After Manchester, Rangers expelled from Europe
Less than three months after their last European campaign ended in
Manchester, Rangers were expelled from European competition today, 5 August 2008:
Before the SPL season starts,
before the Olympics start,
before the kids go back to school, but, my friends,
before Queen of the South!
This is the shortest gap any team has ever had between being knocked out of Europe in history, a truly historic achievement for the Ibrox club. It also means another couple of million pounds for Celtic, who will be sole recipients of this year's Scottish TV pot.
Walter Smith will be Bratislavering with anger by the way his team were ripped apart after taking a lead against a team with a European coefficient that started the summer at only 2.
I will not pretend that this was as enjoyable to watch as our own 4-5 debacle three years ago would have been for others, but two days after the 5-0 reversal which put that particular train in motion, Celtic responded by signing Japanese hero Shunsuke Nakamura. Soon afterwards thousands of Celtic fans put their hands in their pockets to make up the financial shortfall.
We knew how to respond to adversity, I suspect we are alone in this city in that respect.
Bring on St Mirren.
I've had that headline for months; 'been desperate to use it.

Rangers supremo, Walter was tonight hailed as a master tactician. Dignified, but not too proud to learn from others, Walter tonight took a leaf out of the book of another football great, Gary Megson. Rather than waste effort on a trophy that they can't win, Walter elected to play a team of reserves and have his side able now to concentrate on the big one, the SPL.
Walter made no apologies for playing the likes of Broadfoot, Dailly, Weir and Adam. The fact that no self respecting manager would ever consider going into Europe with such a hapless bunch of players did not phase Walter. 'The SPL is the big one', he said. 'Playing meaningless games in Europe cost us the league last year. We weren't going to make that mistake again'.
Others within the game couldn't hide their admiration. 'I wish I had thought of that' said Alex McLeish. 'Interesting concept' said Alex Ferguson.
Meanwhile, Celtic looked like a club in crisis tonight, as they contemplated a series of tough ties on the continent while their arch rivals would be snugly tucked up in bed. A spokesman for Uefa said that, despite the clearly ludicrous situation, there was no explicit rule against playing Charlie Adam in a European competition.
In related news, the SFA said they would insist that the SPL not rearrange any league games this season.
Not again!!
Ahem....:)
Paul67
I'm convinced that Carlos Cuellar's recent "injury" was a put-up job to ensure that he wouldn't be cup-tied for another team in European competition should the "unthinkable" happen and the Rearrangers failed to see off Kaunas.
He will now be sold before the window closes, probably along with McGregor as financial damage limitation kicks in...though McGregor took a few bob off his asking price tonight.
Cracked crests in the laptop loyal's organs tomorrow?
A big signing or two from the Celts now would really hammer the nail in a bit more.

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me.

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away

But do we know how to press home an advantage, Paul?
They look a poor, technically deficient team that will have trouble creating chances. And they have an average at best set of strikers who won't convert them anyway.
Now we can add defeated and dispirited to the list.
So, after tonight's comedy show we can get onto the football. The season starts soon for the good teams!
Do Rangers now fall into the Junior Cup?

Paul, to be serious for a minute (I know, it is difficult at the moment)....but we really DO need to strengthen the squad. Their focus (once they get it back) will be singular. If history has taught us anything, it is that there is a relationship between European jaunts and dropped league points.
I'm not sure what effect tonight will have on their domestic chances, but tiredness won't be a factor.
Let's get some bodies in. And good ones......
Dear Rangers, please accept my immediate resignation as technical director of your fledgling F1 team. Life in the slow lane would surely make me lose my mind

