As for Brown from Hartlepool, i saw the link in the paper today and the brand him a midfielder? I don't know anything of him at all but if he is a midfielder i say no thanks.

GET US A LEFT BACK

Paul67 :- Congratulations to all involved, they are not only a credit to Celtic but a credit to people.

Thismancraig :- That's quite sad, but at least he isn't beyond redemption as he has good taste in his choice of county and golf courses :-)

Is Paul Robinson from WBA still an option for us?

I see Gordon Strachan was at the Hartlepool v WBA match last night to look at James Brown apparantly.
Strange how Robinson wasnt playing even though he didnt appear to get injured on Sat against Everton

congratulations and well done, glad to have been able enjoy aberdeens equaliser in the CHAMPIONS LOUNGE....

Standing up for the 3-IAR CHAMPIONS,CQN and attacking football the Glasgow Celtic Way

Please everybody keep in mind that the only source (I think) that has linked us with James Brown so far is the Daily Record.

Salt.

Congratulations....Paul67....CQN....And The 'BB Mafia'.... ;o))))

Take a Bow all involved....

Paul67 :- A couple of posts rwecently have commented on debt levels and the concensus seems to be that a certain level of debt can be a good thing. As someone who is a financial ignoramous could you (or another of the sites financial brains) give a brief summary of why this is so? To my way of thinking if you are X amount in debt you are paying Y amont in interest each year. Wouldn't it be better if the money rather than servicing a debt was either spent or placed in a bank where it would earn interest? That way the money would be there when needed and there would be no need to get in debt.

Standing up for Pablophanque and the CQN badge of honour "Celtic news not lazy journalism" :-)

EdUrsus

I agree, although where being in debt is handy is that it becomes much more difficult for a club to be taken over by a speculative investor with a questionable history like Romanov, and there are many other examples, particularly in the lower leagues of England where new owner happens to be a property developer whose first thoughts are sell the stadium and other facilities and pocket large fee from the construction company chosen to build the new one and having made his money leaves the club in ruins for some other poor bugger to try and lift out of the mire.

.

Happy St Martins Day....

Hope this Brings Back some Good Memories....Looking Forward to Sunday....

from previous article but on a new subject (I know you've seen it Paul67)

The psyche thing in Glasgow is massive. Gordon knows all about how it can pray on your mind for as long as 10 weeks at a time. Thats how long it takes for the next rangers game to come around. If you dont win the next one then it prays on your mind longer and so on and so on until you do win. Celtic have won only 2 of the last 7 rangers games - the pressure Gordon was under before the first rangers game last season was colossal. The momentum gained from that game won us the second game - rangers players psyche was shot to pieces after that and it was psyche (and the mighty hoops winning the last 7 games) that finally took its toll on the rangers players - they were absolutely shot to pieces - the motherwell game killed them off - AND HERE'S THE BEST BIT - THEY STILL AINT OVER IT.

Thats why this game is huge - the rangers players are still suffering from a psyche hangover. Celtic on the other hand have free and clear minds to express their ability and Gordon will be telling them this.

Pre game team talks are a contributing factor to winning a game, but its from today (Wed) that Gordon starts to work on individual minds for a weekend game - he knows who will be fit by now - he knows who will not make it. He takes players aside for wee one to ones - it might only be 30 seconds - but its a valuable 30 seconds for that young player to walk away thinking - my manager thinks i'm the dugs nutz. The players psyche has now got a positive injection and he's off and running. Have a wee nip at him for the next 3 days and by the time he walks out the hotel on Sunday morning he's well up for it and he thinks he's the best player on the park. He doesnt have to be the best player on the park he just has to be better than his immediate opposing player.

PSYCHE - get it right.

Incidentally - the last 3 business days prior to the transfer window shutting is when it all kicks off.

Tojo.

Just one more thing - when fans give their own players stick (which they are entitled to do - albeit sometimes unjustified) you take away the confidence that the backroonm staff have worked hard to build up. Think about it.

Happy Birthday 6-2, Happy Birthday 6-2, Happy Birthday 6-2, Happy Birthday to you :-)

I think that was the last August Old Firm Game at Celtic Park!

edward,

I'll have a stab at answering that...

