Devil in the detail behind Murray's £100m boast

| | Comments (103)
In an interview with the BBC yesterday, Sir David Murray suggested he was unable to give certain financial information on Rangers due to rules which inhibit casual comment on a PLC, but this did not deter him from boasting that he put over £100m into the club in the last 20 years.

BBC correspondent, Chick Young asked, "Can you quantify how much you have put into this club over the last 20 years?"

To which Murray replied, "Over a hundred million pounds, and I don't expect to get it back."

I found this surprising way for a PLC to represent information.

Murray put £50m into the club at their recent share issue.  Although this was heralded as being a great injection  into the club at the time, they have not acted like a club who became £50m richer since.  That money reduced Rangers debt by £50m, but the debt remained with Murray International Holdings, Rangers parent company.  Murray's companies also invested up to £32m in a share issue in 2000.

It is also worth pointing this money is not lost, as Murray tried to allude near the end of his interview, he retains these shares and will determine the price he sells them for.

Murray also paid former Rangers shareholders ENIC and Lawrence Marlborough when buying their shares, but the club did not see a penny of this money.

Rangers accounts detail "Related Party Transactions" between Murray's other companies and the football club.  During some seasons he spent up to £395k with Rangers, principally for stadium advertising, although I understand he pays no money for the naming rights to the folly, Murray Park.  Over 20 years, £395k here-and-there mounts up.

Related Party Transactions also record that during some seasons Rangers spent up to £4.298m with Murray's companies, "principally in relation to catering services, call centre, mail order operation, information technology and travel".

£4.298m is a lot of Bluenose Burgers etc. in one season, and don't forget the price of those burgers; the mark-up is incredible.  Over 20 years figures like this really would add up to a tidy sum, maybe not quite £100m, but more than enough money to establish a fabulous lifestyle.

Before the £50m share issue Murray MHL Ltd provided a revolving credit facility to Rangers.  You might well wonder why when two of your companies have bank borrowings, one company would contract a loan arrangement with the other.

This remains a mystery, but Rangers accounts reveal that Murray MHL Ltd charged "commercial rates" for this credit; one year this amounted to £288k in interest, nice work, if you can lend it.  This money was put into the club but then taken out several times, as the cash balance of the club varied, so he almost certainly put in £100m overall, but this credit was all returned to lender, with a negative net balance for the club after interest.

Murray also seems to be confusing the question, "how much you have put into this club" with 'how much other people have put into this club'.

Murray International Holdings (MIH) own 62m Rangers shares while Murray Sports Limited (MSL) own 37m, but Murray himself only owns 67.5% of MIH and 57.1% of MSL.  Accordingly, 62M x 67.5% plus 37m x 57.1% = 62.96m shares, or 58% of Rangers.  The other 42% is owned by a myriad of investors, including small shareholders and HBOS, who own 11% of MIH.

While it is easy for Murray to suggest that he would not be difficult to deal with if the right person arrived with an offer for the club, convincing other shareholders, especially HBOS, who Murray's companies are in debt to, including a substantial amount repayable on demand, will be a tricky proposition.  HBOS might be more inclined to suggest he continues to take the heat and hold out for an offer which matches their book valuation.

I almost fell off my chair when Murray asked Chick Young how to asset strip something you own!  On listening again, though, I am sure "First of all, how can you asset strip what you own?" was a rhetorical question, and Young was not being asked for some highly suspect financial advice.  After all why would a man who outsourced catering to his own company ask a question like this?

However, that comment brought to mind the other money Murray has put into Rangers, he bought the Albion Car Park from the club at the going rate, or at least, at a figure Rangers were happy with.  I wonder if any of this land is subject to the planning application he mentioned in his interview?

For all his good work throughout the years, from breaking the taboos in 1989 to selling all those burgers, I think 'Murray' is no longer an apt name, from now on, I'll know him as Sir David Murphy!

His parting advice to Rangers fans to "leave the finance to me".  What a character the man is.

