Celtic year-end accounts, profit with debt down
Celtic
released their preliminary annual accounts this afternoon which confirm the
financial stability expected of the club.
Turnover fell 3% to £72.95m (2008: £75.24m), largely as a result of a
fall in merchandising after the highs of the Lisbon Lions 40th anniversary
merchandise, much of which fell into the previous year. The club also only released one new strip
during the year; the previous year saw the release of two strips.
A welcome profit before taxation of £4.44m was made; down considerably from the
£15.04m made the previous year, however, this figure was helped considerably by
the sale of players, £9.40m in season ending 2007, compared to £5.70m in season
ending 2008. Without the sale of Kenny
Miller and Craig Beattie last season, the club would have returned a loss,
despite progressing to the knock out stage of the Champions League.
Year-end bank debt fell slightly to £3.52m (2007: £4.99m), a very healthy
position for the club to be in.
Operating expenses rose 8% to £64.09m (2007: 59.28m), which is the figure the
club needs to clear before player trading to break even.
Well done, Celtic, for another excellent set of accounts, but with operating expenses
now at the levels they are, the importance of Champions League football to the
club cannot be overstated.

On here I normally only read posts that are reasonably interesting and articulate, yours qualify on both counts, therefore I was shocked to come upon your 'joke' yesterday re David Murray. As a fan base I like to think we are way way above that. Its got to be out of character for you - right? Not wanting to start another ding dong on here or anything like that, simply responding to your 10.16 post.
missed gold by 0.000005 of a second . Always next time. Time for my scratcher I think. Have a great weekend all.

just think if we can get shot of bobo and tommy graveson of the books then our debt would be wiped out, just about!
So, those fans that demand multi £ million signings remember that if it were not for selling Beattie and Misser we would have lost money so careful managing of our finances is vital.
We can only spend what we can afford and with the credit crunch still in its infancy, storm clouds will gather over clubs that don't keep a close eye on their financials (major storms forecast over Ipox for many years).
If only we can get BB, TG and DR off the books and every so often sell a fringe type player for a million or two (Evander?) we can maintain a healthy balance book.
For substantial progress i.e. last 8 of CL, we need to be out of the SPHell.
Whatever happened to the North European League?

Paul
Thanks for your breakdown of the financial state of the nation, much appreciated by this particular occupant of the financial slow-lane, as are the insights of excellent posters such as NeilR, Barcabhoy, Malceye and many others.
Now, a question. To my untrained eyes, the rise of 8% in operating expenses seems quite high. What did we get for that extra cost? Is it all down to the increase in the cost of energy et cetera? Is part of it connected to Lennoxtown (not the place itself, which I know the last rights issue covered, but the physical move)?

Something nagging at the back of the mind tells me Murray 'bought' the rights back off NTL for the token sum of £1.
NTL was in a real mess. I remember hoping they'd hold Rangers to ransom to get the £40m back. The smoke and mirrors must have worked that time.
Lennondinho18,
nice hat-trick there mate.
Celtic_First/Paul,
can I add to what CF enquired about. With our debt now down to a very good level have you any info on if the club will go back into debt re signings in the next couple of seasons? I hope we dont, looking forward to the day we can say we have money in the bank.
The DR are now reporting that Bobo has turned down a 30K per offer from Birmingham, to stay at Celtic.
Why should anyone belive that? Do they seriously think we all missed Wolves rubbishing their last Bobo story re rejecting 27.5K per week from Birmingham?
What are they up to I wonder?

anyone know anything?

Would it be true to say we're preety much operating at the peak of our income ? Difficult to see where any extra would come from.
Celtic First
The rise in opex will be due to a number of factors, 2-3% inflation, increase in wages as the players that came in are on higher wages than the players that left. In addition the CL we had to put on an extra couple of games, although these games add revenue they also add costs - this all adds up.
Cheers