You're average bean counter will talk about Return on Investment (ROI)..if you make widgets and for every £100 you invest in manufacturing them (rent, rates, electricty, raw materials, wages etc.) you make £10 profit - you have a ROI of 10%

If you can borrow money off the bank at 5% interest rate then it makes sense to borrow money as the cost of borrowing (5%) is more than offset by the profit made (10%)

I don't think the ROI model is suitable for football clubs though, as you can't predict your profits as easily as so much is down to chance (winning leagues, getting into europe etc.)

So with my limited knowledge of finance, I'd say you're better to be on the cautious side when deciding the level of debt you want at a football club

You're = Your*

not sure about the servicable debt thing, I have had one loan which was paid off early, and a few credit cards I've kept balanced by the end of every month, I constantly get offers of debt from banks I've never dealt with, I think once a loan is sucessfully cleared off, the banks no longer see you as a risk, you dont need to be in debt, to have a credit rating.
then again who the f knows eh?

Pggtips2 :- Thanks for the reply, I hadn't even thought on the takeover aspect.

01Bhoy:

Is this what you are on about perchance?

Perfect Day

I see the latest etims dig at Gordon Strachan (dressed up as a scouting report) suggests we sign 2 Brazilian players with no caps for Brazil....do they know of a change in immigration laws that I've missed?

UNEW MIKE

Yesterday you said, that Celtic walked away from Kadlec because of agents and crooks that demanded money.

After my short reply you said:

“Zybszek I really do not want to prolong the arguement all night and accept that it may be true that Kladec's agent is now Pavel Zika however when celtic first expressed interest in Kladec in 2006 Kladecs agent at that time was Viktor Kolar
June 29, 2006 | Copyright information Copyright 2006 Evening Times. Provided by ProQuest LLC.
CELTIC'S bid to sign Michal Kadlec has failed, the Sparta Prague defender's agent revealed today. They had increased their initial offer to GBP1.6m for the 21-year- old. But Sparta held out for GBP2m plus. After hearing nothing more from Celtic for 10 days, agent Viktor Kolar has resigned himself to the fact they have walked away from the table. Chief scout Ray Clark was at Parkhead yesterday, and discussions with Gordon Strachan on the options lined up in case No.1 target Kadlec could not be delivered have already taken place.”

Yesterday, I left the forum quite early, and I did not see your reply concerning the reasons of Michal Kadlec transfer fiasco. Nonetheless, I wanted to check, what serves me better, the newspapers, or my memory?
I remember, two years ago, I was searching for the news on Czech sites, and remembered Pavel Zika , the man who gave the information to the Czech media, about progress of Kadlec’s transfer talks. I did not see your newspapers, couldn’t remember Voktor Kolar. That means, that two man appeared separately, in two countries, but in one affair. The fact is that Viktor Kolar and Pavel Zika are from the same agency: Sport Invest International Limited. The Managing Director of SII is Eliot van Til , who lives in London. Pavel Zika is the boss of Prague office, Victor Kolar is his subordinate.

Here is the link to Prague office structure:

http://www.transfermarkt.de/de/berater/11/berater/uebersicht/beraterdetails.html

Here is the link to their office in Prague. If you want to see, the names of the players you must click on left window. Brankari means goalkeepers, obranci means defenders, zaloznici means midfielders, utocnici means strikers.

http://www.sport-invest.cz/page.php?page=501

UNEW MIKE

I did not want to prove, that you were wrong. I wanted to check what was the truth? Both sides did not agree the price for the player. That was the reason. Now, I ask the question to myself, was Kadlec enough good for Bayer and not enough for Celtic, or Celtic decided do not go for the same player again?

well done all.
Long may it continue.

Land values puttting the frightners on some
major institutions - any chance this might squeeze
wee rotten Glasgow ones ?

ED,

Also the interest paid on loans is tax deductible, so if you want to alleviate your tax burden take out a loan. I presume that the loan thats accruing interest has to be business related.

Lubo1977 & Canamalar :- Thanks for the replies though I'm not sure if they clear things up for me or muddle them further lol. This of course is down to my own lack of understanding finance rather than your posts.

canamalar - you don't need to be in debt to have a credit rating, but it is very difficult to get one if you've never been in debt. If you have an overdraft facility on your bank, you're generating credit history, even if you've never used it.

weeminger,
agreed, you have to prove you are reliable, once a debt is sucessfully cleared, you have a good credit history. Thats all the banks care about. I think. am I?

