They have long been a thorn in our side and will continue to be. They might still have won the league for the huns.AGAIN.

HHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIVA

Mark McGhee is not of the same stamp as some of his predecessors at Myrrh Park and would have motivated them. McGhee has gone up even further in my estimation this season (as a person and a manager). I told the Mothers he would bring them on and he has.

The sad thing is that many Mothers would have willingly surrendered the points to the darnel today because they hate us so much. Here's a wee convy I had in The Teser last night :-

bambi,

For sure.

However, ;) they lost a goal at Pittodrie in a 1-1 draw. Also, if you include it to 9 games they got pumped by St Johnstone 3-1 at home in the Q-finals of the Scottish cup.

Still, they're unlikely to come up against the same sort of firepower that the saints from Perth had that day.

Either way, I reckon StMirren will go for the jugular on Monday night. An early goal for the men from Paisley and they could visibly wilt in front of our very eyes.

Its probably just as well that I won't be able to see Thursday's match as I expect an ulcer to follow the gut wrenching tension of the last two Rangers matches. In truth though I fully expect it to be all over bar the shouting after Monday night. They really are now running on empty.

GORDON STRACHAN. We who are about to salute you.

Hello Hello It's three in a row.

Sorry think I got my songs wrong. Too much time in Manchester .

After the Motherwell 0-1 defeat in early April, the odds on Celtic being champs were about 12 to 1 - is this correct?

I couldn,t watch the game today, other than the last minute, even that was throught the fingers. Did anyone notice if the Huns kit man join in the applause today?

WG

Are you still there?

I was thinking about the Motherwell support listening to the game today on the radio.

They were there and they were willing their team to beat Rangers.

My first live football experiences were at Somerset Park in the early seventies. When Kenny Dalglish came over to where we were eating our macaroon bars to take a corner, there was blood pouring from a gash on his knee and I thought to myself, 'Kenny Dalglish is a flesh-and-blood human being'. That was a bit weird.

Anyway, you may remember that Celtic took the shed behind the Somerset Road goal and the whole of the terracing opposite the stand, plus the enclosure below the stand at Somerset. The Ayr fans went behind the goal at the Railway end and even then they didn't have the whole shed, just the middle part of it, with Celtic fans penning them in on either side. It was just a wee pocket of them, and I can see and hear them in my mind jumping about mad when Danny Masterton scored against us. Not a pleasant memory.

Well, to my point. We lived really close to the ground and, when they opened the gates, I also had occasion to go in when Rangers were in town. It was strange seeing Rangers fans fight one another, even then, but the most remarkable thing was, even that wee pocket behind the goal were absent. It was wall-to-wall Rangers. They must all have had urgent shopping to do that Saturday, or they simply turned up with a different scarf.

Paul,

I was wondering if the third wise man was also a poster. Is he one of the BB clique?!!! Or an occasional poster like myself? Any hints?

I just wanted to say I'm really pleased you're having happy days with that baby.

After everything you went through, they are fine words to see.

CQN has been a wonderful place to visit in the last 24 hours.

I have to confess to having two wobbles in my otherwise solid support for GS.

Coincidentally, they both came after M'well games. The first being the CIS semi, when Maloney dug us out of a hole and the other, a few weeks ago.

I now profess to be firmly in the manager's camp and I urge everyone to get behind him now and put aside any negative opinions or prejudices we had against him.

Paul, how about a few rallying calls this week, culminating with a public show of support on Thursday.

It may dispel any thoughts he may have of leaving.

Just heard on 5live that Paul Lambert won't speak to Sky at his second leg play off game because of the shoddy customer service he received with his home installation!

Snyde now off again, and will not be back on again I can assure you - D Provan ripped into WGS stating that he "does not carry himself as a Celtic manager" and will "continue to alienate " sections of the Celtic support.

IMO WGS acted as a fine ambassador for the club on Thursday.

On the contrary, D Provan will "continue to alienate" sections of the Celtic support with comments such as the above.

LOL Spirit thank you

Hail Hail

It is a great day after a very sad week. I am sure TB is looking down and smiling with Big Jock and Wee Jinky enjoying the rearangers result today! Now we must support our GLORIOUS GLASGOW CELTIC with more fervour and devotion on Thursday than ever all season.