Murphy must stay!

Joshyboy told me to tell you that naybdy speaks to him like that and he´s gonnae get ye !!

Brilliant ! I cant believe you just done that

nearly there!!!

Paul67 - Can't believe you stole my line about Kaunas for your previous headline and didn't give me a credit !

Bloke109 - Thoughts are with you mate. Good friend of mine, and very good Celtic fan tragically died 2 years ago today in the USA. Always think of him whenever something happens in the Celtic world and am sure he is watching on in the comfy seats up there somewhere.

joshyboy - you obviously haven't received a phone call early one morning from your father in law telling you that his son has committed suicide. Nor have you then had to tell your wife the news about her brother, nor look at his 3 little kids and try to explain to them that their daddy isn't here anymore. No doubt your original comment was made with regard to a group of people for whom many of us have little time for, but take it from me that suicide is not something that you should wish on anyone.

It wisnae me, it was the internet!

Paul,

Whats with the Murphy comment? (May have missed something!)

i have two very funny pictures i would like people to view, how can i do this?

Paul,

Lovely article.

But the sad thing is that all of the figures you quote are available to any competent journalist (maybe an oxymoron when talking about the Scottish sports varieaty) and no one asks the questions!

Chic's fawning interview was like baseball batting practice - oh, Sir David (how I love you), here are some nice easy balls for you to knock out of the park.

sorry

Can anyone enlighten us as to just how they can afford to spend £9m so far in transfer fees and l0ok like spending another £9m before the window shuts?

Another excellent article Paul67 you are one insightful host and a pleasure to post beside..

Cardiffbhoy-No doubt your original comment was made with regard to a group of people for whom many of us have little time for ..apology will suffice

bhoydell- grow up son with the hun jibe I have forgot more about Celtic than you will ever learn...

First post.
The longer Sir Minty stays at the Bigotdome, the better.
Why no news of the £700M superbigotdome?
Why is there no financial investigation into Minty's practices?

Paul67, good to get it off your chest eh! Great stuff.
Have you any news on the Maloney rumour from the previous thread
Whooshman

Paul - I think a potential reason as to why SDM finds it easy to spin the truth is that he is being interviewed by people more accustomed to asking players and managers if they are happy with the result or if the conditions made it tricky out there.

He is a businessman and as such needs to be interviewed by the top economic and business analysts that pour over the details of company reports for the likes of the Times, the Guardian and the Telegraph. He knows the Likes of Chick Young are not capable of asking him searching financial questions. He knows they will not have done enough homework to dig deeper than the bland "so are you a selling club" type question.

I wonder what an FT or Economist journalist would do to him in current circumstances?

Trolls shrivel up and die if you don't feed them. I suggest everyone here adopts this policy with people like joshyboy. He is very easily ignored, it takes about three seconds of practice before it becomes second-nature.

Paul67 - Any truth in the story about Bobo knocking back 30k a week at Birmingham ? Would seem incredible if true.

First time poster - Just one question for Kittochbhoy, How reliable is your source re:Maloney? Paul: Great site.

Oh dear...'Smoke and mirrors', 'Robbing Peter to pay Paul' all spring to mind. This is quite damning, Paul - well done!

From a parochial perspective I'm loving every minute of their steady demise and long may it continue.

However, one must wonder what the human price of Murray's hubris is. How many jobs have been shedded and livelihoods ruined as Murray chops and change to save what little is left of his reputation as master of that quintessentially British club?

This guy is a few steps away from Maxwell. Hell mend him.

Shaun Maloney ...... now there's a positive step forward.

Kittoch

either that or there exists two illiterate malcontents

Given the great success of "Orange Day" a few years ago, perhaps Murray should run a "Brown Day" to celebrate the quality of their current players.

Dannybhoy67

I remember something about this a few years back. It was heralded as a great new dawn, Rangers would compensate the youth setup by buying any youngster who looks like making the grade. Was supposed to make the youth setup self suffieient. Maybe that explains why no youngsters have made the grade since - Rankers can't afford their own????