The Wat Meister: “It's fairly ridiculous that you can reach a European final and then get knocked out in the first game the next season.”
Kenny Miller said that he intends enjoying CL football this season. Rumour has it that he has a seat behind the directors at Celtic Park where he can enjoy watching the fair heeled fillies whilst sipping his wee glass of champers cos he won't be savouring it at Eyepox. Oh what a wonderful feeling, oh what a wonderful day, everything's perfect apart from down govan's way!!
Should we sign Cuellar? giving them the money they've donated to us tonight back?
Murray sort it out!! Give Wattie a 10yr extension
Traynor baiting the Hun - "if they sell Cueller they'll finish fourth".
Oh what joy even before Celtic kick a ball in anger.
Fingers crossed the SSM can deliver the goods and put the boot in to this mob.
Theplanner, the clock is ticking on Carlos time at Ibrox.
Gordon J, tonight is a manifestation of Rangers being lost in our slip-stream for years.
After the discussion about Celtic TV earlier, I’ve been watching the chat and phone-in show on Rangers TV for the last half hour, what a hoot!

"Now that the dust has settled, it is time for reflection. We can help repair the damage done to our hard won reputation and try to ensure that the Bears travelling with the team in 2008/09 can continue the fabulous work undertaken in this years long Euro run."
Don't think they will be doing much travelling or anymore fabulous work this year :-)
Just had a look on FF and this is the message. Looks like my name on here could be prophetic. Whooooooeeeee!

We've discussed the relative merits of boosting co-efficients, the idea of rest if not playing in Europe, the consequences of income from UEFA competition and various other issues relating to a European run, but my god, ignoring all that, they are truly awful!
Despite the Artmedia fiasco, when another couple of minutes injury time at CP may proven historic as they were on their knees and one should note they played our Govan friends twice without losing, Celtic were at least involving and decent to watch as no one quite knew how how many goals we were going to see.
They on the other hand are astonishingly poor in movement, passing, and the ability to find a forward, although I know there weren't many on the park. I actually felt sorry for Kenny Miller who ran into lanes and tried to create space for 80 minutes but hardly got a kick as no one could find him in any decent position.
If we can't complete four in a row, then I have no idea how it will happen short of some kind of Armageddon.
Paul67,
PL has got the mother of all opportunities to really stick the boot right into them. Reveal the signings as soon as please!!
Oh my god!! I have been waiting for this moment since growing up during the nine in a row era. We could be on the verge of buliding something massive and leave them trailing.
In some peversed kind of way i don't suppose Pete's been tying up the deals and holding them off in the wake of their result at Ibrox last week, to see if the impossible happened tonight? :)
I expect with that extra dough another striker now. That's five players i want in. : )
Anybody see Dougie Donnelly's face at the end of the game there ? I think Craig Levein was trying to stop himself from laughing. Douglas says that means all the European money for the season will go to Celtic then. CL without trying to laugh, there will be a few happy Celtic board members tonight. Brilliant CL. Stick it right at them!!
Dougie before the game, i know for a fact that Walter is trying to buy another couple in. Those cosy seast in Ibrox directors box good Dougie?

Just thinking back to Tannadice when we won the league. It was just a magic feeling knowing that we were directly into the Champions League. But tonight. Well that really just puts the tin lid on. Hope now we can sign a couple of players now that will strengthen the team.
Hail Hail.
stopped rolling around the floor laughing long enough to read your whole post paul , by god you know how to put the boot in.
Vladimir Romanov interview “coming up” on Radio Scotland. It sounds like they're checking a couple of things with the lawyers. Should be good.
It may be, as Paul says, that they are going for the big SPL. Personally, I think this is just their rather extreme way of avoiding the heartache of ever again losing a UEFA Cup Final. Oh joy!....except that I forgot it was an early kick off and knew nothing about it 'til after the event
As Rangers have given us money several weeks ago with Miller's sell-on clause kicking into effect and tonight with their generous offer of letting us keep all the entire Champions League fund, I think it'd only be fair for us to return the gesture by using some of this windfall to purchase Cueller. No doubt many Ranger's fans would be very appreciative of this our goodwill.
Listening to Real Radio.
I'm disgusted at myself for enjoying their misery so much!!
Paul 67, I hope that this article is not schadenfreud(spelling ?). I thought I detected a hint of g;oating there, I may be wrong.
However please allow me to retort, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha etc.