Can someone enlighten me as to what is meant by all of this talk of "towels"? I am in Vancouver and I may have missed something over the last while.

Vancouvertim - a few weeks ago, after the Motherell game, many posters were 'throwing the towel in'. I wasn't one of them I may add!! The towel retrieval service is in meltdown at the moment I hear!

Might have asked this before.

But for any of you anoraks out there.

In season 64-65 we beat a team called Lexioes 3-0

I have Bobby Murdoch scoring with a penalty and Stevie Chalmers scoring.

Can anybody help with the other scorer?

My moment of weakness came after the home defeat by Motherwell when in sheer frustration I conceded the title. How wrong I was. I expected them to drop points, but not this many. And I also thought that we would drop points.

Whatever happens over the next few days the bhoys have done superbly to take the title race to the wire. I think a lot of the credit should to to Neil Lennon and to Gordon Strachan.

Our manager has conducted himself admirably this week, which must have been a terrible one for him personally. The dignity and leadership of our club he has shown has been superb and he has been a credit to Celtic.

We have been blessed with some great managers in our history and IMHO, the wee man has shown himself to be a worthy successor to Messrs Maley, Stein et al.

(sorry for the spelling)

Amazing result today. Those last few minutes were excruciatingly unbearable. I couldn't watch it but I couldn't think about anything else. So relieved when the final score came through.

I am not getting carried away as we still have to hold up our own end of the bargain and that is a tall order. Tannadice is one of the most difficult grounds to visit in the SPL and we will have our work cut out. I hope the momentum we have built up over the last few weeks is enough to carry us over the line.

I don't have a ticket for Tannadice but for those lucky enough to be going to Dundee on Thursday, you have a huge role to play. If the players are looking jaded it is your job to drag them back to their feet and drive them forward. We need a wall of noise from our fans from the first minute till the last to help bring the trophy back to paradise. Sing for Phil & Tommy as they too will be belting out the Celtic song somewhere.

The players have an opportunity to make themselves legends. The biggest points turnaround ever in the SPL (I think) is only 90 minutes away. They should not be lacking in motivation: they have taken a lot of criticism from various angles this season; they have been given little credit for the things they have done well (beating Milan should have been trumpeted by the Scottish media but wasn't); they have been subjected (like us) to the media fawning over their rivals to unprecedented levels and they have suffered the untimely loss of a very dear friend. I hope they can channel all this into a league winning performance on Thursday.

Finally Gordon Strachan has the opportunity to cement his position as one of Celtic's greatest managers since Jock Stein with a 3rd straight league title. I was very critical of him after we lost to Motherwell and our seeming inability to beat Rangers. He has reacted to adversity like all good managers do - by winning games which really matter. 2 convincing league wins against Rangers and hard fought wins against Motherwell, Aberdeen and Hibs show that he has the stomach for a fight and the guile to outwit a more experienced manager across the city.

I am in no doubt he is the best man for the job right now. Anyone who is in any doubt as to his commitment to the club should watch the press conference after Tommy's death to see how connected he realy is. It may have taken him time to appreciate the nature of the job but this is certainly much more than a job to him. He knows how important it is to win on Thursday and should be given a standing ovation from the fans before, during and after the game for wha he has achieved over the last 3 years but especially what he has achieved over the last 2 months when the chips were really down.

Maybe St Mirren will take the pressure off by taking points off the dark side on Monday but we have a chance to make history and it is vital that we do not pass it up.

Mon the hoops! We need this!

Knowing that Tommy Burns was ill, but not knowing he would tragically no longer be with us by the time the match came around, I ended my post with, "Let's do it for Tommy."

Thursday will be an incredibly emotional night no matter what the outcome, but I feel the club must make an immediate tribute to Tommy of the match.

I'd love to see Celtic wear a replica of the 1981 strip (white v-neck), with all of the players wearing the no.10 shorts which if memory serves, Tommy wore that night. I realise that the kit sponsor then was Umbro, but surely Nike could make a one-off replica with either their own logo, or even none. At the very least, the Celtic badge should have a suitable embroidered message around it, along the lines of "Tommy Burns, You'll Never Walk Alone."

Thursday night is set up like the ending of a sentimental American sports movie, and I can think of no greater motivation for the players than to do it in memory of a Celtic Legend.