At least whoever started this rumor version 2.0 picked a team that could hypothetically afford those wages.

Paul67,

You're missing the real story. Murray is not fleecing Rangers through inter-company transactions.
But how much has he taken out of MIH in dividends? Two years ago their total dividends were over £15m, almost 85 per cent of which went to him.
He has also received many millions in "emoluments". Plus payments into money-purchase pension plans.
Tot this up over the last seven years, and it's a huge sum.

Rangers FC are predominantly owned by one of many shelf MIH companies, and also a Murray Sports shelf company.
Rangers FC also report in June, unlike MIH. So cash and debts and revolving credit can be moved around in the intervening period to make balance sheets look more palatable.
The sort of thing that "due diligence" from forensic accountants would uncover.
Perhaps you should ask Mr Soutar to let you see the report he received. The one that persuaded him to drop his interest in Hun PLC very, very quickly.

I noted with interest his scathing attack on web based outlets blogs like this one I suppose. He doesn’t like them does he? Apparently the way to get the truth is to have relationship, phone him up, have a chat ask a question and get a direct answer. This seems to affirm that he wants to control and manipulate the press reporting on all things rangers.

Now given the guff we have to endure from the main press in Scotland, and that most of the TV/Radio and printed press have accompanying web sites which include discussion forums, and we’ve all witnessed the lazy journalists who CTRL “c”, CTRL “v” from all these sites right into their reports; I have to wonder who is kidding who? Like it or not we’re all be accused here. The way things are going, Mr Murray will have to wake up to the 21st century and get used to this new fangled interweb thingy or risk having no media to manipulate.

Given what Paul has extracted and presented above, and the smoke/mirrors approach in the original press release/"interview". I am reminded of the press control under the old soviet regime. Press stories under Pravda were defined as either News or Truth and the adage was that:

Truth is not News and News is not the Truth.

Paul67, I salute you sir! an inspired piece of writing, without doubt your best yet!

out of interest, whats the score with the office block outside Ibrox? (eglinton house?) is there not something similar happened with that to the car park?

Dannybhoy67 - this is an exercise to improve the on-paper accounts. Players that come through the youth system have no value in the accounts ie we cannot say that McGeady is worth £12M in the accounts because we did not pay that for him and we therefore have no concrete knowledge of his value, we can only speculate.

Rangers on the other hand 'buy' their players from Ranger Youth Development, which means that all of the players coming through the youth system have a value in the accounts and it improves the overall picture. A wee plus from their point of view is that they can just make up the fee eg:

Youth Development - "He's very good, let's value him at £2M"
Rangers - "Aye, whatever".
MIH Accountant - "So that's £2M from RFC into RYD. We own RYD, so we'll have that thank you. Oh look, RFC are £2M down, it's handy I've just taken that from RYD, I'm in a good mood I'll give it to RFC".

Kittochbhoy thanks, but at the risk of annoying, is your source still expecting Maloney deal to be completed today? Excuse the name change completed registration profile incorrectly.

kittochbhoy, you seem convinced

i hope you're right, it would be our best signing this summer in my eyes

kittochbhoy the one more goalscorer that we need. Think what Shaun will do to make it all right again in our eyes. He will put everything on the line for the hoops and so he should. We know that he has got it. Our Lubo junior back home where he belongs. I hope this isn't just another rumour.

I´ve been told that the car park will be cordoned off at Ibrox tomorrow and that a marquee tent selling Manchester 08 memorabilia at a knocked down price is being erected as I speak. Admission 8 quid 50 pence

I see Rangers are close to signing Pedro Mendes.

When can we expect to see him paraded at Lennoxtown? :)

Joshy, A couple of months ago I posted a joke about suicide on a non-football forum without thinking. I soon found out that another poster's brother in law recently put a gun to his head and left a wife and 2 wee kids behind. I felt like a complete c**t. So I had the post removed, apologised profusley and learned to think about what I post.