Ho, ho, wee Billy Dodds talking about "3 or 4" new sighnings for Rangers.
Clearly sums weren't his strong point at school.
I had to laugh when Craig Paterson said "the worrying thing for me is that playerswill not want to come because of no CL football".
Why should an impartial pundit be unduly "worried" about the plight of Rangers?
Lurgan 56, I am glad you have admitted to the Real radio thing. I believe a sin shared is a sin halved,
The only downside is that is is 'physically impossible' [(c) Walter] to watch Rangers TV and listen to both Real Radio and Radio Scotland simultaneously.
Apparently Mad Vlad has given an 'interesting' interview. Coming up on Radio Scotland.

Only sorry I don't know any huns here in Cork to slag unmercifully.
Few injuries in the gym I was training in tonight; in the 87th minute two guys went flying off the tread-mill and four fell off their bikes. All were wearing green t-shirts and the minor injuries could not wipe the smile off their faces.

How much will any team pay for Cuellar? he is overrated anyway and tonights result has driven his price down, at this rate Darling will be stepping in to support the great instituition that they see themselves as.
Murray cannot go to his fan base like our board did following the Artmedia result, he has tried before and sold a huge £1m of stock he bought the rest or MIM did. What is the way out for them? To me they have few player assets maybe Thompson and an overvalued stadium.

They've been flung out even before the SPL and SFA have managed to come up with a rearranger policy. I'll bet the new policy won't allow re-arranging now that it's Celtic, Queen of the South and Motherwell left holding the challenge.

Re-arangers on the other hand lost one and drew one, their co-efficient for this season is: 0.2885 By virtue of the fact we are qualified for the group stages, our current 2008/09 co-efficient stands at a mighty 3.2885 without having even kicked a ball.

Super Vlad radio interview -
"The Scottish League is merely an instrument... in the hands of Mafia."
You have to say, he's got a fair bit of insight...
Romanov on BBC Scotland:
'The Scottish League is an instrument in the hands of the mafia'
"The scottish league is only an instrument in the hands of the mafia. Mad Vlad" 2 minutes ago.
nacho novo scored the winner tonight and nobody can tell me otherwise
WELL DONE NACHO CREDIT WHERE CREDITS DUE .
Great day, and after all the gloating and celebrations I hope to see us strengthen to go forward and not repeat last Summer of assuming we will win the SPL.
Come one Celtic !
Some seriously funny emails to Radio Scotland.
"Walter's" signing policy described as 'a bampot throwing darts at a Panini sticker album'.
Another fan has emailed blaming the "SPL's refusal to grant a season extension" for tonight's defeat.
Meanwhile Mad Vlad has said in his interview that beating the team form Andora in the previois round was a better result.
Paul,
I'm listening to Radio Scotland phone-in, and a woman from Fife
just e-mailed to say that because the SPL did not grant an extension it ultimately cost them in Europe!!! Its either 3 months late of she wanted an extension to the close season!!!
Not as much as Romanov though, who has just stated that Scottish Football is an instrument in the hands of the Mafia!!! Jim Spence almost speechless for once, thankfully.
Its a bizarre night but I am so glad we are not on the receiving end of all of this.
Just got in from work. YESSSSSS!
This is very amusing.
I've got a good feeling about this season. I think we'll be good in Europe and we'll win the league again.
Crosas signs for roughly £700,000 tonight, right after Rangers give us £2,500,000. Can't get any better than that.
Was planning on having a quiet nite in, however, having heard the huns result on the radio i feel duty bound to venture out to catch up on all the anticipated posts.
Haven't had any alcohol for a week or so, this will be rectified within the hour.
Just had to register my happiness. CL yer havin a laff!