Joshyboy,
Before I head out I just wanted to congratulate you on taking dobberism to a whole new level.
joshyboy - a welcome addition to the CQN family - remembering that we have Celtic fans like joshy always helps when we suffer the occasional defeat. No offence joshy, you certainly seem able to bring out the best in some of the more established posters!
Nakagod and OUAT - perhaps we can meet up before the next home game and I will buy you guys a nice flute of LPR champagne..
joshyboy careful you don't out yourself with this talk of flutes :)
All credit to see Joshy/Gart Cairn/AN Other upping the ante by bringing up religion on the last thread.
Dangle enough bait, Joshy.....
Still strangely fascinating to see how personalities spill out on the internet.
STANDING UP
The part Celtic supporters play in the Club's financial results has never been more illustrated than in these accounts. One new strip versus two, a Scottish Cup run versus early exit, 40th anniversay merchandising income versus normal returns, can all be the difference berween profit and loss.
Nor can we underestimate the effect on the financial results of highly paid surplus players, a la Tommy G, Deek and Bobo in the ever increasing operating expenses. I hope we can part company amicably with them. With no obvious income from player sales this year Rangers failure to reach the CL really has bridged a gap for us. The gift from that famous Thursday that keeps on giving. Cheers lads!
It is all a bit ludicrous when you think of the amount of money, colour and goodwill Celtic put into European Football that mid table EPL Clubs are handed so much cash from TV. Competitive advantage is made a mockery of, but then again we are not innocent in that we are doing the same to the likes of Hibs. Time to revisit wage caps.
Joshyboy - i am reasonably new to the site, and already i cannot stand you, why are you so irritating? have you nothing better to do? why not talk about Celtic? all you do is try and pick fights with your fellow supporters, have you anything constructive to say (to this you will reply a smart **** comment) please start trying to be nice as you make me want to smash my computer.
Hi Paul,
“No news” re Maloney?
That is NOT a denial!!! I get the feeling you’re keeping your powder dry again.
Everyone else….
I’d like to offer a sincere apology to you all. You were right. I was SO wrong.
I openly said shortly after his appearance on here that I found him funny (not in a laughing WITH him way I must point out) and even called for him NOT to banned by Paul.
I’m ashamed to admit that I had a sort of morbid fascination with his posts (almost like the old circus freak-show). I kept wondering just how far he was prepared to go.
Well, the “shock” value faded pretty quickly. He simply became boring (sorry JB, if your intent is to be annoying you failed even that simple task).
The Walter Mitty stories of wealth were originally what made me laugh (AT him), however, at the end of the last thread he sunk below what I thought was possible. We all know he is a child, and NOT a man with a 45yr old YOUNGER brother. Anyone who could make something like that up about a family member (imaginary or otherwise) is quite simply SICK.
The child is disturbed and needs psychiatric help. God pity him and anyone close to him.
Apolgies Paul, copied over from the last thread, hope I'm not boring anybosy by repeating it.
Joshyboy:
I was passing thru the blog a couple of weeks ago and I saw you having a wee tiff with one of two of your fellow bloggers. Somehow a wee wager was raised I think the sum mentioned was 150 thousand.
Well I might not be as wealthy as you, maybees I am, maybees I’m not, who knows and who cares but I think when it comes to a wee wager you might just be as big as mug as me.
So to get to the point let’s put a few quid where our mouths are; I’m going to be home for a game in the next few weeks, work and domestics all being sweet, now when I come home, what say you and I, with as many BB’s Cliquee’s who care to witness, meet up before whichever Celtic home game I can make and we have ourselves a wee wager.
Maybe correct score.
Maybe first scorer.
Maybe time of first goal.
Or any permutation of any bet on a single game you care to mention.
We can have ourselves a trifecta or if you chose. 50 GRAND on each single bet and a further 50 GRAND on top on who calls the most correct.
That is a grand total of 200k as you like to put it. If you are up for it I will have my bank certify cheques to whatever sum you care to mention up to a value of 500k and I will have them with me in person when I get there.
What say you big man??? You up for a wee wager???
You and me with a 500k limit. (certified bankers cheques only)

He was linked with us about 8 weeks ago as he doesn't look like being part of Sir Furious' plans this season.
However it's believed that he want to return to France with Bordeaux looking like the favourites to win his signature.

Lovely.
Nakagod, not today.
Maisy, 1:56, with CL money, the Uefa Cup run and selling Hutton, Rangers will be miles more profitable than us. No other SPL club really compares.