I don't post often enough on here so while I'm on I'll say a few more things.

Pablo, I look every morning at the choons that the night shift put up for our entertainment. Don't think it isn't appreciated mate. I have over 13,000 songs on my iChoons, perhaps we should talk music some time.

Bloke_109, condolences to you and your friend's family. I lost my wife 4 years ago (totally unexpected) and I had to learn to cope with it and bring up 2 daughters. The family will never get over it but it will get easier with time. Believe me, I know.

TheRags :-I like it :-) but it brought to mind WinningGemmell, does anyone know if he has left the site or just away for a while?

When any analysis of Sir David Murray’s commitment to Rangers is made by the bean counters they invariably miss a very important aspect. This is the very considerable, but intangible benefit that SDM has derived from his ownership of Rangers FC’s corporate hospitality.

Some years ago, on several occasions, I attended Ibrox as a guest of one of MIH’s steel stockholding companies. I have to say that the hospitality was first class and no expense was spared. In my case of course as a Celtic fan and an honest businessperson I was not influenced to place any orders with MIH on the basis of anything other than merit. But that was not the case with other guests who were feted before during and after the game at city hotels as a means of securing major steel orders. In the heady days of the offshore construction boom and 9IAR Ibrox was the place where steel deals were struck.

Coming from Fife I am also aware that another boost to MIH’s profits came from opencast coal mining, construction and leisure in the Kingdom. That many of Fife’s councillors were Rangers minded and regular recipients of MIH hospitality does not mean that deals between MIH and Fife Council such as the Kingdom Park opencast and Vida Sports at Pitreavie were made at Ibrox, but there is no doubt that it helped.

I remember two Masonic, blue-nose, Labour councillors from Fife who made no secret of the fact that they were regulars to such an extent at Ibrox that they referred to the management team on first name terms….Walter and Archie!

IMHO this rather dubious spin-off from corporate hospitality brought more millions into MIH than the 100 that SDM claims to have spent from his own pocket.

Having received similar hospitality at Celtic Park I found it to be less professional and the hard sell much softer…not even approaching MIH’s quid pro quo methods.

PBF- If you make a joke about suicide then surely thats how it should be taken in jest its a forum FFS if these guys who have had that unfortunate incident happen to them then they should not come onto a forum where suicide jokes are common place..

Good stuff Paul,

Keep the pressure on, they may gulp down his lies, we wont. Have to say, he sounded like a complete bully in that interview, i'm right and everyone else is wrong mentality, the walls are crumbling around him. Might be those tanks that have rolled in.

Heard a story that Rangers are trying to change their strips this year. think they had them on against kaunas last week though.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7553061.stm

Minty's interview was a shocker.

There is absolutely no strategy for the club, sustainable or otherwise. That was coming through so clearly.

Comments like "we will spend the Cuellar money, hopefully wisely, in the short term"

Spoken like a true leader who has every confidence in the management structure around him.

He appears now to be totally devoid of ideas for next week far less next year.

The movement of money around so many pots can only go on for so long before you have to actually sort it out and he looks like a man who has no idea how to do that.

The laptop loyal have done (polo)minty proud this week

WOW signing? Don't think so, so is there a WOW signing still to be paraded in the Hoops? Any word paul67?

Walter is quoted on BBC as saying that Pedro can get a goal or two. Well, that would certainly add to his 15 goals in 10 professional playing years.

ed i dont debate with huns in fact I would prefer it if you escaped over to follow follow where your kith and kin belong...

Very Good article Paul, couple of questions;

He bought RFC for £6M. was this cash or borrowed and did BOS finance this debt and was this a personal debt from Sir Minty or debt provided by BOS to MIM?