ANNAOAN :- Thanks for replying the tax aspect is another one I hadn't thought on, from the different answers giving different aspects of debt that with hindsight should have been obvious I'm starting to think I've asked the blogs daftest question :-)

E.U Financial Gowk

Edward

Don't worry about, it would seem very few people understand the basic principles of debt (including some very highly paid investment bankers!), hence the financial mess the entire global economy is in!

Ed,
methinks you've been leaving it all to the missus too long.

as I said, one sucessful repaid loan and it doesnt matter if you ever take another loan, your credit rating is good.
Same goes for higher purchase.

canamalar - I mentioned a friend last night. His problem was that he'd always been paid by cash or cheque and so had never needed a current account. He eventually got a job where the only payment method was by bacs and he had a really hard time getting a current account because of his lack of credit history.

Awe_Naw,
I raised this quite a while ago, saying it would not suit Celtic to be debt free for the same reason you identified, I was informed its not the plan.
Also now I think about it, the rears must be getting tax rebates :oD could this be murray's masterplan :oD)

On the subject of the financials, can anyone explain to me how Rangers managed to spend as much as they did this summer.

I thought their spend last season (when Murray admitted he spent more than he was expecting) was his last throw of the dice and i thought they would really struggle to spend anything this year.

When i saw they had spent a good few million before Europe i thought he was banking on the Champions league money.

When they went out, it thought thats another gamble failed. Thats them done for now. They will have to sell Cuellar to balance the books.

Then they went and spent the Cuellar money and i thought to myself, how did he manage that??

In the current climate (credit crunch and all that), and their heavy dependancy on HBOS, i thought their spending would be limited but apparantly not. Is this another final final gamble from the ego that is the Mint and how does he manage it. Should HBOS not be asking questions??

I know that he pretty much had Bank of Scotland under his thumb previously but assumed things would change after the HBOS merger thing.

As you can see, i have been doing alot of thinking with very few answers presenting themselves. Can any intelligent folk out there help me???

Another great tribute to this fine site, Paul. In keeping with the great traditions of our club, of course.

My thanks to the mystery donor for making it all possible, and to the other 19 CQNers who made it such an enjoyable day.

And to the team for giving us such a fine performance to watch!

Ed,

The value of debt depends on what you are using it for. If you are using it for something that will increase in value - property or investment - at a rate higher than you are being charged that is a good debt.

If you are using it for something that will decrease in value - food, cars, a 36 year old Scottish centre half - that is a bad debt.

Lubo1977 - Have you been reading "the gods that failed"?

Therags...

canamalar,

I wouldn´t call it a plan but it is a benefit. Minty will be applying and getting a lotto handout soon for the sake of "Scottish football"

Hail Hail

I'd just like to say again, thank you to the donate'r of the tickets and thank you Paul67 for making it all possible.

On the Legendary CQN Badges front, this has been a joint venture between myself and DBBIA.

It was brought about after my good friend had visited Babbity Bowsters three weekends running and had been unable to identify any fellow CQN'rs. We were discussing the obvious conclusion that we both knew that there others from the site in the pub, but without going around the pub and asking individuals personally if they read or posted on CQN, how would one be able to identify fellow CQN'rs ?

We both thought some sort of badge would be an ideal way of doing this. So I (with Paul's permission) took it upon myself to address this problem by having these badges made.

And this is were I thought I was on to a winner. I didn't see it as a way for the BB clique to identify each other. I thought it an ideal way for any CQN'r to find others from the site and my hope was that these would be bought by people from all over the place to help readers/posters identify each other no matter where they congregated !

So far, we have sold around about 70 badges, raising the sum of over £700, which, if you do the maths, shows you how many people have donated far more than the £5 each badge costs !!

This has been achieved by myself, DBBIA, Oldtim67 and Curly giving it the hard-sell in person and by people applying through the e-mail address

CQNBadge@gmail.com.