Hi All,
There seems to be a little bit of negative feeling regarding the signing of Loovens from an unfashionable club like Cardiff. Many of you have seen the match we played against them in Portugal, a game in which, I thought, both Cardiff center halfs (halves?) were superb. In discussing the match with a bluebird friend I mentioned that Loovens was exactly what we needed at CP. At this point I was unaware tht he was even on our radar. I only knew that he was supposedly part of a deal that would take fat boy Boyd to Ninian park. I told my mate then that I thought they were crazy to even cnsider parting with such a quality player for Boyd. Delighted with this signing..lets hope I am proved right..
Welcome to Celtic Glenn.

Well spotted there mate! The profit of £4.4 Mio includes the write off of £3.19 Mio to terminate contracts so we made an actual profit of £7.59 Mio which is pretty damn good really!
I think we need to get Bobo and Tommy Graveson off the premises completely as they must bring down the morale of the rest of the group pulling out huge wages for training with the reserves or youths.
Don'y know much about Loovens but as always any new signing will get my full support, I would take back wee Shaun in a heartbeat, he could transform our play middle to front and give us another great option especially in the situations where Naka is injured.
Hopefully we will see some movement soon in the transfer market!
Hail Hail!

I know they have a different company structure and probably accounting period but are you able to tell us how these figures compare to Rangers in terms of turnover , profit before tax and debt.
With stagnent income and high costs it illustrates the difficulties in enhancing the team to meet our expectations without incrasing debt.

Bhoy from county Hell
certified cheques can only be paid out to the payee; they also require my signature and I can have them drawn to include two witnessess - otherwise they are useless.
I could have the money transfered but that becomes a hassle with the UK taxman.
I could have them drawn agains my account in either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, which would be my choice but I don't know if Joshyboy can cover the bet in those countries.
Normally I don't bet. I allow myself one bet per year. This year I have already have had two.
I bet on Celtic to win the league before the first of the two Rangers games.
I bet on Kaunus to knock Rangers out.
Today I was cashing in my 11 year old Holden Astra for my very first Ferrari.
The deal has been dragging on for almost three months and tonight the business manager for the dealership called to say that they would not refund me $300 on my Australian road tax against the new car.
I told him to stuff his car where the sun don't shine.
He said we had a contract and their lawyers would be in touch.
I had already spoken to my lawyer before I told him to widen his anus.
So now I HAVE A FEW BOB TO WASTE.
After all I quite like my 11 year piece of brown stuff Astra.
It is green and Ferrari don't do green.
So what about it big man????
Paul67, thanks for summarising the figures, just shows to all the support that we dont have a huge pot of money for player trading unless we sell players. With operating expenses at £64m and turnover of 72m the maths are easy enough for all to see, unless we buy cheap then we also need to be a selling club by the looks of it. It also shows the great importance of getting rid of expensive dead wood ie TG and not making that mistake again.
Is this years turnover forecast to be much higher?
your words are PMT -pure mental torture.
Shug 85
Championship is 4th richest in Europe, not the World....apologies.
Only EPL / LIGA and Bundesliga are richer.
TV deal plus attendances, merchandise, hospitality, and Play Off TV value aggregated and averaged by number of teams drive the value.
France, and Italy falling behind due to merchandise and attendance issues. In Italy there is no collective bargaining on TV.

Possilbhoy, ha! From the mouths…
Honestbhoy, this is a really difficult year to project Rangers as their figures were skewed by Hutton and the Uefa Cup, but my guess is they will be considerably more profitable than we are, their debt will be higher and turnover lower.
mountain_bhoy, this year will be higher as we have a second strip released. I also hope for a better run in the cups.
Jack Simpson shoots and scores.
bjmac03 and Paul
Thanks for the extra thoughts regarding operating expenses. What you say makes sense.
The charge for terminating employment contracts is interesting. If the club had paid out that money already (which I'm assuming is the only way it could have made it into the accounts), surely it couldn't be to anyone still turning up for training and playing (even if not for the first team).
Big Liam
Adam Virgo and Jiri Jarosik might make up some of that figure, I imagine we paid them both a severance but maybe a provision in there for others too that have not yet gone. Good question for the AGM.
Once Upon a Tim,
Ok I'll re-phrase that then.
From reading his posts for the last few weeks, "I" (that's ME, personally) feel it's safe to ASSUME he's not a grown man with a 45yr old younger brother.
Better?
IF I'm wrong, and he is indeed over 45yrs old, then his mental state is even worse than I thought!
Anyway, I've made a point of not entering into any direct dialogue with the boy(man?), and I'm certainly not getting into a debate ABOUT him either! The exposure is exactly what he wants. I simply wanted to apologise to others for my(sort of) defending him in the past. I really wish I hadn't.