Some time ago he sold ENIC 15% at £40M and bought back at between £8M - £12M. This was a straight share sale which went into either MIH or his own pocket, surely this counts as income TAKEN from RFC?
He sold NTL a % as broadcasting rights at £40M and bought back some time later - what was the price and where did this income go?

I was told it is reckoned that with his supplier companies to RFC as well as his ownership of Murray park and leasing this to RFC he has TROUSERED over £40 MILLION FROM RFC during his term of office and he has NEVER "put his own money into RFC as this has always been debt acrued by RFC" - Are there any correct figures on how much the rascal has actually made from the tangerine hoardes and do you have any analysis by any financial experts on how the debt was relocated to MIH and the fact that RFC has provided ready cash for his pockets for many years so far??

cheers Lads! thats exactly what I needed!

Now to throw that one out there tonight, sit back and watch them all kick off in front of me!

Well I might not be as wealthy as you, maybees I am, maybees I’m not, who knows and who cares but I think when it comes to a wee wager you might just be as big as mug as me.

So to get to the point let’s put a few quid where our mouths are; I’m going to be home for a game in the next few weeks, work and domestics all being sweet, now when I come home, what say you and I, with as many BB’s Cliquee’s who care to witness, meet up before whichever Celtic home game I can make and we have ourselves a wee wager.

Maybe correct score.
Maybe first scorer.
Maybe time of first goal.

Or any permutation of any bet on a single game you care to mention.

We can have ourselves a trifecta or if you chose. 50 GRAND on each single bet and a further 50 GRAND on top on who calls the most correct.

That is a grand total of 200k as you like to put it. If you are up for it I will have my bank certify cheques to whatever sum you care to mention up to a value of 500k and I will have them with me in person when I get there.

What say you big man??? You up for a wee wager???

You and me with a 500k limit. (certified bankers cheques only)

kitalba and others,

Interesting article. Where there's money there's muck or is it vice versa? The questions raised by the points made should be being aske by te Ranger support.

Can you clarify what you meant when you wrote

"I almost fell off my chair when Murray asked Chick Young how to asset strip something you own! On listening again, though, I am sure "First of all, how can you asset strip what you own?" was a rhetorical question, and Young was not being asked for some highly suspect financial advice. After all why would a man who outsourced catering to his own company ask a question like this?"

Was it Young being asked or Murray? Or Young asking Murray? What were you implying in the last sentence? Just seeking clarification.

I posted yesterday on how the cost of buying out Murray would put off any investor unless the cost was peanuts. An unknown factor was the amount of regular profit generated by Rangers. If Celtic can only generate £4 million on their turnover there is no chance of any investor in Rangers getting a return in his lifetime if the buy out cost is £75m.

I'd also heard that Sir Minty, having been rebuffed by The Honest men then, via the honest and upstanding Graeme "its not a toupee, its a hair weave and I dont dye it" Souness, beat a path to Lawrence Marlboroughs rep, David Holmes and agreed a cash deal of £6M for a company valued at £21M. (Mmmmmmmm, suitcases and off-shore accounts anyone??)However one condition of Lawrence selling his familys silver was that major investment had to be made to continue on the path of them bringing in players such as Butcher, Woods etc. (Marlborough obviously thinking Sir Minty would invest his own money) However Sir Minty then proceeded to borrow against RFC and load RFC with debt and no cash injection was forthcoming.

Will we ever know if Sir Mintys House of cards has actually ever existed or has that proof been washed away in a sea of tangerine, fine red wines and private jets as far as the sports journos have been concerned and a sea of indifference as far as the Scottish financial journalists are concerned??

Now that everyone's signed up to Michele Cocozza's CQN Fantasy Footie League, you're all welcome to join another Fantasy League. on the same site.

Full details are here; Selectabet and you can use this code to join the private league: 258353-58410

Unlike Duffield & his SFA cronies we've managed to get a sponsor for our competition; Paddy Power have provided £200 of free bets and there's prizes for finishing 'Rangers', sorry 2nd (and 3rd).

Good Luck!