We have now set up a charity bank account (which we can't finalise until DBBIA returns from holiday this weekend) which will allow us to have a link on the main page and will also allow us to receive payment by Paypal as well as Postal Orders or cheque.

I have been advised by Paul to take my initial outlay (£500) from the funds as soon as it was possible and as that total has now been surpassed, we are now into clear profit of £200 !

Each badge cost £1 to make and the asking price of £5 means that £4 will go to CQN's charity fund which will be distributed to wherever Paul sees fit.

The badges look like this.

CQN Badges

My personal thanks to all that have bought so far and I look forward to hearing from anybody who would like to in the future.

pablophanque

weeminger,
I seen that, the simplest way is higher purchase, as they are still pretty much begging for us to take some debt. I must admit though they really dont like us paying off early, they prefer people to stick to the agreement, which obviously makes them more money.

Weeminger - all banks must provide a 'basic bank account' for those who do not wish to have a current account. This will allow your friend to have bacs payments and pay direct debits.

The downside is they don't pay interest and usually restrict over the counter services.

Therags...

I feel good about this James Brown rumour

I knew that I would as well

I wasn't aware of Saturday's CQN fundraising but many congratualtions to all involved and indeed, as Old Tim has said. congratualtions to all who have supported the various activites over the "summer".

I'm looking for a wee bit of help here: I will be in the Nice area for about a week from this evening. Anyone recommend any bars for watching the game on Sunday?

soosidecelt

On the credit side for Rangers

UEFA Cup Final/JJB deal and the sales of Cuellar and Hutton accumulates to about £50 million in cash which is always helpful when dealing with banks. Wave cash at them and they become much more friendly no matter whether you've taken out credit or not.

The problem for Rangers are these were all one-offs, particularly the first two. You may always get lucky with a signing or two, so yeah it is possible this is a last throw or second last. I would expect they won't be £10 million net spenders during the next couple of windows.

Way off topic but had to share, I have just read a story about plans to weigh children at a hotel in England and charge them per stone of weight for their meal, the National Obesity forum have raised concerns over this.

The spokesman from the National Obesity Forum is unbelievably called - 'Tam Fry'

Story

Well done to all involved.
A great amount raised for worthy causes!

/Bishop B

tickling stick,
seen that last week, I liked the idea. hell mend them. Though I dont see many going to that hotel.
A pal of mine is obese, he told us it was glandular, what he never told us is that he's got and over active greedy gland :oD

I'm fat, but not fat enough csc

I read with interest that Shunsuke Nakamura doesn't want to play either Milan or Benfica in this season's Champions League.

It's been reported that he said:

"What I can say is that I don't think we want to play Benfica or Milan again. All I want to do is play against some of the best clubs in the tournament."

I wonder does Naka realise that neither Milan nor Benfica had qualified for the Champions League.

Surely the big spend post-carlos by Re-arrangers was only to head off an Edgar led uprising. Come January I'd expect a big saleable asset (if they have any)to be punted asap to claw back some of that money. Also how many first team players do Re-arrangers currently have. Surely if they cant shift some of their donkeys the cummaltive wage burden for them will be emense.

canamalar, therags - it's all been sorted for while, it was just a wee example.

The rags

No, not heard of it - is it a good read?

Mort,

lost in translation ?

More like made up rumour mill pash

"It´s imperative that we avoid a German team" said the Japanese sensation, "Celtic historically dont have a good record against German teams and I have had many pre seasons training camps with Reggina in all the regions of Germany" recalled painfully the Japanese hun skelper extrodanaire. "I would prefer a new challenge and possibly somewhere a little warmer"

Come on David "Hot balls" Taylor get it sorted.

I really cant imagine that the Steven Fletcher rumours are correct. He looks like a player with a lot of potential (he gave us a few scares last season) but the transfer-story just doesnt make sense.

If anyone has any suggestions to the contrary, I'd love to read them!

I assumed at first it was made up tripe because all i could see was that he said we had played against Milan and Benfica before and it would be nice to play against someone else. But then when I saw the quote I assumed he had said it but then again it wouldn't be the first time someone had made up a quote.