Few injuries in the gym I was training in tonight; in the 87th minute two guys went flying off the tread-mill and four fell off their bikes. All were wearing green t-shirts and the minor injuries could not wipe the smile off their faces.

Hun to Traynor: "just give Broadfoot back to St Mirren. I don't even want any money for him".
LOL!!!
Good news re Crosas, don't know much about him, but Barca must still rate him if they have insisted on the buy back?
I thought Broadfoot, Weir & Dailly were solid tonight.....
Do you think there will be any mention of the huns getting papped oot of Europe tomorrow in the Daily Record or will they just run with the usual:
Murray ready to hand Walter a Transfer War chest
Gers edged out by lucky Kaunus, but raring to go in SPL
Bazza to play through pain barrier to secure championship
RST Bart Bored?
Chris
These nice happy feelings just keep on coming.
Out of europe before the season starts, if this was because of their exertions of last year they shouldnt have done as much pre saeson training, cuellar defo for the off, why resign weir and dailly and then buy another centre half???
Has he with no surname been interviewed yet, I would love to hear his excuses.
Walter must stay!

Barcelona and Celtic have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Marc Crosas for half a million euros as an initial fee, with possible add-ons amounting to €900,000, depending on the player appearing in the Champions' League and helping Celtic to win trophies.
In addition, Barcelona have secured the rights to 25% of any future transfer of the player and the right to buy him back at the end of season 2009–2010 for the sum of €2 million.
Blogger GG it was Airdrie Leisure Centre mate!
I know that does seem like a paradox.
Come on over to my place, hey you, I'm having a party!
I've already had texts from mates comparing this to Bratislava. i said it on here last night and I'll say it again. We would never have lost that tie had we played the 1st leg at home. It was a freak result that happens once in a generation and we almost pulled it out the bag. Make no mistake, this was no freak result.
You've got to love the new sponsor joke! Not read through the comments and no doubt been done to death already.
ShanghaiHoops, is this confirmed. If so another swift boot in the nether regions to them from the boot of the SSM!
Rangers In Europe 08/09 DVD NOW ON SALE!!!
Shanghai Hoops,
I could only get Ravi as well - eventually had to turf the missus into the bedroom so I could get it through Sky digital!!
It also puts their run to Manchester into perspective.
After Sevile we beat Kaunus 4-0 away in a qualifier and I think our group stage performance over the six games was our best even although we did not qualify. And I'm still to mention knocking out Barca.

Sad git that I am, I gloated over the post-mortem on Re-arrangers TV with Gordon Dalziel and Alan McLaren.
Priceless - definitely should have been sponsored by Mastercard!
Dalziel actually said they were still tired after all the games they played last year.
I think the SFA should have made sure that the Liverpool friendly was put back to October to allow more time to prepare for this game.
As usual George Peat and Gordon Smith have been incompetent on this.

Oh am I a happy Bhoy tonight. Coming from Lithuanian descent as I do it gives me even greater pleasure. Add the Crosas news from Barcelona - I might just have a wee sore head tomorrow!! Added to that is the fact that, by birth I am a Doonhamer and isn't it great that QOS have lasted longer in Europe than they have!! Now is asking for a Falkirk win on Saturday just being too greedy?

Barca's Spanish language site has the Crosas story is well. My Spanish is very rusty, but it looks like:
"The FC Barcelona and the Celtic de Glasgow have arrived at a principle in agreement for the transfer of Marc Crosas for 900,000 Euros plus add-ons. The blue and reds club has arrived at an agreement in principle with Celtic for the transfer of Marc Crosas to the Scottish club. The FC Barcelona will receive 900,000 Euros, plus add-ons based on appearances of the player, in th Chapions League and league matches. Also, the FC Barcelona has the right to 25% of any possible future transfer and an option of repurchase at the end of season 2009/10 for 2 million Euros.