NTL was in a real mess. I remember hoping they'd hold Rangers to ransom to get the £40m back. The smoke and mirrors must have worked that time.
Celtic_First, many thanks for that. I cant remember the details.
Does anyone have a rough idea of how much Sir Minty Murphy has now trousered from his custodianship of the tangerine house of ill repute? I was told it is estimated at be at least £40M in share deals alone and this figure is in addition to his annual income from supplying everything from Pies and burgers to youth team players which is approx £5m a year. You think the tangerine hordes have any idea that he has fleeced them for the last 20 years??
Old friend of mine in Glasgow supports Ayr United, he maintains that the reason Ayr knocked him back before he bought RFC was they knew he was dodgy and their nickname is "The Honest Men" and they felt that they could not be associated with such a rascal - I thought that was great!!
Bhoy from the County Hell - are you to stupid or thick to understand what I dont gamble means clown..

I dont think he did. i am sure this was all another smoke and mirrors job and it wasnt even Murray that reported this , but some uninformed Ranger trust website or soemthing like that.
From my memory - which is a bit hazy:
He had split the Media rights between NTL and some company he knocked out called Rangers ??Media/Sports?? International (or something like that) He then re-bought the Rangers (whatever) International company back for a Pound but valued it at £15 Million on the balance sheet.
Any updates or corrections to the above are welcome

I worked in Ayrshire at the time Minty tried to buy Ayr United and my colleague was a Director at Somerset Park.
I know a bit of the story, perhaps not all of it and you are absolutely correct.
The way Minty went about his business was a major shock to the Directors at Ayr United.
Even back then he was reasonably well known as one of Scotland's "up and coming entreprenuers"
but the way he handled himself and tried to buy in to the club was outrageous and I have no reason to disbelieve what i was told.
Maybe the story will get out one day.

I know Mawinney the irish chap who is president of The Football League vetoed an initiative by the 'Championship' group (it has it's own collective commercial division) a couple of years ago which was to invite Celtic and Rangers to play in that league without promotion for a minimum of 3or 4 years.
I understand discussions took place with both Celtic and Rangers at the time, indeed the chap who was in charge of the championship back then, and he even attended a Rangers Euro tie as a guest of Murray or should it be Murphy.
Back then it was 6th richest in Europe, and it has grown despite ahead of the others in the intervening period. Imagine what it would have done had we been on board ! As you say imagine what our revenue would have looked like too !
We get the 'matchday' and merchandise bit better than almost any EPL club, the only bit missing is the TV so even the Championship deal would have increased our income to compensate for Euro 'gap'. UEFA might still have been an option during this period pre Premiership access was attained.
Mahwinney could have been won over had the vision / drive / energy been evident from both Celtic and Rangers I am sure.
My only gripe with the current board is that they have lacked a focus on the big prize. 'We are robbing gas stations along the way, but we don't seem to have the plan to rob the bank'.
See you on Monday?

I like my Astra because it is good on fuel and most importantly of all, it is Green.
Further, I bought it at an inflated price of a very good friend of mine (who is a Hibee) who was down on his luck.
I'm quite attached to my little green Astra. It always bring fond memories.
I was only going to trade it in because my account was having kittens.
I hope he has many more, because I think I might just hang on to my little 'Green Astra' for a wee while yet.
Keep my money in the bank so to speak just in case I need it for a rainy day.

Mate, don't know you, wouldn't want to by the sounds of it..however, You seem to spend most of your time on this site down crying posters who make valid points and have been posting for many a year.
Here's an idea!! I know that some of the guy's in question meet up for a beer before the games, why don't you meet them there and call them clowns, orang-utan's ect to their faces.