So how are you awe_naw? Quite enjoyed your debates with fellow posters over the last couple of days but have been too busy to do much posting.

pablo,

Absolutely Sterling work my man, both badges look great, however I'm not too sure about the whole 5p broach (brooch?) thing you've got going on.... :-)

cta!

willbuyhisbadgesbypaypalcosthatisthecrazysortofguyiam

Paranoia Is Total Awareness

I think its difficult to say what is a "good" or "bad" draw because I'm sure when we were drawn with Shaktar (the first time), most would have said that was a "good" draw for a place in the UEFA as with Barca and Milan we were never going to qualify. The same with Copenhagen, Rosenborg etc and they both scalped us at their places.

I'm just happy to be there without having to worry about a match tonight.

Mort,

I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control and I think I like it. We shouldn't even think about tomorrow. Sweet memories will last a long, long time. We'll have a good time, Mort, don't you worry. And if we're still playing round bhoy well that's just fine. :-)

I hope we draw that Romanian team as I´ve never been there and I really do fancy that as a new experience or a Turkish club. We can compare passions and bhoy are they passionate

Hail Hail

Pablophanque :- I remember you telling me about the badge plan, I'm glad to see it has taken off so well. Kudos to you.

I am with you, Edward.
I am another of the financial simpletons who would sooner see myself, or my club, in the BLACK.
The monetary sophisticates can theorise till the cows come home, but I will always have more faith in the pound in my pocket, or in my account.
Those who talk about the tax benefits of owing money, seem to miss the point that these tax breaks only make it a little less painful to pay the exorbitant bank charges. It doesn't remove them. It is surely better not to owe anything, & therefore not to have to pay ANY charges.
I am obviously missing something, but I will always think that I am in more control of my situation when I have NO debt.

Paul67, pablophanque,
Given the unprecedented free publicity that BB's receive on this
site, would they be so obliging as to keep a stock of CQN badges
behind the counter?
Personally, I could nip over and get one on Saturday evening before heading on a mini pub crawl for the night.

Edward, o1bhoy, indeed.

Edward, debt helps earn you a credit rating, it also demonstrates that you are able to cope with debt and keep the company in order. A company which has been in debt and followed projections is more likely to be loaned money again than one that has never been in debt.

As a rule, I believe debt should be used at periods in the business cycle, or when projects require.

Pablo, my pleasure.

madra rua, you make a good point.

Heading to glasgow staurday and its been a while since i went on a pub crawl...

Suggestions for peoples top ten pubs in glasgow..starting from central station....

Well Done, Paul, & all the big hearted CQN men who are responsible for a fantastic bit of fund raising.
You are a credit to yourselves & to the club.

Kilbowie,

I agree with you entirely...there has been a huge global PR exercise in recent years to persuade people there is nothing with debt, and that it is somehow a good thing.

If you can afford to, then I'd always advise staying in the black. That goes for personal finances or football club finances.

I am coming home 23 Sep-24 Oct and would like to meet some CQN posters. I assume that BB's is Baird's Bar in the Gallowgate. If I am wrong, please correct me.

The CQN Blog makes my day in OZ, usually after all UK bloggers have gone to bed. Thank God, despite Rupert Murdoch, we don't have to put up with the 'Daily Retard' and other trashy Rearanger's excuses for newspapers here in OZ.Also we don't have the 'Master Brick Tradesmen' phone ins that exist back in Scotland.'

However, we do have, 121 pay to view crap 'Foxtel' TV channels, including Setanta. Hence my joy at being able to access CQN daily, or in my case nightly.

So if I come into BB's on a game Saturday, how do I recognise a CQN Blogger? I will be wearing a Melbourne Celtic Supporters Club top ,Badge: the boxing kangaroo wearing the hoops.

I look forward to a reply,

Hail! Hail!

Aussie Tim

* nothing wrong with debt....

Well done all at CQN for again raising a fine sum for charity yet again!

Edward, I thought you meant personal debt? not debt from a business.

01bhoy

Since your a gambling mhan what odds do you give for a Anti-Celtic story appearing before the "Glasgow Derby" game?

jinkybhoy - Goose on Union St / Sloans / Horseshoe / Counting House / Station Bar / Pot Still / Bon Accord / Toby Jug / Blackfriars / Babbity Bowster.

Proper beer in all I think....