Had just looked up The Celtic Football Companion but you guys must have memorised it all!
It`s going to be a nervous week, after living through 2003 and 2005 we may just deserve a break.

Alan Green on FiveLive has had two Rangers supporters on who are claiming, `it wuznae us` :-/ He`s joining in with them. Excuses!

Niknaktic & Arthur

Thanks for that !

The view fae the windae is a we bit clearer tonight, although a strange orange fog has still to clear before the people can sing.

Camon you Saints, be a buddy and to the Celts a favour!!!!!!!!

Terry that's funny because Keevins was quite resolute in his statement today that the league will go down to the last day of the season with Rangers having every chance of winning league. It's strange how having the race out of your hands with a number of games to go provokes much more pessimism than falling behind in the race with only a game left.

Tommy is the second ex-Celt to pass away this week. On Monday Seton Airlie died at the age of 88 in Worcester. Second was the fellow who played for Cannes in the south of France and had Pablo Picasso as a neighbour. Pablo offered him a painting when he was starting out. Seton turned it down thinking it would not be worth anything.

Paul,

I'm sure you'll have been keeping your powder dry on the events in Manchester in what has become a difficult week.

Many fans have never forgiven the DR for their 'Thugs, Thieves and Liars' front page following a bhoys night out.

Not that you need any help in the headline writing dept. but never before has that headline felt so apt for TFOD.

squire danaher: Didn't hear that but it's shocking. What's Provan's problem - jealousy?

In this of all weeks when support for WGS is probably at its highest ever level, Provan wants to put a dampener on that. Pillock!

Gordon was a credit to himself and Celtic on Thursday. In fact, as good a tribute to Tommy Burns as any would be to sing Gordon Strachan's name loudly on Thursday night. That would surely have made Tommy happy.

If Tommy Burns could put his faith in Gordon Strachan as being the best for Celtic, who are the fans or pundits who know better?

St. Michaels Bhoy, I don’t think the 1981 strip is a viable ideal but I think you are onto something with the No. 10 on their shorts.

Devils advocate, indeed. Although my powder was utilised on the subject yesterday evening.

Today's result has given everybody great hope. Let's hope Gus McPherson was listening to his mentor, after today's game, when he encouraged all SPL managers invoved in the remaining games to fight as hard as Motherwell. We'll see.

After that, it's up to the players. With all that's happened over the last few days and weeks, they should surely be up for it.

Squire Danaher
Could you elaborate al little on what David Provan said?

I was listening to 5 Live and hearing Alan Greene more or less condone Wednesday's riots blaming Stoke City fans in Rangers strips - and the Manchester police of course!

current form table last 6 matches

bambi,

I want to know that also. He didn't join in with Jimmy Johnstones applause if my memory serves me right. Does anyone know if he did.

Terry O'Neill...........

Thanks for the link. A bit of schadenfreude going on. I never read the record - who is "swanny"?

If Gordon had played that podcast to the players, it may well just have galvanised them.

Green on 5 live now dragging 'the other side' into the argument. He is saying that one side is as bad as the other. Being challenged by the caller who is defending Celtic fans' reputation.

I hate to go on about death but have we ever endured so many in one season -Phil O'Donnell, John Cushley, Tommy Burns and Seton Airlie.
Has McCurry been granted the game at Pittodrie, or worse ast Tannadice ? I fancy Eddie Smith for either

Is he the original Green Hun? Or, has he tasted succulent lamb as well?

heatleader

The ref wont matter on Thursday.Too much momentum and these players will Have Gladiatorial powers.Im not working Friday. So pleased as celebration hangover will be murder.

Guys - i think we're all agreed on the hideous nature of the illuminati.

I think we should all take a vote on the following; any post which mentions the record, clyde, leckie et all should be reported to P67 for immediate removal? My choice is not to read them them. Keep them off CQN!! Kill the problem at source!

what say you guys?

heatleader,

They have Craig Thomson (Tue) and Kenny Clark (Thu). We have Stuart Dougal.

Sorrry if this has been posted earlier a wee text from an auld pal of mine.
Walter Smith has asked the Manchester police to play a friendly match this pre-season.
When asked why? he replied it`s the only mob we`ve attacked in europe all season..........

Referees for the next games:

St. Mirren v Rangers - Craig Thomson

22nd May
Aberdeen v Rangers - Kenny Clark