the last rangers fan justifiably launched into murray for the lies about the stadium redevelopment....they want murray to answer and are asking for his removal....
Excellent tonight! Loving the meltdown across the way!
We still need to get a couple in though, hopefully by the weekend!
Had a look at the Crosas story on the Barca website, it effectively looks like a loan deal, 1.4 million euros from us, but if he's any good they get to buy him back for 2 million euros a year later? Seems like a very good deal for Barca... Can't wait to see how the redtops spin this one!
They´re leaving together,
but still its farewell
And maybe they´ll come back,
To europe one day who can tell?
I guess there is no one to blame
As watty´s still around
Will things ever be the same again?
Its the final meltdown...

snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world

it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, the Ladder
start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire
in a fire, representing seven games, and a government

a hurry with the furys breathing down your neck. Team
by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing. Fine, then. Uh oh,
overflow, population, common food, but it'll do to Save
yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs,
listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and
the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic,

psyched.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign
towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself
churn. Lock it in, uniforming, book burning, blood
letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a motive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no
fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament,
tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions,
offer me alternatives and I decline.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
The other night I dreamt of knives, continental

anyway who cares sunday will take care of itself we will get there somehow
haven't enjoyed a phone in so much one guy demanding traynor drags murray into the studio to allow the fans to quiz him on the stadium and where has the money gone

Haven't posted for ages (still an avid reader) but can't resist tonight. They were absolutely awful, and if they continue like that any team in the SPL will be capable of taking points from them.

guys from follow follow BEFORE tonights result :)
The problem with Walter Smith, as I see it is :-
1. His inability to grasp the fact that playing players out of position is, in the long run, detrimental to both the player(s) concerned and to the team in general.
2. His inability to grasp that in the modern game full-backs are vital in an attacking sense, and that by playing Centre-Backs at full back (a recurring nightmare under Smith) it unbalances the whole side.
3. His failure to grasp the fact that football is a simple game, with only two objectives a) To score goals b) To prevent the opposition from scoring.
4. His failure to identify the shortcomings that we there for all to see last season and rectify them in time for the season ahead.
5. His all too apparent liking for signing the "jack of all trades, master of none" type player.
I recall only too well back in 1998 informing an acquaintance of mine with more than a passing interest in the fortunes of Everton FC that in due course Walter would flood his side with centre-backs I gave a time-scale of 6 months, the bold Walter managed it in six weeks!!
For Dave McPherson, Basile Boli and Alan McLaren in his first stint read Kirk Broadfoot,Christian Dailly and Sasa Papac at present. I nearly wept on reading Walter's quote on our new signing form Charlton "He's a centre-half, but can also play in midfield," not unless he's Beckenbuer Walter!!
Our friends across the city, while by no means the finished article, have at least grasped the fact that you cannot ask players to do that of which they are incapable.
It was glaringly obvious, to me at any rate that for the new season we required two full-backs, a creative player in midfield, and at least one genuine wide man...what did we get 3 strikers, who's goalscoring prowess is somewhat less than impressive and a couple of centre-backs(one of whom can play in midfield the other has hardly kicked a ball in 3 seasons). In short we've shelled out the best part of £10m and not addressed any of the areas where we needed strengthened!!
Did he buy the strikers in the hope of unloading Cousin and Darcheville ? If so he thicker than I thought, who in their right mind would buy either of that pair?
Is he content to play centre-backs in the full backs positions again this season.....I think we know the answer to that.?
Does he truly believe Lee McCulloch is the answer to our lack of creativity in midfield?
Does he imagine that a strike force of Miller/Lafferty and or Velicka will produce more goals than one including Kris Boyd?
If any of the above are true then his time is well and truly up.
The Big Cheese
Might be getting a name as a bad moral example here, but after the success of my last two tips, it would be plain mean to deny you all another one.
Falkirk win on Saturday - 13/2
Can anyone see a pattern emerging in my betting?