Mort

Just looking at the likely competition.
'Good' in inverted commas, because a) haven't played them before and b) look the (relatively)softest opponents in each pot.

Agree it's just great to be there without the nailbiting.

Aussie Tim

"I will be wearing a Melbourne Celtic Supporters Club top ,Badge: the boxing kangaroo wearing the hoops."

Yes, but how will we recognise you?

PS. Just to add my congrats on the fund raising. Well done.

Jinkybhoy,
We'll be heading on a crawl from the Central on Saturday.
Times are not yet available.
Given the age, morality, stamina differentials between our
motley crew we will be arguing over the venues all night.
We'll definitely start in the "Goose" on Union street.
I want to visit the Scotia, that'll cause a row, then BB,s and on up to Merchant city.
One of the guys wants to finish in Diamond Dogs, but he's just sad.
It's up in the air so far.

Lubo1977,

Thank You. I hit the URL you provided but it did not give the location. Where is Babbity Bowsers? I thought Baird's Bar was a reasonable guess!

Hail! Hail!

Aussie Tim

Jackson OG'll do me.
That looks like a good tour.

Aussie Tim -

Normally, the CQN Babbity Bowsters clique are on the left as you enter the bar from Blackfriars Street.

Normally quite a few are wearing Celtic tops or green tees, and all very friendly - just mention "CQN" or look for the badges!

The first home game when you are back is the Aberdeen game, hopefully won't be changed from the Saturday KO to suit Sultana TV. Looking forward to meeting you.

madra

what time you starting at?

been in the goose and tbh thought it wasn't up there in my top 5 of pubs in the world..seemed a bit scummy...

This may seem a bit pedantic, but I wish people would stop referring to Stephen McManus's contact with the ball as being hand ball, IT WAS NOT! The ball went into the net via his upper arm. If his hand was by some freak of nature attached to his arm, he surely would have, by now, been the 'victim' of some dreadful channel five programme. As far as I am aware Stephen has no deformity of of his right arm. I would have more sympathy with people if they stuck to the facts in regard to any percieved injustice, they would have more credibility, and support. The assertion by Higden that Stephen McMnanus scooped the ball into the net with his hands leaves him open to scorn and derision, even though the goal should not have stood. I did not see the game but, from what I can gather, I would have thought Falkirk should have concentrated a lot of their post match utterances on their apparent defences inadequacies, which it would appear could have lead to them losing even more goals than they actually did. Stick to facts.

Bhoys, Ghirls

one thing is sure aboiut the CL draw - given their home record Celtic will be close to the bottom of everyone's list of Pot 3 teams they would like to get!

VertWolf

PITA (hope you don't mind if I shorten your moniker)

Not nitpicking honestly, I agree that it would be nice to play teams that we haven't played before, but I don't think there are any soft teams in the competition but if there are no doubts Man United will get them as they always seem to have a very favourable draw.

Paul67,

Well done on the money raised. Think the badge idea from Pablophanque is a great idea.

Have you heard anything on the annual accounts from across the city? Seems a bit off that they are late as they had last years AGM on the 23 August. Maybe some spin coming out either way after Sunday's game...

naesnakesinOK

If there are many wearing same top I will not only be surprised but also extremely chuffed. However, in case there are many there wearing the 'Boxing Kangaroo' top my description is as follows:

5'5", Tall/Small, Grey haired, wearing glasses, and ages with big Billy Mc Neill.

new article posted.

ragnarhairybreeks,

as always talking sense ...

John Hughes trying to take the heat of his own and his teams very poor performances so far this season.

Should we expect Higdon in the paper tomorrow saying that Brines has now switched allegiances and is a Morton fan ?

Just wondering if the Falkirk game had a '1st' element to it?

Maloney and McGeady are products of the Celtic youth system and both have been Player of The Year. Is this the first time that two such players have played in the same Celtic team?

jinkybhoy,
We'll be in Glasgow around 5pm, I'm not sure what time we'll
head out.
The Goose is only a place for the Irish to gather.
We usually stay in Jurys, Central ect, so it's handy.

Celticlover,i can't be sure but,i would imagine that the Lisbon Lions, must have provided at least two players of the year,i think it was Big Billy, and Bobby Murdoch.
